- 0:00Speaker 1: Section twenty three of the Heart of the New Thought
- 0:04Speaker 1: by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. This liprivox recording is in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: public domain self conquest. Every new idea or supposed new idea,
- 0:19Speaker 1: is a light which attracts the moths. The new thought
- 0:24Speaker 1: is no exception about it. Flutter hysterical women, unbalanced men,
- 0:30Speaker 1: the erratic, and the irresponsible. The possibilities of performing miracles,
- 0:36Speaker 1: of healing the sick, hypnotizing the well, transforming poverty into wealth,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and changing age to youth are the rays of light
- 0:46Speaker 1: which flicker through the darkness and drew them into the
- 0:49Speaker 1: circle of radiance. The self indulgent fat woman subscribes to
- 0:55Speaker 1: new thought literature, pays for a course of lectures, and
- 1:00Speaker 1: goes forth into the ranks of the unbelievers, proclaiming her
- 1:04Speaker 1: power to become a self and to cause others to
- 1:08Speaker 1: become selfs. The extravagant and inconsiderate rush forth, after having
- 1:14Speaker 1: heard a discourse upon the power of mind over matter,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and declare that they possess the secret of accumulating a
- 1:23Speaker 1: fortune by occult means. The lovers of the marvelous believe
- 1:29Speaker 1: that they will become great healers in a brief space
- 1:32Speaker 1: of time. Not one of these moth converters realizes that
- 1:37Speaker 1: the very first step to take in the direction of
- 1:40Speaker 1: new thought is self conquest. The gormond does not know
- 1:46Speaker 1: that self indulgence and gross appetite are incompatible with mental
- 1:52Speaker 1: or spiritual growth, and will be insurmountable obstacles in her
- 1:57Speaker 1: path toward symmetry. This pen's thrift does not take into
- 2:02Speaker 1: consideration the fact that good sense, thrift and industry must
- 2:08Speaker 1: aid his mental assertion of wealth, and the miracle lover
- 2:12Speaker 1: does not understand that something greater and more difficult is
- 2:17Speaker 1: required than a mere wish to heal before healing powers
- 2:21Speaker 1: can be obtained. That the physical body and material conditions
- 2:28Speaker 1: can be dominated by the divine spirit in man is
- 2:32Speaker 1: an incontrovertible fact. But first, last, and always, the lesser
- 2:40Speaker 1: self must be subjugated and the weak and unworthy qualities overcome.
- 2:47Speaker 1: The woman who desires to reduce her flesh cannot do
- 2:52Speaker 1: so by reading occult literature or joining mystic circles or
- 2:57Speaker 1: attending lectures. She permeates herself so thoroughly with the spiritual
- 3:04Speaker 1: truth that she no longer craves six courses At dinner
- 3:09Speaker 1: and three meals a day, and unless she overcomes her
- 3:13Speaker 1: dislike for exercise. The man who wishes to control circumstances
- 3:19Speaker 1: must love better things than money. Before he can succeed.
- 3:24Speaker 1: He must love and respect and believe in his creator
- 3:29Speaker 1: and trust the divine man within himself. And he must
- 3:33Speaker 1: illustrate this love and trust by his daily conduct, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: in his home circle, and in his business relations. Once
- 3:44Speaker 1: in a century, perhaps is a man born with great
- 3:48Speaker 1: powers already developed to heal the sick, or to do
- 3:53Speaker 1: other seeming miracles. Such beings are old souls who have
- 3:58Speaker 1: obtained the blomacy in former lives. But the majority of
- 4:02Speaker 1: us are still in school, and we cannot become seniors
- 4:07Speaker 1: until we pass through the lower grades. We must change
- 4:12Speaker 1: ourselves before we can change material conditions. We must heal
- 4:17Speaker 1: our own thoughts and make them sane and normal, before
- 4:21Speaker 1: we can heal bodily disease in others. It is not
- 4:26Speaker 1: an immediate process. I have heard an old lady declare
- 4:32Speaker 1: that she got religion in the twinkling of an eye,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and she believed all people would be damned and burnt
- 4:40Speaker 1: in hell fire. Who did not pass through this sudden illumination.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It is possible that the religion which can worship a
- 4:49Speaker 1: God cruel enough to burn his children in fire, can
- 4:53Speaker 1: only be obtained in the twinkling of an eye. But
- 4:56Speaker 1: the reverend wholesome and beautiful religion of New Thought must
- 5:01Speaker 1: be grown into, little by little, through patience, faith, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: practice all that it claims to do. It can do,
- 5:12Speaker 1: but not instantaneously, not rapidly. We must first make ourselves over,
- 5:20Speaker 1: after absolute control of our minds has been obtained. Then
- 5:25Speaker 1: and only then may we hope to influence circumstances and health.
- 5:33Speaker 1: End of Section twenty three.
