- 0:07[SPEAKER_04]: Before we begin family, a quick heads up.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_04]: This story is a horror game and as such, it is full of things that might disturb your dreams, follow in your footsteps, and haunt your waking hours.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_04]: Please check the episode description for a full list of content warnings before proceeding.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_04]: Take care of yourselves, and thanks for listening.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_04]: For this mini series, we're playing a game called Liminal Horror, which is a rules-like survival horror game about normal, everyday folks caught up in terrifying situations.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_04]: And I just want to explain quickly a little bit about how this game works.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, exactly what happens when you hear a dice clatter on the table.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_04]: Our players have three main stats, strength, which is their physicality and toughness, the austerity, which is speed and precision, and control, which is their willpower and dealing with the weird and supernatural in this world.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_04]: When they are trying to attempt something risky, I'm going to ask them to roll a 20-sided die.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_04]: And to succeed, they have to roll equal to or under their stat number.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_04]: The lower the roll, the better.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: Of course, there are other mechanics, but that is the most important to know, going in.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_04]: There is a particular kind of magic hidden deep within the haulers of these mountains, the kind that only children can truly hear.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_04]: Down past the tangle of Rudodendron and ancient pines, far from the watchful eyes of weary parents and the sit of the cold camps, you found it.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_04]: Or rather, Adelaide found it, and she chose to invite you in.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_04]: But for those few fleeting months, it belonged to you.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_04]: You built your kingdom here.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: It was a fortress of fallen branches and scavenged timber, a sanctuary hidden from the awful truth, of the world outside.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_04]: And right in its heart, sat a weathered stone, carved by time and rain in the shape of a sitting rabbit.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_04]: It was your anchor, and in the sweltering heat of July beneath a canopy that filtered the sun into shards of light, you were invincible.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_04]: You were blood kin, tied not by birth, but by the mud on your boots, the carved letters in the tree bark, and the secrets you kept.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_04]: You swore nothing with tear you apart, and as we are in this moment, we are going to step
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: What do you guys do in here in the for at this time?
- 3:27[SPEAKER_03]: uh with a little short stick that he's swinging around wildly like a sword.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_03]: He's swiping at tall grasses and flower at Dandelion.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_03]: It's just popping the tops off of them and has an grand old time by himself as he's kind of dancing around this rock just swinging his
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: He would be collecting some very smooth rocks or very strangely shaped rocks and making a little bit of a collection for the group to throw into the pond and also he's looking for some bait for some fishing.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Some grubs, he swears if you can find the right little night crawler that you'll get the best fish of the summer.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna poke you in the back of my stick.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm guard.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: No backstabbing, W. D. goes and grabs a much smaller stick, and does a very poor imitation of a Musketeer's pose.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: All right, bring it on.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_02]: I, and a Musketeer, you, as a second Musketeer, we need a third.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: Who is, three of the magic number?
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's always three musketeers.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, right, right, right.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like the book in school.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like the book in school.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_03]: I'm Bob, you in the head, but then I'm a stick.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_04]: Ow!
- 5:09[SPEAKER_04]: And you see, Adelaide comes running through the floor as you hear her feet before you can see her.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_04]: And she, she's running and she looks a little sweaty, a little dirty and she's like wiping off some of the dirt off her forehead.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm sorry, am I late?
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: You're right on time.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, uh, what are you guys doing?
- 5:33[SPEAKER_03]: Where are the three musketeers?
- 5:38[SPEAKER_04]: Well, there's always three, though.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I was telling Seek.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: Well, W. She needs a sword then.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to find the rat one.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I can't be a musketeer because the book says it.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_04]: It's all boys.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_03]: See, she's a girl.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: We've got to follow rules of notebook.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I also don't have a sword.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: You see what I'm holding?
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little nub of a stick.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: OK. Any old stick I'll do.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_04]: OK, I got to find one bigger than W's.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_04]: And she goes to search for one.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_04]: And she comes back and she finds one that's bigger, but it's so heavy, so she's dragging it behind her.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_04]: I got it.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_04]: I found one.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: OK. What's she doing that, Adelaide?
- 6:33[SPEAKER_04]: I want three.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_03]: You can't even lift that thing.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_04]: I'm getting stronger.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_04]: I've been helping Mama move the potato sacks.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_04]: And she's struggling hard.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_04]: It's not even getting raised off the ground.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: Zika's trying hard not to laugh.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_03]: Zika, why don't you give her your sword now?
- 6:56[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's more, that's more her size.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: All right, all right.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: And Zika will wander over to Adelaide and be like,
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: I named this sword lucky.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: I've only had it for a little bit, but here you have it.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, okay.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_04]: Are you sure?
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, no problem.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: And Zico almost very easily picked up the larger stick and like slunk it over his shoulder.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_04]: She looked whoa.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, okay.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_04]: I'm ready.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_04]: So look up the turbination in her eyes.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_04]: She looks at you, W. On guard.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_03]: Flourish, my sword in front of me.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_04]: If this is a fight, do the death.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: To the death.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: to the whoop and people who says balance trying to swing the big stick and fall ass over tea kettle backwards.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: But he gets back up and like he does that thing that children do where they roll and they bounce back from falling down.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: He does he has that moment where he acts like he didn't just like scrape up his back in his arm.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I meant to do that.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's some.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: Secret technique.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and he picked those to pick up the big stick and it has broken in two So you're just holding two slightly large sticks.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_04]: He's just like Adelaide goes like whiskers to you, W Is there a technique about falling on your back?
- 8:25[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure what Zika's doing.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_03]: Um, I think it wants to rascals off.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_03]: That's what I think I'll throw down my second.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_03]: I'll just lunge that's easy
- 8:36[SPEAKER_04]: Be careful, you hear all to the side.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: We are anything but, I would say this feels like it pivots from three musketeers to professional wrestling, I think.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, eventually you guys are done wrestling and all that good stuff and Adelaide makes her way back to like the central area of the fort and she calls you both over.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, hey you guys.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_04]: I bought something while I was in town.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_04]: Come.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: All right, you win this time, W. I always win.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: I only tapped out because you were pulled twist in my toe.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: I know your weaks point, Zeke.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: The toe gets you every time.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Gosh, darn, spin and toe hold, and Zeke will get up and lumber over to Adelaide.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, you see, she's holding the little baggy, like the safe shape of like a size of like a sandwich bag, and it's full of these little paper, uh, bang snaps.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_04]: And she says, oh, I got these, um, I've been doing a lot of chores and I saved up, uh, 10 cents and I bought this.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_04]: It took me a while, but I finally got it.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_04]: I just seen like the other kids playing with it and it looks so much fun.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_04]: Like, like so much fun.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_04]: You guys want to try?
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do what?
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, money will spit, thank you.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, you, you.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_02]: How long did it take you to save all that up?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I've been saving all summer, actually.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, shoot.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: You want to share it with us?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_04]: Of course, you guys are my best friends.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, come on, dig in.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_04]: All right, I'm going to scramble and get my hand in that jars for Zika can I'm going to grab a handful of them and yeah, so they are they look those little paper being snapped so throw him on the ground here a little pop and you see going and it's just like that satisfying noise for some reason just like a little crack you guys continue to do it I'm I'm guessing Zika joins in oh yeah Zika eventually joins in.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_04]: That summer felt endless, until this day you were all gathered around that rabbit stone and throw in the little paper bang snaps against rocks, laughing as the sharp pop in the tiny little flashes of light.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_04]: Adelaide goes to throw one, and time seems to stop.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_04]: When that next one hits the dirt, the air doesn't just pop.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_04]: It seems like it's snaps.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_04]: And it's not a firecracker or collapse.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_04]: It's like a detonation goes off of pure black night.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_04]: And there is a deafening sound.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_04]: It sounds like a flashbang.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_04]: And you guys are thrown back as your body's hit the floor.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_04]: and I need you both to make a control save for me.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_03]: I know, 13 years old, that's actually not even 13.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_04]: Still got to make the save.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: That's a 313 for me.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: That is, that is a 14 over a 12 for me.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_04]: you will take a stunned condition.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_04]: So you are temporarily unable to move or react.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_04]: There is that the deafening sound in your ears, everybody's ears are ringing.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_04]: W-E, you're able to withstand.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_04]: So your mind is still intact.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_04]: But there is the stench of sulfur and like
- 12:55[SPEAKER_04]: is like slammed into your lungs.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_04]: You can smell it immediately.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_04]: And there is this shock wave of jagged, shadow, it swept over the clearing, like the world just darkens for a second.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_04]: And it's suffocating, it feels cold, like you just entered a temporary void.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_04]: And when the light finally comes back, the air is thick with smoke.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_04]: and that stone rabbit that was at the center completely gone.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_04]: It's reduced to like a crater of smoke and dust.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_04]: And you also see something else.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_04]: Adelaide is on the ground.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_04]: Still, and silent.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_04]: Both of you have seen death before in the smallest things and the larger things.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_04]: And so you know death when you see it, resting inside of your friend.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_03]: The first thing that we will do, as soon as he, the senses come back to him to bring him still in his ears, that the dust or whatever that was I was feeling in there.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_03]: This is in his lungs.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I like, actually, I'll call crawling over to her still body as quickly as I can.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: And it starts to shake her.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think Zika's very, because it being stunned, I think what happened was during the whiplash of the blowback, he hit his head against like a hard part of a stomp or something and
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: that you know that impact you get when you hit your head and like you the world blacks out for a moment.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's what happens as the his ears are ringing.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: He like he's literally dazed and it takes him so long to get up.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't even see where everyone is yet.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, well, dubious.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: And like what's going on?
- 15:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I think I'm bleeding and he is like very much has a very bad like gash at the top of his head and his bleeding down the side.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_04]: From your point of view, you just hear, it starts off, it sounds kind of muffled.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_04]: You hear him, she's like, she's saying Adelaide's name, but that's all you can't hear for right now.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_04]: W-E Adelaide is completely lifeless.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_04]: Eyes closed and you're shaking and nothing's happening.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_03]: Do I see any wounds on her as she, bleeding from anywhere?
- 15:38[SPEAKER_04]: You not see any visible wounds.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Seek, get over here, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole, asshole,
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: You try him, what's so you try to do when the train was there.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: She's not breathing.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: We got to make sure she's breathing.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Help her.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, my mom was a school nurse, but okay, as he is going to try to replicate CPR trying to get air in her lungs.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, I'm sorry.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like like presses into her chest trying to get the air in.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_04]: and her chest moves with the pressing, but there's nothing coming of it.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_04]: As we see her head like lulls to the side.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: What are you doing?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_04]: See?
- 16:50[SPEAKER_04]: It's not working.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: That was a canter.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we got to get water.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: We got water back at the fort.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: Um, she's gonna like look around to see like, did something hit her, did something like a tack her, like this looking around to see if there's anything different other than like the shattered stone, just to literally think of like grasping it anything that could help.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_04]: There's nothing around right now.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_04]: It looks like the regular forest in an area that you guys have always played in.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to run back to town, and I'm going to get some help.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_03]: Stay with Adley.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: Help me get rid of the fort at least.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: We'll wrap her up in the blanket, we can try to see if she'll take any water and keep her upright.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he'll like pick up her underneath her arms.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: I expect you to pick her up by her legs, and we'll try to like have casually bring her back to the fort.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'll do what I can to grab her ankles and bring her back to the fort,
- 17:57[SPEAKER_04]: Now what you guys both immediately notice as you're picking her up and if you're touching any, like, open parts of her skin, she is very cold and eventually you guys make it back to the fort.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like put her on like whatever like caught we may have made in there.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: Grab like one of the throw blank, it's wrap her around, put her head on top of a pill, like on top of a pillow, all right, I'll try the breathing thing again, but um, I don't know what's it, this is bad, she's not breathing, no, she's, why she's so cold, see, why she's, I mean, it's not even that cold out, but um, okay, I'm gonna try again, you're gonna have to
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: blow air into her mouth and I'll do the chest part because my arms are sharp.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is not the time to be shy.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_01]: All right, all right.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: Do I just blow?
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: You open your mouth and you blow air in.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then when you do that, I'm going to press the air so you can get her lungs like to work again.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: Hurry.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: Hurry.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: Hurry.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_00]: and Zequel, like, teeth, like, run this with WWE, like, of, like, doing the two men of, like, CPR.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: Try to see it, like, if maybe that's what will help, like, his, his little his arms pushing in and trying to get her to sort of reciprocate and breathe while, uh, WWE, like, offers the air to go into her lungs to see if that does anything.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_04]: as just there's nothing like a minute in this time feels like forever every second that passes and you're pushing and there's air getting blown into her and nothing.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_04]: What is seek feeling at this moment?
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: Ziggs Mama is a school nurse and he's never really seen her fail at anything and like this like these remedies always work so when this isn't working I think Ziggs starts to panic like W W we gonna do she needs it real doctor.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know
- 20:28[SPEAKER_03]: when the realizes that this is pointless in that ladle is not responding and it's dead and he'll look at Zik.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_03]: Terror in Zik's eyes, that just feeds his own fear and I scrabble back on my hands and like just pushing myself back away from you.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_03]: She ain't dead.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_03]: She's just, she's just fooling with us.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: She's not breathing, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't dead, she ain't
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: Wake up.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: Zeke's going to step outside and walk in a circle, just sort of panicking, trying to keep his breathing under control,
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: not just like it's a lot of panic of oh my god is my friend dead oh my god what's gonna happen are we in trouble what are we gonna say to our parents to her parents and all these rushing thoughts coming into this 12 year old turning 13 in two months year old uh fully freaking out just like looking out into the woods for anything that could offer guidance or help just
- 22:17[SPEAKER_04]: A few moments pass, and time just feels like it's stretching, and it's going so slowly.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_04]: And then suddenly, not too far from you, Zika.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_04]: You see a cotton tail, rabbit appears, and it hops, and it hops closer to you.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_04]: And as it gets closer, you notice this is no ordinary rabbit.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_04]: This seems to be rabbit rabbit.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_04]: You guys have both heard of this creature.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_04]: It's a famous bedtime story and for campfire horrors.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_04]: There is this living rabbit.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's small, big, flitted, big, eard.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_04]: and it's skin, looks like tattoos or markings of thousands of other rabbits on its skin.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_04]: And it gets closer to you.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: Zik yelps and scrambles back to the fort and like, and it's like, he can't find the words and he's just like pointing out the door and kind of like shutting the little door to their fort.
