- 0:01Tad Eggleston: Good morning, everybody, and we're actually all still morning, right? You're… are you still in Mexico, or are you in El Salvador now?
- 0:08Maria Pena: I'm in El Salvador.
- 0:10Tad Eggleston: in El Salvador. So yes, we're all… All morning.
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: It's weird to have us all in the same time zone. Though, you have your background, so I, like, I never know where you are, because I always see the rolling surf and the palm trees.
- 0:28Maria Pena: Yeah, this is… that's my dream location, you know, doesn't quite look like that here.
- 0:34Tad Eggleston: Okay, so, so, yeah, welcome back to the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 Panels, where today we will discuss Love and Rockets Volume 2, Number 3. Hello, Maria. Hello, Marisol.
- 0:49Marisol: Where are you guys?
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: stewing?
- 0:51Maria Pena: Yeah, good, good. Recovering from a… from a terrible cold thing, probably COVID, who knows what, but anyway.
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:02Maria Pena: That's not what you're supposed to do on vacation, Maria. No, I know.
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, you already break the vacation rules because you take work with you, but you're not supposed
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: sick AND to work on vacation.
- 1:17Maria Pena: Yeah, I know, I know.
- 1:19Marisol: We're in Oaxaca for a week.
- 1:20Maria Pena: And most of it was sick… being sick.
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: Pardon?
- 1:27Maria Pena: So…
- 1:27Marisol: Well, I'm burned in Minnesota now, and it's so cold!
- 1:31Maria Pena: Oh, I must be freezing.
- 1:34Marisol: It is so cold over here today.
- 1:36Tad Eggleston: Minneapolis area?
- 1:38Marisol: Yup.
- 1:39Tad Eggleston: I should send you comic shop recommendations.
- 1:44Tad Eggleston: good ones.
- 1:47Tad Eggleston: Minneapolis has a, has a good, comic scene. You should… should make a point of going up with me for, Insert Name Zine Fest next year.
- 1:56Marisol: Yeah, I need to start checking out their comics around here.
- 1:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, damn.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: They've got, they've got a, impressive indie comic scene.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: And a number of bigger creators live in the Minneapolis area. It's like, Minneapolis is kind of like the mini Portland.
- 2:13Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's fun. Portland is currently the U.S. comics mecca.
- 2:17Tad Eggleston: New York used to be, and still has.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: the skeleton, like, because there are people that never left New York, but most of the…
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: the younger generation, the ones that… that never went to New York, because, like, New York became the comics mecca because both Marvel and DC were there.
- 2:39Maria Pena: NBC, yeah.
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: Right, so, like, and back in the era before fax machines, before, like, the closer you were, the easier it was to get your artwork in.
- 2:51Tad Eggleston: But in the internet era,
- 2:57Tad Eggleston: And with DC having moved to Burbank,
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: things kind of split, but then a lot of people discovered Portland.
- 3:09Tad Eggleston: And it became kind of the… the, the, the creator-chosen mecca?
- 3:16Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 3:17Tad Eggleston: Lots of people from Ohio out in Portland, people from Chicago out in Portland.
- 3:25Tad Eggleston: But I've noticed that there's kind of a smaller…
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: but very Portland-esque scene in Minneapolis as well. So…
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I like comic scenes in different cities in the U.S, and I need to discover more of them. It seems like they all have little… little scenes, and they're getting better at putting out
- 3:47Tad Eggleston: Like, Milwaukee has had their own independent con for, like, 4 years now.
- 3:52Marisol: I know.
- 3:55Tad Eggleston: Like, they're all… they're all starting to do, like, the… let's get the local creators together for the weekend so people can come see our wares.
- 4:04Tad Eggleston: And I want to go to more of those.
- 4:07Tad Eggleston: Because that's… that's where guys like the brothers started. You know, the brothers were doing cons.
- 4:14Tad Eggleston: You know, little… little tiny zine cons is where they were found by Phanographics.
- 4:21Marisol: I'm like…
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: I guess they also sent… sent their issue 1 up there, because they… they'd seen something else from Phanographics, but… but, like…
- 4:31Tad Eggleston: Phantographics and Drawn and Quarterly are, like, the… the…
- 4:39Tad Eggleston: The level of publisher that, like.
- 4:42Tad Eggleston: Scout those, those minicons, just looking for,
- 4:47Tad Eggleston: This person might be worth paying attention to.
- 4:50Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:52Tad Eggleston: It's always fun to find that… Random thing.
- 4:58Tad Eggleston: That's just really cool.
- 5:02Tad Eggleston: It's also where you find the most completely screwing around with the medium. You know, I've found comics that are… are…
- 5:09Tad Eggleston: like, Mobius strips?
- 5:11Tad Eggleston: Where it's like the… you go through it in circles that go inside and outside the paper. I've found comics that are… what are those things that you have?
- 5:22Tad Eggleston: in… in, like, elementary school, where… where… where they're folded into the… the four corners that you open… Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. …and pick the thing.
- 5:31Marisol: things. I've seen people make comics based on that, so it's like a choose-your-own-adventure comic and a little…
- 5:38Maria Pena: Sounds awesome.
- 5:40Tad Eggleston: It does.
- 5:41Tad Eggleston: But it's the type of thing that, like, happens way more with DIY than anybody, like, producing it, producing it.
- 5:49Maria Pena: It cost a fortune to produce, so… Yeah, as opposed to, like.
- 5:57Tad Eggleston: 20 bucks at Kinko's, and 20 hours of folding them all.
- 6:02Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 6:04Maria Pena: Well, and it's a very small run, so… Right, right.
- 6:07Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 6:08Maria Pena: Yes.
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: So, anyway… Lovin' rockets…
- 6:13Maria Pena: Yes.
- 6:13Tad Eggleston: For 3, I love this cover.
- 6:16Maria Pena: Yeah, great cover. Is it, like, Halloween-ish or something, or…
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: It kind of feels like that.
- 6:23Marisol: Yeah.
- 6:23Maria Pena: does.
- 6:26Tad Eggleston: I don't remember if there was anything that specifically makes it Halloween.
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: It does look like it came out in September.
- 6:33Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 6:34Tad Eggleston: fall-ish issue.
- 6:36Maria Pena: To me.
- 6:37Marisol: Yeah, I was gonna ask, when did this come out? Because maybe…
- 6:41Marisol: It is a Halloween issue without actually, you know, being.
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: Right, right. I love that.
- 6:47Maria Pena: the… The foreground silhouette, tree silhouette, and then, you know, the walking is very cinematic.
- 6:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:56Maria Pena: Yeah, so…
- 7:00Tad Eggleston: And then… then we've got our… our ad for a Vertigo comic.
- 7:05Tad Eggleston: because, that's what Betta was doing as well, because Beta was just working, like, Crazy at this time.
- 7:14Maria Pena: Of course, I think Natalia was young, so he was probably paying for diapers.
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: Neighbors are expensive. That's what I should ask him next time. You're… and I forget if it's in this one or in another, like, he has comics that involve Natalia as, like, a baby.
- 7:33Maria Pena: There is one in this way.
- 7:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's in this one, yeah.
- 7:36Maria Pena: Yeah, I don'.
- 7:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so I gotta wonder if, like, did you become insanely prolific because of the price of time?
- 7:44Maria Pena: I needed the money!
- 7:48Tad Eggleston: And I love that he was a co-winner of Time Magazine's Next Wave Innovators Storytellers.
- 7:57Tad Eggleston: I did not know that.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: I'm certain he deserved it, and I kinda wonder who he co-won it with.
- 8:03Maria Pena: It may be hymen.
- 8:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's possible.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: And then we've got a,
- 8:11Tad Eggleston: a frog mouth and Maggie story. I…
- 8:14Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 8:16Tad Eggleston: How haunting is this picture of, of.
- 8:19Maria Pena: Easy.
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: is Etho.
- 8:22Maria Pena: Yeah, I love that panel, I think that's.
- 8:24Tad Eggleston: naked with the fly swatter, and you can't see the top of her head or the bottom of her legs. It's just like…
- 8:33Marisol: From.
- 8:34Tad Eggleston: The nose to the knee.
- 8:36Maria Pena: She's just lit by a shaft of light.
- 8:39Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 8:39Maria Pena: I love the drop shadow behind her, it's great.
- 8:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, no, I didn't even see the shadow behind her. Oh, wow, yeah.
- 8:53Maria Pena: Yes.
- 8:54Maria Pena: So that's the…
- 8:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's good panel.
- 8:58Maria Pena: I'm kind of, you know, I have my eye on that one, yeah.
- 9:03Tad Eggleston: That's a crazy good panel.
- 9:07Tad Eggleston: And then, weird guy… Blown out air conditioner.
- 9:14Tad Eggleston: A different weird guy.
- 9:15Maria Pena: As a super in a…
- 9:20Marisol: Fixing everyone's problems.
- 9:23Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 9:24Maria Pena: At and from what's being annoying.
- 9:28Maria Pena: Oh.
- 9:31Tad Eggleston: This Izzy is almost dishunting.
- 9:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: Is it… is he with the fan?
- 9:38Tad Eggleston: And the cigarette.
- 9:39Maria Pena: Just backlit.
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: And why isn't Izzy wearing any clothes? Is it just because it's hot, or is…
- 9:47Marisol: Maybe?
- 9:48Marisol: I'm never entirely sure nowadays with Izzy.
- 9:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, Izzy's…
- 9:52Marisol: Guys?
- 9:54Marisol: I like this angle of the old man.
- 9:57Tad Eggleston: with his cat.
- 9:59Tad Eggleston: Looking down, about the dog.
- 10:04Maria Pena: Yeah. The dog that he hasn't seen yet.
- 10:07Marisol: Just to restore exists.
- 10:10Maria Pena: And then it tells you…
- 10:11Tad Eggleston: It gives us the flashback, yeah.
- 10:14Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:15Marisol: There's a… there's a mythical dog in Salvadorian.
- 10:19Maria Pena: mythology called El Cadejo.
- 10:23Maria Pena: Which is, like, this devil dog. I don't know what it does, I can't remember anymore, but, you know, it's got, like, red eyes.
- 10:30Maria Pena: He appears to you at night in the, in the… In the countryside.
- 10:36Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 10:37Maria Pena: So that looks a bit like that. It's very spooky for me.
- 10:43Maria Pena: And Mrs. Galindo's the one that they all think it's, she's a witch, right?
- 10:47Marisol: Witch, right?
- 10:53Tad Eggleston: And it turns out that they're breaking in to the crazy boyfriend's house and pool.
- 10:58Marisol: Yep. Because of course they are.
- 11:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 11:01Maria Pena: Of course they are. Because that's what Frogmouth does, and then she goes and screws these other guy.
- 11:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, that, then, then,
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: Why can't I remember his name? We get his name, don't we?
- 11:18Tad Eggleston: Sid.
- 11:18Maria Pena: Reno, right?
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: Reno. Oh, yeah, the Reno. It's Sid's house.
- 11:23Maria Pena: See?
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, so, so yeah, Frogmass flirting with, with…
- 11:28Tad Eggleston: Maggie entirely, but then she goes into the house with Reno, and Maggie slips away, and when she comes back, Frogmouth's doing Reno, cause…
- 11:36Marisol: Yep.
- 11:36Tad Eggleston: Well, that's fraud.
- 11:37Marisol: Scheduled.
- 11:38Maria Pena: That's what she does, yeah.
- 11:40Tad Eggleston: And then Sid comes home with his wife, so Maggie's like, I am outta here.
- 11:47Marisol: Yep, bye.
- 11:49Maria Pena: I love that, panel at the bottom of page 11, with easy, it's just see what I'm doing, and I'm cutting cantaloupe, what else? But she looks.
- 11:59Marisol: That might be my favorite one, just cause it's so…
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: So…
- 12:04Marisol: So ominous, and…
- 12:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:06Marisol: Oh, like, Izzy, you were holding that knife like you're about to murder somebody, what are you doing?
- 12:12Marisol: No, just cutting up fruit. It's fine.
- 12:15Marisol: No problem. That's what I've been doing.
- 12:18Tad Eggleston: No, I also, like… the… The kid in the…
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: wind… in front of her in the car, and the old man looking through the window. I mean, this is definitely a…
- 12:35Tad Eggleston: an issue where Jaime just threw a ton of…
- 12:40Maria Pena: I mean, you, like…
- 12:41Tad Eggleston: You almost know that they're… well, I just mean that you almost know that every one of these characters is fully developed in his head.
- 12:48Marisol: Hmm.
- 12:49Tad Eggleston: just, like… Way, way too interesting.
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: Not to be.
- 13:01Maria Pena: But it's also, you know, like, he's… these women are getting looked at by all these guys.
- 13:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:08Maria Pena: It's just…
- 13:09Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 13:10Maria Pena: They'd be, you know, gawking at them.
- 13:12Maria Pena: And it's this oppressive thing, like…
- 13:15Maria Pena: when, Frogmouth is walking through the motel, and everybody's just, like, drooling.
- 13:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:22Maria Pena: then Maggie's the same, you know? They're the same. We've ended up… Presently being,
- 13:28Maria Pena: You know, sort of… Objectified, so it's… it's really interesting.
- 13:37Maria Pena: I mean, you know, nobody looks that easy that way, now that she walks around… It's mystery, but…
- 13:43Maria Pena: Maggie and Frogmouth, it's like, they're…
- 13:46Maria Pena: It's, like, promote this, like, me and Maggie or something.
- 13:51Maria Pena: And they've both been with race, so there's something about it.
- 13:57Maria Pena: I think they're, like, alter egos, in a way, I don't know.
- 14:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, there's definitely an element of that.
- 14:03Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: Then we've got the shadow of the dog.
- 14:10Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:11Marisol: ominous.
- 14:13Maria Pena: Yeah, I got it.
- 14:15Marisol: I love that shadow, how it's just extending out, but…
- 14:20Marisol: the body, at least to me, I don't know, the body looks much more solid and dark.
- 14:26Tad Eggleston: Than the, like, shadow of the legs do.
- 14:29Marisol: I think that's cool.
- 14:31Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 14:33Maria Pena: Oh, this story, man.
- 14:35Marisol: Yeah.
- 14:37Maria Pena: I was like… I didn't expect that, the ending list, so…
- 14:44Tad Eggleston: Well, I think it continues where each page is essentially a year.
- 14:49Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 14:50Marisol: Is that it?
- 14:53Marisol: I was confused at how quick this… Timeline went here.
- 15:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think that was part of the conceit.
- 15:03Maria Pena: each.
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: Page was a year.
- 15:08Maria Pena: Yeah, and the kids,
- 15:10Maria Pena: Oh, he's come back a hero and all this from the war, and then she goes.
- 15:16Tad Eggleston: Nice to see him.
- 15:16Maria Pena: Oh, man, and he's like…
- 15:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 15:21Maria Pena: That was, that was really like, oh, Jesus.
- 15:27Maria Pena: Included.
- 15:28Tad Eggleston: Well, in this, this last image with, with…
- 15:31Tad Eggleston: With her just walking away is just haunting.
- 15:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:37Maria Pena: Yes, like, all her hopes are dashed, and…
- 15:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:41Marisol: You had to see him come back.
- 15:44Marisol: Mutilated, essentially.
- 15:46Marisol: No arms, no legs, one eye missing.
- 15:51Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:51Marisol: That's up everywhere.
- 15:54Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 15:58Maria Pena: There we go that, huh?
- 16:00Maria Pena: We can't…
- 16:01Tad Eggleston: our tale of embezzlement and craziness.
- 16:07Maria Pena: Yeah, and sort of, corruption in the…
- 16:13Maria Pena: Manufacturing, you think?
- 16:15Maria Pena: Oh, that lady's big, man.
- 16:18Maria Pena: In the… in this month.
- 16:22Tad Eggleston: I like the monkey.
- 16:28Maria Pena: So that's that guy's wife, and she's got a big…
- 16:34Maria Pena: She's lost her husband, lost a kid.
- 16:40Tad Eggleston: They're mean to this kid here.
- 16:42Marisol: Yeah…
- 16:44Maria Pena: Yeah, they're like… We found you, and we stole your pants, and how are those shoes?
- 16:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 16:50Maria Pena: Not very nice.
- 16:52Marisol: No, it's just… why? Why are you like this? Leave him alone!
- 16:57Maria Pena: Give the poor thing back his pants!
- 17:01Maria Pena: And… Meanwhile, his daughter, and… Just trying to get…
- 17:11Maria Pena: The company to take some responsibility, nothing's happening.
- 17:15Tad Eggleston: I do love the old man on the chair on the butler's back.
- 17:21Maria Pena: Yeah, and he still looks very clean, the butler, you know, he's still got his tie on and everything.
- 17:26Tad Eggleston: I, I think, I think… well, he loosened it. He loosened it.
- 17:29Maria Pena: Yeah, oh yeah, it's rid loose, yeah.
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: Took off his sport coat.
- 17:35Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 17:36Tad Eggleston: I mean, there's only so far you can go as a butler.
- 17:40Maria Pena: This is true.
- 17:40Tad Eggleston: This is… this is… this is, like, slummin' it.
- 17:45Tad Eggleston: But I love the silhouette sliding down the mountain with the chair on his back.
- 17:50Tad Eggleston: Apologizing.
- 17:52Maria Pena: Sorry, sir.
- 17:55Marisol: Like, the… what a butler, Jesus. Protecting…
- 18:00Maria Pena: oil.
- 18:01Marisol: Carrying you in your chair, on his back.
- 18:06Maria Pena: Through the jungle.
- 18:08Marisol: Yes. Oh my god.
- 18:13Tad Eggleston: When I love, even in this last panel, you can see that he's still in the chair.
- 18:17Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 18:18Tad Eggleston: Can't see the butler at all. You can still see that he's still in the chair.
- 18:23Maria Pena: And I love that panel with the… with those tall sticks things.
- 18:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 18:29Maria Pena: The level of detail in that is just… Nuts.
- 18:33Maria Pena: And this is the thing, that Beto's doing all these different,
- 18:37Maria Pena: stories and stuff, and he still has time to put all these extra work, like, somebody else would have gone, fuck it, I'm just gonna, you know, just make this. But he's like, put all that extra in there. It's just mad.
- 18:56Tad Eggleston: And then we've got the high soft lisp.
- 19:01Maria Pena: So this is, when,
- 19:03Maria Pena: Petra and Fritz were teenagers. Teenagers. It looks like about 17 or something.
- 19:13Maria Pena: And.
- 19:16Marisol: One, two St. Jewish boys.
- 19:19Maria Pena: Yeah, there's… Victor already was a bit of a… Brown, growing up.
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 19:29Maria Pena: Man, she makes… Tell your family I'll fuck them up too, bitch.
- 19:37Maria Pena: And, yeah.
- 19:44Tad Eggleston: Brits is already, like…
- 19:48Maria Pena: It'll.
- 19:48Tad Eggleston: Anybody that'll pay attention.
- 19:51Maria Pena: Hmm…
- 19:52Marisol: Oh, Fritzy.
- 19:57Maria Pena: Yep.
- 20:02Maria Pena: And this older guy gives her a lift home, thankfully doesn't take advantage.
- 20:07Maria Pena: And it's time to move again.
- 20:12Tad Eggleston: This is a great book.
- 20:14Maria Pena: Oh, that pretty… I love it, I got that, yeah.
- 20:17Tad Eggleston: Jessica Abel.
- 20:19Maria Pena: Every time I go to Mexico, I come back home, and I find it, like, I'm gonna read that again. There'll be some details, because it's all, you know, based in Mexico City.
- 20:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:31Maria Pena: And she's very faithful in her, you know.
- 20:35Maria Pena: Mind you, that was a long time ago, this thing.
- 20:38Maria Pena: This was funny.
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: I love this.
- 20:42Maria Pena: Roy and Stigmata get, get, get sort of… I don't know.
- 20:47Tad Eggleston: The neuterbank Primer.
- 20:50Maria Pena: lasered or something by this ship, and you know, at least I can see your eyes now, because they both have, you know.
- 20:56Maria Pena: Hair that covers their eyes. Obviously, they've lost all their hair.
- 21:02Tad Eggleston: I do love this Natalia short at the end.
- 21:05Maria Pena: Natalia one, yeah.
- 21:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah, where, where, where the monster is, is, is… Sentient.
- 21:13Maria Pena: Yes.
- 21:13Tad Eggleston: Initially, you say, you ain't so tough. Oh, oh, ow. Dear God. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my God!
- 21:21Marisol: Oh my god.
- 21:22Tad Eggleston: So raw.
- 21:23Marisol: Cute.
- 21:25Maria Pena: Natalia's…
- 21:26Marisol: Going to town with it.
- 21:29Tad Eggleston: Natalia's being a typical toddler.
- 21:32Maria Pena: Yep.
- 21:34Marisol: the toys around, as one does.
- 21:37Maria Pena: Mmm.
- 21:39Maria Pena: Yes, obviously, Beto saw her, you know, kind of destroying a toy, but it's still, like, a funny little story.
- 21:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 21:49Marisol: I mean, it's cute.
- 21:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this was such a… this was…
- 21:53Tad Eggleston: A mostly fun… fun issue, though.
- 21:58Tad Eggleston: You know, you're starting to get some insight into Fritz and Petra.
- 22:05Maria Pena: - bye.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: And where, where they come from.
- 22:11Tad Eggleston: Petra was definitely the more popular one when they were young.
- 22:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's just that vulnerable kind of… Fritz was… Right.
- 22:30Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 22:31Maria Pena: And of course, you know, she comes across as…
- 22:35Maria Pena: But we… I don't know, childlike because of a lisp, or whatever.
- 22:40Marisol: Right?
- 22:42Tad Eggleston: She would attract a certain type of guy.
- 22:46Tad Eggleston: Me for the unknown, the story itself is…
- 22:50Tad Eggleston: Kinda all over the place. It reminds me a lot of, like,
- 22:55Tad Eggleston: a low-budget action thriller, but man, does… does Beto draw the hell out of it.
- 23:04Maria Pena: Yes.
- 23:05Marisol: Hmm.
- 23:09Maria Pena: Yeah, I love that fat lady.
- 23:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 23:13Maria Pena: Mohawk Kid.
- 23:19Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 23:24Tad Eggleston: Are they on a houseboat?
- 23:28Marisol: Maybe?
- 23:32Marisol: I couldn't quite tell.
- 23:34Tad Eggleston: Well, this just looks kind of like a pier here. That definitely looks like water.
- 23:40Maria Pena: Yeah, I think if you look at the top left…
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: And the top, yeah, they're on a houseboat.
- 23:46Marisol: Hmm.
- 23:47Maria Pena: It's on the bank of the Bayou.
- 23:56Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 23:56Tad Eggleston: You can feel the Archie… Influence in some of these panels, too.
- 24:05Maria Pena: Yeah, that mouth isn't it as well.
- 24:07Tad Eggleston: Right. Fair enough.
- 24:08Maria Pena: Or when you come up.
- 24:09Tad Eggleston: Okay. Yeah.
- 24:11Marisol: Ugh.
- 24:11Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 24:15Maria Pena: I love that, that top left panel there that…
- 24:19Maria Pena: I love all the different textures it's got there. It's got the black, and it's got the foreground. That's kind of…
- 24:27Maria Pena: I think the foliage is, I gotta focus fully just…
- 24:31Marisol: My favorite Beto might be this 5-panel.
- 24:37Tad Eggleston: Just because the… the… You're right, the different textures in that first panel, the… the…
- 24:46Tad Eggleston: The action of the bottom two panels on the right.
- 24:51Tad Eggleston: And the expressions on the top two panels.
- 24:54Maria Pena: Yeah. Are just…
- 24:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's like, all the things that make great cartooning.
- 25:03Maria Pena: And then…
- 25:04Tad Eggleston: these 5 panels.
- 25:05Maria Pena: And even the bottom panel, like, it cuts back to, you know, what they're escaping from.
- 25:12Tad Eggleston: Right, right, where the gutter is used to change the scene.
- 25:18Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 25:19Tad Eggleston: This… this page.
- 25:21Tad Eggleston: is just…
- 25:24Marisol: It is a good one.
- 25:26Tad Eggleston: You could teach a class on this page.
- 25:30Maria Pena: Totally.
- 25:41Marisol: I'd have to say my favorite,
- 25:45Marisol: Where is it? I just had it. My favorite pedal is…
- 25:50Marisol: What age is this? 26, I think?
- 25:55Marisol: What Petra's kicking ass.
- 25:57Maria Pena: Oh yeah, that's good.
- 26:01Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:02Tad Eggleston: Both of them…
- 26:05Marisol: Yeah.
- 26:05Tad Eggleston: Or is one better than the other?
- 26:10Marisol: I like both of them, just cause…
- 26:12Tad Eggleston: The two ass-kicking panels?
- 26:15Marisol: Yeah, in the first one, you see the ferocity in… Petra attacking.
- 26:22Marisol: And all the lines around her, and her hair's blown back a bit.
- 26:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, for that matter, the four panels is also a master class, because it's like…
- 26:33Tad Eggleston: Here, you insulted me, and then we go from 0 to 60, to just pounding, to, wimpy little bitch.
- 26:47Marisol: Didn't even let her get one hidden.
- 26:49Tad Eggleston: Right. What a champion.
- 26:50Marisol: Right.
- 26:54Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 26:55Marisol: Yep.
- 26:55Tad Eggleston: And the guys in the background just going.
- 27:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, man. In all three panels. You've got at least one male in the background, looking on and going.
- 27:07Marisol: Whoa, yeah.
- 27:13Tad Eggleston: Remind me not to fuck with her.
- 27:18Maria Pena: in the second one.
- 27:19Marisol: Where she elbows the… the guy.
- 27:23Marisol: Who she's been talking with, right in the face.
- 27:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 27:27Marisol: Yeah, she's rearing back for another punch.
- 27:29Tad Eggleston: Who's trying to pull her off of him.
- 27:32Marisol: Yep.
- 27:34Tad Eggleston: So it may or may not even be an accident that she's elbowing him in the face.
- 27:39Maria Pena: Yeah, she's like, get off my ear.
- 27:42Maria Pena: I have a job to finish, get out of here!
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 27:46Tad Eggleston: Well, or she's just in such a frenzy, she doesn't know it's him.
- 27:50Tad Eggleston: Sure. I think it's one of the, you know…
- 27:54Tad Eggleston: At this point, it's like, yep, just another combatant.
- 28:07Maria Pena: My Beto panel would have to be… I guess, you know, I do love that.
- 28:13Maria Pena: That… that paddle would be…
- 28:15Maria Pena: The photograph of the guy in the chair, and all that, the first time alone.
- 28:21Maria Pena: but also that other panel that I mentioned with the… the tall…
- 28:28Maria Pena: sticks. I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be trees, or…
- 28:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, except they're on the wrong continent, I think… I'd almost think that it was bamboo?
- 28:43Maria Pena: Well, there's no foliage whatsoever. Bamboo has foliage, so… I'm not sure, it looks very prehistoric.
- 28:51Marisol: anywhere, I think. It's also super invasive.
- 28:55Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 28:57Maria Pena: Nice.
- 29:00Marisol: Can't get rid of it.
- 29:03Tad Eggleston: It's good for making paper, though.
- 29:05Marisol: -
- 29:08Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 29:09Maria Pena: I just think the level of effort he went into.
- 29:12Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 29:13Maria Pena: Kennel.
- 29:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:15Maria Pena: Crazy.
- 29:17Maria Pena: And, you know, there's… even there's design in the distances between the horizontal lines on each thing, like, there's a pattern that's very pleasing to the eye. Like, it's not all the same distance.
- 29:31Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 29:31Maria Pena: as gaps, so you get a bit of a pattern of light and darkness. I mean, it's just great.
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:38Tad Eggleston: No, it's… it's… it's a really, really impressive.
- 29:42Tad Eggleston: panel.
- 29:46Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 29:47Maria Pena: And… Bye?
- 29:51Maria Pena: Okay, thanks.
- 29:52Tad Eggleston: So many good Jaime panels.
- 29:56Marisol: I know mine for sure is… Izzy with the knife cutting up kiddo.
- 30:04Maria Pena: Oh, he's done very well with the…
- 30:06Tad Eggleston: Cut… cutting cantaloupe. What do you think I was doing?
- 30:10Marisol: That's what I'd be doing?
- 30:12Tad Eggleston: Because everybody holds a knife that way when they're cutting cantaloupe.
- 30:16Maria Pena: No worries.
- 30:18Tad Eggleston: so well!
- 30:22Maria Pena: And that panel on the left of that… of the knife panel, I think it's really nice.
- 30:31Maria Pena: With the silhouette of Maggie in the motel, and everything's quiet.
- 30:36Maria Pena: That's quite nice.
- 30:39Tad Eggleston: Is that one yours, or…
- 30:41Maria Pena: Can be, yeah, because I really like the one with Izzy and the fly sweater, but I think you really like that one, so I'll give it to you.
- 30:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I haven't decided if that's gonna be my one.
- 30:53Maria Pena: Oh, okay. Well, if it's not that… that really…
- 30:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 30:58Maria Pena: I'll give you the Izzy and the fly sweater.
- 31:01Maria Pena: Okay.
- 31:01Tad Eggleston: Because… Oh, I love that one, but I was still debating.
- 31:07Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 31:11Maria Pena: Yeah, I know that jumped at me, it was like…
- 31:13Tad Eggleston: I have a feeling that we're all gonna wind up with Izzy panels.
- 31:17Tad Eggleston: Yes. Yeah.
- 31:20Tad Eggleston: Because… because I think the one that is mine is the Izzy and the Fan.
- 31:26Maria Pena: Okay, yeah, hmm.
- 31:31Maria Pena: He's a star in this one, yeah.
- 31:33Tad Eggleston: So, so, so Izzy… Izzy's in, like, 5 panels, and 3 of them are the ones that we picked.
- 31:43Marisol: Ugh.
- 31:45Marisol: Hello?
- 31:46Maria Pena: The lonely panels, you know, like, when she's looking for Vivian, and she turns a corner, and there's this big wall, and a fire hydrant.
- 31:55Maria Pena: Hi, she's going on Vivian, and… Maggie's looking for Vivian.
- 32:01Maria Pena: And…
- 32:02Maria Pena: And the one with the motel, you know, there's something lovely about those really lonely panels. It makes you feeling a little bit lost, and…
- 32:11Maria Pena: Alone, so it's… he's always, you know, she has that…
- 32:16Maria Pena: It's part of who Maggie is, you know.
- 32:19Tad Eggleston: now.
- 32:20Maria Pena: Yeah, so it's… It's page 6.
- 32:24Maria Pena: Yeah, that top left.
- 32:27Marisol: No?
- 32:28Maria Pena: Six.
- 32:31Maria Pena: Top left. You learn their own, their own way, learn their own ways. No, page, page 6.
- 32:37Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 32:39Maria Pena: See that BBN title, top left?
- 32:42Tad Eggleston: Damn. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:44Maria Pena: Yeah, that's… like, there's so many little panels like that with Maggie, where she's…
- 32:50Maria Pena: Just alone in a big space.
- 32:52Marisol: Yeah.
- 32:53Maria Pena: And… hmm.
- 32:55Maria Pena: And I think, that's part of…
- 32:59Maria Pena: Maggie's kind of feeling a bit lost with everything.
- 33:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 33:07Tad Eggleston: So good.
- 33:09Maria Pena: Hmm.
- 33:10Tad Eggleston: So good.
- 33:11Tad Eggleston: Like, I'm impressed that we haven't fallen into Chris Farley show territory.
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: And 70-some-odd episodes of the Love & Rockets Book Club.
- 33:23Tad Eggleston: We wound up…
- 33:26Maria Pena: I was…
- 33:26Tad Eggleston: getting there with our third episode, talking about Jonah Hex on the Pulp Blotter book club, where it's like… and we just started the Chris Farley show, where it's like…
- 33:38Tad Eggleston: Maggie, shouting in the distance.
- 33:43Tad Eggleston: That was cool.
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: Remember that time where you're on the corner?
- 33:49Tad Eggleston: By the fire hydrant?
- 33:52Tad Eggleston: And he called for Vivian?
- 33:54Tad Eggleston: That was awesome!
- 34:00Tad Eggleston: Maria, do you have a Saturday Night Live background at all, or did that not reach you in Australia?
- 34:09Maria Pena: No, not really. I mean, it's… we know about it, but, you know, I think, you know, you stay
- 34:17Maria Pena: enough.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: One…
- 34:18Maria Pena: Somebody must have it on, but…
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: Probably the two… the two bits that Chris Farley was best known for were… Van down by the river.
- 34:27Tad Eggleston: Where he's a motivational speaker, who, like, he would talk about, like, don't behave like this, or you'll wind up like me, living in a van down by the river.
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: But then the other was the Chris Farley show, where he'd have people on and, like.
- 34:45Tad Eggleston: at, like, Paul McCartney was on, and there was… one of the questions he asked was,
- 34:51Tad Eggleston: Remember that time when there was all that stuff, and, like, we played the record backwards, and stuff in the pictures, and everybody thought you were dead?
- 35:03Maria Pena: Oh, God.
- 35:04Tad Eggleston: Paul's like…
- 35:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah… well, you… you weren't really dead, were you? No, no, Chris, I'm… I'm… Oh, I'm so stupid! Oh, no, it's okay, Chris!
- 35:16Marisol: Oh, man.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: You know… He'd ask people if they'd seen the Terminator.
- 35:24Maria Pena: Whether they were in it or not, just because it was awesome.
- 35:29Maria Pena: Oh, okay.
- 35:31Tad Eggleston: So…
- 35:32Maria Pena: Just making conversation, like…
- 35:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, just like he, he, essentially the, the, the… the…
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: conceit was he'd get so starstruck that all he could do was tell them about the things that he thought were awesome, rather than… rather than actually, like, ask questions.
- 35:56Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think the first… the first question to Paul McCartney was, remember when you were in the Beatles? Yeah, yeah, Chris, I do. That was awesome!
- 36:08Marisol: Oh, man.
- 36:11Tad Eggleston: And Chris Farley being Chris Farley, he sold it so much better than I do.
- 36:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, I can't think of anybody else that would have sold that bit the way he did.
- 36:22Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 36:23Tad Eggleston: But.
- 36:24Maria Pena: Okay.
- 36:24Tad Eggleston: But like I said, I sometimes think that one of the greatest strengths of Love and Rockets is that we're 70-some-odd issues in, and we find new and interesting things
- 36:34Tad Eggleston: to say, rather than just, like, Jaime and Gilbert, good.
- 36:39Maria Pena: Yep. I hope so, yeah.
- 36:42Tad Eggleston: I think so.
- 36:43Marisol: I feel like the conversations…
- 36:46Tad Eggleston: have something.
- 36:49Tad Eggleston: to them still.
- 36:52Tad Eggleston: I haven't found myself bored. I hope you guys haven't.
- 36:56Marisol: Huh, absolutely not. There's…
- 36:58Marisol: There's always something new, I think, to talk about with each issue. Yes, the artwork is amazing. Yes, the story is, like, fun, or sad, or very relatable in many instances.
- 37:15Tad Eggleston: Well, and we haven't gotten deep into it yet, but I feel like we will soon. This new Responsible Maggie.
- 37:22Tad Eggleston: is…
- 37:23Marisol: Yeah.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: And part of it being weird is you can tell that she's still, like… Not feeling 100%
- 37:34Tad Eggleston: It's like she fell into this role where she has a job and responsibilities, and she does it.
- 37:44Maria Pena: Yep.
- 37:44Tad Eggleston: But you're not certain that even she knows quite how it happened?
- 37:49Tad Eggleston: We certainly didn't see… we didn't see her apply for a job, we didn't, suddenly she was just an apartment manager.
- 37:55Tad Eggleston: So, you know, all of that happened off-screen, but, like, there's… there's almost a,
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: almost a feeling that it happened off-screen for Maggie, too.
- 38:07Marisol: Yeah.
- 38:08Maria Pena: Right. But she woke up and she found herself in.
- 38:12Tad Eggleston: You know,
- 38:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, we commented some on it in the last couple of issues, where she was at the bar talking to Hopi, and, like, you could tell that, like.
- 38:25Tad Eggleston: She's like, wait a minute, Hopi's a bartender and whatnot, and I'm…
- 38:32Tad Eggleston: I'm the sad person at the bar? How did this happen?
- 38:36Maria Pena: The butterfly.
- 38:37Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 38:39Marisol: Oh, man.
- 38:40Tad Eggleston: And all this comes to me because I'm looking at this panel, Bottom of page 6.
- 38:46Tad Eggleston: Just the way she looks as she's taking her first sip from the drink.
- 38:52Maria Pena: Yeah.
- 38:54Marisol: Where it's like, oh yeah.
- 38:56Tad Eggleston: I'm at this party.
- 38:58Tad Eggleston: That seems to just be me.
- 39:01Tad Eggleston: But there's booze.
- 39:02Maria Pena: This girl is hidden.
- 39:05Tad Eggleston: Why are you apologizing to me?
- 39:08Marisol: Yep.
- 39:12Maria Pena: That's another thing, like…
- 39:14Maria Pena: that before, there were all these men gawking at her, at both of them. Now… now she's thought, Frogmouth.
- 39:23Maria Pena: Kind of objectifying her, you know, it's just… poor me.
- 39:32Maria Pena: It's just, like, this sort of object of lust for everyone.
- 39:36Tad Eggleston: Well, and it's also kind of weird that, like, just as she starts to figure out that Frogmouth is lusting at her, and she kind of thinks about it, and as she flirts a little bit with
- 39:52Tad Eggleston: Reno… I mean, that's a very flirtatious smile there.
- 39:58Maria Pena: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:59Tad Eggleston: But then, like, she goes and looks at the exercise equipment and the weird room, and when she comes back from the weird room, it's like.
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 40:09Maria Pena: I guess they're gonna do each other rather than me. Yeah, right.
- 40:15Maria Pena: She ends up, yeah… Alone, and, like, okay.
- 40:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:24Maria Pena: And no Hopi, which is the…
- 40:26Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:27Maria Pena: Which was the motivation, too.
- 40:29Tad Eggleston: Right. Hopi's gonna be here. Yeah, right.
- 40:35Tad Eggleston: And actually, I just noticed that you can see them starting in the background here.
- 40:41Maria Pena: Oh, yay.
- 40:41Marisol: Yep.
- 40:42Maria Pena: Taking her out.
- 40:44Marisol: Through the open door.
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:48Tad Eggleston: So, so, like…
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: They didn't even, like, let her get completely out of the room before they got at it.
- 40:56Maria Pena: There.
- 41:00Tad Eggleston: Just… crazy.
- 41:07Tad Eggleston: The shadows are really great.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: Both of them had lots of fun with Shadows this issue.
- 41:22Tad Eggleston: That's an awfully ominous-looking swimming pool.
- 41:25Marisol: Yes.
- 41:26Maria Pena: Zach.
- 41:30Maria Pena: Peter's… Peter's Hill.
- 41:32Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: Ugh… Alright. Well, I think that's… I think that's a good one.
- 41:44Tad Eggleston: We shouldn't… we shouldn't push just to push. I just… I noticed other things, because we were on this page, and that made me look at…
- 41:51Tad Eggleston: This very tired-looking Maggie down in the corner.
- 41:57Tad Eggleston: So, anyway… For Maria and Marisol, this has been the Love & Rockets Book Club on 22 panels.
- 42:06Tad Eggleston: And we will see you… After the next… Page. Oh my god, no.
