- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello, and welcome to T-Boon Sports, One Fan All Game Podcast 16.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Week four of college football is over.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And last week's game for Alabama was probably one of the best they had all season.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: They were able to win 48 to or 49 to 18 against South Carolina.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Obviously, you know, we know that South Carolina is one of those teams in the SEC that's at the at the very, very bottom and not gonna be much of a problem for a lot of these, for these teams in in the SEC.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: But the last two games that Alabama started out really, really slow in the first half and then kind of came on and and and really put it on to the other the other two teams, Kentucky and Florida State, you know, in the in the second half.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: This week they came out firing and on fire and ready to go right off right off the bat in the first half.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: You know, five minutes, 33 seconds into the game.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: They were able to score their first touchdown, which, you know, started out good and and quick.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: That's what what, you know, Alabama really needed to do is to start out fast and and they were able to to really, really go and and do that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Obviously in the third quarter, uh a little bit of a struggle and and kind of took their foot off the gas and then you know, Caleb De Boer got on them and then they were able to to really, really go and and put on a good show in the fourth quarter, you know, and especially getting in into the end of the game there when you're able to, you know, and at the end of the first quarter, again, you know, you were able to to do another another another touchdown.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So to be able to end the first quarter, you know, get a touchdown early and then get a touchdown late in the first quarter and end the first quarter on a high note and and get and be up 14.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Nothing is is what they you know a good a good way.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, you know, starting, you know, starting off the second quarter, you know, South Carolina was able to get a field goal and you know, a good a good way on the defense to to only allow, especially, you know, at 10 minute 55 mark in the in the third quarter, early in the early in the second quarter, to allow a field goal is is what you need.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And it's it's to be able to do that and and to be able to get them, you know, let them on the board, but only get three is it was a was a strong way to to start out that third quarter.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: You know, seven minutes and twenty-two seconds left in the in the second quarter, again, go up another touchdown.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Now you're up three scores, four, you know, three scores, you know, and and you're able to to really show that dominance and really show where you know you are the better team, you can go, you know, march up and down the field to to do that, you know, and again, late in the second quarter, two and a half two minutes, twenty seconds left in the second quarter in the first half, go up, you know, you know, go up 38, 35 to the 35, you know, 30 and score real quick at 233 mark left in the second quarter, get a touchdown, get the ball back quickly, score again with two minutes twenty seconds left in the third in the second quarter.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: You know, you're up 35-0 already, pretty much going into halftime, you know, and then a a big letdown late in the late in the second quarter with 35 seconds left, you know, unfortunately, you know, allow them to get a touchdown.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Now it's 10 to 35.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: But again, you're still up by, you know, four scores, and and you're really able to to prove the dominance of of that first half and then to come out in the third quarter and not allow any points, either on offense or defense for Carolina, South Carolina or Alabama.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: That's just that's not a good way to have one quarter to be dominant like that in the first two the first two quarters in the first half, and then you start off the second half slow and don't get any points on the offense side of the ball isn't what doesn't show that you know you can see where they took their foot off the gas.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You you do that against you know, LSU, you do that against Tennessee, you do that against some of these, you know, Georgia against some of these other teams that are a little bit better in in the SEC, they're they're gonna find a way to beat you.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: You can't start off the third quarter slow like that, and then able to really go in, get the ball, you know, early in the fourth quarter, get another touch, you know, you know, get another touchdown and be up, you know, and and or early in the fourth quarter, allow a touchdown.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: You know, that's you you you gotta play smarter than that.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: You can't allow nothing to happen one quarter, and then as soon as the the the fourth quarter starts, quickly, very quickly, you allow the opposing team to get a touchdown.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: You know, now momentum starts to to shift a little bit into their favor a little bit.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: You know, they think they can come back.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, at 740 mark left in the third, you know, you're or in the fourth, you're able to get another another touchdown to do it.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And then late in the fourth quarter, you know, you're able to get get another another touchdown.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: And at the end of this one, one of the South Carolina players punched a Alabama player and you know got a 15-yard penalty for it, but wasn't ejected, which watching that game and watching that last little bit of the game, for the player to punch another player and not immediately get ejected is unbelievable.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: In the NFL, you would have been ejected in the other game, any other team.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Why he wasn't that that is that is just something that I don't get.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And then Baylor in Colorado played.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously Colorado knew that was going to be another tough game.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Baylor's is is a good team in in the Big 12, and they lost by 20 and 10, you know, by double digits 10 again, and you you can't you can't do that.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: You know, you you you able to get a field goal, you know, late in the first quarter and and really show and and it was a very good back and forth game on both sides of the ball, you know, offense, defense, you know, they were they both teams were were doing good to really stop each other.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: And then unfortunately, you know, you know, in the early in the second quarter, you know, Colorado allows the field goal, you know, again they allow another touchdown, now you're you're down, you know, and then the second quarter you you give up a field goal.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Now you're already down 13 to 3.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: You know, Colorado to get a field goal, okay.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: You cut it in half again, get 13 to 6.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: And then in the fourth quarter, to be able to tie it up, you know, and obviously nothing happened in the in the third quarter between these two teams, just like in Alabama, but then Colorado was able to get a drive going pretty early in the fourth quarter, get get that touchdown and get that score back to tied.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, from then on, you know, the the wheels just seemed seemed to fall off.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: You know, another touchdown for Baylor, and then in quick succession, you know, another field goal, and and just they they did not play.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: They did not play well.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Juju Lewis did get benched in this game.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: He is not going to start next week.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Week five against Texas Tech.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Week five for college football starts today.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So we have Western Kentucky, New Mexico State on Thursday night.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Alabama, Mississippi State, another one of those trap games, I believe, for Alabama.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Here you are playing another team that's at the bottom of the SEC.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: You came off a huge big win in North Carolina.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And so against South Carolina, now you really got to be able to show your dominance and really be in there.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: You know, Mississippi State, you know, they're ranked 16th in the country.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: So not necessarily a game to to really take lightly.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: They are ranked, you are ranked higher, but you know, Alabama really needs to play smart and be ready to go and make sure that they're they're focused and ready for this game, because if you don't you take this team lightly, they they will find a way to beat you.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech and Colorado.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Homecoming for Colorado, just I think another another tough game for for the Buffs.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: You know, we have another quarterback starting with Wilson.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And and let's see with Isaac Wilson, let's see how he does.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Maybe he has a little bit more command of the the offense and will do better and can read better the defense, and and we'll we'll see if this puts a fire under Lewis to play better and to practice better, and maybe he can get back into that starting position.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Week three of the NFL is over.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And well, like I've said every other podcast since the start of the last two ones, especially in week two, week three, and even before the season started, week to week in the NFL.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: You know, we we thought we saw a dominant team play on a on a Thursday night, a team that probably should have won the Green Bay Packers get blown out at home against the Atlanta Falcons, a team that just typically not gonna do anything this year.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: They just don't have the players, they don't have the offense, they don't and and they were able to blow out the Packers.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Broncos had to come back again in the second half and and beat the the Rams.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people thought the Rams were just gonna run away with this gaming at the first half.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: It looked like the way, and in the first half, it was 16-0.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And and the Broncos just couldn't get anything going and struggled and struggled and struggled.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the the the Rams were able to march up and down the field and get to, you know, get get get scores to where, you know, they're already up, you know, set, you know, they're already down 14, you know, 7-0.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: But you know, especially when, you know, it's four four minutes and fifty-five seconds left in the first quarter, they you know, the Rams were finally able to score up.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: But again, it started out as a really good defensive battle, and and the bubb and the Broncos were able to to kind of get some stops, but not necessarily allow them to really get a drive going and until that drive against and then you know, to get a field goal go up ten to go up ten nothing in the second quarter fairly early.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Again, Broncos just couldn't get any scores.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: They missed a field goal, and you know, they just weren't able to get into the red zone, get a good flow going, and and get and get get that ball going.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: You know, and then you know, again, late in the second the second quarter, you know, you're down 13 13 nothing.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And yeah, okay, great.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: You hold the ramps to another field goal late in the third quar in the second quarter with three seconds left.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Again, you hold them to a field goal, but you're down 16-0.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: And it's it's the same MO from last year.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: It's the same thing for the Broncos from last year.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Start out slow in the first half, and then all of a sudden wake up in the second half and and you're able to come back and and get you know get get that, you know, get that that first score and and really, really show, okay, you know, we can do this.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: But, you know, pass a touchdown to pass to Pat Bryant, you know, with seven minutes, 44 seconds left in the in the third quarter.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: You know, you come out the first drive, you go three and out, you know, you you can hear the Boo Birds in in Denver.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: You know, they're they expect you know a lot more.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: This is a team that is expected to be in the Super Bowl and expected to win the Super Bowl and win the division, and you're in third place in the division.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: You know, you we obviously know where the Chiefs are in the division at 3-0, and we know the the Raiders somehow are three and oh in the division, and and the Chargers are 0-3, which is unreal right now in in this division.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: We we thought the bron the the Raiders would be 0-3, and you know, we we thought it would be a three-horse race for for for the AFC West with the Broncos and Chiefs and and and Chargers and the Chargers are are are doing the worst out of all of them so far.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: You know, go for the two-point conversion, get it.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Now you're only down by eight.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: And to be able to get, you know, get get things going late in the second quarter in the third quarter in the second half, get another touchdown, tie it up 16-16, go for another two.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Now you're now you're starting to put some put some pressure onto onto the Rams, and obviously, you know, who knows where the Rams were in that second half.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: You know, the Rams in the fourth quarter, about a little little more than midway, you know, able to go up, you know, 19 to 16, you know, and then to be able to get an interception and return it for a touchdown and go up 23-16.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: You know, again, there's the defense stepping up, being ready to go, you know, able to stop and and create a turnover and get points out of it, not you know, giving it to the offense to where, you know, they might not be able to get you know points out of that turnover.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: They they did it themselves.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, you you unfortunately like, you know, again, late in the fourth quarter, you allow them to go up again.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Now it's 26-23.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: You're only down by three.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: You know, and then this is when a lot of things went went haywire and went crazy.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: There was a pass interference on the defense that they intercepted and and pretty much should have ended the game, but it was a defensive pass interference.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: People all over the internet are blasting, you know, the refs for that was a bad call, you know, you know, it was, you know, the Broncos paid you up, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, first off, we we don't need to do that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: We're not we're not the Chiefs.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: We, you know, if if you look at the play at the top of the route, the defender is impeding Bryant to be able to make a play on the ball.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, it probably should have been a legal contact, maybe not defensive PI, but it still should have been an automatic first down with five yards, and and and you know, who knows what would happen.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: But, you know, the Broncos were able to able to score, and then with, you know, 47, you know, 47 seconds left, you know, the the Rams were able to drive down the field, potentially get a a game-winning touchdown, Tunga Flowa intercepted it again, end of the game.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: You know, again, all these points scored in the in, you know, 30 points scored in in the in the second half again.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's the same story from last year.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: You these these close games, the Broncos need to be able to find a way to start off faster in the first half.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: You know, Davis Webb needs to be a little more confident in the play calling and and and really be uh, you know, I don't know, is he not prepared?
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Is it just you know fast?
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Is it just is he not seeing the game well?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I I totally would go up and Davis could just go up in the box and call one game from up there and and get a different perspective of the game and see what it's like to be able to see it up high where you can see the entire field, you can see you know the defense had a better look.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yes, I understand you want to talk to the players, you want to be able to be right there, see what's going on, get that that sideline view, but you're you're you're struggling somewhere in calling these plays and getting them in on time or or whatever it is, go up in the box for one game, see what it's like up there, and then if it if you do better and you can play better and get a faster start in the first half, stay up there.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe second half come down, but but you you just need to you need to be able to stay and and be there and and do that ready to go.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And and you know, you you you're playing the 49ers, which is another tough team in the NFC West.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: You you know, you're on the road for the for the second time this season.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: You know, two home games in a row, now you're on the road twice, both in California, one in San Francisco, one in LA.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: So it'll be interesting to see if the Broncos do come back after the game in San Francisco, or are they gonna stay in California, practice somewhere, and and be ready to go against the the LA Chargers for their second game of you know, of the of the of your your you know, of the AFC West.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: You know, you're playing your second division opponent, you know, five weeks in, six weeks in, and and again, these first six games for the Broncos are are uber uber tough, but once you get past that and come back from your bye, it's as a lot of people said, it's easy ceiling, but that that's one of those things that is a double-edged sword between the Broncos, you know, for every every team, you know.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, you have an easy second half of the season, you know, it's you know, don't go into cruise control, you know, keep keep your foot on the gas and and beat beat these guys and be ready to go, you know, and and and what not play a plus quick little press conference here from Sean Payton after they beat the LA Rams.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Look at uh obviously a gutsy win.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: Really a tale of two halves.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: And you know, ton of respect for those guys.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: We'd be you know a good team tonight.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: And like I said, I I think the halves couldn't have been more different.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: So any questions.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: Sean, what obviously crazy finish and up and down and all that, but what what do you what was the thing that changed the most for you often in the second half?
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: Well, I listen, I I keep getting back to this balance.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: You know, I I thought you there were some runs that we got to in the second half that helped us stay on schedule.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: You know, we had some big plays, there were some opportunistic penalties.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: It wasn't just one thing, at least shortly after the game, as my memory recalls it.
- 18:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I think the first half, obviously, we struggled.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Defensively, you know, I I remember going out at the halftime and Melissa was asking me, and I I thought, you know, shoot it with 13 points that we gave up a two-minute drive for a field goal, but I, you know, I thought defensively we just needed to help him with time of possession offensively and get some first downs.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: I think we we did a better job of that in the second half.
- 19:01SPEAKER_15: You're left off pick six.
- 19:03SPEAKER_15: Obviously, it was a big moment, has the one at the end there.
- 19:05SPEAKER_15: Just can you speak to his performance?
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: He obviously gets a game ball.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: You know, those are the the the interception for the touchdown was, you know, the play, the play of the game, right?
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: Just what that does for you and the play at the very end.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: You know, he's been such a consistent performer for us and leader.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: I love him.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: I love coaching him.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: And I went to give him the game ball in the locker room, and I kind of felt that he already had the the two priors, so it was more symbolic, but no, I was I was happy.
- 19:42SPEAKER_06: You know, the uh Sean, the tail of two halves seems to be oh quite a bit.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, more than just that, though.
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: I I I don't disagree, but there's a there's a lot that goes into that, and we gotta get that correct.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Second half a good part.
- 20:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I listen, I think there were some real big plays.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: You know, and and I think that some plays that he extended even, and then we got down in the red zone, we got a penalty, I think it may be two penalties, and then you know, we ended up sneaking it in from the half-yard line.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: But there were so many different chapters to that game.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: It's hard to just after you're finished, you know, each series.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: I was proud of how we played defensively, and then especially in the second half.
- 20:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, that's a a tough, a tough group.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: They they do a great job with their run game and their run action.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: You know, they're explosive.
- 20:45SPEAKER_05: And you know, it turned out being you know a real back and forth game.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: And you know, with finish.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: I don't know, 12-yard line, then a penalty, maybe full start or something, 17-yard line, but you know, that that's a real good football team.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: You know.
- 21:05SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 21:08SPEAKER_10: You're 16 and 3 on Sunday night football.
- 21:10SPEAKER_10: It's historical.
- 21:11SPEAKER_10: What makes you so good in these sort of games?
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: Well, listen, it would be the teens and the players, they all kind of run together the games.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: I I I remember the first, I think the first Sunday night game that was ever flexed was in 06.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: And I think we had to go to Dallas.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: But look, it it's the good teams.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: Here's the here's the thing.
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: You ready?
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: If your teams aren't really good, you're probably not on Sunday night.
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: So if you have good teams, you're probably getting those games.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: And we got one of them this year.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: And so yeah, I think that has a lot to do with it.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: When you talked to Melissa at halftime, you said we need balance, we need to run the ball, then the first drive out, three and out.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Did you have a mandate to Davis when you guys got the ball back the second time?
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: No, I haven't had we haven't had any mandates.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: It's it's too difficult to do that and yet there's I think look I just started looking over it and I wonder you're like Yeah, I think this when things aren't going well and you're trying to you know you're always open you know for suggestions, you know, and and so just try to be like all right, next series, here are the things and and we got to some runs that I think put us on schedule and and took some of the pressure off the QB and and I think that's part of it, you know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: We've talked a lot about under center football, and I think that's important as well.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: And so the second half was was much better.
- 22:46SPEAKER_05: And we'll look at the tape, I'm sure, and we'll pull our hair out with some stuff, and then we'll we'll be excited about some things too.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: And you know, we had a young new returner out there tonight for the first time.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: I thought that that penalty when they had to re-kick it, that was like a you know, ended up being, you know, like a 20-yard penalty.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: There was I remember like asking the officials where's the ball gonna be, and they said the 23-yard line.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: That didn't feel like a good place to be after a penalty, right?
- 23:17SPEAKER_05: Considering the the new kickoff rule and you know.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: And so fortunately, you know, we got a break there with a short punt.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: And but it's it's always exciting to see guys like that, you know, that get their first chance and hopefully we can get Marvin back here soon.
- 23:35SPEAKER_05: They get, yeah, and then Rob too.
- 23:38SPEAKER_05: Is it the at the family feud?
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: And I asked Greg to explain it to me, and then about a minute in I said, I'm just gonna say they're close.
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, it was just anyway, yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, he can be not that good for a quarter or two or three.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: What about him allows him to be his best when?
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: That's the$16 million question, honestly.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: And and I think that we're we're trying to sort through this first quarter.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: Okay, meaning he's he's obviously the moments aren't too big, and he he moves and escapes and makes plays, and we're it but it leads us to like that first part of the of the the the jigsaw, which is man, we have to find a way uh to play better earlier.
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: Now we've had a couple halves that have been real low numbering halves, like you know, week one and then this week, and we we just have to because I think it's I think it's more difficult to play defense if you look at time of possession.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: And so that area needs to get better, and and so all of us you know, I I always think that that starts with me or it starts with a group of us before it ever gets to Bo.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: And that was one of our big points of emphasis in coming into this game was just you know, we knew kind of the type of offense they had, and you know, we felt starting that was gonna be important for us, and yet it didn't happen.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm I'm pleased with how we responded, but you asked a great question.
- 25:24SPEAKER_05: And we can't like that'll it'll cost us in bigger games.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: I I just believe that against you know teams that are playing better later in the season.
- 25:36SPEAKER_05: And and I'm not I'm talking about ourselves, the ring, you know, whoever it is, it'll it'll be something that we'll be frustrated about later if if we can't clean it up.
- 25:47SPEAKER_14: I think hey Sean, uh when you think about scoring early in the in the third quarter and then going for two, what was your mindset at that point?
- 25:57SPEAKER_14: And then you did it again when you scored again.
- 25:59SPEAKER_05: So I think I've said this before.
- 26:01SPEAKER_05: I'm pretty conservative going for two.
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: And if it's third quarter, I would always say, is the score a low scoring game?
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: And I think the answer to that question was it was yes.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: It was 16 to 6.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Had that score been anything like 23, uh, I would have just kicked it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: So I usually don't look at that chart until the fourth quarter.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: I'll look at it in the third quarter if those numbers on that scoreboard are like they were, you know, lower scoring.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: I've just seen a lot of times where you don't make the two-point play, and then like four series later, you're like, why didn't we kick that P18?
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: But it's 16 to 6, you know, making it 16 to 8.
- 26:48SPEAKER_05: And then I've said this before, hopefully we every game we have two-point plays we love.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: We had about four tonight that we absolutely love.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: So it's easier if if you feel like you may know what you're getting and you love it, but I think the score had everything to do with that.
- 27:07SPEAKER_05: Us looking at that conversion chart.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: Normally it would be the fourth quarter.
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: Instincts, yeah, and I think if it was 24 whatever, and that I would have probably just kicked it and just said, hey, that's the way the game's going.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: But man, points were at a premium if if you just went through that first tap that we just finished discussing.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: And so I think that had a lot to do with it.
- 27:33SPEAKER_05: How much time was was that was it like middle of the third quarter, give or take?
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a lot of it had to do with the score.
- 27:43SPEAKER_05: And I think I've said that before.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: Like if a game is is trending or the points are coming, then I I may just kick the PAT, but I felt the way that school read, and my gut also felt like, hey, we're pretty confident in what we had relative to the plays, but I think that it had a lot to do with the score and then your instincts.
- 28:07SPEAKER_12: Coach, you've had so many games like this over the past couple of years.
- 28:11SPEAKER_12: Are you comfortable with this being the identity of the team?
- 28:15SPEAKER_12: And what do you find the most remarkable?
- 28:18SPEAKER_12: I'm comfortable.
- 28:19SPEAKER_12: Well, I I it's back to Mike's question.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm comfortable with the grit of a team that can play well in the fourth quarter.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: I'm uncomfortable with how we've played at the start of games, if that's a fair answer.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, I'm I'm comfortable with like this is a team that can because our our our game is you're gonna be in tight games, but as the head coach, you can't possibly be comfortable with the way the first half unfolded.
- 28:50SPEAKER_13: Do you sleep well after a game like tonight, or do you stay up all night?
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: I my grandson's in town for the first time, so I'll sleep pretty good.
- 29:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean your mind races, you know, it's it's never there's relief, but there's never, you know, that that perfect game.
- 29:12SPEAKER_05: There's just a lot that I think we can be better at.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: And I think that that's our job is to find that, you know, that we're not there, you know, and and I'm excited about the win, but man, it's a tough first half.
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: And so that that has to get better.
- 29:32SPEAKER_07: You mentioned Kobe, your young returner.
- 29:34SPEAKER_07: I know he was adventurous.
- 29:36SPEAKER_07: What did you think of his game and his 28-yard return did help set up the first season?
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: Listen, you know, you never know on that first moment.
- 29:44SPEAKER_05: You you can see do the preseason games, but it it was the the one return was a spark force, the punt return.
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: And you know, I I thought you guys have saw him in the preseason.
- 29:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, that you could see and feel the juice on the sidelines with the kick returns.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: And I think it was a good first night.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: If if if I'm him, you know, he'll probably sleep better than me.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: So y y you can tell where he sounds believe they were able to win it, but in and and in in in the long run, you you can really see he's frustrated with another slow start, having to come back in the fourth quarter, score all these points, and especially in the second half, you know, third quarter, fourth quarter, and and and squeak out a another win.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: I I think it's something that he isn't super happy with.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: He he needs to to to I think he wants to have a better game.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: You know, especially start out better, but you know, it's it's early and you know, every team struggles, every team has a has a good week and a bad week, and and especially when you're when you're playing a team that's projected to win the Super Bowl and they're projected to be the team out of the NFC to to beat, and you're able to beat them and find a way to do it, especially in in this early part of the season, to where you know this game before the Broncos could either be a helpful comeback win or it could be detrimental to the team, depending on how how they play the rest of the year, especially after coming off their bi-weekend in that second half, that last little bit of the season when you're you know you have a much, much easier schedule.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Play a quick little press conference here with Bo Nicks on his response of coming back and winning against the Rams.
- 31:40SPEAKER_15: Bo to your left, what are you feeling as you go back in the huddle down three, I think three minutes left, something like that.
- 31:47SPEAKER_15: What are you feeling in that moment as you go on that drive?
- 31:50SPEAKER_15: And then kind of on the other side as you're on the sideline watching that final Rams drive?
- 31:55SPEAKER_08: Well, the you know, in the huddle, I feel a lot of belief.
- 31:57SPEAKER_08: Know that we've been there before and we have what it takes to go down and against a really good defense and score points.
- 32:03SPEAKER_08: And I felt like we did it, we got down there quickly, and then it felt like the drive took forever to to end.
- 32:08SPEAKER_08: But, you know, it's one of those tough situations.
- 32:10SPEAKER_08: You're you get to field goal range, and so you know you're there.
- 32:13SPEAKER_08: You don't want to do anything dangerous with the football, but at the same time, you would like to score a touchdown.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: So, you know, we methodically got it, you know, down there to the inch line with a couple penalties, and we punched it in with just enough time left.
- 32:26SPEAKER_08: And then I always just I mean, there's nothing you can do on the sideline.
- 32:30SPEAKER_08: It's always, you know, nervous, but we got the best defense to go out there and and and stop them.
- 32:35SPEAKER_08: So if if our defense aren't isn't gonna do it, then, you know, nobody else will.
- 32:40SPEAKER_08: But it's just a a good team win, a good, you know, team finish, and that's just kind of feels like our our DNA.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: When you don't play your best or even close to your best, when I'm talking about you individually, for a quarter or two, or not tonight, but maybe three, what allows you to believe that you're gonna find your game and find a way to win?
- 33:04SPEAKER_08: Well, I'm never gonna play, you know, perfect in a game and may have a couple plays that I won't back, and maybe to you it doesn't look like the best, but maybe to me it's the best play in that situation, you know, based off what the defense gave us.
- 33:16SPEAKER_08: So, you know, the the play and the outcome and I think what Chelsea doesn't always tell the story, but you know, I I, you know, wasn't displeased today with how I played.
- 33:25SPEAKER_08: We had a few third downs that didn't go our way early and a couple that got us off the field quick.
- 33:30SPEAKER_08: Felt like in the first half we just didn't have the football for a long time.
- 33:33SPEAKER_08: But second half we had a great eight-point drive.
- 33:35SPEAKER_08: Um, I guess the second drive of the third quarter, and then another one.
- 33:38SPEAKER_08: So we were back in the game really quick.
- 33:40SPEAKER_08: Just shows us what we're capable of, and you know, we can score quickly, and you know, we scored 30 points in the second half.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I think there's always room to improve, but I didn't think it was disgusting, that's for sure.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Where's the resolve?
- 33:58SPEAKER_08: Well, I think we've just been there and done that, and yeah, we got down in a 16-point deficit in a hole there, but you know, we were we knew it was just a two-possession game with a couple of two-point conversions that we were able to convert on.
- 34:12SPEAKER_08: So that was obviously huge.
- 34:14SPEAKER_08: But I just think overall it's you know, may not look pretty, may not play a great second half in the future.
- 34:20SPEAKER_08: But, you know, that's why you you play good, uh complete four-quarter game, and you know, as a team, you put it all together, and that's just what we did.
- 34:27SPEAKER_08: We kept battling and kept battling and you know, got did what it took to get the win.
- 34:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but in a couple of these comeback wins last year, this year, uh, the two-point play has been big.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: Can you talk about just what that does for your mindset when you know Sean goes for two, first of all, and then you get him, and then your decision to make the throws that you did to well-covered receivers, but you put it right over a helmet of one guy and kind of threw it up knowing that Pat Bryant was in position for the other?
- 35:01SPEAKER_08: Well, we go for two.
- 35:03SPEAKER_08: Obviously, Sean's a big believer when when we need it, when we need to get back into a a game, or when we're down by eight, or in our case, sixteen.
- 35:10SPEAKER_08: So the, you know, quickest way I think, you know, statistics would probably tell you you're down by 16 in the second half.
- 35:16SPEAKER_08: Statistics would say the 50-50 shot to go for for two is gonna put you in a better spot than having to go on another lengthy drive and get points.
- 35:23SPEAKER_08: So we took both advantages of the two times we scored, went for two, and we liked our play with Jalen against the corner, and we've worked on that play a lot.
- 35:32SPEAKER_08: And you know, I just knew to throw it to a spot and he was gonna, you know, make it back there.
- 35:35SPEAKER_08: And usually when the defender has eyes away from you, it's an advantage offense because you just can't physically see the football.
- 35:42SPEAKER_08: But and then Pat Bryant just had great position.
- 35:44SPEAKER_08: And in two-point plays, you kind of have to, it's like a fourth down, you kind of have to just put the ball in play and you know, put make the best throw to where your guy can make a play, or you know, it's gonna be no good anyway, you know, if you run back there and scramble around.
- 35:58SPEAKER_08: So we just honestly two good ball plays and two guys making big plays.
- 36:04SPEAKER_09: Buster back, you can probably guess, but I'm gonna ask you about the defense and holding on all those field goals.
- 36:08SPEAKER_09: How big was that?
- 36:09SPEAKER_09: And then separately about Hafanga's pick six uh before the last one.
- 36:13SPEAKER_08: Well, the uh field goals were huge.
- 36:15SPEAKER_08: You know, they were able to have a couple drives and then, you know, they stalled and they were able to get three.
- 36:20SPEAKER_08: And obviously, it goes without saying the you know, them getting field goals instead of touchdowns is just really good, keeps you you know closer within the in reach.
- 36:28SPEAKER_08: And then, you know, Huff just performed really well.
- 36:31SPEAKER_08: He made a really good play on that blitz zero hot that he picked and and scored.
- 36:36SPEAKER_08: It was an underrated run after catch to go get in the end zone.
- 36:39SPEAKER_08: And then, you know, obviously to steal the game, it was just a big time player making big time plays in moments that we needed him.
- 36:46SPEAKER_08: And, you know, we we believe in our group, we believe in our guys, and we knew somebody was gonna do it, and tonight was huff.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Bo Sean said at halftime to Melissa Stark, they we've got to come out, we've got to get balanced, we got to run the ball better.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Then you guys have like a 60-second drive and three and out, but then that punt return sets up that next drive, and you have three runs in a row.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Did it feel like at that point maybe even Davis kind of found a little bit of rhythm and balance and steady, like talking to the offensive linemen in there, they were like they kind of felt like that might have been a little bit of a turning point where things started to steady.
- 37:16SPEAKER_08: I think maybe so, but I think, you know, the run game is really important for, you know, early-down success.
- 37:21SPEAKER_08: And, you know, like to start the game, start with a run and it's second and twelve.
- 37:25SPEAKER_08: You know, it's just it's it's it's really good when it works.
- 37:28SPEAKER_08: The run game, it keeps you balanced and it goes, but at the same time, it could put you behind the sticks if if you're not running for for good gains, you know, in first or second downs.
- 37:36SPEAKER_08: And so I don't know if we necessarily put Davis in the best position possible because like you said, we ran the ball better in the second half.
- 37:42SPEAKER_08: So I think he just continued to call an efficient game.
- 37:44SPEAKER_08: He stayed to the plan and he's done that two weeks in a row and he just continues to put us in a good situation in in the in the you know throughout the game to go and score and make plays, and tonight he did it again.
- 37:56SPEAKER_10: Well, to your left, you since you entered the league, you have the most game-winning drives, most fourth quarter comebacks in the entire NFL.
- 38:01SPEAKER_10: What about those situations just makes you more comfortable and makes you live up to them instead of going the other way?
- 38:07SPEAKER_08: Well, I think, you know, as a team, we keep ourselves in in the game at the end, and then I don't know, I j guess it's just a belief at the end of the game that, you know, we're gonna go out there and do it.
- 38:17SPEAKER_08: And, you know, usually we have good momentum and and we're, you know, it's carried us into the second half, or in that case, the end of the game.
- 38:24SPEAKER_08: And for us, we've once you do it once, you feel like you can do it again.
- 38:27SPEAKER_08: And that's just kind of where we are, and we have a great belief that fourth quarter, end of game, we're gonna have the ball last, and no matter what, we're gonna go down and hopefully do whatever it takes to win the game, or if not, tie the game and let our defense go out there and you know keep the game going.
- 38:41SPEAKER_08: But I think it's just an overall belief, a team belief, and when we get in the huddle, you know, you don't see any flinch in anybody's eyes.
- 38:50SPEAKER_14: Yeah, same question, kind of a different way.
- 38:52SPEAKER_14: Uh, and they've probably been asking you about this for the last couple of years, but all these comebacks, I mean, do you do you feel like you just have to be down in a game before you take it to another gear?
- 39:04SPEAKER_08: Not really.
- 39:04SPEAKER_08: I think, you know, if you watch majority of the games on an NFL Sunday, they end at the end of the game in a one-possession game.
- 39:12SPEAKER_08: And so it usually is who's got the ball last or who has an opportunity to score good points.
- 39:17SPEAKER_08: And, you know, the the league's a lot about momentum and momentum swings.
- 39:21SPEAKER_08: And, you know, it's not obviously every game we've ever won hasn't been on a comeback.
- 39:26SPEAKER_08: So we're completely capable of winning by a couple scores.
- 39:30SPEAKER_08: But I think you also just got to remember you're playing a really good football team in in the Rams, and you know, we got a really good schedule, so it may come down to the last few seconds on a few, but I think the more important thing is is we're winning these games when it comes down to it and we're not losing.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: It'd be a lot worse if we were talking about, you know, being close, being close, being close, and not being over the hump.
- 39:50SPEAKER_08: But you know, I love sitting up here talking about, you know, game winner whenever whenever I can do it and talking about how we came back and won at the end.
- 39:57SPEAKER_08: That's always a good thing.
- 39:59SPEAKER_11: Bo, did you see anything in the first half that you thought would work in the second half?
- 40:03SPEAKER_11: And then how much input do you have in the locker room with Coach Payton and Coach Webb on those things that you're seeing?
- 40:09SPEAKER_08: Well, the I thought in the first half, early down, first and second down, drop back and and our passes or just our game plan, the the quick throws and all that stuff, I thought those were really good.
- 40:18SPEAKER_08: And and I knew we could get back to those.
- 40:20SPEAKER_08: It was kind of like the question earlier of just running the football to be balanced and having positive runs was just really important there in the second half.
- 40:27SPEAKER_08: And when I think when you're throwing the football, running the football, keeping them off balance, the defense doesn't quite know what you're doing and you're having success in both.
- 40:34SPEAKER_08: I think that's really important.
- 40:35SPEAKER_08: But overall, we got in the in in halftime, we got in the locker room and looked at the plan and we're like, there's still a lot of really good plays on the sheet and a lot that we can come back to.
- 40:43SPEAKER_08: And I think we just look at it, there was probably two or three third downs that were really close that could have, you know, bounced our way that extends drives, and then next thing you know, you know, we're rolling.
- 40:53SPEAKER_08: But I think the more the emphasis right now is first and second down success and sort of not getting to third downs and having some chunk plays on those first and second downs and get our offense going.
- 41:02SPEAKER_08: And once we get the first down, you once we get to first first down, usually we got an explosive offense.
- 41:07SPEAKER_08: But I think that is a point of emphasis for us right now.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: You know, and again, you you you can almost tell by his voice and his frustration of you know having having a bad first first half and then having to come back and and and win that win that game and and able to, you know, again, he he knows the defense is able to help him out and and and get him in situations where they can get the ball back and and on a short field and and the special team is able to get a good power turn, especially on that on that first going three and out and then able to stop the ramps and then get that first drive, get that first touchdown, go for two, and then you know, Tonga Faloa able to intercept it and and go for for uh pick six.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: You know, really, really cool there.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: But also that last question there by Joshua Dover.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: Cool guy.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Probably one of the one of my good friends that I was able to learn how to do do this media stuff and even get into the the podcasting.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Like I did.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: And last night was game one of the Colorado Avalanche for the 2026-2027 season.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: And you know, get able to get a big win at home, eight to four.
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: You know, and and and that's that's crazy to to have, you know, eight eight goals scored in the in the beginning of the game in the beginning of the season like that, and and good win for the Aves to start off this season, obviously playing the team that you swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup finals last year.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Big big win for the Avs to come back and and to be able to do that.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: And Brock Nelson at the 633 mark in the in the first period able to get that that goal, you know, and then you know, allowing the the the Kings to tie it up, and then Kelly to be able to go back up to two to one late in the in the first period, and then get another quick goal by Nathan McKinnon, get his first with an assist by Makar, you know, early on, 23 seconds into the into the second period again, to be able to start like that and get a goal late in the in the in the first period, and then right after right after the second period starts, you get another quick goal go up and and really get that the momentum coming into your side.
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, you know, with a minute and twenty-eight seconds into the first into the th, you know, second period, you know, you now now you're now you're only ahead by a goal.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: You know, Nathan McKinnon get a second goal to go up, you know, four to two again.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: You you're you're able to really get there and really start to get that momentum swing.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: And then at the 1601 mark in the second period, you know, again, go up five to two and and and really, really go.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: You know, and then unfortunately late in the in the s in the third second period allow that that first you know, that that another goal now you're only ahead by two, but then able to get you know another late in the second period, you know, get another goal, go up three goals, and then really, really put on the pressure, try to hope you you can have the pressure and have the momentum going into the third period.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: But you know, allowing a goal midway through the third period, you know, to to be down to again, only be ahead by by by two goals.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: Lannis Gogg was able to get into the 1403 mark, go up, you know, four to seven, and then obviously, you know, get a get a goal you know pretty late in the in the first the the second the third period and and and go up eight to four and and and win that game.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: You know, again again able to get there and and and and for McKenzie Blackwood to you know allow 31 saves, only gay only gave up four goals, and then twenty-seven saves, you know, and and he's starting out good.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: And it's it's a good first win for the for the avalanche, but you know, this this is crazy that the Avs have already started and and we're not even we're just now in the beginning of October.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: And you know, obviously a hockey season started earlier this year, and they added on four m two more games, and we'll we'll see where the avalanche go.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: Let's hope that they still have that ability to be able to be the team to be in the a in the uh you know the the Western Conference team to to be in the Stanley Cup Finals, but you know, every year is different and and it's so hard to this game is is always so fast-paced and different, and every year one team plays better than the other, and and we'll see where the Aves go.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: So thank you for listening to Podcast 16 T-Bone Sports, one fan, all game, and as always, roll tide, go buffs, go broncos, go avs.
