- 0:08Speaker 1: Ball and they all will whist so yes, but what
- 0:12Speaker 1: didn't you expect? It's a podcast called twenty five Whistles.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Welcome to Whistles, presented by Draft Kings Sports Book, an
- 0:23Speaker 1: official sports betting partner of the NFL. Download the Draft
- 0:26Speaker 1: Kings app and used the code Bobby sports to get
- 0:28Speaker 1: in on the action. My favorite interviews of the year.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode. If you miss last week, go
- 0:35Speaker 1: check that one out because it was Colin Cowherd, Marcellus Wiley,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Jay Glazer, all amazing was. The show has only been
- 0:41Speaker 1: up since August, but maybe you're new to it. You
- 0:43Speaker 1: can catch some of that. You know. This week's list, man,
- 0:46Speaker 1: it's just my favorites Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen both from
- 0:50Speaker 1: ESPN back in the day, not to mention Paul Finebaum,
- 0:53Speaker 1: who I love, my friend. You'll also hear me talk
- 0:56Speaker 1: with one of the best NFL insiders, Ian Rappaport. It's
- 0:58Speaker 1: awesome at first Up Dan Patrick. I mean, he's the
- 1:02Speaker 1: he's the legend. He's the goat. Whether you watch Sports
- 1:04Speaker 1: Center back in the nineties or two thousand's, which I did,
- 1:07Speaker 1: or listen to Dan Patrick show on the radio, which
- 1:10Speaker 1: I do or watched which I or which I do? Everything?
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'm all Dan Patrick all the time. But here was
- 1:15Speaker 1: this interview where Dan talks about his journey from ESPN
- 1:19Speaker 1: hosting one of the biggest talk shows in the country.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Also his last second trip to Atlanta was a catalyst
- 1:25Speaker 1: for gettinghim where he is now professionally. So I hope
- 1:27Speaker 1: you enjoyed this interview because I did with Dan Patrick.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Whoa Dan Good to talk to you. I'm big, just
- 1:34Speaker 1: massive fan, just a massive, massive fans. So you know
- 1:37Speaker 1: when they said you would actually spend a few minutes
- 1:39Speaker 1: with me, I I was shocked first of all, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: it elated. So just humble thank you before we start. Great, great,
- 1:46Speaker 1: Glad to Glad to hill. You know, whenever I'm doing
- 1:49Speaker 1: an interview and in one capacity or the other, I
- 1:52Speaker 1: do them all the day, all the time, either on
- 1:53Speaker 1: the radio show or on a TV show. But I
- 1:57Speaker 1: it starts to just be a wheel and you just
- 2:00Speaker 1: doing them as they come, and you rarely get excited.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Sometimes you're a little more up for one because you
- 2:05Speaker 1: know the value of a bit. At this point in
- 2:06Speaker 1: your career, do you still get pumped about interviews and
- 2:10Speaker 1: with who especially. I think if you have somebody who's
- 2:13Speaker 1: going to be honest with you, because you want to
- 2:15Speaker 1: make sure you're not wasting the time of your audience.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And I always want to make sure if I have
- 2:20Speaker 1: somebody on, maybe you don't know who they are, but
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna bring out something in them that you would
- 2:24Speaker 1: be interested in. I like the challenge of doing that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But it's the person who's going to be honest or
- 2:29Speaker 1: most honest that I find interesting. It's the person who
- 2:33Speaker 1: tries to dodge what you're asking, doesn't give you much,
- 2:36Speaker 1: wants to be very vanilla. Then that's where it gets
- 2:39Speaker 1: really tedious. Give me an example of somebody who's great
- 2:41Speaker 1: that you know, all right, we're gonna do it and
- 2:43Speaker 1: they're gonna be awesome. Charles Barkley is always great. Reggie
- 2:47Speaker 1: Miller is always great. I find that if you know
- 2:51Speaker 1: my guests know if they come on the show, that
- 2:54Speaker 1: this is what we're asking them to do. Don't come
- 2:57Speaker 1: on the show unless you're ready to really give something,
- 3:00Speaker 1: reveals something. But it's up to me sometimes to kind
- 3:03Speaker 1: of extract thumb that from these guys. They get interviewed
- 3:07Speaker 1: more than anybody. When you think about it, athletes are
- 3:10Speaker 1: interviewed more than anybody you know where they are. You know, uh,
- 3:14Speaker 1: everyday at practice, um, you know, before a game, after
- 3:17Speaker 1: a game with the NBA, you have to have an
- 3:20Speaker 1: approach that is refreshing to them and their competitors. And
- 3:24Speaker 1: I find I got to compete with you to get
- 3:26Speaker 1: an answer out of you. John McEnroe said you gotta
- 3:29Speaker 1: work harder to get a better answer out of me,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and he was right. This is early in my career,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and I never forgot that sometimes you gotta work harder
- 3:38Speaker 1: to get a better answer out of somebody. Do you
- 3:40Speaker 1: feel like you're a better interviewee because you interview so
- 3:44Speaker 1: many people? Because you know, what I'll do is all
- 3:47Speaker 1: critique your questions while you're asking them, and it's not
- 3:51Speaker 1: fair to you. But I've given so much thought to interviewing.
- 3:55Speaker 1: When I was at ESPN, I did a seminar that
- 3:59Speaker 1: was five days, eight hours each day on interviewing. It
- 4:05Speaker 1: was the best thing that ever happened to me in
- 4:07Speaker 1: my career. But it's the worst thing when you start
- 4:10Speaker 1: to listen to radio or you listen to somebody on
- 4:12Speaker 1: TV doing interviews because you're listening for the things that
- 4:16Speaker 1: they're not doing what you were told to do to
- 4:19Speaker 1: bring out a good interview. Open ended questions, short question,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know that first question, what are you setting up
- 4:26Speaker 1: for the next question? For your last question? What are
- 4:29Speaker 1: you trying to get at? Like there's a strategy to it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And I wouldn't have known this until I took this class.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It was a guy named John Swatsky out of Canada.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It was the master of the Interview, and I was
- 4:42Speaker 1: fascinated by it. I don't know who else, if anybody
- 4:45Speaker 1: else was at ESPN. They they were mad at me
- 4:48Speaker 1: because I wanted to bring this guy in to teach
- 4:50Speaker 1: us how to interview, because I saw an article and
- 4:53Speaker 1: people are like kicking and screaming going to this seminar,
- 4:57Speaker 1: and they didn't realize that I'm the reason why they
- 4:59Speaker 1: were going there, because I wanted this guy to come
- 5:01Speaker 1: in and help us. You know, when you talk about
- 5:03Speaker 1: the ESPN stuff, and I don't have a lot of
- 5:05Speaker 1: questions about that, and I still don't, but it makes
- 5:07Speaker 1: me think about, you know, my whole lifetime of watching
- 5:10Speaker 1: you on ESPN and even Rock and Roll Jeopardy, which
- 5:12Speaker 1: I was a big Jeopardy guys and a music guy obviously,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and then you know, watching on Sunday nights and I
- 5:17Speaker 1: would come home from the radio show and watch your
- 5:20Speaker 1: radio show, you and all the day neds like just
- 5:22Speaker 1: a massive fan. But you know, I've started to realize
- 5:25Speaker 1: that I, as a public figure, people think they know
- 5:27Speaker 1: me at times more than they actually do, and they'll
- 5:30Speaker 1: come up and and so you know, one of the
- 5:32Speaker 1: things that I'm most curious about, it's like if you
- 5:34Speaker 1: go to your house and I feel like I know, yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 1: but I obviously don't on a personal level, Like in
- 5:38Speaker 1: your house, what is your favorite picture in your house?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Which if I just asked that question, what is it?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Who's in it? I'm a big fan of the artist
- 5:46Speaker 1: Wolf Khan. He passed away. I think he was just
- 5:50Speaker 1: over the age of ninety. And you can't be in
- 5:53Speaker 1: a bad mood when you look at a painting of
- 5:55Speaker 1: Wolf Khan. Now pictures. Uh, there's a picture of my
- 5:59Speaker 1: daughter in the library where she's in Galway, and she's
- 6:04Speaker 1: in a mud puddle and she's probably eleven years of age,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and she's got mud all over her. She's thrown mud
- 6:12Speaker 1: in the air, and she's got the biggest smile, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's one of those moments that you just go that
- 6:18Speaker 1: person is having a great day. So I tend to
- 6:21Speaker 1: gravitate towards you feel better after you you see that
- 6:25Speaker 1: picture and you see a painting from wolf Kan. What
- 6:28Speaker 1: about if I ask about sports, what personal sports picture
- 6:31Speaker 1: do you have? Either you're somewhere with someone that you
- 6:34Speaker 1: look at and it's not it doesn't mean as much
- 6:37Speaker 1: because obviously that's your daughter, but it's like, man, that
- 6:39Speaker 1: was a great moment, either in sports life or my life.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I was in a boxing ring. It was fight night
- 6:46Speaker 1: in Arizona, and I was the host and we were
- 6:49Speaker 1: honoring Mohammad Ali and we were going to give him
- 6:53Speaker 1: this ring. And Mohammad Ali is standing next to me
- 6:57Speaker 1: waiting for me to give him this ring. And I'm
- 7:00Speaker 1: describing to the audience what this ring signifies, and I'm
- 7:04Speaker 1: going to hand this to Mohammed Ali. And you know
- 7:09Speaker 1: that this was probably a twenty years ago, but you know,
- 7:13Speaker 1: Parkinson's the onset of Parkinson had started there, and I
- 7:18Speaker 1: just remember in the moment, I'm thinking I'm going to
- 7:21Speaker 1: give a ring to Mohammed Ali, and I sort of
- 7:26Speaker 1: fanboyd that. I was like I gotta get this out
- 7:28Speaker 1: of my head because I sometimes that's the problem. I
- 7:31Speaker 1: have too many things I'm thinking of when I'm doing
- 7:33Speaker 1: something that I shouldn't be thinking about. But that moment
- 7:36Speaker 1: where I look and I go, who would have thought
- 7:39Speaker 1: that a kid came from a small town in Ohio?
- 7:42Speaker 1: Is there with Mohammed Ali honoring Mohammed Ali, and I'm
- 7:47Speaker 1: it's never lost on me where I came from and
- 7:49Speaker 1: growing up in a big family, that I came a
- 7:53Speaker 1: long way, but that you can come from a small
- 7:57Speaker 1: town where you never would have thought you've gotten So
- 8:00Speaker 1: it brings out a lot of different thoughts memories there
- 8:03Speaker 1: of you're still this kid who was from Mason, Ohio,
- 8:07Speaker 1: but you got here. Don't forget where you came from
- 8:10Speaker 1: from Mountain Pine, Arkansas, population seven uh So similar instances,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you know, growing up and there wasn't a lot of
- 8:19Speaker 1: resource where I came from. So how what showed you
- 8:23Speaker 1: and who showed you that there was actually a path
- 8:26Speaker 1: to greater even though you couldn't quite define greater. I
- 8:29Speaker 1: think I was too naive or stupid to let reality
- 8:34Speaker 1: sink in and that you can't do this. I didn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: have a plan b so when people said, oh, if
- 8:40Speaker 1: you weren't going to be a sports conister, what would
- 8:42Speaker 1: you be? And I've been like, I don't I don't know.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm guessing bartender. But I didn't know. And I had
- 8:48Speaker 1: been rejected in quite a few places. I lost a job,
- 8:53Speaker 1: local job in Dayton, Ohio, and I was distraught. So
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm I'm twenty six seven. I don't have a full
- 9:02Speaker 1: time job in sports, and that's old in this business
- 9:05Speaker 1: to get started. And I thought I'm never gonna get in.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I was doing morning drive radio rock and roll station,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and I thought, this is what I'm gonna be doing.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And the next girlfriend said, just come down to Atlanta.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I said, now, I don't want to go to Atlanta.
- 9:21Speaker 1: She goes, no, just come down your CNN's hiring. I go,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I just I lost out on a job in Dayton, Ohio.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm not going to get a job at CNN. So
- 9:28Speaker 1: I go down there, lo and behold. I go in there.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Last day I'm in Atlanta, give my resume. Tape guy says,
- 9:36Speaker 1: when can you start? So if I don't go to Atlanta,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm not here. I mean I'm somewhere, but I'm not
- 9:44Speaker 1: here because CNN. I was there for five years and
- 9:49Speaker 1: after that I went to ESPN for eighteen So I
- 9:53Speaker 1: always tell people right place, right time, but you better
- 9:56Speaker 1: be right about what you have to know, like have
- 10:00Speaker 1: to know it if you get that opportunity. And I'm
- 10:02Speaker 1: sure that at some point somebody wanted to see if
- 10:05Speaker 1: you knew exactly what you needed to know, and you did,
- 10:10Speaker 1: or you wouldn't be seated there. Like we get those moments,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but be ready for the moment. And that was something
- 10:15Speaker 1: that stayed with me, stays with me. I tell that
- 10:18Speaker 1: to my kids all the time. Be prepared, be overprepared.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Even if you don't get it, you'll still show that
- 10:24Speaker 1: that person you showed them respect by being prepared. You
- 10:27Speaker 1: mentioned eighteen years at ESPN, and I worked on American
- 10:31Speaker 1: Idol for four seasons, and I would talk to some
- 10:33Speaker 1: of the old contestants from back when Idol was so big,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and but they said they didn't know it, they couldn't
- 10:39Speaker 1: feel it because they were in it now. ESPN was
- 10:41Speaker 1: a culture. Especially for me, Was that situation similar because
- 10:46Speaker 1: you guys weren't changing culture. Did you know it and
- 10:48Speaker 1: could you feel it then or was it its own bubble?
- 10:52Speaker 1: We were cordoned off absolutely, and I think that's by
- 10:55Speaker 1: design by management. They didn't want us to be bigger
- 11:00Speaker 1: than those four letters. Not that we could be, but
- 11:04Speaker 1: they didn't want us coloring outside the lines. Management even
- 11:08Speaker 1: told me on one occasion, we don't want another Chris Berman,
- 11:11Speaker 1: because Berman is the most important person in the history
- 11:15Speaker 1: of ESPN. But he was sort of, you know, a
- 11:19Speaker 1: hot air balloon that was higher than everybody else but
- 11:22Speaker 1: still tethered, and they didn't want that. They didn't want
- 11:25Speaker 1: that to happen to me or Keith Oberman or Stewart
- 11:28Speaker 1: Scott or whoever you want to throw in there. So
- 11:30Speaker 1: they they didn't want you to be a personality. Um
- 11:36Speaker 1: so I think that that was kind of eye opening
- 11:38Speaker 1: that we were getting honored. Mentioned. Uh, people came up
- 11:44Speaker 1: to us when we saw them when we were out
- 11:47Speaker 1: of events, but we weren't in New York or l A.
- 11:50Speaker 1: We're in Bristol, Connecticut. We didn't run into anybody. But
- 11:53Speaker 1: when we did, then you heard the impact that we
- 11:57Speaker 1: were having. And you kind juxtapose that to management that
- 12:03Speaker 1: we never knew our ratings. They never told us. They didn't.
- 12:06Speaker 1: They don't want to empower you and say, you guys
- 12:09Speaker 1: are really kicking the ass here. It was like, yeah,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you guys solid and improving, you know, kind of doing
- 12:15Speaker 1: a good job. There You're like, damn, I thought I
- 12:17Speaker 1: thought we were good, but that was that was eye
- 12:20Speaker 1: opening there that management wanted to kind of keep us
- 12:23Speaker 1: under their thumb. Final question about the ESPN days and
- 12:28Speaker 1: as far as when who is would you say as
- 12:30Speaker 1: your BFF now from those days if you had to
- 12:33Speaker 1: pick one, Oh, I would say that I correspond with
- 12:37Speaker 1: Rich Eyes and more than anybody else, the people I
- 12:40Speaker 1: really enjoyed were producers, associate producers, the makeup people, camera people.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Those are the people I always enjoyed being around. Nobody
- 12:52Speaker 1: wants to be around talent because all we do is
- 12:55Speaker 1: talk about ourselves. I wanted to be around the people
- 12:59Speaker 1: who were just normal or as normal as possible in
- 13:02Speaker 1: our business, and those are the people I'm still in
- 13:05Speaker 1: touch with, uh more the producers than the talent there,
- 13:10Speaker 1: but probably Rich Eyes. How hard is it to have
- 13:13Speaker 1: a source that's telling you something but you can't say it.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You almost have to act like you don't know it.
- 13:17Speaker 1: For the most part, I don't want to know if
- 13:19Speaker 1: I can't use it. I say that too. And I'm
- 13:22Speaker 1: fortunate having been in this business for almost forty years.
- 13:25Speaker 1: You meet people that you trust because you can go
- 13:27Speaker 1: back to them or they'll they'll they'll let you know
- 13:31Speaker 1: if you're right or wrong on something. But I I
- 13:34Speaker 1: don't want to know something that I can't even hint
- 13:36Speaker 1: at because then I'm not being Then it's gossipy and
- 13:39Speaker 1: I don't want to do that. But it is a
- 13:42Speaker 1: tough situation to be in. Sometimes if somebody goes, hey,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you can't use it, I'll don't. Then don't tell me
- 13:47Speaker 1: because I don't want to know. But when they're like,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you didn't get it from me, which is different, But
- 13:54Speaker 1: sources can be tricky. Last question, and this has really
- 13:58Speaker 1: been a treat for me, uh a more force so
- 14:00Speaker 1: for you because I'm sure you've rated this and given
- 14:02Speaker 1: it a low grade what you do. And as soon
- 14:05Speaker 1: as you said that, I was like, God, dang, and
- 14:06Speaker 1: now I am going to actually feel like I bean
- 14:08Speaker 1: critique during the interview. I didn't feel like that going in.
- 14:10Speaker 1: But final question is, uh, you know, I'm about to
- 14:13Speaker 1: go through a big contract negotiation here with a right
- 14:18Speaker 1: so you know, and it's it's it's it's quite the monster.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie to you. What's what's the What
- 14:23Speaker 1: am I? What? Am I not knowing to ask for?
- 14:26Speaker 1: What is it you don't have? I don't know. I'm
- 14:28Speaker 1: not pretty good dance. Yes, I always look at it
- 14:31Speaker 1: this way. I love for fifteen years being at ESPN,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and I could have gotten jobs outside of it, but
- 14:37Speaker 1: I loved what I was doing. But you can't tell
- 14:40Speaker 1: them that you love it so much that you don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: factor in what you're worth outside of what you're doing.
- 14:46Speaker 1: If that makes sense that, hey, on the open market,
- 14:50Speaker 1: what would I be worth? Take care of me here?
- 14:52Speaker 1: And I always took less, but I didn't have any
- 14:56Speaker 1: I didn't want to do anything else. So do what
- 14:59Speaker 1: you love. And it's really hard to find that, because
- 15:02Speaker 1: if you let money be the carrot that's in front
- 15:05Speaker 1: of you, you'll always chase it and you'll never be satisfied.
- 15:10Speaker 1: But if you have people you like, you've got you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: they make sure that the people who are surrounding you
- 15:16Speaker 1: are good people, fun people. I love seeing my guys
- 15:20Speaker 1: every single day. We just laugh. I mean, you're serious
- 15:24Speaker 1: when you need to be, but we have fun. I
- 15:26Speaker 1: enjoy them and it's twenty years for some of these guys.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But I think that's the moment you know that you've
- 15:33Speaker 1: got to kind of go. And if you say to
- 15:36Speaker 1: your wife, what do you think? Because sometimes it's my
- 15:40Speaker 1: wife is the smartest person. And you know, you get
- 15:42Speaker 1: somebody on the outside kind of looking at all this
- 15:44Speaker 1: because we get too close to the sun and you
- 15:47Speaker 1: don't want to be icarous here and you know, go
- 15:49Speaker 1: down in flame. So do what you love as long
- 15:53Speaker 1: as you can do it, or you can just take
- 15:55Speaker 1: a load of money and then run with it. But
- 15:59Speaker 1: if that's that's hey, listen, I'm just massive fan, just massive,
- 16:05Speaker 1: and thank you for your time and um, you know
- 16:07Speaker 1: that's all. And I know you've got a busy day head,
- 16:09Speaker 1: so thank you very much. And one day, hopefully I
- 16:11Speaker 1: hope I can touch you soon, you know I would.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Uh yeah, you know, I hope we crossed pounds. Congratulations
- 16:17Speaker 1: on all your success and I think that it's not
- 16:20Speaker 1: my accident, you know, but I think that that's important
- 16:23Speaker 1: as you move move forward, don't forget the kid from
- 16:27Speaker 1: a small town in Arkansas, because stay in humble, because
- 16:30Speaker 1: this business will bite you in the ask quickly. Thank
- 16:33Speaker 1: you Dan, have a good day. Thank you, Bobby. I
- 16:35Speaker 1: hope you're enjoying the interviews. A reminder of the twenty
- 16:38Speaker 1: Whistles brought to you by Draft Kings Sports Book, an

- 16:45Speaker 1: the action now. Okay, So a lot of people say,
- 16:47Speaker 1: what exactly is a parlay? So parlay is just combining
- 16:50Speaker 1: multiple bets because if they all hit, then you actually
- 16:53Speaker 1: win more if you do that. So let's say you
- 16:55Speaker 1: have three games and you want to bet um team A,

- 17:01Speaker 1: a parlay, all three of them have to win. But
- 17:04Speaker 1: if all three do win, it's even it's even a better,
- 17:07Speaker 1: it's even more smiles. I say that if you want
- 17:09Speaker 1: to take the twenty five whistles parlay each week, you

- 17:37Speaker 1: All right, back to the interviews. Paul find Bomb, love him,
- 17:40Speaker 1: watch him on TV, let's do him on the radio.
- 17:43Speaker 1: So I guess I even watch him on the SEC
- 17:46Speaker 1: network more than just Paul find Bomb Show. So I've
- 17:48Speaker 1: been on Paul show a few times. He's had me on.
- 17:51Speaker 1: It's been amazing and so finally as able to put
- 17:53Speaker 1: him on my show. And Paul tells me his top
- 17:55Speaker 1: three SEC coaches that he's actually friends with and what
- 17:58Speaker 1: inspires him to still go in every single day even
- 18:00Speaker 1: though he's had so much success. Paul is one of
- 18:02Speaker 1: the best in the business. Here's my interview with Paul
- 18:05Speaker 1: fine Bomb. Paul, I am very honored that you would
- 18:08Speaker 1: come on and and do these these shows and this
- 18:10Speaker 1: show with me. You are one of my heroes and
- 18:12Speaker 1: you know that. So thank you very much for for
- 18:14Speaker 1: being here today. It is my pleasure. Um and UM,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'm I'm in all of this opportunity. So they'll be
- 18:20Speaker 1: not waste any more time stumbling and stuttering in your closet.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Do you have your own closet of TV clothes that's
- 18:26Speaker 1: just suits and ties and shirts, and then your own
- 18:29Speaker 1: closet of normal clothes or you all shirts and ties
- 18:31Speaker 1: and suits all the time. No, I am uh I
- 18:34Speaker 1: have if I could break some news here with you
- 18:37Speaker 1: guys today. Uh. Everybody has their piccadillos and fetishes. Mine
- 18:43Speaker 1: I have a tie fetish. Uh. I. Wherever I am
- 18:48Speaker 1: in the in the world, which is more like Fayaneville
- 18:51Speaker 1: or Knoxville or Starkville, I'm always looking for new ties.
- 18:55Speaker 1: That's my my my deal because I yeah, you don't
- 18:58Speaker 1: dress up as much because you're you're you're cool. You
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't have to, but you can. You can wear the
- 19:04Speaker 1: same blue jacket every day of your life on television
- 19:06Speaker 1: and nobody has any idea, but they may remember your tie.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So that's my that's that's my go to. Yeah, my
- 19:12Speaker 1: shoes are similar. You have tie. This is my shoes today,
- 19:16Speaker 1: right are Yeah? So I have a million pair of
- 19:20Speaker 1: shoes and hopefully people notice my shoes and I can
- 19:22Speaker 1: wear the same I've standard white sweatshirt on and pants.
- 19:25Speaker 1: But shoes. Okay, so you have a lot of ties.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Do they give you a clothing allowance that you get
- 19:31Speaker 1: to buy these fancy suits? Now, I want to ask, uh,
- 19:36Speaker 1: my first big television agent who ended up leaving a
- 19:39Speaker 1: couple of years ago to become the president of the
- 19:41Speaker 1: World Wrestling Entertainment with Vince McMahon, not that that's been
- 19:45Speaker 1: in the news lately. And I asked him about that
- 19:48Speaker 1: because I was naive I was coming from Birmingham, Alabama.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I said, do I get a clothing allowance? She said,
- 19:53Speaker 1: at this level, you don't ask for clothing allow they
- 19:56Speaker 1: they assume you can pay for your own clothes. And
- 19:59Speaker 1: I I knew that was a invitation to quit talking
- 20:02Speaker 1: about it. But by the way, I have one other,
- 20:04Speaker 1: one other fetish of Bobby and it's a it's a
- 20:07Speaker 1: frame glass frame fetish. And and there's a place in
- 20:12Speaker 1: Nashville that I found a couple of years ago and
- 20:16Speaker 1: I've been. Unfortunately, we don't get back Nashural that often
- 20:20Speaker 1: thanks to vander Belt, but but I always go and
- 20:23Speaker 1: go to it, and uh, it's probably one of my
- 20:26Speaker 1: favorite frame places in the world. So when it comes
- 20:29Speaker 1: to people who are extremely interesting guys, that love ties
- 20:32Speaker 1: and frames. It's number one, right, that's skydiving. Who cares
- 20:35Speaker 1: guys that are risking their lives if you have a
- 20:38Speaker 1: tie fetish and a frame fetish, like I can imagine
- 20:40Speaker 1: the chicks you'd be having to beat off with the
- 20:41Speaker 1: stick if you were twenty two right now. Yeah. The
- 20:44Speaker 1: funniest thing was when I was in there the first
- 20:45Speaker 1: time and the lady who I think the owner. I
- 20:47Speaker 1: think it's image optical down there in there Nashville, and uh,
- 20:51Speaker 1: she was telling me, she's, oh, yeah, by the way,
- 20:53Speaker 1: Taylor Swift was in here just last week, and I'm
- 20:56Speaker 1: thinking to myself, Taylor Swift at the time was like
- 21:00Speaker 1: nineteen years old. What is she doing buying classes. I'm
- 21:02Speaker 1: never sure if I confirmed that or no. But it
- 21:04Speaker 1: was a good it was a great line. And I
- 21:05Speaker 1: saw also I'll take that one, that one, that one,
- 21:07Speaker 1: and that one. Um, but yeah, that that was the thing.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I mean. Other than that, Bobby, I'm just a pretty
- 21:12Speaker 1: boring guy who Taylor Swift no, no, no, we heard it.
- 21:17Speaker 1: A boring guy who thinks he's like Taylor Swift and
- 21:19Speaker 1: compares with his daily in life to her. Yeah, exactly,
- 21:24Speaker 1: I mean and You're probably the only person I know
- 21:26Speaker 1: that's I've ever done anything or accomplished anything, so uh,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and I won't embarrass you. I was in Nashville a
- 21:33Speaker 1: couple of years ago for something and it was a
- 21:36Speaker 1: big deal. They were having like a like an Entertainer
- 21:39Speaker 1: of the Year or something or it was just like
- 21:40Speaker 1: only invited audience, and this guy dragged me over there,
- 21:45Speaker 1: and everybody was there. I mean I mean everybody. Uh,
- 21:48Speaker 1: and I've spotted you, and I kind of nervously walked
- 21:51Speaker 1: over because I think Brad Paisley was sitting with your
- 21:53Speaker 1: Keith Urban and all of a sudden, you just jumped
- 21:55Speaker 1: up and hugged me. And I was just like thinking,
- 21:57Speaker 1: I wonder if anybody is noticing this or recording this,
- 22:00Speaker 1: maybe this will end up on whatever the network is
- 22:03Speaker 1: A Nashville see him see I'm something. But it was
- 22:07Speaker 1: really cool, And uh, that was the first time I've
- 22:10Speaker 1: ever met you, and since then I've had your people
- 22:12Speaker 1: have center restraining order. So I would never do that again. Okay. Look,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I'm a massive you fan and for you to put
- 22:21Speaker 1: me on your show, which I listened to and watch
- 22:24Speaker 1: and sometimes I go from the car to the TV
- 22:26Speaker 1: but it reminds me of back in the day when
- 22:27Speaker 1: I'll be twelve and we come in from ball practice
- 22:30Speaker 1: and you'd have to run in during a commercial so
- 22:32Speaker 1: you could catch the show. Because but I do that
- 22:34Speaker 1: with your show now, Like I'm listening, I got a
- 22:36Speaker 1: freaking hall, but to get in so I don't miss anything.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And it's rare. And I'm gonna say this is this
- 22:39Speaker 1: is a sincere compliment. It's rare in today's media world
- 22:43Speaker 1: that you care about something so much that you want
- 22:44Speaker 1: to catch it live or you want to not miss anything,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and what you do on your show now, like I
- 22:49Speaker 1: feel that with how you do your show, So as
- 22:51Speaker 1: a sincere compliment, I'd like to say, like, you're a
- 22:54Speaker 1: real reason that I look at sports and even media
- 22:58Speaker 1: in general and go, man, it can still be on
- 23:00Speaker 1: at such a high level. Do you still feel when
- 23:03Speaker 1: you go in? Are you still so inspired and fired up?
- 23:05Speaker 1: Or are you going I've got a job to make
- 23:07Speaker 1: sure people know and I'm gonna just take it seriously
- 23:09Speaker 1: and focus on what they expect to me. No, I mean,
- 23:12Speaker 1: I truly. I'll spare you all the cliches, but my
- 23:16Speaker 1: favorite time of the day is when I'm I'm sitting
- 23:18Speaker 1: behind a microphone in the studio. It really uh and
- 23:22Speaker 1: and I think if you get older, Bobby, you really
- 23:24Speaker 1: do appreciate it because you you don't know where it ends,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and mostly most of the time it ends badly. But
- 23:31Speaker 1: I've COVID changed me. Uh. You know, those that year
- 23:34Speaker 1: and a half doing a show from home, hearing the
- 23:37Speaker 1: stories uh, you know, watching uh and experiencing with so
- 23:41Speaker 1: many other people were going through Really uh, I quit
- 23:45Speaker 1: a little bit of the cynicism faded away. Now now
- 23:48Speaker 1: I must admit it's coming back pretty pretty fast. Um,
- 23:51Speaker 1: But it really was to hear stories and and now
- 23:55Speaker 1: that's probably my favorite part of not only interacting and
- 23:58Speaker 1: hearing the crazy the crazy people, as you know that's
- 24:00Speaker 1: the trademark of the show, but hearing the real life
- 24:03Speaker 1: stories the people that that have been laid up or
- 24:06Speaker 1: are you just lost a parent or or loved one,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and they talk about with this program or your program,
- 24:12Speaker 1: or what any program means to them. And I think
- 24:14Speaker 1: that's really what what we all should strive to strive
- 24:17Speaker 1: to do. And I think too many people in our
- 24:19Speaker 1: industry are only there to hear themselves talk and not
- 24:24Speaker 1: the folks that they are supposed to be serving. Who
- 24:28Speaker 1: top three SEC coaches that you would be friends with
- 24:31Speaker 1: in real life or that you are friends with in
- 24:34Speaker 1: real life, like as people, because we see them all
- 24:36Speaker 1: and we hear them all, we we think what they're cool?
- 24:39Speaker 1: But who are the top I'm not gonna ask if
- 24:41Speaker 1: you don't like the top three, that you're like, those
- 24:43Speaker 1: are my boys. And I'm not saying this to patronize you.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I mean, if I'm if I'm doing a show in Georgia,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you know you would think I'm not just saying Sam
- 24:51Speaker 1: Pittman because I genuinely like him. But I genuinely like
- 24:55Speaker 1: this guy. And and don't quote me on this, but
- 24:58Speaker 1: I normally don't like that coaches because I find them
- 25:02Speaker 1: often to be disingenuous and hypocritical. Uh. And Pittman he
- 25:06Speaker 1: introduced me to his life this year at at the
- 25:09Speaker 1: SEC Spring meetings, and I just fell in love with
- 25:11Speaker 1: these two. I mean, because you know we're we're I'm
- 25:14Speaker 1: a couple of years older, but we're in the same
- 25:15Speaker 1: age group where we're both married and we don't have children.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And I just saw a lot of myself in him
- 25:22Speaker 1: and how somen fame got to him late in life
- 25:26Speaker 1: and nobody expected it, so so he would be at
- 25:28Speaker 1: the top of my list. I mean, I mean Kiffin
- 25:31Speaker 1: is is intriguing. Uh, He's he's a you know, master manipulator.
- 25:35Speaker 1: You have to accept that. I do like Kirby smart
- 25:39Speaker 1: just to kind of round out my top three. Uh.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And I know somebody is probably saying, well, you didn't
- 25:44Speaker 1: mention this one or that one, and you know what,
- 25:46Speaker 1: You're right, I didn't. You're a pretty recognizable guy. And
- 25:50Speaker 1: can you even go to dinner now and without people
- 25:52Speaker 1: coming up and being like, hey, Paul Findbaum, can I
- 25:53Speaker 1: get a picture? Can I? That's got to happen everywhere. Well,
- 25:57Speaker 1: it's the farther south I go, the more divil culture is. Um,
- 26:01Speaker 1: so it's not like, uh, you know, I mean I
- 26:03Speaker 1: could go to a dinner in Minneapolis and I don't
- 26:05Speaker 1: think anybody would notice. But but Birmingham or Atlanta. But hey,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I mean I'm at the point in life where I
- 26:13Speaker 1: where I'm where I'm looking at the people that come
- 26:15Speaker 1: up to me and go like, where were you? When
- 26:17Speaker 1: it matters? I mean, I mean, you know, I'm in
- 26:21Speaker 1: my mid sixties, I've been married, thirty three years. I mean,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I I mean, I am I laugh at all this stuff.
- 26:26Speaker 1: When you know, when the home coming queen at old
- 26:28Speaker 1: miss comes over and says, can I get a picture
- 26:30Speaker 1: for Instagram? I just say, okay, can I If I
- 26:33Speaker 1: could have if that could have happened thirty five forty
- 26:36Speaker 1: years ago, and I could have sent it to all
- 26:37Speaker 1: my buddies back in high school. But what good does
- 26:39Speaker 1: it do me? Now? You say, what's Instagram? That's what
- 26:41Speaker 1: That's what you say, What's what's Instagram? Young Ladier? That's exactly, yeah, exactly. Okay,
- 26:45Speaker 1: We're gonna end on this. Nick Saban. Obviously you spend
- 26:48Speaker 1: time with him. I see you spend a time with him.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I see you with them. Like, what kind of like
- 26:52Speaker 1: human being is Nick Saban? Because again, all I get
- 26:55Speaker 1: is him being hilarious when not trying to be hilarious
- 27:00Speaker 1: press conferences, Uh, believe it or not. I'm working on
- 27:03Speaker 1: a book and he's he's a he's a big part
- 27:05Speaker 1: of the book. And I'm gonna try to explain the
- 27:06Speaker 1: psychology of Nick Saban. He he is not someone Bobby
- 27:10Speaker 1: that you want to grab and probably be entertained by. Uh,
- 27:15Speaker 1: but he he can be fun. And one thing about that,
- 27:17Speaker 1: you'll you'll appreciate the best conversations I've ever had with
- 27:21Speaker 1: Nick Saban. We're not about football, but about music. He's
- 27:25Speaker 1: a classic rock fan. Uh he is. Uh he he
- 27:30Speaker 1: told me once that and I can't remember it was
- 27:33Speaker 1: the Eagles, like it was an Eagles live album. Uh
- 27:37Speaker 1: in Japan. He told me. He said, yeah, I played
- 27:39Speaker 1: that over and over again like for for for six months.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I mean a little bit obsessive, Okay, Uh, I mean,
- 27:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think the Eagles are a good band,
- 27:46Speaker 1: but I'm not sure. I could only listen to a
- 27:49Speaker 1: hotel California. But that's him. He likes them. He's he's
- 27:53Speaker 1: gone to Rolling Stone concerts. He and Bill Belichick got
- 27:56Speaker 1: into uh that. I think they had uh bon jovic
- 28:00Speaker 1: Um hang out with them one weekend. So he's not
- 28:02Speaker 1: in the country, but he is. Uh. He is a
- 28:04Speaker 1: huge classic rock guy. So when you come to town
- 28:09Speaker 1: one evening, it would be awesome if we you and
- 28:11Speaker 1: I just went to dinner one night without all the
- 28:13Speaker 1: cameras and supporters you have to follow you all the
- 28:15Speaker 1: fame and glitz like you and I for like an
- 28:18Speaker 1: hour and a half talking life like, that's a dream
- 28:21Speaker 1: of mine. I would love at some point to make
- 28:23Speaker 1: that happen because you walked into there. Because I am
- 28:26Speaker 1: going to be a Nashville pretty soon. Let's go, Let's go.
- 28:29Speaker 1: If you're if you're in town, we're we will be
- 28:30Speaker 1: there for the Vanderbilt the Wake Forest game. Okay, that'd
- 28:35Speaker 1: be amazing. I'm a massive fan of you. I'm always
- 28:39Speaker 1: And here's the comparison I'm making you and I and
- 28:42Speaker 1: I'll let you go. You have a massive show to do.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Your a hero to all the world. Um. The comparison
- 28:46Speaker 1: is when I finished anything we're doing, if we do
- 28:49Speaker 1: like a twelve or third team in a break and
- 28:51Speaker 1: we're off the air, and you can tell him, what
- 28:53Speaker 1: do I do? As soon as I'm off the air
- 28:54Speaker 1: from being Mr Gregarious, Mr Mr Blind for the party?
- 28:57Speaker 1: What do I do? You walk out and go home?
- 28:59Speaker 1: Where I shut down? I don't. I don't have a
- 29:00Speaker 1: lot of energy. You want any time to have energy?
- 29:02Speaker 1: Like I go down and I'm like, all right, I
- 29:04Speaker 1: gotta figure out what's up next. I'm not. I'm not
- 29:06Speaker 1: the life of the party. When there ain't a mic
- 29:07Speaker 1: in front of me and I've done your show, even
- 29:11Speaker 1: in person, even here, when you set up the stage
- 29:13Speaker 1: and very similar you go, all right, I'm off. You know,
- 29:17Speaker 1: it's like your robot that shuts down. And I can
- 29:18Speaker 1: appreciate that, and I can admire that, and because you're
- 29:22Speaker 1: a weirdo like me, and I think that's why I
- 29:23Speaker 1: love you so much, Bob find Bom. Well, I appreciate
- 29:26Speaker 1: you saying that. And when I when I see it,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to sell you on getting me a
- 29:29Speaker 1: job in Nashville as a songwriter. Whatever did write a
- 29:32Speaker 1: country song about ten years ago? No, you didn't know
- 29:34Speaker 1: you did it. I did know you did it. Okay,
- 29:38Speaker 1: I'll bring it to you and I'm gonna go. I'm
- 29:39Speaker 1: gonna go to music Row or where whatever it's called
- 29:41Speaker 1: and try to sell it. Yeah it's not called music row,
- 29:44Speaker 1: but uh tell your friends you're gonna go down to
- 29:47Speaker 1: music Lane and ye music lane. Yeah all right, Paul, Hey,
- 29:50Speaker 1: thank you, and hopefully i'll see you soon. You're a hero,
- 29:53Speaker 1: and I'll i'll talk to you. I'm gonna tell your
- 29:55Speaker 1: guy and give them my cell phone number. If you
- 29:57Speaker 1: never text me, I understand you just you hate me.
- 29:59Speaker 1: But if you do, and you're like, let's go to dinner.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Let's go, and I will let you pay because I'm
- 30:03Speaker 1: that kind of nice guy. I would be delighted. And
- 30:06Speaker 1: this has been like of all the things I've ever
- 30:08Speaker 1: done in my career, stop, okay, stoping the most recent Okay,
- 30:12Speaker 1: thank you. That's more like there is Paul fine bomb everybody,
- 30:15Speaker 1: all right, Paul see every Buddy. Draft Kings sports Book,

- 31:33Speaker 1: I wanted to know for a business that runs does
- 31:35Speaker 1: he ever put those phones on silent? You know. Ian's
- 31:38Speaker 1: also had the privilege of covering Nick Saban and Bill
- 31:41Speaker 1: Belichick very close and personally during his and their careers,
- 31:45Speaker 1: so I wanted to talk about that that and much
- 31:46Speaker 1: more right now with Ian rappaport Ian, how are you?
- 31:49Speaker 1: I'm great, How are you? Hey? Pretty good? I'm I'm
- 31:51Speaker 1: pumped to have you on. Is your phone ever on
- 31:53Speaker 1: silent I mean, being a guy that gets all this
- 31:55Speaker 1: information and you know you're one of the best, if
- 31:58Speaker 1: not the best, at your job. Is it ever on
- 32:00Speaker 1: island where you just go? I can't turn my phone on.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's a lot of times on silent um, but it's
- 32:04Speaker 1: always on vibrate, it's never off. And people always ask
- 32:08Speaker 1: me like, oh, man, like when can you turn your
- 32:10Speaker 1: phone off? And I'm like, it's actually more stressful to
- 32:14Speaker 1: turn my phone off. It really is. Because let's say
- 32:17Speaker 1: I'm on vacation and I'm in Hawaii, which I haven't
- 32:21Speaker 1: been to in like ten years. But let's just say
- 32:22Speaker 1: I'm in Hawaii and I'm on the beach and my
- 32:24Speaker 1: phone buzzes, like I can tweet something real fast and
- 32:29Speaker 1: be done with it. But what's way more stressful is
- 32:32Speaker 1: turning my phone off and being like, I don't know
- 32:36Speaker 1: what came like it would be anything like if I
- 32:39Speaker 1: or if I'm on vacation and I get some news,
- 32:41Speaker 1: I can call one of my colleagues and like, hey,
- 32:42Speaker 1: chase this down, but turn the phone off. Like that's
- 32:45Speaker 1: just stress, man. And I'm trying. This job is stressful enough.
- 32:48Speaker 1: I'm trying everything I can to sort of alleviate some
- 32:51Speaker 1: of the stress. You go from being a guy in
- 32:53Speaker 1: New York, guy in East Coast to living in Starkville, Mississippi.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Is that a culture shock for you? Um? It was. Um,
- 33:02Speaker 1: I loved it. I really liked the South. And my
- 33:05Speaker 1: wife's from Mississippi. I met her there when I was
- 33:07Speaker 1: living in Starfield. She was a student Mississippi State. UM.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And I So when I took the job, I told
- 33:13Speaker 1: the editors I only took the job under the agreement
- 33:16Speaker 1: that I would live in the college town, which seems normal,
- 33:19Speaker 1: but at the time they never had that before. It
- 33:20Speaker 1: was a Jackson newspaper, Jackson Claren Ledger, so all the
- 33:24Speaker 1: writers lived in Jackson. Drove up two hours, reported and
- 33:26Speaker 1: drove back. I'm like, no, I want to be immersed
- 33:29Speaker 1: in this culture, this team. I want to live there. Uh.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And I did. And it was a small town. They
- 33:35Speaker 1: got like three bars and restaurants. Um. And like when
- 33:38Speaker 1: I'm waiting online for things, my turn is up. When
- 33:41Speaker 1: it's up, you know, like in New York, you're like,
- 33:44Speaker 1: come on, I got this, like bagel coming, you know,
- 33:47Speaker 1: like I got things too, like like four appointments, like
- 33:49Speaker 1: let's go in Mississippi, your turn is up. Whenever they
- 33:53Speaker 1: say it's up's almost I mean, it's just it's to tie.
- 33:57Speaker 1: The clock is different, you know. And Uh, it's like
- 34:02Speaker 1: people talk to you online and when they say, like,
- 34:06Speaker 1: you know, how you doing, they like actually want to know, right,
- 34:10Speaker 1: And they wave at you just driving what're going on?
- 34:12Speaker 1: In New York, what's going on is like what do
- 34:14Speaker 1: you want? In South, it's like what actually is happening?
- 34:18Speaker 1: So I think you used to just like talking to
- 34:19Speaker 1: random people that I didn't know. Um, I loved it though.
- 34:23Speaker 1: The food is great, people are awesome. UM. I lived
- 34:26Speaker 1: in the South five years of Starkville in Tuscaloosa. UM,
- 34:29Speaker 1: and I would, you know, for the right situation, I
- 34:32Speaker 1: would definitely move back. I want to talk about Tuscaloosa
- 34:34Speaker 1: for a second. And we have just a couple of
- 34:36Speaker 1: minutes left. But you covered Saban and Belichick separately. Uh.
- 34:41Speaker 1: A lot has been made of their friendship or their
- 34:43Speaker 1: professional friendship and some of both. But what can you
- 34:46Speaker 1: what are the similarities between those two working with them
- 34:48Speaker 1: separately independently, and then how are they different? Uh? Similarities? What?
- 34:54Speaker 1: Both of them are crazy because they could stand in
- 34:57Speaker 1: the field, stand on the sideline. A game goes by
- 35:01Speaker 1: with seventy players and you could ask them, both of them.
- 35:04Speaker 1: They both can do it about a specific player on
- 35:06Speaker 1: a specific play and just watching the game from the sidelines,
- 35:10Speaker 1: they can tell you what that player did. It is bonkers.
- 35:13Speaker 1: So you'll be like, uh, Nick, on that touchdown, you know,
- 35:16Speaker 1: the left tackle looked like he kinda like, oh yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 1: he got outside his guy, he pinned him in and
- 35:21Speaker 1: that sprung the run and you're like, god, how did
- 35:24Speaker 1: you see that? But they both can do it so
- 35:26Speaker 1: football wise, and it's it's wild because they can tell
- 35:29Speaker 1: you what everyone did on a certain player, what they're
- 35:31Speaker 1: supposed to do, what the player was before and after,
- 35:34Speaker 1: and what happened. It's like beyond crazy to me. Um
- 35:38Speaker 1: both of them are really good at explaining football to idiots,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and by that I mean reporters. Um So I like
- 35:44Speaker 1: like Belichick specifically, but say we would do too. But
- 35:47Speaker 1: Belichick specifically, if you ask him a football thing, who
- 35:50Speaker 1: really tell you like you will explain to you in
- 35:53Speaker 1: a way that is like palatable, which I always thought
- 35:56Speaker 1: was so cool. Um, they're different in that Bill is
- 35:59Speaker 1: the was disciplined person, really person that I've ever met.
- 36:04Speaker 1: He will go into a press conference and if he
- 36:06Speaker 1: doesn't want to say something, you're not getting it out
- 36:09Speaker 1: of him. Like he and I got along for a
- 36:10Speaker 1: lot of reasons. I think one of the reasons was
- 36:13Speaker 1: I knew I was never prying injury news from his lips.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Wasn't gonna happen. So if you don't want to say it,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I'd asked him. Once, I move on and we talked
- 36:20Speaker 1: about other stuff, because you can't force anyone to say anything.
- 36:24Speaker 1: With Saban, you kind of can. Um, you ask him
- 36:28Speaker 1: over and over and he'll lose discipline and he'll just
- 36:31Speaker 1: kind of say whatever. So I could go and do
- 36:33Speaker 1: a Belichick press conference and know what I'm getting, and
- 36:35Speaker 1: I would go into a Saving press conference and it
- 36:37Speaker 1: could literally be anything. It could be. I told you,
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'm not going to talk about that. What do you
- 36:42Speaker 1: want men to say? This guy got suspended and I'm
- 36:45Speaker 1: disciplining him here here and here and here' who we're
- 36:46Speaker 1: gonna replace him with? I'm not just gonna do that,
- 36:49Speaker 1: I know, but just so different there. Um, both are
- 36:55Speaker 1: just fascinating to cover and get to know. Which one
- 36:58Speaker 1: do you think you'd be better friends with in real
- 37:00Speaker 1: life if it was just friendship? Um? Probably Belichick because
- 37:05Speaker 1: he can turn it off a little better. Like you know,
- 37:09Speaker 1: I like I'll run into Bill, like, say it the
- 37:12Speaker 1: combine or something, and I want to talk about football,
- 37:15Speaker 1: but instead we'll talking about horse racing for forty five minutes.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Like Saban doesn't really do that when he's business. Bill
- 37:21Speaker 1: kind of does. That's a little different. You guys follow
- 37:25Speaker 1: in at rap sheet on Twitter and Instagram and all

- 38:51Speaker 1: interview was again super cool, so much that I was
- 38:54Speaker 1: like geeking out before and after Rich Eyes and Man's
- 38:57Speaker 1: ESPN for you know, ever, when I was a it
- 39:00Speaker 1: over twenty years doing sports he has done at all.
- 39:04Speaker 1: He tells me the story about when he got the
- 39:05Speaker 1: call from ESPN that would change his life forever. Rich
- 39:08Speaker 1: also talks about the Run Rich Run campaign, which he
- 39:11Speaker 1: does for the NFL and for the Combine and for charity,
- 39:14Speaker 1: and it was just super cool to talk to Rich Eisen.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I hope you enjoyed this final interview. One of my
- 39:19Speaker 1: favorites from the year here is Rich Eisen. Massive fan
- 39:23Speaker 1: and have been for a whole long time. And I
- 39:24Speaker 1: watch you if I listen to your podcast. Each hour
- 39:27Speaker 1: is loaded separately, so I try to I'm a big fan.
- 39:29Speaker 1: If you can't tell I know all the nuances of
- 39:30Speaker 1: the Rich Eisen show, um, but I have the Roku
- 39:34Speaker 1: app that I can watch you guys on You've had
- 39:36Speaker 1: to transition a bit with all the new technologies. You know,
- 39:40Speaker 1: you have an eleven year old son too, does he
- 39:41Speaker 1: help you stay on what to what's what's called? And
- 39:47Speaker 1: uh and a nine and they are. It's amazing because
- 39:52Speaker 1: back when I was a kid, you know, back when
- 39:55Speaker 1: I was a kid, um, it would be what's on
- 39:59Speaker 1: channels two, four and seven? Right? Uh? Now they know
- 40:03Speaker 1: what's on an app and they get pissed at me
- 40:05Speaker 1: when I when I go to try and search for
- 40:08Speaker 1: anything on the old Roku device, they're like, Dad, that's
- 40:12Speaker 1: on Paramount plus, Dad that's on It's on Disney like
- 40:15Speaker 1: and they and and they say it with such scorn. Um.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I don't understand it, um, but that's you know, I
- 40:22Speaker 1: take it, I absorb it, and I try to get
- 40:24Speaker 1: better every day. That's why I have this sign on
- 40:25Speaker 1: my desk every day. I don't know if anybody's ever
- 40:28Speaker 1: gonna try to take this away from me, the best
- 40:30Speaker 1: at ever, but you know that's I'm in my hopefully
- 40:36Speaker 1: uh fourteenth consecutive year of that title run that I'm on.
- 40:39Speaker 1: I want to talk about getting the call, like the
- 40:41Speaker 1: big call, and you know, I just knowing your history,
- 40:44Speaker 1: you know, just being you know, a sports anchor and
- 40:47Speaker 1: reporterback at a local station, but moving up to ESPN
- 40:51Speaker 1: when you got the call that we want you at ESPN.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Where were you and what what was actually said on
- 40:55Speaker 1: the call? So I was in Redding, California, UM at
- 41:00Speaker 1: the ABC local affiliate k r c R Television, and
- 41:05Speaker 1: I sent a tape to a headhunter, UM three of
- 41:07Speaker 1: them across the United States. I was twenty five years
- 41:10Speaker 1: old this and I'm like, you know, I was there
- 41:14Speaker 1: for a year. I'm like, what does it matter, It's
- 41:16Speaker 1: just first class postage. I'll send these tapes out. So
- 41:19Speaker 1: the sender tapes out to a head hunter and I
- 41:23Speaker 1: get a phone call, uh at home from the head
- 41:27Speaker 1: hunter who says to me, I've got a very interesting
- 41:30Speaker 1: and interesting bite. A big time shop is interested in
- 41:33Speaker 1: more of your works than the best written material. Another
- 41:35Speaker 1: tape sent, another table, and then I go to work
- 41:39Speaker 1: one day and UM, it's a a phone where it
- 41:45Speaker 1: would ring once, one loud ring if it was a
- 41:47Speaker 1: local call, and a ring ring if it was outside
- 41:50Speaker 1: of the area code. I mean again, this is and
- 41:56Speaker 1: whenever it would ring ring, it would it would be
- 41:58Speaker 1: my parents or my brother because I'm from New York
- 42:01Speaker 1: City and they lived in New Jersey and my brother
- 42:02Speaker 1: was in southern California. So it never would. Ring ring
- 42:05Speaker 1: twice and ring ring, and I pick up the phone
- 42:09Speaker 1: and it was an agent named Henry Reich from the
- 42:12Speaker 1: William Mars Talent Agency, saying he wanted my real immediately
- 42:17Speaker 1: because I was the hottest up and coming sportscaster in
- 42:21Speaker 1: America according to him and what he had been hearing.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right, because I'm about to go
- 42:27Speaker 1: drive fifty miles into the Shasta Mountain Range to try
- 42:31Speaker 1: and cover a local high school volleyball game with my
- 42:34Speaker 1: three quarter inch camera connected with a coaxial cable to
- 42:37Speaker 1: the deck with a huge you know, uh strap over
- 42:41Speaker 1: my other shoulder, one man banning the whole thing, and
- 42:43Speaker 1: so um, I'm not feeling very hot. He goes send
- 42:47Speaker 1: me to tape. Great, hang up the phone, call my
- 42:49Speaker 1: brother up, and I'm like, you'll never guess what just happened.
- 42:51Speaker 1: I tell him. He goes get out of here, no Kiden.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, that's just tapping, hanging the phone up,
- 42:56Speaker 1: Ring ring, and another one and this isn't five minutes
- 43:01Speaker 1: of each other. And I'm like, watch, I am such hot.
- 43:04Speaker 1: That's ESPN on the phone, And sure enough it was
- 43:07Speaker 1: a guy named Al Jaffey from ESPN, their head hunter,
- 43:10Speaker 1: who I had sent multiple unsolicited tapes and resumes too
- 43:13Speaker 1: over the previous five year period, and it was him
- 43:17Speaker 1: telling me that he had gotten my tape. They really
- 43:20Speaker 1: like it and they want to set up an interview
- 43:22Speaker 1: in an audition. And I thought it was my brother
- 43:24Speaker 1: telling all of my friends back home call Rich say
- 43:27Speaker 1: you're Al Jaffee sending all that, and I thought it
- 43:30Speaker 1: was all my friends trying to mother, you know, and
- 43:33Speaker 1: um it was not. It was the real deal guy.
- 43:35Speaker 1: And I almost cursed him out, thinking it was a friend,
- 43:38Speaker 1: like who are you? But it was really him and UM.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I flew down to Los Angeles a few weeks later
- 43:44Speaker 1: to UH to interview UM I did with a whole
- 43:48Speaker 1: bunch of executives that were there for the Cable Ace Awards,
- 43:51Speaker 1: which no longer exist. And then a few weeks later
- 43:54Speaker 1: I auditioned for the gig um on a Monday after
- 43:59Speaker 1: by the way, a snowstorm prevented me from getting halfway
- 44:02Speaker 1: across the country in the initial time of auditioning, so
- 44:06Speaker 1: it was a long wait, a lot of ups and downs,
- 44:09Speaker 1: but I got the gig after auditioning with Al Jaffee
- 44:12Speaker 1: And that's my story. Did you ever have imposter syndrome
- 44:15Speaker 1: or at any time do you have impostor syndrome while
- 44:17Speaker 1: you were there, especially the early days. What do you
- 44:19Speaker 1: mean like you're like, Okay, I'm probably not at the level.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Do they think I am. I'm about to do this
- 44:23Speaker 1: and I'm not really that good? Oh? My first sports
- 44:26Speaker 1: Center was with Larry Beale was the Sports Center anchor.
- 44:30Speaker 1: He's now out in uh northern California, And um it
- 44:34Speaker 1: was this is before ESPN News, so I was the
- 44:38Speaker 1: last guy that they hired that they threw directly on
- 44:40Speaker 1: Sports Center and um so ESPN News what they would
- 44:45Speaker 1: put guys and gals on to get their teeth cut
- 44:49Speaker 1: and get up to speed. So, um I I just
- 44:52Speaker 1: remember it was a half hour sports center in the
- 44:55Speaker 1: on the on the round of thirty two day I believe,
- 44:58Speaker 1: or it was a sweet sixteen was the all of March,
- 45:01Speaker 1: so it's probably a round of thirty two day and
- 45:04Speaker 1: we I had eleven highlights that had only seen one
- 45:06Speaker 1: of them. So they were gonna hand me ten paperwork
- 45:09Speaker 1: shot sheets with it where you could follow along what's
- 45:12Speaker 1: written there, uh to to know what the highlights were um,
- 45:16Speaker 1: and I would have to add lib the whole damn thing.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And I remember walking downstairs and saying to myself, I
- 45:21Speaker 1: have two choices. I can either pee down my leg
- 45:23Speaker 1: or I could just suck it up and say I'm
- 45:24Speaker 1: ready for this. And I think I did both, um,
- 45:28Speaker 1: And it was wild um. And I just looked around
- 45:33Speaker 1: and the people that were in the news room where
- 45:37Speaker 1: all the anchors who I had emulated or wanted to emulate,
- 45:41Speaker 1: or had watched for years and what made me want
- 45:43Speaker 1: to be a SportsCenter anchor, And they were automatically my colleagues,
- 45:47Speaker 1: and um, it was overwhelming, no question about it. Keith
- 45:50Speaker 1: Olberman and Dan Patrick and Kilbourne and you know, Robin
- 45:55Speaker 1: Roberts and Dave you know, uh, Charlie Starner, Bob Lee.
- 45:58Speaker 1: I mean, my god, these are all the people that
- 46:00Speaker 1: I was now colleagues with. It was overwhelming, but you know,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I was aged six, Um, but it's time in my
- 46:08Speaker 1: life seven years met my wife there. My children are
- 46:10Speaker 1: ESPN babies because of that. Technically and unbelievable, what a run.
- 46:15Speaker 1: I watch a lot of your your work with the Draft,
- 46:18Speaker 1: and I wonder what people being a big fan of
- 46:21Speaker 1: you people admiring what you do do you sometimes get
- 46:24Speaker 1: a lot of inside information that you can't share. Like
- 46:27Speaker 1: there's a fine line of things you know and things
- 46:28Speaker 1: you can actually say. Yeah, I mean yeah, but I
- 46:32Speaker 1: I mean I don't think I'm I do this thing
- 46:35Speaker 1: to break news, you know. And I say that having
- 46:38Speaker 1: a journalism degree from Northwestern, I know that that that
- 46:42Speaker 1: that's not something you want to say. I think I'm
- 46:44Speaker 1: I'm here to just kind of guide everyone through what
- 46:48Speaker 1: I'm hearing and understand what I can say what I
- 46:51Speaker 1: don't say. You know, I'm not schefter, I mud Ian Rappaport,
- 46:54Speaker 1: my colleague at the NFL network, That's not That's not
- 46:56Speaker 1: what I'm doing. If I hear something that can break something,
- 46:59Speaker 1: I will do that. But um, you know a great
- 47:03Speaker 1: for instance, is it prior to the draft? All I
- 47:06Speaker 1: heard this is the draft in Dallas that it went
- 47:08Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield and Sam Donald, Josh Allen, uh, Josh Rosen
- 47:13Speaker 1: and then Lamar Jackson was the last quarterback. That was
- 47:15Speaker 1: the quarterback draft of We had heard quite a bit
- 47:19Speaker 1: on this show, um from people who we spoke to
- 47:22Speaker 1: off camera and what I heard at the combine leading up.
- 47:25Speaker 1: We heard a lot that Russell Wilson was in play.
- 47:28Speaker 1: We're like, you get out of here, like what the hell?
- 47:30Speaker 1: Um really? And um, you know, we didn't say anything,
- 47:35Speaker 1: which is good because Russell didn't get traded. But now
- 47:39Speaker 1: we found out literally in the week before his home
- 47:42Speaker 1: opener in Seattle, as a member of the Broncos, he
- 47:45Speaker 1: let it be known that they did try to trade
- 47:47Speaker 1: him trade him prior to So what we heard was
- 47:50Speaker 1: actually accurate. But had we said it, we would have
- 47:53Speaker 1: created this huge stir um or or I shouldn't say that.
- 47:59Speaker 1: What I say it's a huge stir I shouldn't say that.
- 48:02Speaker 1: I would just say that we would have definitely put
- 48:04Speaker 1: something out there that might have gained attention potentially significantly,
- 48:08Speaker 1: that would have been inaccurate, even though it was accurate. Um,
- 48:12Speaker 1: And I don't like to traffic in those waters. I
- 48:15Speaker 1: would just prefer to kind of make you smarter by
- 48:18Speaker 1: by talking about the things that I think are going
- 48:21Speaker 1: to happen, not what I'm hearing could happen like that.
- 48:24Speaker 1: That is not what I like to traffic in. You've
- 48:26Speaker 1: been running that the forty for a bunch of years, now,
- 48:29Speaker 1: are you ever gonna hit a time where you're like,
- 48:30Speaker 1: all right, I gotta stop. If you had like a
- 48:32Speaker 1: seven seven seconds, are you gonna go like I need
- 48:34Speaker 1: to pass this down. Let my son do it now, No, Bobby.
- 48:37Speaker 1: If I if I need a walker, that's when I'll
- 48:39Speaker 1: stop and actual help you know, UM doing that. But
- 48:45Speaker 1: to be very um straightforward with you again, UM, yeah,
- 48:48Speaker 1: there is like at some point, UM, I don't think
- 48:51Speaker 1: people want to watch some guy run, you know, with
- 48:54Speaker 1: a limp and do something UM particularly bad. My wife
- 48:58Speaker 1: wants me to train for it. Um, and UM, I
- 49:02Speaker 1: don't know. I mean I go back and forth like
- 49:04Speaker 1: should I really really train for it? Like it was
- 49:07Speaker 1: sort of like an everyman approach where just like it's
- 49:10Speaker 1: just anybody coming off the couch and running it. But
- 49:12Speaker 1: now maybe UM as again fifty three, perhaps me training
- 49:17Speaker 1: for it could be UM could be uh uh I
- 49:22Speaker 1: guess an example to people who are advancing UM to
- 49:27Speaker 1: stay in shape. And maybe that's another aspect of it
- 49:30Speaker 1: that I need to focus on because the reason why
- 49:32Speaker 1: I do it now and don't want to give it
- 49:35Speaker 1: up is because of the fundraising aspect for St. Jude
- 49:37Speaker 1: Children's Research Hospital. Um. But it has been you know,
- 49:42Speaker 1: amazing it's the as you can see here the logo
- 49:45Speaker 1: of my show and what so many people do associate
- 49:48Speaker 1: me with. And it was born, like many things in television,
- 49:52Speaker 1: out of complete boredom waiting to shoot television show. As
- 49:56Speaker 1: I was sitting next to Terrell Davis under the buzz
- 49:58Speaker 1: of the old r C a him which got blown
- 50:00Speaker 1: to Smith of reens for the new stadium in Indianapolis,
- 50:03Speaker 1: where he said, Uh, I said, how fast do you
- 50:05Speaker 1: think I can run the forty? He laughed at me.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I cursed at him and went down and ran it.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Had no idea that the NFL network crew on a
- 50:13Speaker 1: break was actually recording it. They played it back as
- 50:17Speaker 1: a surprise to me on live TV and it kind
- 50:19Speaker 1: of got a life in the zone that still lives today. Well, Rich,
- 50:22Speaker 1: I appreciate the time. I'm a big fan, like again,
- 50:25Speaker 1: and if you guys have Roku or Roku channel, which
- 50:28Speaker 1: I have the Roku app and I'm able to catch
- 50:30Speaker 1: Rich on a listen listening on podcast as well. Uh.
- 50:32Speaker 1: One of the interviews that I really enjoyed was when
- 50:35Speaker 1: you talk to the guys that do the town halls,
- 50:37Speaker 1: the Chad Kroeger, the you know when you went and
- 50:40Speaker 1: you were like, hey, because they go into these town
- 50:42Speaker 1: hall meetings and like propose water towers named after Britney Spear. Like,
- 50:46Speaker 1: I thought that was such a funny interview. And I'll
- 50:48Speaker 1: end with this, because you are interviewing celebrities and athletes,
- 50:52Speaker 1: have you had to change your style or research a
- 50:54Speaker 1: bit more because your interviews are a bit different now? Well,
- 50:57Speaker 1: you know, I've got a great um for auction team
- 51:00Speaker 1: that that's stuck with me and this show through the
- 51:04Speaker 1: pandemic and through many different partners. Hopefully the Roku Journal's
- 51:08Speaker 1: the last switch that I make. UM, and I appreciate
- 51:11Speaker 1: that you you got a Roku device just to keep watching.
- 51:15Speaker 1: That's pretty cool. But we we we dig in to
- 51:19Speaker 1: see if there is a celebrity sports cross section, because
- 51:23Speaker 1: that's the idea of this show is, you know, uh,
- 51:27Speaker 1: that sports is a touchdown of pop culture just as
- 51:31Speaker 1: much as movies and television. Um, the greatest sporting event
- 51:35Speaker 1: that the that the American sports scene puts on and exports,
- 51:40Speaker 1: the Super Bowl is stopped in the middle for a
- 51:42Speaker 1: rock concert and nobody bats an eyelash anymore. So it
- 51:46Speaker 1: really is something that I love to put together and
- 51:50Speaker 1: I'm thrilled that the folks at Roku and the Roku
- 51:52Speaker 1: channel are into it too. So whenever celebrity comes on,
- 51:56Speaker 1: we see, you know, did they play sports or if
- 51:59Speaker 1: they're a die hard fan of the team, happy to
- 52:01Speaker 1: dive in and let them be a pundit um and
- 52:05Speaker 1: and give opinions, because I think when a celebrity who's
- 52:09Speaker 1: into that uh comes in to promote his or her
- 52:13Speaker 1: movie or television show or music or album, they prefer
- 52:17Speaker 1: to talk about that rather than the funny story from
- 52:20Speaker 1: their vacation. Um. And then there are some celebrities who
- 52:23Speaker 1: don't know sports very well and are deathly afraid that
- 52:27Speaker 1: if they come on it'll be like if you saw
- 52:31Speaker 1: the movie Diner, where um, you know, one of the
- 52:33Speaker 1: characters won't get married to his fiance unless she passes
- 52:36Speaker 1: a quiz on the Baltimore Cult successfully. They feel like
- 52:39Speaker 1: that's what I'm going to do with them or to them,
- 52:43Speaker 1: which is the worst thing for a host to do.
- 52:45Speaker 1: So I try to make it comfortable and just talk
- 52:47Speaker 1: about their movie or TV history and um. So we've
- 52:52Speaker 1: got to, as I said, a terrific crew that we
- 52:55Speaker 1: put together here and we all, you know, I think
- 52:57Speaker 1: really like each other. Um that we we come with
- 53:00Speaker 1: a segment called Celebrity True or False where we just
- 53:02Speaker 1: go through their history about well, this story was on
- 53:05Speaker 1: the internet, this story was on your IMDb page? Is
- 53:08Speaker 1: it true or false about your TV show or you
- 53:10Speaker 1: about your your your movies. And it's just a great
- 53:14Speaker 1: way and fans eat it up, thank goodness. I mean,
- 53:16Speaker 1: we had Henry Winkler on the other month and we
- 53:20Speaker 1: talked to about Jump the Shark. UM. We had um,
- 53:24Speaker 1: you know, Gerald McCraney here the other day. UM, from
- 53:28Speaker 1: so many terrific shows. We asked them about Major Dad.
- 53:31Speaker 1: And that's what I love to do, just having people
- 53:34Speaker 1: from across the pop culture landscape talk about their movies
- 53:36Speaker 1: and TV. So yes, my long winded answer is yes,
- 53:39Speaker 1: there is a lot more research that goes into it,
- 53:42Speaker 1: but you put up a production constructor to place it in.
- 53:45Speaker 1: And not only is it um something enjoyable to watch
- 53:49Speaker 1: and listen to live, it's very consumable on an on
- 53:52Speaker 1: demand podcast or YouTube or YouTube page. UM YouTube dot com.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Slash Rich Eyes and Show has twenty eight thousand video
- 54:00Speaker 1: u from our near eight year history on it. And
- 54:03Speaker 1: so yeah, I do love having celebrities on and and
- 54:07Speaker 1: and it does require a little bit more help. Certainly,
- 54:10Speaker 1: if you mentioned Chat and t J, they come on
- 54:12Speaker 1: and drop the word paraneum for the first time in
- 54:15Speaker 1: my show's history. Listen, big fan you guys follow at
- 54:19Speaker 1: Rich Eisen at Rich Eyes and show Roku uh As
- 54:23Speaker 1: as you say, now you'll be announcing a serious channel
- 54:25Speaker 1: really soon, Radio Like I'm a total fanboy, you know.
- 54:28Speaker 1: I'll admit it now that it's over, and I've admitted
- 54:30Speaker 1: it six times during But just keep doing it and
- 54:33Speaker 1: I'll be listening every day and hopefully I'll meet you
- 54:35Speaker 1: in real life sometime soon. Rich. Thanks a lot. When
- 54:37Speaker 1: you're back here in Los Angeles after waking up at
