- 0:00What if I told you there are people who know exactly
- 0:05Exactly how to turn you into an addict. Would you believe that? Is that even possible?
- 0:11Well, it really is back in the 70s
- 0:14There was a psychologist named Howard Moskowitz and he found something called the bliss point
- 0:21What's that?
- 0:22well
- 0:22he found with food if you get just the right texture and
- 0:27Mixture of salt and fat and sugar
- 0:31you can have these great big dopamine blasts these experiences of pleasure and
- 0:36You can have craving for more and more and it bypasses the experience of fullness
- 0:44Now imagine you're a snack manufacturer. You said oh my gosh. Tell us more about that
- 0:51That's what we want people who can't stop eating our
- 0:55Junk food
- 0:56Well, according to legend, he was a consultant for a very major snack manufacturer who spent ten million dollars
- 1:03Back when that was a lot of money
- 1:05In a couple of years to research the bliss point for a certain type of chip now
- 1:10I don't want to name names, but I will suggest
- 1:13That long ago there was a very famous comedian who eventually on this account became a very famous
- 1:22Talk show host and he would make his commercials for this particular type of chips
- 1:27And then he said something that was as insidious as it wasn't genius. It's a crunch all you want. We'll make more
- 1:36see that is the rallying cry of
- 1:39Every pusher of everyone who wants to exploit an addict you can have all you want
- 1:47Will make
- 1:49more so the problem was with this ultra processed snack chip was you had the bonus of whoa that tastes good you
- 1:57Had the craving more more more but you never had the bonus of that feeling of fullness of
- 2:05Satisfaction not to mention you didn't get much in the way of nutrition either now imagine
- 2:10You're in the world of CS Lewis and the screw tape later. It says famous
- 2:15Satirical manual for how demons tempt imagine the demons are looking at the bliss point
- 2:22That place where you crave more and never feel full. So, you know what?
- 2:27We had to do that
- 2:29not with chips, but with sex
- 2:33Is that even possible stay with me got a story to tell I'm Jesuit father Robert McCaig
- 2:38We're hosting every day at the Catholic current coming to you from the station of the cross Catholic Media Network
- 2:42Let's take a closer. Look glad you're here. You know that recently I've been doing an on-again off-again series
- 2:49Regarding the seven deadly sins. It's time that we talk about
- 2:53lust
- 2:55Lust is a sexual craving for something that God did not provide for now
- 3:02chastity is the universal obligation and really
- 3:06Liberation to live human sexuality according to your state in life
- 3:12we can talk about the details of that another time and
- 3:15When you want something outside of the bounds of what God had provided for you, that's lost now
- 3:21let's take that idea of the bliss point of
- 3:25Stimulating a desire for something that feels good that doesn't satisfy that generates
- 3:32dramatic craving and there is just
- 3:35never enough and
- 3:38all those pushers out there saying
- 3:41Crunch all you want will make more. So let's take that idea of lust which is
- 3:48really the
- 3:50unsatisfying sin
- 3:52Because you never get to the point of as they say in Latin
- 3:56Satisfaction a to be made full to be made complete. No one ever says. Oh, please couldn't possibly have more lust
- 4:02No, I'm full. Thank you. I've had my last quotient for the day
- 4:06You know Saturday's my cheat day
- 4:08But during the week can't
- 4:10It's not how people work now
- 4:13Imagine working at a formula for a lost addiction would how would you do it?
- 4:17Well, that's what pornography is especially electronic pornography
- 4:23Pornography is like those ultra processed snack foods with the bliss point
- 4:28There is the surge. There's the craving there's
- 4:33no fulfillment and
- 4:36There is an
- 4:38endless supply
- 4:40The attic never has to run out
- 4:43Now any priest will tell you that he's worked with a very many people who've tragically been involved with addiction
- 4:50young and old men and women sadly sadly and all these folks would tell you the same story that it leaves you in
- 4:58more pain with greater
- 5:01loneliness and
- 5:03Desolation and despair than before you started and yet they seem
- 5:09Not to be able to stop
- 5:12That's a tragedy and that is a really diabolical trick and I know
- 5:19That one of the ways the devil works against us
- 5:22His endgame is to have us betray the first commandment the primacy of God by manipulating us
- 5:29Through the sixth commandment through lust through sexual sin
- 5:33so if God forbid you are caught up in the pornography trap the pornography cycle of
- 5:39Addiction or someone you love is there is help. I'm going to recommend to you Steve Bacorni of
- 5:46freedom coaching
- 5:48It's a Catholic
- 5:49apostolate that has a great track record of
- 5:53getting people free from the chains of lust and the addiction that is fed by
- 5:59Pornography and if you want me to do some further reflections on the link between
- 6:05The devil wanting to destroy the first commandment by manipulating the sixth commandment
