- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Morri of the Yukon Football Coaches Show,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Huskies and ball State on Saturday three point thirty kick
- 0:06Speaker 1: at the Rent. Both teams one and two coming in.
- 0:09Speaker 1: They got there a little bit different ways. Obviously, you
- 0:12Speaker 1: come two heartbreaking overtime losses on the road, now getting
- 0:17Speaker 1: back home to some friendly confines. Let's talk about that, coach.
- 0:21Speaker 1: You know, people never downplay the difficulties of winning on
- 0:26Speaker 1: the road, and I think it comes into play and
- 0:30Speaker 1: those last two games you had. Syracuse kind of woke
- 0:33Speaker 1: up late in that game, and Delaware had a great
- 0:35Speaker 1: crowd for their first FBS home game. It ain't easy
- 0:39Speaker 1: to win on the road. We all know that.
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's hard. I mean, it's just another thing that you
- 0:45Speaker 2: have to deal with. The distraction. We always love being
- 0:47Speaker 2: able to come home and play at the Rent in
- 0:49Speaker 2: front of the people that support this team and you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: stay at our hotel and get into the rhythm and
- 0:56Speaker 2: the and the routine that you know has led to
- 0:59Speaker 2: some pretty decent success in the last few years at home.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So the Huskies. In a few moments when coaches finished up,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we're going to talk to our Brian Parham and natter, Churchy,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Let's go to the tight end first. Jim recruiting a
- 1:15Speaker 1: guy like him, a big dude six seven. When you
- 1:19Speaker 1: first saw him, what was your thought did you say, well,
- 1:22Speaker 1: maybe this guy can be a defensive end. He did
- 1:25Speaker 1: it in high school. When did you come to the
- 1:27Speaker 1: kind of thought process that, Okay, he's going to be
- 1:29Speaker 1: a tight end here.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well, the initial thought was that he'd be at offensive
- 1:33Speaker 2: tackle for us, and you know, we kind of recruited
- 1:37Speaker 2: him saying, hey, you know, we're going to play him
- 1:39Speaker 2: a tight end, but we think that eventually he could
- 1:41Speaker 2: grow into a tackle. But the development he's made is
- 1:44Speaker 2: a pass catcher and a guy out in space running
- 1:46Speaker 2: routes has really been impressive. And you know, we don't
- 1:49Speaker 2: look at him as a tackle anymore or ever as
- 1:52Speaker 2: a prospective tackle. We look at him as a really
- 1:54Speaker 2: good tight end threat, a guy that can block in
- 1:58Speaker 2: the run game, he can pass, per tack and now
- 2:00Speaker 2: you can get down the field and he can make catches,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and so we really love the way he's developed. He's
- 2:06Speaker 2: worked really hard at it.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And like a lot of guys on your team that
- 2:09Speaker 1: you have recruited and put together here in the last
- 2:11Speaker 1: couple of seasons he seems to have in me. In
- 2:15Speaker 1: talking with him, I felt like I had a great
- 2:16Speaker 1: spirit about him, and I think that matters. You talk
- 2:20Speaker 1: about this stuff a lot, and it's not just talk.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It really is meaningful to recruit the right kind of guys.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, character is huge, and he's got great personal character,
- 2:33Speaker 2: and he's got football character. He loves to play the game.
- 2:35Speaker 2: But he's a really dependable, hard working, consistent, trustworthy, good kid.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And it's really rewarding when you get a chance to
- 2:47Speaker 2: be around those guys and you watch them grow up
- 2:49Speaker 2: from these kids that come out of high school, wide
- 2:52Speaker 2: eyed parents dropping them off at the dorms, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: to really mature, just dependable kids. Man, they're not actually kids,
- 3:05Speaker 2: young men, and then they leave here as men ready
- 3:07Speaker 2: to attack the world. So it's one of the great
- 3:09Speaker 2: things about coaching college football is guys like not.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Her right, and Brian Parham has been in a few places, California, guy,
- 3:18Speaker 1: San Jose State, a little stop at Washington where you
- 3:22Speaker 1: obviously were a football player at one time. Now he's
- 3:25Speaker 1: here all the way across the country. I was impressed
- 3:28Speaker 1: with him. I tell you what. When he started talking,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I said, Man, this guy's got leadership qualities. I mean,
- 3:34Speaker 1: if I was on his team, I'd say let's get
- 3:37Speaker 1: behind that guy, because he was pretty impressive.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I agree. Played at Long Beach Pauli, one of the
- 3:43Speaker 2: premier historically high school programs in the country. Was coached
- 3:48Speaker 2: at San Jose State by Scott White, who worked for
- 3:50Speaker 2: me at UCLA. So I had some familiarity with the
- 3:53Speaker 2: guy who'd coached him, so I knew he was very
- 3:54Speaker 2: very well coached. Played at Washington with a tremendous group
- 3:58Speaker 2: of coaches. And then his energy is infectious, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 2: and his attention to detail and his enthusiasm for the game,
- 4:04Speaker 2: his determination. He's becoming a real, real dependable leader for us,
- 4:09Speaker 2: a really good player for us.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Or we let you go coach, just one big picture
- 4:15Speaker 1: piece of analysis, if you would, where are you at
- 4:18Speaker 1: three games in? Do you say we at nine more boys?
- 4:21Speaker 1: We got a long way to go? Or how do
- 4:24Speaker 1: you view this where you're at right now?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Say let's have a great Tuesday practice, a great day
- 4:30Speaker 2: of preparation. Let's put it in the bank, and then
- 4:32Speaker 2: let's go make some more money tomorrow. And so we
- 4:35Speaker 2: still have work to do on Tuesday, and we'll work
- 4:39Speaker 2: diligently to get to Saturday, and then on Saturday we'll
- 4:42Speaker 2: go out and we'll perform the best we can. And
- 4:44Speaker 2: you know, I've said it a lot, Mike. You just
- 4:46Speaker 2: got to concentrate on what's right in front of you
- 4:48Speaker 2: and that's what we're trying to do.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Okay. I like the advice. I'm going to follow it myself. No,
- 4:53Speaker 1: you're not the rest of the day at least all right,
- 5:00Speaker 1: appreciate you, Thanks so much. That's Jim Mora coming up.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Brian Parham and not her church. He will join us.
- 5:06Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on lear Field
