- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome into Off The Bench. Ooh, you're scary. We're bringing
- 0:08Speaker 1: you the spookiest sports talk in town. With Jacob Hester.
- 0:14Speaker 2: And Matt Lynn.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Terrifying and terrible. Live from the.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Haunted Raising Cane's.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Studio, here's Jacob Hester and Matt Lynn.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Welcome back in OTB here on this Wednesday morning. Jake Flynn,
- 0:48Speaker 4: Alondra Tate, Wolfpack is here. And of course, it's Wednesday
- 0:51Speaker 4: at eight.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So Dr. Stephen Etheridge is here with us as well. Doc,
- 0:56Speaker 2: what's going on, brother? How we doing? We're doing great.
- 0:59Speaker 2: We got a couple of things in the chat for you.
- 1:01Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:03Speaker 4: This is from our guy, Dane. said he needs a
- 1:06Speaker 4: recommendation from Dr. Etheridge on a surgeon for Tommy John
- 1:09Speaker 4: surgery for his grandson. He injured his arm pitching in
- 1:13Speaker 4: the All-Star game in Florida this weekend.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Thomas John.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's never a good thing. Man, we got a
- 1:19Speaker 5: couple guys that do a really good job with that.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Dr.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Field does a great job with it.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Dr. Fury.
- 1:25Speaker 5: They're probably the ones that work mostly with our throwers.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 5: So I'd say either one of them, Matt Fury, Mark Field,
- 1:30Speaker 5: both great guys, both great surgeons. I would happily, if needed,
- 1:35Speaker 5: let them take care of my family.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So everybody's got their specialties. I don't think I've ever
- 1:39Speaker 2: asked you, what's your specialty? What do you figure? When
- 1:42Speaker 2: people come here, you've got to go see Dr.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Etheridge.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Oh, man. So I'm kind of all over the map.
- 1:46Speaker 2: You do a little bit of everything. I do, yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 5: So I'm kind of more of a generalist when it
- 1:49Speaker 5: comes to a lot of stuff. I guess if there's
- 1:50Speaker 5: one thing that I do that's a little bit unique
- 1:51Speaker 5: to the group, I do a lot of our biologic stuff,
- 1:54Speaker 5: the ERPs and the stem cells. I'm kind of our
- 1:56Speaker 5: guy for that and some of the specialized injections. We're
- 1:59Speaker 5: doing ultrasound guidance and things that are a little bit
- 2:02Speaker 5: more niche in that world. Uh, but if, you know,
- 2:04Speaker 5: if you've got to hurt pretty much anything, I I'll
- 2:06Speaker 5: do my best to get you to.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Say like when people are like, Hey, who's your doctor?
- 2:09Speaker 3: I'm like, Dr. Yeah. For what? Oh, for everything.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Everything. And then like I said, I've, I've got a
- 2:16Speaker 2: lot of good partners.
- 2:17Speaker 5: So if it is something that needs a little bit
- 2:18Speaker 5: more specialization, like a Tommy John injury, uh, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 5: if it's not something I can fix, we'll, we'll definitely
- 2:23Speaker 5: get you the right guys.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Um, Doug, do you think outside looking in, do you
- 2:29Speaker 6: think the new Orleans saints are hurt? Do you think
- 2:32Speaker 6: they're injured, just in general?
- 2:33Speaker 5: There's something wrong. You know, I think, I don't know
- 2:36Speaker 5: if it's pride that injured or if it's... Like if
- 2:37Speaker 5: the Saints was a person, what do you think they injured?
- 2:41Speaker 5: I don't know if we're allowed to say on the radio.
- 2:43Speaker 6: Do they have a concussion? Do they have a torn ACL?
- 2:46Speaker 6: Did their leg fall off?
- 2:48Speaker 5: It seems more of like an identity crisis.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Identity crisis, okay.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Maybe there's something there.
- 2:53Speaker 5: I think, you know, every time you feel like there's
- 2:57Speaker 5: a glimmer of hope, then they just kind of, yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Okay, all right. Kick you in the nether regions.
- 3:02Speaker 3: All right. Well, flaky.
- 3:03Speaker 2: All right, we got another question from Doc.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Ask Doc, does turning my head before coughing actually do anything,
- 3:10Speaker 4: or is it a courtesy thing?
- 3:11Speaker 3: It's a good question.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You know, you had somebody right next to you who
- 3:13Speaker 2: just did that. Courtesy. It's courtesy.
- 3:15Speaker 3: It's courtesy.
- 3:15Speaker 5: We don't want to get coughed on. It's actually not
- 3:18Speaker 5: about the procedure there, but it's, you know, I don't
- 3:22Speaker 5: want to get coughed on a hundred times when we're
- 3:24Speaker 5: doing a bunch of physicals.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so you didn't really do anything.
- 3:27Speaker 3: You tried.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It's courtesy. When you just had a hack there before
- 3:30Speaker 2: we came on air. I appreciate the courtesy.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You're welcome.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That was a good question. That was a legit question.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I enjoyed that. That's what he's asking for. Bye week
- 3:42Speaker 2: for LSU this week.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And so, got a couple guys that are trying to
- 3:47Speaker 4: get back on the field. A couple guys that could
- 3:49Speaker 4: take some time off because we're at that point in
- 3:52Speaker 4: the season and all of us know it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We've been there.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Before where you're beat up. No matter if you're healthy,
- 3:55Speaker 4: you're still beat up a little bit. So, Is every
- 3:58Speaker 4: bye week, since you've been in this field, is it
- 4:02Speaker 4: the same? Do you try to follow the same thing?
- 4:04Speaker 4: Is every team going to be different based off the
- 4:06Speaker 4: injuries that you have? How are bye weeks kind of–
- 4:09Speaker 4: like what's the game plan and how many different people
- 4:11Speaker 4: put the game plan together for a bye week as
- 4:14Speaker 4: far as health?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Yeah, so I guess it starts– there's a lot of similarities,
- 4:17Speaker 5: but it starts with your staff. Every coach is going
- 4:21Speaker 5: to be different. The way that Coach Miles did it
- 4:23Speaker 5: was different than the way that O did it. It
- 4:25Speaker 5: was different than the way that Kelly, different than the
- 4:26Speaker 5: way that Lane's doing it. So they're similar, but you're
- 4:29Speaker 5: going to have a slightly different schedule. And once we
- 4:31Speaker 5: kind of know the schedule, we have kind of a
- 4:33Speaker 5: template to work with. And then obviously there's going to
- 4:36Speaker 5: be some specifics to the year, to the season, to
- 4:38Speaker 5: the guys. What are the injuries we're dealing with? And
- 4:40Speaker 5: that's going to play into it. We try to kind
- 4:43Speaker 5: of marry the two, the schedule, what the coaches need
- 4:45Speaker 5: to get done, what they're trying to have done with
- 4:47Speaker 5: what we need to get done. And so it is
- 4:49Speaker 5: kind of a conjoined effort where we're all going to
- 4:51Speaker 5: talk about it. We use the term shared decision-making a
- 4:53Speaker 5: lot for a lot of different reasons. and and that's
- 4:56Speaker 5: really what goes into it you know we're gonna we're
- 4:57Speaker 5: gonna say okay this guy's got this injury and look
- 5:00Speaker 5: it can be anything from you know you've got a
- 5:02Speaker 5: guy that you've been putting off doing sometime even surgical
- 5:05Speaker 5: procedure and say hey let's go do that and we're
- 5:07Speaker 5: gonna do it as soon as our last game on
- 5:08Speaker 5: saturday to like hey let's do you know we mentioned
- 5:10Speaker 5: a minute ago these injections of these biologics maybe but
- 5:13Speaker 5: sometimes with some of those you want to got to
- 5:14Speaker 5: rest for two or three days after the shot you
- 5:16Speaker 5: know it's not always something where we say hey let's
- 5:17Speaker 5: do this or or just basically just rest a guy
- 5:20Speaker 5: you know this is a guy that yeah, the reps
- 5:22Speaker 5: might be helpful, but he needs the rest more than
- 5:24Speaker 5: the reps.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So it's, it's a little bit of all that.
- 5:26Speaker 6: Doc, what's one thing that you've seen and you've been
- 5:29Speaker 6: around like athletic trainers and different treatment variations besides like
- 5:35Speaker 6: the biologicals, like the stem cells besides that, like what,
- 5:39Speaker 6: like for, let's just say a soft tissue hamstring, like
- 5:42Speaker 6: what's one type of treatment that you've been like, man,
- 5:46Speaker 6: that really does. Cause I know there's a lot of,
- 5:49Speaker 6: The theory is, like, a lot of little things add
- 5:51Speaker 6: up to a big thing, right? But, like, is there
- 5:53Speaker 6: one thing that you're just like, man, this is one
- 5:55Speaker 6: thing that's, like, we have to do it because I've
- 5:57Speaker 6: seen it work time and time again?
- 5:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, well, for me, one of the first ones,
- 6:00Speaker 5: which maybe is not new anymore, but, you know, when
- 6:02Speaker 5: I was coming out of my fellowship, you know, I'd
- 6:06Speaker 5: never seen dry needling, for example, until I was in
- 6:08Speaker 5: my fellowship year. And different places in the country, that place,
- 6:11Speaker 5: some places weren't doing it and some places were. And
- 6:14Speaker 5: for me, that was a game changer. to do some
- 6:16Speaker 5: of the work on some of the soft tissue. Now
- 6:17Speaker 5: it's become more commonplace. I mean, this is, this has
- 6:19Speaker 5: been a while now. Um, but that was one that
- 6:22Speaker 5: for me was an eye opener, you know, currently, you know, we're,
- 6:26Speaker 5: I feel like we're getting pretty good results with some
- 6:28Speaker 5: of the red light treatments.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Maybe it's anecdotal. Maybe it's in my head.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I don't know that I'd say it's a complete game changer,
- 6:33Speaker 5: but that's kind of one of the newer things. And
- 6:35Speaker 5: I do think something to it, you know, I can't,
- 6:37Speaker 5: you know, you'll hear all these different, you know, it
- 6:39Speaker 5: helps us sell your level to help with all these
- 6:41Speaker 5: different things. And it tells you all this, which I
- 6:43Speaker 5: don't know how much of that's accurate and how much
- 6:44Speaker 5: of that is what it does. Um, but it does
- 6:47Speaker 5: seem to help. Um, you know, and then like, like
- 6:49Speaker 5: you mentioned, but I mean, yeah, a lot of the
- 6:50Speaker 5: injections that we're doing, you know, these are, some of
- 6:52Speaker 5: these are things we weren't doing when I first started and,
- 6:55Speaker 5: and they, they've definitely helped a lot with some of
- 6:57Speaker 5: the issues as well.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Like in the training room, it's a lot of, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 6: there's STEM, there's Hiva math, there's the red light, like
- 7:02Speaker 6: all of that stuff. And I, and I truly believe
- 7:05Speaker 6: like a lot of that, all that stuff helps with
- 7:07Speaker 6: the blood flow and helps like get your body's response
- 7:11Speaker 6: to healing, like get that going and kickstarted.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Um, but it's a slow process.
- 7:16Speaker 6: I mean, it's like, it's not like I'm going to,
- 7:17Speaker 6: it's going to fix you right now, but it all, like, again,
- 7:19Speaker 6: it's a lot of little things, but to your point,
- 7:22Speaker 6: when I, when I discovered dry needling, when I was playing,
- 7:25Speaker 6: it was like, what the hell?
- 7:28Speaker 3: Like, like, where was this my whole life? It's, it's
- 7:31Speaker 3: a cheat code, right?
- 7:32Speaker 6: It's like, to me, it's like, it's like 10 massage sessions,
- 7:36Speaker 6: like wrapped up.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Well, and I mentioned, you know, there's a, there's a
- 7:39Speaker 5: newer procedure. That's kind of a newer version of that,
- 7:41Speaker 5: that we do this called hydro dissections where we'll, especially
- 7:44Speaker 5: for hamstrings, using an ultrasound. And this is one of
- 7:46Speaker 5: those kind of specialized injections that I was talking about
- 7:48Speaker 5: that we do. And I'll find where the defect is
- 7:51Speaker 5: in the hamstring, where the scar tissue is, where the
- 7:53Speaker 5: inflammation is, and you can actually see it. And then
- 7:55Speaker 5: you go in with a needle and you kind of
- 7:56Speaker 5: break it up with a little bit of lidocaine and saline.
- 7:58Speaker 5: So it's kind of like dry needling, but you can
- 8:01Speaker 5: actually see what you're looking at, hit the spot, you
- 8:03Speaker 5: do a little bit more. And I will say that's
- 8:05Speaker 5: something for some of these soft tissues that's been pretty
- 8:07Speaker 5: helpful in some.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Scenarios as well.
- 8:08Speaker 4: If you do the PRP, which I think is a
- 8:10Speaker 4: big one too, that's not something that was available to us.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It never worked for me. It did for me. So
- 8:15Speaker 2: if you do that, how long until that can maybe
- 8:18Speaker 2: take effect? So most times PRP, you're looking at still
- 8:20Speaker 2: about two to six weeks now.
- 8:21Speaker 4: So that would be something like Sunday morning after last game.
- 8:26Speaker 2: We're trying to hit it early. Let's get it in.
- 8:27Speaker 5: And even if it may not help you for this
- 8:29Speaker 5: next Friday, Saturday, Sunday, maybe– you're, you're at least getting
- 8:33Speaker 5: it in now. And then maybe we'll see that benefit
- 8:35Speaker 5: in two or three weeks. So, so the PRP that's,
- 8:38Speaker 5: you know, and, and, and again, guys have had mixed results.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I do think it works.
- 8:41Speaker 5: You know, I've had better results doing some of the
- 8:42Speaker 5: newer ones, the stem cells and things like that, but,
- 8:45Speaker 5: but they do tend to work a little quicker, but
- 8:47Speaker 5: I think they all have a place, you.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Know, where did you, what kind of injury? Cause I,
- 8:51Speaker 3: cause I got knee. Yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Cause I use mine for elbow tendonitis and it did not,
- 8:55Speaker 6: it didn't do anything. Then I heard at that time,
- 8:58Speaker 6: like there wasn't a lot of successful results for people with.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Like elbow stuff.
- 9:02Speaker 4: But I mean, I know in some parts it's, it
- 9:04Speaker 4: wouldn't be doc if like Matt and I were taking
- 9:05Speaker 4: the same protein powder and it would help me and
- 9:08Speaker 4: hurt him or help him hurt me.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, isn't it?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Everybody's going to answer. It's hard to predict.
- 9:12Speaker 5: You know, that's, that's one thing with, you know, I've,
- 9:14Speaker 5: I've been doing some version of these biologic injections now
- 9:17Speaker 5: for almost 20 years.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Started doing PRP almost 20 years ago. Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 5: I've been doing stem cells, A2M cells, other ones for
- 9:21Speaker 5: about 10 years. So I've got a good bit of
- 9:24Speaker 5: experience over.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Literally thousands of injections now. And I still can't tell
- 9:28Speaker 5: you you're going to be the one you're not. You know, it's,
- 9:31Speaker 5: it's there, there's some conditions where I say, look, man,
- 9:33Speaker 5: your results aren't going to be likely. And others, I say, look,
- 9:35Speaker 5: this is a good condition to use this or whatever treatment.
- 9:38Speaker 5: But even then, that's one thing I have to tell
- 9:39Speaker 5: all my patients. I'm like, look, it's, it's still a
- 9:41Speaker 5: little bit of a roll of the dice. You know, it's,
- 9:43Speaker 5: it's some guys respond well, some don't. And maybe one
- 9:46Speaker 5: day we'll have a test that tells me, oh yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 5: you're the guy, but it's, it's, it's kind of a,
- 9:50Speaker 5: at the end of the day, you kind of go
- 9:51Speaker 5: into it knowing it might not work, but the result's
- 9:54Speaker 5: usually pretty good. Now, I will say PRP is a
- 9:57Speaker 5: little bit more toss-up than, say, some of the other ones.
- 10:00Speaker 5: But even at– I've had patients that have outstanding results.
- 10:02Speaker 5: I'll tell you, chronic hamstrings in some of my older patients,
- 10:05Speaker 5: even patients who are quite older, who's like, man, I've
- 10:08Speaker 5: been dealing with this for five years. We can sometimes
- 10:10Speaker 5: get it to go away. Yeah, but it's just– but
- 10:13Speaker 5: you just don't know.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Well, I've got a guy down the road with a hamstring.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I know a guy.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Doc, I might ask you this at least once a month.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Any updates on preventative surgeries for athletes? Any, like, metal
- 10:25Speaker 6: rods in our legs? Metal shields?
- 10:27Speaker 5: You know, I'm with you that I want to see
- 10:29Speaker 5: this world. I think we agree on this.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Super soldiers. Super soldiers.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I'm down.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I'm down.
- 10:34Speaker 5: You know, look, if you want to come in, we
- 10:37Speaker 5: can maybe get a guinea pig on you if you
- 10:38Speaker 5: want to try.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Try some stuff. Again, no promises.
- 10:42Speaker 6: If I'm a GM in the NFL and I got
- 10:44Speaker 6: a guy with a couple metal plates, that's pretty indestructible.
- 10:48Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Uh, ask doc, how many times have Flynn and Hester
- 10:52Speaker 4: asked you about guardian caps? It's over five times a
- 10:54Speaker 4: symptom of CTE.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Oof.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Well, yeah, probably.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I mean, but I, you know, maybe, maybe I got
- 11:02Speaker 5: CT cause I don't remember how many times.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So, you know, but I think it was kind of
- 11:04Speaker 2: a joke yesterday.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Like I'm pretty sure I've asked doc about that like
- 11:07Speaker 4: three times before.
- 11:08Speaker 2: It's like, well, we didn't wear, we didn't wear the
- 11:10Speaker 2: guardian cap. No, you know, they didn't.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Well, look, and who knows, you know, it's, it's, there's
- 11:13Speaker 5: a lot of conflicting data on those things.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You know, I think, I don't know.
- 11:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 3: So they might help, but they for sure look bad.
- 11:21Speaker 2: They look terrible.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah. They do.
- 11:23Speaker 2: They look awful.
- 11:24Speaker 6: Okay, so we were talking about this yesterday. That's why
- 11:27Speaker 6: we started talking about guardian caps yesterday. Because, okay, if
- 11:30Speaker 6: you're a receiver, a returner, defensive back, somebody where you're
- 11:34Speaker 6: going to make a lot of contact, two guys running
- 11:36Speaker 6: full speed.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Okay. And you got maybe a history of concussion. Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 3: why not? Let's just throw some stuff in there. Maybe
- 11:44Speaker 3: it works. Maybe it doesn't. But it doesn't matter. I
- 11:46Speaker 3: don't want to take the risk. If it works, great.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Um interior linemen how many head injuries do you see
- 11:53Speaker 6: in interior linemen play so in the trenches defensive tackles
- 11:58Speaker 6: offensive centers guards things like that because i'm seeing a
- 12:00Speaker 6: lot of defensive linemen wear these things and i don't
- 12:03Speaker 6: understand it because like they're not they're impacting their head
- 12:06Speaker 6: every single play and i get that and i don't
- 12:08Speaker 6: want to belittle that but the high speed impact I
- 12:13Speaker 6: believe is like what kind of causes a lot more
- 12:15Speaker 6: concussions or whiplash with, they're not getting a lot of
- 12:17Speaker 6: whiplash either.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Well, so, so one, the whiplash to kind of, I
- 12:20Speaker 5: got to kind of go backwards. It's not going to
- 12:22Speaker 5: help you with that. And, and the rotation, the whiplash,
- 12:24Speaker 5: the jerky motions. And sometimes those are the worst concussions
- 12:27Speaker 5: to see the guy, especially the rotational effects when these
- 12:29Speaker 5: guys kind of get hit from the side, it's not
- 12:31Speaker 5: as much.
- 12:31Speaker 2: The impact of the head, but that sudden rotation that
- 12:33Speaker 2: kind of.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Causes the jarring part.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So, so I mean, obviously it's not going to help
- 12:37Speaker 2: you with that.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Um, so we know that much, uh, You know, an
- 12:40Speaker 5: interesting thing though, with some of the interior linemen, you're right.
- 12:43Speaker 5: They don't give me the heavy impacts. You're not going
- 12:45Speaker 5: to see as many of these bad concussions, but the
- 12:48Speaker 5: caveat to that is there's a lot of people that
- 12:51Speaker 5: do a lot of the CT data, the research that
- 12:53Speaker 5: say it's more the repetitive blows, even maybe the subconcussive blows.
- 12:57Speaker 5: And so that's why part of the reasons we've changed
- 12:59Speaker 5: some of the practice changes. And you've talked about boxers,
- 13:01Speaker 5: the dementia pusillistica, where basically that was the first realization
- 13:05Speaker 5: of CT was in boxers. And they're getting hit in
- 13:07Speaker 5: the head all the time. Now they're getting some pretty
- 13:09Speaker 5: big hits too. So it's a combination of all the above.
- 13:11Speaker 5: And so what's worse having two or three really bad
- 13:14Speaker 5: hits the head that cause a bad concussion or multiple
- 13:17Speaker 5: sub concussive hits that maybe accumulate. And there's, there's mixed,
- 13:21Speaker 5: mixed opinions on that as well. So to answer your question,
- 13:25Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 13:25Speaker 2: What if you have to be honest with you?
- 13:28Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 6: How much of this research is doing as being done
- 13:31Speaker 6: by guardian cap company?
- 13:33Speaker 5: I'm not, they did a lot with the NFL early on,
- 13:37Speaker 5: but it's part of the problems of guarding cap is
- 13:38Speaker 5: the ones that are using NFL are not the exact
- 13:40Speaker 5: same version that the ones most people are getting in
- 13:42Speaker 5: the high school and lower levels.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Gotcha.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So it's hard to even compare one to the other.
- 13:47Speaker 2: The study is going to be an off-brand version. Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And then there's maybe not the same.
- 13:52Speaker 5: And then, and then the study that they did that
- 13:54Speaker 5: the one that did show good results was a very
- 13:57Speaker 5: limited study that was done sort of in conjunction with
- 14:00Speaker 5: the NFL and, Look, I think part of it is
- 14:02Speaker 5: they want to show they are trying to do something,
- 14:03Speaker 5: which they are. I mean, I don't want to downplay it.
- 14:05Speaker 5: We're all trying to– look, it's a contact sport. You're
- 14:09Speaker 5: going to hit heads. You're going to have injuries. You're
- 14:11Speaker 5: going to– that's part of it. I don't know that
- 14:13Speaker 5: we can remove that.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Or it's going to be an ugly game if
- 14:16Speaker 2: we do.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I mean, we're already penalizing running backs 15 yards for
- 14:20Speaker 4: unnecessary roughness.
- 14:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Because they ran through a guy.
- 14:24Speaker 5: I mean, I don't– look, maybe it's not a popular
- 14:26Speaker 5: opinion of some of my peers. I don't love all
- 14:28Speaker 5: the rule changes. I think– Some of them are good.
- 14:30Speaker 5: We need to discourage certain things. I definitely like some
- 14:33Speaker 5: of the practice changes. You've still got to be physical,
- 14:34Speaker 5: but let's not just constantly just go head-to-head. Let's let
- 14:37Speaker 5: the brain have a chance to chill out. But I
- 14:39Speaker 5: also think, look, this is a great game, and part
- 14:42Speaker 5: of what makes it great is the battle, the grit,
- 14:45Speaker 5: the intensity.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Imposing your will.
- 14:48Speaker 5: There's a reason why you watch these clips and what
- 14:50Speaker 5: you want to watch, these big hits. Look, that's what
- 14:52Speaker 5: we want to see. So how do we kind of
- 14:54Speaker 5: balance that? I don't know that I have the right answer.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Asking. Doc, do the players get bone density scans?
- 15:02Speaker 3: We do.
- 15:02Speaker 2: We do for actually all of our athletes.
- 15:04Speaker 5: We do bone density as part of our, and it's
- 15:07Speaker 5: more with the dieticians than with us. They're looking, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 5: the body composition. They're not as much looking at the
- 15:12Speaker 5: bone density as part of it, obviously. And if somebody
- 15:15Speaker 5: did come back with really highly abnormal results, then we're
- 15:17Speaker 5: going to question why. Most of these guys and girls,
- 15:19Speaker 5: they're young. They're not going to have a lot of
- 15:21Speaker 5: bone density issues. Now, occasionally if we had one, then
- 15:23Speaker 5: we would do something with that. They're actually using it
- 15:25Speaker 5: more for body composition, you know, looking at all that,
- 15:27Speaker 5: where can I help you to, to optimize your, your
- 15:31Speaker 5: training and your health and everything.
- 15:33Speaker 6: How do you, where's your stance on blue light? Blue light. Well,
- 15:40Speaker 6: do I know that I wear blue light glasses?
- 15:42Speaker 4: You know, there, there's, this feels like you trying to like,
- 15:45Speaker 4: wear them but you want doc to take.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Them i'm wearing them off well i do.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Like you want doc to jump on a grenade here
- 15:51Speaker 2: so you can wear.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Led lighting and all these new lighting systems we filtered
- 15:54Speaker 5: out a lot of the red lights and that's part
- 15:56Speaker 5: of why there's all this red light treatment is they're
- 15:57Speaker 5: saying maybe it's more important to be fair there's some
- 15:59Speaker 5: studies especially with your sleep patterns and blue light you
- 16:02Speaker 5: should probably have less blue lighting at night you should
- 16:04Speaker 5: probably kind of dim the lights you should probably use
- 16:05Speaker 5: more of the other colored lightings and but on the
- 16:08Speaker 5: other hand you know that's still kind.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Of early give headaches probably probably.
- 16:13Speaker 5: You know Too much of it.
- 16:17Speaker 6: I do wear blue-eyed glasses at the office. I don't
- 16:21Speaker 6: know if it helps. Probably doesn't.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Can't hurt.
- 16:23Speaker 2: A lot of things don't hurt.
- 16:25Speaker 5: So much of what's out there, you can get a
- 16:29Speaker 5: great sales pitch for a lot of things in medicine,
- 16:31Speaker 5: and we're seeing it every day, especially my feeds, because
- 16:34Speaker 5: I look at a lot of stuff, so I see
- 16:35Speaker 5: all this stuff, and I'm like, most of it's probably BS,
- 16:38Speaker 5: but don't spend a fortune on whatever it is, and
- 16:41Speaker 5: if it seems reasonable, why not?
- 16:43Speaker 2: The more you spend, the more you believe, though, Doc.
- 16:45Speaker 2: There's some truth to that, too. I can't ask this
- 16:48Speaker 2: question to Doc. Why?
- 16:50Speaker 4: Because he's not allowed to answer it. But, Steven, well
- 16:54Speaker 4: done for trying. Doc, don't answer a word of this.
- 16:58Speaker 2: All right. I have a friend named Rhett Reeks.
- 17:02Speaker 4: And he broke his leg playing pickup football, watching the
- 17:05Speaker 4: Ole Miss game.
- 17:06Speaker 2: We have another pickup game November the 7th.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Can he play?
- 17:10Speaker 2: I will say it's a great effort, and I got it.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Respect the name Rhett.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I understand where he was going with it, but with
- 17:17Speaker 5: my Rhett at home, that's kind of funny.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Well done, Steven. I hope your friend's doing well.
- 17:25Speaker 5: As much as you would love to play ball with
- 17:26Speaker 5: your friend, I'd love to see him out there playing ball.
- 17:28Speaker 5: I can promise you that.
- 17:31Speaker 2: We'll see. Rhett Reeks is Pretty good player. I hope
- 17:36Speaker 2: he's all right. Sounds like a strong name to play ball.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I hope he's all right.
- 17:38Speaker 2: All right, Doc, we appreciate you every single week. Thanks
- 17:40Speaker 2: for hopping on with us. Always a pleasure. All right,
- 17:42Speaker 2: we will step away.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Don't forget, we've got Coach Kim Mulkey joining us in
- 17:45Speaker 4: about 10 minutes from now.
- 17:47Speaker 2: We'll have it right here for you on OTB.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Off the bench.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Uh-huh. Can y'all really feel me?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Feel us.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yes, we feel you.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Feel us.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yes, we feel you. Say what? Here we go.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Can y'all really feel me?
- 18:00Speaker 2: Welcome back to Off the Bench. Wednesday's show is brought
- 18:04Speaker 2: to you by Poncho. Welcome back to Off the Bench.
- 18:39Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in OTB here live from the
- 18:44Speaker 4: Raising Cane Studio. We do want to remind you that
- 18:49Speaker 4: we will not be at Rouse's this Friday. It is
- 18:52Speaker 4: a bye week for us at Rouse's as well, but
- 18:54Speaker 4: don't worry. The next week for Bama Game Week, we
- 18:58Speaker 4: absolutely will be at Rouse's on Burbank and Lee. But
- 19:01Speaker 4: that does not mean that you can't go to your
- 19:04Speaker 4: local Rouse's and save. Because weekly specials for your Rouse's
- 19:08Speaker 4: are going to be right there at Rouse's.com.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Find a location that's convenient for you.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Then you can be able to pick up those tailgating packages.
- 19:16Speaker 4: You can be able to pick up holidays coming up.
- 19:19Speaker 4: They got everything you need there. You know they're going
- 19:20Speaker 4: to have local as well. Today, right now, breakfast bar,
- 19:24Speaker 4: sushi bar, lunch bar, salad bar, everything, right there at
- 19:27Speaker 4: your local Rouse's. Go to rouses.com. How are you feeling
- 19:36Speaker 4: about Coach Mulkey coming on?
- 19:37Speaker 2: I feel great. Nervous?
- 19:40Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:43Speaker 9: It doesn't help that he asked us about a question,
- 19:45Speaker 9: and I was like, I.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Didn't love it either, but as soon as you said it,
- 19:48Speaker 4: he knew. He knew if he asked you that you
- 19:50Speaker 4: would give him the truth, and you did, and so
- 19:53Speaker 4: he's like, okay.
- 19:55Speaker 3: She's so wise. I wanted to ask her. I just said.
- 19:58Speaker 9: That's what people always say about me.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Just said that.
- 20:02Speaker 3: So I got my answer, though.
- 20:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 3: So don't ask it.
- 20:05Speaker 7: I wouldn't.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I wouldn't ask that.
- 20:07Speaker 7: But.
- 20:08Speaker 9: Ask her about social media. Okay. Went well last time.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Absolutely. Walked out of the park.
- 20:14Speaker 2: You know, I'm not really sure what you're asking me, but.
- 20:16Speaker 9: That's what happens when Jake leaves.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I respect the fact that you're asking me something.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Let me try to answer this.
- 20:22Speaker 3: There's words coming out.
- 20:24Speaker 2: They're just not formulating a sentence.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Yeah, they're not great words. They're there.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You think, like, somebody was next to her, like an
- 20:32Speaker 4: assistant or whatever, and maybe he was on speakerphone, and.
- 20:35Speaker 3: He asked her, and she was like, What is this?
- 20:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 20:41Speaker 2: In my head, I like to think that that is
- 20:43Speaker 2: how it plays out.
- 20:47Speaker 9: When is Rouse's? There's no Rouse's this week, but next week.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I just said that.
- 20:51Speaker 9: I know, but somebody said, when is Rouse's?
- 20:54Speaker 4: Next week we'll be there. But you can go to
- 20:57Speaker 4: Rouse's today. You don't need us to go there.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they got my high there. You can go get hydrated.
- 21:02Speaker 3: It's delicious.
- 21:03Speaker 2: It's nutritious.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Makes you feel amazing.
- 21:10Speaker 7: Facts.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 2: That's all I speak.
- 21:13Speaker 9: That's all I speak.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. I finally got Dr. Etheridge to come
- 21:16Speaker 2: over here and pick out a poncho.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Oh, good for you.
- 21:19Speaker 9: Which one was it?
- 21:20Speaker 2: He wanted to get the LSU one. Yeah. He got
- 21:22Speaker 2: the purple.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Smart.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Because literally when I say that man helps me and
- 21:27Speaker 4: Flynn out, and the Flynn and Hester families as much
- 21:30Speaker 4: as anybody, it's like, you're going to come over here
- 21:32Speaker 4: and you're going to pick out a poncho.
- 21:34Speaker 2: We're getting it for you.
- 21:35Speaker 4: And if you want a poncho, you go to ponchooutdoors.com
- 21:38Speaker 4: slash offthebench.com.
- 21:40Speaker 3: They probably don't get any like deals.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I think it's $ 10 off if they go there right now.
- 21:46Speaker 4: So actually they do. I am sitting here with coach Mulkey,
- 21:53Speaker 4: you know, going to come on today and we're going
- 21:55Speaker 4: to make an effort to, because if you remember like
- 21:58Speaker 4: back in the day when Will Wade was here the
- 21:59Speaker 4: first time, like he came on OTB every single week,
- 22:02Speaker 4: that effort is being.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Made as well.
- 22:05Speaker 4: And so hopefully, you know, because we have both basketball coaches,
- 22:09Speaker 4: we have softball, we have baseball, gymnastics. We love to
- 22:12Speaker 4: have coaches on, so hopefully we can get Will to
- 22:14Speaker 4: come back on weekly as well.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Going to put that ask out there this week.
- 22:19Speaker 4: They're going to start their season coming up on November
- 22:23Speaker 4: the 3rd against LSU New Orleans, the artist formerly known
- 22:26Speaker 4: as UNO. And then they've got Texas Southern, they've got
- 22:29Speaker 4: Louisiana Tech, and then they've got a trip to number 15, Gonzaga,
- 22:33Speaker 4: coming up on November the 14th. That's going to be
- 22:35Speaker 4: a great test for LSU going across the country in
- 22:39Speaker 4: a place that's very difficult to play in. So looking
- 22:42Speaker 4: forward to being back though, even if it's not sweet 16,
- 22:47Speaker 4: just to be able to go back into the PMAC
- 22:49Speaker 4: and feel like every time you go in there, your
- 22:51Speaker 4: team has a chance.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Like, that's what I'm like.
- 22:54Speaker 4: I just go in there and feel like your team
- 22:56Speaker 4: actually has an opportunity to play well.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I want a line at the concession stand. I don't
- 23:01Speaker 2: want to have to walk up and they'd be like,
- 23:02Speaker 2: you're back for your third time. Like, I don't want
- 23:04Speaker 2: to know that people selling popcorn. Yeah. I want there
- 23:07Speaker 2: to be so many people that they don't recognize me.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Hadn't been that way in a couple years.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great point, actually. I'm right there with you.
- 23:16Speaker 4: And that is the hope. We know Coach Mulkey's team
- 23:19Speaker 4: is going to do their thing. We have seen it.
- 23:21Speaker 4: It's played out too many times. We know there's going
- 23:23Speaker 4: to be great crowds there. I want great crowds at
- 23:26Speaker 4: the PMAC. I want good basketball at the PMAC, no
- 23:29Speaker 4: matter who's playing in the building. And I think we're
- 23:31Speaker 4: going to get that as well. But speaking of Coach Mulkey,
- 23:34Speaker 4: let's go ahead and take a break. because we are
- 23:37Speaker 4: going to start our weekly conversations with Coach Kim Mulkey
- 23:40Speaker 4: when we come back here on OTB.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Off the bench.
- 23:44Speaker 4: All right, go to FABT.com, First American Bank and Trust.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Been in the game for well over 100 years. Since 1910,
- 23:52Speaker 4: they have been here in southeast Louisiana. Go find a
- 23:54Speaker 4: location at their website, FABT.com, and just know you are
- 23:58Speaker 4: going to always be a relationship. You're going to be
- 24:00Speaker 4: a name. You're going to be a face. They are
- 24:02Speaker 4: going to know you. You are going to know them.
- 24:04Speaker 4: You're not going to be just another account number. And
- 24:06Speaker 4: when decisions are made, they are made local. They're made
- 24:09Speaker 4: right here. They don't call and ask for permission. Go
- 24:12Speaker 4: to FABT.com today.
- 24:14Speaker 6: So our First American Bank and Trust, when you think
- 24:16Speaker 6: of like local banks, you might think of, man, they
- 24:19Speaker 6: probably don't even have a website.
- 24:20Speaker 2: They probably don't even have a good online platform.
- 24:22Speaker 6: Well, that is absolutely false. It might be true for
- 24:24Speaker 6: a lot of other local and small banks, but not
- 24:27Speaker 6: First American Bank and Trust. They've been doing business since 1910.
- 24:31Speaker 6: They got all the bells and whistles that the big
- 24:32Speaker 6: boys do. All those national banks do. You go on
- 24:35Speaker 6: their online platform is incredible, but guess what? It's not
- 24:38Speaker 6: people that work on the left coast or in New
- 24:40Speaker 6: York city. It's people right here in your community. First
- 24:42Speaker 6: American bank and trust FABT.com.
- 24:46Speaker 8: Say my name, say my name If no one is
- 24:49Speaker 8: around you Say baby, I love you If you ain't
- 24:52Speaker 8: running game Say my name, say my name You acting
- 24:55Speaker 8: kinda shady Ain't calling me baby Why the sudden change?
- 25:00Speaker 8: Say my name, say my name If no one is
- 25:03Speaker 8: around you Say baby, I love you If you ain't
- 25:06Speaker 8: running game Say my name, say my name You acting
- 25:09Speaker 8: kinda shady Ain't calling me baby Welcome back to Off
- 25:13Speaker 8: the Bench. Wednesday's show is brought to you by Poncho.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Why don't you say the.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Things that you said to me yesterday?
- 25:51Speaker 6: All right, welcome back here.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Off the bench.
- 25:55Speaker 6: Before we get into the next segment, before we get
- 25:58Speaker 6: Coach Mulkey on the line, I want to tell you
- 26:00Speaker 6: about our friends over at Caterus. When you think about Louisiana,
- 26:03Speaker 6: you think about energy. And one company helping shape the
- 26:05Speaker 6: future is Caterus. Caterus, developing the Commonwealth LNG Export Facility
- 26:09Speaker 6: over there in Cameron Parish, connecting American natural gas with
- 26:13Speaker 6: customers around the world. Now, under construction after reaching the
- 26:16Speaker 6: final investment decision back in 2026, the project represents a
- 26:20Speaker 6: major investment in Louisiana's future. But it's about more than
- 26:23Speaker 6: just exporting energy. It's about creating Louisiana jobs, supporting local businesses,
- 26:28Speaker 6: strengthening communities, and reinforcing Louisiana's position as one of the
- 26:31Speaker 6: world's leading energy hubs. Through its natural gas production and
- 26:35Speaker 6: the Commonwealth LNG project, Cataris is helping build an integrated
- 26:38Speaker 6: energy platform that connects domestic resources with the growing global demand.
- 26:43Speaker 3: As construction continues on Louisiana's.
- 26:44Speaker 6: Gulf Coast, Catalyst is proud to invest in American energy,
- 26:47Speaker 6: American workers, and a stronger economic future. Catalyst, connecting Louisiana
- 26:51Speaker 6: energy to the world.
- 26:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:56Speaker 4: The return of our favorite guest cannot wait for this.
- 27:00Speaker 4: We look forward to it every single year, and we're
- 27:03Speaker 4: going to do it every single week. The head coach
- 27:05Speaker 4: for the LSU basketball team, Coach Kim Mulkey, joins us
- 27:09Speaker 4: here on OTB.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Coach, what's going on? How are you doing?
- 27:13Speaker 7: Good morning. Doing great. How are you guys?
- 27:16Speaker 2: Doing fantastic. Good to hear your voice. Glad to have
- 27:19Speaker 2: you back on.
- 27:20Speaker 4: But before we get to any of the basketball stuff,
- 27:23Speaker 4: and the season's already started, we know that.
- 27:26Speaker 2: How have you been? How's life? How have things been
- 27:28Speaker 2: going for you?
- 27:30Speaker 7: Well, I love my summers, and just had a great summer.
- 27:36Speaker 7: Of course, travel and see the grandkids and go and
- 27:40Speaker 7: see some WNBA games with former players. And here we
- 27:45Speaker 7: are ready or not football season. You got to start
- 27:49Speaker 7: playing a little basketball. We played an exhibition against North
- 27:54Speaker 7: Texas out of Dallas, a little small NAI school, young, uh,
- 27:59Speaker 7: the coach had been asking me for years, you know, exhibitions,
- 28:03Speaker 7: I just want to help people. We pay them to come,
- 28:06Speaker 7: and that's a big part of their budget, and those
- 28:08Speaker 7: young ladies get to say they played at the PMAC
- 28:10Speaker 7: and played against LSU. So then we'll play another one Thursday,
- 28:14Speaker 7: Loyola out of New Orleans, play those guys, and then
- 28:17Speaker 7: we start up for real Monday against Southeastern.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Coach, you mentioned a couple of exhibition games, and in
- 28:25Speaker 4: college football, we don't have that.
- 28:27Speaker 2: We don't have it like we had in the NFL.
- 28:28Speaker 4: We had preseason games, but you get a chance to
- 28:30Speaker 4: have some exhibitions today You're playing two. Does that feel
- 28:33Speaker 4: like a good number just to get out there against
- 28:35Speaker 4: somebody else regardless of the opponent, just somebody that's not
- 28:38Speaker 4: in purple and gold because during training camp, you get
- 28:41Speaker 4: tired of seeing the same face over and over again.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Does that feel like a good number of two exhibition
- 28:46Speaker 4: games to get ready for the season?
- 28:48Speaker 7: Well, you always want to play against other people. We're
- 28:52Speaker 7: limited on how many we can do, but here's the
- 28:55Speaker 7: thing a lot of people are doing. they're doing the
- 28:57Speaker 7: closed scrimmages versus the exhibition.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:01Speaker 7: I've never done the closed scrimmages. I want our fans
- 29:05Speaker 7: to meet our kids. I want them to see who's
- 29:08Speaker 7: out there because especially now with transfer portal, you never
- 29:12Speaker 7: know from one year to the next, who's going to
- 29:14Speaker 7: be on your team. So the exhibitions are exactly what
- 29:18Speaker 7: they say. You're just basically out there exhibiting your new
- 29:21Speaker 7: team and, You play teams that can benefit by getting
- 29:26Speaker 7: money from LSU and say that they got to play
- 29:30Speaker 7: against LSU. And I don't, of course, look at the score.
- 29:34Speaker 7: We do keep score, but I don't know that I'll
- 29:37Speaker 7: ever go to a closed scrimmage. because I want our
- 29:40Speaker 7: fans to start coming out.
- 29:44Speaker 6: Coach, let's take a look at this 2026-2017 team. You
- 29:50Speaker 6: preseason ranked in the top ten, and we get it.
- 29:53Speaker 6: We're former players, and I know you don't look at rankings.
- 29:57Speaker 6: How do you rank all the preseason stuff? But it
- 30:00Speaker 6: is an acknowledgment, at least, of returners and the work
- 30:03Speaker 6: that you and your coaching staff were able to do
- 30:05Speaker 6: in the offseason. So it is an acknowledgment of that.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Talk about kind of the pieces that you are returning
- 30:12Speaker 6: and some of the key pieces that you brought into
- 30:14Speaker 6: this team.
- 30:16Speaker 7: You know, every year you're going to lose players, guys.
- 30:18Speaker 7: It's just the nature of the beast now. And so
- 30:22Speaker 7: you go get in the portal, and we brought in–
- 30:26Speaker 7: new players that go along with the returning players. Let's
- 30:30Speaker 7: start with Kayla Williams. This will be her fourth year
- 30:33Speaker 7: at LSU, Bossier City Parkway High School product, and she's
- 30:38Speaker 7: on a lot of preseason All-American lists, and she's going
- 30:42Speaker 7: to be a top draft pick. So she's one of
- 30:46Speaker 7: our captains, and let's talk about Malaysia Full Wally. She's
- 30:50Speaker 7: going into her second season with us. And Quick as Lightning.
- 30:55Speaker 7: So those two people know about, talk about. She should
- 30:58Speaker 7: also probably be a top draft pick, but I think
- 31:01Speaker 7: it depends on what kind of year she has. Jada
- 31:05Speaker 7: Williams would be our point guard. She is a young
- 31:08Speaker 7: lady that played on a lot of summer teams with Michaela,
- 31:12Speaker 7: with USA Basketball. She was a McDonald's All-American. She'll be
- 31:15Speaker 7: a crowd favorite because she just has that bubbly personality.
- 31:20Speaker 7: And from there, you'll go to Zee Johnson. Zee and
- 31:25Speaker 7: Jada and Michaela are three captains, and Zee had an
- 31:28Speaker 7: unbelievable freshman year. She's playing both inside and outside for
- 31:33Speaker 7: us this year. She was on the all-freshman SEC team
- 31:38Speaker 7: and just really, really such a great team player. Grace
- 31:42Speaker 7: Knox has had an unbelievable preseason season. camp, and she'll
- 31:48Speaker 7: be a sophomore, and she's our 6'2 post player inside,
- 31:52Speaker 7: and she's really, really worked on her game where she
- 31:56Speaker 7: can take you outside now and shoot the three ball
- 31:59Speaker 7: and do some things that will be very valuable for
- 32:01Speaker 7: her being really an undersized post player. We brought in
- 32:06Speaker 7: Chloe Larry. Chloe was at Tennessee Tech, played high school
- 32:10Speaker 7: ball with Michaela Williams, will be a left-handed point guard
- 32:13Speaker 7: for us, and just has to get used to the
- 32:15Speaker 7: speed and quickness at this level. And she'll have to,
- 32:19Speaker 7: you know, every day, just understand that, wow, this is physical.
- 32:24Speaker 7: And then Lord, I hope I don't forget everybody else.
- 32:26Speaker 7: Let's start with Layla Reynolds. I'm doing this off the
- 32:29Speaker 7: top of my head. Layla Reynolds played at Florida last year,
- 32:32Speaker 7: six foot perimeter player. That's just kind of, I call
- 32:36Speaker 7: her kind of wiry. She's long and she's got, the
- 32:40Speaker 7: ability to be a really good defensive player, but she
- 32:42Speaker 7: also has a mid-range game and very, very quick. And
- 32:47Speaker 7: then from there, you've got to talk a little bit
- 32:50Speaker 7: about old Meg. Meg's back for us. Meg is from
- 32:53Speaker 7: the Maryland area, and she's kind of a bulky role-player
- 32:59Speaker 7: for us that comes in and does what we need
- 33:01Speaker 7: her to do. We signed two international kids, Anna Maneva.
- 33:06Speaker 7: Anna is a 6'5 young lady, 17 years old from Russia.
- 33:12Speaker 7: And we got to get her on the floor. She's
- 33:13Speaker 7: had some nagging little quad injuries. So hopefully we'll have
- 33:17Speaker 7: her on the floor today. And then you've got Noah Morrow.
- 33:21Speaker 7: She's our oldest international player. She's only 21. But when
- 33:25Speaker 7: I say older, you got to remember, we're going to
- 33:27Speaker 7: be extremely young inside, freshmen, sophomores. So Noah is a
- 33:31Speaker 7: 6'3 young lady that plays on the Spain's national team,
- 33:35Speaker 7: and she can take you outside and shoot the three ball.
- 33:39Speaker 7: So let me see. Who else am I missing? Y'all
- 33:41Speaker 7: got my prize.
- 33:43Speaker 3: I think you nailed it.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Coach, I think you got everybody. I think you did
- 33:47Speaker 2: it off the top of your head. It's impressive.
- 33:50Speaker 7: Well, we have 11 solid players, and they've been a
- 33:54Speaker 7: joy to coach. And we've just got to keep them
- 33:56Speaker 7: all healthy. Right now we've been playing with nine, so.
- 34:00Speaker 7: We'll get out there and we'll compete. Our schedule is
- 34:03Speaker 7: such that it's probably too hard for this team right now,
- 34:07Speaker 7: but it was done a long time ago when you
- 34:09Speaker 7: didn't know who you were going to have. So we've
- 34:11Speaker 7: got UConn and Nashville right before Christmas. We'll play NC
- 34:15Speaker 7: State and Villanova. We have to go to North Carolina
- 34:19Speaker 7: for the ACC Challenge. We'll play Belmont. There's a lot
- 34:23Speaker 7: of good teams that will be on this schedule.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Catching up with Coach Kim Mulkey here on OTB.
- 34:30Speaker 4: And Coach, I mean, you know, the roster right there
- 34:33Speaker 4: that you laid out, a lot of really, really good players.
- 34:35Speaker 2: But I want to ask you about leadership. So when
- 34:38Speaker 2: you have leaders that are old veteran leaders and they
- 34:41Speaker 2: move on, like Flage goes to the WNBA, not the
- 34:43Speaker 2: only leader that you lose, but she goes on to
- 34:45Speaker 2: the WNBA. She played here so long and immediately as
- 34:48Speaker 2: soon as she got here, she starts playing. So when
- 34:50Speaker 2: you lose a leader like that, In your coaching style,
- 34:53Speaker 2: do you challenge players to be more of a leader?
- 34:56Speaker 2: Do you try to allow it to happen organically? How
- 34:59Speaker 2: do you go about approaching to make sure that you
- 35:02Speaker 2: have the right leadership on your team?
- 35:04Speaker 7: Well, I think leadership surfaces within that particular team. I
- 35:09Speaker 7: don't try to make them into something that they're not.
- 35:12Speaker 7: You've got those leaders out there, guys that are going
- 35:14Speaker 7: to lead by example. They're going to be the ones
- 35:16Speaker 7: that bust their rear every day. They're going to be
- 35:18Speaker 7: the first ones in practice, the last ones to lead.
- 35:21Speaker 7: They're going to give you everything they have during the
- 35:22Speaker 7: course of a practice. Then you've got the leaders that
- 35:25Speaker 7: are more vocal. And one is not any more important
- 35:30Speaker 7: than the other. I just need people to want to lead.
- 35:33Speaker 7: I find this generation, they don't want to lead. They
- 35:36Speaker 7: want to be your best friend. And leaders aren't always
- 35:38Speaker 7: going to be your best friend. They're going to say
- 35:40Speaker 7: things to you during the course of a game or
- 35:42Speaker 7: practice that might be pretty intense. And you can't take
- 35:48Speaker 7: it personally. And so I tell those people who take
- 35:51Speaker 7: it personal, see, you're a follower, but yet you don't
- 35:54Speaker 7: really want to follow either. So it's tough. I think
- 35:59Speaker 7: leaders in the past, man, you wanted to be a captain.
- 36:02Speaker 7: You wanted to be a leader because that was kind
- 36:05Speaker 7: of a reward for being recognized. And now I'm not
- 36:11Speaker 7: sure kids care if they're captains or not, but it's
- 36:15Speaker 7: a pretty big deal because You're the voice in that
- 36:18Speaker 7: locker room. You're the voice to that team when the
- 36:21Speaker 7: coaches aren't around. So I think we've got a quiet team.
- 36:26Speaker 7: I challenge them every day. Their personalities are quiet, but
- 36:30Speaker 7: when you play this game, guys, you can't play it quiet.
- 36:32Speaker 7: You have to play it with enthusiasm. You've got to
- 36:34Speaker 7: talk defensively. So that has been a really big thing
- 36:38Speaker 7: for us as coaches is to make them talk every
- 36:40Speaker 7: day when they're on the court.
- 36:42Speaker 6: Coach, you talk about leadership and I find it like
- 36:45Speaker 6: in this new fascinating world, this landscape of college athletics, like,
- 36:50Speaker 6: is it, do you find that it's easier to become
- 36:54Speaker 6: a leader if you are established at that current school?
- 36:57Speaker 6: Or is it more like the skins on the wall
- 36:59Speaker 6: are basically starts? I mean, you brought in some girls
- 37:02Speaker 6: this year, Layla Reynolds, that has 97 career starts in
- 37:05Speaker 6: the SEC, right? And Jada Williams, who's a senior, like,
- 37:08Speaker 6: Where do you look for those seniors or the leadership
- 37:12Speaker 6: to take shape?
- 37:13Speaker 7: I think you said it best. I think the ones
- 37:17Speaker 7: that are here that have invested in the program and
- 37:20Speaker 7: been here the longest, you bet. Those are usually your leaders.
- 37:26Speaker 7: But I also believe, like Jada Williams is one of
- 37:29Speaker 7: our captains, I also believe your personality and how you
- 37:36Speaker 7: interact with your team surfaces, no matter if you just
- 37:40Speaker 7: got there or not. And that's Jada Williams. She's constantly
- 37:44Speaker 7: talking on the floor. She's constantly cheering. But that's also
- 37:51Speaker 7: the position she plays. When you think of football, you
- 37:54Speaker 7: think of your quarterback, right? Leading. That's your coach on
- 37:57Speaker 7: the field offensively. And defensively, it could be a linebacker.
- 38:02Speaker 7: It could be somebody at a skilled position on the
- 38:05Speaker 7: offensive side of the ball. That's your leader. So you're
- 38:10Speaker 7: going to have to be very observant because every year
- 38:13Speaker 7: you're not going to have the same team anymore. So
- 38:16Speaker 7: when you start workouts, you watch and you see the
- 38:19Speaker 7: interaction and you listen and you see what's going on
- 38:22Speaker 7: on the court. And then what I do, I give
- 38:26Speaker 7: them a note card and I'll tell them, put your
- 38:29Speaker 7: name at the top of that note card. And I
- 38:32Speaker 7: want you to write two people in this locker room
- 38:34Speaker 7: that you would be very willing to follow, that you
- 38:37Speaker 7: trust them, that, man, that would be a good captain.
- 38:41Speaker 7: And if it is yourself, put yourself on there. So
- 38:44Speaker 7: I kind of let them engage in who they think
- 38:48Speaker 7: their captains should be. Now, it's interesting because who I
- 38:53Speaker 7: think a captain should be sometimes, sometimes they don't even
- 38:56Speaker 7: have their names on any of the note cards. So
- 38:59Speaker 7: it's kind of feedback for me personally. I ultimately make
- 39:04Speaker 7: the decision on captains, but I definitely get feedback from
- 39:07Speaker 7: the players. And you never share that. You know, it's personal.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 39:11Speaker 7: And I put it in their little folder so that
- 39:13Speaker 7: when they graduate, I can go back years from now
- 39:16Speaker 7: and go, wow, I remember that.
- 39:19Speaker 2: All right. There she is, Coach Kim Mulkey.
- 39:21Speaker 4: We are so fired up to have her back on
- 39:23Speaker 4: the show every single week. Look, this LSU team has
- 39:26Speaker 4: seven straight home games to open up the season.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Go see this team.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Inside the PMAC. Coach, we can't thank you enough, and
- 39:32Speaker 4: we look forward to it every single week.
- 39:34Speaker 7: Hey, go buy your tickets now. We're just about sold
- 39:37Speaker 7: out again. I think a week ago we had 90
- 39:40Speaker 7: tickets left to be a sellout for season tickets. So
- 39:44Speaker 7: go get a few tickets, guys. Take care and look
- 39:47Speaker 7: forward to visiting with y'all this year.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 39:50Speaker 4: Again, Coach Kim Mulkey, go buy those tickets. Let's see
- 39:53Speaker 4: if we can get those 90 tickets sold out today.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And again, we look forward to that every single week.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Appreciate her time. Excited about this team. All right, we
- 40:01Speaker 4: will step away. We've got more OTB coming your way
- 40:04Speaker 4: when we jump back here inside the Raising Cane Studio.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Off the bench.
- 40:10Speaker 4: All right, if you are looking to upgrade your bathroom
- 40:12Speaker 4: at your home and you're just thinking, man, I just
- 40:14Speaker 4: don't have the time right now. I don't have the
- 40:17Speaker 4: ability to have a big mess in my house because
- 40:20Speaker 4: I can't have three, four, five weeks of demolition and construction,
- 40:24Speaker 4: and I just can't do it right now. Well, maybe
- 40:26Speaker 4: that's the case with a lot of people. It's not

- 41:23Speaker 2: Wednesday's show is brought to you by Poncho.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I was stupid. I was foolish.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I was.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Right here. Cause baby.
- 42:21Speaker 8: It's hard to believe Come back, baby, please Cause we
- 42:25Speaker 8: belong together.
- 42:27Speaker 3: Laundra, is this your karaoke song?
- 42:29Speaker 9: I love this song. It should be my karaoke song.
- 42:33Speaker 9: I don't like to do songs where, like, the singer's, like,
- 42:36Speaker 9: exceptionally good at singing. Because... Yeah.
- 42:41Speaker 8: No.
- 42:42Speaker 2: At some point, you gotta try to hit the high note.
- 42:44Speaker 9: And I can't.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Well, nobody can. And not in this song. You know.
- 42:48Speaker 2: But you're gonna try. It's just not going to go well.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Like the Saints. Sure, bud.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Got a lot of good tries out there.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Yeah, did you see all the good tries ahead?
- 43:02Speaker 2: Yeah, we worked really hard this week. We just got
- 43:05Speaker 2: to really dig in and solve this thing.
- 43:08Speaker 4: Wow.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Solving problems, Kellen. I hate that one. Why are you
- 43:15Speaker 2: not dug in already?
- 43:17Speaker 9: Just got to dig in.
- 43:19Speaker 6: It's a chance, though. I heard him say it's a
- 43:21Speaker 6: really good chance for... Good collaborative experience for their offensive staff.
- 43:27Speaker 6: The running game. It's a good time for collaboration.
- 43:33Speaker 2: I don't know how it was for you.
- 43:34Speaker 9: Y'all not already collaborating?
- 43:36Speaker 3: No.
- 43:37Speaker 4: But I've interviewed your old head coach enough to kind
- 43:41Speaker 4: of know who he is. And I know you don't
- 43:43Speaker 4: know Norv like I know him, but I'm saying I
- 43:45Speaker 4: feel like I know your coach and I know I
- 43:46Speaker 4: know my coach from the NFL. If things weren't going right,
- 43:52Speaker 4: If there was something that we couldn't do, it wasn't
- 43:55Speaker 4: a fun week. It wasn't a comfortable week at practice
- 43:58Speaker 4: and in the facility by design. And that's the way
- 44:01Speaker 4: it should be. And if we couldn't run the ball,
- 44:05Speaker 4: we were going to work on it. We were going
- 44:07Speaker 4: to figure it out. If we were bad on third downs,
- 44:11Speaker 4: we were going to work on it. Not like down
- 44:13Speaker 4: the road.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Yep.
- 44:16Speaker 2: That week, we were going to figure it out.
- 44:18Speaker 4: And if somebody tried to leave as soon as, like, basically, like,
- 44:22Speaker 4: in school when the bell rings, everybody leaves.
- 44:23Speaker 2: If somebody tried to.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Leave as soon as practice broke down, we had Phillip Rivers,
- 44:29Speaker 4: Landon Tomlinson, Vincent Jackson.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Hey, where are you going?
- 44:33Speaker 7: Uh-uh.
- 44:34Speaker 4: No, you're going to come back here. We're going to
- 44:36Speaker 4: be here until about 637 tonight. And that was, like,
- 44:40Speaker 4: every single time if there was an issue. If it
- 44:41Speaker 4: was defensively, like, Eric Weddle was like, hey, what are
- 44:45Speaker 4: you doing?
- 44:45Speaker 2: No, get back in. Like, we haven't gotten this figured out.
- 44:47Speaker 2: We're going to figure it out. Yeah, we're going to evaluate.
- 44:51Speaker 2: We're going to evaluate. We're going to self-evaluate.
- 44:53Speaker 6: We're going to evaluate my foot in your ass right now.
- 45:00Speaker 2: I don't need to watch the film. I don't need
- 45:02Speaker 2: to evaluate it.
- 45:03Speaker 6: Because we're not going to learn anything from that. We're
- 45:07Speaker 6: just going to watch bad team play football. We're going
- 45:10Speaker 6: to evaluate how I'm about to run your ass in
- 45:13Speaker 6: the dirt.
- 45:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Maybe the coaches.
- 45:18Speaker 4: Look, in one way or another, and I guess that's
- 45:21Speaker 4: kind of what I'm saying, too. Like, our coaches didn't
- 45:24Speaker 4: really even have to do it because it would never
- 45:25Speaker 4: get past that. But if it would have, then Mike
- 45:28Speaker 4: McCarthy would have been like, no, that's not what we're doing.
- 45:31Speaker 2: And we don't see that right now. Not even close.
- 45:34Speaker 2: More hour number three, OTB.
- 45:36Speaker 1: Off the bench.
