- 0:00SPEAKER_00: No closer to me, I think.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Right now probably the toughest player of any game.
- 0:04SPEAKER_05: Black and lose up McCarty yes it is.
- 0:05SPEAKER_05: Derek blacked him with a foot to left.
- 0:13SPEAKER_05: Hello again.
- 0:14SPEAKER_05: What's up to another episode of Glove Zoff and Foresters Co.
- 0:19SPEAKER_05: Part of the Ice Guardian Network.
- 0:21SPEAKER_05: I am Darren McCarty and he is Joe Coaster.
- 0:25SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 0:26SPEAKER_05: And without further ado, our guest today, very excited about from Church Bridge, one of 900 people from Church Bridge, Saskatchewan, the one, the only, number 23, Kevin the Killer Kaminsky.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: What's up, killer?
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: How you doing, bud?
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, just been uh a great day here to be hanging out with all the boys.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: And uh uh it's an honor to be sitting here between you two guys at uh I think eight Stanley Cups and uh got like I said, I watched Joey and Saskatoon uh uh with the blades uh before I got there.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: And I said I've you know watched you guys uh win those cups and a lot of tilts, but uh a lot of nice goals as well.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Uh so it's it was it's it's an honor to be here.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: No, I we we really appreciate it.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: I think like how about a little geography lesson, boys, because I got two Saskabush boys right here, and you're talking Church Bridge, and you told me it's 900 people.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: And Joey says, Well, you know, Calvington and all this.
- 1:23SPEAKER_05: I'm thinking metropolis, and how many people in Calvin?
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: Calvington's 900 people, so there's not a lot of people, a lot of NHL players around there.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: I know you were just talking about it.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: We've got uh Wendell Kelly, we got uh Odoline Brothers, Lennock, who else?
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Polanic, Federko, yeah, all within a few miles of us, and now over by you, you've got Buckberger and Kelly Buckford from Langerburg, Jeff Rogers from uh Spy Hill, you got Theo Fleury from Russell, and then you got um oh gosh, I always forget his name.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: He's from uh uh just in Manitoba.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but he be Pat Falloon played with San Jose.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so just a whole bunch of so for us, like you know, big metropolitan or like I grew up in Leamington, which is you know was 12,000 people.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Like, how many is is there what's the biggest metropolis of the towns that you just mentioned Saskatchewan?
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Well, Yorkton would be I don't know.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: I think 20,000 now.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: 20,000.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: Okay, and that's about an hour, hour and a half away.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Close for you, half an hour for me, yep.
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: Okay, you guys have like a lot.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: Do you have like Target or Walmart or like grocery like big big chain or anything like that?
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: We got a co-op.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Co-op co-op.
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we got co-op.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: I'm just wondering how it is, and you wonder how these boys are so tough out there on the prairies, stuff like it.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: But you both ended up uh playing junior in Saskatoon.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Like, how how is that for like hometown, like home province?
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: Saskatoon is probably the nicest town in in Saskatchewan.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Great city.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: Probably 150,000, maybe.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Oh gosh, no, it's over close to 400.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: Oh, wow.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: So I haven't I haven't been there in 45 years.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: So, but it's a great place to play.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: They had a great hockey program.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: We had a lot of good teammates, and we had a lot of tough teams.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: I was lucky enough to play with Brownie and uh Daryl Clay.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: Daryl Stanley, too.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: Daryl Stanley, Wendell.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: So we left a bit of carnage and we left before Killer Conference.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: How many years after Joey was there and those guys did you come in?
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: What year did you come in?
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I come in in 86, 87.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: I left in 83.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, three years after that.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: And so what was it like?
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: I always I'm always interested too, and because you see all the videos and the way that the Western Junior Hockey League was.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, they they mandated the fact that you couldn't like have pregame skate at the same time because somebody go down, like like go down and steal the other team's net and then not let them practice with Pucks, or like that stuff's true, right?
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that stuff really happened.
- 4:01SPEAKER_05: Was it like wild a bit of the wild west back then?
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: You like you had to have these tough teams?
- 4:07SPEAKER_05: And did it mellow out more as got into the later 80s, or was it still like that?
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: Because that was more your era, right?
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Because wasn't that Dave Brown or yeah?
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, we were we had a tough team, we had a good team, but I I think it continued with you because Chaser, Twister, Chaser and Twister, Kerry Clark, and Corey Kosher, and you know, probably well, Kimball down in PA with uh Reed Simpson and Gord Krupke, which I think with you know, the great name.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: You know, so yeah, every team had at least about four guys that uh you know were um considered heavyweights or knew what they you know knew how to fight, yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: And so as as fighters, and and I think that the big thing, like as we get into uh like not just the NHL, but the minor league career, right?
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: Because you the the unbelievable that record, but did that prepare you?
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: Did the Western Hockey League prepare you to be the type of NHL pro that you want to be?
- 5:13SPEAKER_05: Especially especially physically.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Well, for sure.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I I think I always had that, it was always in me.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I like I said, I had that frick, I hated to lose, love to win attitude, and and I'll do whatever it takes, right?
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: And um, and I was always uh an always a scrappy person.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: And if I lost, well, I'm fighting someone, right?
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: And mostly my brother.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: And uh um, you know, and and then like I said, it just uh uh went you know carried on.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Like I like we used to go watch because I was on the Saskatoon Blades list, and we used to go to Regina, which was two hours away.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Used to watch these guys and Wendell and uh you know with the Pats.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: And again, the Pats had tough teams too, you know.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: It was it was uh it was a Jeff Crawford.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: He was like a man out there.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: Holy crap!
- 6:03SPEAKER_05: Is there was there a night off anywhere in the West?
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: No, like like you looking forward to that.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Not even in not even in uh your uh Saskatchewan hockey league, the junior league, right?
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: You and Brownie played together in New York.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: If you wanted to find a fight every night, you could find a fight.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's um that's unbelievable.
- 6:26SPEAKER_05: So did you play any successful teams with in junior?
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: Like just like did you get to any finals or the the three years that I played junior?
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Um we lost to medicine hat the first two years, and they went on to win back-to-back uh you know champion was that Trevor Linden Trevor Linden and uh Robbie DeMaio and Kushner and and all that.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Um and obviously the late uh Barry Melrose was the coach there, so he won back to back with those guys.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: So whenever we went to Kelvington hockey school, we never lived that down.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Uh them winning, beating us in in the finals to uh go to Memorial Cup.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: So um what are you talking about?
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Guys of West, they let things go, don't they?
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Barry didn't.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Barry was one of a kind, man.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: He was uh uh well, obviously, what a great um coach, friend, uh person, but I don't know, he just had a Aurora about him.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Uh he brought the game of hockey into people's living rooms, and he just had a way of explaining it and uh the simplicity of it, but he was just uh what a great person that he was.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, uh, you know, he passed.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: Well, we lost the legend.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: We always said, Joey, that you should like so and I get the same feeling as like when you talked to me, he was like the the the bigger brother or the the big the big brother of all of us, yes, of all you guys pretty much the first one to make the NHL.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, there was someone back in the 50s, but we looked up to Barry.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: Oh, and we all just answered to Barry.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: We just kind of like little puppy dogs looking up at him, and uh yeah, he was he was a big brother to all of us, right?
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: Seemed to work out, yeah, seemed to work out, yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, and I know that uh coming in, I was I was um drafted in '92 as a 19-year-old, but I've heard you say this before about like because we ran in from 87 to 91, that group of junior kids that if you were 18 or younger, you had to go in the first three rounds.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: So that didn't made go an extra year, but it also enabled you to make that jump into the into the pros.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Now, you here we were going through numbers as far as like because I know my my minor league year, I played in Adirondack in '92, '93.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: You know, like I played with Gore Kropke there.
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: I played with Dennis Vial, Jim Cummins, Kirk Tomlinson, um, you know, Bob Bugner, you know, bunch, bunch of killer guys, and that I had 45 majors in my rookie year.
- 9:06SPEAKER_05: You said you played, what did you play 40 some games and have 34 majors, stuff like that?
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: You, my friend, you, how about that?
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: This is ridiculous, right?
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: Like I said, you could find five 45.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: This man not only had four, how many penny minutes?
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: 455.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Well, actually, I had 499 because I played seven more games in Halifax before I got sent to Fort Wayne comments.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: So I was 499.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: 499, and then, but listen to this stat 32 games in a row.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: This man dropped his gloves back to back to back, 32 consecutive games.
- 9:48SPEAKER_05: Probably a couple double fights in some of those, but and and back in the day, too, they didn't count 10 minute misconducts, only for three fights.
- 9:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you do an early fight, it's a game misconduct, and you get a 10.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what that's a lot of majors there.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's unbelievable.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Do you I think I had 45 fights in 56 games that year?
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Like, that's um, how'd you hold up?
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: I was just like an energizer bunny, man.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: I just kept on going and going, loved it, loved to do it.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Like it's you know, it just like where whatever league you're going to, you kind of got to establish yourself, right?
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: So you play that physicality part of the game.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: You you do what you got to do for the team, whether it's you know, to change the momentum.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Um, I remember we were playing in when I was with Washington, uh, I'll just go ahead a little bit, and we were down four to one.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: We were playing with Florida Panthers in Florida, and I've and we were just dead.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: And I went out and I fought Paul Loss and had a great tilt.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: And we came back and won 5-4.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: And Pat Peak, my roommate, scored the game winner.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: But Pat Peake said in his interview that uh I didn't win this game.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: I got to give credit to Kevin Kaminsky, who went out and fought Paul Loss and changed the momentum.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: And you know, we came back and and won the game, you know.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: So that's again, that's nice to see from those skilled guys that you get that they know they get you get they get we need the recognition too.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: It's funny you bring that up because we skate with Peker and the Red Wing alumni because he's in Detroit and stuff like that, and and he always has a big smile on his face whenever we run into you or whatever and says hi and stuff like that.
- 11:29SPEAKER_05: But it's you know, we we had uh Brad Hall on as our first interview, and um he's you know, as as a Hall of Famer and one of those all-stars, it's it's that appreciation that that's that's our payoff.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: Whereas that the guys that you serve, you know, and keep them protected, they appreciate it and they know it and and they have that, and that's what makes us fire up, you know, even more.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Right, 100%.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: I just like we could care less about the papers or in the papers your name or whatever, but when you get recognition from your teammates, that that means a lot uh right here, you know.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: That's the most complimentary uh you can that it can be.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: So after uh you set the tone like that, tell us about your championship season, Calder Cup, because there's a lot of players in that team that you and I both know, yeah, and uh that went on to have good Henichel careers as well.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Yes, very good.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: It was we were pretty stacked.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Ole Kolzig was our goalie, Byron Defoe was our backup, and uh so obviously Oli was MVP of the that year of playoffs when we won.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but we had uh the two Nelson brothers from PA, Todd Nelson, who's been a great coach wherever he's gone.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Is he in Grand Rapids right now?
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: No, he's in Pittsburgh.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: He he was assistant coach in Pittsburgh last year.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Um Jeff Nelson, who was I think one of our leading scorers, had 107 points that year.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Um Michelle Picard, uh back end.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: We had the old colonel, Brian Kern, uh Jason Woolley, which I think you guys know.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Goncher, well, Goncher came and called up.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he got called up.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: I think he only played three games.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: That's how much depth that we had.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I was like I said, uh guy named Noft?
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Laura Noft, yeah, yeah.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: Uh-pinger himself.
- 13:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, he's fixed it.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no way.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: And our good friend, Carrie Clark.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: And Sharky.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, just uh we were roommates in Portland, so we had uh oh boy, the first the first game in Providence.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: We both got hurt.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: He tore some tendons in his muscle fighting two guys.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: I blew out my knee.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Um so we did a lot of promotions in Portland uh when we were hurt, uh going to schools and uh maybe a little bit downtown and uh promoting promoting the pirates, right?
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it was it was a fun year, and uh, like I said, a lot of a lot of great uh, you know, Andrew Burnett, which I don't even think he got to play in playoffs, you know, which is crazy.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, what a what a career over a thousand.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: So yeah, we just uh we had a fantastic team and won uh the Portland or won the Calder Cup that year.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: What a what a you know it's a great memory.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: I guess you know, you guys know about the Stanley Cups, which winning's winning.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Winning's winning, right?
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: And and that's the was a highlight of my uh my career of one of them, right?
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: I'm sure it's the same sort of thing, right?
- 14:40SPEAKER_05: It's the stories that you have with the guys you brought up, you know, that that to this day, you know, keeps you connected.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: You guys know Mike Boback.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: I know Mike Boback.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was on that team too.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: What a player he was.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Freaking great skill.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I think he had seven points in one game in playoffs.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: I think it might be a record still.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it was uh it was it was just yeah, we had a great lineup, had a little bit of everything.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Hey everybody, welcome back to the fifth annual Joe Coaster Foundation for Children Golf Outing.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Thank you to our friends at Anheuser Busch for supplying the beer.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: We're getting ready to watch the Lions win their first Super Bowl this year, drinking the official beer, Bud Light.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: But today is about golf, great friends, and raising money for charity.
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: Cheers to everyone and thank you, Bud Light.
- 15:34SPEAKER_05: So do you remember your first game in the NHL um with Washington?
- 15:38SPEAKER_05: Like after after or or when you finally you know made it back up into the lineup or whatever like that.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Was it was it something that you did or was it you like you came in with that same attitude or the hole that they needed filled?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Well, you know what was uh kind of got my start there in Washington.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Um actually uh Dale Hunter got hurt.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: So I got uh the call up and uh yeah, I made uh made the best of it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Obviously, when Dale came back, I got sent back down to Portland, but um, you know, uh played 13 games, had five assists, and did a bunch of fighting and everything, and uh kind of kind of that's where it really started.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: And then the following year I made it.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, that it was the lockout year.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it just uh so I I could have stayed there in Washington, but I decided to go back to Portland to play.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: And then actually once the lockout got up, I was back in Washington for the next three years.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: So right.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: What are some of your great, what are your some of your fondest memories about playing in Washington?
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: Was it part of the game or any uh like good stories?
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: I I mean we had uh well, we had some toughness on there.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Craig Baruby was my line mate, uh Mike Eagles, uh you had Dale Hunter, you had Mark Tenorty.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it was just uh you know, uh I I really thought that uh we made a trade one year uh with Boston.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: So we got Bill Ranford, Adam Oates, and Rick Talkett.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: And I seen that on the on the TSN, whatever.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: So I called Chief and I go, Chief, did you see the trade?
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: He goes, We just got Ranford, Talkett, and Oates.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: He goes, really?
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: And I I really thought that was gonna be the year that we had an opportunity to win the cup, right?
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And that was 95?
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: I believe it was the year after the lockup.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: 95 was the lockup.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Um it was crazy.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Here's a little story.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Um, we were playing, we couldn't get by Pittsburgh though.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Pittsburgh would beat us freaking every year, and we had them down three games to one.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: And we were uh, I think it was the sixth game we were in Washington, and uh uh it was it went to overtime, it was just about two in the morning.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: It was like a seven, like seven periods of hockey, and I never got one shift, and I was hoping that remember Peter Klima did that in Edmonton.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was I was ready on time my skates, but I was like, come on, give me one shift, give me one shift.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: I want to pull Peter, pull a Peter Klima.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Never happened, but then actually Peter Nedved freaking ripped the wrist and uh won in overtime.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: So Paul Gardner, who was our assistant coach with Barry Trotz in Portland, I get a fax the next day and he goes, killer, just think one row above would have cost you a hundred bucks.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: Best seed playoff game, stuff like that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: You know, here in the enforcers code, obviously, you know, we got to take the time with talking to the guys that have lived in the pits and stuff like this.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: What did you have like your the mentality of how when you went out and fought?
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: Like, because you're not the biggest guy, right?
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: So was it was it always this like full speed ahead, sort of Tasmania, uh just sort of the way if you ever seen your your play, it's all arms and bodies and and stuff like that, or was there like a method to the madness?
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: It was just I I I made sure I was gonna be the first on the four check.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: I I wanted to get in, get that big hit, create their turnover, hope maybe cause some havoc and all that stuff.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: But again, just to kind of set the tone, man.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Like I'm gonna try and anticipate and get that big hit and punish, punish their D.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: And uh that that was my, you know, I love, like I said, don't get me wrong, because I, you know, I think I don't get enough credit for the skill that I had.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: And but I'm glad I had that other side of the game to me, because as I said, being in the top six or even top nine back then, uh these guys are freaking amazing.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, like Holly or whatever, you know, like these guys are freaking unbelievable.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Well, we had Peter Bondra, Michael Pavanka, you know, like these guys are freaking high-end freaking players.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And I'm kind of glad I had that other part of the game.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: So where I was able to stick around for just about four years, um, to play that other side to piss people off and fight.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: I I didn't care who it was, who I had to fight.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, five, nine, whatever.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: I I mean, I fought Francois Leroux, six, seven, you know, all I fought all the heavyweights, right?
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: You know, and it just uh I just did whatever it took to help my teammates or whatever, but also to stay there uh and stay in the NHL.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: So we talked earlier today about uh some of your fights, but there was one fight that you had to have.
- 21:07SPEAKER_04: You couldn't leave the game without fighting the big boy.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: Tell us about that guy.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Uh Proby, yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Um our guy.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: What I mean we're we're he was in Chicago and I knew he was getting a little bit older, right?
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: And and uh we're going in there, I had some family, whatever.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: And uh I was in my in my stall, I'm rocking back and forth, and I'm getting ready.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: And Ole Kolzig, who I roomed with the year before, says, Killer, are you all right?
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: I go, yeah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: I go, but tonight's the night.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: He goes, What do you mean, tonight's the night?
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I said, I'm going proby.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: He says, No, you're not.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: I said, Yes, I gotta say, I fought the legend.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I like I said, I watched a lot of fights, and I, you know, he was a lot of toe to toe.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: I think a good fighter is to stand in and take a punch and keep going and keep going right.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: And he was he was very entertaining.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: And um, so yeah, so he was cutting across a blue line.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: I went to go hit him.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: He kind of sidestepped me.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: I hit his arm, his stick went flying, and he said, You turned around.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: He said, You little fucker.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: So we ended up fighting over by the bench after that.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: And uh it wasn't the best fight, but I survived and uh I'm here to tell the story about it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: So so yeah, and I got like I said, I got to say I fought uh fought the legend because I I just loved the way he played, not only because of the fighting, but you know, he could play the game, man.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Freaking goal scorer, and man, he was he was unbelievable.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: So we talk about Proby all the time.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I never saw that side of what you how many other guys just had to fight Proby just to fight him.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: Oh, I mean, how to do it.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: There's so many.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: There's so many the best part, I saw Brian Burke do this interview of saying his tough guys, but the one most honorable thing about Proby is that he would never turn down a young guy.
- 23:12SPEAKER_05: You know, he's seen it like Dennis Bondby would tell me that, like Bushy, you know, all these guys, Paul Louse, when he was in Florida early on, like he they'd always knock.
- 23:22SPEAKER_05: And I my first year, so his last year in Detroit, you know, I see guys come knocking on the door all the time.
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: You know, the the smarter ones when he would want to sleep would just let him sleep, but not but but he would always oblige.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: You know, did you ever fight him?
- 23:37SPEAKER_05: Proby, yeah, he uh when he was in Chicago, um, and it wasn't I I actually cut him on the ear, but he said he freaking slapped Stevie in front of the batch in a pile.
- 23:50SPEAKER_05: So I I drilled him back and we sort of went.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: He went and uh I cut him for some stitches on his ear, and he was mad, like because we hung out in the summers and we're close.
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and he was mad at me for he was like, Mitch, why are you hit me?
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: You cut me like that.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: And I said, Why'd you punch Stevie in the head?
- 24:07SPEAKER_05: He's like, Oh, did I?
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: Like, total pro.
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 24:11SPEAKER_05: No, I didn't, dude.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: You know, and you know, like he would sort of black out, like doing stuff like this, and it was a scrum in front of the bench and Stevie's there, and he's just giving him, I don't even know if you knew it was Stevie or not, but it was like, no, um, that that would be and I like I always say, right?
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: Like, and there's certain guys, because you you didn't care and you your fearlessness to whatever else, but but it was it was like like guys like Joey who would literally could kill you and tried to kill you, stuff like this, where Proby was like he was more like a bear where he would like maul you, right?
- 24:47SPEAKER_05: Where where Joey's like a shark and he's trying to like freaking like kill you and stuff like that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: You had to be aware, like because it it didn't matter, but the fearlessness of of not doing this.
- 24:59SPEAKER_05: Was there ever a guy for you?
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: Like it was like pack my lunch, or like you knew you were in for it, like not that you weren't gonna do it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: That's out of the like we know we're gonna do it, but it's just like man, I gotta, I gotta no, you know what?
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: I I just like yeah, it didn't it didn't matter to me.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: You know what the crazy thing was is like I've never fought any blades before.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I'd like Chaser and Jody, Wendell, like I've never never fought.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: I remember one time we're playing Hartford when Chaser was in Hartford, and and um I could hear because I was going after um the other meal.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Oh, Jocelyn.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Jocelyn.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: And Chaser's in the killer, don't do it, don't do it.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: And I I finally got a hold of Jocelyn and I freaking ragged all of them from the behind the net all the way to the blue line, just uppercutting them, and and Chaser's just shaking his head at me.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: He goes, What are you doing, killer?
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Well, I just have to, I gotta do what I gotta do, man.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: You know, and but uh yeah, I just it it didn't matter like who it was.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean, if I had to do it or change the momentum, or someone takes a cheat shot on Bondra or whoever, well, I'm I'm gonna be there, you know, and that's just uh kind of the way I way I played.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: Like I just I didn't care about my body or whatever.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: I just had to do whatever it took to stay there.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Football is back, and something big is coming on September 2nd.

- 27:24SPEAKER_04: I think that's pretty interesting you said that, because I'm thinking back.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know that I ever fought a Saskatoon Blade.
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: Oh no, I fought Twister.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: But I guys I didn't play with.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 27:37SPEAKER_04: But much younger than I was.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: But uh I know the old boys, we didn't uh go after each other very often or ever.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Chaser.
- 27:44SPEAKER_05: Unless unless needed.
- 27:46SPEAKER_05: There's sort of like there's part of the code unneeded.
- 27:48SPEAKER_05: Part of the code, right?
- 27:50SPEAKER_05: It would be also to how different guys, if it was gonna go down, well, you're gonna pair off here.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: You go fight, I'll go fight the blade, you're gonna fight the other guy.
- 28:02SPEAKER_05: You know, like there is sort of people don't understand, there is a like looking at the lineup and going, you know, because I've had you know, Joey say to me before, don't fight him tonight, and don't fight him.
- 28:14SPEAKER_05: And it's like, you know, whatever, like that.
- 28:16SPEAKER_05: If anybody's fighting them, I am or picking, you know, different things for different ways.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: There's if you if you had the choice.
- 28:24SPEAKER_05: Sometimes the game gets out of hand to not do that, but but that that's a good point.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: Todd Gill, good friend of ours, played for the wings.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: I ran into him this summer and I asked, for some reason, we always fought.
- 28:37SPEAKER_04: I'm like, why did you always come after me?
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: He said, because Proby and Wendell fought.
- 28:41SPEAKER_04: I would never have to fight Proby because I knew him.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: So I was stuck with you.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: And you would never fight like and I would never fight Wendell, right?
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: So that you don't think about it until you're 60 years old.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: Like, what the hell happened?
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: But that's sort of like like a layer of the appendix of the code, right?
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: That we know about because of the way that we were sort of raised, that is sort of lost.
- 29:05SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like the chapters that we don't even think about, but yeah, it just sort of plays out that way.
- 29:11SPEAKER_05: Or guys that you fought, like, do you know the guy that you fought the most?
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: And but you probably fought him in junior, you fought him again in the minors, you fought him, you know, like like all that stuff.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: I know that goes on.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, do you even know your guy?
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: Oh I wouldn't I don't know.
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: I know Brad May and I fought like five or six times, um, which is a light, and then that's out of like you know, respect of you know, being the same sort of player and and and where where it falls in line of trying to be like exactly that, because in the the enforcers code or whatever like that, and we've talked about it to have Joey on the bench leaning over the anticipation of death waiting for him to come out is is lets him off the hook, like Scotty told him, if he's sitting in the penalty box, but it's also there's another one where guys like you and I who are gonna be out there on a on a shift that aren't gonna back away from anything.
- 30:13SPEAKER_05: So it's almost like the the ball's coming out, anyways.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: It's how do you want it served?
- 30:18SPEAKER_05: And usually you'd rather it serve from me than from him or or whatever else, but you're gonna like and the guy doesn't want to fight, so you know what you're gonna do?
- 30:27SPEAKER_05: You're gonna light him up on a we were watching some of the hits earlier, you know.
- 30:31SPEAKER_05: And you you know, the one thing is that that I've heard you say is like Wendell Clark was your favorite, well, favorite player, whatever, and you throw your body around like Wendell Clark, and it's just all arms and all legs, and you put everything into it no matter what it is, right?
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: It's gotta be that Saskatoon.
- 30:51SPEAKER_05: That that that's what it is.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: You said you adored Wendell, yes, yeah, growing up and watching them.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, like so playing with the Blazers and then watching, you know, you guys uh with the blades.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Uh it was freaking it was unbelievable.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: Like such a good skater.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: He was playing D back then, yeah, right.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: Like I remember you started out D.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as a D.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Well, things you learn today.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Well, my he he this one guy thought he had him beat wide, and when he'll just started crossing over, and he just grabbed him and just then he used his whole body, his legs, and just hocked them into the boards.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: It was it was crazy, like the explosiveness of how he used to hit guys, like especially coming around the net or whatever, like that.
- 31:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right through you and stuff, you know, like the hurt.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: So um you ran into some injury problems that that ended your career, unfortunately, a little too little too soon.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: No, obviously retired due to concussions.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: You know, I've whatever, I think I counted up 19.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, the one which I wasn't concussed or knocked out, I guess, was the Peter and Edvet shot that hit me right here.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Um, 90 miles an hour dead on and shattered my whole right side of my face.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: I got two plates, 12 screws, um, 140 stitch, and uh, lost a little bit of vision.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know that one, like I said, I wasn't knocked out, but man, did that one ever hurt?
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, freaking there was blood everywhere.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: The puck bounced out of the out of out of the glass, out of the out of the rink.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Um the crazy thing was the all the bumps in the ambulance going to the hospital, frick did it kill.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: And then I had to sit there for like three hours.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: They were waiting for the plastic surgeon to come in.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And I told the nurse, okay, like three hours, I need some meds, man.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Like I'm freaking hurt.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: I can I'm a lot of pain tolerance, but I need some meds.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: And finally they shot me up.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: And uh, finally the doctor came and then did I don't know.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: I just woke up and everything was done in the morning.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that one was that the end?
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: No, no, and then I actually that happened October 23rd.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: I came back.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: I was playing in Las Vegas, and that's when Peter Nedville was holding out.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: He was playing with us.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: I was going to the net and when he hit me.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh I came back February 5th, and then uh I signed the next year.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: I signed in Providence, and then I got traded to Orlando.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: And in Orlando, a guy was coming around the net with his head down, and I was ready to just lay him out.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: And he seen me at the last second and threw up his elbow and boom, hit me in the jaw.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: And I was trying to get into the tell me box, not on the bench.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: I didn't know where I was or anything.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: And and uh that was uh well actually I was told on my birthday, March 13th, that uh I had an appointment that day, and said doctor said you're done if you ever want to remember your kids.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: So that had to be pretty tough.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I was on I was it was I was in a dark place then.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Um I was only uh uh I was sleeping during the day, up all night.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: I was on medication for just about three years.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Um and even when I got the coaching job in Cincinnati with Babcock, I went and seen another neurologist and she put me on some different meds, and that's kind of when I started to slowly feel getting better.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Because I like I couldn't exercise every time I exercised, you know, your blood level and frick, I'd get headaches all the time.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: But you know, um with that, I mean it's been it's been pretty good.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Like I the headaches are you know are probably just regular headaches now.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Like there's no no problems.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: I even I got I see the doctor quite a bit from my eye, it's getting worse, but um, you know, it it could have been a lot worse, or you know, we you hear of a lot of concussions and and some a lot of concussions back in our era, wasn't there?
- 35:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and like like some some ones like you would say that you know, but how about the ones that you don't?
- 35:08SPEAKER_05: Right or the ones that aren't diagnosed to that or whatever.
- 35:11SPEAKER_05: Is there anything, I guess, like you know, now we're sort of on the subject of any advice to anybody who might end up going through something like that?
- 35:21SPEAKER_05: And I know it's a dark time, and we all have different stories about the, you know, sometimes the end of the career, but what was it?
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: Because it sounds like you did due diligence to help get yourself and get to the right doctor or get out of that dark place to be able to stay in the game.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: And I think that we want to talk about the coaching part of getting back into coaching because you're like your mind for the hockey or whatever.
- 35:47SPEAKER_05: If anybody who's ever talked to you, like you you have a great hockey mind of seeing it and stuff like that.
- 35:53SPEAKER_05: But just as far as like, was there something that maybe or even now you would go back and tell that Kevin that was in that dark place at the beginning of you know, pat on the back for job well did, or the kid that is out there that might have to go through it?
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: Well, it's crazy because I've obviously coaching junior hockey, there's concussions and and these kids want to try and get back right away.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: And I said, nope.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: I said, we gotta follow the concussion protocol uh until your headaches and symptoms are all gone.
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: You're you're not even stepping on the ice.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Uh and then it's that slowly progress, right?
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Where you ride the bike maybe a little bit and go for a light skate until there's no symptoms, right?
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and I went through some mental health stuff here this year, and I left uh my team uh a little bit earlier, and um and I had a I had great support.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: Uh a bunch of the boys uh were calling me, making sure I was okay.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: And then I Chaser must have heard he called me and and I told him what was going on, and and then all of a sudden uh we got off the phone and next thing you know, the NHLPA called me and said, Hey, we are gonna set you up with the therapist and to go uh you know, go get help and and talk about it and all that stuff.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Um so it it it was great.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and I I like I said, I think you just you know, we we can't keep everything inside.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: And I I was that way in my whole life, probably still am a little bit to this day, but but to go open up to you know a therapist, um, I don't know, it just every session that I had kept on feeling, you know, better about myself.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, so it was great help uh that way.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: I was seeing another guy, uh Bob Raybrook in in Saskatoon was a mental health coach.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, and then like I said, the boys were always calling me, making sure I was okay.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, that's and I think that's what whether it's the NHL or whatever league you're in, I think they got to do a better job of you know keeping tabs on these kids and and and the people because you know what it can lead to, and and we don't want to see that anymore, you know.
- 38:07SPEAKER_05: We've seen it, we've seen it seen it too much, and I think that the fact that you or all of us who would have been through something, you know, is is talk about it because we come from the generation where you know it was like suck it up and and and and not do it, but that now that's not okay because what matters is exactly you know, and Chaser's a huge, huge part of kicking it off, you know, with with our show and then with the ice guardians, but it's about the locker room, the boys being together, and how do we serve each other now like we did back then because the love is still there, and and and it's even more now, I think, because you know, we're all part of the same big team.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: You know what I'm saying?
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: I know when we get to you know go to Moncton or go do the alumni stuff or whatever, being around.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: And I mean, we had an absolute riot this year.
- 39:00SPEAKER_05: We you know, and you and I are the sober ones over there, but we're laugh laughing as much as anybody else.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: Just a bunch of idiots, and you realize, you know, this is your these are your guys, and you know, you look at some guys like you're talking about, are good.
- 39:15SPEAKER_05: We're at the age where you know we're gonna lose.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: But guys, the guys we hated, yeah, are now our teammates, right?
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Like you said, the alumni is the team.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: It's uh I mean, like I ran into Rob Ray.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: I never even knew the man, but I fought him a whole bunch of times.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: Right, yeah, we're friends 100%.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Even you and Claude at that point.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: We're all on the same page now.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: They retired and that's back after each other.

- 39:39SPEAKER_05: You know, they can't that no matter what, that's the way it can't end.
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: We can't stop the guys that are suffering, like then like Kelly and and the the disease and the stuff that that has happened.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: We gotta be proactive in that, but we can't have it where guys are taking themselves out.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's just like enough to give me chills right now, but enough and enough.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: But um, just before we wrap up, like coaching, like you said, to be, you know, to be able, like, is that the passion of yours?
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: And do you look look to get back into it?
- 40:10SPEAKER_05: I see you got a selects hockey jersey on, or are you doing stuff with the the kids, or yeah, you know what?
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: So I coached like 14 years pro, and I think I coached uh 13 years of junior hockey.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: And um now I'm coaching uh new academy with Mark Lepke, uh Fun Motors, and um he he started an academy with uh Shane Endicott who played in Pittsburgh and all that stuff, and two great uh two great people to work for.

- 40:50SPEAKER_02: You know, a couple of the kids uh off the U13 team played at the BRIC tournament uh with the Saskatchewan Pats this year, so like they're they're they're good, you know.

- 42:12SPEAKER_02: And he used to do the games for the Calgary Flames, right?
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and in Quebec, the one time I freaking fought Ron Stern and give it to him.
