- 0:00Chrisitie: Technology has a million apps, a million websites that we can easily get an answer, but we lose.
- 0:06Chrisitie: So much actual relationships that
- 0:09Christie: we're
- 0:09Chrisitie: gaining wisdom and insight
- 0:13Speaker: If you're anything like the moms I talk with every week, you're probably carrying more noise than you even realize.
- 0:23Speaker: Advice, opinions, warnings.
- 0:27Speaker: All of it piling up while you're just trying to raise your kids with a little peace and confidence.
- 0:34Speaker: And after a while, all of it can blur together and feel confusing and even a little intimidating.
- 0:43Speaker: Let's take a moment together and talk about what happens when information starts shouting louder than the people who actually know and love us.
- 0:53Speaker: I am Cheryl Lang and I'm glad you're here with me on the Parenting Podcast.
- 1:09Chrisitie: Well, you know, Cheryl, I'm surrounded by 20 somethings in my life.
- 1:12Chrisitie: Yes, you are.
- 1:12Chrisitie: And, um, my girls specifically, we were, we were chatting about you and the impact you've had in our family's life the other day.
- 1:21Chrisitie: And my, my girls just think you are the coolest and that you're by far the most culturally relevant and engaged person in your respected age group that, um, it's just so great that you do stay so aware of what.
- 1:37Chrisitie: What this cultural moment holds rather than shaking your fist at kids on your lawn or, you know.
- 1:43Chrisitie: Wow.
- 1:43Chrisitie: Like a lot of times happens as people get older, they might just have the, um, negative observations Yeah.
- 1:50Chrisitie: Of the generations that are coming up
- 1:52Cheryl New: and it's
- 1:53Chrisitie: just, we appreciate it so much.
- 1:55Chrisitie: Your voice in our life.
- 1:56Cheryl New: Oh, everybody.
- 1:57Cheryl New: I'm just, wow, that's amazing.
- 2:00Cheryl New: Well, you know, I love your girls.
- 2:01Cheryl New: Yes, yes.
- 2:02Cheryl New: So that's easy to do, but you know, it's intentional.
- 2:07Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 2:07Cheryl New: Christy, I really want to listen and learn and be engaged, and if I stay in my own little mind, in my little world and mm-hmm.
- 2:18Cheryl New: Having things the way I want them, which it doesn't work out, but.
- 2:23Cheryl New: Like that with your girls?
- 2:24Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 2:25Cheryl New: What relationship can I have with them if I go, well, yeah, but we used to do it this way.
- 2:30Cheryl New: Right.
- 2:30Cheryl New: Why are you doing that?
- 2:31Cheryl New: And I don't wanna do it.
- 2:33Cheryl New: I enjoy learning from them.
- 2:34Chrisitie: Right.
- 2:34Chrisitie: Well, just the fact that you went from barely even knowing a single podcast existed.
- 2:39Chrisitie: That's true.
- 2:40Chrisitie: To now being the producer, editor, you know, everything.
- 2:44Chrisitie: Everything.
- 2:44Chrisitie: The host of this podcast.
- 2:46Chrisitie: Just shows, you know, that anytime in your life you can keep learning new things.
- 2:50Chrisitie: Boy is
- 2:51Cheryl AI: that the truth?
- 2:51Cheryl AI: That's one of the things I wanna role model.
- 2:53Cheryl AI: Yeah.
- 2:54Cheryl AI: For everybody, all my cloud of witnesses, of people watching mm-hmm.
- 2:58Cheryl AI: And coming after me.
- 3:00Cheryl AI: Uh, it was interesting, somebody I know they went to this.
- 3:04Cheryl AI: Very high level exclusive conference with the top tier AI people.
- 3:10Cheryl AI: I'm not gonna name any here, but if you could name people that you know in that world, they were there mm-hmm.
- 3:15Cheryl AI: Leading the conference.
- 3:16Cheryl AI: Mm-hmm.
- 3:17Cheryl AI: And it was a very specific.
- 3:18Cheryl AI: High powered group.
- 3:20Cheryl AI: Okay.
- 3:20Cheryl AI: Okay.
- 3:20Cheryl AI: That I would never be invited to.
- 3:21Cheryl AI: Right.
- 3:22Cheryl AI: Not people we have
- 3:22Chrisitie: lunch with.
- 3:23Cheryl New: No, but it was really interesting because what is happening and the reality of ai, but when they got to the end of it, they said, so what do we do?
- 3:33Cheryl New: How do we stay relevant?
- 3:35Cheryl New: And then they Say, actually it's this Christie.
- 3:38Cheryl New: Be willing to learn and unlearn and relearn.
- 3:43Cheryl New: Oh, so the advice on this top level uhhuh of ai, uh, technology guru.
- 3:50Cheryl New: Yeah, guru technology people was keep learning, be willing to keep learning.
- 3:54Cheryl New: Wow.
- 3:55Cheryl New: Be willing to change.
- 3:56Cheryl New: And relearn and keep on learning.
- 3:59Cheryl New: That's incredible.
- 4:00Cheryl New: I thought, isn't that fantastic?
- 4:01Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 4:01Chrisitie: That and that, that's for every age of
- 4:04Cheryl New: our lives.
- 4:04Cheryl New: It, it certainly is.
- 4:05Cheryl New: And you know, with a lot of people in my life, I go, I'm training my replacement, you know?
- 4:09Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 4:10Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 4:10Chrisitie: Well, and the reason I even bring this up is I was overhearing a, a mom talk it's a young mom.
- 4:17Chrisitie: She had three young kids and she was talking about the.
- 4:21Chrisitie: The treasure that she has in her mother and grandmother.
- 4:24Chrisitie: Oh, wow.
- 4:24Chrisitie: Being able to talk to them about
- 4:26Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 4:27Chrisitie: Parenting and, and mothering and the voice that they have in her life, but that she had such a, a tendency to Google something or ask chat gpt something when she has this wealth of wisdom at her fingertips in her mom and grandma.
- 4:40Chrisitie: And, and you know, my daughter even called me this morning and, and she started the phone call with, I'm sorry, I know I could have Googled this, but Aww.
- 4:49Chrisitie: And then went on to ask her question and I thought.
- 4:51Chrisitie: Please do not ever apologize for asking me your mom.
- 4:56Chrisitie: Yes.
- 4:56Chrisitie: Something instead of Googling it.
- 4:58Chrisitie: Yes.
- 4:58Chrisitie: And I'm just so grateful for you and your voice in my life and parenting all these years and, and I think, you know, it is so tempting to just turn to the easy answer.
- 5:09Chrisitie: Technology has a million apps, a million websites that we can easily get an answer, but we lose.
- 5:16Chrisitie: So much when we don't have actual relationships that
- 5:20Christie: we're
- 5:20Chrisitie: gaining wisdom and insight from.
- 5:23Cheryl New: Absolutely.
- 5:24Cheryl New: I, I have a lot of compassion.
- 5:27Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 5:27Cheryl New: Because I understand, I see it all around.
- 5:30Chrisitie: Mm-hmm.
- 5:30Cheryl New: Uh, and people talk to me all the time about exactly what you said, my daughters and I, we banter about it a lot.
- 5:38Cheryl New: It's.
- 5:39Cheryl New: A real trap, Christie.
- 5:41Cheryl New: I mean, like that at that conference they were talking the trap on a, you know,$20 billion level.
- 5:48Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 5:48Cheryl New: But.
- 5:49Cheryl New: It's the same thing.
- 5:50Cheryl New: We're losing relationships.
- 5:52Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 5:53Cheryl New: For the information.
- 5:54Cheryl New: Right.
- 5:55Cheryl New: And the problem is particularly the more and more sophisticated that AI gets this whole issue that people are connecting to the, the.
- 6:05Cheryl New: Computer program.
- 6:07Cheryl New: I don't think you're supposed to call AI Computer program.
- 6:09Cheryl New: Okay.
- 6:10Cheryl New: What is it you call it?
- 6:11Chrisitie: I don't even know.
- 6:12Chrisitie: Um, just the technology.
- 6:14Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 6:14Cheryl New: But whatever it is, the technology that they are getting, that emotional relationship and attachment.
- 6:20Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 6:21Cheryl New: Because it's.
- 6:22Cheryl New: Curated for them.
- 6:23Cheryl New: It's giving them the feedback and so forth.
- 6:26Cheryl New: Right.
- 6:26Cheryl New: But now we have all this loneliness, and specifically our audience that we're talking here, young parents and seasoning parents, that we need each other.
- 6:38Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 6:39Cheryl New: And, I love the honor with your girls, that I have that relationship.
- 6:44Cheryl New: You know, I'm crazy about you.
- 6:45Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 6:46Cheryl New: And that our lives have been intertwined.
- 6:48Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 6:49Cheryl New: And like to be culturally relevant.
- 6:52Cheryl New: Part of it is,'cause I'll go, Christie, tell me and you'll tell me something new or mm-hmm.
- 6:56Cheryl New: Make sure that I know, you know, like when the ERAS tour came out.
- 7:00Cheryl New: Go Right.
- 7:00Cheryl New: You do know about that Uhhuh so that I can know the conversation so that I'm not talking with 1970 Groovy Right information.
- 7:11Cheryl New: And I'm also not trying to be, um, a cool TikTok Right.
- 7:17Cheryl New: 20-year-old.
- 7:18Cheryl New: Someone
- 7:18Chrisitie: you aren't, yeah.
- 7:19Chrisitie: Yes.
- 7:19Cheryl New: To be myself, but to love others better.
- 7:22Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 7:22Chrisitie: And you and I both have learned from younger generations too.
- 7:26Chrisitie: Absolutely.
- 7:26Chrisitie: I mean.
- 7:27Chrisitie: I know that when I was young, nobody was talking about emotional health.
- 7:32Chrisitie: Nobody was talking about relational wisdom.
- 7:35Chrisitie: Absolutely.
- 7:35Chrisitie: Nobody was talking about using sunscreen, you know?
- 7:37Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 7:37Chrisitie: There were a lot of things we weren't talking about in the eighties and nineties and um, I, I think that in itself is wisdom to be teachable.
- 7:47Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 7:47Chrisitie: And humble enough to say, Hey, I have stuff to learn from you guys too, but this all requires relationship.
- 7:53Cheryl New: You know, I might even tweak that and say.
- 7:55Cheryl New: That is wisdom.
- 7:56Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 7:57Cheryl New: That you're open
- 7:58Cheryl New (2): to learn.
- 7:59Cheryl New (2): I will say there's so much that I have learned and been impacted listening to my grown children.
- 8:05Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 8:06Cheryl New (2): And having conversations.
- 8:08Cheryl New (2): Some of the topics you mentioned, but also one of the things is the word privilege in culture came up about 10 years ago in our conversations.
- 8:19Cheryl New (2): Mm-hmm.
- 8:19Cheryl New (2): And, um.
- 8:21Cheryl New (2): Even though we might have been a little bit different place on the political spectrum.
- 8:25Chrisitie: Mm-hmm.
- 8:26Cheryl New: We all talked about it.
- 8:28Cheryl New: Right.
- 8:28Cheryl New: And we interacted.
- 8:29Cheryl New: And my children hugely impacted me because I listened, because we talked let's open this up some and talk about some of the struggle because we have.
- 8:40Cheryl New: So much input.
- 8:42Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 8:42Cheryl New: Astronomical input, but we're losing relationships.
- 8:46Cheryl New: Right.
- 8:46Cheryl New: And so particularly let's look at it maybe the parents that are listening, what some of their struggles might be, and evaluate it a little bit and see what we do with it.
- 8:56Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 8:56Chrisitie: I love that because even though they are natives to their, their cultural moment that they're living in, there are things that.
- 9:03Chrisitie: You know, you and I both come from different generations, but older generations than, than young moms right now.
- 9:10Chrisitie: And we can still, um, help them retain some of the jewels that came from our cultural moment that we were in
- 9:17Cheryl New: our, at our young parenting.
- 9:18Cheryl New: There's an expression called Don't throw the baby out with a bathroom.
- 9:21Cheryl New: Right.
- 9:22Cheryl New: You know, that you just go, oh, well, and you wipe it all off.
- 9:25Cheryl New: And, and that's one of the things when I can, with my kids, I go, let's be careful.
- 9:30Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 9:30Cheryl New: And let's glean what's good.
- 9:32Cheryl New: I mean, it's like when they mined for gold, they would throw the rocks away, but they would keep the gold.
- 9:37Cheryl New: And that's just what you're saying.
- 9:38Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 9:39Cheryl New: To look for what's good but you don't have to take everything.
- 9:43Cheryl New: Right.
- 9:44Cheryl New: Um, okay.
- 9:44Cheryl New: So what would you say with this unlimited access to information.
- 9:49Cheryl New: that's eroding relationships.
- 9:53Cheryl New: Mm.
- 9:53Cheryl New: And then you, you know, the young woman you were talking about, what a fantastic thing and I, I think.
- 10:00Cheryl New: You told me that her parents and her grandparents all live actually in physical proximity.
- 10:06Chrisitie: Right.
- 10:07Cheryl New: So not only does she have the relationship, but also they're physically close.
- 10:11Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 10:12Cheryl New: And see, I didn't have that.
- 10:13Cheryl New: I didn't ever know any of my grandparents.
- 10:16Cheryl New: Okay.
- 10:16Cheryl New: And then.
- 10:17Cheryl New: Um, my dad died when I was in my thirties, and then my mom lived in another state, so she wasn't around all the time.
- 10:25Cheryl New: Mm.
- 10:25Cheryl New: So I just didn't have that mentoring wonderful relationship, and I wish I had, so now we don't want the gap to be filled up with information mm-hmm.
- 10:37Cheryl New: Off of the internet and particularly ai.
- 10:40Cheryl New: So what are some of the other struggles that come with this?
- 10:44Chrisitie: Yeah, I mean, I I don't know if it's always been like this.
- 10:47Chrisitie: I've only lived in my, my years on the planet.
- 10:51Chrisitie: We only
- 10:51Cheryl New: have our lives,
- 10:52Chrisitie: right.
- 10:53Chrisitie: But I know that I experienced this as a young mom where I just wanted to do everything just right.
- 10:59Chrisitie: Absolutely.
- 11:01Chrisitie: But what I see in.
- 11:03Chrisitie: In people who are just now starting to parent that it is like supersized that desire and almost a need to do everything right.
- 11:12Chrisitie: That there's this maybe like kind of it has to do with cancel culture or Yeah.
- 11:17Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 11:17Chrisitie: You know, just having your life on display with social media.
- 11:20Chrisitie: There's this fear of doing something wrong where maybe my generation of moms wanted.
- 11:25Chrisitie: To do it right, because we loved our kids.
- 11:28Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 11:28Chrisitie: But now it's like this externally imposed fear on moms, on parents.
- 11:33Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 11:34Chrisitie: To do it all right all the time and not get anything wrong.
- 11:37Chrisitie: Oh, don't let anybody find out that you gave them honey or you, oh, whatever.
- 11:43Chrisitie: Now they're going back.
- 11:44Cheryl New: I just saw a study about peanuts, uhhuh, and they've now realized, oh, by the way, if you give them a little bit of peanuts, they won't have a peanut allergy.
- 11:52Cheryl New: The problem is all that information.
- 11:55Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 11:56Cheryl New: And I think maybe because it's so information loaded.
- 12:00Cheryl New: Right, but what you said, you think just a little more information.
- 12:03Cheryl New: I can figure this out.
- 12:04Cheryl New: Right.
- 12:04Cheryl New: Oh, if I just listened to two more podcasts, if I just, uh.
- 12:09Cheryl New: And we say Google, but I do we chat it,
- 12:11Chrisitie: right?
- 12:11Chrisitie: Can I chat it?
- 12:12Cheryl New: Is that a verb?
- 12:13Chrisitie: A friend of mine says Ask Chitchat.
- 12:15Chrisitie: That's what she calls it.
- 12:17Cheryl New: And that I could get one more information so I'll know.
- 12:21Cheryl New: What do I feed my children?
- 12:22Cheryl New: Do I let them, what side do they sleep on?
- 12:24Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 12:25Cheryl New: I really have a compassion.
- 12:26Cheryl New: I know, I see it ramping up as well.
- 12:29Cheryl New: Right.
- 12:29Chrisitie: And I, I think, um, in response to that, have you heard of this type B mom?
- 12:36Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 12:36Chrisitie: Yes.
- 12:36Chrisitie: Okay.
- 12:36Chrisitie: Of course.
- 12:37Chrisitie: So it's, it's the idea that like.
- 12:39Chrisitie: Just being a little more lax, you know?
- 12:41Chrisitie: And, and I think maybe the people that are wanting to push back against that are saying, Hey, I'm, I'm not giving into that.
- 12:48Chrisitie: I am what I am.
- 12:49Chrisitie: And so maybe there's a hint of hope there that, that some of the moms are saying, I'm not gonna, you know, obsess over every detail that we're just exhausted.
- 12:59Chrisitie: I don't know.
- 13:00Cheryl New: And, and the problem is it's constant Yeah.
- 13:03Cheryl New: All the time.
- 13:04Cheryl New: And, It's several things, several Cs.
- 13:07Cheryl New: It's constant.
- 13:09Cheryl New: It's a companion that is there all the time when all your friends or extended family are not.
- 13:15Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 13:16Cheryl New: And then it can be contradictory.
- 13:18Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 13:19Chrisitie: See
- 13:19Cheryl New: that's the thing.
- 13:19Cheryl New: There's so much and they're all so Right.
- 13:23Cheryl New: Right.
- 13:23Cheryl New: You know, whoever it is, they can just tell you all this IT
- 13:26Chrisitie: authority and sounds like an expert.
- 13:29Chrisitie: Exactly.
- 13:30Chrisitie: Mm-hmm.
- 13:30Chrisitie: I mean, it
- 13:30Cheryl New: is after
- 13:31Chrisitie: all ai, right?
- 13:32Chrisitie: Well, or even just people, like anybody with a TikTok account go, sounds like an expert.
- 13:36Chrisitie: We go, you know, if you hear it on the internet, it must be true.
- 13:39Chrisitie: It was kind of the, even though we joke about that, we still kind of believe
- 13:43Cheryl New: in it.
- 13:44Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 13:44Cheryl New: And back in the day, way back in the day.
- 13:48Cheryl New: On tv, they would have commercials and they would have some actor have a white coat on.
- 13:53Cheryl New: Oh, Uhhuh with a stethoscope over his shoulder Yes.
- 13:56Cheryl New: Telling you, oh, doctors take whatever it is, or do whatever.
- 13:59Cheryl New: And then they had to finally say, well, I'm not a doctor, but I You know, but just that, that people would do what the actor mm-hmm.
- 14:08Cheryl New: In the commercial said.
- 14:09Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 14:09Cheryl New: Because he had a white coat on.
- 14:11Cheryl New: Right.
- 14:12Cheryl New: And now the authority of being the.
- 14:17Cheryl New: Ai, artificial intelligence, or on TikTok because they can curate it all and they can make it very personalized to you, and they do talk with such authority.
- 14:28Cheryl New: So not only is it the overwhelming fear, I want to do it right and I don't know what to do.
- 14:34Cheryl New: And I think it's the other fomo.
- 14:36Cheryl New: That I'm, if I'm not keeping up with it, I might miss out on it like
- 14:40Chrisitie: Right, I
- 14:40Cheryl New: didn't know about Mom B what, what type Mom B is there?
- 14:44Cheryl New: Right.
- 14:44Cheryl New: Parent B.
- 14:45Cheryl New: And there you, it's a two-headed monster.
- 14:48Cheryl New: It's way overwhelming'cause it's too much.
- 14:50Cheryl New: And then when you're not, you're always looking over the fence.
- 14:54Cheryl New: Am I missing out on this?
- 14:55Cheryl New: Right.
- 14:55Cheryl New: And everybody else knows and I don't.
- 14:58Cheryl New: And my children are gonna suffer.
- 14:59Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 15:00Chrisitie: Well, and I think what we started off talking about us learning from younger generations, Uhhuh and I, I think maybe that all that fear is being reinforced by the fact that previous generations did get something wrong.
- 15:16Chrisitie: And so this fear that what if we're getting something wrong, I've gotta make sure I'm not getting it wrong.
- 15:21Chrisitie: Well, the truth is.
- 15:22Chrisitie: Everybody's getting a handful of things wrong.
- 15:24Chrisitie: Of course, you're never going to have it all right.
- 15:27Chrisitie: And maybe even a little bit of our pride wanting to be the generation of parents that figures it all out for sure.
- 15:34Chrisitie: Well, you know, your kids and grandkids are someday gonna tell you all the things you did wrong too.
- 15:38Cheryl New: And it is hard because of what kind of start out talking with, keeping that communication going.
- 15:46Cheryl New: Um.
- 15:47Cheryl New: I mean, I even had it said to me by, I.
- 15:50Cheryl New: Older people, you know?
- 15:53Cheryl New: Well, why are you so worried about a car seat?
- 15:55Cheryl New: You know, we just put the baby bassinet on the floor of the backseat and y'all turned out all right.
- 16:00Cheryl New: Right.
- 16:01Cheryl New: That kind of attitude.
- 16:02Cheryl New: Yeah, and the problem with that.
- 16:04Cheryl New: That cuts off communication.
- 16:06Cheryl New: Yeah.
- 16:07Cheryl New: And I wish I could go to all those older people and say, quit talking like this.
- 16:10Chrisitie: Right.
- 16:11Chrisitie: It's demeaning the younger
- 16:12Cheryl New: moms, you have so much to give.
- 16:16Cheryl New: Don't cut yourself off at the knees.
- 16:18Cheryl New: Mm-hmm.
- 16:18Cheryl New: And connect instead of condemn.
- 16:22Cheryl New: Okay?
- 16:22Cheryl New: And now I'm talking to the people who are supposed to be sharing from their lives, but that's
- 16:26Cheryl New (2): also a Problem.
- 16:28Cheryl New (2): And you know, if you have someone in your life, listeners that you want to glean from, try to pick through some of the stuff that maybe they're not handling it correctly and maybe.
- 16:40Cheryl New (2): Again, get what you can or maybe have a conversation about what would be helpful.
- 16:45Chrisitie: Yeah.
- 16:45Cheryl New: You know, to talk about that.
- 16:46Chrisitie: Well, yeah., Like I said, nobody's doing everything right.
- 16:49Chrisitie: And so you may have a handful of people in your life that have walked the path a little farther.
- 16:54Chrisitie: Mm-hmm.
- 16:54Chrisitie: Longer than you have and are able to pour into your life.
- 16:58Chrisitie: And maybe you don't follow every single thing that they have to offer.
- 17:02Chrisitie: Maybe you disagree on some things, but
- 17:04Christie: learning from.
- 17:06Chrisitie: Older generations or even somebody that's, you know, farther along than you, yeah.
- 17:11Chrisitie: Has real value rather than what the internet has to say
- 17:15Cheryl New: and one of the problems I see with what we're talking about is the loss of confidence.
- 17:22Cheryl New: Because you don't feel like the expert anymore.
- 17:24Cheryl New: Mm.
- 17:25Cheryl New: There's so much expertise, TikTok, wherever you wanna go.
