- 0:40listener, I said thank you for being here.

- 0:54200th episode that you've listened.
- 0:56Just so thankful for you as you've listened throughout the
- 1:00now, a year and a year and a half that we've been doing the
- 1:02This podcast, we've had coaches from literally around the world
- 1:06and we've noticed, we've noticed a common theme, right?
- 1:10Selflessness, nothing getting in their way dogged attitude.
- 1:15It's just amazing. The, the the gumption and what
- 1:19coaches do and go through. And today, we've got a really
- 1:24special coach with a really special situation that kind of
- 1:27embodies all of that together. So, help me, welcome today's
- 1:31guest from Dayton Kentucky High School, mr.
- 1:35Jesse hurts. Jesse, how are you sir?
- 1:37Very good. Thanks don't.
- 1:38Oh great. Thanks though.
- 1:39Awesome. I'm so happy.
- 1:42You're here, man. We we've been planning this for
- 1:44a while and then, you know, my travel got in the way and school
- 1:48and everything else, but I've been looking forward to sitting
- 1:51down and talking with you, man. This is, I think this is going
- 1:54to help expand coaches Vision. If you will out there that
- 2:00listen to today and the things that you and your RAM have done
- 2:03recently. So the reason we invited Jessi
- 2:06besides he's an awesome track coach that's always like a
- 2:09prerequisite for a track coach. You get to be on the on the
- 2:11podcast. But I was perusing through
- 2:14Facebook about I guess it was probably two to three months ago
- 2:18now and an official who I'm so terrible that I don't remember
- 2:23the official that posted it. Let me get us.
- 2:25Is that who? Okay, thank you.
- 2:26I'm so I felt so bad that I don't get to give props to the
- 2:29guy that helped put it together buddy.
- 2:31Dennis so So buddy posted in the u.s.
- 2:34ATF officials Facebook page about this High School dating
- 2:38high school track meet but there was something special about it.
- 2:42There was no track. Now you might think that's a
- 2:46prerequisite but we're going to learn today from Jesse how he
- 2:50didn't let the absence of a track stop him from hosting a
- 2:54home track me. So Jesse talk to us.
- 2:57First of all, give us a overview of the high school.
- 3:00How many students? No track.
- 3:03Was there ever a track? How long have you been the coach
- 3:05there and kind of lead us up to this?
- 3:07This interesting track meet you did.
- 3:08Alright. School is a small.
- 3:10Small class in high school were about 400 students know track.
- 3:14Never had a track Here. Track facilities are pretty much
- 3:17an ill track has always been a very popular sport here, very
- 3:23successful track history. Here are trackage waiter for
- 3:26Wow, 25 years, a very big, but go back to a minute.
- 3:30He's never had a track this whole career.
- 3:32He coached here, he's coached did saying Henry for the track,
- 3:35he coached assignment came with me the past 15 years before I
- 3:37came here, never had a track and he has days.
- 3:40But once a champion, I think anybody out there and he's an
- 3:42amazing amazing coach, but the street meat itself was easy
- 3:46because I grew up here in Dayton, and our workouts are
- 3:49around the block where we always had Maria.
- 3:51The track meet at our campus is to block campus.
- 3:54We have our elementary school in our high school.
- 3:57But in between, there is a big old Paper Factory.
- 4:00So, around the block, the Paper Factory Elementary.
- 4:02There is 600 meters. So we did a lot of 600 meter
- 4:07repeats, a lot of training, there is where we got other
- 4:10stuff, it's uphill, it's downhill.
- 4:12It's it's it's different. You know it's not a huge upgrade
- 4:16but it's significant. So with the street meat itself,
- 4:21they talked about it for 30, 40 years, you know?
- 4:24The old man coach banquet was guys always talked about it.
- 4:27I coach with him for 10 years when I came back from college
- 4:29and I'm bringing from cyma getting and we talked about it
- 4:32then. And so I came back here two
- 4:34years ago. Go to be the head football coach
- 4:37and took the head track coach. Obviously, he's a package deal
- 4:40and so my assistant who was assistant for the old guy and I
- 4:43work from, you know, 15 years, 20 years ago, said Brittany your
- 4:46back. Let's do the street meat and
- 4:49I'll see, you know what, why not?
- 4:52We wanted. We already started, we wanted
- 4:54to, we have no facilities. We have no jump pad.
- 4:56We have. No, I mean have we have a
- 4:57street, we got side, we Market Street, the cars coming for her
- 5:00out of the way, and we put them back on the goodness.
- 5:03We're ready. We're right by the flood wall
- 5:04down. So, most of our street around
- 5:07the school is just a few cars. Might be a student coming off.
- 5:10Campus might be employees to make them up yet, but, you know,
- 5:12a parent pick-up. But that whole lot of traffic
- 5:14but it's enough that we got stopped half dozen twelve times
- 5:16that, you know, to a practice session to car, you know, game
- 5:19off game on. That's what it makes me think of
- 5:21that old street hockey in streak, right?
- 5:24Always came on. Yeah.
- 5:31But long story short, we've always trained in the streets
- 5:35and always working the streets, but we don't have a Scylla T.
- 5:37So I wanted a long jump in, I'm a big, triple jump nut.
- 5:41I love the triple jump from an amazing event, that's just I can
- 5:44never do it. Never drink because I can't do
- 5:46it now but I lost success with it with a really good coach out
- 5:50of Simon Kenton before I came here.
- 5:52So, when I got home, I don't jump it.
- 5:53And I went to Administration, and right outside of weight room
- 5:56is an area about 15 feet, 14, feet wide.
- 6:01To the curb in the street there and it's probably about 50 60
- 6:05feet long but it runs along the outside of the campus like the
- 6:08street, an extra weight room and the sidewalk kind of else kind
- 6:12of L-shaped their cherry wood elves.
- 6:15He goes up to the waiting room, you can go straight and walk to
- 6:17the grass so I just grabbed my ass.
- 6:44Is it like the next day? Some other day and next day and
- 6:47a couple people grow by its coach.
- 6:48What are you doing? So I'm working on a long jump in
- 6:52here so what are you gonna do? Is I'm gonna take this thing
- 6:55out. So now big I said it's going to
- 6:56be nine feet wide by about 30 feet long.
- 6:59How deep I said I hope you about a foot job self, are you down
- 7:02there? And he goes, you know my shovel
- 7:04or what I got. 30, 40, football, guys, wearing this out with my
- 7:07eyes. I'm ready to go because you're
- 7:09crazy. Hold off, I got a bobcat, I'll
- 7:12be back. Good.
- 7:13Yeah, I came back the next day and I thought he'd be out there,
- 7:17instead the city out there, the bobcat City guy showed up and
- 7:20they start thinking, they see how they heard about it.
- 7:22So they all showed up and we dug it all out with a bobcat.
- 7:26It was amazing, everybody pitched in and from there it
- 7:29took off, there we went. Wow, look at this.
- 7:32We could have long jump triple jump here.
- 7:34Yeah, in the baseball to our campus is really nice because
- 7:37our schools. Next, the flow of all, we had
- 7:40the 600 block raised around the elementary next to his ear.
- 7:43And then there's a big city park with baseball field.
- 7:46Softball field. Tennis courts, basketball,
- 7:48courts on stuff. We can throw a discus right in
- 7:51the baseball field. There's our cage.
- 7:55So we want the dirt. I got a stick and string square
- 8:01feet. It wasn't my feet and I got it,
- 8:02I made money, you know, made my circle, and come back to spray
- 8:05paint the circle cutter. Vectors in scraping across
- 8:09baseball field there. And we through discourse out
- 8:11there, they'll say no brainer. He was a great shot but we don't
- 8:14the street. We have a lot of those sidewalks
- 8:16side streets. They're selling several laps
- 8:19around the school, big grass, Lots.
- 8:21There's a great band, a big circle right down the street.
- 8:24As you were building these first start, I love that the
- 8:28superintendent. Just had a lot of trust in you
- 8:30and said, go. I also love that you didn't
- 8:32second-guess. I'm like, oh, okay, and you just
- 8:34went and did it like before he can change his mind.
- 8:36I love that as you were building, these are the kids
- 8:41like getting excited or they kind of like, oh man, they want
- 8:44to know what crazy old herpes is doing.
- 8:46Yeah, those are the mad scientist.
- 8:47What are you doing? I'm doing catch a giant sandbox.
- 8:51Big cat box, all these stray cats and come over here?
- 9:05The community has, it's a challenge Community.
- 9:07Very challenging Community economically.
- 9:09We have, we have some issues and we don't have a whole lot of
- 9:13nice new facilities and new stuff and we bring this stuff in
- 9:17the kids. Get excited, might be really
- 9:18locker rooms and I got it with football team.
- 9:20That was a huge on taking but we had all alumni.
- 9:23Everybody donate it, they came into the work, it cost five
- 9:26thousand dollars, four hundred thousand dollars with the work
- 9:29but but the new sentence gets him.
- 9:31Excited, some new, some different, but again, what's
- 9:33I've been here two years so they're still trying to figure
- 9:35me out, right? I was here at born and raised
- 9:37here. Graduated when the college
- 9:39played football came home, kosher another ten years and
- 9:42then left another school, been gone, 15 years, had a lot of
- 9:46success out there. And now, I'm back home now,
- 9:49that's kind of the source. I will get into that kind of
- 9:51like yourself because don't try to fit in any way.
- 9:53I am. Yeah, my family name.
- 9:55My whole family was here and you know, I'm the youngest of three.
- 9:59And so, that's pretty much what it is.
- 10:01Yeah, but again, we're going to just kind of go around We Face
- 10:05we can practice things we can do right as we're talking about.
- 10:07Hey, if we didn't treat me this way or we can do it and then we
- 10:10kind of just progressed from there.
- 10:12So and then we just pull the trigger and took off.
- 10:14Did you when you? So let's go over the events that
- 10:17you did. So you got to Camp it.
- 10:19So you got a long jump and triple jump, I heard the
- 10:23baseball field for discus. I heard kind of off the sidewalk
- 10:27into the grass for shot. Put that correct and you got a
- 10:31600 M Loop so there you can do. Do four by six hundreds, there's
- 10:35probably 100 meter or maybe, I don't know, maybe I shouldn't
- 10:36assume what kind of straightaway or hurdles, but I went and I
- 10:40called coach Bank. Leave me about my case, might go
- 10:43guy and as I need to wheel the wheel, so I got the old wheel
- 10:48out and I just start experimenting.
- 10:49Okay. So I'll walk down with.
- 10:50Okay, it's a centimeter. We always wonder how big this we
- 10:52did. I met industry faced growing up?
- 10:53I mean, it was pretty course. Folder metaphasic, kills, all
- 10:56these things. How far we go his guests to me.
- 10:59Well, I guess we have 600. Metres 100 metres is.
- 11:02The thing is a monster. And so I got here.
- 11:04I was like what? So, this is me things, either,
- 11:15there's a common starting line, and we're moving, are the
- 11:17timer's, everything else. So eyes are walking things off
- 11:20and in the way we did it growing up, we always land backwards.
- 11:24It's Gonna attract yd, run counterclockwise.
- 11:26But here we are trying to clockwise.
- 11:28We always train on this block. Is this way?
- 11:29We always did. So, when I first started it all
- 11:31up I said it up going clockwise and I was like I don't like it
- 11:36at all. This doesn't make sense at all.
- 11:38To me you knows this track really good the other way.
- 11:41So you know, It's all right, and I end up come up with instead of
- 11:44four by eight grand for by 12 two laps, right?
- 11:48Yeah, two maps words, everything is changing right down the
- 11:52middle of the street between the school and Elementary my flat
- 11:54Street there. The Third Street in, right in
- 11:56the street. I put down, start and finish
- 11:59line for all the relays and we've put cones off.
- 12:02What comes off. Either way, that her Shane's
- 12:04ends. Gabrielle selz window, blind,
- 12:06everything was open. There was no by an exchange,
- 12:08they're worried about their Lanes, no spikes or I could get
- 12:12away. So, No ladies, no spikes, no
- 12:13blocks. You know its first meet of the
- 12:15Year Chile, we get cold cool weather out here, so it's
- 12:19printing is not very conducive at that time of year, you know,
- 12:21100 mega stone Harold's. Let's not push it.
- 12:24So I want to send a 4x8 do me for by 12.
- 12:28We did the set of four by four the end.
- 12:30We have a 4 by 6 which was great.
- 12:33We did the mile the half with into my own, did the quarter
- 12:38mile? Which is interesting because it
- 12:40was start up hill. When you come across a fast rate
- 12:43and you finish down everything, if it's a little downhill grade,
- 12:45when you say Court about an actual like close to 400 meters
- 12:48or just 4 meters. Okay.
- 12:50So you measured that part out so and that's the way it is
- 12:52startling stuff. Yeah.
- 12:53Okay. Right.
- 12:55The starting line would move to where it is moved to do, with
- 12:58Corner were starting on our with, and I want to spray paint
- 13:00and everything. And the city worked with me.
- 13:02Great. I went to the city.
- 13:04Told me I want to do. Yeah, they said they didn't ban.
- 13:07I said, sign everything, two days before they called.
- 13:10Me said we got a problem. Oh, no.
- 13:12We're on a major State Interstate here for a bus route
- 13:14comes through and they said, you got to move your meet at the
- 13:18state route. We can't close it.
- 13:20I went I don't think you boys man.
- 13:22But two days we can't change it. Well, till they're ready to go
- 13:30and fight the fight and they came to the door and they
- 13:33figured out, but something simple.
- 13:36Well, they make sure all the cars were towed or gone.
- 13:42But in size up, but no to people's cars be ready to move
- 13:45is just the other biggest fear. Sure.
- 13:47Discard there's my one in the car and get out but a few cars
- 13:51have driveways, but they'll tell the story later, we had a car
- 13:53plot round Red Mill. The meat was kind of scary.
- 13:55Oh no. Then we did a four by one
- 14:11shuttle. So I use like, for example, the
- 14:14Finish Line was the crosswalks, okay?
- 14:17So the front line of the crosswalk there, as you come
- 14:19down, I had to go over and tape it and repaint the myself a real
- 14:22nice and clear there. So but that was our finish line
- 14:24for they come and finish line. The starting line was a Mark and
- 14:26I don't rape anything across there.
- 14:29Look. I mean it wasn't like oh crap
- 14:31you like you know but it wasn't wasn't but the four by one we
- 14:35did a shuttle so the enemy Street the crosswalks where our
- 14:40take off for lunch that we've got there so I put them on the
- 14:42back. When they hit the front one, you
- 14:43can go, we, because I'm illustrating two teams at a
- 14:46time. It might have been the event of
- 14:47the day. Why people love it line the
- 14:50streets, it was like race cars, man, you're going crazy.
- 14:52There's been begging for sprinting and just it was really
- 14:55neat, neat setup. I was like a Shuttle Endeavour
- 14:58kids, you know, and we still pass.
- 15:00The Baton said had the past but I wasn't buying something from
- 15:03each other. What other events that she said,
- 15:05no hurdles, which as a hers that hurts.
- 15:08So basically I was expecting a 600 or something next year, I'm
- 15:12bringing on On the Steeplechase. Oh yes.
- 15:16Got it figured out. I'd met my superintendent gonna
- 15:18be, he's digging around a track because guess what do you do
- 15:20about the kids? Fall into your hands on the
- 15:22ground. Track were on the street from
- 15:26the old locker room. All stacked up in the back
- 15:29interlocking like a puzzle. As I'll put those down.
- 15:30He went. Yeah, good.
- 15:32Somebody a couple inflatable swimming pools.
- 15:34Ha ha. Ha.
- 15:44Exactly. So, it's a cell point, you know,
- 15:54just don't ya. So Jesse, this is a lot of work
- 15:59and, you know, track, which has many, many, many positives.
- 16:02Right? I mean, we're in the track
- 16:04World. There is no greater sport than
- 16:07track and field. Maybe football is a close second
- 16:10sensor football as coach that we can track and field, you know,
- 16:13one of the maybe sometimes negatives for track and field as
- 16:16we're really technical, right? Like the 100-meter dash.
- 16:20I mean when you go to I just came back from it.
- 16:23Aw championships. And right now when you're
- 16:25listening to this we're in the middle of the Olympic trials.
- 16:27They're measuring out. The 100 meter dash to the point
- 16:310 1. The, the hash marks for the
- 16:33hurdles, the Steeplechase Heights, The Exchange, I mean
- 16:37we're real real Technical and you know 99% of the tracks out
- 16:43there that are, you know, that are out there real.
- 16:45You know, tracks are measured correctly and sometimes we're so
- 16:49traditional and track and field, we say, well you can't do it for
- 16:52by one as a shuttle. Jesse.
- 16:53Come on. That's not a 4 by 1.
- 16:55That's a, that's a shuttle. So, you shouldn't even do that
- 16:57because you can't qualify for state or our conference or
- 17:00anything with this stuff you put in so much work.
- 17:03Why? Why every meeting you go to the
- 17:08same? That's what I discovered
- 17:11everything. I go to, I get the same events
- 17:13in the same order and get the same schools with the same kids.
- 17:16And most the time we get the same result, it's over and over
- 17:20again in the kids nose. But not in this years ago, I was
- 17:22at Simon Kenton. We had a county Championship,
- 17:25you know, it's just the three County schools and those Dixie
- 17:29Simon Kenton Scott. It was a great little try meat.
- 17:32Instead of going all everyone's Invitational these days,
- 17:34everybody's gonna get the money. Great.
- 17:35I got to make money and Earth itself but those are great meat
- 17:38but the other counties around is all headache.
- 17:40A full County championship. And another guy said, man, we
- 17:43gotta make our full cast, don't do it, don't change the format,
- 17:46you do, you're gonna regret it guy's brains just another meat.
- 17:49All right, but we did it and it became just a traveling trophy
- 17:52when he attends all bright orange.
- 17:54That's pretty much it on the evil fun thing, the kids like
- 17:56hearing all your kids, it's time.
- 17:58We can add 150 kids on the track team.
- 17:59Wow, I had a dinosaur boys and girls.
- 18:02It was amazing out there. We had a numbers out that it's a
- 18:04giant school with 2,000 students.
- 18:07But I think the more we can all run that meet, you know, it's so
- 18:10hard and meet every other day. I have a meeting.
- 18:12I'm said, coach somewhere. It is me, that means, right, I
- 18:14think coach drag is I'm gonna house Logistics.
- 18:17I moved kids, I scheduled events.
- 18:19I did everything else I coach my relay teams and that's what I
- 18:22got to have them. But I lost my train of thought.
- 18:27I was asking the why to put all this work into?
- 18:28Yeah, it's different. It's just say it's the same old
- 18:31me. The street and race.
- 18:40Everybody's worried about their time.
- 18:41My PR is my this my that drives me nuts.
- 18:45Let's just go race. Yeah, race in a time, take care
- 18:48of themselves yet, amazing. Did you notice that that's a
- 18:51good point because again, you're right, we get because everything
- 18:54is measured the exact same. We run the events in the same
- 18:56format, maybe most time. I realize are running the same
- 18:59legs and things like that. Did you notice now that the kids
- 19:04they didn't have a 400 meter dash?
- 19:05They had a one-lap, which is Maybe Be a roughly a six hundred
- 19:08meter dash. Did you notice them focusing
- 19:10more on beating the kid next to them versus?
- 19:12What's my simply all that? Yeah, we got so much positive.
- 19:15Therefore all the kids because they're coming in, they're like
- 19:18oh my God, the Dayton Dayton itself is in the area.
- 19:22We're not. How do I say nobody comes to
- 19:28dating? There's not a destination here,
- 19:30we're kind of a dead end. Once you get in the day near
- 19:33goes out to Route 8, which is going to summer grow which is
- 19:36been Landslide and closed. It goes.
- 19:37Nowhere above us is a very prominent down for Thomas.
- 19:42They don't come down the hill, we're on the river, you know
- 19:46about, they want to hear about D.
- 19:48So sometimes in always had the best rap sometimes.
- 19:52So the big thing about with kids are like, we're going to go And
- 19:54the streets of Dayton, I had friends at other schools.
- 19:56That said, if I brought my kids on their they'd fire me, guess
- 20:01shorty, come on the streets of Dane.
- 20:02Are you and how are you nuts? I'm like, what are you talking
- 20:05about it? We're just like you guys.
- 20:07All right? You know, it's not that bad down
- 20:09here. Yeah, I guess people have an
- 20:10image to its guns and knives and drugs and band to hold.
- 20:13No, no, it's amazing. Little blue collar town, right?
- 20:17On the river. But again, it's what you hear
- 20:19about nobody's ever come here. It's always been that way.
- 20:23So again, what am I selling points was just trying to get
- 20:25people to say, hey, come, come here at down.
- 20:27Come see, it's a wonderful spot, right?
- 20:29We'll go there later, but So what was the reaction when you?
- 20:34You must have have three, four? Five.
- 20:37Couldn't get a date that you have.
- 20:39I need schools. Exactly.
- 20:41I reached out and I date schools, jump on right away and
- 20:44I stopped there and I was afraid of chasing the morgue.
- 20:46I know I can handle. I was like that's kind of our
- 20:48think I'm a problem. Yeah that's more than I thought
- 20:50right? And we're big program.
- 20:52Sign McInnes big program they can as I left here.
- 20:54Thanks. So that's they're all small
- 20:56schools and they brought about 20 to 30 kids each and it was
- 21:00great. We think we can handle 12 to 15
- 21:02schools and what we're shooting for this year.
- 21:04What was the other athletes and other coaches reaction at the
- 21:08end of the meat? When they got done throwing the
- 21:09discus on the baseball and the relays and everybody, I got zero
- 21:13negative feedback on anything out there except for the disc
- 21:17has a few parents. You heard chirping complaining?
- 21:20I can't be the throne discus off the dirt, we're like hello
- 21:23street meat, you know, the alternative is, we don't throw
- 21:28the discus. Is there a major struggle?
- 21:32He's really good. He's around her up.
- 21:34You do estate is very good. Thrower, he struggled coaches.
- 21:37A chance. Look, good overcoming.
- 21:38Yeah, overcoming its this this the playing field.
- 21:42We have, let's go play on it, right?
- 21:44I mean it's like did anybody, you mentioned your discus
- 21:48thrower, who was really good and struggled that anybody
- 21:51inversely, did anybody like Excel?
- 21:53Because there was no timings Aya T like it was just competition
- 21:56at that point. I mean I was first meal of the
- 21:58year. I know the kid from Grant County
- 22:00is really good. Thrower he came out and still
- 22:01kick but it didn't faze him at all.
- 22:06I just because these days I'm uh, a second or third heat.
- 22:32If I, you know, you never has any dogs chasing the clock.
- 22:35So are we so worried about time my time on my mark?
- 22:38Oh, I know we're about as a kid, did I win?
- 22:44See, I like, I'd like that attitude because, you know, one
- 22:47of the drawbacks on track and field and as it relates to
- 22:51culture and Society. If someone doesn't set the world
- 22:55record, it's almost like it doesn't matter, right?
- 22:59Oh well, they won. But you know what?
- 23:00Time. Do they run the 100-meter?
- 23:02Like maybe at the trials? This upcoming two weeks, maybe
- 23:06the winner is going to run 977 and someone's gonna be like
- 23:08yeah. But the world's records 95 or
- 23:10whatever you know. And instead of where's the fun
- 23:12in that? Yeah because we don't do that
- 23:14with any other sport. Let's let's use football.
- 23:17Running back runs. 120 yards. It was like oh wow broke 100
- 23:20yards I guess that's a big deal. 120 yards doesn't get close to
- 23:24the record. It's not the state record for
- 23:26rushing yards in a game or the NFL, but no one calls that out
- 23:30they just go. Oh wow.
- 23:30Had a great game hundred. Twenty Twenty Yards where if a
- 23:33sprinter on the elite level runs, 97 98, we should be like,
- 23:36well, I'm an there, that's good like wow and they would all
- 23:40right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think it's
- 23:44just his nature of the Beast. It's just we've become a, it's
- 23:47more technical support the about technology involved now, right?
- 23:51At the timing. Is everything, you know, did you
- 23:55uhand time this? I assume.
- 23:57Yes. Oh heck, yes.
- 23:58Yeah. The time.
- 24:30She's attract nut and share kids were graduating college has had
- 24:34so much going on. I came in and or any male
- 24:37college and they're all graduate.
- 24:38Now, thank God. She just didn't wonder if she
- 24:41just wanted out, but she wanted him gone to anybody's wife him.
- 24:44The football job. She's like, I was like, you
- 24:46know, let's go next. Remember, in the back in, I love
- 24:50her. She's attracting that she's kids
- 24:51are, she's empty nester now. She's got four more years of
- 24:53retirement. We get her back in the track.
- 24:55She's amazing. But but she is a great
- 24:59background. She's attractive fish.
- 25:00Well, she was my clerk it real easy.
- 25:04She can start getting set up. We hired a mile track Edge as
- 25:08his assistant and really smart Ren Faire forever, and she'd all
- 25:12the awards and scoring. We have hired her back in as
- 25:15another advocate for student, having a retirement position.
- 25:17And I said to her, she's like no brainer.
- 25:19And then my assistant coach, he's a starter and a fish
- 25:23himself. Nice.
- 25:24So come meet that I looked around my golf cart on the way.
- 25:30Lottery on the crazy guy who has this.
- 25:34All right, great. What up what would you do?
- 25:38Looking back on it. Now, as you start, you know, you
- 25:41evaluated, because now you're away from it, right?
- 25:43And you're thinking about next year, what would you do
- 25:45differently? Whether it's enhancements or,
- 25:47you know I wouldn't throw one the dirt for discus, I don't
- 25:50know anything you thought about for next year.
- 25:52I mean honestly. No.
- 25:54I mean, adding to it really right now, I mean, the meat
- 25:56itself I thought was complete success.
- 25:58There was not complete throwing dirt, if I can get a portable
- 26:00radio, Ring, you know, but between now and then that'd be,
- 26:02that'd be wonderful. That's the only option I have
- 26:05but you know, kids don't expect. Nature becomes treat me.
- 26:07I'm thrown off the dirt so that way got to the infield, where I
- 26:10practice up, that's what that's what the race calls for.
- 26:12I don't wanna change that kind of stuff, I like giving it, you
- 26:14know, that's what it's all about.
- 26:16No, come on, just kind of using what you have it and going with
- 26:18it. But adding on the Steeplechase
- 26:20it's just a sell them. One more schools because I
- 26:22realized, hey, I can make a little money off this we made.
- 26:241,200 bucks, was all done. It's like we actually made a
- 26:26profit of $500. This is amazing.
- 26:30And we gained a nice long, jump Pit and the school bought me a
- 26:32long. Jump pit cover is amazing.
- 26:36So now I got four still do. But next year, what I want to do
- 26:42is again, I'm trying to sell date.
- 26:45I'm trying to sell our town. That's how I pray about. 200
- 26:49people showed that day to come see their Spectators and other
- 26:52their families, when doing find their been late before, right?
- 26:55All event is what they've heard about dating.
- 26:57So they come down, they say it's a wonderful great gold panel
- 26:59community. So, this year, I would expand
- 27:01it. I want to bring all the
- 27:02businesses into the president park has a giant area and have I
- 27:05could taste of Dayton. I'm such a booth up, most apply
- 27:09online business up. There comes set your business up
- 27:12so they come from us. They can walk around to the
- 27:13park, get something to eat care of his restaurants to his going
- 27:17on our Down and just kind of just making more of a community
- 27:19of that. So if something happened today,
- 27:22let's put a pin in that for just things.
- 27:24I do want to come back but you got to tell us.
- 27:26So I thought this was the name of the meat but this I guess
- 27:29this was the slogan. So it's street.
- 27:32Meat is the name of it. Was the inaugural Street, me
- 27:34right? But tell us what your slogan was
- 27:36for the meet again. I'm trying to sell and make
- 27:40money. Okay?
- 27:41How can I sell t-shirts? I say kicking some asphalt and
- 27:51his eyes lit up so my guys no-brainer and then they said,
- 27:54they'll never get it approved right away.
- 27:56How does that get approved today's world, exactly.
- 28:10Don't buy more than 100 shirts, you won't sell them.
- 28:13You'll have extra shirts and we struggled on, say first annual,
- 28:16you'll eat those shirts. Man, I need to buy 300 of these.
- 28:19Yeah, they're going to sell you sold out like the first hour by
- 28:2310:00. We're out of here.
- 28:24Yeah, yeah. So I'll be making sure I'd buy
- 28:27300 next year. Absolutely.
- 28:29Absolutely. I can be easy.
- 28:31Money makers. Beat me in the street or
- 28:33something like that. Yeah, so yeah.
- 28:35But yeah. So, You're from there.
- 28:49I mean, when you and I talked, you know, about a month ago
- 28:52about setting this up, it's pretty evidence your love for
- 28:58your community. So talk to us.
- 29:00You said you're the youngest of three you grew up, you went to
- 29:03school there. Talk to me about the community
- 29:06and how you started there in high school.
- 29:08And I guess you said, you went away for college.
- 29:10And came back to see my friends from high school here, back in
- 29:14the 60s, I think my dad was 60, 60 and my mom.
- 29:17Was 61. Yeah.
- 29:19Okay, my dad was a football hero football star and it is down and
- 29:24my brother, my brother, Jose football stud, big track guy
- 29:31went on to college Minnesota with the Marine Corps come back
- 29:35again, had a great career but other brother was a
- 29:37cross-country, track guy and grownups and kids are dead.
- 29:42Kind of start the youth football league in.
- 29:43Our town was all football, football, nut and my middle
- 29:46brother. It's easier to get into the
- 29:50doctors, never claimed play football.
- 29:53So I just kind of felt shunned and gone away, mom has his
- 29:55football football. So always try to please my man,
- 29:58he got into cross country and in high school he won two state
- 30:02championships and two favorite or else.
- 30:04They were four years in a row is dominant but the old man, they
- 30:08coached him back then that's, we got a new coach Binkley.
- 30:11Okay, so, of course, I'm a little kid.
- 30:13I'm come along and help. Dad, what do I fifth grade year?
- 30:17I said, Dad, I don't play football this year, I want to
- 30:20run cross country. Brooke mole man's heart.
- 30:23Yeah. He's like oh my God.
- 30:38It was then. I got the nickname
- 30:58yellow-bellied catfish in the word yellow.
- 31:01Yeah on behalf of that Hill, it was like oh my hamstring.
- 31:06Well my leg. Where's the football field?
- 31:08I think I want to I really really grounded help my leg and
- 31:12lay there is no next day I'd go back to my dad's a day.
- 31:16Can I get back to football again?
- 31:19But that got me into this, the coach, I love the word because
- 31:23most people in general society would say oh, you know,
- 31:26cross-countries easier football is the hardest sport.
- 31:28You're like yeah that cross-country stuff.
- 31:30Y'all can have that. I'm going to go back over here
- 31:32breaks in football. You know, you get you get a
- 31:35huddle, you gotta stop for a minute, you know.
- 31:37I can't stop. And it's uphill was hot.
- 31:42There's no halftime across country timeout.
- 31:46Timeout timeout, everybody stop running.
- 31:48All right. So anyway, so football is a big
- 31:54part of our family growing up, everything else and I'll penny
- 31:57with my getting because frankly then so going to that spring I
- 32:01joined the track team and fifth grade and little tiny little
- 32:04squirt run around. He took everybody in the young,
- 32:06it's where you found success. All the girls were young and
- 32:08everybody else and So with that, I guess High School, my Brother
- 32:15catfish, had to state champs. Yes, my brother Joe was a
- 32:17sprinter and price, should I say champ ship and 100?
- 32:20And he wrapped his quads with a strap.
- 32:24And it came right in the middle of the race.
- 32:25He come on, wrapped. Oh man.
- 32:27Yeah, so either way. But so we allowed track history.
- 32:30I'll football is treated really good happens.
- 32:33I live up to my end up doing is I thought you would have
- 33:11I was that guy with the last CM. Now Trent everybody else, right?
- 33:15I never lost. I was really good.
- 33:17Hey, if it works, it works. No, I did.
- 33:20He say, you'll never win The Big Race.
- 33:22You'll never win when it counts and The Big Race game state
- 33:25championship. I won the number one and came
- 33:26out number two. Then get out.
- 33:30I thought he catch that give you know that Kim's just passed.
- 33:32I was, you know, I don't know. You know that look like guys But
- 33:43anyway, yeah. So anyway, so high school here.
- 33:46I graduated in 1990. I gotta play football here and
- 33:50ran track After High School. I went to Campbellsville
- 33:53College. Yeah, small little couch that
- 33:55down the middle. Kentucky played football there
- 33:58for years and that's where is my life didn't have track team.
- 34:01They're actually our second year in me and a couple of guys went
- 34:03to their football coach and say we want to track club and he's
- 34:06shot it down because we would not be in the weight room with
- 34:09football here, right? Yeah, right.
- 34:10And he went to control. In this program and make sense.
- 34:13I understand. But we do have track, they have
- 34:16track now, they have a beautiful, it's amazing.
- 34:19I got there in 1990. There were seven buildings,
- 34:22three were condemned. It was rough.
- 34:25Oh man it was it wasn't bad shape.
- 34:28They sort of football there in 87 basically to try and save the
- 34:30school right? And it did it's amazing.
- 34:32I got answers. Well, I came back from there in
- 34:3690. I do many I actually am a
- 34:38college. You are running back or I'll
- 34:41Strong safety, strong safety but but just shredded my knee foot
- 34:47backwards that's located on the field.
- 34:49Dennis but I came back play two more years for that but had a
- 34:52medical Redshirt I left there came back to Thomas More
- 34:57spending your Thomas More and then from there I got a job
- 35:00coaching yet date my old high school coach called me up so
- 35:03everybody down playing now don't you come down and Coach Carson
- 35:07TVs and I was like, you know what, why not when you were
- 35:10going through college You like what were you made your name?
- 35:13Were you thinking about becoming a?
- 35:15Yes. Yeah I wanted to catch education
- 35:18major in social studies program because I wanted to go did that
- 35:22occur before you went to college like as you were, maybe senior
- 35:26years, you're starting to think about college more.
- 35:27You're like, yeah, I want to coach, I'm gonna go become an
- 35:29education, major ordered, it sounds cheesy.
- 35:32I get to use my buddies all the time, but my senior quote was,
- 35:34I'm gonna come back home, coach football.
- 35:36And when know it wasn't, yes, I swear.
- 35:39So here I am. Wow, so this This was, I mean,
- 35:43this was a trained in you like, oh, I'm going to be a good not,
- 35:45I want to be a coach. Oh yeah, I am going to meet ya.
- 35:49I don't know anything else. I'm not smart guy.
- 35:52I don't know anything else. I'm a dumb old football.
- 35:54Guess, you know what? First of all know, that's not
- 35:59true. So I'm interested in that, you
- 36:06know, some people kind of dumb luck their way into coaching
- 36:09meaning like we've had several guests, you know, You would
- 36:12consider them big time college coaches.
- 36:14Now, who never thought of coaching until like their senior
- 36:17year of college. And they're like, oh wait, I
- 36:19never thought about it. My coach, what you, get paid for
- 36:21this. Like, I could actually maybe do
- 36:23this. Like, as I said, kind of trip
- 36:25their way into becoming a coach, right?
- 36:27Like a passion of yours obviously, very early.
- 36:31Was it the coaches you had around?
- 36:33You was it a TV coaching know you're in basketball?
- 36:36And right, so there's some big personality.
- 36:39I had two great coaches growing up.
- 36:41My football coach, Dan Ritter he was here 16 years as head
- 36:45football coach. He kind of got thrust into head
- 36:48coach back in his 22 years. Old.
- 36:49My sophomore year? Wow, he was a fire while he was.
- 36:54He was mean he was tough. I don't like him.
- 36:58We do not get along great story. I made to my sophomore year, you
- 37:04know, and my junior year I was little I guess more arrogant.
- 37:08I need the Balaam or to assure myself and he give me an inch.
- 37:14Anyway, long story short on back at practice, we are talking and
- 37:19goofing off and he calls me out. Hundred push-ups, I roll my eyes
- 37:23and the game 200 push-ups before the occurrence has ended.
- 37:25I had about eight hundred push-ups.
- 37:28So I'm going to ground, do my push-ups, and we do our
- 37:31conditioning. So teams running.
- 37:33I'm pushing and head coach always ran with us and he said
- 37:38backwards, every guy named Wayne Margot.
- 37:40Buddy Monsignor says, coach. Some of the stuff, an old break
- 37:42an ankle. Is that nonsense?
- 37:44Blows the Whistle, a third run, it backwards.
- 37:47What happens? Oh no, he steps in a hole.
- 37:50He breaks his foot. All right II.
- 37:53Think I'm gonna ground. Pushing the ground funny things
- 37:56in my life. I'm with her.
- 37:57Arrogant mattered right there. I'm laugh my butt off.
- 38:04You know so I get up. I do on my running everybody's
- 38:07gone. I dragged myself a locker and he
- 38:08calls me a locker because putting big dark handful eyes.
- 38:10He's a row me, tough guy, and I walk in and he says, I'm gonna
- 38:13ask you just one question, son, he lie to me, be gone for two
- 38:17weeks. You come to the truth of just
- 38:19one week. I went, oh no first, I'm a
- 38:23hothead what I do and I throw my hands up and get a tip of punk
- 38:26kid. To.
- 38:27Somebody said you called me a hole and I said no sir because
- 38:32you lied to me two weeks. And on that, I kicked the desk,
- 38:37I caught him in EM after and I start screaming yelling, you
- 38:39kiss my butt other coach dragged me out to my locker room.
- 38:45I can make next day, he'll to my legs begging pleading.
- 38:49Please forgive me, please. He said, Son, cleaner Locker
- 38:52out, hit the road. Wow!
- 38:54And got an eye. Best thing ever happened to me
- 38:58now as theorem do. You know, the burning question
- 39:01for me, is, did you really call him an a-hole?
- 39:03I'm sure he calling worse. He has received many years and
- 39:58the long story short, new principal came in, and we didn't
- 40:02see eye-to-eye, he's retarded army, colonel, and he is headed
- 40:05different. Yes, he had a different look at
- 40:07things that I did, and so he came to me said, I'll give you
- 40:11first interview. I said first interview could
- 40:14infer what. All right, he's our football
- 40:16coach of the football game. So it came interview time and I
- 40:29didn't get a job and I was pretty upset found out the bad
- 40:33away. I will go down.
- 40:34Can we talk about how I found out and found out from somewhere
- 40:37else? Designed and start Jonathan and
- 41:27got cornered by a lot of schools around the area.
- 41:29And a lot of people go to a lot of guys, like played college
- 41:31ball with Coach, but I found Simon Kenton gotten Jeff
- 41:36marksberry out there and he is a, heck of a coach had a great
- 41:39vision. Simon Kenton was a doormat that
- 41:41was a big school that allows a date.
- 41:42We could be all the time. Now, Simon's, a Powerhouse down
- 41:45here, but I said 15 years for him there and that's really
- 41:50very, very I started coaching track as I say.
- 41:52When did you start coaching track, right?
- 41:53Yeah, are you going back? What else?
- 41:55Here from 95 through three. I was here coaching football.
- 41:58I was also suspect wreckage. So I was helping coach track
- 42:02their the old man, cuz think we were friends, the show.
- 42:04He has his staff, and I was kind of that.
- 42:05Extra young guy just came in and worked to relays and take the
- 42:09kids and made water. Whatever he is doing.
- 42:12He taught me a lot of animals. Those ten years.
- 42:16So I got the Simon my first year there.
- 42:18The, my towel Stevens coordinator, a mile and Erica.
- 42:21She was dead trackage and didn't have a whole lot of track
- 42:24knowledge. And I did a lot of track not
- 42:26there and then realizing the quarter.
- 42:28So I don't know much about what's going on and he signed
- 42:31the assistant, I was like, you know what?
- 42:33Because now the weight room, the officers before the football,
- 42:35there was a machine, when 365 we grind, it does it.
- 42:39I get away for two months to get extra money and, and get paid.
- 42:42I love that head coach, I love with him.
- 42:55Having a baby and starting a family up and resign.
- 42:58I like well I'll take the girls, I started 14 year olds and seven
- 43:04uniforms all cheese. So now I can't go and see how
- 43:08bad they treated me there because I'm not there anymore.
- 43:10Hope y'all had to get back but in 15 years coaching assignment
- 43:14in, I never got two nickels to rub together.
- 43:17Never got a single squat, then he come.
- 43:19No and head football, coach and head.
- 43:21Football coach was my best buddy, you might Compadre was
- 43:25the ad and he knew he abused me and get away with it.
- 43:32So anyway, so I did my first coaching girls was amazing whole
- 43:43different game. Coaching girls.
- 43:44Yeah, boys were hard girls. They, they wanted it.
- 43:49You grew up very football Centric.
- 43:50So very boy in high school and college in, right?
- 43:54So, yeah. Girls, I love that girl's.
- 43:55Yeah, what was kind of the major like, what was the eye-opener
- 43:58for you? Like, oh wait, not only are they
- 43:59different? But that means I got to be maybe
- 44:01a little different. I'm never gonna be different.
- 44:04Okay. I'm always gonna be mediums, you
- 44:06know, I think they appreciate that.
- 44:23So the next year, The Voice coach.
- 44:26His wife got sick. I think I'm off to take care of
- 44:29his wife so he has stepped down sounds like Hang about, take
- 44:35them both. Yeah, and that's kind of where I
- 44:37started my track Venture, but like I said, I did Logistics.
- 44:40I agree the team. He got everybody.
- 44:42All right. The football coach was anti
- 44:44track, so I had to a beat him and beat him abusing like right
- 44:47now. I'm gone.
- 44:48No kids and football, team on track.
- 44:50It's crushing them. Wow, our time out that.
- 44:53But again, get the football guys.
- 44:55I went to soccer practice every morning they started for
- 44:57football, practice and try to wash them all the conditioning.
- 45:00The morning, I said, I drink coffee go, okay, recruit him.
- 45:03Through him as get him to interact with the invent
- 45:05tracking. Just I I've always played the
- 45:07best way to cook is better relationships with kids together
- 45:10level, having fun with them, pretty fun.
- 45:12I don't want to do it. So as you've heard of my butt
- 45:14off and discuss Kids come out, come out, come out and we Grove
- 45:17you know, separately guys are girls.
- 45:18We were having 50 kids, we serviced, I mean more than
- 45:20anybody else in the school and we never got a nickel to help
- 45:24us. We had to fundraise and so
- 45:25cookie dough, cookie donkey, Spin out there, I guess the
- 45:35first four years by myself, five years and then Coach Begley
- 45:40don't go from down here in Dayton.
- 45:42Who when Allah States has greatly.
- 45:43He coached here from starting to 79 coaster, throw for, in that
- 45:48time, he went eight state championships.
- 45:51I think I can look how many state runner-ups and Converse
- 45:53championships. We had two girls here, that held
- 45:56the state record for the most ancient ship of state of
- 45:58Kentucky. He coached the girl, I graduated
- 46:00with him, Stephen the editor of one, I believe 13 or 14 state
- 46:03Gasps. WOW, Country.
- 46:05Right, phenomenal. This is a phenomenal athlete.
- 46:08Tiny little thing. She wanted.
- 46:10Uofl had a great career of L married, nothing wrong with you
- 46:15about what she does on mobile Stone, coaches track.
- 46:17She's great. Kids are daughter.
- 46:20They can't be doing track and field other girl, Adrian Hummer,
- 46:26she graduated, she I graduated 90s, I think she was 94.
- 46:30She granted great. Two state championships and get
- 46:35back to move the books. I for what I thought was 27.
- 46:37So my question is those 2220 but again she other state record up
- 46:41to two or three years ago. Wow and she she ran the quarter
- 46:45and the screen and rolls back the back.
- 46:48State champion. Wow, that's tough.
- 46:50Okay. At least three years.
- 46:51Maybe for all four years of high school.
- 46:52She ran his back-to-back. Walk on the track before back
- 46:55over 300. Oh my God.
- 46:57Then again, I think kids tried since I told story, right?
- 47:17He's got energy. And just goes when I ran high
- 47:21school, you couldn't get away because he trained with you.
- 47:23And I, and for sprinters a lightning was five miles because
- 47:26he's an old distance guy. No Molly, right?
- 47:28Puerto Ricans. Oh God.
- 48:04In. He's all and he goes like a
- 48:06virus. You say sir he's hurt and they
- 48:09would say very no, don't have just you just coach this let me
- 48:12be the head coach and I said their acid dude screw all that
- 48:17stop playing around. Get out here so I'm gonna die
- 48:19with me. No, the why would have died out
- 48:21there as much? I'll never see your hair color.
- 48:23Motivator has a beer on there was a no Dia, ha ha.
- 48:27Those guys, I will see you just met this guy note, I am
- 48:31Logistics. I'll throw this code should not.
- 48:35Therefore I inherited his old buddy, my from college in from
- 48:38the area and doesn't alter the Middle School, still gyroscope
- 48:42to this day. He's been the best in the areas.
- 48:43Great hedge, a coach, I inherited and Jim Pace.
- 48:46He's the Air corps pilot for the local hospitals, but he's still
- 48:51in Jeopardy, coach. I had buried own death and I had
- 48:53her and everybody, I coached the relays when I could, because
- 48:57very came in and just took everything.
- 49:00I tell the kids, you know, I'm head coach on paper, but
- 49:02listening to him. Well, you know you're going to
- 49:04come because I don't but I brought him in and he was with
- 49:07me and we just we were great together.
- 49:09I love the guy to death. A lot of people have have a very
- 49:14loving, are you fighting? You know, I live with that but
- 49:17he's just a ball of energy. Some is not going to track and
- 49:19field. He's like a second dad to me, I
- 49:21love you guys to death. So me coming to school here, him
- 49:25and Coach Fritter. We're the guys that pulled me
- 49:28into Dayton and maybe want to coach those guys were everything
- 49:32to me. No.
- 49:34But I tried yoga burial time because he's now Simon's head
- 49:37coach where I was said coach my left, wow, let him take her.
- 49:40Brother's head coach now. So, so funny.
- 49:42He's another unique aspect of you.
- 49:45Jesse is your the football coach and the track coach at Dayton,
- 49:49you know, there's a lot of talk in the track World.
- 49:52About specialization, I shouldn't say the track where
- 49:54the athletic World about specialization versus
- 49:56multi-sport athletes. I have to imagine such a the
- 50:00football and track coach you believe in multi sport.
- 50:03Athletes talk to us about your thoughts on football players,
- 50:07running track and vice versa. How many kids actually come play
- 50:10football and ran track, go to college for why they really
- 50:14doing it for both of. Why the playing football right
- 50:17on track? They're doing it for fun.
- 50:19There's no for the competition person, bigger than them, here
- 50:22to go play college sports. We play the next level.
- 50:24Right. So, few actually have that dream
- 50:26where I was earlier to make it that far.
- 50:29Yeah. Because, you know, I want a lot
- 50:34and I always had these kids came out around the time when their
- 50:36last and they come out every day if you wanted.
- 50:39It took me awhile for the process that but kids, don't get
- 50:41that like competition like the game, and it always about the
- 50:44next level. So, as far as specializing, if
- 50:46you give kids a freak, you gonna catch just, you know, he's a
- 50:49baseball picture and he's going to be, I mean, he's the real
- 50:51deal. Specialized that kid, that's
- 50:54what's best for him, go for it. But in general, its high school.
- 50:57Yeah. Play games.
- 50:59Have fun. Be a kid.
- 51:01We're a small school. If you Specialized hear those
- 51:04words with suffer. All right, Mike is play
- 51:05everything, you know. So that's interesting.
- 51:08Point you made there about, you know the vast majority are not
- 51:11going to go on to college for a sport and we actually tell that
- 51:15as coaches, right? Like hey you got to work hard,
- 51:18you got to do this x y&z. If you want a shot at going to
- 51:21college, not everybody gets to go to college and so that's kind
- 51:26of an argument people use for specialization.
- 51:29Like if you want to be one of those one percent or whatever
- 51:32the number is that moves on from Go to college, you better
- 51:34Specialized but in reality you're looking at it in the
- 51:37majority level of like a well, 99% aren't.
- 51:40So shouldn't we as coaches and Educators be there to help them
- 51:44have fun and enjoy. And if you want to run track and
- 51:47football and play baseball, whatever as much as you know,
- 51:50whatever we can to help facilitate multi Surah catering
- 51:53to you know I work for these kids.
- 51:57That's why I look at things and we work for the kids.
- 51:59That's a good way to put it. Is who you cater to do?
- 52:01You get it to the way you cater to your ego?
- 52:03Go. Yeah.
- 52:04My star running back this year, he blew his ACL, say, Game of
- 52:07the Year, it's a trap guy and come out track this year and he
- 52:11do shot but it's a big strong kids.
- 52:13You know, we'll find something else but a shop in your hand,
- 52:15hit rate, three times aren't shot, he wanted to kill her.
- 52:17If I did find the computer with it but it came out every day
- 52:20because it was a former competition.
- 52:23He's gonna play college football is going on.
- 52:24Thomas More, go scholarship. You're playing everything.
- 52:27But again baseball season is having to tell and my teams
- 52:30coordinator baseball coach. So Baseball team like heck yeah
- 52:34you play baseball too. You do it all.
- 52:36Yeah, we have guys drizzling they're playing the band and on
- 52:40the football team so at halftime, you look as he got
- 52:43into pads marching and have time shout, right?
- 52:46It's always been that way. We got our flag of that over the
- 52:48years. That's like when I was a kid I'm
- 52:50gonna pray, I have it next year with couple kobach is gonna play
- 52:52football because I recruit everybody, I go get everybody,
- 52:55anybody every Walk of Life and footballs drag its everybody.
- 52:59Yeah, so the you know when you're going to Your football
- 53:04coaching conventions and meetings and things like that,
- 53:07and you're just reporting with other football.
- 53:09Coaches is there still? So I get insulated in my bubble
- 53:12of track and field. That's all you know my social
- 53:14media and basically my life, right?
- 53:16All I'm only talking to track people so I get very I'm in that
- 53:20box, right? I don't talk to them any track
- 53:22or many football. Coaches is the sentiment of
- 53:27specializing for football. You know, doing making sure
- 53:30you're doing Spring ball and spring lifting.
- 53:31Don't worry about track. We're going to get Fast is that
- 53:34actual reality for the majority of football coaches?
- 53:37Or is that something? You know, sometimes we like to
- 53:38be martyred, right? It's like oh, you know, you
- 53:41should be running track. Everybody hates track, you
- 53:43should be running it and maybe that's not even reality.
- 53:45What is the actual kind of its far as your circle the reality
- 53:48of coaches football coaches who want their kids to Route many
- 53:51football coaches coach track anymore?
- 53:54Is it a few very few of us left? You know, this is goodbye to.
- 53:56It was like the whole area here. Most of all coaches.
- 53:59Now, football is year-round and they want them in the weight
- 54:02room. They want them with them all the
- 54:02time. I'm and I understand that 100% I
- 54:05fought that fought assignment, can try to get kids out, you
- 54:07know, on football team, head coach.
- 54:09And so what I did I had to practice times either. 3:00 time
- 54:13after school, for everybody who wasn't a football player at 4:30
- 54:17and photos. Let them weights.
- 54:18And they got cited. Their jellies and Sprint's that
- 54:21have track practice. So, I pulled the football guys,
- 54:23out of that. And we have trackers.
- 54:25Those guys, the early guys would carry over need being real.
- 54:29A guys wanted to work together and that's why I did things.
- 54:33When I got here, I come the door and say all right guys.
- 54:35Football team ready in offices in the city, baseball player?
- 54:39Hands up yet. Baseball plays.
- 54:40Okay, you guys go stand over there.
- 54:41You guys, you're on the track team.
- 54:45I like that. You didn't have the track team,
- 54:47you said, okay. The rest of you, you're on the
- 54:49track team. You are on the track team.
- 54:51So all of a sudden baseball team, grew more guys out
- 54:55baseball, which is great because baseball is his numbers know.
- 54:58The guy who did the downside of it was that I walked.
- 55:08Okay. I got 25 throwers.
- 55:11What I do with 25, 3 hours and I don't have a cell.
- 55:14He's all have the poison. So I went out of his way to the
- 55:17throne and well. Okay, fired, you're fired,
- 55:19you're fired back away. Room - Wait and it kind of did
- 55:22that divide their. It was an experiment about a
- 55:26what I found out of kids to fell in love with track this year,
- 55:29kids who just never there, nobody run before they go to
- 55:31hasten and just begin to crack nuts.
- 55:33Awesome. So I'm just going to influence
- 55:35kids and then exposing to the better things, you know.
- 55:38So on the college level, As much as I would love a football
- 55:43player who had track background to run track.
- 55:46I like, I kind of get it on the college level, no matter what.
- 55:48Whether you're at a Thomas More, Campbellsville Florida, State,
- 55:51University, Kentucky, doesn't matter.
- 55:53I get it there right and their salaries involved and maybe
- 55:56scholarships, you know, involved on the high school level.
- 55:59I don't get it at all. I mean, if you're a football
- 56:02coach, and I would have to venture to guess 90-plus percent
- 56:05of football coaches are teachers as well.
- 56:07I know there are a few in this world that it weirdly you only
- 56:11coach football and the high school level, but I know it
- 56:13exists and probably 90% of that group is all in Texas, probably.
- 56:17So in Cincinnati to though there's some huge you know, you
- 56:19know schools in Ohio. Yeah huge the wide river.
- 56:23I said you're an educator for sure.
- 56:30History, teacher PE teacher science, teacher, first, it
- 56:33doesn't make sense that a football coach would hold back.
- 56:37Someone who wants to run track or even encourage them to run
- 56:41track. I just don't get.
- 56:42It doesn't make sense. It makes no sense because I
- 56:45mean, it's competition. I want my kids competing, you
- 56:49know, I mean, wrestling football coach.
- 56:50So a wrestling because they got to lose weight and almost on my
- 56:54road wrestler. Yeah, we have wrestling here but
- 56:55the last was like, is this never go down, guys to see growing up
- 56:58and brassel. Go can Pete Reiser all
- 57:00competition as you get yourself as you'll get the world, you
- 57:03know. It's awesome.
- 57:05You know you can use part of your body you never known exist.
- 57:08Yeah. Matrix out drugs, it's a whole
- 57:10nother game. Original sport.
- 57:12That's a great skill. Learning how to compete as not.
- 57:17You didn't say learning how to win.
- 57:18That's a byproduct of what you did, the effort I put in and and
- 57:21sometimes lock, right? Like with wrestling who you get
- 57:23paired up against and but we just had the US Air Force
- 57:28Academy, their whole staff on a few weeks ago and they kind of
- 57:32talked about that, you know, their job or is track coach, you
- 57:35know, they're coaching track throwers jumpers Runners Etc,
- 57:38but they talked about because they're at a service Academy.
- 57:41Out of their responsibility is helping young men and women grow
- 57:44up learning how to compete. Like if you these guys and gals
- 57:47are going to be the ones that are going to be in the fighter
- 57:49planes fighting for us and on the ground.
- 57:52Well what you want? That person to be competitive
- 57:54and learn and know how to win, how to be compete and I was like
- 57:57like makes a lot of sense in this instance, the the example
- 58:00you're given like learning how to compete is important, whether
- 58:03you are going to be in athletics, in the next step or
- 58:06not. If you're a teacher, it's
- 58:07important that you know, how to how to compete business.
- 58:10It's important. That you know how to compete.
- 58:12Any job ilysm? Let me count was a mic.
- 58:15It's all based on competition. All right, the strong, the
- 58:17strong winds. There's winners and losers.
- 58:20All right, I mean that's our system way.
- 58:21It is where I mean I love it when a country in the world that
- 58:24has high school sports. Hmm you go to Europe you don't
- 58:27play high school sports you play club sports the affiliation,
- 58:29right? What?
- 58:30It's probably education process. I said you don't learn math and
- 58:32science languages in schools we use those is our vehicles to
- 58:36teach you how to be the right type of system for self-obsessed
- 58:39and we have sports as well, which is Is key.
- 58:42You know, one is it's a character says, hey, you don't
- 58:45play sports take care of your grades.
- 58:47Number to put all the stuff we learned from football.
- 58:49I mean, my core values Point. Number one is family.
- 58:53Now, when we were basically on fire with the Green Devils, so
- 58:55he's acting on fire, it's my core values, our family, which
- 58:59is everything, you know, this gives me the yellow each other
- 59:02people yelling Integrity. Yes, I would High character
- 59:05kids. High character boys out there to
- 59:06people. Right, relentlessness keep on
- 59:10coming. No, we come from our school
- 59:13football but I came here tearfully, you're for, I got
- 59:16here, they had to cancel last two games of the year and a
- 59:19fourth of them. Not enough kids to play, oh no,
- 59:21they won 15 games in the past 11 years.
- 59:24Before I got here, this the worst program in the states,
- 59:29right? So relentlessness is no recover
- 59:31and just keep on coming and of course of the nie is enthusiasm
- 59:34again, any fun, I don't do it, you know, from this miles of
- 59:37some drum here, we're playing games, but again, we teach me
- 59:41guys. Values and how to be men and how
- 59:43to handle, you know, how to cope and deal with adversity is our
- 59:46kids don't handle adversity, very well down here you
- 59:49mentioned. You don't you are who you are,
- 59:52meaning you don't coach the girls differently than he
- 59:54coached the boys. How do you take that?
- 59:57Same that fire that you talked about, you know, family,
- 1:00:01intensity, relentlessness and don't tell me, don't tell me
- 1:00:05dang it, that's how bad my memory is.
- 1:00:08What is the E unenthusiastic enthusiasm?
- 1:00:11I would be kicked off your team in a heartbeat.
- 1:00:14How do you take that type of attitude?
- 1:00:16Like that's a very football thing, right?
- 1:00:18The fire, the fira it is and it is at the track Carrie's right
- 1:00:22here because a lot of the same good louder.
- 1:00:23Same, guys, it was really needs a lot of same guys, and we live
- 1:00:26by these morals. These values passed either
- 1:00:28really installing these guys. And they're buying it hardcore,
- 1:00:31because again, so, so bad before these kids are loving the new
- 1:00:33and love and success and they're bought in it, carries over to
- 1:00:36the other kids who don't I'm playing football running track
- 1:00:38to you the concept of of a family in the Brotherhood and
- 1:00:42the team concept. Take care of each other.
- 1:00:43You feed it in Root Cellar on so much good stuff don't you?
- 1:00:46Oh tell him on the ass, I'm talking about sorry.
- 1:00:50But uh, you know, so So what where do you you're in your?
- 1:00:57You just finished your second year.
- 1:00:59Is that right? Because my second year?
- 1:01:00Yes, near. So where do you go from here,
- 1:01:02man? I mean, obviously, you know, you
- 1:01:04got a lot of experience that you've been drawn on from the
- 1:01:06other schools and even from your other past positions and even
- 1:01:10from your college days and your high school days when you were
- 1:01:13there at Dayton, how are you continuing to like, what's your
- 1:01:16three look like, you is, you're putting things in stages and
- 1:01:19continue to grow. I mean, obviously it's a me go
- 1:01:21back. I came here to coach football,
- 1:01:23let me know. Drag thing, but I can get
- 1:01:25football, kids. I also came here to be in this
- 1:01:28type of to ministration, so I'm the dean of students.
- 1:01:31Yeah. So that keeps me really, really,
- 1:01:33really busy. So that's that comes my old dad.
- 1:01:36They've done beginning odds is a cushy job for the football
- 1:01:38coach. No, that's the driver film.
- 1:02:24Set experiment, running back to the Bangles on the store at but
- 1:02:27I hired Cedric met him at Simon Kenton but he came, he retired.
- 1:02:31And when I get a Coke instead I brought in it was just great.
- 1:02:33Yeah. But I hire dating guys because
- 1:02:36we're trying to reignite date and get people interested.
- 1:02:39I think going on. All right, so we had a great
- 1:02:41first year of football. We won four games, we were four
- 1:02:45to one in 1.75 and I we kind of lost that first one on the
- 1:02:48fudge, but, but first time they had a winning season or it
- 1:02:52started as a thing to do. Decades.
- 1:02:55So the baseball job came open and we got my buddies are the
- 1:02:59demons coordinator. He graduated with me.
- 1:03:01He's not the baseball coach on the track coach and football
- 1:03:05coach. And we've raised this hired a
- 1:03:07guide. I coach back in the 90s, we are
- 1:03:09basketball coach. So we had all these dating guys
- 1:03:11were bringing in host mouth. Football says they can guys.
- 1:03:14And that's pretty much. What was the thing was?
- 1:03:15Just getting it going. So we're we're on the way up, I
- 1:03:19guess. Six years retirement.
- 1:03:21And we're bringing everybody on. We have to go - Dane
- 1:03:24respectable. I love him back in.
- 1:03:26Be competitive. Yeah, when when I talk to
- 1:03:28college coaches that are alums of their college like that, I
- 1:03:32always think that's so special. It's like, oh man, when you
- 1:03:34recruit and you tell a kid, how great your school is like, you
- 1:03:36got the greatest proof there is, you went to school there, you
- 1:03:40know, so to bring Dayton guys, back to Dayton to coach really
- 1:03:45many versions of themselves, right?
- 1:03:46That that's your old is who you were when you were 16, how close
- 1:03:51am I me and my buddies, get together.
- 1:03:52And we have a coach, our high school football team.
- 1:03:54I mean we really let you read it with that give Coach track and
- 1:03:59you know, but just it's I'm in heaven, absolute Pure Heaven.
- 1:04:02So it's been come true. I love that and you know, to
- 1:04:06bring it back. Full circle, Jesse, I love your
- 1:04:09attitude. First of all, love to Attitudes
- 1:04:11that you continue to exude here. One is Community Pride, you
- 1:04:15know. And and certainly even if you're
- 1:04:17not in your own where you grew up Community having, you know,
- 1:04:20affecting where you are, where you're two feet are right now
- 1:04:23today. Big deal.
- 1:04:25And you're getting to do that in the community that you grew up
- 1:04:27in your family, grew up in your mom and dad are allowing what a
- 1:04:31legacy right there in Dayton. And then to, you know, coming
- 1:04:35back to the kick. Some asphalt track me, I love
- 1:04:38the no excuses attitude. Right.
- 1:04:41You know, we do a lot of these as coaches.
- 1:04:44The FI re we do a lot of these slogans, you know, no excuses.
- 1:04:47And you know, Chris fear and all this kind of stuff and those are
- 1:04:50great and some people certainly respond to the words and the the
- 1:04:54signs and the banners, but we all Respond to action.
- 1:05:01And so you had every excuse in the world.
- 1:05:04There is no track facility. Well, I want to do this treat
- 1:05:07me, but I'd have to build a sand pit.
- 1:05:09We don't have one of those so we can't do this, you build the
- 1:05:12sandpit, you know, you're going to have a freaking Steeplechase
- 1:05:15next year. I mean I love that attitude of
- 1:05:19No Excuses, get it done, figure it out.
- 1:05:22All because your goal is for these kids to have the
- 1:05:25experience while they're there at your high school.
- 1:05:28Your high school, you know, literally your high school and
- 1:05:31growing up. We didn't have the facilities
- 1:05:33and we just grew up watching rocky.
- 1:05:35Rocky and the Russians and I went to Russia any training in
- 1:05:38the thing. That's kind of that's going to
- 1:05:39think we don't have the updated facilities.
- 1:05:41We have none of those stuff about has we just kind of just
- 1:05:43you make it happen. You take what you got and you
- 1:05:46know mr. Make it happen.
- 1:05:47I was just way it is. So that's just kind of instilled
- 1:05:50in our tears, our way of life, down here our culture.
- 1:05:52So but with it I mean it's just treat me was you know, let's go
- 1:05:55have some fun, you know? And and and race.
- 1:05:58Race. And we, I really I barely made a
- 1:06:00big deal of the year, but I don't know.
- 1:06:01Was this big of a deal? We're gonna try some things out
- 1:06:04here and race streets, you know, why not?
- 1:06:06And I read, maybe I'm, it's obviously so well, my hope with
- 1:06:11having you on the show is that there are other coaches that are
- 1:06:14listening right now that are in the same boat.
- 1:06:16They don't have a facility and they've always wondered.
- 1:06:18Could I pull it off? Well, the circle around my
- 1:06:22parking lot. It's 600.
- 1:06:24That's not a 400. I can't figure it out.
- 1:06:26My hope is that maybe you've kind of written The blueprint,
- 1:06:29if you will, for others to do it, their ways, not, everyone
- 1:06:32can have a 600. Maybe they're doing 300 meter
- 1:06:34repeats. I don't know.
- 1:06:34I don't care. Just do something.
- 1:06:37One of the things we Ukraine. Competition.
- 1:06:40If I run outside and creating an obstacle course, yeah, it's the
- 1:06:43same thing that's going to create some different events is
- 1:06:46like, Field Day for for the Middle School.
- 1:06:47You Take It Outside. What eventually number for me?
- 1:06:50Oh man. It wasn't this thing ever you
- 1:07:30know, it's like well it's good that we're does every year as
- 1:07:32great as it's the first meal of the year.
- 1:07:34We have a counter meeting all the girls get together and we
- 1:07:36said that was a restaurant. And we got guys on the middle
- 1:07:38and kind of guys are, here we go, this state, this state.
- 1:07:41And I usually the first day I gave my put mine the week before
- 1:07:43that. Yeah, it's gonna be first.
- 1:07:45So there was the first meal of the year.
- 1:07:47It's training Time. Come on I have some fun kids and
- 1:07:50I ran track before they're all nervous and worried about all
- 1:07:52those structure of a track meet. Hey, it's a great place to break
- 1:07:55the ice. Yeah, come out.
- 1:07:57Throwing up of competition out here kid.
- 1:07:59Relax, you know gonna go because those will stress free.
- 1:08:02Yeah. Those a stress-free environment,
- 1:08:04you know again, uphill downhill over potholes.
- 1:08:07We have a stray cats. Good one car is the one car
- 1:08:11pulled out right now. Oh yeah, what was that?
- 1:08:12Yeah, my biggest fear is several houses have driveways.
- 1:08:18And one there's like social role of government houses right on
- 1:08:22the edge of our campus there and there's like a big long driveway
- 1:08:25kind of three buildings and we had a coned off and I Stage my
- 1:08:29radios. It's my one of the driveway, no
- 1:08:31problem. Radio will make sure those
- 1:08:33common let you help. It's back in this lady that I
- 1:08:36want to wait for us. And she came out to my home
- 1:08:39writing, those treat, the face would be out there about half of
- 1:08:43the race, and I look up and I see a car driving down the
- 1:08:45street. I'm like, oh my God, it's going
- 1:08:48faster, and faster. And this is not a real big area.
- 1:08:52And she turns up the hill, which is a one way street.
- 1:08:54You got to run window and just kids are running on the inside.
- 1:08:57If she's flying on the outside. I'm literally running as fast.
- 1:08:59I can't change his car. Oh my God.
- 1:09:02If I get out of the way, Turk is it was straight the guy's whole
- 1:09:06the cones out of there. Get out.
- 1:09:08I look back in our spot. Our city cops are parked down
- 1:09:11there. I see them jump in his car and
- 1:09:12take off the other way. He got her number.
- 1:09:39Positive impact that you're making in your community,
- 1:09:42literally your community, you know, from growing up there.
- 1:09:45You know we have such a big belief of the power of the
- 1:09:48positive power. A coach can make in their area,
- 1:09:51right? And you're doing In football and
- 1:09:53track in your area. No, excuses.
- 1:09:55You get it done. You have written the blueprint
- 1:09:58on how to do the street me. We've heard about Street vaults
- 1:10:00for pole, vaulting. Well, now we've got the
- 1:10:02blueprint for the street meat, man.
- 1:10:04You can't steal his slogan. You got to come up with your own
- 1:10:07original, no more. He's going to take keeping kick
- 1:10:10some ass fault, you got to come up with your own cool one.
- 1:10:12But man, I'm just so proud and happy for what you do.
- 1:10:15For those kids, you've made a fan, I'm a, I'm a green devil
- 1:10:17fan now, we're going to make sure we connect next year.
- 1:10:20I don't have much, excuse your Kind of down the road from me.
- 1:10:24I want to come see this thing man.

- 1:11:09Jesse is again, he wrote The Blueprint so if you're out there
- 1:11:12listening you don't have a track.
- 1:11:14Unfortunately, you now have no excuses to find some way to make
- 1:11:18it happen for your school, so kids can pick can compete at
- 1:11:21home. That's a Big deal.
