- 0:00Salaam alaikum warahmatullah. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:03of after Maghrib. If you are, where I am in the
- 0:05UK, you're probably snowed under freezing but it's a little
- 0:09keeping well and safe wherever you are in the world and
- 0:11hopefully you guys are enjoying the World Cup as well, because
- 0:14of course, today, that's something we're going to be
- 0:16talking a lot. About, we are proudly.
- 0:19Representing supporting Morocco. Now that the UK that now, the
- 0:22England are out of the World Cup and we're backing our Muslim
- 0:25Brothers, to win the World Cup in sha Allah.
- 0:29But We go any further, it's time.
- 0:31Of course to introduce my co-host as always say that.
- 0:34I need other ways. Some I look insane.
- 0:43How are you? I'm all good.
- 0:45All good. How's your week?
- 0:47Been my week's been great. Hamdulillah managed to attend a
- 0:50few far to me and my jawless. Attend.
- 0:53Yes. And recite, and recycle Allah,
- 0:54Masha Allah. But I can say one thing that
- 0:57went against me was catching a cold, hundred grand.
- 1:03How have you been following the World Cup?
- 1:05I have until England basically got disqualified.
- 1:08Right. Yeah, but I've seen all the
- 1:10hype, that's not something now especially with the Morocco.
- 1:13Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now of course it's been exciting
- 1:16and there's so much to talk about and I know we don't want
- 1:19to make this kind of just exclusively a football episode,
- 1:22but I think it's important to talk about the wider
- 1:24conversation of the World Cup in this.
- 1:26So many conversations to have about representation of Muslims
- 1:30and Arabs and particular in the world cup.
- 1:32And all of the news that's come out of it, for example, in terms
- 1:35of Palestine, in terms of talking about God, in terms of
- 1:39culture and religion. I know we touched on it at the
- 1:40beginning of the World Cup. It's been exciting, isn't it?
- 1:44It has a high especially for Muslims.
- 1:46Yeah, nothing on a global level because for once I think Muslims
- 1:50are being looked in a positive way rather than blowing things
- 1:53up, for example. Yeah.
- 1:54If I can throw that in no pun intended, dog, finance and we
- 1:57talked about this because obviously it's ironic before the
- 2:00World Cup started, we talked about true Geordie the YouTubers
- 2:04who talked about how he made a bad joke.
- 2:08Of Muslims and stereotyping Muslims and subhanallah, the way
- 2:12things have kind of turned for the better.
- 2:14So now in terms of the online community and obviously in real
- 2:17life as well, people are looking at Islam in a different light
- 2:21and people are supporting Morocco in the world cup and I
- 2:23think what they've done is symbolic because yes, okay
- 2:27they've achieved what they've achieved so far to reach the
- 2:29semi-finals on Merit, they've done really well.
- 2:32But also the outside of the game outside of the 90 minutes.
- 2:36They've represented Islam in an Incredible light laughter shout
- 2:40my boy's mother Ali Hakim is eh, I'm Robert Buffet.
- 2:44All these Moroccan players Marshall love.
- 2:46Call them your boys. Yeah, my boys, my boys.
- 2:50They know they're doing sujood. I think that that's something.
- 2:54I think we should be grateful for.
- 2:56Yeah. Seeing you know, people on the
- 2:57world stage, showing some worship to Allah subhana.
- 3:00Yeah. Thankfulness being grateful and
- 3:03it was beautiful. Also seeing their moms involved.
- 3:05Yes, you know, normally if they were if they were not Muslims,
- 3:08And say this will probably see them dancing with champagne.
- 3:10Yeah, but the fact they are Muslim, they wanted to search
- 3:13it. They said alhamdulillah and the
- 3:14mothers were there, would ya? And that's in others, a
- 3:17connection between a mother and Islam given their status in
- 3:20religion. Yeah, it's so nice as well
- 3:21because there's this relatability I think for guys
- 3:24like us and for others around the world because their mothers
- 3:28mashallah are majority of them are wearing hijab and Abaya and
- 3:35they look like ordinary mother's from our community.
- 3:38Because what Muslims are, which is what we are all.
- 3:40Yeah, and exactly. And, but it's nice like to see
- 3:43it on a mainstream stage and not just any mainstream stage.
- 3:46We're talking about the biggest platform of the world, the World
- 3:49Cup the most watched Tournament of the most watch sport in human
- 3:53history. Do you know what I mean?
- 3:54And and the fact that it's being held in a Muslim country and the
- 3:58semi-finalists of the World Cup are for the first time from an
- 4:02African and a Muslim country is you know, absolutely amazing.
- 4:06Absolutely amazing. Is it says unnie is nice that
- 4:09you mentioned a Muslim country? Yeah because one thing I like
- 4:12about cutter. Yeah.
- 4:13And this world cup was the fact where they quoted quranic ayahs
- 4:18other on the stadium, you know. Yes and Alleyways and it's so
- 4:22nice because even if your non-muslim, you can look up to
- 4:24these quotes and learn something from them.
- 4:26Yeah, yeah. So and it's a reminder to
- 4:28Muslims ourselves at the same time.
- 4:29And one thing I so very nice is that like I don't know if it was
- 4:33like, authorized by the Qatari government himself.
- 4:36Yeah, there was like, for example, we can Say preachers or
- 4:39Scholars all around the arena and stuff where people can ask
- 4:42questions about Islam. Hmm.
- 4:44And this is to be honest, this is the way it should be because
- 4:46when you know Islam and many people may see it as imposing or
- 4:50forcing religion or forcing your beliefs onto visitors to the
- 4:54country. But we know in Islam did the
- 4:57responsibility of being a host. When someone visits your home
- 5:01your house and Islam, you have to treat them with all the
- 5:03mahjongg a lot. All the hospitality is all the
- 5:07formalities and More. So when someone is visiting your
- 5:09country as a traveler, we know, of course, the rights of a
- 5:12traveler in Islam and result in local going and other places we
- 5:15see the rights of a traveler. But no, it's nice, Masha, Allah
- 5:18because there's so many, there's so many beautiful things I think
- 5:21would have come out of this house, or I'm, I saw a news
- 5:24piece about a Brazilian family, not mistaken who had reverted to
- 5:27Islam. And that's why a family yeah, in
- 5:30the washer. Yeah.
- 5:31And it was beautiful. They were standing with the
- 5:33sheriff and the sheriff was was doing an interview, and he was
- 5:37saying that, I introduced a slab to them at the family said, we
- 5:40knew this was for us. We came here in the way we were
- 5:42treated and the things we saw in the respect, that's very true.
- 5:46You know, the media somehow only showed, like, - sites to cover.
- 5:50Yeah. And I think that's in particular
- 5:52because it's a Muslim country. Yeah, well the beautiful that
- 5:55the fans knows who want to attend the World Cup so
- 5:57different story. Hmm.
- 5:59I mean just seeing clips from fans actually there on the
- 6:01ground. No, be it on their live streams
- 6:03over is they gave a completely different picture if I walk on
- 6:08Get the alcohol. Yeah, a lot of people made this
- 6:10whole fuss about alcohol. They didn't even know alcohol
- 6:13enjoyed that time. It's interesting.
- 6:15I've been watching a lot of logs and a lot of live streams of
- 6:18fans who are in Qatar right now and who are saying this is by
- 6:22far the best World Cup. I've attended or even seen not
- 6:25just in terms of quality of sport like the football is
- 6:27amazing. No one can tell but also in
- 6:30terms of the way they're being hosted, so locals are opening
- 6:33their doors up to visitors. You know, people have been fed
- 6:35on the street, Masha, Allah. And And to the point where a lot
- 6:39of people fans who are attending, for example, from the
- 6:41UK are saying that we want every World Cup to be held in Arab
- 6:45countries or Muslim countries because of not just the fact
- 6:47that they're there, their respect and hospitality is
- 6:50really good. But also the fact that the no
- 6:52alcohol Point has already more enjoyable.
- 6:55Yeah, there was a guy actually from the UK.
- 6:57Yeah, I saw this post on Instagram was being shared so he
- 7:00went with his wife and daughter. Yeah, for the World Cup.
- 7:03He said this is the first time I've been to a football match.
- 7:06Why didn't need to keep an eye on my daughter?
- 7:08For example, I didn't need to look behind on the shoulder to
- 7:11check out the new ones like messing with my wife.
- 7:13For example. So he felt peaceful and safe.
- 7:16Yeah. In a Muslim country because
- 7:18there's no alcohol. There's competition, there's
- 7:20respect. There's a job.
- 7:22And of course we know we have to be honest.
- 7:23Like, of course, every country will have its controversies, of
- 7:25course, every country will have things to work on and improve
- 7:29on. And we know of course the Arab
- 7:30world is as a lot of work to do. And there was one story that was
- 7:34very interesting by the way. Yeah, I'm guy.
- 7:36Forgot his phone in the hotel and the Ah, be okay.
- 7:39So he went to the stadium Watch the match came back as phone was
- 7:44still there. No way this one was still there.
- 7:47No way that goes to show. For example, how I think you can
- 7:52see Islam in a positive way. I'm not saying Muslims don't
- 7:55steal. I'm sure there is hair and their
- 7:58best because we sort of have this lower.
- 8:00We look up to You can feel safe in a country like in a sport
- 8:05generally over the last few decades, especially as the
- 8:09world's become more globalized and everything sport has become
- 8:12for many people, like a religion and that's something I want to
- 8:14talk about in a bit with you. Although below, not honestly,
- 8:17speaking, like it's become people travel the world to watch
- 8:21players, you know, let alone their teams, but all good travel
- 8:23across the world to watch, for example, Lionel Messi.
- 8:25Yeah, you know, I was listening to something earlier today,
- 8:28where a guy says, I've traveled the world to watch Lionel Messi
- 8:30and now Mankato, and this is the best experience.
- 8:32So I've had to watch him play now, when you, when you when we
- 8:36live in a world where sport is so crazy, and it's become so
- 8:40popular and everything alongside that people start to mix their
- 8:44societal Norms, drinking partying, swearing lad, culture,
- 8:48pop culture, all of that stuff with the sport.
- 8:51And now, for the first time, you've got an environment where
- 8:54that doesn't exist enjoying sport, you're enjoying support
- 8:57for the quality of the sport and and you're being hosted the way.
- 9:01Some has, you know, prepared. You did to host and so on.
- 9:04And sometimes I think like will love love the world cup to be in
- 9:06the UK. I'm truly loved as a fan and as
- 9:09a resident but at the same time, there is no chance that this
- 9:13country could ever host the World Cup.
- 9:15Like I was hosting the World Cup right now, you know, they've
- 9:18tailor-made this competition for, you know the whole country
- 9:22has been preparing for this since what like 12 13 years ago
- 9:25whenever it was announced. So the whole country's been
- 9:28preparing and imagine that the the huge boost is given to the
- 9:31local economy. To the the reputation of the
- 9:34country tourism for years to come, people will go back to
- 9:37other people saying, they love the city and darn like it's
- 9:41amazing. Martial, either that the sort of
- 9:43benefits that you can gain from it, you know, speaking, a bit
- 9:46about how I've mentioned earlier than media has only focused on
- 9:49the negatives. You know, something interesting.
- 9:51I read slide off track was regarding the World Cup.
- 9:55There's not enough room in hotel rooms for the amount of people
- 9:58visiting card that at the moment.
- 9:59Yeah. So I started as a country He
- 10:03also me. Yeah, container idea.
- 10:04They put in a lot of containers and also opening the arms up,
- 10:07not just that they've actually paid for hotel rooms and flies
- 10:10to neighboring countries. No.
- 10:12They slide them out and keep them there.
- 10:13When is their time to come? They fly by my problem.
- 10:16Yeah. Wow I wasn't - Leon it Global
- 10:19emissions. Yeah.
- 10:22Climate have to find something. You know of course of course I
- 10:25mean it's like in the grand scheme of things.
- 10:28Of course, the climate issues are some important, the big
- 10:30issue. Yeah but it's in The grand
- 10:33scheme of things. It's it's a miniscule impact.
- 10:36So you know, on the global climate and let's say the World
- 10:38Cup was in the US. Yes.
- 10:40Like the next one will be. Will they face the same, you
- 10:43know, with the media be focusing?
- 10:45What do you know what the next World Cup is in Canada, us and
- 10:47Mexico. Three countries are showing the
- 10:49next World Cup 2026, okay, okay. And spread across different
- 10:53cities in all three countries and a lot of people, I mean
- 10:58there's obviously not so much coverage about it now, but
- 11:00people talk about and now in preparation for the next one,
- 11:02People are talking about going to Vegas and casinos.
- 11:06People are talking about like I'm to, I was hearing a guy,
- 11:11make a crack, a joke about drug use in South America and Mexico
- 11:14and sold like. So there's a ready lacks some
- 11:17murmurs of things, which are not in line with the slam times the
- 11:21value, but obviously it would be an incredible experience.
- 11:24You know, I would love to go and show love for years from that
- 11:26can be there but it's you know, it's weird for the football in
- 11:32world. For the first time to have a
- 11:34World Cup in an Arab country or Muslim countries that have been
- 11:38done and it's never been done in the winter snow be done in a
- 11:40country like that. So it's a big deal but is it is
- 11:44I've got a question or comment. Yeah it might sound weird too
- 11:48many listeners. I'm not huge football fan.
- 11:50Okay? For me is like an object being
- 11:52kicked around on the grass. Yeah.
- 11:54That's how I see it. Yeah.
- 11:55Unless it's like an England game or a game which I'm heavily
- 11:58focused on. Yeah.
- 11:59That's apart from that, I don't feel any connection with
- 12:01football. You mentioned a bit earlier.
- 12:03Some people's a bit like religion was what's the whole
- 12:05fuss about for football and many parts of the world is tree?
- 12:08Like, religion in the UK football is a religion.
- 12:11I had family, visit the UK a few days ago and they noticed that
- 12:15football here is treated like a religion, okay?
- 12:17And for many people, it might be a lack of a higher purpose and
- 12:21ultimate purpose, such that they then identify themselves with an
- 12:25entity like a football club or with personalities.
- 12:28They can look up to like football players and it's not
- 12:31just football can be any sport. But at the end of the day
- 12:33football in its nature, as a very emotional sport, there's
- 12:37the intellectual side in the Tactical side.
- 12:39There's, you know, system that comes with the sport.
- 12:41It's very, it's a genius sport, the same time.
- 12:44There's emotion this heart, this sentiment.
- 12:46There's there's passion in football.
- 12:48Do you see what I mean? So, I think when people look at
- 12:50football as a whole, it brings them life, brings them Soul.
- 12:55So at a time like this, where you have the World Cup?
- 12:58Yeah, people will in ordinary circumstances.
- 13:02Like we said, go crazy. So, for example, in the UK when
- 13:07England lose a match, you know, this is previous well Garden
- 13:09about this world cup, but when England, you lose a match in the
- 13:12water in football, domestic abuse rates in the UK Ohio, I
- 13:17saw some Billboards will ya when England lose games.
- 13:21More women are being by their kind of have this common home.
- 13:25Yeah. There was a billboard saying
- 13:26he's coming home. So basically, I think what it
- 13:29meant is that he England lost the game.
- 13:31Yeah, it's left the pub. Up his on his truck, he's coming
- 13:34home. Yeah.
- 13:35God forbid, you know what happens next, but that's what I
- 13:37mean, some people take it really seriously and there's a fine
- 13:40line to be drawn and I this is a conversation.
- 13:42I wanted to had wanted to have like, we as Muslims.
- 13:46We understand that there is priorities for us here.
- 13:49So World Cup finals on, for example, and it's time for
- 13:52solar. Would you, do you know what I
- 13:54mean? It's a very tricky situation for
- 13:57a lot of us to be honest, you know, it's very hard for us to
- 14:00pause a match for 20 minutes and go and praying.
- 14:02Come back. And, you know what I mean?
- 14:04And I think for a lot of people, it's a test of our of our, like,
- 14:11our dedication to religion. Yeah.
- 14:13You know, like, do I spend more time listening to football staff
- 14:17podcasts, playing FIFA and all of that stuff or do I spend more
- 14:21time building my connection with the last ones?
- 14:23I'll, you know, I think is very valuable to the conversation,
- 14:26they bought that apartment. You know why?
- 14:29Because everyone can name the entire football team, hmm.
- 14:33Everyone can know who their wives are, who their kids are,
- 14:35what kind of mentioned are living in.
- 14:37They know everything about them but they can't name more than
- 14:39two persons. Yeah, they don't know more about
- 14:41the a debate on himself Frank sent.
- 14:43So I think it is a bit true where you say people actually
- 14:46take it to be solved like religion and that's a shame
- 14:49because I think we can't find balance and it.
- 14:52Yeah 100 percent. I mean you think about it like
- 14:55you said I had example can relate to anything I can be
- 14:59right. Can relate anything, you know,
- 15:00you could talk about music for example, people know the lyrics
- 15:03of a rap song before they know that the the verses of the
- 15:05Quran, you know, you can apply it to many things and I think
- 15:09it's important for us to think about the relationship we have
- 15:11with with with the Dunya. Yeah.
- 15:14And the relationship we have with the last time to either and
- 15:16whether we prioritize one over the other, so it's really easy
- 15:19for us. When we're watching football to
- 15:21get carried away. And I'll be honest, I think we
- 15:23should enjoy sport. I think we should enjoy
- 15:25football. I think we should make the most
- 15:26of it. It's time to bring people
- 15:28together, you could enjoy. It in a fun and Halal the way.
- 15:31You know it's not / tunity to celebrate diversity and
- 15:33opportunity to celebrate athleticism.
- 15:36All of these things which are highly highly encouraged in
- 15:38Islam. But at the same time, it's
- 15:40important for us to realize that it's not the be-all and end-all
- 15:43like football and the World Cup. And so on, it's not the reason
- 15:48that we, we do the things we do to, you know, what I mean.
- 15:51So, we can enjoy it but, you know, there's got to be a
- 15:54balance. I want to imagine this.
- 15:55Yeah, part of me. Friday packed.
- 15:59Yeah, Saturday England playing, they've been playing offense.
- 16:03You really you can tell people's priorities.
- 16:06But yeah. So that was, that was an
- 16:09observation. I made it happens happen.
- 16:11When was it? It's always the same.
- 16:13I'm, I remember a few years ago. I think it was If I'm not
- 16:17mistaken, it was the Champions such a big Champions League game
- 16:22and it was Muharram night, probably into weddings.
- 16:26Yeah, people are watching football our wedding.
- 16:28I'm not gonna lie. I'm not gonna lie if my wedding
- 16:32if my wedding day fellow World Cup final, I'm watching that
- 16:35game of my wife a lot straight. I'm just walking down the aisle
- 16:40with the phone in the hand. Watch the stream is got the
- 16:44done, but to be honest, love you.
- 16:45Think about football. Football is a big deal.
- 16:48If you're watching it your wedding, your foot was one
- 16:50thing. But what about mosques, okay?
- 16:52Because I want to have this conversation as well.
- 16:53There's a lot of sensors in our community which have been
- 16:55streaming the football matches recently.
- 16:58Yeah, so for example, we know, of course, the last few nights
- 17:01there's been as it the second original thought the meal, which
- 17:04we've been commemorating the yes.
- 17:05And of course at the same time England was playing over the
- 17:07weekend, for example. Now, for some people it's a very
- 17:10awkward position for some communities.
- 17:12They don't commemorate the second iteration to solve them
- 17:14in. So, for those communities, they
- 17:17They'll be streaming the games even in the side, the center.
- 17:20Hmm. Or even just not attending my
- 17:22jealous to watch the games. Like I said, hmm.
- 17:24I mean, if they're not commemorating makes sense.
- 17:27I know some people find some narrations weaker than others.
- 17:30Yeah. Understandable, this is nice as
- 17:32a community. Let's, let's imagine is not
- 17:34familiar. Yeah.
- 17:35It's nice. As a community, allowing
- 17:36everyone to get together to enjoy the game.
- 17:38I think is nice, is it disrespectful?
- 17:40Because I had an argument a couple of days ago where I guy
- 17:42said that this is a mosque. Firstly, I don't know if we can
- 17:46say that because if we Don't a lot of our centers are not
- 17:48actually mosques their mom biogas or they're saying he has
- 17:51or whatever. But someone saying that this is
- 17:53a place of worship, you shouldn't be showing the
- 17:55football games disrespectful. That's a tricky one.
- 17:59Hmm. And I don't think I I don't
- 18:02think I can touch on it, to be honest, really.
- 18:04I've got no knowledge on, you know, if one should do.
- 18:08So one shouldn't have no idea. Fair enough, I expect no idea.
- 18:10I respect that, I mean, at the end of the day, it's an
- 18:13important conversation to have. Because if your ultimate aim is
- 18:16to bring Believers together to, you know, for example, in many
- 18:19senses, you will have like social nights, you'll have
- 18:22poetry workshops or you have like, art workshops or whatever,
- 18:26you know what I mean? And Doing something recreational
- 18:29to bring people together. We start table.
- 18:30Tennis table, tennis sleepovers. Yeah, pretty much.
- 18:33It's a station sleepovers, but all of that stuff.
- 18:36Why is it any different? When you're watching a football
- 18:37game, you're bringing the youth together, you're bringing
- 18:39parents and children together. Like if you know, if I had a son
- 18:42who's 15 years old, I would rather take him to the mosque to
- 18:46watch games with his friends and our community, then to let him
- 18:50go out and watch it with his mate somewhere where I don't
- 18:52know. Yeah, no that's a valid point
- 18:54it's a place you can trust. Yeah.
- 18:58You know, leaving your swearing, no alcohol, none of that.
- 19:01It's a good environment that it's bringing the youth
- 19:04together. It shouldn't be something I
- 19:06think demonized. Okay, I got a question for you,
- 19:09okay, very shortly, Morocco's going to be playing.
- 19:12Yeah, let's go back to Morocco - yeah?
- 19:15Who's supporting France America, bro?
- 19:17Come on. It's not know why?
- 19:19I don't know why. All right, I have like five
- 19:21reasons. I'll just try and quickly
- 19:23summarize them. Firstly, France, be us some more
- 19:25support for fair enough. Secondly, I don't want to get
- 19:27the They won the lost, lost woke up 30, and probably, most
- 19:30importantly, I want more Awkward to win.
- 19:32Not, why is that? That's why I don't know why.
- 19:33Because The Underdogs, mmm, not because they played good
- 19:38football, but also because on top of that day, the first
- 19:41Muslim and an Arab country, and African country to reach the
- 19:45semi-finals of the World Cup. Yeah.
- 19:47Yeah, you know, and they've deserved to get to where they
- 19:49belong, the making history in sha, Allah, ya and Charles are
- 19:51they making sure they've really made history will continue to do
- 19:53it and they've been fighting like Warriors.
- 19:55Those players they've been playing really Well there's
- 19:58tactically, they're really good. They're fantastic team.
- 20:01Honestly speaking. I don't think they'll win.
- 20:02I'm not gonna lie. I think they'll get battered by
- 20:04from. You never know.
- 20:06Allah is with the Masala but they they it's, you know, for
- 20:09Portugal's going on. Yeah.
- 20:11Yeah. Yeah Spain more could be
- 20:13explained as well. Crazy shock this walk-ups being
- 20:16full of shocks. Yes it has.
- 20:18Although I'm not a die-hard football fan.
- 20:20Yeah I do love sort of look at the news here and there.
- 20:23Who are you spoiling our spawn England?
- 20:25Okay, well no father, no one but In this game that's coming up.
- 20:28Now, I'm small, Morocco inshallah, you know, the more
- 20:31can coach, he made a statement. He said, he said, we, we are
- 20:40representing Moroccans and Africans.
- 20:43Please support us and help us make history.
- 20:46And his statement was twisted to say.
- 20:49We are only representing Arabs, Arabs, not even Arabs.
- 20:53It was Moroccans and Africans. Do you know what I mean?
- 20:57So people. People completely misconstrued,
- 20:59what he was saying, to make it sound like we don't want
- 21:01anything to do with you guys. We are only for our Moroccans
- 21:04for out for our Nationals, if you know what I mean.
- 21:07You know, I have no doubt that this was probably done on
- 21:09purpose and they probably want to move, you know, Muslims out
- 21:12the Limelight and making Focus just on Morocco as the country
- 21:15itself and Africa is a continent itself, but I think if we look
- 21:19realistically Morocco is more than just a countries actually I
- 21:22think representing Islam on the global stage.
- 21:25Why? Yeah we mentioned they don't
- 21:26shoot. Mentioned, for example them, you
- 21:29know, doing gestures thanking Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala but
- 21:32something they did which was very interesting, they give a
- 21:36voice to the voiceless. Mmm Palestine.
- 21:39Mmm, what was your thoughts on that?
- 21:41There's been a lot of, there's been a lot of propel because
- 21:43when they did that, the entire Muslim world was like, you guys,
- 21:48we love you. Yeah.
- 21:49There's been a lot of pro-palestinian coverage across
- 21:52the world cup and a lot of for example, journalists from other
- 21:55countries at the occupied. State of Palestine who have come
- 22:00to the World Cup and who doing interviews and people would
- 22:04refuse to speak to them. You have seen those, you know,
- 22:06and it's not just that it's also, for example, English
- 22:10support I've seen so many videos of English fans, who'll say,
- 22:13free Palestine in interviews, or who, for example, who will come
- 22:17to the world cup with one impression and and speak to
- 22:19locals, and speak to Palestinians and learn a lot
- 22:21about their, their plight. And it's interesting to know
- 22:24that, you know, we talked about sport, not having to be a Jeep.
- 22:27School thing will know having to be something, which causes
- 22:32Strife between people, but sport can bring people together and it
- 22:35can become a geopolitical thing for the better.
- 22:37If it's used in that, you know, in that respect.
- 22:40So for example, people can learn about different cultures, people
- 22:42can learn about different religions they can learn about
- 22:45the the trauma that people around the world are going
- 22:48through and all it takes is that willingness to open your heart
- 22:53and your mind up to visit another country to meet new
- 22:55people to engage in your conversations.
- 22:57And I have to give credit because there's been a so many
- 22:59English fans. British English fans who have
- 23:02gone over to clutter and not just English all around the
- 23:04world and have learned about the, the new religions the
- 23:07cultures, the plight of the Palestinian people as well.
- 23:11And I think Morocco get into semi-finals weather or whether
- 23:14not, they win tonight in Shallow, they do.
- 23:17But the idea being is that their presence on this world stage at
- 23:22this level that they've got to itself is a huge benefit, you
- 23:27know, They've done a lot of good and I don't think they'll
- 23:30realize, well, the, the do more good to I think the global
- 23:34Muslim world. Yeah.
- 23:35Because we saw we are now being seen in a positive light.
- 23:39The fact that reached at this stage in the World Cup you know
- 23:42has put Aslam or Muslims on the world map.
- 23:45Yeah. Because I mentioned earlier at
- 23:47the very beginning of this conversation where for the first
- 23:50time when I'm blowing ourselves up.
- 23:52Yes. And part of the fun and I think
- 23:54if the media stop suppressing, how Beautiful Islam, as a
- 23:58religion other than we will even be having this discussion right
- 24:02now. Correct fact, we're discussing
- 24:04this. There is something going on, we
- 24:06Western media, whatever it is. I just want to give a shout out
- 24:09to a friend of ours called hustling.
- 24:10I live from New York who is meant to actually be on the
- 24:13podcast because unfortunately things didn't work out and the
- 24:16snowing in London and it didn't work out, but he's an actor and
- 24:18he's a film producer and he's Masha, Allah.
- 24:20He's done a lot of work. He's won in so many film
- 24:24festivals around the world. He's very successful.
- 24:27And a lot of what he focuses on is Muslim representation in
- 24:31Hollywood and in media. Yeah.
- 24:33So he acts in films and he produces films which focus on
- 24:38taboos that Muslims have and so on and of course, when you look
- 24:42at like Netflix and so on. Yeah.
- 24:44Well how will Muslims represented most of the time
- 24:46either? They're upset represented as
- 24:49terrorists and all of that stuff or more recently, you know, the
- 24:54shows like Miss Marvel for example, where they're
- 24:56represented as As young rebellious girls, taking off
- 25:00their head job, me and goodbye Boys in school reload.
- 25:03It's one or the other. Like, there's no, you don't
- 25:05have, like an ordinary character, you know?
- 25:07I mean, like there's some shows, okay?
- 25:08They'll have like an ordinary character whose presumably
- 25:12Muslim by their name, you know? I mean, but it's a very rare
- 25:15phenomenon to see that. It says, it says, and
- 25:18unfortunately, I think sometimes it's our fault that we don't
- 25:22shed light on it as much. Yeah, so it's important to have,
- 25:25you know, platform such as the after market report.
- 25:27Us, which is why people should subscribe.
- 25:29Subscribe! Now we're going to talk about
- 25:31smash it. We're going to talk about the
- 25:33giveaway very soon because we just released one, Charlotte
- 25:36will touch on that. This is important for platforms.
- 25:39If we're not given a voice, we create that voice.
- 25:41Yeah. The world heard the Echoes of
- 25:43who. Muslims are ya?
- 25:44I knew we should have learned from Netflix that for example.
- 25:48Okay. If this girl is wearing hijab I
- 25:50should take so all throughout the series.
- 25:52Yeah, I mean it's okay. She's got she's evil she's
- 25:55confused or she feels oppressed or shit.
- 25:57Was forced to wear it. And that's a false narrative as
- 26:00happening. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:01Yeah, that's just one example. I gave the example of long
- 26:03ourselves up for example, and it's not just Muslims, by the
- 26:05way, I think the Africans have it as well as we do.
- 26:08Yeah. You always like the villains of
- 26:10the always like, unfortunately sad.
- 26:12Yeah, it's very sad. I think a lot of minorities
- 26:14religious and ethnic minorities being misrepresented for years
- 26:18in the media, you know, there's an incredible amount of like
- 26:24best representation and slaughtering at the end of the
- 26:26day, you know, it's It's unfair, it's not right.
- 26:30You know, but the one thing that we have to say is that at the
- 26:32end of the day there's there's an important thing for Muslims
- 26:35to do and that is to take a step forward and try and involve
- 26:38ourselves. So, you know, and I know we do
- 26:41this, it's hard, but for example, if you're playing
- 26:43football, you know, take it, seriously, you never know if.
- 26:46If you reckon, you're good enough to play professional
- 26:48football, keep at it and if you're a parent now, then you're
- 26:51watching, encourage your kids to play sports, you never know what
- 26:54Heights, your children could reach occlude the Carotid shop
- 26:56including God. You're right.
- 26:59And if your children are interested in drama and acting
- 27:02in, this is my personal opinion, of course, I think one should
- 27:04pursue it. I would, you know, I would love
- 27:06seeing. Yeah, she are acting.
- 27:09Yeah, I think that's something that we really need to get.
- 27:12Yeah, I have a friend. Really good friend of mine.
- 27:17He's a great friend of mine. He's, he's an actor like, as in.
- 27:20He's got his job and he's doing his own thing.
- 27:23He works in like advertising, as on, but on the side.
- 27:27Is to make some spare change. He does extras for film.
- 27:31So he's been in like me, Leonardo DiCaprio films, been a
- 27:33big films films that you've definitely watched and he's poor
- 27:37guy when he was young, I was always getting cost for roles as
- 27:41terrorists. So he would, he would be cost
- 27:44and its really sad. Because, obviously now he's
- 27:46grown and this, what I'm talking about 20-30 years ago, so
- 27:49surprised now he's grown up and he's now developed a portfolio,
- 27:52he's got enough credit to demand a different role or whatever,
- 27:56but he told me I am. A very specifically said it's
- 27:59impossible to get into that industry as a Pakistani or an
- 28:01Arab and a young Muslim with a beard and someone unless you're
- 28:05playing a specific role you know role that someone wants you to
- 28:08play. You can't apply.
- 28:09You can't, you can't put yourself forward for a
- 28:11mainstream role. If you're not White America and
- 28:14a white British, you know, in some cases.
- 28:15Yeah. Do you know what I mean?
- 28:16So, it's tough. You know, by the end of the day,
- 28:19I think there is an onus on us. There's responsibility on us to
- 28:21take things more, seriously, like that, and it's not just
- 28:24acting in football talking about teaching, talking about It's
- 28:28talking about, you know, a degree in law, whatever it is,
- 28:32in different fields, continue to Excel and to be in Charlotte
- 28:35than at the top of everything. Do you remember when Trump was
- 28:38in power? Yeah, and you bring this Muslim
- 28:40but yeah, there was one thing where he mentioned when he said
- 28:43I think Islam hates us the rumble.
- 28:46Yes. Argument that as a Muslim our
- 28:49shocked. Yeah.
- 28:51President of although I can say it doesn't surprise me for
- 28:55political gain but the fact the president of the I said States,
- 28:57actually said, Islam hates us. He fed into that narrative.
- 29:02Yeah of course of course yeah yeah I need somehow we need to
- 29:06find a way where I can say, you know, if you are not Muslim
- 29:09listening to this podcast, for example, Make sure, you know
- 29:13where you're getting your news from where, what sort of world
- 29:16do we live in? Where the leader of the who
- 29:18wrote three world in the president, the us could say,
- 29:20Islam hates us or where the prime minister of the UK.
- 29:23At the time can say that women look like letter boxes and bank,
- 29:26robbers can work. What sort of world is that?
- 29:30Yeah, we're meant to be a civilized, Western Libya, post
- 29:34liberalist world that we live in.
- 29:36How can one say we live in a world of freedom of speech, and
- 29:39freedom of expression and belief.
- 29:41And at the same time, we here, Like that, you know, there is a
- 29:44responsibility on us to hold such people to account holds
- 29:48such systems to account. And as Muslims to use our
- 29:51voices, we believe in empowerment.
- 29:53What's the point of following? The example, of say, the zainab
- 29:56Salam, alaika Lejos de department, has a hot ass llama
- 29:58here in these nights. Of course, we commemorate her.
- 30:01If we don't know how to follow their example, in standing up to
- 30:04oppression, and we say that phrase standing up to
- 30:06oppression. It sounds very cliche, but in
- 30:08practice, it's effective. Yeah, you know, you speak.
- 30:12Scout when you hear someone talk smack about you, mmm, you know
- 30:15you have to speak up, you have to say something, whether it's
- 30:18signing a petition on the very lowest level which is like Takes
- 30:21a Minute of our time or whether it's going out there.
- 30:24And speaking to people speaking to MPS, educating people in
- 30:27schools, being part of focus groups and action groups.
- 30:30Like, these are things that we can get involved in.
- 30:33But, you know, the end of the day, Muslims will never ever be
- 30:36represented fairly and equally unless two things happen.
- 30:41One is the mainstream establishment gives us the
- 30:44respect we deserve and to as Muslims Force our way into it,
- 30:48you know, there was a report I read, yes, mentioned mainstream
- 30:51More than 70% of news articles when it comes to Islam and
- 30:55Muslims is negative. - how maybe don't just ask herself.
- 31:00I'll give you one example. If they want to let's say, they
- 31:04say there's a criminal. Yeah, his name is Ahmed, for
- 31:07example. They show him in the most
- 31:10craftiest way. Why did you pick that name?
- 31:12Huh what is the most common name hamburger the way they show or
- 31:20portray this criminal? For example is the most yeah,
- 31:24you're right. Accosting way that you'd want to
- 31:26hate Islam yourself but let's say someone who's not a Muslim
- 31:29and his name is John well hurry or bury whoever they are they'll
- 31:33show him a they'll show a nice smiling picture with his wife
- 31:36and his kids for the same crime but it's true.
- 31:39It's true. Yeah, so you can we hear about
- 31:41lights and there's an agenda. You can clearly see it.
- 31:42We hear about all the time and to be fair again, another
- 31:45shout-out to the adversity, part of our community has done
- 31:49incredible work scrutinizing and holding the media to account
- 31:52over the last few years, who has consistently held mainstream
- 31:56media to account for their misrepresentation of Muslims
- 31:59versus non Muslims. So, specifically, for example,
- 32:01when you talk about the representation of of criminals,
- 32:04like you say and for Muslims do use the word like terrorists.
- 32:07Yes. All We'll talk about politics
- 32:09and political gain, when it's white English, man or a white
- 32:13America man. They'll use the words mental
- 32:15health, mental health Lone Wolf, you know, deranged psychopath
- 32:20things like that. Lone Wolf.
- 32:22Like these kind of weddings and terminologies subconsciously
- 32:25have an effect and and shape the way Generations.
- 32:30Think for years to come you know and unfortunately again I'm
- 32:34going to go back to the thing that true Georgie said if you
- 32:36haven't had the podcast tuned in with probably two or three
- 32:38points. Gasps ago, we talked about this
- 32:40guy who said that Muslims, blow themselves up and he did a full
- 32:44apology and did a podcast follow-up and so on.
- 32:47But generally speaking, I think a guy like that who's actually
- 32:51probably not a bad guy, but has been conditioned to think in a
- 32:54way like that, is because of the result of the society lives in.
- 32:57Even us as Muslims. Yeah, I know many people who
- 33:01actually looked look at Muslim countries and feel as if we're
- 33:04back with yeah. Or they feel as if we're not
- 33:06progressing or, you know, we are Medieval times.
- 33:10And that's because what they see on TV?
- 33:11Yeah, well, they read the newspaper.
- 33:13What they watch the movies, for example.
- 33:14Yeah. But when they go to that
- 33:15country, the like Madonna, that can't be it.
- 33:18Yeah, that's exactly what you said.
- 33:20Just now is exactly why the Qatar World Cup is a big deal
- 33:22because people have gone there. And they've had a perception
- 33:24about Islamic countries in Arab countries and they've come,
- 33:27either they've come back after England's, lost all, they're
- 33:29still there, they're having a ball of a time.
- 33:31Yeah. So inshallah we praying.
- 33:33Do, you know, there's actually had to wait just mention I
- 33:36should have. I'm not saying the UAE is the
- 33:38Most best representative of Islam and its values for
- 33:42example. But there was one family that I
- 33:45know, no, no, no Arab not Muslim, they went to the UAE,
- 33:49okay? And they managed to interact
- 33:51speak, you know, see some of the tradition and the culture and
- 33:55the values Islam has, for example, and they were shocked,
- 33:58what law they were absolutely shocked and then they came back.
- 34:01Do like, you guys are like human beings that they would be very,
- 34:04very general genuine, sorry really.
- 34:07And they live a few doors, down the road.
- 34:09Wow. Yeah yeah it does so much good
- 34:11that can come out of interfaith and multiculturalism and it's
- 34:15in. It's really nice when you have
- 34:16conversations like my neighbors are Hindus.
- 34:17Yeah, and we're really close to them.
- 34:19Now we learn a lot and like handle our they've learned a lot
- 34:24about asking the way we practice and so on.
- 34:26So shallow, there's more that we can do as a community.
- 34:28I think we need to be more open to that it shall.
- 34:30We need to encourage people to learn more about us and we
- 34:33should also do the same learn more about others.
- 34:35Hmm. You know, we mentioned all the
- 34:36time of the pas de las plantas, says that, You know, we've
- 34:39created you into tribes in different people so you can get
- 34:41to know one another. So hopefully we can represent
- 34:44ourselves better. We can be represented better.
- 34:46We can make effort to learn in sha.
- 34:48Allah. I just got a final question.
- 34:49Yeah. Do you think Muslims have
- 34:52integrated enough as a huge questions?
- 34:54They may be another podcast. Yeah, you mean in the UK or from
- 34:59your perspective? Like being here London, bro?
- 35:01That's a huge question, man. I mean, the Muslim Community in
- 35:04the UK is so sporadic on one end.
- 35:08The Just why I say that because I've always heard, you know,
- 35:12Muslims need to integrate more. But yeah, no, it's true.
- 35:16It's true to a degree, but maybe others maybe.
- 35:18They're not getting in the right blue Berets.
- 35:19I have no idea. Yeah, that's an example.
- 35:21Yes, we are paying you, no taxes.
- 35:24Whatever it is, like, we are there wherever you want us to
- 35:26be? Yeah, of course, of course it
- 35:28were, doctors were dentist where Engineers were shuttling.
- 35:31What is? Yeah, that in my opinion, my
- 35:33humble opinion, they wanted to leave Islam.
- 35:34I think that's what they mean by integrate more.
- 35:37The thing is you've got to end. As of the scale and the Muslim
- 35:40Community in the West. In the UK, the lowest performing
- 35:44demographic of our UK residents, statistics say are 35 to 40 year
- 35:52old Bangladeshi. Women living in East London, in
- 35:54terms of salary, in terms of literacy rates, in terms of
- 35:57health care in terms of benefits.
- 35:58So on and so forth. Mmm, but at the same time, on
- 36:01the other end of the spectrum, some of the highest performing
- 36:04school students are Muslims, the most philanthropic Make people
- 36:09in the UK are Muslims, eight out of ten Muslim families in the
- 36:13UK, give charity on an annual basis, which I personally think
- 36:15is 10/10 the fact sweet little Charity Muslims and the UK are
- 36:20more charitable. Yes.
- 36:22Then everyone the other thing. Yeah so eight out of ten must
- 36:24inform now. We are minority minority.
- 36:27Eight out of ten. Most infamous give charity once
- 36:29a year, which I think is 10/10. But anyway in the UK three out
- 36:32of ten average, family members or whatever Christian or
- 36:36whatever, give charity in the UK, and one out of 10.
- 36:38An atheist families in the UK, give charity, this is
- 36:41paraphrasing, I might be wrong. Statistically by remember very
- 36:44clearly the BBC article four years ago and its really
- 36:47interesting to note this because have we integrated correctly.
