- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We are so glad you're here again. Lucas: Today we are tackling something super useful: ordinal numbers. Luna: Ordinal numbers? Like first, second, third? Lucas: Exactly. In Swahili, 'first' is kwanza. Say it with me: kwanza. Luna: Kwanza. Lucas: Perfect. 'Second' is pili. Pili. Luna: Pili. Lucas: Great. Then 'third' is tatu, same as the number three. Luna: Tatu. Lucas: Nne is 'fourth'. Luna: Nne. Lucas: Tano is 'fifth'. Luna: Tano. Lucas: Sita is 'sixth'. Luna: Sita. Lucas: Saba is 'seventh'. Luna: Saba. Lucas: Nane is 'eighth'. Luna: Nane. Lucas: Tisa is 'ninth'. Luna: Tisa. Lucas: And kumi is 'tenth'. Luna: Kumi. So all numbers from one to ten work the same for ordinals? Lucas: Yes, except for 'first' and 'second', which are kwanza and pili. The rest are just the numbers: tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa, kumi. Luna: Nice. So if I want to say 'the second bus', I'd say 'basi la pili'? Lucas: Exactly right. 'Basi la pili' means 'the second bus'. Luna: Okay, let me practice: Niko kwenye gari la tano. That means 'I am in the fifth car'. Lucas: Perfect, Luna. You got it. Now let's use them in a little scene. Imagine we are at a market and you want to buy the third mango. Luna: Nataka embe la tatu. I want the third mango. Lucas: Exactly. And if the seller has ten mangoes, maybe you want the tenth one: Nataka embe la kumi. Luna: Nataka embe la kumi. That sounds good. Lucas: You're doing great. Let's do a quick review. I say the English, you say the Swahili. 'First'. Luna: Kwanza. Lucas: 'Second'. Luna: Pili. Lucas: 'Third'. Luna: Tatu. Lucas: 'Fourth'. Luna: Nne. Lucas: 'Fifth'. Luna: Tano. Lucas: 'Sixth'. Luna: Sita. Lucas: 'Seventh'. Luna: Saba. Lucas: 'Eighth'. Luna: Nane. Lucas: 'Ninth'. Luna: Tisa. Lucas: 'Tenth'. Luna: Kumi. I think I've got it. This is really handy. Lucas: It is. Luna: Yeye ni mtu wa kwanza. And 'She is the second person' would be Yeye ni mtu wa pili. Lucas: Exactly. You've got it. Practice these ordinals when you're waiting in line or picking items. It'll stick fast. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all our listeners. See you next time! Lucas: Kwaheri. Keep practicing!
