- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30One of the most important lessons that I have ever learned
- 0:33from this farm is that the smallest of small things can
- 0:38make a big difference, and not always in a positive way or in a
- 0:41negative way. Small things add up and make a
- 0:44great big positive difference, and small things add up and make
- 0:47a great big negative difference. I can talk about this and say,
- 0:51OK, let's talk about Japanese beetles.
- 0:54That is one thing that can take stuff out very, very quickly.
- 0:59And when they show up, we're moving into that season when
- 1:03they start to show up out here and they're small, right like
- 1:07that. Most of the time they're the
- 1:08size of the finger, your pinky fingernail, fingernail.
- 1:12And the crazy part is they come in and they do such damage
- 1:17because they eat through leaves and they just decimate a plant
- 1:22very, very quickly. And I love to think of them in
- 1:25terms of like, OK, I've got to get them while they're small.
- 1:29And there's only a few of them small in numbers before I let
- 1:32them take off. Because if I let them just get
- 1:35here and I don't do anything about it.
- 1:37The biggest problem you have is that before you know it, your
- 1:40plants are completely, like I said, decimated.
- 1:43But they are harder to come back because of the time of year when
- 1:47they're here. It's hotter.
- 1:48It gets starts to get hotter and hotter and hotter.
- 1:50And in this heat, that is not a friend of certain things to
- 1:54rebound from, from having just become emaciated.
- 1:58So I have to take care of them quickly.
- 2:01And that involves, you know, some people will say you have to
- 2:05spray. I don't spray.
- 2:06I won't put anything out. But what I, I put traps off to
- 2:09the side and I try to catch them.
- 2:11Now it's, it's one of these things that's hit or miss.
- 2:15Most of the time you're going to end up with some and it's OK,
- 2:20you know that it doesn't take out the whole thing it and you
- 2:23walk and you check every day. I'm checking all the plants.
- 2:25It sounds like such a colossal pain in the rear end.
- 2:28And quite frankly, it is. However, if you love doing this
- 2:32the way I love doing it, it's worth all the effort and these
- 2:36small little other things will show up where you have to check
- 2:40them. Things coming out of the ground.
- 2:41Grubs. You know, there's a method to
- 2:44the madness of having the chickens here because the
- 2:46chickens go out and they dig all day long and they look for
- 2:49things that are disgusting and grubby in the ground and they
- 2:52will eat them. So that's good.
- 2:54They will take care of that problem for me.
- 2:56Now, the point of all of this is looking for those small things
- 3:00in our head is the same as looking for them on the farm.
- 3:03You cannot pass it by. You cannot say, OK, I'm not
- 3:07going to check my head today to see what thoughts I'm having and
- 3:10which ones I need to clean up. You cannot say I don't need a
- 3:14clean up crew in my head to help me get rid of these negative
- 3:17thoughts. You cannot say certain things
- 3:20that are, that are, you know, there and ignore them are not
- 3:26going to affect you. They will, they add up, they
- 3:29cause problems and they add up. And the most important thing
- 3:32that we can do for ourselves is to look for those small things,
- 3:36just like I do out here all the time on the farm.
- 3:39You know, it is, it is work, but it is the work we are meant to
- 3:44do as human beings. I am convinced of it.
- 3:46So we we could not sit and just have this.
- 3:49Absolutely, you know, 100% perfect life.
- 3:54That's not what it's meant to be.
- 3:56It's meant to be that we have the ups and downs.
- 3:59It's meant to be that we we rise to the occasion.
- 4:01It's meant to be that we become creative.
- 4:04It's meant to be that we do things differently.
- 4:07That's how we thrive. So accepting that that the all
- 4:11of this is part of it. It's a growth process that we
- 4:15work on ourselves from the inside out.
- 4:17That that inside out is a really big thing.
- 4:20When we accept that, all of a sudden things start to click and
- 4:24things start to change. So this is where inside out
- 4:27where it comes. Just like looking for Japanese
- 4:30beetles and setting traps, we have to set the traps for the
- 4:33negative thoughts. So if we say ahead of time,
- 4:36we're prepared. I know this situation bothers
- 4:38me. And when X shows up, then I will
- 4:41act Y. So we prepare before the emotion
- 4:45goes up, before we get too out of control.
- 4:48All of a sudden that makes a huge difference.
- 4:50Like if you know you have a trigger by finding out something
- 4:54about your business and you know, you're like all of a
- 4:58sudden you've been waiting for a proposal and you haven't heard.
- 5:02You haven't heard and you just don't know if somebody is like,
- 5:05you know, going to give it to you or not.
- 5:06When you say if this X shows up, if I if I get an answer and it's
- 5:10this, then I'm going to react this way.
- 5:13And if it's Y I'm going to react this way.
- 5:16And you give yourself this honest, honest reactional like
- 5:21framework, then you're going to feel so much better knowing you
- 5:25did this for yourself. So work on this, try this.
- 5:30I promise you it really helps. Now I'm going to go set some
- 5:33Japanese beetle traps. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:35you have a blessed day and I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:37Bye.
