- 0:19Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast. We made it. It is game week,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Monday evening, before playing the UTEP Miners, Hunter Zarbniky, Austin Rose,
- 0:33Speaker 1: Dakota free tag. I'm just gonna say it because I
- 0:37Speaker 1: know Dak's verse words out of his mouth are gonna be.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I was four and oh on my picks.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Congrats what were you this weekend? Hunter?
- 0:51Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about it. I just faded
- 0:53Speaker 1: everything that you did, so do the math.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I knew those picture locks the whole time. I just
- 1:02Speaker 3: got even really went into it.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You didn't even know which team was favored.
- 1:05Speaker 4: In one of the games, but he knew who was
- 1:09Speaker 4: gonna win.
- 1:11Speaker 3: They should almost covered eleven and a half too, but they
- 1:14Speaker 3: believed that game. Oh well, I I covered most of
- 1:19Speaker 3: those the Flying Colors too. They were not even that close.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You didn't even know until I texted you at ten
- 1:24Speaker 1: am the next I don't want to hear it.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I haven't back and checked it out though.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You had no clue. But props, congrats, good start, seventy
- 1:36Speaker 1: percent looking good.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Oh there's still twelve.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It go down there a lot of games left.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good for some four to oh, but it
- 1:45Speaker 2: can go downhill. Quick.
- 1:48Speaker 1: How about for State going down?
- 1:52Speaker 4: That's rough.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'm not a big dju fan. I mean that's Clemson hate,
- 2:01Speaker 3: but I don't think that dude can throw the ball
- 2:05Speaker 3: very well at all. Yeah, I'm never I've never been
- 2:07Speaker 3: big on him.
- 2:07Speaker 4: How many years has he been in college football?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Only three or two years of Clemson, one in Oregon Stadia.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He's probably senior this year.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Last year was he was at Oregon State?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he had a pretty good year there too, But.
- 2:31Speaker 1: God, I think that was.
- 2:36Speaker 3: The thirteen completions didn't even go five yards in the air,
- 2:40Speaker 3: So that goes right there.
- 2:41Speaker 2: The coach steppesn't believe in.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Him well, and that seems to be what he was
- 2:46Speaker 1: doing at Oregon State too. It just yeah, I don't know.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I think he was a guy that had a really
- 2:52Speaker 1: good few games. I would say, like similar to like
- 2:55Speaker 1: a Graham Mertz that he looked really well for a
- 2:59Speaker 1: couple of games when he was a freshman, and now
- 3:02Speaker 1: he's just bouncing all over the place. But I think
- 3:05Speaker 1: Florida State was a lot of people's well, we saw
- 3:07Speaker 1: it on college game Day that a lot of them
- 3:10Speaker 1: had them either the top four seed of winning the
- 3:12Speaker 1: ACC or at least in the playoffs, So we'll, we'll.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'm not saying one loss is it puts him out
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the conversation. Definitely doesn't. But it was. It was
- 3:22Speaker 1: good to have football back in a good competitive game,
- 3:27Speaker 1: especially from that one, and I guess all of them.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I mean, I think the two big underdogs, Hawaii with
- 3:33Speaker 1: a big favorite they wanted wasn't as much. Yeah, you
- 3:37Speaker 1: watched every minute of it, didn't you. Yep. And then
- 3:41Speaker 1: SMU squeaking out a win over Nevada, which I think
- 3:45Speaker 1: was surprising to some people. I thought Nevada was horrible
- 3:48Speaker 1: and that was actually my favorite bed of the day
- 3:51Speaker 1: and did not happen. So again, congrats stack knew.
- 3:57Speaker 4: That.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah wow, that's uh wasn't good. Long season ahead, Long
- 4:05Speaker 1: season ahead.
- 4:06Speaker 3: So that's what that's what's good about this new playoff
- 4:09Speaker 3: is though last year for US, they would have been
- 4:11Speaker 3: done already, their season be shot it last year. Yeah
- 4:16Speaker 3: that's true. I mean there's a little bit of quarterback
- 4:20Speaker 3: problem on that one, but yeah, that's at least it
- 4:25Speaker 3: keeps teams like that still alive, like the fans and
- 4:27Speaker 3: your host be shot already one weekend.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the point point of the college football season
- 4:35Speaker 1: that we're at right now, just finding anything that we
- 4:38Speaker 1: can talk about. Is good to have football back, and
- 4:40Speaker 1: there's a lot of Nebraska talk, but no games yet,
- 4:46Speaker 1: so we do and will get to some of the
- 4:50Speaker 1: updates from coach Rule and the press conference today that
- 4:54Speaker 1: he had on Monday. Some good stuff. It was a
- 4:57Speaker 1: lengthy one, it was, it was long, but there's some
- 5:01Speaker 1: good stuff in there. I think, as we all know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: Rule has always been very good with his words and
- 5:09Speaker 1: how he presents everything, and I think again here did
- 5:12Speaker 1: a really good job of setting the stage for the year.
- 5:16Speaker 1: A lot of praise for UTEP, and our official UTEP
- 5:20Speaker 1: preview will be here in a couple of days. We'll
- 5:22Speaker 1: come out with it on Thursday morning. We'll go through
- 5:26Speaker 1: some key players that you know, talked about, a couple
- 5:28Speaker 1: of defensive linemen for them that do a good job
- 5:31Speaker 1: in their their up tempo, fast paced offense that this
- 5:35Speaker 1: coaching staff, Barrant at Austin P if you guys remember
- 5:38Speaker 1: Austin P was with Tennessee last year. Early on it
- 5:43Speaker 1: was like six six right before halftime or something like that.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Very competitive. So a lot more UTEP conversation, What do
- 5:50Speaker 1: you what have you guys heard so far from the
- 5:54Speaker 1: Husker news.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Outside of rules praise, expects to win, that's what I've heard.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Excited to see real.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Your depth truck came out. Looks like Alvona won the
- 6:07Speaker 2: kicking job.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I didn't I say or you don't know yet?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Did it say?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Or?
- 6:15Speaker 4: Or? And he's not doing a kickoffs?
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yeah, So to act your first Huster for football take
- 6:22Speaker 1: of the year is just wrong.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Well, you do have four running backs still you don't
- 6:27Speaker 3: know which one is gonna be that starter?
- 6:29Speaker 1: We do. Yeah, I think that was the most surprising
- 6:35Speaker 1: thing and we all got asked about it today as well,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that there's four guys and he said they're all gonna play,
- 6:44Speaker 1: those guys being Emmett Johnson, Ramir Johnson, Gabourban and Dante Daldell.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So it's not a I mean, first, second, third, fourth string.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You can think of them all as type for first.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Obviously somebody's going to get the first snap and first carry,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but right now it just seems like we are very similar.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna use that word at that position, but I
- 7:06Speaker 1: wanted to get your thoughts, like what we'll read into
- 7:10Speaker 1: it because that's what we need to do to talk
- 7:11Speaker 1: about stuff today. But what do we think about four
- 7:15Speaker 1: running backs right now? Good? Bad?
- 7:19Speaker 4: I think it's good. That means that there isn't an
- 7:22Speaker 4: obvious I mean it's good and bad. There isn't an
- 7:24Speaker 4: obvious guy who's heading shouls about everyone else. But I
- 7:28Speaker 4: think we feel good about like Emma Johnson from last year.
- 7:32Speaker 4: So if you feel good about him going into this year,
- 7:34Speaker 4: I mean you should feel the same way about everyone
- 7:36Speaker 4: because the coaching staff sees them on that same level.
- 7:39Speaker 4: So I think it's a good thing.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I probably can't be a bad thing if you
- 7:44Speaker 2: have four good running backs.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I mean.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It's well, I don't know, it can't be great either,
- 7:52Speaker 2: because that means that you don't have a stud right.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah. I think you guys are getting at what everybody
- 7:59Speaker 1: probably thinks is that And really, to mention it, there's
- 8:02Speaker 1: no one's really stood out amongst the group, which is
- 8:07Speaker 1: that good or bad? I don't know, a little bit scary.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Maybe they're all just average backs. And I think we've
- 8:14Speaker 1: talked about that too, right, I think we've said that's
- 8:17Speaker 1: potentially what we have in the backfield. But I think
- 8:19Speaker 1: that's good to have average depths all the way down
- 8:23Speaker 1: through guy number four whoever. That may be. The interesting
- 8:29Speaker 1: thing he did say, though, is that that'll probably change
- 8:32Speaker 1: year or week three or four. So basically it sounded
- 8:35Speaker 1: like no one really stood out. He's hoping someone would
- 8:38Speaker 1: stand out. They have it gonna give us some game time.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing is going to be one
- 8:44Speaker 1: who's gonna put the volume turf and turn it over.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You don't do that, you're gonna be in the running
- 8:49Speaker 1: in week four. And who can break a big play
- 8:52Speaker 1: and who can be explosive out of the backfield. And
- 8:54Speaker 1: it could be in the passing game as well, depending
- 8:57Speaker 1: on how they utilize the backs with Rayola. So there's
- 9:02Speaker 1: a lot of question marks there. I again, I don't
- 9:05Speaker 1: think it's bad necessarily, but I rule just seemed a
- 9:08Speaker 1: little bit. I was disappointed, but he just did. He
- 9:10Speaker 1: just said, I was hoping somebody would step out, but
- 9:13Speaker 1: no one's there yet, and we'll figure it out here
- 9:16Speaker 1: in a few weeks. So I think that's the big
- 9:19Speaker 1: takeaway from the depth chart, And as Dak falsely mentioned,
- 9:22Speaker 1: the kicker not being decided yet, so up in the air.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Who we'll see you against the first extra point in
- 9:30Speaker 1: the first field goal. I'm guessing they'll probably alternate some.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It sounds like there's going to be some more competitions
- 9:36Speaker 1: going on this week with the kicking game. I think
- 9:39Speaker 1: that's a lot of people's concern right now too. If
- 9:42Speaker 1: they're both equal, I guess it's fine, but I don't
- 9:44Speaker 1: think either one's great. We just got to be able
- 9:47Speaker 1: to be solid there. We cannot hurt ourselves like we
- 9:50Speaker 1: have in the past.
- 9:52Speaker 4: It'd be really nice to see Alvanna be a little
- 9:54Speaker 4: more consistent on that longer, mid to longer range. I
- 9:59Speaker 4: said last week when we were talking about the depth
- 10:01Speaker 4: that was last week. Yeah, we were talking about the
- 10:03Speaker 4: depth chart, and it's like he has a leg. He
- 10:05Speaker 4: does have the second second longest kick in Husker history,
- 10:08Speaker 4: and he was pretty consistent under thirty. It's that that
- 10:12Speaker 4: thirty to low higher thirty, lower forty range I was
- 10:15Speaker 4: struggling last year.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, he can have all the power he wants,
- 10:21Speaker 3: but you want and you want care come out there,
- 10:24Speaker 3: think he's gonna make it, and now you you're iffy
- 10:27Speaker 3: he's gonna make any kick.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Right, taking so hard right because you don't want to
- 10:34Speaker 1: ever publicly not give confidence in the guy because that
- 10:39Speaker 1: messes up everything internally. So I have the medical there's
- 10:44Speaker 1: some truth to it, to to what you have to say.
- 10:47Speaker 1: But the same time, bottom line as we can have
- 10:49Speaker 1: guys that want to make kicks not are afraid to
- 10:52Speaker 1: go out there and droll on. I think Rule is
- 10:54Speaker 1: that on Friday talked about I can't remember what it was,
- 10:58Speaker 1: some sort of syndrome they that makes He said, there's
- 11:03Speaker 1: very few guys in our team that make it all
- 11:04Speaker 1: about them and it's always all about the rest of
- 11:07Speaker 1: the team. And a couple of the podcasts I've listened
- 11:10Speaker 1: to they're picking that as every podcast is doing right
- 11:13Speaker 1: now and saying, how I mean, sometimes you want guys
- 11:16Speaker 1: that want the ball to be in their hands and
- 11:19Speaker 1: want to be the one to make the tackle and
- 11:21Speaker 1: want to be the one to go make the kick.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And I think that's true. I don't think I don't
- 11:26Speaker 1: think anybody would say that that's what Rule was saying
- 11:28Speaker 1: by that, But I think what he was saying was
- 11:30Speaker 1: we have a lot of selfless guys. Oh, in the
- 11:32Speaker 1: talk around that came to the numbers, when I think
- 11:36Speaker 1: we had three guys that were number eighteen, and basically
- 11:42Speaker 1: two of them came in and just voluntarily said nope,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I'm good. Like one of them being Bushini, is saying,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you know, I'm good. I can do something different. So
- 11:52Speaker 1: I think that's good. I think that's a good quality
- 11:53Speaker 1: to have in a team. But at the same time,
- 11:56Speaker 1: we want guys that can go out and make us
- 11:58Speaker 1: the winning plays, and we got to figure out who
- 12:01Speaker 1: that is. We obviously haven't won many games, and we
- 12:04Speaker 1: need to do that. Who are those guys gonna be?
- 12:07Speaker 1: Is Dylan Ryola? Are we gonna We're gonna look at
- 12:09Speaker 1: him in the fourth quarter down seven and say go
- 12:13Speaker 1: win us a ball game? We might that might be
- 12:15Speaker 1: the case. But what other guys out there can go
- 12:18Speaker 1: make a play on defense or offense, big catch, break
- 12:21Speaker 1: a couple of tackles, obviously, go make it, go pick
- 12:23Speaker 1: a ball, get a strip, fumble. What guys are going
- 12:27Speaker 1: to do that? And I think rules says that all
- 12:30Speaker 1: the time. We have to learn how to win games,
- 12:33Speaker 1: and we're gonna play the guys that are gonna win
- 12:34Speaker 1: games for us. Yeah, I agree.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Now I might have read the depth O wrong game.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Did Malvink Coleman? Is he a third string or out.
- 12:49Speaker 1: We we did wonder where he was gonna fall. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: can't remember exactly where he fell.
- 12:56Speaker 2: He was.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I think he's third string on. I can't remember what
- 12:59Speaker 3: why is he group he was in, But.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the wide receiving group was for the most part,
- 13:09Speaker 1: I thought as expected. We talked about Malachi potentially not
- 13:14Speaker 1: making it hard to get on the list. I mean,
- 13:16Speaker 1: there's some guys that we've we thought that would be
- 13:20Speaker 1: ahead of them, and we thought Banks and there would
- 13:22Speaker 1: be two of them, and they are. The surprising one
- 13:25Speaker 1: that 'll talked about today too is to Hire and
- 13:28Speaker 1: Bonner in the slot. And I will say this too,
- 13:32Speaker 1: just in general, I think ten years ago, when you
- 13:35Speaker 1: think of a slot receiver, you think of the West Welkers,
- 13:38Speaker 1: the Jordan Western Camps, the small, quick, shifty guys. Bonner's
- 13:43Speaker 1: obviously not that he's a converted fullback that lost a
- 13:49Speaker 1: couple of pounds, but it still has a good, strong
- 13:51Speaker 1: build for wide receiver. And you're seeing more teams moving
- 13:54Speaker 1: their slot to more of that bigger body. That way
- 13:56Speaker 1: you can move them around and if you want to
- 13:58Speaker 1: have some run game off of it. So but I
- 14:01Speaker 1: think that speaks volume to what they think he brings
- 14:05Speaker 1: to the team, and we'll talk about his versatility and
- 14:08Speaker 1: the different things he can do and that, Yeah, if
- 14:10Speaker 1: we still go eleven personnel, he can still come in
- 14:12Speaker 1: and play full back like it's not just because there's
- 14:14Speaker 1: no fullback on the depth chart doesn't mean that he
- 14:17Speaker 1: can't do.
- 14:17Speaker 4: That, right, The slot spot is yeah, because it's got him.
- 14:21Speaker 4: I gc Isaidah Garciada Carsoneda, and Carter Nelson all on
- 14:24Speaker 4: that on the depth chart. Three very different players, like
- 14:30Speaker 4: totally different builds, totally different skill.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Sets, and they'll probably all three be used.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Imagine Jayalen Lloyd back up the banks, which I think
- 14:43Speaker 1: we're gonna see him a lot out there. Cory Varney
- 14:45Speaker 1: is sitting there too, ahead of Alex Bullock, which, no,
- 14:49Speaker 1: that's Alex Bullock. But that's good. I mean, that's a
- 14:51Speaker 1: good sign that a guy like.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Bark Hey, he was our best receiver last year.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you for pointing that out. So I
- 14:59Speaker 1: think that that always the.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Guards, sir.
- 15:02Speaker 3: What was that, Yeah, Alec Alex Bullock actually had the
- 15:05Speaker 3: most yards last year.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Uh for a wide receiver. I think he was close.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Okay, I'll pull it up.
- 15:12Speaker 4: You keep talking.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I don't know if we really need to know that
- 15:16Speaker 1: stat but yeah, I did not know that tight end
- 15:22Speaker 1: as expected. Uh PDONI starting there Bullock constrictor, Nate Borkischer
- 15:29Speaker 1: right behind him. Uh And then offensive line as our
- 15:34Speaker 1: projected depth chart had him, starting from left to right
- 15:37Speaker 1: is Turner Corkoran, Justin Evans on the left side, Ben
- 15:40Speaker 1: Scott center, Michael Mazuka, and Ben Hard on the right side.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So it overall, there's not there's not many surprises here.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And I think another key thing when you talk about
- 15:52Speaker 1: the orrors, and it speaks even more to what we
- 15:54Speaker 1: were talking earlier with the running backs. There's no orrors
- 15:56Speaker 1: on this offensive side until you get to the running backs,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and I think that just tells you that the coaching
- 16:00Speaker 1: staff has made their mind up on everything, but running
- 16:04Speaker 1: backs still have room to prove. How they get used
- 16:08Speaker 1: is going to be interesting. And I do want to
- 16:11Speaker 1: spend a little time talking about what your guys's thoughts are.
- 16:16Speaker 1: We can talk more Wednesday about it. What's this offense
- 16:19Speaker 1: going to look like? We saw it in spring game
- 16:23Speaker 1: glipses of ryol up right, But obviously that was back
- 16:28Speaker 1: in April and we're sitting here in August. How what
- 16:33Speaker 1: what's the run pass ratio going to look like? Like?
- 16:36Speaker 1: What is this offense gonna do? And we don't know,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and Rule's not saying too much about it, but he
- 16:41Speaker 1: is hinting at certain things. So what are your guys' thoughts?
- 16:44Speaker 1: What's it going to look like?
- 16:46Speaker 4: I feel like it's gonna be a lot of run
- 16:50Speaker 4: the ball, short passes to tight short passes the tight
- 16:54Speaker 4: end in the middle, and then deep balls down the side.
- 16:56Speaker 4: That's why I think it's gonna be.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I was super complex, totally different than last year's team.
- 17:06Speaker 2: For sure.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Throw the ball a lot more. I yeah, I kind
- 17:10Speaker 3: of like what you said. I think you're gonna have
- 17:13Speaker 3: a lot more deep shots this year. Tied in across
- 17:16Speaker 3: the middle, I don't think. I don't think you're gonna
- 17:20Speaker 3: throw oil out there at least early on throwing the
- 17:22Speaker 3: ball thirty five four eight times a game.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I don't know what our exact percentage was last year,
- 17:29Speaker 1: but it was definitely run heavy thought.
- 17:33Speaker 4: I think it was like fifty five running forty five
- 17:37Speaker 4: past question mark.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And I know we were one of more run heavy
- 17:42Speaker 1: teams in the country from a percentage in yardage standpoint.
- 17:46Speaker 1: As well, which I think was what we had last year.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So yeah, I was interested to see what you guys thought,
- 17:55Speaker 1: because I I just have a hunch. This is my hunch.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's not I guess it is a prediction. Take the
- 18:02Speaker 1: way Rule talks makes me feel like more along Dacks
- 18:07Speaker 1: lines that we're gonna throw at thirty five forty times
- 18:09Speaker 1: a game and it might look ugly and people might
- 18:12Speaker 1: be upset because today he talked about we're playing Dylan
- 18:17Speaker 1: Royola like it's going to be his junior year. We
- 18:21Speaker 1: want to be putting stuff in now. What we're going
- 18:25Speaker 1: to run run at the end of the end of
- 18:27Speaker 1: the season. The last game he talked about being very,
- 18:30Speaker 1: very important and so building everything around that thought on
- 18:34Speaker 1: what we want to look like the last three four
- 18:36Speaker 1: games of the year. We're gonna work on that now.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And he talked about how it might not look pretty
- 18:40Speaker 1: at times, but there has to be patience and tweaking.
- 18:43Speaker 1: You can't just scrap everything if it doesn't look good.
- 18:46Speaker 1: And then he caught himself and he's like, but we
- 18:48Speaker 1: are going to run the ball. We are we are
- 18:50Speaker 1: gonna we are gonna go out there and still run.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So to me, he like he knows in Nebraska fans,
- 18:56Speaker 1: the old the old timers, and people that all the
- 19:00Speaker 1: success when we were really good want to see us
- 19:03Speaker 1: run the ball a lot. I think that's still going
- 19:05Speaker 1: to be a part of it, and he says it is,
- 19:07Speaker 1: But I think it's not gonna be what people think,
- 19:10Speaker 1: which makes me think it is going to be a
- 19:12Speaker 1: lot more throwing. But I don't think it's gonna be
- 19:14Speaker 1: like a Texas Tech Air raid throw. It's gonna be
- 19:20Speaker 1: what you said, Austin. I think a lot of dink
- 19:22Speaker 1: and Dunk's potential taking a long shot. What I keep
- 19:27Speaker 1: hearing him talk about Ryola is his strong ability to
- 19:32Speaker 1: read a defense and comprehend things that a typical freshman
- 19:38Speaker 1: or any quarterback that we've had recently hasn't been able
- 19:42Speaker 1: to do in the passing game, specifically, like think about
- 19:46Speaker 1: him in the pocket right, how many of our previous
- 19:50Speaker 1: quarterbacks when we see a blitz one can they identify
- 19:54Speaker 1: it pre snap? And two when some guys coming at him?
- 19:58Speaker 1: What has been a lot of their reaction run run, run,
- 20:03Speaker 1: But I'm gonna get gonna do a little bit of
- 20:06Speaker 1: back on College football twenty five comparison, they just flip
- 20:09Speaker 1: their hips and kind of turn around, run backwards right
- 20:12Speaker 1: and try to scoot around, dance around the backside. And
- 20:15Speaker 1: like Adrian was good at that, Taylor Martinez was good
- 20:19Speaker 1: at that. Tommy Armstrong he had the fame. His big
- 20:22Speaker 1: move was the five step drop him and the flip
- 20:24Speaker 1: of the hips and would run around the outside. I
- 20:26Speaker 1: think Ryola is gonna step up in the pocket and
- 20:29Speaker 1: he's gonna have his mechanics down to where, yeah, if
- 20:32Speaker 1: we take a sack, it might just be a four
- 20:34Speaker 1: or five yard sack and not so much of panic mode,
- 20:41Speaker 1: hot route, hot route x y Z, which is what
- 20:44Speaker 1: was happening a lot of times with these athletic quarterbacks
- 20:46Speaker 1: that we've had. So it's gonna look different, I think
- 20:49Speaker 1: in that aspect. But I think it's only gonna help
- 20:51Speaker 1: our offense. But I do I think there's gonna be
- 20:56Speaker 1: some deep balls in there. I expect this against you
- 21:00Speaker 1: have to take four or five shots down the field minimum.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I think that's part of the offense. Last year, our
- 21:07Speaker 1: split was sixty four thirty six running the ball. I
- 21:10Speaker 1: was not thinking about how our quarterbacks ran in for
- 21:14Speaker 1: two hundred of our four hundred and fifty.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Bullock was second in receiving receptions, third in receiving yards
- 21:24Speaker 4: for receivers.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Rule continues to use the word complimentary football, and he
- 21:32Speaker 1: talks about the offense. He said a lot of that
- 21:35Speaker 1: last year as well. Complimentary football. That's a very vague
- 21:39Speaker 1: term that basically just means our run should feed the pass,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and our pass would feed the run. I like that answer.
- 21:46Speaker 1: It's just very vague. It doesn't give you a whole
- 21:48Speaker 1: lot of insight. But guys, I just have a hunch. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: Ryle is thrown at thirty five or forty times, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: there's gonna be some adversity early on, maybe even in
- 22:00Speaker 1: the UTEB game, but Colorado game. We have the teams
- 22:04Speaker 1: that maybe we can have it, but it's it. It
- 22:06Speaker 1: might take some patience if this is how they want
- 22:10Speaker 1: to run their offense, and if it doesn't work out
- 22:12Speaker 1: in the end, it could be a very poor ending.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But I'm not going to go that far right now.
- 22:19Speaker 1: In Week one before we even play a Week one game.
- 22:23Speaker 3: When they when they say count Mary football too, I
- 22:25Speaker 3: think they mean count Mary. You can be cant marry
- 22:27Speaker 3: towards your defense to help them out. You can run
- 22:30Speaker 3: down the because last year, you didn't help them out
- 22:33Speaker 3: one baity. That card of game was one of the
- 22:36Speaker 3: worst not comerry football se defense you could have had.
- 22:40Speaker 3: So you want to control the ball more and yeah,
- 22:43Speaker 3: not have them on the field gast the whole game.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean when we got down last year, we
- 22:49Speaker 1: didn't get down big and too many games. But the
- 22:52Speaker 1: Colorado game is a perfect example. I mean, once we're
- 22:56Speaker 1: down two three touchdowns, it's game over. Like our offense,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it was not built to put up points fast and
- 23:02Speaker 1: then our defense stay fresh out there. It was You
- 23:06Speaker 1: saw the games that we competed in a lot of them,
- 23:08Speaker 1: how those went. I don't think it's gonna look like
- 23:10Speaker 1: that this year. It's gonna look a little different. So
- 23:12Speaker 1: I'll be curious to rules comments how that plays out.
- 23:16Speaker 1: He was almost prepping people's minds to be patient with
- 23:20Speaker 1: what this offense could do, but without without putting anybody
- 23:23Speaker 1: down and saying that's gonna struggle, which he's not gonna
- 23:26Speaker 1: say and can't say, but be patient with what it
- 23:29Speaker 1: could look like. That's my hunch. Like I could be wrong.
- 23:32Speaker 1: We could come out and run it sixty percent of
- 23:34Speaker 1: the time, and Ramier could have fourteen carries, and it
- 23:37Speaker 1: could have twelve and Irban doubt l each have eight.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Maybe it could, but I don't. I don't think they're
- 23:43Speaker 1: gonna play Ryola as a game manager. They're not gonna
- 23:45Speaker 1: do it. I don't think he would be happy with that.
- 23:48Speaker 1: If we're seven and five at the end of the
- 23:50Speaker 1: year and all he was was a game manager. I don't.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I don't think that's what's gonna happen. I don't know
- 23:57Speaker 1: what that means. I think obviously you want to get first,
- 24:00Speaker 1: if that's the best way to win. That's all we've
- 24:02Speaker 1: said we need right from a quarterback is someone that
- 24:04Speaker 1: can just go out and game manage, not turn it over.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I don't think our offense is gonna look like last
- 24:11Speaker 1: year though, less of turnovers, it's gonna look different. That's
- 24:15Speaker 1: just my hunch, and I mean, you've got a major
- 24:17Speaker 1: problem if it does well. I mean, look from a
- 24:20Speaker 1: production standpoint, yes, but I'm just talking from a style
- 24:23Speaker 1: standpoint and what we're trying to get there's there's gonna
- 24:26Speaker 1: be some similar things, I think, but we're gonna we're
- 24:28Speaker 1: gonna use our playmakers. We're gonna use these speed guys,
- 24:30Speaker 1: and we're gonna use Royola. It's it's it's gonna look
- 24:33Speaker 1: different in my mind. So any other offensive comments.
- 24:38Speaker 3: It's is he quick enough to do any read option
- 24:41Speaker 3: or you think that's out the window.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I think the quarterback ground game is gonna be minimal.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I guess yeah, before we move on, I think that
- 24:49Speaker 1: brings up a good point with Heiner Karberg and how
- 24:51Speaker 1: he's gonna get used. He will get used. I'm not
- 24:55Speaker 1: sure if he will in the UTEB game, but he's
- 24:58Speaker 1: gonna play. I don't know where.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Rule when he was going announced QB one, he was.
- 25:04Speaker 4: He was the first guy that was told was Harvard.
- 25:07Speaker 4: So you know, Rule likes and respects. He's like, he's like,
- 25:10Speaker 4: oh yeah, this guy's like Scott Frost. You know, it's
- 25:13Speaker 4: like he really liked him. He's gonna get.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he uh, there's gonna be some packages for him.
- 25:22Speaker 1: We got to remember, guys, he won US football games
- 25:25Speaker 1: last year. Like it's not it's not like when he
- 25:28Speaker 1: comes in the game at quarterback, it's like, oh my god,
- 25:30Speaker 1: he's going to run the ball.
- 25:31Speaker 4: It wasn't Jeff Simms last year when he came in,
- 25:34Speaker 4: You're like, oh my gosh, this man is going to
- 25:36Speaker 4: fumble the ball like he had his turnovers, he had
- 25:39Speaker 4: his moments, but yes, he was not that we were
- 25:43Speaker 4: not worried about him on the field.
- 25:48Speaker 3: He must have improved a lot to this offseason the
- 25:51Speaker 3: way they've been talking about him.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean in the passing game as well. So
- 25:56Speaker 1: oh and I guess he when we knew this, he
- 25:58Speaker 1: is the for sure number two and Danny Kalin is
- 26:00Speaker 1: the definite three, which is interesting that Graham Stead isn't
- 26:04Speaker 1: even an ORR on there, so that is worth noting.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Defensive side of the ball, no warrors here. Uh, And
- 26:15Speaker 1: I think from what we had estimated or predicted, it's
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's pretty much on point. We still or we were
- 26:26Speaker 1: pretty pretty accurate on our secondary The key talk I
- 26:30Speaker 1: think in the press conference was about the linebackers. I mean,
- 26:35Speaker 1: Rule is pretty confident in them, which that was our
- 26:38Speaker 1: big question mark when we went through our defensive preview,
- 26:41Speaker 1: was like when.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Your coach is like, I'm really confident in this one
- 26:45Speaker 4: particular position, that we were all like, none of us
- 26:47Speaker 4: are really confident in this one particular position. It makes
- 26:49Speaker 4: you feel like, well, maybe he's not so confident, but
- 26:52Speaker 4: he needs to say.
- 26:53Speaker 1: It right to get people to believe it. The position
- 26:57Speaker 1: that he was a little bit if he on was
- 26:59Speaker 1: a secondary, which which I think that was in my mind,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I interpreted that more of a this is what UTEP's
- 27:06Speaker 1: gonna bring on Saturday, and we have some guys playing
- 27:09Speaker 1: some new spots, but it's gonna be a fast paced,
- 27:11Speaker 1: high tempo, no huddle type offense. They're gonna throw it
- 27:15Speaker 1: around a lot and it's gonna be hot. We have
- 27:19Speaker 1: guys that a lot that can play, but we're not
- 27:21Speaker 1: as deep there in the secondary to where if we
- 27:26Speaker 1: do need to be subbing a lot, which it sounds
- 27:28Speaker 1: like we're going to, there's gonna be some guys playing
- 27:31Speaker 1: that we haven't seen. I mean, you look at our
- 27:33Speaker 1: number two's there's a lot of guys that we at
- 27:36Speaker 1: are freshmen or juniors at are guys that we haven't
- 27:39Speaker 1: seen play many minutes, so they'll be out there. Black
- 27:43Speaker 1: Hill is one that is still banged up and injured.
- 27:47Speaker 1: That's why he's sitting there at three. I think people
- 27:48Speaker 1: were a little like concerned is why he fell down,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but it's more of an injury thing. It sounds like.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Since the spring game.
- 27:55Speaker 1: So so no, no, no word on Jabbin writ either
- 28:02Speaker 1: it didn't it sounds like he's not healthy. He's not
- 28:04Speaker 1: listed obviously here this week. But yeah, no, no ords.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I mean it's it's pretty straightforward. Uh. The defensive line,
- 28:12Speaker 1: as expected, had a lot of positive things that were
- 28:15Speaker 1: said about him and a lot of guys that can play,
- 28:17Speaker 1: and I think we're going to see a lot of
- 28:20Speaker 1: different names. They even went three deep on a couple
- 28:23Speaker 1: of the d ns that hints that maybe even guys
- 28:27Speaker 1: like Kai Wallen and James Williams, you might actually see
- 28:31Speaker 1: him out there on Saturday and there.
- 28:35Speaker 4: They said some good thing about James Willen Williams last
- 28:38Speaker 4: week you see him out there.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Uh. Special teams we talked about Albano and John Hole
- 28:46Speaker 1: not really knowing there kickoff it's John hol or Bushini
- 28:51Speaker 1: kicking off there.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Uh did I tell you Alvanu sansbring is still not good?
- 28:58Speaker 1: Then maybe I don't know. It sounds like rules as
- 29:03Speaker 1: he's healthy. I I just I just don't think we're
- 29:07Speaker 1: strong there. I don't think Elvano is Like Alvano's not
- 29:10Speaker 1: the guy that if he's healthy, he's a definitely kicker.
- 29:12Speaker 1: He wasn't that he wasn't good enough last year to
- 29:15Speaker 1: just walk in and earn a starting spot. Yeah, so
- 29:19Speaker 1: Ramiir Johnson, j Cory Varney, Dax boy I, GC, all
- 29:25Speaker 1: guys who were expecting to see back there in the
- 29:28Speaker 1: return game. Anything else, special teams, it's just havanna.
- 29:35Speaker 4: That's the only thing you want to know. How healthy
- 29:39Speaker 4: is he? Is he going to be better this year?
- 29:45Speaker 1: All right? But yeah, we will uh touch base more
- 29:48Speaker 1: on utef here on Wednesday before we move on from
- 29:54Speaker 1: college football. First thing, I'm going to introduce something that
- 29:59Speaker 1: us three are going to do. Here is a survivor
- 30:03Speaker 1: pool for college football. So NFL survivor pool. You pick
- 30:07Speaker 1: a winner, you get it right, you move on to
- 30:09Speaker 1: the next week. If you pick a loser, you're done.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You're eliminated. We're gonna see which one of us three
- 30:15Speaker 1: last the longest, well to see if if we're out
- 30:19Speaker 1: early enough, maybe we'll give a second chance. Here's how
- 30:23Speaker 1: we're gonna do this. You got to pick who should
- 30:26Speaker 1: we do three or four? Let's do four three. There's
- 30:32Speaker 1: enough college football teams out there that's fair four times twelve. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:39Speaker 1: we'll do four. You got to pick four outright winners,
- 30:43Speaker 1: not against the spread. Just to win the game every week.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Once you use that team up, you cannot use them
- 30:49Speaker 1: again the rest of the year. So there's very different
- 30:53Speaker 1: ways to go about this. There's obviously gonna be several
- 30:57Speaker 1: weeks where there's teams that are favored by forty. You
- 31:01Speaker 1: can use them early. You can save those teams for later.
- 31:04Speaker 1: But you got to pick four every week and all
- 31:05Speaker 1: four of them have to win. We will start with
- 31:09Speaker 1: our picks on Wednesday, so I wanted to give you
- 31:11Speaker 1: guys a heads up to start thinking. I haven't even
- 31:13Speaker 1: looked at stuff yet, but we're gonna do that as
- 31:17Speaker 1: a challenge instead of every week trying to go through
- 31:20Speaker 1: and take a lot of games that that Thatchles will
- 31:23Speaker 1: do his picks. But okay, I.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Can handle that.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Who's taking you tip?
- 31:32Speaker 1: Not this week? Second thing? Got a comment on dak
- 31:37Speaker 1: I do I Oklahoma's got a big game this week,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and give you some time to explain what your scout
- 31:47Speaker 1: is on a Tulsa the other plane Temple new it
- 31:52Speaker 1: was a tea.
- 31:52Speaker 3: There's really only one thing I want to talk about
- 31:54Speaker 3: because I guarantee most listens don't care about plumb on here.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Did you guys, did you see TB three on was
- 32:00Speaker 2: Austin for Oklahoma. Casey Thompson won one third string time,
- 32:06Speaker 2: fresh him out.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yep, guess Kasey Thompson's age Austin. We looked this up too.
- 32:13Speaker 4: He's gotta be like twenty five five.
- 32:18Speaker 3: How cass he got to be It's sixty year he
- 32:21Speaker 3: goes there and there's probably no Sean Elly plays this
- 32:24Speaker 3: year now.
- 32:26Speaker 1: And then second piece of Oklahoma talk. But I know
- 32:29Speaker 1: some listeners do care about Dak. I want you to
- 32:32Speaker 1: tell me how your Red River shootout game went with
- 32:35Speaker 1: your brother on college football.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Next question, I lost, lost twenty seven to twenty through
- 32:45Speaker 3: three picked sixes. You know what rebound rebuild Yanks. That's
- 32:50Speaker 3: all Like I say about that, it's a bad game.
- 32:55Speaker 3: I'm still I'm still internes about it, and.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You will never stop. No.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I got a phone call about five o'clock tonight, still
- 33:03Speaker 3: still hearing about it.
- 33:08Speaker 1: All right, last order of business here before we go
- 33:12Speaker 1: fantasy football. Every year we do a little brief preview.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We'll talk about strategies, are thoughts, I like, even done
- 33:21Speaker 1: drafts on it before. We're not going to go that
- 33:23Speaker 1: in deep depth this year, but do you want to
- 33:28Speaker 1: get your guys thoughts on the upcoming year. How many
- 33:31Speaker 1: leagues you're in and he takes you go out on
- 33:35Speaker 1: any players.
- 33:39Speaker 4: I'm in three leagues. I don't like to be in
- 33:41Speaker 4: more than two. One of the leagues, I don't get
- 33:44Speaker 4: a draft. It's any the draft, and then that's the
- 33:46Speaker 4: team you get. I did have a question for you, guys.
- 33:50Speaker 4: I've been chewing on for a while, both gambling and fantasy.
- 33:54Speaker 4: The new special teams kickoff rules. Does that impact how
- 33:57Speaker 4: you draft defenses and or for point spreads? Are you
- 34:02Speaker 4: more likely to take the over because they're not going
- 34:04Speaker 4: to properly adjust for a higher point cause by the
- 34:07Speaker 4: new field position? Like do I want the Kansas City
- 34:11Speaker 4: Chiefs defense because I think Andrey Reid is gonna have
- 34:13Speaker 4: better special teams They're gonna get more points on.
- 34:14Speaker 3: The because there's a lot more returns.
- 34:20Speaker 2: And are you yeah? I think so.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I haven't looked what's the preseason stats show?
- 34:28Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 34:29Speaker 2: I have no.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I didn't watch many games, but the ones I did watch,
- 34:33Speaker 1: I didn't see many bigger turns. But your point us
- 34:36Speaker 1: and I think the field position was slightly better.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Yes, sorry, I offense gonna score more So for Gambley,
- 34:44Speaker 4: do I want to take the overs? And then for
- 34:46Speaker 4: fantasy do I want to take better special teams units
- 34:49Speaker 4: like the Kings State Chiefs as a defense and the
- 34:52Speaker 4: special teams over maybe more dominant regular defense.
- 34:56Speaker 1: That's a fascinating thought. As of right now, I'm just
- 35:00Speaker 1: gonna say no. But I think there could be some correlation,
- 35:04Speaker 1: like there could I I just don't. I don't know.
- 35:08Speaker 4: I've just been chewing on it. I can't either way.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I feel like the offense, the kickoffs are basically eliminated
- 35:14Speaker 3: before this year. Now, the preseason I watched a little bit.
- 35:18Speaker 3: I saw a lot more returns, like people are actually
- 35:20Speaker 3: taking out last year, right.
- 35:22Speaker 4: I think there's gonna be more returns. Is it gonna
- 35:24Speaker 4: result in more touchdowns?
- 35:26Speaker 3: I think?
- 35:27Speaker 1: But there's gonna be dack. You do realize the whole
- 35:30Speaker 1: point of putting the new rule and was still there
- 35:32Speaker 1: more returns? Like yeah, that's why.
- 35:34Speaker 4: They that increases having touchdowns because there's more correct But
- 35:40Speaker 4: it's like, I don't know something I want to you on.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Uh yeah, I'm in I'm in six leagues. That's to me.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It's a lot. Two of them, though, I will say
- 35:52Speaker 1: are dynasty leagues where my players will carry over, and
- 35:55Speaker 1: I'm in full cell mode on both of them, so
- 35:58Speaker 1: I don't expect to win many, if any games, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: I do have a lot of picks the next two
- 36:03Speaker 1: or three years, so that's promising one more draft left.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I think the consensus from a lot of people this
- 36:10Speaker 1: year in fantasy is the decline of the running back
- 36:15Speaker 1: the past couple of years. McCaffrey is going one and
- 36:18Speaker 1: a lot of people's drafts, but after that, there's four
- 36:22Speaker 1: or five receivers that you could argue could all go
- 36:24Speaker 1: before the second running back, which is typically brist Hall.
- 36:29Speaker 1: So I think that's a general theme in my drafts.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I'd kind of followed that and tried to get two
- 36:35Speaker 1: receivers in the first three rounds, not saying they've done
- 36:38Speaker 1: that in every draft. But the biggest thing I would
- 36:40Speaker 1: say to people is know your league, know your rules,
- 36:42Speaker 1: no the points, because it can vary, and everybody's got
- 36:46Speaker 1: unique different tweaks to their scoring and rosters and all
- 36:52Speaker 1: of that. So that's the most important thing as people
- 36:54Speaker 1: are drafting and finishing drafts up.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Guys, I made a real a couple of years ago.
- 37:03Speaker 3: I only do one league now, that's I don't like.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Here you have to people playing each other against different
- 37:09Speaker 3: teams two different leagues. I don't like that.
- 37:10Speaker 2: I only do one league.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's good. I like. I'm obviously the opposite
- 37:18Speaker 1: of that. But I do try to draft guys that
- 37:20Speaker 1: I like similarly, even if I have to reach a
- 37:22Speaker 1: firm a little bit more and try to avoid guys
- 37:25Speaker 1: I just think could be bus So I do stick
- 37:29Speaker 1: to that, but it does it happens where I'm playing
- 37:32Speaker 1: against guys that I have in other leagues, and I
- 37:34Speaker 1: do prioritize like one or two. Usually it's the ones
- 37:38Speaker 1: that I have the more expensive buy in, but I
- 37:42Speaker 1: prioritize those for sure, as far as waiver wire pickups,
- 37:45Speaker 1: trades and all of that, and then kind of round
- 37:48Speaker 1: out the other ones. But it's a good way, I
- 37:50Speaker 1: think still for just to stay in touch with different
- 37:53Speaker 1: friend groups. That's that's my big thing. That's why I'm
- 37:55Speaker 1: still in so many because there's different friend groups and
- 37:57Speaker 1: the part of and or coworkers that it makes good conversation.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I heard your coworker draft was last night.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, A plus draft great on Yahoo.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Uh huh, that's what I heard.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Ye so all right, Lady Husker.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Shout out Red White. Game went well. Andy Jackson looks
- 38:18Speaker 4: like a Stude's.
