- 0:00Speaker 1: Toby and Chili mornings on demand on 97.1 Wash FM.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Well, good morning.
- 0:06Speaker 3: It's 97.1 Wash FM. Toby and Chili on this Wednesday morning.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Welcome to the second day of September. I don't understand this.
- 0:16Speaker 3: We're supposed to be back in some sort of routine.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I mean, that's the September thing, right? But the weather
- 0:22Speaker 3: is confused. It still believes it's July. And then, you know, today,
- 0:28Speaker 3: I mean, is just like get to where you're supposed
- 0:31Speaker 3: to be because, well, we're just halfway through the week.
- 0:35Speaker 3: But the good news is, Chili, there's a holiday weekend
- 0:37Speaker 3: ahead of us. And what's not to love about an
- 0:40Speaker 3: extra day off around these parts?
- 0:42Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 0:43Speaker 5: And at least in Fairfax County, they have this Friday
- 0:45Speaker 5: off as well, which is really crazy that they start school,
- 0:47Speaker 5: they stop school. It was like they just started last week.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They already have a day off.
- 0:51Speaker 3: There's something to be said about sending these kids to
- 0:54Speaker 3: school after Labor Day.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I'm with you on that.
- 0:58Speaker 5: But no, and I'm feeling good because our AC did
- 1:01Speaker 5: clunk out over the weekend briefly. We called for a
- 1:06Speaker 5: service visit. He was scheduled to come before the guy came.
- 1:11Speaker 5: It kicked back on. It was working again. So there's
- 1:13Speaker 5: nothing broken to show him, right?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:15Speaker 4: So I am hopeful and praying that.
- 1:18Speaker 5: That it stays working through the next couple of days
- 1:21Speaker 5: as we get through this heat wave.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I'm feeling good at the moment that it's working.
- 1:25Speaker 3: She's feeling good because it's 70 degrees in her house.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That's right. I'm feeling good because, you know what, I'm
- 1:32Speaker 3: going to borrow from you. My air conditioning, knock on wood,
- 1:35Speaker 3: is working just fine. Now that I've jinxed it, I'm
- 1:39Speaker 3: probably going to have to put in work orders and stuff.
- 1:41Speaker 4: We both jinxed it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Right? But you know what? Hey, you jinx it, that's life.
- 1:47Speaker 3: At least we're not out in the heat. Anyway, how
- 1:51Speaker 3: you doing this morning? What's making you feel good this
- 1:54Speaker 3: early morning? Why don't you tap the talk back microphone,
- 1:57Speaker 3: leave us a message and let us know. It's easy
- 1:59Speaker 3: if you're listening on your iHeart app, you're signed in,
- 2:01Speaker 3: just tap speak and send, okay? In the meantime, hang
- 2:04Speaker 3: out for the news, top stories at the top of
- 2:06Speaker 3: the hour in just a bit.
- 2:08Speaker 2: What is going on?
- 2:09Speaker 5: A new fan survey has crowned the NFL's least comfortable
- 2:14Speaker 5: stadium seats. Let's just say number one.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Hits close to home and you'll find out what that is.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Top stories, top of the hour.
- 2:26Speaker 5: A short-term funding bill to avoid a government shutdown heading
- 2:29Speaker 5: to the president's desk after passing the House yesterday. It'll
- 2:33Speaker 5: keep the government funded through December 11th. The judge in
- 2:37Speaker 5: Lindsay Clancy's triple murder trial sent jurors back to keep
- 2:42Speaker 5: deliberating after they said yesterday morning that they.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Could not reach a verdict.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Jurors can consider murder, manslaughter, or not guilty verdict based
- 2:50Speaker 5: on lack of criminal responsibility. Well, crossing guards are heading
- 2:54Speaker 5: back to 11 Fairfax County high schools after a student
- 2:58Speaker 5: was hit by a car near South Lakes High School
- 3:01Speaker 5: yesterday morning. Fairfax County School says it's asking the county
- 3:04Speaker 5: to restore full funding after last year's budget eliminated the guards.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Prince William County Police trying to identify a man who
- 3:12Speaker 5: followed a 15-year-old girl inside the Dumfries Target Monday afternoon
- 3:17Speaker 5: and then exposed himself and.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Made sexual gestures at her.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Police released a surveillance photo and are now asking for
- 3:24Speaker 5: the public's help in identifying him. National Guard troops in D.C.
- 3:28Speaker 5: dropped by 663 in just one week. That is the
- 3:33Speaker 5: steepest weekly decline of the summer, falling to just over
- 3:38Speaker 5: 3,600 as the final Freedom 250 anniversary event wrapped up.
- 3:43Speaker 5: And that is down 26% from the July peak of
- 3:46Speaker 5: nearly 5,000 National Guard troops. And a new fan survey
- 3:50Speaker 5: has now crowned the NFL's least comfortable stadium. Northwest Stadium,
- 3:55Speaker 5: home of the Commanders, is the most uncomfortable. It edges
- 3:59Speaker 5: out Seattle's Lumen Field. And now on the flip side,
- 4:03Speaker 5: Lucas Oil Stadium and Lambeau Field tied for the most
- 4:07Speaker 5: comfortable seats. Forecast today, partly cloudy with a chance of
- 4:10Speaker 5: a thunderstorm later. Highs around 90. That heat index near
- 4:14Speaker 5: 100 again. Right now, 75 in Laurel.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Now that you've got the news, top stories at the
- 4:19Speaker 3: top of the hour. Hang out because we want to
- 4:21Speaker 3: check in on you and how you are doing with
- 4:24Speaker 3: your morning mindset. And some words that might help you
- 4:27Speaker 3: get through today. Maybe might turn the week around.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You never know.
- 4:31Speaker 3: But we'll all spend some time in thought coming up.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You know you can count on 97.1 Wash FM for
- 4:39Speaker 3: Washington's variety from the 80s, 90s, and today we are.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 4:43Speaker 3: You can also count on us to take some time
- 4:45Speaker 3: to focus on you with your morning mindset.
- 4:47Speaker 5: This is where we find a quote and share it
- 4:49Speaker 5: with you. Maybe it'll inspire or motivate you when you
- 4:52Speaker 5: hit a little bit of an obstacle today.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You know, potholes that life just randomly throws into the
- 4:57Speaker 3: road of life. Toni Morrison reminds you and I this
- 5:02Speaker 3: morning that you are your best thing. Toni Morrison, you
- 5:07Speaker 3: are your best thing. Now, I know it sounds very you-centric, me-centric, whatever,
- 5:13Speaker 3: but here's the thing. You'll protect your time, your family,
- 5:17Speaker 3: your work. You'll protect everybody you love, right? Today, remember,
- 5:21Speaker 3: there's one more thing worth protecting, and that is you.
- 5:27Speaker 3: You are your best thing. Protect yourself today.
- 5:31Speaker 2: All right?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Only you can do it. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Hope
- 5:35Speaker 3: that helps.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Need it again? Find it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Get us on social. You'll see it there. Check the
- 5:40Speaker 3: stories on Instagram, also Facebook. And, of course, you can
- 5:44Speaker 3: also reach out to us at Toby at ChiliPage, WashFM.com.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Hang out because coming up in just a few minutes
- 5:51Speaker 3: this morning.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Move over, goat yoga. Now there's an organic cow spa
- 5:56Speaker 4: that's open.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Moo.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Good morning, Herndon. Route 28 is part of your plan
- 6:04Speaker 3: this morning. Your coffee is still hot, which means you're
- 6:06Speaker 3: ahead of the game. It's 97.1 Watch FM. Toby and Chili,
- 6:10Speaker 3: in the morning, let's talk about cows.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Yeah, forget about goat yoga.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Now there's an organic cow spa that just opened up
- 6:19Speaker 5: at a farm in Maine. This is where humans can
- 6:22Speaker 5: enjoy wellness treatments inspired by the pampered lives of organic
- 6:27Speaker 5: dairy cows. So for $ 120... Toby, you get to cuddle
- 6:32Speaker 5: with cows. There's some meditation walks involved, massages with peppermint aromatherapy,
- 6:37Speaker 5: scalp treatments, and even some hoof care, you know, for
- 6:40Speaker 5: your feet.
- 6:42Speaker 3: What happens if the cow goes mad cow, like doesn't
- 6:47Speaker 3: want to be cuddled?
- 6:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 5: The only time you're really interacting with the cow is
- 6:51Speaker 5: for cuddling. And to your point, I have a feeling
- 6:53Speaker 5: that they're choosing specific cows. They may not mind the cuddle.
- 6:57Speaker 5: And by the way, this is less about pretending to
- 6:59Speaker 5: be a cow. It's more about embracing the fresh air,
- 7:01Speaker 5: the sunshine and the low stress lifestyle that organic cows
- 7:04Speaker 5: supposedly enjoy.
- 7:06Speaker 3: As they stand out in the grass and they chew
- 7:09Speaker 3: on cud.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Do you know what has always kept me from either
- 7:12Speaker 5: the goat yoga or even something like this? Maybe I'll
- 7:15Speaker 5: get some hate for this, but I have never, ever
- 7:19Speaker 5: enjoyed the smell of farm animals. It makes me sick
- 7:22Speaker 5: to my stomach. So I cannot, I cannot. Like when
- 7:25Speaker 5: I go to like the Montgomery County Fair and I'm
- 7:28Speaker 5: trying to pet the cows and whatnot, I can't do
- 7:31Speaker 5: it for more than a few seconds. So this would
- 7:32Speaker 5: not be relaxing. See, I grew up around it, so
- 7:35Speaker 5: I'm kind of used to it. It smells kind of
- 7:36Speaker 5: like ammonia and hay.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And that's... Really, all I have to say about that,
- 7:41Speaker 3: it's not exactly my favorite.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Well, then you can go ahead and sign up for this.
- 7:43Speaker 2: No, no.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Because like I said, Chili, I don't know about these cows.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I don't want them to get mad. Goats, they, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 3: have those horns. And if they get a little, you know, too.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Gruff as it were.
- 7:55Speaker 4: They're the little baby goat yoga, baby goats. But yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Well, if they were baby cows, I might be okay
- 7:59Speaker 2: with that.
- 8:00Speaker 4: No, they all smell the same.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Look, you can't have one without the other, you know.
- 8:06Speaker 3: cows humans goats it's all yoga anyway if you want
- 8:12Speaker 3: to read more about this because somebody should start one
- 8:15Speaker 3: of these uh yoga places out in uh i don't
- 8:17Speaker 3: know poolsville or maybe across the river out there past
- 8:22Speaker 3: dallas whatnot toby and chili page wash fm.com for more
- 8:26Speaker 3: the news is on the way top stories at the
- 8:28Speaker 3: top of the hour chili amar what are you working.
- 8:31Speaker 5: On As we head into Labor Day weekend, it seems
- 8:34Speaker 5: that a lot of Americans aren't even sure what the
- 8:36Speaker 5: holiday's about.
- 8:38Speaker 4: I'll explain in just a few.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yo, Nick and Kevin coming to town at the end
- 8:43Speaker 3: of September.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Do you want to go?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Because we can get you in at 97.1 Wash FM
- 8:47Speaker 3: with Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Just follow at Wash FM on Instagram. And if you
- 8:52Speaker 5: want more details, go to washfm.com.
- 8:54Speaker 4: 97.1 WASH FM, Washington.
- 8:58Speaker 1: An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories, top of
- 9:02Speaker 1: the hour.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Crossing guards are back at 11 Fairfax County high schools today.
- 9:07Speaker 5: We've got the latest on that story and others on
- 9:10Speaker 5: the way with Toby and Chili in the morning on
- 9:13Speaker 5: 97.1 Wash FM.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Top stories, top of the hour.
- 9:20Speaker 5: The president is warning of devastating consequences if Iran retaliates
- 9:25Speaker 5: after U.S. Central Command launched fresh airstrikes on Iranian targets yesterday,
- 9:30Speaker 5: saying Iran's Revolutionary Guard had been targeting shipping and U.S.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Troops in the region.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Crossing guards are back at 11 Fairfax County high schools.
- 9:40Speaker 5: This after a car hit a 16-year-old walking to South
- 9:43Speaker 5: Lakes High School yesterday morning. The teen was not seriously hurt,
- 9:46Speaker 5: but police say the crash happened... at an entrance that
- 9:49Speaker 5: never had a guard, and by dismissal yesterday, one was
- 9:53Speaker 5: back on the post. Car thefts are up 22% in
- 9:57Speaker 5: Montgomery County this year, even as they drop nationwide. Police
- 10:01Speaker 5: blame tech-savvy thieves cloning key fob signals and say that
- 10:05Speaker 5: instructions are spreading fast on social media. The National Park
- 10:09Speaker 5: Service has shut down stretches of the National Mall between
- 10:12Speaker 5: 3rd and 14th Streets for months of turf and tree repairs.
- 10:17Speaker 5: The closures all started yesterday, and they will run through
- 10:20Speaker 5: January 24th.
- 10:22Speaker 4: D.C.
- 10:22Speaker 5: 's new pro volleyball team finally has a name, the D.C.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Flight. It's set to take the court.
- 10:29Speaker 5: For the first season in 2027, playing in a non-traditional D.C.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Venue.
- 10:34Speaker 5: While the team's colors and logo will debut later this month.
- 10:40Speaker 5: And a new survey finds a lot of Americans are
- 10:42Speaker 5: pretty fuzzy on Labor Day.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Only two-thirds knew.
- 10:45Speaker 5: It falls on September 7th this year, and about one
- 10:48Speaker 5: in five think it honors the founding of labor unions. Now,
- 10:52Speaker 5: for the record, it actually celebrates the contributions of American workers.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Forecast today, partly cloudy with a chance of a thunderstorm.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Highs around 90.
- 11:01Speaker 5: That heat index near 100.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Right now, 75 in Lorton.
- 11:06Speaker 2: That's the news. Toby and Tilly in the morning.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Top stories at the top of the hour coming up.
- 11:12Speaker 3: One of your talkbacks. This was interesting. Wait until you hear.
- 11:18Speaker 3: this message that we were left. That's still to come
- 11:21Speaker 3: this morning.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 11:23Speaker 3: And Bowie have a safe trip to Annapolis on 50.
- 11:26Speaker 3: It's 97.1.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Wash up.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Then we're tell me in Chile in the morning, we
- 11:29Speaker 3: get talk back messages. And this morning we got an
- 11:34Speaker 3: interesting one.
- 11:35Speaker 5: So Lacey in Germantown was sharing a little parenting debate.
- 11:39Speaker 4: She's having, Hey guys, I will listen to you all
- 11:41Speaker 4: the time.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I love your show. They get fans, but I have
- 11:45Speaker 2: a little debate for you.
- 11:46Speaker 6: I know you guys like to do great debates.
- 11:48Speaker 1: My husband and I are trying to figure out what
- 11:51Speaker 1: we should do.
- 11:52Speaker 2: He wants to pay the kids for good grades.
- 11:54Speaker 4: And I'm like, absolutely not. Do we pay kids for
- 11:56Speaker 4: good grades now? Is that what we do?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Sounds like a good idea to the former student in me.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Did you incentivize.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Your daughter, by the way?
- 12:06Speaker 3: No, I didn't really need to because she was pretty motivated,
- 12:10Speaker 3: you know, and then when the pandemia hit, she pumped
- 12:13Speaker 3: the gas, skipped a grade and then graduated early.
- 12:15Speaker 5: So So I think if your child doesn't have that self-motivation,
- 12:19Speaker 5: incentives are not a bad idea. So for me, it's
- 12:21Speaker 5: a case by case basis. And by the way, it
- 12:23Speaker 5: kind of does prepare you for the real world, because
- 12:25Speaker 5: in the real world, you do get bonuses for achieving
- 12:28Speaker 5: certain goals.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Right. So it's not that far off.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Upon reason and belief, you would incentivize your son with
- 12:35Speaker 3: with cash. You would pay him for grades.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Money doesn't speak to him, but something else might.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And yes, I'm a big fan of incentivizing.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Here comes Maya in D.C. Good morning, Maya. Pay the
- 12:46Speaker 3: kids for the grades. What do you think?
- 12:48Speaker 8: Oh, that's a tricky one, because when I was growing up,
- 12:50Speaker 8: if I got a good report card, my grandpa used
- 12:53Speaker 8: to give me a dollar.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Seems to me things might have been a bit simpler
- 12:56Speaker 2: back then.
- 12:57Speaker 5: You know what?
- 12:57Speaker 8: I think in today's current day and age, there's really
- 13:01Speaker 8: no reason to do that anymore. I know that might
- 13:03Speaker 8: sound crazy. You know, kids already have a lot going
- 13:06Speaker 8: for them. And I think just giving them an incentive
- 13:09Speaker 8: to have good grades, they should be able to do
- 13:12Speaker 8: that on their own. They shouldn't need an incentive to
- 13:14Speaker 8: want to learn, get good grades and, you know, become
- 13:17Speaker 8: more knowledgeable.
- 13:19Speaker 2: You're right.
- 13:19Speaker 5: They should want to learn, but it's a lot harder
- 13:22Speaker 5: for those who are in like elementary or middle school
- 13:24Speaker 5: to understand the importance.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Facts. Maya, thank you for jumping in this morning.
- 13:29Speaker 7: 866-927-4361.
- 13:30Speaker 3: So the debate is on this morning. Should we be
- 13:35Speaker 3: paying our kids for good grades?
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yes. No, there is no right or wrong opinion.
- 13:41Speaker 3: We just want to hear your opinion because you are
- 13:44Speaker 3: a part of the conversation this morning. Things decent on
- 13:47Speaker 3: Route 7 at Falls Church?
- 13:49Speaker 5: Good.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Thanks for waking up with Toby and Tilly in the morning,
- 13:52Speaker 3: 97.1 Wash FM. So this morning, we're talking about a
- 13:55Speaker 3: talkback message that we received. And by the way, if
- 13:59Speaker 3: you ever have anything on your mind that you need
- 14:00Speaker 3: us to help with, hit us with a quick talkback.
- 14:02Speaker 3: It's easy if you're signed into your iHeart app.
- 14:05Speaker 5: Lacey left us the message. Basically, she and her husband
- 14:08Speaker 5: are debating whether to pay their kids for good grades.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Pretty sure they're not the only family in the DMV
- 14:15Speaker 3: having that discussion as we send the kids back to
- 14:18Speaker 3: school over the last couple of weeks. It's 97.1 Wash
- 14:20Speaker 3: FM at 866-927-4361 to get into the conversation. Becca in
- 14:22Speaker 3: Centerville paying kids for grades.
- 14:29Speaker 7: So when I was a kid, my parents paid me
- 14:32Speaker 7: to get like to get good grades. And now I
- 14:35Speaker 7: feel like I have a complex. No, absolutely do not pay.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Your kids for that. Can you explain what you mean
- 14:39Speaker 4: by complex?
- 14:40Speaker 7: For me, I feel like what's what do they call
- 14:42Speaker 7: it today? Like the gifted kid thing. You know what
- 14:44Speaker 7: I mean? Or like I'm really good at everything. And
- 14:46Speaker 7: I feel like because I knew that I could get
- 14:49Speaker 7: money for that, like I wasn't focused on.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Like the learning part.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:53Speaker 4: I was focused on.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Like, oh, let me make sure that my grades are good.
- 14:56Speaker 7: so I can get something from it. And so that
- 14:58Speaker 7: like put a lot of pressure on me and stuff.
- 15:00Speaker 7: I wouldn't wish that on anybody. And like I was
- 15:02Speaker 7: a kid, so of course I didn't understand the complexity.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Of that at the time.
- 15:06Speaker 7: But now that I'm dealing with it as an adult,
- 15:08Speaker 7: I'm like, oh yeah, I wish that like that hadn't
- 15:11Speaker 7: happened to me.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Well, thank you so much for sharing your perspective with us. Yeah,
- 15:14Speaker 4: of course.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Big Eric and Aka Keek paying kids for grades. You
- 15:19Speaker 3: think it's a good idea?
- 15:20Speaker 2: I think it's a great idea. Tell them you.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Want me to do something.
- 15:23Speaker 7: I need cash.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Hold on now. Let's not get it twisted. You're not
- 15:28Speaker 5: going to get paid to do things that are expected,
- 15:31Speaker 5: all right?
- 15:31Speaker 3: I don't know, Chili. Cash rules everything around me.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, teach them early. Dollar, dollar bill, y'all.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Not in this economy.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Well, maybe someday. Someday. You got it.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Top stories at the top of the hour on the
- 15:47Speaker 3: way right around 710 this morning.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Chili, what's going on?
- 15:51Speaker 5: A new survey finds that most Americans now identify as

- 20:52Speaker 4: On a date. So that makes it the right answer.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Congrats to you.
- 20:56Speaker 2: And you don't need to cook.
- 20:57Speaker 3: I'd go out to dinner in Philadelphia when you and
