- 0:00Speaker 1: Gospel Reflection for the 31st day of October in the
- 0:04Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026. This is from Luke chapter 14,
- 0:09Speaker 1: verses 1 and 7 through 14. And it came to pass,
- 0:13Speaker 1: when Jesus went into the house of one of the
- 0:15Speaker 1: chief Pharisees on the Sabbath day to eat bread, that
- 0:17Speaker 1: they watched him. And he spoke a parable also to
- 0:21Speaker 1: them that were invited, marking how they chose the first
- 0:24Speaker 1: seats of the tables. Saying to them, When thou art
- 0:26Speaker 1: invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place,
- 0:30Speaker 1: lest perhaps one more honorable than thou be invited by him.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And he that invited thee and him come and say
- 0:38Speaker 1: to thee, Give this man place, and then thou, being
- 0:43Speaker 1: with shame, to take the lowest place. But when thou
- 0:46Speaker 1: art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place, that
- 0:50Speaker 1: when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend,
- 0:53Speaker 1: go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them
- 0:57Speaker 1: that sit at the table with thee, because everyone that
- 1:00Speaker 1: exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself
- 1:05Speaker 1: shall be exalted. And he said to him also that
- 1:08Speaker 1: had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper,
- 1:12Speaker 1: call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen,
- 1:15Speaker 1: nor thy neighbors who are rich, lest perhaps they also
- 1:18Speaker 1: invite thee again, and recompense be made to thee. But
- 1:22Speaker 1: when thou makest a feast... call to the poor, the maimed,
- 1:26Speaker 1: the lame, the blind, and thou shalt be blessed, because
- 1:29Speaker 1: they have not wherewith to make thee recompense, for recompense
- 1:33Speaker 1: shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just.
- 1:38Speaker 1: At first blush, it seems that Jesus is giving very
- 1:41Speaker 1: practical advice in today's gospel. While our culture still has
- 1:44Speaker 1: stations of class, manners, and pride, during our Lord's earthly ministry,
- 1:48Speaker 1: this was much more than a matter of ego. Surely
- 1:52Speaker 1: one may be offended and feel embarrassed, but in a
- 1:54Speaker 1: time where to be honored was to be privileged and
- 1:57Speaker 1: to be shamed meant exclusion from society and often economic loss.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Such positions matter much more. One favored by a wealthy,
- 2:05Speaker 1: powerful official placed in a seat of honor may expect
- 2:09Speaker 1: great privileges and opportunity. One shamed may literally be competing
- 2:13Speaker 1: with wild dogs for food the next day, excluded from
- 2:16Speaker 1: the graces and benefits of a ruler or rich man.
- 2:20Speaker 1: But of course, our Lord has a much deeper meaning
- 2:22Speaker 1: in his words. The keys to the kingdom of heaven
- 2:25Speaker 1: are humility, purity, and love of God and neighbor. These
- 2:29Speaker 1: virtues are the surest route to salvation. Most of us
- 2:32Speaker 1: struggle with purity and both the love of God that
- 2:35Speaker 1: would allow us to suffer any pain or misfortune without complaint,
- 2:40Speaker 1: trusting in his divine providence, and love of neighbor that
- 2:42Speaker 1: would lead us to gladly sacrifice anything for his good.
- 2:45Speaker 1: While humility is also a difficult virtue to cultivate, We
- 2:50Speaker 1: can find countless occasions in which to practice it. It
- 2:55Speaker 1: is by training ourselves to put our needs and desires last. Oh,
- 3:01Speaker 1: this is what I missed. It is the practice of
- 3:03Speaker 1: humility that leads to purity, love of God and neighbor.
- 3:08Speaker 1: By training ourselves to put our needs and desires last,
- 3:11Speaker 1: subservient to God and man, we may obtain holiness. Humility
- 3:15Speaker 1: is far more valuable than wealth, intelligence, or stations. It
- 3:20Speaker 1: is the opposite of the pride that led both the
- 3:22Speaker 1: devil and our first parents to sin. Humility is a
- 3:26Speaker 1: virtue shown to us constantly by our Blessed Mother. Humility
- 3:30Speaker 1: is a self-sacrifice through which we join in our Lord's crucifixion.
- 3:34Speaker 1: The smallest child and the greatest man may both be
- 3:37Speaker 1: equally humble. There is no barrier to entry save our
- 3:40Speaker 1: own pride. In the eyes of God, all the gold
- 3:43Speaker 1: in the world is absolutely worthless. But the smallest act
- 3:46Speaker 1: of humility is of infinite value. Humility is despised by
- 3:50Speaker 1: the world, but it will never go unrewarded by God.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Humility is also a virtue we can practice both in
- 3:56Speaker 1: our religious and secular lives. We can humbly ask forgiveness
- 4:00Speaker 1: for sin and humbly receive God's grace. We can also
- 4:03Speaker 1: open the door for a stranger or make sure our
- 4:05Speaker 1: family members are taken care of before we consider our
- 4:07Speaker 1: own needs. Through practicing humility, the entire world becomes a
- 4:11Speaker 1: gymnasium for the development of saints. All right, y'all, have
- 4:14Speaker 1: a good one, and I will talk to you tomorrow.
