  and everything else, but I've been looking forward to sitting

  high school track meet but there was something special about it.

  There was no track. Now you might think that's a
• 2:46
  prerequisite but we're going to learn today from Jesse how he
• 2:50
  didn't let the absence of a track stop him from hosting a
• 2:54
  home track me. So Jesse talk to us.

  First of all, give us a overview of the high school.
• 3:00
  How many students? No track.
• 3:03
  Was there ever a track? How long have you been the coach
• 3:05
  there and kind of lead us up to this?
• 3:07
  This interesting track meet you did.
• 3:08
  Alright. School is a small.
• 3:10
  Small class in high school were about 400 students know track.
• 3:14
  Never had a track Here. Track facilities are pretty much
• 3:17
  an ill track has always been a very popular sport here, very
• 3:23
  successful track history. Here are trackage waiter for
• 3:26
  Wow, 25 years, a very big, but go back to a minute.
• 3:30
  He's never had a track this whole career.
• 3:32
  He coached here, he's coached did saying Henry for the track,
• 3:35
  he coached assignment came with me the past 15 years before I
• 3:37
  came here, never had a track and he has days.
• 3:40
  But once a champion, I think anybody out there and he's an
• 3:42
  amazing amazing coach, but the street meat itself was easy
• 3:46
  because I grew up here in Dayton, and our workouts are
• 3:49
  around the block where we always had Maria.
• 3:51
  The track meet at our campus is to block campus.
• 3:54
  We have our elementary school in our high school.
• 3:57
  But in between, there is a big old Paper Factory.
• 4:00
  So, around the block, the Paper Factory Elementary.
• 4:02
  There is 600 meters. So we did a lot of 600 meter
• 4:07
  repeats, a lot of training, there is where we got other
• 4:10
  stuff, it's uphill, it's downhill.
• 4:12
  It's it's it's different. You know it's not a huge upgrade
• 4:16
  but it's significant. So with the street meat itself,
• 4:21
  they talked about it for 30, 40 years, you know?
• 4:24
  The old man coach banquet was guys always talked about it.
• 4:27
  I coach with him for 10 years when I came back from college
• 4:29
  and I'm bringing from cyma getting and we talked about it
• 4:32
  then. And so I came back here two
• 4:34
  years ago. Go to be the head football coach
• 4:37
  and took the head track coach. Obviously, he's a package deal
• 4:40
  and so my assistant who was assistant for the old guy and I
• 4:43
  work from, you know, 15 years, 20 years ago, said Brittany your
• 4:46
  back. Let's do the street meat and
• 4:49
  I'll see, you know what, why not?
• 4:52
  We wanted. We already started, we wanted
• 4:54
  to, we have no facilities. We have no jump pad.
• 4:56
  We have. No, I mean have we have a
• 4:57
  street, we got side, we Market Street, the cars coming for her
• 5:00
  out of the way, and we put them back on the goodness.
• 5:03
  We're ready. We're right by the flood wall
• 5:04
  down. So, most of our street around
• 5:07
  the school is just a few cars. Might be a student coming off.
• 5:10
  Campus might be employees to make them up yet, but, you know,
• 5:12
  a parent pick-up. But that whole lot of traffic
• 5:14
  but it's enough that we got stopped half dozen twelve times
• 5:16
  that, you know, to a practice session to car, you know, game
• 5:19
  off game on. That's what it makes me think of
• 5:21
  that old street hockey in streak, right?
• 5:24
  Always came on. Yeah.
• 5:31
  But long story short, we've always trained in the streets
• 5:35
  and always working the streets, but we don't have a Scylla T.
• 5:37
  So I wanted a long jump in, I'm a big, triple jump nut.
• 5:41
  I love the triple jump from an amazing event, that's just I can
• 5:44
  never do it. Never drink because I can't do
• 5:46
  it now but I lost success with it with a really good coach out
• 5:50
  of Simon Kenton before I came here.
• 5:52
  So, when I got home, I don't jump it.
• 5:53
  And I went to Administration, and right outside of weight room
• 5:56
  is an area about 15 feet, 14, feet wide.
• 6:01
  To the curb in the street there and it's probably about 50 60
• 6:05
  feet long but it runs along the outside of the campus like the
• 6:08
  street, an extra weight room and the sidewalk kind of else kind
• 6:12
  of L-shaped their cherry wood elves.
• 6:15
  He goes up to the waiting room, you can go straight and walk to
• 6:17
  the grass so I just grabbed my ass.
• 6:44
  Is it like the next day? Some other day and next day and
• 6:47
  a couple people grow by its coach.
• 6:48
  What are you doing? So I'm working on a long jump in
• 6:52
  here so what are you gonna do? Is I'm gonna take this thing
• 6:55
  out. So now big I said it's going to
• 6:56
  be nine feet wide by about 30 feet long.
• 6:59
  How deep I said I hope you about a foot job self, are you down
• 7:02
  there? And he goes, you know my shovel
• 7:04
  or what I got. 30, 40, football, guys, wearing this out with my
• 7:07
  eyes. I'm ready to go because you're
• 7:09
  crazy. Hold off, I got a bobcat, I'll
• 7:12
  be back. Good.

  Yeah, I came back the next day and I thought he'd be out there,
• 7:17
  instead the city out there, the bobcat City guy showed up and
• 7:20
  they start thinking, they see how they heard about it.

  So they all showed up and we dug it all out with a bobcat.

  It was amazing, everybody pitched in and from there it
• 7:29
  took off, there we went. Wow, look at this.

  We could have long jump triple jump here.
• 7:34
  Yeah, in the baseball to our campus is really nice because
• 7:37
  our schools. Next, the flow of all, we had
• 7:40
  the 600 block raised around the elementary next to his ear.
• 7:43
  And then there's a big city park with baseball field.
• 7:46
  Softball field. Tennis courts, basketball,
• 7:48
  courts on stuff. We can throw a discus right in
• 7:51
  the baseball field. There's our cage.
• 7:55
  So we want the dirt. I got a stick and string square
• 8:01
  feet. It wasn't my feet and I got it,
• 8:02
  I made money, you know, made my circle, and come back to spray
• 8:05
  paint the circle cutter. Vectors in scraping across
• 8:09
  baseball field there. And we through discourse out
• 8:11
  there, they'll say no brainer. He was a great shot but we don't
• 8:14
  the street. We have a lot of those sidewalks
• 8:16
  side streets. They're selling several laps
• 8:19
  around the school, big grass, Lots.
• 8:21
  There's a great band, a big circle right down the street.

  As you were building these first start, I love that the
• 8:28
  superintendent. Just had a lot of trust in you
• 8:30
  and said, go. I also love that you didn't
• 8:32
  second-guess. I'm like, oh, okay, and you just
• 8:34
  went and did it like before he can change his mind.

  I love that as you were building, these are the kids
• 8:41
  like getting excited or they kind of like, oh man, they want
• 8:44
  to know what crazy old herpes is doing.

  Yeah, those are the mad scientist.

  What are you doing? I'm doing catch a giant sandbox.

  Big cat box, all these stray cats and come over here?

  The community has, it's a challenge Community.

  Very challenging Community economically.

  We have, we have some issues and we don't have a whole lot of
• 9:13
  nice new facilities and new stuff and we bring this stuff in
• 9:17
  the kids. Get excited, might be really
• 9:18
  locker rooms and I got it with football team.

  That was a huge on taking but we had all alumni.
• 9:23
  Everybody donate it, they came into the work, it cost five
• 9:26
  thousand dollars, four hundred thousand dollars with the work
• 9:29
  but but the new sentence gets him.
• 9:31
  Excited, some new, some different, but again, what's
• 9:33
  I've been here two years so they're still trying to figure
• 9:35
  me out, right? I was here at born and raised
• 9:37
  here. Graduated when the college
• 9:39
  played football came home, kosher another ten years and
• 9:42
  then left another school, been gone, 15 years, had a lot of
• 9:46
  success out there. And now, I'm back home now,
• 9:49
  that's kind of the source. I will get into that kind of
• 9:51
  like yourself because don't try to fit in any way.

  I am. Yeah, my family name.

  My whole family was here and you know, I'm the youngest of three.

  And so, that's pretty much what it is.

  Yeah, but again, we're going to just kind of go around We Face

  we can practice things we can do right as we're talking about.

  Hey, if we didn't treat me this way or we can do it and then we

  kind of just progressed from there.

  So and then we just pull the trigger and took off.

  you did. So you got to Camp it.

  So you got a long jump and triple jump, I heard the

  baseball field for discus. I heard kind of off the sidewalk

  into the grass for shot. Put that correct and you got a

  600 M Loop so there you can do. Do four by six hundreds, there's

  probably 100 meter or maybe, I don't know, maybe I shouldn't
• 10:36
  assume what kind of straightaway or hurdles, but I went and I
• 10:40
  called coach Bank. Leave me about my case, might go
• 10:43
  guy and as I need to wheel the wheel, so I got the old wheel
• 10:48
  out and I just start experimenting.

  Okay. So I'll walk down with.

  Okay, it's a centimeter. We always wonder how big this we

  did. I met industry faced growing up?

  I mean, it was pretty course. Folder metaphasic, kills, all

  these things. How far we go his guests to me.

  Well, I guess we have 600. Metres 100 metres is.

  The thing is a monster. And so I got here.

  I was like what? So, this is me things, either,

  there's a common starting line, and we're moving, are the

  timer's, everything else. So eyes are walking things off

  and in the way we did it growing up, we always land backwards.

  It's Gonna attract yd, run counterclockwise.

  But here we are trying to clockwise.

  We always train on this block. Is this way?

  We always did. So, when I first started it all

  up I said it up going clockwise and I was like I don't like it

  at all. This doesn't make sense at all.

  To me you knows this track really good the other way.

  So you know, It's all right, and I end up come up with instead of

  four by eight grand for by 12 two laps, right?

  Yeah, two maps words, everything is changing right down the

  middle of the street between the school and Elementary my flat

  Street there. The Third Street in, right in
• 11:56
  the street. I put down, start and finish
• 11:59
  line for all the relays and we've put cones off.

  everything was open. There was no by an exchange,

  they're worried about their Lanes, no spikes or I could get

  was start up hill. When you come across a fast rate

  and you finish down everything, if it's a little downhill grade,

  when you say Court about an actual like close to 400 meters

  or just 4 meters. Okay.

  So you measured that part out so and that's the way it is

  startling stuff. Yeah.

  The starting line would move to where it is moved to do, with

  Corner were starting on our with, and I want to spray paint

  and everything. And the city worked with me.

  Great. I went to the city.

  Told me I want to do. Yeah, they said they didn't ban.

  I said, sign everything, two days before they called.

  Me said we got a problem. Oh, no.

  We're on a major State Interstate here for a bus route
• 13:14
  comes through and they said, you got to move your meet at the
• 13:18
  state route. We can't close it.

  I went I don't think you boys man.

  But two days we can't change it. Well, till they're ready to go
• 13:30
  and fight the fight and they came to the door and they
• 13:33
  figured out, but something simple.
• 13:36
  Well, they make sure all the cars were towed or gone.

  But in size up, but no to people's cars be ready to move
• 13:45
  is just the other biggest fear. Sure.

  Discard there's my one in the car and get out but a few cars

  have driveways, but they'll tell the story later, we had a car

  Look. I mean it wasn't like oh crap

  did a shuttle so the enemy Street the crosswalks where our

  take off for lunch that we've got there so I put them on the

  back. When they hit the front one, you

  can go, we, because I'm illustrating two teams at a

  time. It might have been the event of

  the day. Why people love it line the

  streets, it was like race cars, man, you're going crazy.

  There's been begging for sprinting and just it was really

  neat, neat setup. I was like a Shuttle Endeavour

  kids, you know, and we still pass.

  So basically I was expecting a 600 or something next year, I'm

  about the kids? Fall into your hands on the

  ground. Track were on the street from

  the old locker room. All stacked up in the back

  interlocking like a puzzle. As I'll put those down.

  He went. Yeah, good.

  Somebody a couple inflatable swimming pools.

  Ha ha. Ha.

  Exactly. So, it's a cell point, you know,

  just don't ya. So Jesse, this is a lot of work

  and, you know, track, which has many, many, many positives.

  Right? I mean, we're in the track

  World. There is no greater sport than
• 16:07
  track and field. Maybe football is a close second
• 16:10
  sensor football as coach that we can track and field, you know,
• 16:13
  one of the maybe sometimes negatives for track and field as
• 16:16
  we're really technical, right? Like the 100-meter dash.
• 16:20
  I mean when you go to I just came back from it.
• 16:23
  Aw championships. And right now when you're
• 16:25
  listening to this we're in the middle of the Olympic trials.
• 16:27
  They're measuring out. The 100 meter dash to the point
• 16:31
  0 1. The, the hash marks for the
• 16:33
  hurdles, the Steeplechase Heights, The Exchange, I mean
• 16:37
  we're real real Technical and you know 99% of the tracks out
• 16:43
  there that are, you know, that are out there real.
• 16:45
  You know, tracks are measured correctly and sometimes we're so
• 16:49
  traditional and track and field, we say, well you can't do it for
• 16:52
  by one as a shuttle. Jesse.
• 16:53
  Come on. That's not a 4 by 1.
• 16:55
  That's a, that's a shuttle. So, you shouldn't even do that
• 16:57
  because you can't qualify for state or our conference or
• 17:00
  anything with this stuff you put in so much work.

  Why? Why every meeting you go to the
• 17:08
  same? That's what I discovered
• 17:11
  everything. I go to, I get the same events
• 17:13
  in the same order and get the same schools with the same kids.

  And most the time we get the same result, it's over and over
• 17:20
  again in the kids nose. But not in this years ago, I was
• 17:22
  at Simon Kenton. We had a county Championship,
• 17:25
  you know, it's just the three County schools and those Dixie
• 17:29
  Simon Kenton Scott. It was a great little try meat.
• 17:32
  Instead of going all everyone's Invitational these days,
• 17:34
  everybody's gonna get the money. Great.
• 17:35
  I got to make money and Earth itself but those are great meat
• 17:38
  but the other counties around is all headache.
• 17:40
  A full County championship. And another guy said, man, we
• 17:43
  gotta make our full cast, don't do it, don't change the format,
• 17:46
  you do, you're gonna regret it guy's brains just another meat.

  All right, but we did it and it became just a traveling trophy
• 17:52
  when he attends all bright orange.
• 17:54
  That's pretty much it on the evil fun thing, the kids like
• 17:56
  hearing all your kids, it's time.
• 17:58
  We can add 150 kids on the track team.
• 17:59
  Wow, I had a dinosaur boys and girls.

  It was amazing out there. We had a numbers out that it's a
• 18:04
  giant school with 2,000 students.
• 18:07
  But I think the more we can all run that meet, you know, it's so
• 18:10
  hard and meet every other day. I have a meeting.
• 18:12
  I'm said, coach somewhere. It is me, that means, right, I
• 18:14
  think coach drag is I'm gonna house Logistics.
• 18:17
  I moved kids, I scheduled events.
• 18:19
  I did everything else I coach my relay teams and that's what I
• 18:22
  got to have them. But I lost my train of thought.
• 18:27
  I was asking the why to put all this work into?
• 18:28
  Yeah, it's different. It's just say it's the same old
• 18:31
  me. The street and race.
• 18:40
  Everybody's worried about their time.
• 18:41
  My PR is my this my that drives me nuts.

  Let's just go race. Yeah, race in a time, take care

  of themselves yet, amazing. Did you notice that that's a

  good point because again, you're right, we get because everything
• 18:54
  is measured the exact same. We run the events in the same
• 18:56
  format, maybe most time. I realize are running the same
• 18:59
  legs and things like that. Did you notice now that the kids

  they didn't have a 400 meter dash?

  They had a one-lap, which is Maybe Be a roughly a six hundred
• 19:08
  meter dash. Did you notice them focusing
• 19:10
  more on beating the kid next to them versus?
• 19:12
  What's my simply all that? Yeah, we got so much positive.
• 19:15
  Therefore all the kids because they're coming in, they're like
• 19:18
  oh my God, the Dayton Dayton itself is in the area.
• 19:22
  We're not. How do I say nobody comes to
• 19:28
  dating? There's not a destination here,
• 19:30
  we're kind of a dead end. Once you get in the day near
• 19:33
  goes out to Route 8, which is going to summer grow which is
• 19:36
  been Landslide and closed. It goes.

  Nowhere above us is a very prominent down for Thomas.

  They don't come down the hill, we're on the river, you know
• 19:46
  about, they want to hear about D.

  So sometimes in always had the best rap sometimes.

  So the big thing about with kids are like, we're going to go And

  the streets of Dayton, I had friends at other schools.

  That said, if I brought my kids on their they'd fire me, guess

  shorty, come on the streets of Dane.

  Are you and how are you nuts? I'm like, what are you talking

  about it? We're just like you guys.

  All right? You know, it's not that bad down

  here. Yeah, I guess people have an

  image to its guns and knives and drugs and band to hold.

  No, no, it's amazing. Little blue collar town, right?

  On the river. But again, it's what you hear
• 20:19
  about nobody's ever come here. It's always been that way.

  So again, what am I selling points was just trying to get
• 20:25
  people to say, hey, come, come here at down.

  Come see, it's a wonderful spot, right?

  We'll go there later, but So what was the reaction when you?

  You must have have three, four? Five.

  Couldn't get a date that you have.

  I need schools. Exactly.

  I reached out and I date schools, jump on right away and

  I stopped there and I was afraid of chasing the morgue.

  I know I can handle. I was like that's kind of our

  think I'm a problem. Yeah that's more than I thought

  right? And we're big program.

  Thanks. So that's they're all small

  schools and they brought about 20 to 30 kids each and it was
• 21:00
  great. We think we can handle 12 to 15
• 21:02
  schools and what we're shooting for this year.

  What was the other athletes and other coaches reaction at the
• 21:08
  end of the meat? When they got done throwing the
• 21:09
  discus on the baseball and the relays and everybody, I got zero
• 21:13
  negative feedback on anything out there except for the disc
• 21:17
  has a few parents. You heard chirping complaining?
• 21:20
  I can't be the throne discus off the dirt, we're like hello
• 21:23
  street meat, you know, the alternative is, we don't throw
• 21:28
