- 0:00Speaker 1: Michael Bush is a really good offensive player and turn
- 0:03Speaker 1: himself into a really good defender at first base. You're
- 0:07Speaker 1: still looking for another level. Welcome into Northside Territory Foul
- 0:13Speaker 1: Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm Saada Sharma with Patrick Mooney,
- 0:17Speaker 1: where your Cubs beat writers for the Athletic and we
- 0:20Speaker 1: are talking all Cubs today. We're going to talk a
- 0:22Speaker 1: little bit about the draft, a little bit about the
- 0:25Speaker 1: state of the Cubs farm system and and who can
- 0:28Speaker 1: impact the team now, who can be traded for impact
- 0:31Speaker 1: players now? And and you know, just the better, better
- 0:35Speaker 1: overall vibes of the system, but the need for for
- 0:38Speaker 1: that to produce results on the major league team and
- 0:42Speaker 1: the field, to show fans like you know, this is
- 0:46Speaker 1: more than just a hyped system. There's there's some results here. Uh, Patrick,
- 0:52Speaker 1: how have you been enjoying this madness with You've taken
- 0:56Speaker 1: much of the bulk of the of the draft information,
- 0:59Speaker 1: which I appreciate, But how you what have you gathered
- 1:03Speaker 1: from that?
- 1:04Speaker 2: I mean to I've I have not slept since Sunday.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I've been grinding on tape non stop. I've been you know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: checking exit vlos. I had to google ev ninety just
- 1:16Speaker 2: to make sure.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I knew what that was.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You know, Cubs have twenty future Hall of famers they're
- 1:23Speaker 2: about to sign, so you know, it was.
- 1:27Speaker 3: No, I I can'd.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I think it's good to talk about the drafts on
- 1:31Speaker 2: that been on my mind of like I think you
- 1:34Speaker 2: feel the same way of like I loved covering it
- 1:36Speaker 2: in June. It was such a good like change of
- 1:40Speaker 2: pace because you know, whatever, it's middle of June. You've
- 1:43Speaker 2: got you know, you've given up time for the major
- 1:47Speaker 2: league season. You can use a change of pace. But
- 1:49Speaker 2: having it here during this week is just a classic
- 1:53Speaker 2: major League baseball unforced error that literally no one likes
- 2:00Speaker 2: this setup and like inside Baseball for our listeners, but
- 2:05Speaker 2: it shows you just how tone depf major League Baseball
- 2:08Speaker 2: can be. Like it's not good for players who have
- 2:11Speaker 2: this kind of like you know, dead time between the
- 2:15Speaker 2: end of their season and there's not much runway left
- 2:18Speaker 2: once you do sign gms want to focus on their
- 2:23Speaker 2: major league team and get into the trade deadline. And
- 2:26Speaker 2: you know, in terms of marketing or in terms of
- 2:29Speaker 2: like media priorities, it's like you've got all star selections
- 2:35Speaker 2: that you got to write about. You've got kind of
- 2:37Speaker 2: the All Star break, mid season analysis, You've got the
- 2:42Speaker 2: trade deadline, so to like, I don't know, go wild on,
- 2:46Speaker 2: you know some of these kids we've never heard of,
- 2:48Speaker 2: Like it is silly, but I did learn a lot
- 2:52Speaker 2: from chatting with and listening to Dan Kantrovitz, the Cubs
- 2:56Speaker 2: vice president scouting, and can share the extent that I
- 3:01Speaker 2: know anything about this, be happy to chat it up here.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I'll just reiterate what you said there, like
- 3:09Speaker 1: why have the draft now? Like it is the most
- 3:12Speaker 1: frustrating thing for people in the game and for media
- 3:16Speaker 1: as well, Like we don't want to cover this right now.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's like what there are probably five teams that aren't
- 3:21Speaker 1: fully engaged as far as their writers wanting to write
- 3:25Speaker 1: about the season right now, especially with the way the
- 3:27Speaker 1: baseball is set up, like so many teams are still
- 3:29Speaker 1: in it. You want to kind of look at the
- 3:31Speaker 1: first half, the unofficial first half, and what the teams need,
- 3:36Speaker 1: Like the trade deadline's coming up. It's just really bad,
- 3:38Speaker 1: Like there's no attention paid to it. Like I love
- 3:42Speaker 1: the draft. I think it's fun and interesting. I'm always
- 3:45Speaker 1: into prospects and trying to understand who's next. I just
- 3:49Speaker 1: could didn't have the time to get into it this year.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Like I texted some context and said, hey, I'll be
- 3:53Speaker 1: in touch, but I don't have time to do the
- 3:55Speaker 1: preview stuff because there's too much crap going on.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Especially when they're picking like fourteenth two.
- 4:02Speaker 1: We'd be all over it right right kind of like
- 4:05Speaker 1: you know, yeah, it's and it's like there's an obvious time.
- 4:11Speaker 1: What the point you made about like them being down,
- 4:14Speaker 1: Like that's that's unhealthy for them. Now now they their
- 4:17Speaker 1: season has ended, they've ramped down, and now they get
- 4:20Speaker 1: like what like half the picks probably of each team,
- 4:23Speaker 1: like you probably like ten get like go to like
- 4:26Speaker 1: instructs or what have go to Arizona or Florida wherever
- 4:29Speaker 1: their their team's uh spring training complexes and and work
- 4:32Speaker 1: out and whatever, do that stuff, but like half of
- 4:35Speaker 1: them probably play and they have to ramp back up.
- 4:38Speaker 1: The Arizona Complex League is I think about to wrap up,
- 4:40Speaker 1: isn't it? Or is that the I'm not.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Sure one of those. I'm not sure.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So some of these leagues are kind of ramping down,
- 4:48Speaker 1: like where it's it's weird. I don't know, maybe not
- 4:51Speaker 1: Arizona Complex League it's it's probably DSL and stuff like that.
- 4:54Speaker 1: That's uh, that's wrapping up. But still it's like it's
- 4:59Speaker 1: just terrible. It's it's going to end up. By the
- 5:00Speaker 1: time they sign, it's like a month of games for
- 5:03Speaker 1: them to play, but when do they ramp up, so
- 5:06Speaker 1: it'll be two weeks of games for them to play.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It's just poorly set up. So like let's get into
- 5:12Speaker 1: the pick that the number one pick primarily camp Smith. Listen,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I like I like the I listened to some of
- 5:20Speaker 1: his inviws. Uh, seems like he's a talkative kid. Seems
- 5:24Speaker 1: like he's he's got a nice little backstory with the Cubs.
- 5:27Speaker 1: You know that that's going to attract fans. It's a
- 5:29Speaker 1: perfect little tidbit for Marquis to put up and make
- 5:32Speaker 1: a commercial out of, right, Like, like I think it
- 5:37Speaker 1: was like set up for that almost it was so
- 5:39Speaker 1: perfect like for Marquis to make it. If he ever
- 5:42Speaker 1: makes his debut, you know that's being brought back. Uh, yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 1: sounds like it sounds like a nice player, like a
- 5:50Speaker 1: very similar profile to what Canterbitz has proven. He kind
- 5:53Speaker 1: of likes these college guys with great cape cod seasons
- 5:58Speaker 1: improve over their course, Like look at Josh Rivera, that's
- 6:01Speaker 1: one guy that they drafted last year. Terrible. I want
- 6:04Speaker 1: to say, like freshman or sophomore year, really like improved
- 6:07Speaker 1: over the course of his college career. Camp Smith only
- 6:10Speaker 1: two seasons. I think he was an older freshman. Really
- 6:14Speaker 1: improved from freshman year Cape Cod League sophomore year. And
- 6:20Speaker 1: you like to see stuff like that actual player development,
- 6:23Speaker 1: And from my understanding, what you gathered was counterbits and
- 6:28Speaker 1: the player development group have have some ideas or some
- 6:32Speaker 1: that they see something that they may be able to
- 6:34Speaker 1: do to get more out of him.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the funny part about some of this stuff.
- 6:40Speaker 2: It's like, we absolutely love the player and we have
- 6:42Speaker 2: like ten things we want to change as soon as
- 6:44Speaker 2: he puts on the Obviously, that's you know ingest an oversimplification.
- 6:51Speaker 2: That definitely a very Cubs pick in the first round.
- 6:57Speaker 2: You can go back to the THEO era as well,
- 7:00Speaker 2: with Jason McLeod and Matt Dorry running things like love
- 7:04Speaker 2: they loved the college.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Hitters, and.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Smith said, you know, after the season, I had no zooms,
- 7:13Speaker 2: no meetings.
- 7:14Speaker 3: No phone calls with the Cubs. And then he said
- 7:18Speaker 3: something like, obviously.
- 7:19Speaker 2: They knew what they were doing, and like, I like that,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and you know, I'd ask Cantribitz about that, and you
- 7:26Speaker 2: know what he said was, we got to know this
- 7:29Speaker 2: guy our area scout believe it's Ralph Rais when he
- 7:33Speaker 2: was coming out of high school and wasn't sure how
- 7:35Speaker 2: hard to go in the draft because he had Florida
- 7:39Speaker 2: State in his back pocket. And really what the draft
- 7:43Speaker 2: has become, it's really financial negotiations. You know, Like clearly
- 7:49Speaker 2: I think camp Smith would have been, you know, one
- 7:52Speaker 2: of the best like thousand players draft eligible, say two
- 7:56Speaker 2: years ago, but you know, you have to kind of
- 7:59Speaker 2: make it worth his while. And I thought it was
- 8:02Speaker 2: interesting that Cam said, you know, going to school was
- 8:05Speaker 2: the best decision I ever made. And so the Cubs
- 8:09Speaker 2: got to know him a little bit while he was
- 8:12Speaker 2: in high school. They saw him play shortstop, which gives
- 8:15Speaker 2: them confidence that he can stick at third base. I
- 8:18Speaker 2: mean Kenstrivit said, quote zero concerns about staying at the
- 8:23Speaker 2: hot corner, and so you know, it's definitely very on
- 8:28Speaker 2: brand for this franchise.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And yeah, I mean.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Smith was kind of asked about the Cubs like here
- 8:34Speaker 2: and there, and I just wanted to clarify because you
- 8:37Speaker 2: never know, right, like someone be like you, I think
- 8:40Speaker 2: Kate Horton was going to go would have played with
- 8:43Speaker 2: Ed Howard like like I think they had been on
- 8:46Speaker 2: kind of the same recruiting circuit to Oklahoma and with
- 8:49Speaker 2: agencies and like you know, the travel ball culture. I
- 8:52Speaker 2: was just kind of curious, you know, if Cam had
- 8:54Speaker 2: any connections to the Cubs existing or the city of Chicago,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and that was kind of where he had said, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 2: his grandparents.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Or from Indiana or at least lived in Indiana when
- 9:07Speaker 3: he was a young boy.
- 9:09Speaker 2: He didn't remember like exactly how old he was or whatever,
- 9:13Speaker 2: but he got he.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Took the tour of Wrigley Field, and like you said, Zada,
- 9:17Speaker 3: that was the perfect marquee commercial right there.
- 9:22Speaker 2: But definitely someone who has a little bit of charisma,
- 9:25Speaker 2: like on the zoom you know, he you know, say
- 9:28Speaker 2: each person's name of you know, how you doing Andy,
- 9:33Speaker 2: or you know what's up Patrick, like just you know
- 9:36Speaker 2: very which is obviously like a super small thing that
- 9:40Speaker 2: makes like reporters go, oh my god, he's so personal.
- 9:43Speaker 2: He's so charismatic, like read someone's name off the zoom screen.
- 9:48Speaker 2: But yeah, real physical player has some some personality, long
- 9:56Speaker 2: track record of performance against high levels of competition, and
- 10:00Speaker 2: and that is a point Kendip. It's made as well
- 10:02Speaker 2: of like when you're a programmed like Florida State and
- 10:07Speaker 2: you're going to the College World Series, the access is
- 10:11Speaker 2: just more limited to the player than if he was
- 10:15Speaker 2: still in high school.
- 10:16Speaker 3: So they felt very comfortable to the point where he.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Was not a guy they felt they needed to get
- 10:21Speaker 2: to know at the draft combine.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I do like the idea of being high level competition.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean he would have played Wake Forest a few
- 10:29Speaker 1: times right in the ACC. That's obviously one of the
- 10:33Speaker 1: elite teams going right now. Yeah, from what I've read
- 10:39Speaker 1: and what I've gathered from some of my contacts is,
- 10:42Speaker 1: you know, like the end zone swinging miss is low,
- 10:45Speaker 1: it doesn't chase too much. He's you know, we'll see
- 10:49Speaker 1: if he sticks at third. It sounds like the Cubs
- 10:51Speaker 1: are optimistic. But as far as offensive profile, it's like
- 10:55Speaker 1: this is becoming like all the like It's what the
- 10:59Speaker 1: spreads sheet spits out right, Like I have model, the models,
- 11:03Speaker 1: the model likes guys like this, And I'm not saying
- 11:06Speaker 1: that the scouts don't. I'm not suggesting that the Cubs
- 11:10Speaker 1: don't value their scouts. It's like this is a model driven, uh,
- 11:14Speaker 1: model heavy amateur scouting department, and and the scouts are valued.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But that's like, look at the draft picks. There's a
- 11:23Speaker 1: lot of model guys that they like, and I that's frankly,
- 11:27Speaker 1: the results in the minors so far suggest that they're
- 11:30Speaker 1: they're doing good work. They're they're they're getting some guys
- 11:34Speaker 1: that are popping up in later rounds. They're getting guys
- 11:37Speaker 1: that you know, are making a name for themselves in
- 11:41Speaker 1: the miners. I guess, you know, I don't want to
- 11:43Speaker 1: dive too deep into the rest of the draft. Patrick,
- 11:46Speaker 1: We we can. We can maybe save that for another
- 11:50Speaker 1: time when both of us have gathered more info, or
- 11:52Speaker 1: we can.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Talk about it six years from now when we right.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But yeah, exactly, but I think so this is so,
- 11:59Speaker 1: this is the this is the point of of what
- 12:02Speaker 1: the draft is, right, Like, you want more than first rounders.
- 12:08Speaker 1: There's there's a reason why Dan Canterwittz was brought in.
- 12:11Speaker 1: There's a reason why changes were made. The Cubs had
- 12:15Speaker 1: a lot of success with first rounders and outside of
- 12:20Speaker 1: the draft, you highlighted recently. The twenty fourteen draft just
- 12:25Speaker 1: not allowed of success outside of the first round, right,
- 12:28Speaker 1: Like we there's like David Bodie is the name from
- 12:32Speaker 1: from the previous group outside of the first round, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: obviously Justin Steel's a stud, Dylan Cees turned into a stud,
- 12:40Speaker 1: and and that's There's not much else. I think there's
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know, we're starting to see some guys pop up
- 12:47Speaker 1: as far as relievers go, like Hunter Biggie. I can't
- 12:53Speaker 1: remember when Porter Hodge was gone.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Porter Hodge. O. This is Jeremiah Strata.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I mean, awesome for the Brewers. DJ Hurris has had
- 13:06Speaker 2: some kind of lights out starts for the Nationals.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I think it's just some of this stuff takes time.
- 13:13Speaker 2: It's weird too that I think all of those names
- 13:17Speaker 2: we just mentioned came out of high school. Yeah, college,
- 13:21Speaker 2: I think that might have a little more certainty with
- 13:26Speaker 2: college arms and Cubs had couple here or there, But
- 13:30Speaker 2: for the most part, it's been those high school guys that.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Took a while.
- 13:35Speaker 2: And I think you can really speak to this that
- 13:38Speaker 2: I was going over my old notes and it was
- 13:41Speaker 2: a Cubs executive talking about Dylan Cees how that he
- 13:44Speaker 2: was drafted and they knew he was gonna have to
- 13:47Speaker 2: undergo Tommy John surgery, and so the Cubs kind of
- 13:50Speaker 2: presented this plan of how it would go and you know,
- 13:54Speaker 2: the care he would get, the supervision, he would get,
- 13:56Speaker 2: the resources he'd be provided, and see was like I
- 14:01Speaker 2: guess continues to be like very just curious about pitching
- 14:05Speaker 2: and these a little.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Offbeat.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Maybe you would say, I'm just thinking about that, like
- 14:10Speaker 2: poem he did, I don't know, slider poems and things
- 14:15Speaker 2: like that, but like someone who was just like really
- 14:18Speaker 2: interested in some of these like technologies and resources and
- 14:22Speaker 2: ideas that the Cups were just kind.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Of bringing online. And there was certainly some trial and error.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Craig Breslo came in later.
- 14:31Speaker 2: And expanded it and defined it in different ways. But
- 14:35Speaker 2: like that kind of long tail of development, I think
- 14:38Speaker 2: you're seeing it with someone like Porter Hodge and side
- 14:41Speaker 2: of you had mentioned his name, you know, weeks ago
- 14:44Speaker 2: before he came up, of like when the bullpen was imploding,
- 14:47Speaker 2: like who can help? And I do think that's gonna
- 14:50Speaker 2: be one of the bigger second half storylines here of
- 14:55Speaker 2: like you know, who can help?
- 14:57Speaker 3: Who can they like get better and that's almost the
- 15:01Speaker 3: trade deadline will be a part of that too. But
- 15:04Speaker 3: just like can they.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Get those young guys to another level here and like
- 15:11Speaker 2: late July, August, September and you know win what's going
- 15:16Speaker 2: to be a lot more you know, one run kind
- 15:18Speaker 2: of narrow type games.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you have to you do have to
- 15:23Speaker 1: give a little credit here to how they've what they've
- 15:26Speaker 1: done with pitching development. Right, We've talked about it plenty,
- 15:29Speaker 1: but like that, we're seeing some fruits of the labor
- 15:33Speaker 1: and and like is there more? Is there more? Like
- 15:36Speaker 1: when that the the player development when it comes to
- 15:39Speaker 1: position players would like to see the results at the
- 15:42Speaker 1: major league level, we're seeing like like you go look
- 15:45Speaker 1: at some of these numbers, It's like, huh, maybe this
- 15:47Speaker 1: guy can help. Well, when are they going to help?
- 15:50Speaker 1: I guess is the question? I think, you know, we
- 15:54Speaker 1: have to look at someone like Matt Shaw and say,
- 15:58Speaker 1: is this guy going to impact the team this year?
- 16:00Speaker 1: With what two months ago? We were talking about that, right, Patrick,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you and I had little tidbits in our pieces bringing
- 16:08Speaker 1: that up. I'm not sure if that's still the case,
- 16:10Speaker 1: Like where it's going to really dictate, like is he
- 16:15Speaker 1: is he on the verge of coming to tripa A.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It sounds like he probably is, Like we could probably
- 16:19Speaker 1: hear a move there in the next couple of weeks,
- 16:21Speaker 1: if not soon after the break. That, yes, that puts
- 16:26Speaker 1: him on the verge, right, just like Mois's biosterus, who's
- 16:29Speaker 1: probably on the verge. And then it becomes where's the
- 16:32Speaker 1: need and what's the like what's the focus of the team? Right?
- 16:36Speaker 1: Is it? Is it twenty twenty four? Is it twenty
- 16:38Speaker 1: twenty five? Yeah? Good point, and what kind of moves
- 16:41Speaker 1: are they making in the next two weeks here? But
- 16:44Speaker 1: this system is it's at an interesting point in that
- 16:49Speaker 1: and we keep writing this where's the impact talent? Now?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Sometimes impact talent surprises us, right, Like Matt Shaw could
- 16:57Speaker 1: come up and like like these number, like we hear
- 17:00Speaker 1: that he's hitting the ball and the impacting the ball
- 17:03Speaker 1: in the same way and double A is weird right now,
- 17:05Speaker 1: and his numbers should be even better. I think his
- 17:07Speaker 1: numbers are good for where the league that he's in,
- 17:11Speaker 1: Like if he's if he is what he looks like
- 17:14Speaker 1: he is, what position is he? I don't know if
- 17:16Speaker 1: that's an impact player? Is that an MVP or a
- 17:20Speaker 1: really good player, Like they have a few of those, right,
- 17:22Speaker 1: Like as frustrating as says Azuki or Ian Hapkin be
- 17:26Speaker 1: go look at their numbers in general. They're really good players, right,
- 17:31Speaker 1: They're not superstars. Michael Bush is a really good offensive
- 17:34Speaker 1: player and turn himself into a really good defender for
- 17:38Speaker 1: a space You're still looking for another level. It's really
- 17:42Speaker 1: hard to develop, really hard to find. I'm not sure
- 17:45Speaker 1: if they have that. Moys's bit by asteris looks really impressive.
- 17:50Speaker 1: The fact that he's doing that at twenty, I do
- 17:53Speaker 1: wonder can he help this team this year? Like you
- 17:55Speaker 1: would have posed that to me even a month ago,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I would have said slow down, But he just keeps
- 18:01Speaker 1: hitting and you know, like what what what does that
- 18:05Speaker 1: look like? What how does that impact the team? Has
- 18:08Speaker 1: he almost like leaped someone like Owen Casey. As far
- 18:11Speaker 1: as the pecking order of who they who they may
- 18:14Speaker 1: call upon, I think it all depends on what like
- 18:16Speaker 1: these like what are they looking to do with these guys?
- 18:20Speaker 1: What do they see best for their player development? And
- 18:23Speaker 1: what is what situation is the team in Like if
- 18:26Speaker 1: the team is competing, does that inhibit them from calling
- 18:29Speaker 1: them up? Or if the team is selling. Is it like, no,
- 18:32Speaker 1: we don't want to bring them up in this situation,
- 18:34Speaker 1: or or maybe they do, maybe they want to no
- 18:36Speaker 1: pressure situation. Like it's just like those those factors I
- 18:40Speaker 1: think really matter here. And of course what we'll get
- 18:44Speaker 1: into tradable guys too. But maybe I'm curious what you've heard,
- 18:49Speaker 1: Uh you've been on the road a little bit and
- 18:52Speaker 1: talk to some people as far as the chance for
- 18:56Speaker 1: someone like Moises by a steros.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Or yeah, I wouldn't say it's like imminent or probable,
- 19:02Speaker 2: but it's not a crazy thought.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I mean it's something that internally they have to consider.
- 19:08Speaker 2: When he's at Triple A Iowa, he plays catcher to
- 19:15Speaker 2: what extent or at what level? I'm not quite sure.
- 19:19Speaker 2: We've seen how hard it's.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Been for Miguel Amaya as an older guy to adjust
- 19:25Speaker 3: who for all the injuries that I had, like he
- 19:29Speaker 3: did have more experience than at a higher level.
- 19:33Speaker 2: So you know, I'm surprised that, Or I should say,
- 19:40Speaker 2: if the cups like didn't call a Casey or Shaw
- 19:45Speaker 2: or any of those guys when their offense is just
- 19:47Speaker 2: an absolute tail spin, and when counsel is saying things
- 19:50Speaker 2: like you know, the the answer is rarely the next player,
- 19:54Speaker 2: like the answers aren't here. I think that is, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 2: a pretty strong belief. We were talking about this the
- 20:02Speaker 2: other day. You mentioned how well Miles master Bony has
- 20:06Speaker 2: played at third base, Like it almost makes you feel
- 20:08Speaker 2: like he has to be part of that equation there,
- 20:11Speaker 2: particularly as you wrote against while playing behind ground ball
- 20:16Speaker 2: pitchers like Hendrix and Steel, like someone who can convert
- 20:21Speaker 2: those double plays or get to those balls, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 2: before they go into the outfield. Like all that stuff
- 20:29Speaker 2: adds up in a really meaningful way. So you know,
- 20:33Speaker 2: I think the Cubs went into the season like maybe
- 20:38Speaker 2: sew our case he does kind of force our hand,
- 20:41Speaker 2: and I don't That's not the vibe I'm getting.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But Mois's I think is a guy who when.
- 20:48Speaker 2: You look at you know, twenty years old hitting at
- 20:52Speaker 2: that level, I mean that's I mean we were told,
- 20:57Speaker 2: you know, at this time last year, this guy's got
- 20:59Speaker 2: a sweet left handed swing, and I think he was
- 21:02Speaker 2: an a.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Ball at that point.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Those people were right on, and so that is obviously
- 21:09Speaker 2: a position of need. And I think you're right to
- 21:14Speaker 2: point out, like we have no idea what the landscape
- 21:16Speaker 2: will be like in August and September, Like, is this
- 21:18Speaker 2: team going to be in it going forward and need
- 21:21Speaker 2: specific things that specific moments or is it going to
- 21:25Speaker 2: be kind of playing out the string? And I don't
- 21:28Speaker 2: know the answer to this either, but like what is
- 21:31Speaker 2: what did Pete Crow Armstrong's.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Debut kind of tell the Cubs? I mean, that did
- 21:36Speaker 3: not go very well.
- 21:37Speaker 2: You're supposed to on the bases and play great defense,
- 21:42Speaker 2: and there were a lot of over anxious, over eager
- 21:45Speaker 2: moments there that just did not really match up. Now,
- 21:48Speaker 2: to Pete's credit, he came back a better player and
- 21:52Speaker 2: I think he learned from that, and his counsel has
- 21:55Speaker 2: done a good job of telling him just focus on X.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Y and Z and don't worry about the offense.
- 22:01Speaker 2: But like, that did not go well last year, and
- 22:05Speaker 2: you know, the Cubs are going to be playing one
- 22:08Speaker 2: run games in mid to late September. They can't have
- 22:12Speaker 2: some of the mistakes that happened with Pete and that
- 22:16Speaker 2: was kind of given ninety feet to the other team,
- 22:18Speaker 2: you know, diving for balls that you just let fall
- 22:20Speaker 2: in front of you, or like getting thrown out at
- 22:22Speaker 2: third base. It's just like stuff like that. I think
- 22:27Speaker 2: leaves the Cubs in a really interesting spot here, and
- 22:30Speaker 2: it's kind of the central tension to like Jed's time
- 22:33Speaker 2: here of like how how much do you prioritize and
- 22:37Speaker 2: protect that you know, kind of abstract future and how
- 22:40Speaker 2: much of it is just kind of like going for
- 22:42Speaker 2: it right now.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the PCA promotion is kind of instructive
- 22:48Speaker 1: on a few things, Like you really got to emphasize
- 22:52Speaker 1: to the guy like, hey, you're not here to save anything.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You're here, Yeah, here's your role, Here's what we need
- 22:58Speaker 1: you to do. Don't trying to press anyone. Like he
- 23:01Speaker 1: was going one hundred miles per hour, Like everything that
- 23:05Speaker 1: he did we've seen this year. He's a better base
- 23:07Speaker 1: runner than he showed last year. Like there was such
- 23:09Speaker 1: reckless things that he did on the bass Pats that
- 23:12Speaker 1: I feel like he was just trying to do stuff
- 23:14Speaker 1: and wasn't like paying attention to a scouting report. And
- 23:18Speaker 1: like Elias Diaz has this cannon for an arm and
- 23:21Speaker 1: got him I think a couple times in Colorado right
- 23:23Speaker 1: that that stands out to me. And just like the
- 23:27Speaker 1: lack of familiarity with his corner outfielders, things like that,
- 23:31Speaker 1: just like he was he was trying to make plays
- 23:34Speaker 1: instead of just letting it come to him. I do
- 23:35Speaker 1: feel like it's gotten better there. Well, like it was
- 23:38Speaker 1: also instructive I think for all of us as far
- 23:41Speaker 1: as analysis of that, Like he had what like twenty
- 23:46Speaker 1: plate appearances or something like that, and we like, like
- 23:50Speaker 1: even Jed was saying, like, well we saw what his
- 23:52Speaker 1: weakness was, did we? Like we thought it was the
- 23:55Speaker 1: high fastball. It's because that's all they threw him. Like
- 23:57Speaker 1: I think that's what Like, isn't that like old baseball
- 24:01Speaker 1: maxim like, here's my fastball, try and hit it. I'm
- 24:04Speaker 1: gonna throw it to you until you can't exactly for me,
- 24:07Speaker 1: you can hit it. Well, he didn't prove he could
- 24:09Speaker 1: hit it right or lay off of the high one.
- 24:12Speaker 1: We didn't get to really see as other holes. Now
- 24:14Speaker 1: we're starting to see them right, like the breaking ball
- 24:18Speaker 1: down and in and like I talked to Pete about this,
- 24:21Speaker 1: He's he's immensely frustrated by how he his struggles with that,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but he also knows like I'm going to put in
- 24:28Speaker 1: the work and like this is something that I talk
- 24:31Speaker 1: to other people about, like they that's not a concern
- 24:34Speaker 1: him putting in the work, his focus, his ability to
- 24:37Speaker 1: identify these issues. It's always like, what do they come
- 24:41Speaker 1: out the other side? You just don't know. Right, you
- 24:43Speaker 1: can put in all the work, you just don't know
- 24:45Speaker 1: if they come out on the other side. I think
- 24:47Speaker 1: they do believe that this. This leads me to another topic. Patrick.
- 24:52Speaker 1: There's I look at their top I look at like
- 24:55Speaker 1: the updated top one hundreds. Most of them have like
- 24:58Speaker 1: seven cups on this list. Right, there's Kevin al Contra
- 25:02Speaker 1: is one of them, right, and he's starting to look
- 25:05Speaker 1: better at the plate after finally being healthy in a
- 25:07Speaker 1: really terrible slow start. One thing I get from scouts
- 25:10Speaker 1: around the game is and someone told me this. Someone
- 25:13Speaker 1: told me in pretty much twenty to twenty five other orgs,
- 25:19Speaker 1: he'd be the best center fielder, he'd be the best
- 25:22Speaker 1: defensive center fielder. Cubs are lucky enough to have one
- 25:26Speaker 1: of the elites in Armstrong. That really changes things because
- 25:31Speaker 1: it went from this guy's going to be a power
- 25:34Speaker 1: hitting corner outfielder to whoa, whoa wait, this guy figured out,
- 25:38Speaker 1: like he's got these long limbs, long strides, can cover
- 25:41Speaker 1: a ton of ground in center field. He's pretty fast
- 25:45Speaker 1: and he's got this offensive upside if he can play center, Like,
- 25:48Speaker 1: suddenly that's a really I mean, it was always a
- 25:51Speaker 1: really valuable prospect, but now it's like it makes it
- 25:53Speaker 1: like scouts are more interested, even more interested and intrigued
- 25:57Speaker 1: that like now they have to weigh what like how
- 26:02Speaker 1: do they handle that? Is is he a trade piece now? Right?
- 26:05Speaker 1: Is he a trade piece in the off season? Do
- 26:08Speaker 1: they get bowled over for an like do they fall
- 26:10Speaker 1: in love with all Contra and get bowled over for
- 26:12Speaker 1: an offer for Pete crow Armstrong? Right? These are the
- 26:15Speaker 1: way like very much like value oriented decisions that they
- 26:20Speaker 1: have to that they have to make. Another name I
- 26:22Speaker 1: would pay attention to if the Cubs are buyers, and
- 26:26Speaker 1: I think we need to couch this with it's going
- 26:29Speaker 1: to be really hard for them to be buyers for rentals,
- 26:33Speaker 1: especially if they're giving up a bigger prospect, right for
- 26:37Speaker 1: bigger names. Yeah, yeah, they like, it's just going to
- 26:41Speaker 1: be hard, Like they unless they win the next ten
- 26:44Speaker 1: to fifteen games or something like that and and like
- 26:47Speaker 1: go to eighty percent playoff something, you know, chances it's
- 26:51Speaker 1: just very unlikely. So, but James Trianto's has upped his
- 26:57Speaker 1: value as well, and we talked so much about Match Show.
- 27:00Speaker 1: It's because you and I both hear a ton of
- 27:02Speaker 1: positive from the ORG on mattch Shaw. This org loves
- 27:06Speaker 1: match Shaw, right, we've heard that pretty much like a
- 27:10Speaker 1: month after they drafted him, we've been hearing nothing but
- 27:12Speaker 1: rave reviews. I talked to someone in the ORG that
- 27:16Speaker 1: said it, you know, he, like Trianto's, is right behind
- 27:20Speaker 1: Shaw as far as the work ethic and the dogged
- 27:22Speaker 1: nature at which they take how seriously they take their
- 27:25Speaker 1: craft when especially like in the cage and working with
- 27:30Speaker 1: coaches and really like understanding what they need to do
- 27:34Speaker 1: to improve. And if you look at his career path
- 27:36Speaker 1: so far, he's kind of done that. Like it was like, Okay,
- 27:39Speaker 1: this is this is the guy that will put the
- 27:40Speaker 1: ball in play, but he'll never really tap into power.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I believe, like I don't have his numbers in front
- 27:46Speaker 1: of me, but I believe he's starting to tap into
- 27:48Speaker 1: that power now. Yeah. Yeah, he's doubled his ISO this
- 27:53Speaker 1: year or nearly. He's he's a much better prospect than
- 27:57Speaker 1: he was entering the season. And like Shaw, he's like,
- 28:02Speaker 1: you know, like you're not one hundred percent where he's
- 28:04Speaker 1: playing you could see him at second, you could see
- 28:07Speaker 1: him somewhere like in the outfield if needed, you could, like,
- 28:10Speaker 1: I think shop has a better chance of sticking in
- 28:12Speaker 1: the infield than Toreanto's does. But regardless, like this is
- 28:16Speaker 1: a bat forward prospect that that people like I would
- 28:20Speaker 1: pay attention to those two names. Right when it comes
- 28:23Speaker 1: to possible trades. If the Cubs are being aggressive, it
- 28:28Speaker 1: would have I think it would have to be to
- 28:29Speaker 1: help twenty twenty five too, So we may be talking
- 28:32Speaker 1: about this again in the off season. Those are the
- 28:36Speaker 1: types of things that I think about when I look
- 28:38Speaker 1: at the like at least the top of the Cubs
- 28:41Speaker 1: prospect you know, they're like top seven to eight prospects.
- 28:47Speaker 1: That's what I think about. And I'll just add like
- 28:49Speaker 1: I do like the depth they're creating. Every single time
- 28:51Speaker 1: I look like you and I like looked at each other, like,
- 28:54Speaker 1: what is this draft pick with Jackson Wiggins? He's I
- 28:59Speaker 1: know it's the lower levels, but he looks pretty good.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Like they they're they're doing well as far as early
- 29:05Speaker 1: results with their draft so far. Right, Like I think
- 29:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty, I'm going to give them a pass because
- 29:12Speaker 1: of how weird that was, and it was the beginning
- 29:14Speaker 1: of a new regime and it wasn't fully formed. Like
- 29:19Speaker 1: I want to see results on the major league field,
- 29:22Speaker 1: but I do. I do think I'm seeing like it
- 29:26Speaker 1: never was like this where it's like it's not just
- 29:28Speaker 1: the first round guy that you're paying. Like if you
- 29:30Speaker 1: look up box scores or tough to scouts, they're like,
- 29:33Speaker 1: it's kind of interesting, this guy's this guy could be
- 29:36Speaker 1: a fifth starter. This like Jackson Wiggins, who knows what
- 29:39Speaker 1: his upside is, he could be a top one under
- 29:41Speaker 1: prospect someday. Like that's that wasn't happening. It just wasn't.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I think two interesting thoughts there with uh, I'm
- 29:51Speaker 2: glad you mentioned Trianto's because he I believe he's just
- 29:55Speaker 2: in the All Star Futures Game and he you know,
- 29:59Speaker 2: he's someone who reclassified to come out into the draft earlier.
- 30:04Speaker 3: And what the Cubs said then was like, this is.
- 30:07Speaker 2: What the best college hitters in the draft look like
- 30:11Speaker 2: in high school and just for comparison. James Triantos was
- 30:16Speaker 2: born in January two thousand and three. Cam Smith was
- 30:20Speaker 2: born in February two thousand and three, and Treanto's already
- 30:24Speaker 2: has a very nice half season at Double A Tennessee
- 30:30Speaker 2: where we don't know exactly why or what's going on,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but the offensive numbers are down. It is not a
- 30:37Speaker 2: good offensive environment, and Trianto's has an OPS close to
- 30:41Speaker 2: eight hundred, and so I think this is something that
- 30:43Speaker 2: Jed has wrestled with for a while now of like
- 30:48Speaker 2: what is the best version of the Cubs?
- 30:50Speaker 3: What is the longest runway?
- 30:52Speaker 2: And a lot of these kind of contracts are timed
- 30:56Speaker 2: up through twenty twenty six, and so like much as
- 31:00Speaker 2: you love Nico Horner, like kind of what happens to
- 31:04Speaker 2: him after that?
- 31:05Speaker 3: And Ianhab.
- 31:07Speaker 2: By the end of twenty twenty six will be a
- 31:09Speaker 2: free agent, won't have no trade clause, like spots will open.
- 31:14Speaker 2: But the problem that I think Jed would agree with
- 31:17Speaker 2: is that Triple A Baseball is like, if it's not worthless,
- 31:22Speaker 2: it's not a very productive tool in terms of like
- 31:26Speaker 2: helping a player.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Finish off his development. Like there's a huge gap between
- 31:32Speaker 3: the show and IOWA.
- 31:35Speaker 2: It's maybe bigger than it's ever been, and so like
- 31:38Speaker 2: kind of waiting around for that is extremely difficult, and
- 31:42Speaker 2: then that runs the risk of I was just looking
- 31:45Speaker 2: through kind of the cups forty man of you know,
- 31:48Speaker 2: it's really unfortunate. But like Brennan Davis is hurt again,
- 31:54Speaker 2: the pitching, like how long can it stay healthy? And
- 32:01Speaker 2: we're looking at now Kate Horton laps we heard heading
- 32:05Speaker 2: into the All Star break was like throwing off a
- 32:07Speaker 2: flat ground in Arizona. That does not sound like someone
- 32:11Speaker 2: who's going to be ramped up really hard and really
- 32:15Speaker 2: fast to get to Wrigley Field. And now there you
- 32:20Speaker 2: take a number seven pick who already had Tommy John,
- 32:25Speaker 2: who didn't have a lot of innings on his resume.
- 32:28Speaker 3: To begin with.
- 32:30Speaker 2: That to me, just speaking as an interpreter, not like
- 32:34Speaker 2: hard information, doesn't sound like he's going to be back
- 32:36Speaker 2: very soon or like that they're going to like push
- 32:38Speaker 2: this hard to get him back. Jordan Wicks was he
- 32:44Speaker 2: is is an oblique His recovery from that had sort
- 32:49Speaker 2: of plateaued at least that's what it was last week,
- 32:54Speaker 2: and counsels said that you could remove him from that
- 32:58Speaker 2: group of pictures. They hoped to get healthy by the.
- 33:01Speaker 3: End of July.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And now, like Jordan Wicks is not John Lester, okay,
- 33:07Speaker 2: but like he's shown, he's like a competent major league
- 33:12Speaker 2: starter and has like an interesting you know, kind of
- 33:17Speaker 2: he brings something interesting to the table, and I think
- 33:20Speaker 2: you can project you a nice long major league career,
- 33:23Speaker 2: but he hasn't done that yet. He hasn't like dominated yet.
- 33:28Speaker 2: And Ben Brown as well. I mean, when he was
- 33:30Speaker 2: throwing that no hitter against the Brewers were flirting with
- 33:35Speaker 2: a no hitter, it was like, oh, man, that David
- 33:37Speaker 2: Robertson trade, Like Jad's a genius and like it was
- 33:40Speaker 2: a good trade. Interesting pitcher's got great stuff. Interesting dude
- 33:46Speaker 2: as well, very thoughtful and curious, but like you know,
- 33:50Speaker 2: he's been kind of stuck in catch play unless something's
- 33:54Speaker 2: changed here during during the All Star break, but that
- 33:57Speaker 2: did not sound like a I they were close to
- 34:02Speaker 2: activating because he's still feeling those symptoms in his neck.
- 34:06Speaker 3: And so because you're.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Curious how to ask counsel, I was like, yeah, someone's
- 34:11Speaker 2: asking me this, what Like I'm assuming you don't have
- 34:15Speaker 2: an answer. Yeah, but whenever he is healthy, like what
- 34:18Speaker 2: sort of role would he be?
- 34:19Speaker 3: And he's like, just get out. So it's like, oh outgetter.
- 34:21Speaker 2: He's like it is like murk on his face, and
- 34:25Speaker 2: I was like, okay, outgetter. I got it, so in
- 34:27Speaker 2: case you're wondering to see him as an outgetter in
- 34:30Speaker 2: the future.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Side, he mentioned that he mentioned something similar to me
- 34:37Speaker 1: in Saint Louis about outgetterings. I'm like, you know what,
- 34:39Speaker 1: the fans love that they love hearing this outgetter h
- 34:46Speaker 1: which was obviously me just giving it back to him. Yeah,
- 34:50Speaker 1: he I love I do. I mean, he's right, it's
- 34:54Speaker 1: so sometimes it's so like it's uh he also, I'm
- 35:00Speaker 1: getting a little in the weeds here. But at one point,
- 35:03Speaker 1: you know, we kind of ask more questions after the
- 35:06Speaker 1: camera's gone right, like but it's still on the record,
- 35:09Speaker 1: but it's it's just us reporters, and as the camera's
- 35:12Speaker 1: kind of walking away, I kind of like sometimes I
- 35:15Speaker 1: like have my mouth open or like you can tell
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm like thinking, and he's like, he looks at me.
- 35:19Speaker 1: He's like, you have more, don't you? You didn't like
- 35:22Speaker 1: my answer? You didn't like my answer about hitting with
- 35:25Speaker 1: runners in scoring position? Well, what was that not good
- 35:28Speaker 1: enough for me?
- 35:29Speaker 3: It mustn't be.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I'm like, no, no, no, the answer is fine. I
- 35:32Speaker 1: was going to a different topic, but I just he
- 35:36Speaker 1: likes to poke fun and he likes to he knows
- 35:40Speaker 1: some of his sayings aren't satisfactory. I think to the masses, right,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I would get it. He's satisfactory to everyone. They're like, no,
- 35:48Speaker 1: he's a closer, No he's a starter. No, he's an
- 35:50Speaker 1: eighth inning setup man. That's not how his brain works.
- 35:53Speaker 1: He's looking together twenty seven outs and like it's like
- 35:57Speaker 1: when I asked him, one of the first questions I
- 35:59Speaker 1: ever asked him was about value of of like how
- 36:02Speaker 1: the impact of a of a superstar in the lineup
- 36:05Speaker 1: and and ultimately it's like you're piecing together wins. It's like,
- 36:08Speaker 1: if it's one guy has eight is worth eight, fine,
- 36:11Speaker 1: But if you can have a few other guys that,
- 36:13Speaker 1: you know, if you have a five and a three,
- 36:15Speaker 1: that can maybe equal the same thing. Right, But it's
- 36:18Speaker 1: not satisfactory always, it's not. It doesn't always like for
- 36:23Speaker 1: the average baseball fan especially, but it's not how his
- 36:25Speaker 1: mind works anyways. Yeah, he's a this A I think
- 36:32Speaker 1: there's this is going to be a busy like next
- 36:35Speaker 1: couple of weeks beyond just what we just talked about, right, Like,
- 36:38Speaker 1: there's a lot of ins and outs as far as
- 36:40Speaker 1: the injuries go like Mike Talkman is supposed to be back.
- 36:43Speaker 1: It sounds like Friday for sure. Uh, there's a minor
- 36:46Speaker 1: move that was made. Daniel Planci was sent down and
- 36:48Speaker 1: they added a player from Kansas City a relief. Yes,
- 36:54Speaker 1: and I'm meant to look this up. Is he on
- 36:57Speaker 1: the forty man because then there's another move coming.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Jesus to Noco. Okay, I don't know if I pronounce
- 37:03Speaker 2: that right. I don't know if he's on the forty man.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I assume not because there wasn't another move conveyed to us,
- 37:10Speaker 2: because I don't I think that, Like Julian Merriweather's really close.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Like there's just a lot of things happening right now.
- 37:16Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting to see how they handle it.
- 37:19Speaker 1: You mentioned Brendan Davis. There's Matt Morvis and Nick Maderill
- 37:22Speaker 1: are both Minor league on the Minor League IL. That's
- 37:26Speaker 1: three guys not on your roster on the IL and
- 37:29Speaker 1: the minors with decently significant injuries. I don't know how
- 37:32Speaker 1: they're going to handle all this stuff. That's up to
- 37:35Speaker 1: them to figure out. We'll we'll obviously give you guys
- 37:37Speaker 1: the news when we have more of it. But yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 1: right now. We're just waiting to see what happens in
- 37:44Speaker 1: the second half. Like it's a very weird spot that
- 37:48Speaker 1: the Cubs are in because it's yet again we're in
- 37:51Speaker 1: this like we're not clear on what they're doing. This
- 37:53Speaker 1: feels a little different than last year because last year
- 37:55Speaker 1: happened so quickly where we shifted and it's felt like
- 37:59Speaker 1: every day we were changing our minds. It's a different
- 38:03Speaker 1: feeling because of what they have on the roster, right,
- 38:05Speaker 1: so we know it's not going to be some huge
- 38:07Speaker 1: sell off and it's not going to be a completely
- 38:08Speaker 1: different team whether they buy or sell. It just isn't
- 38:11Speaker 1: like especially if they if it's sell, quote unquote, it
- 38:15Speaker 1: won't be a majorly different team. All right, Patrick, We'll
- 38:18Speaker 1: be back at this again later this week. This is
- 38:22Speaker 1: a Northside territory. Thanks so much for everyone behind the
- 38:25Speaker 1: scenes for all the work you do to put this
- 38:26Speaker 1: podcast together. Thank you for everyone that listens. Make sure
- 38:30Speaker 1: to rate, review and subscribe to the Podcastree Patrick. In
- 38:33Speaker 1: my work at the Athletic, we'll be I get it
- 38:36Speaker 1: in covering this team all week and they're during their
- 38:39Speaker 1: homestand and then next week in ac and Sincy before
- 38:43Speaker 1: the trade deadline. It's going to be hectic. We will
- 38:45Speaker 1: be there for you. Thanks everyone for listening to think
- 38:48Speaker 1: of
