- 0:06Speaker 1: It's happening, and it's happening tonight.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to the Happy Families podcast, Real parenting
- 0:11Speaker 2: Solutions every day in Australia's most downloaded parenting podcasts. We
- 0:14Speaker 2: are Justin and Kylie Colson, except the solutions and not
- 0:17Speaker 2: on the podcast today. They're on the TV tonight nine
- 0:21Speaker 2: and nine. Now Monday June thirty, seven thirty pm. Our
- 0:27Speaker 2: kids are growing up in the world we never imagine.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Take a breath.
- 0:34Speaker 2: This is confronting content. It is tonight seven thirty pm.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Parental Guidance Season three kicks off.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I'm so excited. I'm so excited, Kylie.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Our kids are pretty excited too.
- 0:50Speaker 2: We're having a big party in the backyard. We've told
- 0:52Speaker 2: everyone to bring their parkers. They're doingers whatever. We've hooked
- 0:54Speaker 2: up the TV. We've got on the standoutside. We're just
- 0:56Speaker 2: hoping that the weather will be good and we're going
- 0:59Speaker 2: to sit there and watch Ali Langdon and myself talk
- 1:02Speaker 2: about some of the biggest topics that are haunting challenging
- 1:05Speaker 2: parents today for Parental Guidance, a limited series four episodes
- 1:10Speaker 2: over four big nights on Channel nine. Can you tell
- 1:14Speaker 2: that I'm excited about this? I'm so bummed.
- 1:18Speaker 3: So, if you haven't watched season one or two, can
- 1:21Speaker 3: you give us a brief synopsis of what the show's
- 1:24Speaker 3: actually about?
- 1:25Speaker 2: Okay, so a quick explainer today's podcast. We're just going
- 1:28Speaker 2: to give you a preview of tonight and parental guidance. Generally,
- 1:33Speaker 2: I don't know what questions Kyle's got for me. I'm
- 1:35Speaker 2: just going to answer them. So the quick explainer is
- 1:37Speaker 2: as follows. The last two seasons, we've got a bunch
- 1:39Speaker 2: of families who have been willing to do a whole
- 1:41Speaker 2: lot of challenges. Then we sit in the studio and
- 1:43Speaker 2: watch them as they participate in those challenges. They've already
- 1:48Speaker 2: been done. We're just watching the recordings of the challenges,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and then everybody passes non judgmental judgment on what they're doing.
- 1:54Speaker 2: In other words, they make comments to say, but why
- 1:56Speaker 2: are you doing that? Or this is an issue for me,
- 1:59Speaker 2: or genuine conversation is about parenting challenges like when the
- 2:03Speaker 2: kids are anxious, or what to do about screens, or
- 2:06Speaker 2: bullying issues and so on. Really compelling stuff.
- 2:09Speaker 3: So reality TV, yes.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But non exploitative reality TV. Why because we've got parents
- 2:15Speaker 2: and families, there's children involved, here, and we need to
- 2:17Speaker 2: honor them in a way that too many reality TV
- 2:21Speaker 2: shows don't honor bear contestants and participants.
- 2:24Speaker 3: So, if you've seen the trailer, the trailer is mind blowing.
- 2:28Speaker 3: In an Allie Langdon's words, we're diving into the biggest
- 2:33Speaker 3: parenting mind fields. Yet, how does it compare to the
- 2:36Speaker 3: first two seasons.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well, I haven't seen the whole thing yet. I mean,
- 2:39Speaker 2: it's on TV tonight. I've seen some snippets. I think
- 2:41Speaker 2: that it's the best we've ever done. And I'm not
- 2:43Speaker 2: saying that because I want people to watch it. Like
- 2:44Speaker 2: I the first season, we had no idea what we
- 2:46Speaker 2: were doing. We were the first people in the world
- 2:48Speaker 2: to run this show. We developed it ourselves. Well, actually
- 2:50Speaker 2: the production team did. I was just the parenting experts
- 2:53Speaker 2: sitting on the couch, But I didn't know what to do.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'd never been on a TV show before. Ali didn't
- 2:56Speaker 2: really know what she was doing. There was so much
- 2:58Speaker 2: guesswork in season one. In season two we felt like
- 3:01Speaker 2: we really knew what we were doing, and I think
- 3:04Speaker 2: it was a really solid season. But this time we
- 3:07Speaker 2: just sort of it was like putting on a favorite
- 3:10Speaker 2: sloppy Joe. We sat on the couch and we were like,
- 3:13Speaker 2: here we go. This is going to be great. And
- 3:15Speaker 2: we've shifted at this time so that there's no competition.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It's not like we're looking for a winner. We've just
- 3:20Speaker 2: got eight really great families who are willing to vulnerably
- 3:24Speaker 2: put themselves out there in front of the nation to
- 3:28Speaker 2: have their parenting.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Go out of the microscope literally critique. Yeah, so that
- 3:32Speaker 1: we can.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Work out how we can deal with many of the
- 3:35Speaker 2: issues that so many parents are really struggling with today.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So hit me with your questions. What do you want
- 3:46Speaker 2: to know? Obviously I can't give any spoilers, but I
- 3:49Speaker 2: can tell you heaps about the show, and that's what
- 3:52Speaker 2: today's podcast is about. To get everyone amped for how
- 3:54Speaker 2: good it's going to be.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Well, I'm really curious because as the show's parenting experts,
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm wondering from the outset, what is the biggest take
- 4:04Speaker 3: home you want parents to take away from this?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Oh.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So, I mean I've been doing a lot of media
- 4:10Speaker 2: over the last couple of weeks about the show, and
- 4:12Speaker 2: this is going to sound like something that we talk
- 4:14Speaker 2: about on the podcast all the time. The challenges that
- 4:17Speaker 2: parents face today, I think are some of the most
- 4:19Speaker 2: challenging that we've ever faced, if not the most challenging
- 4:21Speaker 2: that parents have ever faced, unless you're talking about existential threats.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Okay, so a country has gone.
- 4:25Speaker 2: To war or something like that, but I'm talking about
- 4:27Speaker 2: in peacetime, as families just navigate the daily grind of
- 4:31Speaker 2: raising children. The stuff that we're dealing with today is unprecedented.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The body image challenges, the screen time issues, things like bullying,
- 4:40Speaker 2: mental health, like we've got lower levels of resilience and
- 4:44Speaker 2: poorer levels of mental health in this country among our
- 4:46Speaker 2: young people than we've ever had before. And so the
- 4:50Speaker 2: topics are really heavy. But the one massive take home
- 4:53Speaker 2: that I want parents to really take from this is
- 4:55Speaker 2: that there's a way through. Like this is a hopeful show.
- 4:58Speaker 2: We see one full redeeming conversations.
- 5:02Speaker 1: There is hope, We hope builders.
- 5:05Speaker 2: As parents, we need to believe in a positive future
- 5:07Speaker 2: for our kids, and I think this show gives us
- 5:10Speaker 2: the tools and the keys that we need to get there.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Did you have a favorite couple a favorite family?
- 5:16Speaker 2: I really enjoy every family for different reasons, and as
- 5:20Speaker 2: I've watched the snippets, I keep on I'm just cracking up.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I'm looking at this family on the screen, I'm going
- 5:24Speaker 2: I love that about them, or oh, this is going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to be a really sore point for these guys, and
- 5:29Speaker 2: I hope they come through it well because they are
- 5:30Speaker 2: a great family. So every single time, I mean, no
- 5:34Speaker 2: family shines all the way through. That's not how the
- 5:38Speaker 2: show is designed. It is designed to poke holes. It's
- 5:42Speaker 2: designed to have us asking hard questions, and therefore every
- 5:47Speaker 2: family will have a moment where they squirm, but they'll
- 5:49Speaker 2: also have wonderfully redemptive moments where they absolutely shine as well.
- 5:53Speaker 2: We should be very careful not to feminize our males.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Oh so in season one and two, we had some
- 6:00Speaker 3: really creative parenting styles. Yes, we had strict parents, we
- 6:04Speaker 3: had free range parents, we had homeschooling parents, we had
- 6:06Speaker 3: the traveling parents. Like, we've seen a lot of different
- 6:10Speaker 3: parenting styles.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Major parents, tiger parents, helicopter parents, we've had them all.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah, so how does this season compare? What kind of
- 6:16Speaker 3: parenting are we going to see?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Okay, so there are eight different parenting styles. We've got
- 6:21Speaker 2: traditional parents, So Nathan and Joanne have a fairly traditionalist view.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Traditional roles for mum and dad they've got a strong
- 6:28Speaker 2: Christian background. Protect parents, protect parents, Courtney and John. They're
- 6:33Speaker 2: big on screens. They social media influences and work in
- 6:37Speaker 2: tech respectively. For Courtney and John, active parents, aiming Mark.
- 6:41Speaker 2: They're big on the kids being outside and staying away
- 6:44Speaker 2: from screens. The upfront parents. I just I love these guys, seriously,
- 6:49Speaker 2: they are so much fun. I said before, I don't
- 6:52Speaker 2: have any favorites, and I don't, but I just really
- 6:54Speaker 2: really enjoyed Mark and Tammy in the way that they
- 6:57Speaker 2: I just love the way they showed up on TV.
- 6:59Speaker 2: They were up for absolutely anything, and they are literally
- 7:02Speaker 2: upfront as in strong expectations, mutual respect. They just they
- 7:07Speaker 2: love their kids and you can see it. In addition
- 7:09Speaker 2: to that, we've got who else we got. We've got
- 7:12Speaker 2: authoritative parents, hard way parents, life school parents, and positivity parents.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Will be introduced to them over the next couple of weeks,
- 7:19Speaker 2: So I'm not gonna sort of labor all of those
- 7:23Speaker 2: now and talk them all up now, because we'll get
- 7:24Speaker 2: to see them over the next four weeks.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So the primary does a great job of helping us
- 7:29Speaker 3: see what's coming up.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, with the guy with the big big boys
- 7:35Speaker 2: over four powerful nights of event television.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I can't wait to see it all play out on
- 7:41Speaker 3: the big screen. But what are the big topics that
- 7:45Speaker 3: you're going to talk about and are there any specific
- 7:48Speaker 3: stories that you really want us to pay attention to.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so all of them, and all of them is
- 7:53Speaker 2: what I'm There are some really big topics and we're
- 7:56Speaker 2: going to do all of them, and the specific parts
- 7:58Speaker 2: I want you to see all of them.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Peer pressure, body image. Oh my goodness. The body image
- 8:05Speaker 1: episode is going to.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Break your heart. Oh my goodness, and it will also
- 8:10Speaker 2: be so inspiring. I'm getting weepy just thinking about it.
- 8:12Speaker 2: The mental health topic is really really carefully addressed, and
- 8:16Speaker 2: I think we do a good job with that.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Tonight it's screen time.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I don't know that there's a bigger topic that parents
- 8:22Speaker 2: are frustrated with at the moment.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Screen time. Screen time, screen time, And we're going.
- 8:28Speaker 2: To talk about AI, but specifically AI bots and the
- 8:32Speaker 2: AI friends that our kids are making. This thing is
- 8:34Speaker 2: going crazy at sweeping the world by storm, and there
- 8:38Speaker 2: are some really scary elements to it, So we're going
- 8:40Speaker 2: to talk about that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: That blew my mind.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Also, the conversation that we have around screens generally is
- 8:49Speaker 2: just so important. There's also some really important discussions around
- 8:53Speaker 2: education that unexpectedly came up, and I just think every
- 8:58Speaker 2: parent needs.
- 8:58Speaker 1: To hear it over all.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, it's such compelling TV. I can't wait
- 9:03Speaker 2: for Tonight seven thirty nine and nine now.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Just wanted to mention that again, so we'll wrap it
- 9:09Speaker 1: up there.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be our first of three review episodes where
- 9:12Speaker 2: we take a look at the big issues that arise
- 9:15Speaker 2: from this evening's episode. These podcasts reviews are going to
- 9:22Speaker 2: they don't miss it kind of stuff. So hopefully you'll
- 9:24Speaker 2: be able to get the time to jump on and
- 9:27Speaker 2: download the pod and have a listen each day as
- 9:29Speaker 2: we talk about the things that happen on Parental Guidance
- 9:32Speaker 2: on the previous Monday night Tonight nine Now and Channel nine.
- 9:37Speaker 2: If you can check it out live, that would be amazing.
- 9:39Speaker 2: If you're overseas, I'm so sorry at this point I
- 9:42Speaker 2: don't think you can see it, but we will play
- 9:44Speaker 2: as much as we can realistically in the pod to
- 9:47Speaker 2: create the conversations and fingers crossed. Sometime soon it may
- 9:51Speaker 2: be played in your country. Parental Guidance Season three Special
- 9:56Speaker 2: limited edition episode.
