- 0:00SPEAKER_00: You there, adventurer?
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, you.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Do you desire knowledge of immense worlds and arcane power?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: A codex of untold stories and lore?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps simply easy listening for your daily commute?
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Then feast your eyes, or more accurately, yes, upon Dungeon Pedia.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Shit's about to get nerdy in here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Taylor Peasley.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: And I'm Travis Peasley.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: We finally did it, guys.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: We finally accidentally, no, 100% on purpose, um, are doing an episode over a topic that we have covered before.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Oopsie.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: It was gonna happen.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Listen, it was gonna happen eventually, and I knew I somehow just knew I was gonna be the person to do it.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, now it's out of the way.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: So now no one h now you don't have to worry about it anymore.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, it didn't even end up being the peak comedy that I thought it might be, where it's something that you had where it's something I something I researched myself because that is kind of objectively just hilarious.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So while it was unintentional and you know, it became the the sort of thing where by the time any of us realized that it was happening, it was already like too late.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: It was too late, you know, not just from the the literal time perspective, but also a little bit of my own sunk cost fallacy perspective with regard to the research, because uh let me tell you, this became a like an ADHD simulator, not that I need to simulate ADHD, but it turns out, but but you know, the the like where you go to look up like one thing on like Wikipedia or something, and then like two hours later you're like Where where am I?
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: What happened?
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Whoa, yeah, so that kind of happened here, but you know, it yeah, here we are.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: So what I will say is that so when uh Lewin told me and showed what what he was covering today's topic on, I was like, I think I did that.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: And I I went to go uh check and I did in fact do that, and I was like, but that's okay, because I don't think I did a very good job because I don't remember any of it.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I also throughout the entire the entire research uh period, I also didn't remember any of it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: I also don't remember any of it, so hey.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: So the good news is I did such a bad job, and this is actually something that we've been talking about doing.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Um not like super we don't plan on doing this yeah frequently or for everything, but we were discussing the topic of doing revisits, especially for things that either have had a lot of new information come out.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: There is a particular topic that I will not mention that Lewin would very much like to cover just due to new information.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: And then also another idea was doing revisits on something that we know that we can research better.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Which is I think where this topic squarely falls into.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I I'm gonna I'm gonna push through my own still sustained internal cringing at the fact that this situation happened.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: I knew it was gonna be me, yes.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: I know I fucking knew it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Um anyway, so today we are going to be talking about lung dragons from the the the eastern lands of character, and also uh, you know, uh I'll I'll I'll stop being cringy about it for in in just a sec.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: But in my defense, it was and and and Taylor brought this up before when we were talking about it.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: In my defense, this like it's probably the only time that anyone, you know, did an episode about dragons in like a non like not related to Eberon scenario that wasn't me.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was so I think in my head I was like, oh, I haven't talked about these guys.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: So that means it's never been talked about.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Um anyway.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Because no one but Lewin talks about dragons, obviously.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: It's just it's it's it's just my it's just me.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Um, no, so anyway, I I I hope at least I I will be able to, you know, because because you said that you feel like you did a bad job.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: I do I do like I would change a lot of things about like doing it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Because it was it was a long time ago.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: It wasn't like obviously it wasn't like Taylor did this like two weeks ago and I forgot about it or something.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: But yeah, so so hopefully, you know, kind of how we've all kind of evolved as researchers and commentators will be able to, you know, still make this a good experience, even if it is technically a retread.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: It is a retread, but you know, that that's okay.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so for our first little section here, everyone strap in because this section is called The Full Archaeological and Anthropological History of Dragons in Chinese Myth from the Neolithic to Now.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: So we will be here for um an entire college semester.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: So this was actually just your dissertation?
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I'm not I'm not I'm not in yeah, I'm not in I'm not in school, but this is my this is my thesis, and I'm here to defend it on um twitch.tv.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: I was uh not prepared for a full college course, but all right.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Well, get get out your notebooks, kids.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: No, so by the time we're done here, you will be able to say that you have a degree in at the very least the DD equivalent of whatever this is.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Of whatever this is.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: This is kind of just to establish, you know, a little bit of context.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: I do think similar to the vampire episode, I would wager that most people do have a pretty solid mental concept of like an Asian dragon.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Um, but I will still kind of talk about it a little bit.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: I'm not actually gonna give a dissertation, but I'm gonna talk about it a little bit.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: They're the long boys.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: So, ironically, being long boys, uh, as for their influences on lung dragons in DD, for one, the Chinese word for dragon is usually romanized as long or long.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: It you know, depends on depends on if it's like man or I've also seen versions where it's two O's long.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, which is where the name comes from.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: So they are long boys in more than one sense of the word.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Uh secondly, most Asian- Sorry, hold on, my brain just like Yeah.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: You get it?
- 7:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: No, um I had one of those O etymology is fun moments.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't know if there are any other um grew up on Disney heads uh in chat, but there was a TV show when I was a kid, American Dragon Jake Long.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: Oh and I just realized that his last name is Dragon.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: I I huh.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: I was not a Disney head, so I didn't ever watch it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: I do remember the name.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: The name of the show, yeah.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Sorry, so my brain was like, Where is Dragon hidden and everything else?
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: There was that was such a like today I learned.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Like American Dragon, Drake Dragon, Jake Dragon, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Jake Dragon, sorry, not Drake.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Not Drake Dragon.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, his name should have been Drake.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Drake Dragon.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: That's too much.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Drake Long, though.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: I mean Drake Long is kind of a yeah, that's a good name.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: God, yeah.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: I feel like I need to sit with that because that was like, that was like Reddit.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: I was today years old when, you know.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Anyway, sorry.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: So besides besides the name, and of course, obviously, this is generalizations, there's even a lot of variations because we're I'm mostly talking about Chinese dragons here.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: And there's even a lot of variations within that canon of mythology, because uh, like I I did not use the word Neolithic in that joke as a just a joke.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Like they people they've been talking about dragons for 10,000 years.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, it's a whole thing.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: But you know, this is kind of again, we're establishing a general context here.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Most Asian dragons are portrayed as long and serpentine.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, they look like this.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm I'm sholding up my arm for the camera for everyone who's not uh just for anyone who's not gonna be saying Louin does have a beautiful tattoo of a long boy, long dragon.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, on my on my arm.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: But they are usually portrayed as long and serpentine, usually without wings, but still able to fly, often with other notable features such as antler-like horns, beards or manes, and sometimes even a variety of composite traits of other animals, particularly of those from the Chinese zodiac.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Um, there so there are like descriptions of dragons as being like, you know, having the body of a snake and like the ear shape or or horns of like an oxen, so on and so forth.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Um, so thirdly, and probably even more key than their physical traits, is their portrayal in myths and legends, in contrast to many European portrayals of dragons as being destructive, oftentimes bestial in intelligence, and sometimes associated with the fire element.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Most Asian dragons are portrayed as being incredibly wise, usually benevolent, with many otherworldly powers such as invisibility, transformation, control of the weather, stuff like that, and are very closely associated with water instead of fire.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Now, of course, obviously there's variations within all of that stuff, including even within like European dragons, because like, you know, there are not every not every European dragon is a four-legged, you know, winged, fire-breathing creature.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Like the Tarasque is a dragon, for example.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: And you know, the thing is, the Tarasque specifically from like French.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's from from France.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: But you know, that's kind of that's what we're working with here.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: That's your that's your mental image.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: That's the generalization from which these mystical creatures in D sort of come from.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Except for like half of them that look different.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, even even some of those, even some of those are based on specific like subtypes of like dragons and various like Chinese myths and stuff.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Like when I realized one of them or like several of them were like a one-to-one with some of these guys, I was like, oh my god.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: And then I I had to rein myself in from being like, you can't turn this into a dissertation.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, you can, just probably not in this episode, yeah.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: And also, like, not not just about like the real world mythology, because this is this is a DD podcast.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: This is a DD podcast.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Now that we've established our our real world context, we're going to get into kind of an overview of these guys in DD.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: As I've you know made reference to, there are a number of different subtypes that we're gonna talk about, but first we're gonna kind of give an overview on them as a group.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: So Lung Dragons were introduced in the variance article Chinese Dragons by David Sweet from Dragon Number 24, which fun fact was literally one page in front of one of the lycanthropy articles that are talking about.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: And at one point while researching for that, I accidentally like flipped over and I was like, Whoa, that's cool.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'll do it.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Maybe someone should do an episode about that.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: Love it though.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Small, small world, small magazine, small world.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Small magazine, small world.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Though each subtypes blurb in that was pretty short, and there's only I think even one detail that I included from that that wasn't then kind of later reproduced and refined and what have you.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but that was where they uh first appeared, and that was in 1979.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: They were yeah, so not quite not quite like 8,000 BCE, but you know, still a little bit of a while ago.
- 12:17SPEAKER_04: A little while.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: A little while ago.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: So they were expanded on officially in a core publication publication.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Publication.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Publishation.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: They were expanded on officially in a core publication in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Fiend folio, which was published in 1981, wherein they were referred to as being, quote, related to, though different in some respects from other dragons, unquote, which is like okay, delightfully vague, but delightfully vague.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Delightfully vague, like still vague.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: In the same spirit, and the reason why I even kind of thought to include that is that in the 3.5 edition Drachonomicon, which was published in 2003, they are categorized as true dragons, which is a term that you may see floating around quite a bit.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Which I don't think I've ever properly defined or see even seen defined.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: But it's been a while.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Well, as we've established, I wouldn't remember anyway.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: So and the the the definition of true dragons for at least our purposes today are defined in the 3.5 monster manual, which was also published in 2003, as being creatures that gain powers and special abilities as they age in a specific age category definition.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Wormling, yeah, like worm, da da da, juvenile, yeah, adult, venerable, uh, and then all the way up to great worm.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Contrasting with some creatures that are also in the dragon category that do not follow this this age category structure, which is like pseudo-dragons, wyverns, drakes, sometimes.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Um sometimes.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: Sometimes sometimes drakes are another thing, and then sometimes they're also just like a like an age category for dragons.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's wild.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's you know, your true dragons broadly are you know, chromatic metallic, gem dragons, some other guys, and also lung dragons.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: So now back to lung dragons as their own specific group.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: There are eight different types of lung dragons, six of which were introduced in dragon magazine slash the fiendfolio, with two being introduced later in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons version of Oriental Adventures, which was published in 1985.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: But they they fell in pretty quickly.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: And that was also where a lot of the sort of organizational lore about them was put into place.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Um because in like the fiend folio, they were kind of just all doing their own thing.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: And they were just kind of doing their own thing.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Whereas in the A D D version of Oriental Adventures was kind of where it was like, you know, here's how all of these different subcategories of lung dragon relate to each other, and so on and so forth.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: So most of the things that we're going to discuss in this overview section are only going to apply to seven of the eight varieties of lung dragon, which I will shorthand as greater lung dragons for now, for reasons which will become clear when we start talking about the specific kinds.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: So most of these things apply to most of them, except for one of them.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: So trust me, it'll make sense.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: Sure, I believe you.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Here, here, walk with me, walk with me.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Fly with me, if you will.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: Uh play as much of play away with me as we legally can.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Play, play with me in the space.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Um so lung dragons on the whole have much greater differences between their various subgroups than do metallic or chromatic dragons, especially in the realms of physical characteristics and unique combat abilities.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Or, you know, not necessarily strictly combat, but you know, the sort of spell-like abilities they have, so on and so forth.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Which is to say that while red dragons are obviously different from black dragons in terms of coloration, horn shape, breath weapon element, so on and so forth, they still have the same general limb structure, you know, four legs, long neck, wings, yada yada.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: Among chromatic and metallic dragons, a dragon is a dragon is a dragon, essentially.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Nature made a shape.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, fake nature in this case made a shape.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: And then stuck to it.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: And there, like obviously, there's some variations too with like gold dragons have a somewhat like a slightly different wing structure, you know, because they've got those like sail-like wings.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: But yeah, you know, overall, you know, uh in the in this example too, also, even though they have different breath weapon elements, they both still have breath weapons.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but this is not the case for the differences between some varieties of lung dragons.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot more potential for physical and ability variants.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: All lung dragons uh have the power of ESP as per the spell or detect thoughts in 3.5.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: Which um I think is what uh becomes psionics.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Um the the their specific ability is part of a school of psionics.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: They don't really do psionics like besides that, because this is like a na it is a it is a it is a natural thing that they just automatically detect the thoughts of living creatures in their vicinity, depending and that vicinity depends on their age category.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: So, you know, don't try to lie to one of them, you know.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: I will do my best.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: And all uh greater lung dragons, which as I said before is seven out of eight of them, can polymorph into at least a human form, if not other, you know, things, right?
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: As well as become invisible at will, though they will become and stay visible if they are attacked.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: They also don't sleep.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Uh in in some in some books it says that they don't sleep, and then in some books it does say that they don't have to sleep.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: So I guess depending on the source book, it could kind of be up to them.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: They could take a nap if they wanted to, they just don't need to.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: But yeah, like either way, they don't actually have to sleep.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: I like when they don't have to sleep, but they could still be lazy if they want to.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: So some have the power to command certain, depending on the the the specific type of lung dragon.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Um, they have the power to command numbers of scaly creatures, so usually fish or reptiles, in certain in a certain radius around them, again, depending on their age category.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: And that kind of depends on the sort of usually type of of water that that particular type of lung dragon has dominion over.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: So like fresh water versus the ocean versus a stream versus a lake, versus just kind of whatever, you know.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, a pond.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: So another common power is called water fire, which appears as a cloak of multicolored flickering fire, kind of it sounds kind of like fairy fire to me.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Um, that surrounds the body of a dragon touching or submerged in water, to which all lung dragons are immune to the effect.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: And sadly, I do not believe that this exists in 3.5.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Dang.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: That's that's really cool.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: That does sound really cool.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Oh no, actually, no, I stand corrected.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: It does.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: Oh, it does exist in 3.5.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Never mind, we're saved.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: Hell yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: We're saved.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Just kidding.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Just kidding.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Similar to many other true dragons, um, adult lung dragons emit an aura that frightens enemies.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Everyone, everyone give it up for frightful presents.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And this aura grows more powerful as they age.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: So, as of the Monsters Compendium Volume 3, Forgotten Realms Appendix, published 1989, which I will be I I got sick of I got sick of typing that, and I just started calling it the MC3.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: So if I say the MC three, that's what that is.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, MC3 because that's a that's a mouthful.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: It is.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: They can detect invisible objects at increasing ranges as they age and have clear audience within their layers.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Clare audience.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: Is that sort of the ability to hear everything within their layer?
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: Like thoughts and stuff like that?
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Uh the mincarized is the power or faculty of hearing something not present to the ear, but regarded as having objective reality.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: Okay, so everything that occurs within their layer they can hear, even if they can't actually hear it.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: So if a tree falls in their layer but they're not there to hear it, it doesn't make a sound.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: At least they're it does actually make a sound.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I did I did write that word down and I realized I forgot to look it up.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: I figured it just because I have passing Latin knowledge.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you can intuit it kind of from the from the the structure of it.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: But you know, always good to be sure because sometimes words quite literally just passing Latin knowledge, but it's Latin knowledge.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's all you need, baby.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: So another key difference, that is to say, between lung dragons and chromatic or metallic dragons, is that while all lung dragons are listed as being some variety of neutral in alignment, as a group they are described explicitly as being not as strictly defined or delineated by alignment as chromatic or metallic dragons.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: So while many are kind and you know servile and noble and things, they can also be destructive and corrupt.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: And this is seen like there's a lot more, I think there's A lot more freedom given for this being seen more widely in individuals, you know?
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Because like obviously you can kind of you can kind of do whatever you want, but it it is like, and I think that there is kind of an implicit understanding of that in general, that like there are always going to be outliers, there are always gonna be special cases, but it is kind of treated in this case, like it is often more fluid.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: So, like sort of the way that humans are treated in DD, where it's like there's a wide variety, yeah, or like kind of like you could be any alignment, and it it it's it's less that your type matters and more that like you as a person matter.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Um, kind of.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Um I would say it's kind of like you know, the vibe being that instead of it just saying like alignment, lawful neutral, there's always a usually tact in front of it, you know.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: So their languages are also diverse, pre-3.5 at least.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: As of 3.5, they kind of just made it so they broadly communicate in draconic, but then sometimes they also speak like different elemental languages and stuff.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: But prior to that, while in most editions, all varieties speak, not necessarily speak draconic, I did write that as shorthand, basically to say that they can communicate with each other.
- 23:17SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: And they also speak spirit tongue or whatever the appropriate stand-in for the language of people who live in the spirit world in character is, and also all human languages.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Some varieties have their own unique language, and some can communicate with other creatures within their purview, like sea creatures.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's really cool.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it isn't just like draconic, there's also like some instances where like one specific subtype will have their own language that they also sometimes share with other subtypes, but not others.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: It's a whole thing.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: With the introduction of character, most lung dragons, uh or greater lung dragons rather, were established as being officials in the celestial bureaucracy, which I also got tired of writing because the word bureaucracy is really hard to remember how to spell every time.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Fuck that shit.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: So uh, but it's not it's not necessarily too much of a mouthful to say, but I did I did start.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: I always remember it by sounding it out as bureaucracy.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: But I did I did start abbreviating it in my notes as the C B because I got I mean that does actually seem straight up like a um like a government organization that you would abbreviate to C B.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: A three-letter organization.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: Just two-letter in this case, but you could go the L C B, the long C B.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Well, but the the the the problem is is they're not the only people in it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Um okay.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: Uh so the celestial doesn't matter.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fine.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: They're all we care about because I I only Because they're literally oh, because you only care about dragons?
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I only care about dragons.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: So the celestial bureaucracy is essentially a bureaucracy of various gods and immortals who occupy various stations under the celestial emperor, who is kind of the the main guy.
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: I vaguely remember the celestial emperor being discussed.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's the he's the the the god king, he's the you know the the head honcho.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: And the celestial bureaucracy or the celestial court is the main pantheon in character.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Okay, it's like him and then nine other gods, and then other assorted groups of immortal beings.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: So, based on their abilities, different kinds of lung dragon would be assigned to various kinds of what essentially amounts to magical governmental work in different areas.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: So, for example, every river and lake has a Chang Lung or river dragon dwelling within it, and that individual is responsible for things like regulating the flow of the water itself, the denizens that live within that water, and the production of rain in the area.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: And once a year, every dragon in the employee of the celestial bureaucracy must go to the celestial palace, which is in the spirit world, and present a report of the years goings on.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: But after that report is examined, they will receive whatever rewards, promotions, punishments, so on and so forth are deemed appropriate.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: So it really is uh religion, government.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: That's which is so funny.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Exhausting.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: No, it does sound so exhausting, but it's really funny.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: I do think it's so funny whenever like portrayals of like, you know, because so many like portrayals of of godly pantheons or afterlives or whatever are like this just blissful vibe, you know, vibey, like whatever.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: So I think it's very funny when and like almost go hush.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: I think it's so funny in in such a like sort of tongue-in-cheek, like cynical way, when it's like, oh no, this is also like working for the company that you hate.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: Sorry to bring it right back to this because every time I swear to god, every time like an afterlife thing is ever brought up, it reminds me of the good place.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Because the good place is very much like bureaucracy, bureaucracy and and all that stuff.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: I do think it's like it's terrible to imagine because you know, like oh god, I'm not free of bureaucracy even after I die.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm back in the fucking building, but it is funny to imagine.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: So the first variety of lung dragon we're going to talk about is the Yi lung or the carp dragon.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: I think I think I think people are getting a sense maybe of where this is going.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: And I have included Yeah, I've included pictures of all of them because I didn't get them, so unfortunately they will go up on the final version, but not the yeah, I'm I'm I'm sorry.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: It's okay.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: Hey, hold on.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I'm so sorry.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: I I typoded the name.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Not yes, I I typoded it because I originally typed it from reading something that was very small and I couldn't uh I can't read.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: So the the uh U lung or the carp dragon, and the reason that they are kind of a little bit separate from what I've been referring to as the greater lung dragons are because they are essentially the tadpole stage of other lung dragons.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: Um all lung dragons start off as you lung, and when they reach a certain age, prior to 3.5, this is 101 years old, and as of 3.5, this is 25 years old.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: What a drastic difference.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: Jesus I don't know.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: I like the I like 101.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: I also like 101.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it feels very, I don't know, like uh an important number.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as opposed to like it feels like it would be an important number for a dragon, as opposed to like, because it's like oh 101 at school, whereas 25 is like, congrats, you can rent a car now.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like this dragon can rent a car.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: This dragon can rent a car.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: So at the age of either 101 or 25, they metamorphose into an adult version of one of these seven varieties of greater lung dragon, obviously, in reference to the myth of a carp swimming up the dragon gate, which is a waterfall somewhere along the yellow river in China.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: And becoming a dragon.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: That's uh, you know, that's a that's a very, you know well-known myth.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: That's a very like pro yeah, very prolific, you know.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Even if you don't like have a particular interest in like Chinese mythology and things like that, at the very least, if you like Pokemon, you know the fun fact, but like Magikarp is based off of this myth from China.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Because us, you know, Magikarp swims up the waterfall, becomes a Gyarados.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: It's great, very inspiring.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: So befitting their ironically Eevee like nature and the fact that they can evolve into seven different things, Yulung are usually neutral in alignment, though they are chaotic neutral in the MC3.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: The MC3 was kind of wild and out.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: I feel like a lot of a lot of the the monstrous compendiums and stuff like that, they were writing a lot of they were they were wild and out in there.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: Um I I agree.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: And this also, this origin of of the U lung being the sort of tadpole stage of all lung dragons is also I think they did that and then they forgot about it because not okay, not in the way, because okay, I don't know.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: I let when I tell you I scoured, like looking to see if there was like a paragraph that says like something that would explain this.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: There are some references in the descriptions of like other lung dragons that have to do with their hatchlings or their like not reproductive habits in the way that we're gonna talk about that, you know.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: But like they're they're I guess like their their their parenting habits in a way that doesn't make sense with this.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: And so like I don't it implies that there are baby versions of the other ones, but also But also this implies that there are not baby versions of the other ones because this is the baby, yes, and there's the baby.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: And when I tell you I scoured looking to see if it was like most of them start off this way, but they can also reproduce within their own, you know, their own subset, or if they they do reproduce within their own subset, but then the babies hatches you lung.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: I don't know, guys.
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know, and they don't they don't talk about it anymore in like 3.5.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: So I think maybe they like simultaneously had these notes in there about their parenting habits and them having having um eggs and stuff, and also references to to different types of to like to to the various different subcategories in different age categories that they would not be able to be in.
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Because again, even if these are the babies, if these are the yeah, so it was it was very confusing.
- 32:20SPEAKER_02: I think they just kind of had those two things happening simultaneously and didn't realize until like 3.5 when they were like, okay, let's just stop talking about the you blonde.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Let's just stop talking, no, they they're still in like 3.5.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, sorry, like the eggs, yeah.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: Let's stop talking about them having eggs or having like disparate populations because of bad parenting habits, you know what I mean?
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: So anyway, um, yeah, I really don't know what was up with that.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: This transformation of the Yulung into adult variations of lung dragons happens instantaneously at midnight on their 101st or 25th birthday, and is accompanied by a loud crack of thunder, after which they are given a new home and a job by the celestial bureaucratic.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: So it's like the countdown timer to their birthday, boom, you're 25, you can buy a car, but now you have to get a job.
- 33:18SPEAKER_04: Not only do you have to get a job, you are given a job.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: You were assigned a job.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: Loud crack of thunder, congratulations, you now have a job.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Like, get get get to work.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Like, all right, thanks, I guess.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, cool.
- 33:31SPEAKER_03: Like, what the fuck?
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: So, in all editions but the MC3, all potential outcomes are equally likely, but the MC3 offers an alternative that would see essentially quote unquote weaker varieties being more common.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Which to me, like, I think that that made sense because there's also references where, like, you know, in the U Lung entry, it'll say, like, oh yeah, it they have an equal chance of transforming into whatever kind.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: And then in another Lung Dragons section, it'll be like, Well, these are the most common.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: And it's like, well, that doesn't make sense.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: If it's just rolling a dice and all the dice are equal sided, everyone should eventually equal out to about the same.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think they maybe had like a a couple different people that were writing talk didn't talk to each other enough working on these guys.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: I think you're right.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they're also cool, so whatever.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: Um, so Yulung have the head and forelegs of a dragon with the body and tail of a carp.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: So they're like dragon mermaids.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Um they're like dragon mermaids.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: I was actually gonna say their tail looks like a mermaid tail.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it kind of because mermaid uh I think might that might be the angle because mermaids have flat tails, sort of like a whale.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's the angle.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: Whereas carps have the straight up and down.
- 34:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's the angle because he's kind of like twisting around to grab at a real uh fish that's making a really funny face.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: That fish is upset and scared.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: So they have blue-gray scales and markings of various colors with wispy little beards and cat-like yellow eyes.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Wispy.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: Um wispy little beards.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: They can't grow a full beard yet because they're babies.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Also, before 3.5, where they max out at being in the medium-sized category at the largest, they are still huge despite being the essentially the tadpole stage.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: They are given a base of 18 feet long in the feedfolio.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: That's a big baby.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: In the MC3, they can have a body length of up to 35 feet and a tail length of 30 feet.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: So these things can get fucking huge before 3.5 was kind of like about the fish growing to the size of its container.
- 35:48SPEAKER_04: True.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: That's a good point.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, but still, god damn it.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: So they live in all varieties of fresh water and can only breathe water, though they can drag themselves around on land for up to an hour.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: Like they drag themselves around.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: So, like the lungfish?
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, except they do have a lot of things.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, wait, yeah, except the lungfish actually do breathe.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say the uh Yulung, at least the picture depicts that it has one like leg and claw.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: No, it's got it does have two.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: I think that's just the picture.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: They do have like regular four legs, but it is still funny imagining them just dragging themselves around.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: So they have very few abilities as described earlier.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: So they can't polymorph, they can't turn invisible, they can't fly, yada yada yada, they don't have the water fire ability, they can't command creatures, so on and so forth.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: But in the MC3, they do have the ability to cast bless and curse, which all other lung dragons also get, while they are still in their tadpole-like form.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: And they have the special ability to exhale a cloud of gas that acts like a potion of healing once per day.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: It's not, I don't know why.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: They I don't know why, but they can.
- 36:57SPEAKER_04: Well, you know what?
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: Uh it does, I think, inspire a lot of like the I think the reason I like it is because it gives a pathwork for like rewarding your players for a good deed.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: Like if they do something nice for the the the Yulung, it might like heal them or bless them.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and there's other there's other reasons you might want to be nice to them also, or if they piss it off, it's just gonna curse you.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Yulung have no position in the celestial bureaucracy, they receive no like broad reverence or or accolades from people, and they make their homes in quote unquote small mansions crafted from mud and stone in the depths of whatever body of water they inhabit.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: I like that, which is any variety of fresh water, like I said.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: So while these homes are neat and well constructed for being mud huts, basically, these layers are considered sh like pretty shoddy in comparison to other lung dragons.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Because they're just little guys, they're slow guys doing their best.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: They're doing their best.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: 18-foot-long little guys.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: 18-foot-long little guys.
- 38:06SPEAKER_02: Then this is partially because other some other lung dragon layers get very elaborate, and also because the U lung do not collect treasure, so they're pretty they're not they don't really decorate, you know.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: They are the least intelligent, averaging five to seven intelligence of all lung dragons and are also the most docile.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: They well, they're kids, basically.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: They're kids, they're very yeah, which is stupid.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Um that's kind of what I meant, but yeah.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know a lot of kids that I would describe as docile, I'm not gonna lie.
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: Uh I I know several.
- 38:38SPEAKER_04: Well, okay, when the options are like docile or aggressive, yeah, true.
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: You know, in being that they're very docile and timid, they, you know, will much more quickly run away and try to hide than fight.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: They are omnivores who scavenge food, both organic and inorganic, from the muck at the bottom of the water that they dwell in, and they live peacefully with other denizens of the water, even though what the Yulung in that picture is trying to do to that fish does not look very peaceful.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, you gotta eat.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: You gotta eat.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: And they can even form friendships with humans, which are notable because they will persist even after the Yulung transforms.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Assuming the person lives long, because again, it could either be 25 years, which is not no time for a human, or 101 years, which is like you're probably not gonna live long.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: It depends on whet at what point in the uh U lung's 101 years that you meet them.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: So now that we've talked about the sort of basics, the overview, and the the starting point for these guys, we are going to take a break before we talk about the other seven of them.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 39:48SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Let's take our break.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: Hey everybody, thank you for checking out our revisit, our revisit on Lung Dragons.

- 40:32SPEAKER_04: And as soon as I have specifics and dates, I will give those to you.

- 40:46SPEAKER_04: I will let you know.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: But new episodes are still coming out, there just might be some delays.

- 42:08SPEAKER_04: A big thank you to Alexander Nakarada for our theme song Blacksmith, played at the beginning and and middle of every episode.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: And uh with that, let's get back to lung dragons.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: So, the first of the quote unquote greater lung dragons we're going to discuss is the Shen lung or spirit dragon.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: So, even in sources where a Yu lung is described as having an equal chance to metamorphose into any subspecies, they are sometimes referred to as the most common or numerous lung dragon, whether or not that makes sense, whatever, it's fine.
- 42:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: Um and despite despite this, they're actually some of my, they're actually probably probably my favorite.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: Um they are very pretty.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: They are very pretty.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: And for each of the the different pictures I selected was kind of just my my favorite portrayal of theirs, or what I thought was maybe the most, in some cases, what was maybe the most like concise, you know?
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: Um so they are wingless quadrupeds with long tails, um, spiked backs in the the 3.5 art.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: It looks kind of like the sail of like a Spinosaurus or something.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: It looks really cool.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: Um, golden whiskers and two horns on their head.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: They come in various shades of red, green, blue, and orange.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: And while young Shenlung are dull in color, their scales will turn vibrant as they age.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: I love them.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: How young and the the mechanics of which they become, or they are young, who knows?
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: They certainly didn't know when they wrote some of these entries, but yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: They forgot about the poor little Yulung, but whatever.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: So uh despite their lack of wings, Shenlung can fly.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: And this is due to a sometimes it's it is just described as a magical pearl.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: Sometimes sometimes it's referred to as an organ that looks like a pearl.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: That is embedded in their brain.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 44:02SPEAKER_04: Sort of taking back from another uh.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is another which is another real life dragon that you know what I mean.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Dragon Dragon myth.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: Dragons are real, you know.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Um everyone knows that.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Everyone knows dragons are real.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: And this organ only functions for that.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: It's not exactly an elegant way to phrase it.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Uh essentially, if that organ is removed, it's not like it will give anything the power to fly.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: It only functions like for that dragon.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: So you can't just like take it and plant it in yourself and then fly.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:39SPEAKER_04: Or use it to enchant something else.
- 44:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: And also you shouldn't do that anyway, because it's not very nice.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Kind of rude.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: But they are in some in some editions, they are described as being very valuable given the whole, you know.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: Given the whole pearl thing, and you can only get it out of them if they're dead thing, you know.
- 45:01SPEAKER_04: Uh I mean, I guess if they're you're a surgeon.
- 45:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like a brain surgeon.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: Dragon brain surgeon.
- 45:08SPEAKER_04: I'm a dra I'm a draconic neurosurgeon.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Dream job.
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: Dream job.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: So they are usually chaotic neutral.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: They were changed to lawful neutral in 3.5, and they speak their own language, which they share with the Pan Lung, which is another kind we're gonna talk about later, as well as the language of the Changlung.
- 45:29SPEAKER_02: So they have their own language, but they also speak the language of a different subspecies of lung dragon.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: Um, and also I I did include these just because I think that they're fun details, but this whole like individual like language thing is kind of abandoned in 3.5, but I included it because I think it's cool.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: It is really cool.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: So Shenlung have an interesting mix of abilities and characteristics, which to me seems befitting for the courtiers of the lung dragons, which they're described as being.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: So on the physical side, they have an especially long and dexterous tail, which they can use to attack even enemies that are directly in front of them.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: And their tail slam is considered as being that of a creature one size category higher than that individual is.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: So they've got a very powerful tail.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: Um, they can breathe both water and air, which I think actually all of the rest of them can, except for one type of them forthcoming.
- 46:30SPEAKER_04: So it's more like this is the norm, and the other one is sort of outside the norm.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is the norm now.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: I think the only two that can't breathe both water and air are the U lung who can't breathe air, and then an upcoming one that can't breathe in water.
- 46:45SPEAKER_02: Um so on the magical side, they have access to water fire, they have access to scaly command for 2D10 times their age category.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: So they commit can command scaly creatures, yes, and that is just kind of anything within a certain, you know, certain radius.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: So then they just they just suddenly have like 50 some odd um 50 some odd like scaly snakes, snakes and fish and stuff just just coming to their defense, and they have access to spells such as ice storm, uh control weather, and then 3.5, also cone of cold, and a spell I'd never heard of before called Horrid Wilting.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: What is horrid wilting?
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: To be fair, that that is also their like that is the spell they get upon reaching the great worm age category.
- 47:40SPEAKER_02: So that's like the big one.
- 47:42SPEAKER_02: That's the big one.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: What what does it do?
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: Okay, let's see.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: The spell evaporates moisture from the body of each subject's living creature dealing one d6 points of damage for caster level, maximum 20 d6.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: The spell is especially devastating to water elementals and plant creatures, which instead take 1d8 points of damage to a maximum of 20 d8.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's horrible.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: So it's like that one episode of Avatar the Last Air.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was literally like, oh, it is um it's that yeah, it's the blood bending episode.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: It's uh range, by the way, is 400 feet plus 40 feet per level, and it seems like it can be any living creature as long as they are no more than 60 feet apart.
- 48:32SPEAKER_02: Nice, good, quite horrid, in fact.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very horrid.
- 48:37SPEAKER_02: So they are immune to lightning and poison damage, but they take double damage from fire.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: A minor unrelated quality is that no insect, arachnid, or arthropod, very specifically listed all of those, uh-huh, um, can approach within 60 feet of a Shenlung.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: And in 3.5, this is expanded to include all vermin.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: They are they have an anti-vermin shield.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: Um, so despite their host of combat abilities, Shen Lung will almost always attempt to parlay instead of fighting.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: Um so before the Cheng Lung, which again are the river dragons, were introduced in Oriental Adventures in 1985, like all of the different types of lung dragons were kind of just doing their own thing before, because this was sort of before they were brought in on this, like you know, before they were kind of brought into the fold as being operatives of the celestial bureaucracy, because at that point the celestial bureaucracy did not exist.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Um, so but especially Shenlung were kind of just doing their own thing because after the introduction of the Chang Lung, the Shenlung were relegated to being their assistants.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: So we'll talk.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: Imagine, imagine you're so excited for your 101st birthday, and then you get that flashbang, lightning strike, and then it's like, congratulations, you're a secretary.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: Like, wait, wait, what the fuck?
- 50:03SPEAKER_02: You're like, this is a rub.
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: Can I get a redo?
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: So we'll talk more in detail about the Cheng Lung in their own section.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: But for now, all you need to know about them is that the Chenglung are the guardians of rivers and lakes, and they are usually attended to by about 1d6-ish uh Chenglung who act as their bodyguards and their aides.
- 50:24SPEAKER_02: Of course, Shenlung.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: Man, assigned assigned secretary at 101st.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: At adulthood.
- 50:33SPEAKER_02: So Shenlung are fascinated by humans and often polymorph into their human forms to mingle with people.
- 50:40SPEAKER_02: That's so cute.
- 50:41SPEAKER_02: I know it's so cute.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: And on the other side of that, humans usually view Shenlung very favorably and also probably come into contact with them the most of many types of lung dragons because they are kind of the courtiers, the every men, you know, yeah, uh, among them.
- 50:58SPEAKER_02: And they consider the messengers of the gods and often construct shrines to them in the hopes that it will bring good fortune.
- 51:04SPEAKER_02: So the Shenlung live in rivers and lakes in modest but fine stone mansions, usually not far from the opulent residences of their Changlung bosses, essentially, um, whom they are fiercely loyal to.
- 51:19SPEAKER_02: So despite the fact that, you know, they were forced into it.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in some senses, you would probably think it's kind of a rub to be like, okay, congratulations, your new identity is secretary.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: It's not exactly secretary, but you know what I mean.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Um, they are still very loyal to the dragons that they have been put on the put on the team of, you know.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: They also maintain good relationships with various nature spirits.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: And I like, I don't know, I just like these guys.
- 51:50SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: They just seem like nice, you know, nice just just stand-up dragons, you know.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: When you need something done, you know.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: So the main part of their diet is precious stones, though they also like fish and rodents, which I don't know how they get fresh rodents because of their anti-vermin shield.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I I I guess maybe they have to get them get them get them frozen thought or something.
- 52:16SPEAKER_02: Maybe like someone has to like bring them to them just dead already.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: I guess.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: Also, the only factoid present in the original dragon article that never returned is that apparently Shen Lung love arsenic, bamboo, and swallows.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 52:32SPEAKER_02: Huh.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know if one or all of those are meant to be in a consumptive manner or if they just think it it's describing their absolute favorite soup.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Arsenic and swallow soup.
- 52:47SPEAKER_02: You know, some dragons just can't hold their arts.
- 52:51SPEAKER_02: Except these ones can.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if it's supposed to all of them are in a consumptive manner, or if it's supposed to be like, okay, well, they're describing their favorite drug, their favorite plant, and then their favorite bird.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: I'm assuming they do mean eating though.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: So I mean, whatever you want to eat, I suppose.
- 53:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:13SPEAKER_02: So uh appropriately next, we're going to talk about the Chang Lung or the River Dragon.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: Ah, they're bosses.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: Which, yeah, they're they're bosses.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: So one of the two, these are one of the two subspecies of lung dragon that were introduced after the first six that were introduced in Fiendfolio.
- 53:30SPEAKER_02: So these these two were were, or this is one of the two that were brought in later.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: So Chang Lung or river dragons are guardians of rivers and lakes, as we've touched on a couple times, and bringers of rain.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: Yay! Um similar to be petitioning these guys, like please.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: They are serpentine quadrupeds with scales in various shades of blue and green with bright yellow bellies, webbed feet, multicolored beards, and a pair of big white horns.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: I like the bright yellow bellies.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's very it's very cute.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Similar to the Shen Lung, despite lacking wings, they can fly thanks to that same magical pearl-shaped organ.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: So while all varieties of lung dragon, besides the Yulung, can polymorph into a human form, Chang Lung spend a lot of time in their human form and seem to prefer it to their natural body.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: Which is very interesting.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: These guys are very interesting.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: They are lawful neutral, trending toward good.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Like that is it is very interesting.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: Like that is in, I think, pretty much like every one of their stat blocks is a parenthetical trending toward good.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that says either like trending towards good or usually good or something like that.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Which is very interesting.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: So I guess they're like, you know, they're in the box, but they're but they're like right up there by the right top by the border.
- 54:53SPEAKER_02: By the border, yeah.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: Make them lawful good.
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: It's not that hard.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 54:58SPEAKER_02: And they speak their own language.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or new, or neutral good, you know.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: And they speak their own language as well as that of Shenlung and fish, because they live in the water.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: They speak the language fish.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they they speak the language of uh it always says fishes too, like not fish, but like fishes, which I think is fishes.
- 55:17SPEAKER_04: It implies the existence of multiple fish languages, yeah.
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: And also, like, I think it's just the more fun way to say fish in a plural manner, even if it is technically one of those words where you don't have to do that.
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: I think fishes is just well, I mean, yeah.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: Do you really think that koi are gonna speak the same brutal language as catfish?
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: Sorry, they're more sophisticated than that.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: Are catfish carp?
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: I I think catfish are cats.
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: Catfish is catfish are something else.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: So, as I'm sure you can imagine, Changlung have access to many powers related to water.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously, they can they can breathe both water and air, which I'm probably gonna stop mentioning except for the one who can't.
- 55:57SPEAKER_02: This is one of those things.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: They are not carp.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 56:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, this is and that is one of those things where like I always put it in as a note because it, you know, it always seemed relevant.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: And only now that I'm sitting here thinking about the summation of all of it, I'm like, oh no, I think that's most of them actually.
- 56:13SPEAKER_02: Most of them can breathe water.
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: Like, actually, you know what?
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: Never mind.
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, never mind.
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: So they can exhale storm clouds to create when rain whenever they please.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's cool.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: Which is super cool.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: So it's not like they don't, it's not a traditional breath weapon, but it is cool that it's like they exhale storm clouds as opposed to like, oh, they can just make them, you know.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: Like I think that's a really cool detail.
- 56:36SPEAKER_04: Like the and the flavor text, more flavor text.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: The flavor, you know.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: So once per day, and only under the explicit command of the celestial bureaucracy, they can create a highly destructive tsunami.
- 56:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:52SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: No, thank you.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not good, but like still still very cool.
- 56:58SPEAKER_04: Very cool, but not cool, actually.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: Don't piss off the celestial bureaucracy and yeah.
- 57:04SPEAKER_02: So other uh hits as far as their abilities go uh include control weather, major creation, augury, divination, and dispel evil.
- 57:13SPEAKER_02: These guys are kind of one of the subsets of these guys that are very much in the goody two shoes kind of camp a little bit.
- 57:21SPEAKER_02: Um so similarly to Shenlung, they are very hesitant to fight, but are obviously very dangerous combatants if need be.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Also, since they are so often in human form, they are usually well armed and proficient with some variety of magic weapon.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Though pre-3.5, when it did mention their combat abilities in human form, it said that they would always be equipped specifically with a plus five sword that was so large that they needed to succeed on a uh bend bar slash lift gates check, because this was a dragon uh check to even attack with it.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: I don't know why.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: I guess it's just like okay, Jesus Christ.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: This this big ass sword just comes free with your dragon powers.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: But you know, if you can swing it, it's a plus five.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: So this big ass sword that you can barely swing.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: Another fun detail is that anyone physically in contact with a Changlung can breathe and move freely underwater.
- 58:20SPEAKER_02: It's so cool.
- 58:21SPEAKER_02: Which is which is fun, which is very helpful because they like taking humans' places.
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: They like they like humans.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: That's nice.
- 58:29SPEAKER_04: I I and this might be like one of those uh anthropomorphizing animals and not good things that I've I've heard before, but I've always heard the factoid that elephants see humans in the same way that like humans see like small adorable creatures.
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, I've I've heard that too.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: And that that's the vibe I'm getting from these dragons.
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: Um kind more more like uh analytically, I guess.
- 59:02SPEAKER_02: No, they they also have sex with people.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, so um not quite.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: Okay, um, never mind.
- 59:08SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about that in a second.
- 59:09SPEAKER_04: That's the vibe that I'm getting from some of them.
- 59:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:13SPEAKER_02: So Chang Lung reside in the spirit world at the bottom of whatever body of water they have dominion over, and they live in magnificent palaces in their human form.
- 59:23SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, it says no matter the size of the body of water, the palace of a Chang Lung is always very large in size and opulently decorated, and also filled with their any shenlung they have in their employ, and also spirit attendants who also are in human form in this palace.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: They're like they've got obsessed with humans, they've got TARDIS technology, I guess.
- 59:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I don't know, but it's very it's very much giving the uh the dragon palace from Okami.
- 59:57SPEAKER_02: If anyone's played that game, if you haven't played the game, you should play that game.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_02: You should play that game.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: It's very, it's it's it's very much giving that.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: And unless freely given as a gift by a Changlung, any item taken from their palace immediately turns into worthless junk upon reaching the surface.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: So don't even drop that.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, use that to thwart your your thieving rogues.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: You get out of there, you get out of that palace, you're like, oh, that was so stressful.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: I thought it wasn't gonna make, and then you get back up there and it's just like now it's a rock.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_02: It's like foiled again.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: In addition to being the guardians of rivers and lakes, they were also patrons of the arts and scholarship, things like that, and often enjoyed entertaining humans on fancy boats while posing as nobles, government officials, so on and so forth.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: Which I guess they kind of are, but you know, right, they were also frequently attracted to humans, though these relationships would usually end very sadly due to the lifespan decrepancy, discrepancies, and the fact that the dragon has a very intense government job.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, yeah, um so children of these unions were always spirit folk, specifically river spirit folk.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: And despite their obvious weak spot for humans, Shanglong tended to be very by the book, um, as I said, sticking strictly to explicit orders from the celestial bureaucracy, even when humans beseech them for, you know, rainfall, like we're trying to do.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_02: Like we're trying, yeah.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: Please.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, these guys are so these guys are so interesting to me because like, and this is something I feel like I do with D D sometimes, where I get a I get a mental image of like a character.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: I connect something in in the text with like a mental image that I have of a character or like another trope or something that is not necessarily actually reflective of the text in DD itself, which is to say that I'm imagining a Chang Lung swooning on their on their on their Shay's lounge, sad and malingering about their their human lover, while their their Shen Lung like secretary is like okay, yeah, but can you can you finalize this report for me, please?
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Like while they're over there on the couch, like sad, sad about it.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: They have to have a fainting couch.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like like they're the they're the trope to me a little bit, like they're not, because obviously they're incredibly intelligent, incredibly powerful, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_02: But I am imagining a sort of like duo of like uh, you know, like you see in in shows sometimes where you have like a boss or like a CEO type character who's like actually a little bit useless, and it's like their secretary or their assistant or whatever that's kind of the the one who actually gets stuff done.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_02: Except I'm specifically imagining it being like this very regal, finely dressed, noble looking person who's just constantly sad about these like humans that they love dying, these ill-fated love affairs, you know.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you know, free character, free character concept for you.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: So next we are going to talk about the Lee lung or the earth dragon.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Take a wild guess which one of the lung dragons can't breathe water.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: Uh though we found we found it.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_04: The sea dragon.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, okay, yeah, no, it's earth dragon.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_02: The lee lung or earth dragon uh has a quadrupedal body resembling a lion with a dragon's head adorned with human features.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_02: Like in this image, you can really see it in the shape of the ears, you know.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of weird.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: They they kind of abandon that a little bit in 3.5, like they still kind of describe them that way, but it is a little bit more kind of Leonine on the whole in 3.5.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: And is also the only variety of lung dragon that has wings, and this is actually based very closely on another actual, like real-life Chinese dragon.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_02: Real life, you know what I mean.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_04: Nobody knows Chinese dragon.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_02: Nobody remind me, nobody remind me the dragons aren't real.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_02: Newly transformed Lee lung have light green scales, but as they age, thick coils of fur start to grow out from between the scales, darkening over time and eventually overtaking their whole body to the point where they literally they look like they just have fur.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_02: Their leathery wings are tipped with quills that resemble the feathers of a peacock.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_02: Um you can't really see it in this picture, but it is, it is, it is really cool.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_02: They kind of in in some respects, like it it reminds me very much of like the almost like a single-headed chimera in a way.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_02: Because it has those very strong like lion influences, but also still has that reptilian, that reptilian, that reptilian vibe, and like the you know, um so they are consistently listed as neutral in alignment and they speak their own language as well as Terran in 3.5.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_02: Because element languages are big on those in third edition.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_02: As one might expect from their name, Li Lung have a suite of abilities related to manipulating earth and stone.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_02: Again, like I said, these are the only ones that cannot breathe underwater.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: Once per day, they can create an earthquake, the size of which depends on their age.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_02: Curiously, this is such a funny detail to me.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_02: They are also completely immune to any physical harm from an earthquake.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: Um, rendering the experience a mild inconvenience to them just from having to dig out of some rubble.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_02: I don't really know how that works.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_04: Like the the the the notion of of elemental immunities obviously is not foreign to me, but it's blood force damage from the element it would not typically be immune to, but uh, in this instance, yes.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_02: It is funny to imagine that it's like, yeah, they're just immune.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: To getting beamed on the head with a rock.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_04: The rock would simply know to soften itself.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: But hey, fuck it.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_02: It's magic, whatever.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_02: So Lee Lung are very reluctant to fight, usually preferring to hide in the shadows or underneath rubble to avoid conflict.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: They actually in 3.5, maybe this is also from earlier editions, but I remember it from 3.5, they actually get like a very sizable bonus to hide checks to counteract the deficit they get when they get to very large sizes.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: So even if this is like a colossal sized Lee Lung, it has like a plus a gazillion to hide checks.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: Um plus a gazillion.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: Plus a gazillion.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_02: If their earthquake ability, which is their first line of defense in combat, um, doesn't just bury their opponents while engaging in melee, they will continuously let out a roar that sounds like metal scraping on stone, which is so loud that anything within 60 feet of the dragon cannot hear anything else and is considered deafened.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_02: Um Jesus.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_02: And as they age, they gain the ability to cast such spells as wall of stone, flesh to stone.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_02: Um, they get disintegrate in 3.5.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_02: Pretty earth-focused, obviously.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_02: Lee Lung can burrow through solid stone, like an umber hulk or a boolet, and they make their layers in caverns deep underground.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_02: Quote, the farther from civilization, the better.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: Same.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: Relatable.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_04: And that's why we live in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: I I don't, but spiritually I do.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_02: So, as I'm sure you can imagine, they are very solitary, uh seldom leaving their layers or interacting with other dragons except on the direct orders of the celestial bureaucracy.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and they subsist mostly on earth and stone, but are fond of eating precious minerals.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_02: Delicious.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_02: Delicious rocks.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: Delicious rocks.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, who who among us hasn't among us hasn't eaten rocks?
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_02: Me.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: Me.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_02: Okay, so next we're gonna talk about the Lung Wang or the Sea Dragon.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_02: That's yeah.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_02: I see dragon, I say ooh, also.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: Uh stupid, stupid, stupid.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_02: So um, in some editions, they're uh referred to as being cousins of the dragon turtle.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know if they mean that literally or figuratively, because dragon turtles, I don't think are I don't think are true dragons.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're true dragons.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if they are kind of just saying that in reference to their appearance.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_02: I think probably that one, yeah.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_02: They maybe are.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_02: Lung Wang have the body of a sea turtle, a crested neck, so they have like a you know, they have a little like a little ridge on their neck, kind of like the Shen Lung do, and a draconic head with small black horns.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_02: They're very cute.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: They're very, they're very cute.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: I thought the horns were eyebrows at first.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, that'd be so good.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_02: The angry eyebrows.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_02: So they're the scales on their body are light green and flecked with gold, and their shell is a dark green flecked with silver, and they have golden whiskers.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_02: Their hind legs are basically just small flippers, but their front legs are very long and powerful and tipped with large hooked claws.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_02: So despite spending all their time in water, they can also breathe air.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: That actually does feel notable to mention for these guys because they do live in water.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_02: They are neutral in alignment and speak their own language as well as the language of Shenlung, fishes, and they speak Aquan in 3.5 because they're water consistent.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_02: So Lung Wang are one of the types of lung dragons that actually have a breath weapon, which is a giant cone of steam that they can use three times a day.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_02: And kind of in line with this, I feel uh they are fully immune to fire damage.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm not surprised.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they live in water, they do live in water, and also they breathe hot water, yeah, essentially.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they did not get scald cut from their learn set in Gen 8.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: Stupid, stupid Pokemon joke.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_03: God, um didn't even know that was a thing.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's let's not get them started.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of there's a lot of YouTube videos about that one specific move being cut from a lot of Pokemon.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_02: So Lung Wang can command a number of scaly ocean dwellers, which is 4D10 times age category.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_02: New equation.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: It's so funny the things that you end up kind of doing for shorthand in things like this, to where then it ends up with like, here's your glossary on the C B and the 4D10 times age category.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_04: But it's also one of those things where like very quickly into discussing something, it sort of becomes like, oh yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_02: But also like, keep up, we're gonna have a we're gonna have a pop quiz later.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_02: The Lung Wang rarely stay in one place, um, spending most of their time patrolling their oceanic territory and attacking unauthorized vessels and underwater intruders.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_02: If they do sort of uh acquire things that they want to keep, they'll usually deposit them in one of a few different like caches in different parts of their of their underwater territory.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_02: They often demand tribute from passing ships, and if it is not given, they will attempt to capsize the ship by surfacing underneath it.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_02: I think it said if if it's this if it's like so say you have like a a a huge lung wang, if they attempt to capsize a ship that is huge size or smaller, they have a 95% chance of succeeding.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_02: And then there's like formulas for like if the ship is bigger, you know.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, they just they just come up, they just come up underneath it and just just yeah, capsize it.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is a very nice neutral thing to do.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_02: Um so regular travelers through their territory will often work out arrangements with the dragon in question, which usually amounts to just dumping heaps of treasure at a predetermined location on the voyage.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_03: So that way they're like, all right, we're paying the taxes, leave us alone.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_03: So we have reached, you know, typical like dragon behavior here.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: These guys are like the worst toll booth toll booth operators where if you don't pay to get on the turnpike, they try to fucking kill you.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_02: For real.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_04: Which is definitely what I thought would happen to me the first time that I didn't have money to get on the turnpike.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they just try to kill you.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_02: They despite what I despite their kind of like, I guess it's kind of all kind of with you know, it's within the system of like if it's not a ship that they know is like okay passing through their territory, and I'm sure they do stop plenty of like pirates or people with other untoward intentions, it does just feel inherently kind of mean, I guess.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_02: But despite this maybe questionable behavior, maybe maybe questionable.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe questionable, they are mostly herbivorous, though they will occasionally eat fish and varieties of inorganic material from capsized ships.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_02: They are cordial with other lung dragons besides the Tunmi lung or typhoon dragons, which we're gonna talk about in a minute.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_02: Three guesses why they don't get along with them.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, and they are friendly with many ocean denizens, such as sharks, whales, myrfolk, etc., whom they use as sources of information.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_04: Beautiful.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_04: I love them.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_04: They're they're a little, they're kind of little shits, but I do still love them.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're fucking big shits, actually.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just kind of.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_04: Just kind of when you're talking DD and specifically dragons, the fucking bar is up here.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that that's that's fair enough, I suppose.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_02: And they are certainly not even the worst of the lung dragons that you can encounter in the ocean.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_02: Because now we're gonna talk about the Tunmi lung or the typhoon dragon.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, good.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_02: Um, so it just sounds great already.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, typhoons, great.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: Uh so these guys are the second of the species that was introduced in Oriolet Adventures in 1985 after the first six, because they were like, We need some we need some edge here.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_02: We need some we need something edgy.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_02: So the Fun Mi Long or Typhoon dragons have long serpentine bodies that come in a variety of shades.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_02: Most common are dark red, blue, green, or violet.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_02: They have stringy beards and enormous jaws lined with hooked teeth.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_02: Um they are the large yeah, they are the largest of all lung dragons, and they, similar to the Shenlung and the Chang Lung, fly via the use of that magical pearl organ.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_02: They are usually neutral evil in alignment because they they were like, we need some evil guys here.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: Um gotta get some evil.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_02: We need a little bit of whatever this is.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_02: Um and they speak their own language, the languages of all sea creatures, um, sea lords and aquan in 3.5.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: So Tun Mi Lung are extremely powerful, being described as difficult to control, even by the celestial emperor.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_02: Oof.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_02: Honestly, the more I read about these guys, I was like, why do they keep them around at all?
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_02: So their most important and favored combat ability is a once per week divine wind that lasts for 64 hours, during which it travels with the dragon, acting as the eye of this powerful storm.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_02: So essentially, once a week they can create a typhoon.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_02: A typhoon.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_02: Typhoon, yeah.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_02: Hence the name.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_02: They are immune to water and air-based attacks, and they can use spells such as lightning bolt and chain lightning.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_02: And failing any of those, they can cast darkness before engaging foes in melee with that big fucking mouth.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_04: They do have a rather large mouth.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: They do have a big mouth.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's huge.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_02: As one would expect from their evil alignment, Tun Mi Lung are incredibly destructive and malevolent.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_02: While they have been charged by the Celestial Emperor with creating typhoons and hurricanes, because you know, the circle of life, yeah, whatever, yada yada yada.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_02: They will often ignore orders and go beyond what they have been instructed to do because they love the carnage.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_02: Um, so Talos loves these guys.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Talos would love these guys, they got the lightning, they got the storms.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_03: Or he would hate them because he would think that they were encroaching on his territory.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_02: They're not deities.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_02: True, yeah.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, true.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_03: Good point.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, I think he would end up hating them because he might want to party with them, but they would not want to party with him, and he would probably take it personally.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_02: And then they'd be enemies.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_02: And 3.5 describes that when they go on a rampage, only the powerful Tian Lung or Celestial Dragons, who we're gonna talk about later, can reign them in.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_02: They are loathed by pretty much every civilized group of creatures that they share the ocean with, particularly the Lung Wang, because they often kind of come into contact with each other because of shared ocean portfolios, essentially.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_02: Shared portfolios, so to speak.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_02: So nothing is known conclusively about their layers, although it's assumed they have them somewhere out in the open ocean, away from all of the people and other dragons and things that hate them.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but they are very solitary, they shun the company of others, including other Tun Mi Lung.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_02: This is another one of those situations where they discuss that like males do not stay with the females after like mating, and females just dump the eggs somewhere, which contributes to very high infant mortality.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what infants?
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_02: Where?
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_03: Where are the infants?
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you, they're in the they're in the rivers because they're carps.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_04: Well that she dumps the the egg somewhere and they wash up, and then uh I guess they salmon it upstream, yeah.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: And then they just boom transform into a different kind of lung dragon anyway.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_02: I really think that they forgot.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_02: They made the new lung because they were like, cool, we love the we love the carp, we love the carp, you know, into into dragon story, and then they forgot about them a little bit.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think maybe.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_02: But yeah, these guys suck.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_02: Like I said, they're very solitary and they spend most of their time flying up and down the coast or out over the open ocean, usually dragging a divine wind typhoon with them.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, cool, cool for fun, just for fun.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_02: Very cool.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_02: So the second to last variant that we're gonna talk about is the pan lung or the coiled dragon.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_02: They are also referred to by the signifier quote, guardians of hidden places, since coiled dragon doesn't really give you much of a vibe on what their job is.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_04: Their picture is chunky.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they look chunky, which is chunky, which is ironic because they are described as being basically like thinner and longer versions of the shenlung that we talked about earlier.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_02: But the art does not suggest this.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_02: The art, the art, this art does suggest that they're chunky.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_02: So again, they have that same serpentine quadrupedal body shape.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_02: Their scales are naturally oily, which gives them a sheen in the sunlight.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_02: And while juvenile pang uh panlung are gray, their scales quickly turn vibrant, usually in shades of red, orange, or green.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_02: They have multicolored manes and dark-colored whiskers.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_02: And again, as with Shenlung and so on and so forth, they fly with the use of the magic, the magic curl.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_02: Um they are usually chaotic neutral, which was changed to lawful neutral in 3.5.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_02: They really just did a shake up, they really just they really were just kind of doing whatever.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_02: That's fine, whatever.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_02: Um, that's fine.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_02: And they speak their own language, which they share with the Shenlung, as well as the languages of fishes and reptiles.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_02: Penlung can use scaly command for one D10 times their age category and water fire.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_02: And in melee, they can constrict foes with their long tails.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_02: Um they kind of have a little bit of a uh some of the like in the MC3 and I think a couple of other books, they specifically describe a very specific like bite and grab and coil combo, essentially, that is very is very reminiscent of a lot of constrictor snakes in the real world, which is pretty cool.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_02: They gain access to spells as opposed to how a lot of the other lung dragons have a more elemental focus.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_02: These guys have a focus on sort of illusion and enchantment effects with spells like ventriloquism, charm monster, which has always kind of been their calling card.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_02: Um, minor and major image, and also fucking Phantasmal Killer in 3.5.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, all right.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_02: That's their that's their great worm ability.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that these guys are kind of killer.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_02: I think they are kind of meant to have a little bit of a a little bit of a spooky vibe.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because they are the the guardians of hidden places, which is to say a lot of crypts and stuff.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_02: So pre-MC3, they are described as living in swamps and marshes, but afterwards it seems that they are more so relegated to living in whichever crypt or tomb or other assorted, you know, site that the celestial bureaucracy has assigned them to guard.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_02: Again with the the reproduction thing, um, often these sites are passed down through families, uh, it says, so it's not uncommon for the same lineage of dragons to have been guarding a particular crypt for many years.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_02: I don't know where they're getting these kids from, but okay.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_02: It is it is kind of it is kind of fun.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_02: Just the local village.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_02: It is kind of fun to imagine like a tradition where maybe like a younger Pan Lung comes to like a an old tomb or whatever with like an older one.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_04: It's it's fun, but they just need to decide which way they're doing it.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess, yeah.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: But uh apparently it is commonly passed down through families, um, however that works.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_02: They are also sometimes, which is to say, they have a 25% chance to be attended by uh human servants, which this is crazy.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_02: They like I feel like a lot of a lot of the the lung dragons do have very like a very consistent theme.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_02: And I guess these guys kind of do too, but a lot of it is very it feels very classical in the way that's like elements and you know stuff like that.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_02: And then for this one, they were like, let's just let's let's put a little let's put a little little something something in there.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_02: But let's spin on it.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because these human servants are usually these spirits of people who have been unfaithful to or otherwise betrayed their spouse in life.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_02: Um so the gods sometimes punish these people by binding them to the service of a pan lung traditionally for the number of years equivalent to the number of tears they caused their spouse to shed.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_02: Which is so it's so funny.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's messed up, but it's so funny.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_04: It's very um poetic, too.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's so poetic.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_02: It's almost like how in like Greek myths that feature the underworld that would have those like very specific punishments that had very much to do with the character of the person in their life or like you know, the particular things they did to make the gods angry.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_02: It's got that kind of vibe where it's like you cheated on your wife or whatever, and you you caused her to cry a thousand tears.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_02: So now you're gonna serve this dragon in this fuck-ass dank crypt for a thousand years, you know.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_02: And despite these being the spirits of people, these minions are like they have fully crossed over into the primaterial plane where the dragon lives and are corporeal and not considered undead, though they also do not age, they kind of are just in stasis.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: Um, which like don't worry about it.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_04: It's magic.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_02: I'm laughing, but also this is a horror movie.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_02: So the Pan Lung commands these servants as per the dominate person spell, and they will fight to the whatever death is awaiting them uh to defend their dragon master.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_02: The favorite foods of the Pan Lung are fruits and vegetables often grown in gardens tended to by their minions.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_02: Same.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_02: Which I can't decide if that's if that's kind of cute or like horrifying.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_02: Like very grim.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_02: Like, I want to know what the day-to-day relationship is like here.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_04: Like, is it like do they treat like obviously they're in servitude for their crimes, but like do they treat them well?
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like and they and they obviously can compel and control them, but I am imagining that sometimes it is kind of just like a little bit of a post-prison release, like work assistance thing where it's like, okay, you have this person who like we're assigning to you this person who like cheated on their spouse or whatever, just rolls up like hey, and the dragon's just like, hey, I need you to go do this.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_02: Go go get this out of the shed and go, you know, whatever.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_02: Like, not necessarily command, but yeah, like it is just funny to imagine these various dragons and also like their their minions and associates and what have you, just in like workplace sketch comedies.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, because of the whole bureaucracy thing.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_02: Like, I actually very much want that, yes.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_02: That's where my mind was at.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_02: Wizards, this is the next show.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_02: Wizards is doing exactly.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_02: So Pan Lung are generally indifferent to most other lung dragons, with the exception of the Tian Lung or the Celestial Dragons.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_02: No mention is made of this in 3.5, but prior to that, the Pang Lung were so jealous of the reverence and high station given to the Tian Lung that they would sometimes attack them in a jealous rage.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_02: God damn it.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_02: Um, which would cause a fight that lasted for weeks and would usually result in the Tian Lung being victorious because they are categorically generally stronger than a Panlung.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, they were so jealous of them that sometimes they would just pick fights with them, which is very funny.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_02: But like I'd be mad too if I had to live in a dank crypt with a bunch of people who cheated on their spouses, and then there's these guys over here that are literally called celestial.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_02: You know, I might be kind of mad too, you know.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_04: Like, especially because I'm like only one step below them theoretically.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_02: Like, I might well, this isn't like this isn't.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_04: Or well, I meant like uh my I guess the way I'm picturing it is that like Tian Lung are revered above all, and then everyone else other than the you are sort of like on the same level.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's pretty, it is kind of like that.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_02: So the last lung dragons that we're gonna talk about are the Tian Lung or the Celestial Dragons.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_02: They are the Lords of Weather, besides rain, because that's kind of the the domain of the Chian Lung or the Chang Lung, sorry.
- 1:27:35SPEAKER_02: And they are regarded as the most favored officials of the celestial bureaucracy, which is a reputation that they don't try to dissuade.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_02: Um like it doesn't just it doesn't describe them as being like necessarily particularly full of themselves, but I think that they're just like if other people say that, they're kind of like, okay.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_02: Anyway, sure, yeah.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_04: They they can take a comp.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_04: They won't fish for them, but they can take one.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_02: As with many other of the long dragons we've discussed today, they have long serpentine bodies, usually in a bright shade of yellow, though in 3.5 orange and light green are also possible in their color spectrum.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_02: They have multicolored manes and big multicolored antler-shaped horns.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_02: I like them.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_02: Golden beards and the perpetual aroma of cherry blossoms.
- 1:28:27SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:28:29SPEAKER_04: They smell like that very specific bath and body works.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they smell like Japanese cherry blossoms.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_04: That's so cool.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_02: Which honestly, now that I'm reading it out loud, I'm starting to understand the jealousy that the Pan Lung have.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_02: Because like you're down here in a dank crypt, and then these guys over here that smell like cherry blossoms and are called celestial, and everyone else loves them so much.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'd be mad too.
- 1:28:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_03: I get the jealousy.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_02: And also, again, say it with me.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_02: Magical brain pearl.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_02: Magical brain pearl.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_02: Magical brain pearl.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_02: I wasn't cared.
- 1:29:05SPEAKER_02: I didn't say it with you.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 1:29:10SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I have to airlift my son out of the way.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_02: And they are lawful neutral and they speak their own language as well as Orin in 3.5.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_02: So Tian Lung are the only lung dragon associated at all with fire, as they have a fire-based breath weapon and learn a variety of different fire spells as they age.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_02: They can use control weather a number of times a day equal to twice their age level.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_02: So, like in the case of some of the other ones that learn control weather, like the Shed Lung, I think they can only use it like three times a day.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_02: Whereas these guys can use it quite a bit more, which is befitting of their sort of position as being the every other weather besides rain guys.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_02: So some of these spell abilities they gain include Firestorm, Pyrotechnics, Suggestion, Sunburst, and Meteor Swarm.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_03: Meteor swarm.
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_03: Why not?
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_02: That's you know what?
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_02: That is a, I guess, just a very rare and exotic form of weather.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_02: It's space weather.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, space weather.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_02: Space weather.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_02: Um, they are often accompanied by air elementals who will fight to the death to protect the Tianlung.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_02: They are considered, as I said before, the most favored officials of the celestial bureaucracy and called the quote rulers of Dragonkind in 3.5, though I'm not sure like they didn't have a they didn't have like a company breakdown in there.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_02: So I'm not sure exactly like how the how that breakdown actually uh they have they have it in there and then you then you realize it's just a pyramid scheme.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_02: Um point one percent of earners.
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_02: Um and befitting their stations, they live in lavish mansions atop high mountains or on cloud banks, which is super super cool.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_02: They enjoy eating pearls and opals and look kindly upon mortals who present them in hopes of being blessed with good weather.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_02: They have the highest average intelligence of all lung dragons and are said to be very noble in character, if somewhat rigid.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_02: The Bahamas, if you will.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they are they are very they are very Bahamut coated, actually.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so that's that's lung dragons.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_04: I think I will say, I think you did a lot better of a job uh than I did.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_04: I we were still trying to find our stride in research.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying like I did a terrible job, but you know, I I feel like it'll stick in my head better this time, probably.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_02: Uh you know, I I did also manage to find a lot of like interesting, you know, real world context.
- 1:31:50SPEAKER_02: Even if some of it, like some of it wasn't included in this episode, a lot of it was also kind of real world context for like just myself a little bit.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_02: And you know, to say kind of even if it wasn't presented directly in context of this episode, a lot of these, in fact, I would go so far as to say probably actually every single one of these variations is based on like a real, you know, dragon of myth, either in reference to kind of their appearance or you know, whatever.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_02: Or their personality or abilities, something like that.
- 1:32:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, there is a despite the the usual appearance of like a lot of dragons in Chinese myth, there is one that looks exactly like the Lee Lung, right that I was like, whoa, but I couldn't I couldn't go and include that would have to be like some of them, some short form content or something.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_02: But I did think it was it was really neat to see like the very precise, you know, mythological origins of some of these, as opposed to like in in some things where it's like they kind of just make variations to make more of them, which I'm never gonna be opposed to more dragons, right?
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_04: But you know, some of them it's like there there was actual reasoning behind this, and like it ends up sort of like even though like obviously there were sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen and they'd never discuss things.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_04: The overall part is clear that they had even with adding things on, it just added to it and not like distracted away.
- 1:33:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, where it feels like sometimes with dragons they're like, all right, guys, what what other colors can we put in?
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_04: We got a purple one this time.
- 1:33:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's um that's long dragons again.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Taylor.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_02: Uh you're good.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for listening.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_03: Don't forget to follow us on our various social media platforms.
- 1:33:35SPEAKER_03: Uh spread the word to your friends who like dragons.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_04: Your friends who know a lot about Chinese mythology.
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_02: I feel like I feel like that would be a circle.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_02: A circle, probably.
- 1:33:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, hey.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_03: Then just branch that circle out a little bit, get other people interested in dragons.
- 1:33:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and uh we would really appreciate that.
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_03: We would.
- 1:33:57SPEAKER_04: If you have anything you would like to suggest as a topic for us to cover, feel free to email us at dungeonpedia.podcast at gmail.com or reach out to us on our Discord.

- 1:34:14SPEAKER_02: Dude, if I had the pleasure.
- 1:34:16SPEAKER_02: I would want to commission people to make so many like sitcom style DD shows.
- 1:34:22SPEAKER_02: Like I want, I want, I want the other thing.
- 1:34:26SPEAKER_02: But it's like I'm gonna think about it right now.
