- 0:00Is Apple's new M6 Mac worth it if you already
- 0:03own an M4 or M5? This is Tech Trends Daily. One
- 0:09useful story, three minutes. Apple's October
- 0:12refresh brings the new M6 chip to the 14 -inch
- 0:15MacBook Pro and the 24 -inch iMac. The MacBook
- 0:19Pro costs $19 .99 and the iMac starts at $14
- 0:23.99. Pre -orders open Wednesday, October 28th
- 0:26and both ship on Friday, November 6th. If you're
- 0:30buying your first Mac or replacing an M1, an
- 0:33M2, or an Intel machine, this is a strong upgrade.
- 0:36If you already own an M4 or M5, the case is much
- 0:40weaker. So what actually changed? The big change
- 0:44is inside. The M6 moves to a 2nm design and adds
- 0:49two cores to both the CPU and the GPU, compared
- 0:52with the M5's 10. Apple says that means up to
- 0:5630 % faster graphics and up to 25 % faster AI
- 1:01work. Both machines also get Apple's N1 chip,
- 1:04which brings Wi -Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. And what
- 1:08didn't change? The look. Same display, same ports,
- 1:12same weight on the MacBook Pro. Tom's Guide calls
- 1:15the two iMac generations identical twins from
- 1:18the outside. Here are three things to know. First...
- 1:23How big is the speed gain, really? Tom's Guide
- 1:26hasn't tested the M6 MacBook Pro yet. It did
- 1:30test the M6 in a Mac Mini, so treat the numbers
- 1:33as a guide, not a laptop result. Against last
- 1:36year's M5, single -core scores were roughly 30
- 1:40% higher, and multi -core, about 22 % higher.
- 1:44But Tom's Guide puts the overall power and efficiency
- 1:47gain at around 10 -15%. Its verdict? Noticeable.
- 1:52but nothing earth -shattering. Second, what you
- 1:55own right now decides almost everything. If it's
- 1:58an M1, an M2, or an Intel Mac, this is your upgrade.
- 2:02Tom's Guide expects a dramatic jump in performance
- 2:05and storage speed for M1 and M2 MacBook Pro owners.
- 2:09Own an M4 or M5 MacBook Pro? Those are still
- 2:13plenty powerful, and a 10 -15 % chip gain is
- 2:17hard to justify at $19 .99. On an M4 iMac. tom's
- 2:22guide says save your money unless your work leans
- 2:25on heavy local ai or big 3d rendering and if
- 2:29you're a first -time buyer the older models now
- 2:31cost the same so there's little reason to pick
- 2:34the older chip third do a quick check before
- 2:37you pre -order name the one task that feels slow
- 2:41today if you can't the upgrade probably won't
- 2:44change your day look at your router too because
- 2:47wi -fi 7 only helps if your home network supports
- 2:50it Remember, the $19 .99 price includes 16GB
- 2:55of RAM and 1TB of storage, and adding more costs
- 2:59more. And if you want a redesign, waiting may
- 3:02suit you, since Apple is reportedly saving that
- 3:05for the M7 model next year. Here's the line to
- 3:08repeat to a friend. If you're on an M1, an M2,
- 3:12or Intel, the M6 is a big step up. But if you
- 3:15already have an M4 or M5, you can probably skip
- 3:19it. with the comparison table, is linked in the
