- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Hi everybody, this is Frankie.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: And this is Johnny.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And welcome to The Conversations We Never Had.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: So, Johnny, uh You turned 18 this month.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Um well, first of all, what well yeah, well you turned 18 this month.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Uh how does it feel?
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: What's new?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean, same habits, the same stuff, so nothing really has changed.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Um I guess pun intended, same habits, right?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: We got atomic habits, James Clear.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: There's a plug for for James.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Incredible book, number one New York Times bestseller.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Um what's been going on in your life?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Um nothing much, just basketball.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Season's about to start, so I'm excited.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And um I'm captain of the team, so I got so much uh got a little bit of pressure on me, but it's good.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Pressure's good.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Pressure builds champions.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: So uh it's election time.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Uh you'll be voting for the first time this week.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: So uh what is that like for you?
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: What does it feel like?
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Uh no politics, just want to know about like what does it feel like to be a first-time voter?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Um, it's cool because you know, you get to have your input on on a certain person, and I feel like the reason they did the age 18s, because that's when someone's, I think, immature enough to notice the differences between the two parties.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Um and and honestly, it's not really about the party, it's just about what you believe in.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So that's that's how I go.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And I think I would defer on the on the ready, but yeah, that that's a conversation for another day.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: What confuses you?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Well, some some people or some 18-year-olds I feel like are at that maturity level that they they are they're ready.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But there's others that of course um are not.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: No, they don't even pay attention.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: So but what confuses you about is there anything that confuses you uh where did what have you learned about voting?
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: What uh where have you learned anything?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: At school, at home, on I mean at home kind of only basically um at school they don't really teach us about about that stuff.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: They don't talk about like they talk about elections and stuff, of course, but they don't talk about voting and no on how to research or look up stuff.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: I don't remember when I was really it's been you know only like a couple years.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Um so what do you think what do you think people should know that they don't know?
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Like w do you think you're you you're ready to cast a vote?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like you have to be you have to be really aware of of the people running and and honestly, I I know a couple of people, but I don't know everybody, and I mean most people out there don't know everybody, they just vote for their party.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Um which like I said, I mean honestly what you believe in is I think what you should vote in.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That's just my opinion.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Um just like what I believe in and and how you see that person, uh if they're fake, if they're not, like just based off your beliefs.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So uh for the people I know, I mean, I'm gonna vote for what I believe in.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And for the people I don't know, I gotta look more into it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: So okay, so let's stay there because I I think most people would agree on that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And now I I'm gonna show this, like I want you to be open and honest, like the people who are running for office, they know what you want to hear.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: So, how do you know that they're being honest?
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Like, that they're really believing what it is that they say they believe in.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, body language.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Um body language, uh going to see them face to face in person.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Um if you have a chance and and you're free, uh me and my dad have gone to a couple and it's like kind of these little tiny rallies, right?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I would say.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, you get to see their actual who they truly are in in front of you and and the type of person that they are, and you could tell by their actions and and their and their body language.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: So okay, no, I'm I I'm glad you said that last part because at first you mentioned body language, and well, most people are just watching them like on a screen, like and they're in person, you know, they're doing the the the regular thing and and you know, like they know what they're doing, they're masters at that.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: So, what you're saying is that you felt something different when you've been in person.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Uh good, bad, both.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, of course.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: I mean on online, uh what I mean, watching them on TV is is just basically words.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: You could see them, but you don't really it's basically like half of them right here.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: You don't see like you can see their facial expressions kind of, but it's also on a screen, so it's completely different.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Um you think it's important?
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on this?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Like, um, because they they have like a and this is the truth.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Every politician, depending on what party you choose, there's like here, memorize the script.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: They give you a script.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: If you're a Republican, they give you the Republican script.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: They give you Democrat, and this is like a big problem.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: That's not a conversation for today.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Um, we're gonna be switching gears in a second.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: And Democrat, they give you a script.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: You memorize a script, more or less, you say it in your own words, and that's who you are.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So there's questions that are not on the script.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: So, how important is it to get to those questions that are not on the script?
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And what do you think?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And if you don't have an answer, that's okay too.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: What do you think um you can get out of a question that's like not in the Republican or the Democratic like playbook?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, that bring when you don't when you ask a question like that, it shows like that they you put them on the spot.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And when you put somebody on the spot, they gotta answer real because they don't know what else to answer.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: They gotta answer with what they what they think or what they believe in or what they know.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, it really puts them on the spot and it it gives you a real answer.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So if whenever you go to these places, I mean if you go to a rally or whatever, go in with some research on that person so you know the basics and and of what they know, and ask something that they that they haven't talked about online or that's not out there, so that you could actually get a better feel for it.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And how important is it to actually go to one of these events?
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Because, like, this is the thing and and this is like really important.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, we spent uh more time here than I than I thought we would.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Uh there's certain things in life that we just think we know.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Because we we've done it, so we think, you know, uh like relationships, right?
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Like, oh well, you know, um I don't need to learn about relationships.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, like I saw my parents, or this person does this, and but there's certain things that you have to actually be in the rooms, in person.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Feel the the energy, yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Feel the how important do you think energy is?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: I think the most important thing when you walk into a room is energy.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Uh where focus goes, energy flows, and and if you walk into a room and the energy is dead, your energy is gonna be dead too.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Uh it's just like when somebody's negative, uh it's easier for everybody to get negative than when one person's positive for everybody to be positive.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna talk about that in another section.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: There's some good stuff there for how to switch energy, like especially now that you're you know Captain, you know what I mean?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I gotta hype everybody up and have them on the same page as me.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Uh so last question on the on this area.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: What do you feel should be better explained to people when it comes to voting elections?
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Well, a two-part question.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: And then we'll we'll switch gears.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: And uh words it that yeah, what do you feel is better explained?
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Let's start there.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, in in schools, I feel like you don't really like have to talk about the voting aspect because honestly in in high school seniors are the only people that could vote, and it's not even all of them.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Um but I feel like every election you should have you should give those students like a base knowledge of of what those people are are running for or they or their beliefs and stuff, just so people know uh you know who's controlling the state or uh the country, who whatever it is.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And um what was your question?
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: How do I better explain?
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Should be better explained.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how can they better explain?
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I I challenge you on that.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I disagree.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Um I think it's really important, even though people aren't ready to vote, at some point they're going to vote.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that people need to be better equipped because if none of us ever had any like elections, we all vote.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: They're the leaders of our elections, as you mentioned, our city, our county, our state, our our federal elections.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Most people think that the main elections, like Washington, DC, is like the most important place, and it's really important, but your county elections, your state elections, the people that are closest to you, like that's where this all started.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what matters most.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And most people don't know that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I don't think I know, I can say this with certainty, that it is extremely important that we teach our kids about the importance of elections and what elections mean and how to really learn because it's almost like you gotta for what let's say to get a car, it's like, okay, well, you know, here's your license.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Like, figure it out along the way.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Like, like everything is almost should be a preparation.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Because if nothing, what is ultimately school for?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: And and that's the transition that we're going to now.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Because that's uh I believe firmly a lot of things in in well, you know how I feel about education.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Like, I I it our system has been has been.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: It it it it it's terrible.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Like, like our our entire educational system is we should just like crumble it up, toss it away, and and start anew, because most of the things that we're teaching our kids are not needed, and the life skills and essentials of life that we really need, that we all need.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Because not everybody, uh like certain things in math, not everyone's gonna be an architect or is gonna uh work with numbers that we can't figure it out through a calculator.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: There most career, the fabric of every single human being is the relationships they have, yet we don't have any courses on on how to communicate or anything of that nature.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, and with that I'm gonna say knowing what you know now, what should school teach that it doesn't?
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Emotional intelligence.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Um how to deal with emotional intelligence and and communication.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Because he's copying my answer.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: No, I'm not.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: There's kids out there that uh nowadays with phones, my dad tells me this all the time that my communication gets worse and worse every time I'm on the phone.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Um, I don't think so.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: I think it's gotten better.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Uh since you've been on the phone?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: I just think it's gotten better over the years.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: That's a different conversation.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: No wait, look, this is really important.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Like, like, and because people are listening, and whatever you say is being received, and they're taking it in.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: So, like, I like you know, the model, your des model's always been real, raw, and vulnerable, and and we need to be real, raw, and vulnerable.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Like, whatever it is are are good or bad or imperfections.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, definitely the phone doesn't help um help uh I guess get you focused and communicate with others.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Um, it's a distraction, like we've said for a while.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, schools need to teach communication and and emotional intelligence because people need it, the kids need to know how to deal with their emotion, how to deal with their problems with uh their parents.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Um I feel like there should be like a class basically on just mentorship and like one-on-one or one-on-five talks with just kids and talking about their problems with other people, um like letting it off their shoulders, I guess you could say, and and just being open to to that connection with their teacher so that way when they go into the real world they know how to deal with their emotions and and yeah, I mean and communicate also.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Communication kids now like they don't even know what it means when you say look at like look at the person in your eye in their eyes because that's a big part of communicating, they just look off or they look at their phone while somebody's talking to you.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Um and it's just throwing the other person basically away and pushing them away and and not showing them your full attention.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: So and w when you said emotional, like you you're not you mentioned parents, but like what what do you think as far as like between yourselves, between people, like in relationships, because your parents in relationships in general, and any relationship.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Um I was saying your parents because if you have if you have problems at home and stuff, but it it that goes to everything.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, emotional intelligence is is in every relationship.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And define what you when you say emotional intelligence, you you talk about how to communicate, looking people in the eye.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: What else can you say?
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: Like, do you find emotional intelligence or communication skills like um can you you know expand, elaborate a little bit?
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Just dealing with your problems by yourself with yourself, um may have elaborated, I don't I don't know.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: When you say dealing with your problems, like are are you referring to um by yourself?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Like I I explain a little a a little more how to how to think by yourself and and and learn how to be bored.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Because um me and my dad went to uh a talk, I think it was like two weeks ago, uh Dr.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Shafali, and she's she talked about like my takeaway out of that was honestly like kids need to b be bored nowadays.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Um because with the phones now they're not bored, and when you're bored you think.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: And they don't think kids just they're on their phone and they're talking.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Uh they're not as social.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Some some some people.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I think I I'm pretty good with like my social life and my friends and stuff, and I think my my group is is kind of like that, but I know a lot of people that are not social and they're not outgoing, and that's okay if your personality is not outgoing, but you need to learn how to think and and be with yourself and in your own thoughts and be bored.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: So that was great, that was great.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I want look see, I didn't know, like I didn't know he he he grabbed that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: Like parents, like there's so many things that we think that our kids don't aren't paying attention, and a lot of times they're not, but a lot of times they are.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: This is the thing we don't know when they are and when they're not.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: So keep feeding them with the skills that we want them to embody.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: You know, I I wasn't this just came up for me now.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: You know, we spend so much time telling our kids, what do you want to be?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: And you know, go study and you get a good job and get a good career.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: But it's also like ultimately, if you were to ask, and there's been surveys done on this and the data shows this, and right now, if I were to ask you, you the the listener, if ultimately you can say you want your kid, when people think about your your your child one day an adult, and for us too as as grown-ups, there was one thing we want people to be able to say about us.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, we want that one value, that that trait that we we would want, and kindness.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Be kind.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: We want our our kids to be kind.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: We want people to think about us ourselves as as good people.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: So um the only way that we can show that is by by doing those things.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: So um on that, what do you spend what do you spend the most time in school that matters least?
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: That you feel matters least.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I mean of course I think everybody knows like uh like electives don't really matter, but at the same time um overall, let's go overall, like when you would say your your your entire like you know school career up until now, like what would you say are like Because there's only a certain amount of days.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: I mean hours.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Where may and I'm not asking you like what you mentioned emotional intelligence and and communication skills already.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: How much more important is that than like some of the other things that you've learned in school?
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: You've learned in school.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, much much more important.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Uh there's things of course like basic math and and reading comprehension and stuff like that that you need to know for life.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Um basic stuff to be honest.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: I mean I feel like When do you think?
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Well so I want you to stay at one.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna say that.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like after fifth grade, eighth grade, maybe, eighth grade, I I was honestly like I had the basic knowledge and everything after that.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm not gonna really use that much in in my everyday life.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Um the math I'm learning now, I'm taking AP calculus, and it's like I've never seen letters ever on a check or on a receipt.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Uh like the amount of letters that are on on what I'm doing, it's it's difficult, but it's uh yeah, I feel like there's what much more stuff that that students need to learn than just this I guess excess math.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like after your basic math, after algebra one, algebra two, you should just start picking your math that if you want to take it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: It should be an option.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Um, because of course you're gonna need math for it, depends what what career you're taking.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: If you might need calculus if you're gonna be doing something with that, you might need science if you're gonna be doing something with health.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: But it should be optional to be honest.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Um, that's it, that's my opinion.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I think that there's there's many more classes that people could take.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: People could take public speaking, um, emotional intelligence, communication classes, um, technology classes.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: There needs to be more technology classes out there, so yeah, and as you're saying that, like what comes to mind too is almost like um also like a second languages.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Like and hey, AP Spanish award winner, like what I mean, like truthfully, like, how great is your Spanish?
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I wasn't uh award winner, nothing.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Did you make it an AP Spanish award or something?
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: It was just a recognition of the honor society.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, recognition, honor society.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Well, Johnny, like, yeah, honor society.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: That's an award, son.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Um, like, and I'm not throwing you under the bus.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like to me, and I'm why?
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: And and and this isn't on you.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: This is like, why are we doing this?
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Like, why are we doing this?
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Like, there's so many classes, and and throw in some other ones.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Like, what else do you think is is is extra unless you're going down a certain lane.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Like, this is what I want to do, and okay, let's set this up, where we can throw in, like you said, I think you said leadership skills.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like public speaking.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Public speaking, leadership, uh communication, emotional intelligence.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: Like, there's so many things of life.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: How to financial literacy.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: I mean Yeah, I mean, everything else should be honestly like um optional to that kid based on where where their path is headed.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I have an idea.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: I think that's and also there needs to be a class of of of talking to this your student, asking what they really want to do.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: And because kids say, Oh yeah, I want to be a lawyer.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: But do you even know what a lawyer does?
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, you need to have those conversations with with your students because if they don't know what a lawyer does, how are they gonna know what classes to take?
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: So Well you're talking about generally like going deeper than thanks to the Well, yeah, if these rules were to change and if they're optional, uh you need to talk about to to students like what they really want to do and and why they want to do it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I think that's really important to why.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Because if you get down to the why, most people are like it's it's gonna say, Oh, because it makes a lot of money.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: And then you're miserable, and then you have a terrible uh um life at home, and money doesn't matter when it gets to that point, like if your relationships are terrible.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, so um who or where uh taught you the most important thing you know in school?
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: In school, in in Outside of school, I mean in reference to like uh something that you think is is important for your life and what is it?
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: I mean to be honest, when it comes to I guess like school-wise or for outside of family, I would say all of my coaches.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Um all of all of my coaches over my teachers, because they've taught me how to become a man, they taught me how to you know face adversity, um, never quit, never do it.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: The coaches taught them how to be a man.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: This is really oof.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: What dad's sitting right next to him.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying they're the only ones, I'm saying in uh other than family, I said that was my first line.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Huh.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: This is not good.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: This is by the way, this is really not good for like to how as I'm positioning myself to lead men and young men talking about and what real masculine energy looks like.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, my coaches.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: I said outside of family.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Um being playful, kinda.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I mean they taught me how to face adversity teacher-wise.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: I mean No, what was it?
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: What okay, you said handling adversity, but give an example because that's like very okay.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Never quitting, you know.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, they would teach me how to control myself.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: I'd be get out of control and they'd talk to me, they'd pull me to the side.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Um, all my coaches that I've really ever had, I'll they really like cared.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: And and like you could feel it.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I mean, even my same same Kevin P teacher, um, Mr.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Coyalo, Coach Coyalo, um he was awesome.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: He was like he was just one of those people that you could talk to about anything and and he would tell you he would tell you straight up uh what you're doing wrong or what you're doing good, and yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: I feel like coaches are are really good like mentors kind of uh when it comes to that sport.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: And like right now my basketball coach always tells us like 90% of the stuff that you're learning that I tell you guys, like, you could use it in the real world.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Ten percent of it's basketball.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: And it's the truth.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: I mean everything, everything that you do, everything you do is with a purpose and and for a reason.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: So Yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Um Johnny mentions something and you mentioned something a little bit ago that we're not gonna we edited it because and he says something not meaning bad, uh and I'm using this, and we're editing it for for for multiple purposes because we don't he meant he he was using an example, but without realizing it, somebody could take it, could be thrown under the bus.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: And that's not and I'm sharing this right now because we often say things, we go, we're upset, we're angry, we'll send a text, we'll go on social media, put a comment.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: I I'll I'll take accountability.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: I've done that myself.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: And there's consequences sometimes for that, and there's repercussions sometimes for that.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: And you can't think of, oh, I don't care.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Maybe you do.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: You don't know what your life, where life's gonna take you next year, five years, ten years down the line.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, you have some you know a little a couple things that that I I won't be sure because who knows where the world's gonna take me, but there's certain things that I I feel that in the future down the line, you know, um certain things that maybe I've I've I've written or said that that could come back to haunt me.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I did say them, I'll own them.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Um but be careful.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: What I'm getting at is be careful on messages you sent out there on social media, on a text, on Snapchat, on a video, on any recording, because if you send it, imagine the whole world's gonna see it.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Because it could be used against you.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Uh so we're gonna we're wrapping this up soon.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Um just got a couple more questions, Johnny.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Where do you think you have the upper hand in life than some other people?
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: My my knowledge base on on communication and I haven't read uh as nowhere near to as much as I've kind of wanted to, and my dad's wanted me to, and I know it's good for me.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, because it it it builds your brain up.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Your brain's a muscle, and when you read it it's basically like working out.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Um at the same time, I I think that uh for an 18-year-old, I know much more about communication and and emotional intelligence and body language than most people do.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And I think it's because you know the sometimes it's annoying, but sometimes it's really helpful.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I mean when my dad tells me, like, you know, I want you to listen to this or come with me to this, and it's it's really it really does actually like I learned from it, and sometimes it's repetitive, but you know, when stuff repeats, they always say when when you keep hearing stuff and hearing stuff, it's it's just gets stuck in your brain.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: So it's honestly good.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Uh ways thank you for that, son.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: I I as you're saying that, I I'm I don't mean to cut you off, but I I want to use this as uh something important to like what would you say, because like we we've gone to several things and we don't really see anybody that we know at many of these events.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: How important do you think maybe it's like especially for like events that are like local or stuff like that for maybe parents and their their their their their kids or teens to take part in together and what value you think they can get out of it?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean honestly you can get whatever value you you you hear or whatever value you want to hear, there's there's things that that are gonna stick with you, and if they stick with you, it's good.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: If not, then it wasn't meant to stick with you.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Um and what if like you were saying, how people don't, you know, don't we don't know anybody barely whenever we go to these places we really it's just us, um but that's what connecting is all about connect with other people, you share context and some of these most of these things are about you know businesses and stuff, but there's there's conferences that that are about parenting and about communication.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Um and it's just you know you connect with people and and you meet new people and and those people if they're looking for better and you're looking for better, it's it's honestly the best because you guys are are both looking for you know to grow your knowledge.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Well and everything's not a conference like like the Shafali thing was just a talk, I mean it was just a two-hour talk.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Um you said something that I I want, you know, even if you grab a little piece, like somebody um a long time ago, somebody really dear to me taught me.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Listen, we're always looking for, oh, you know what, this thing was a waste of my time.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: And they they told me, look for the nugget, look for the jewels, look for the treasures.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Even if it's one thing, even if you walked out with one thing, then you put it in your toolbox and your knowledge and your takeaway, and you just became uh a little bit better, or I'm gonna say one percent better.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Like there's a word called kaizen.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'm pronouncing it wrong.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: It's a Japanese word, which is if every day you were to become one percent better, just one percent.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: It's minuscule, but it compounds.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: And I think actually Atomic Habits um is talks about that too.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: So uh last question, and then we'll do go into takeaways.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Uh you know what I mean.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: We kind of talked about that.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: So, what's a decision that you trust yourself?
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what's one decision that you trust yourself to make right now in your life?
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Um what aspect.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: Anything, I mean it's open.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, it could be small.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: If it's small, I mean I trust myself on the basketball court.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: Like, I trust myself.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: So in life, you're so right now, what do you trust yourself?
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Like, right now you had to be like completely out on your own.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, I mean I trust myself on in having the confidence to to go up to people and and asking them uh kind of selling myself to them.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: I I trust myself in communicating with other people.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Oh excellent yourself, there's no we're not doing OnlyFans here.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Come on, Bobby.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: You're always every time you talk to somebody, you're selling yourself.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, I mean I think I had the confidence to talk to older people.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: I've always connected, like I was a little kid, and I would always hang out with my older cousins or my older sister's friends, and it was normal to me.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was like I don't know, it was just like they were my friends too, kind of like it was just you know what I hear there is that you trust yourself to within the the within the communication to figure it out.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean I'm not nervous to to go and and talk to other people and older people.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: I'm not really yeah, I mean I'm not scared to to talk or to I guess you know, build relationships with other with other people that could help me.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: And I mean, yeah, if I was by myself alone, I I would trust myself to figure it out for sure.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: I would figure it out.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: This is great.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: This is great.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Like this was really great, like it was so great, there's so much more, but we're you know, we're running on time, and we're gonna like I think we're gonna do a part two on this uh maybe next week, maybe if not, like soon uh after.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: So let's go to takeaways, Johnny.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Like what takeaways do you do you well before the takeaways?
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Every vote that we make, it's election week, every vote that we make is is is important, and every time that you guys vote for us in top hosts, like it means a lot to us.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: And you know, this is like a what we're trying to build is like a family, a community of people, of expanding ourselves and bringing what we all want, like real deep connection with the people that we love.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Better lean in on understanding what we're doing right, what we're doing wrong.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: So please, you get a free vote every 24 hours.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: We appreciate your vote.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Like, go in there, vote, um, uh share.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Uh if you want to donate something for for the top host, we're I think we're two right now.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Um voting ends today.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, we appreciate it.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Like, we we appreciate it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Help us get this message to more people, which winning this competition will absolutely uh do.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: And subscribe.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Share it.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Um this these conversations they're they go to everybody.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: They don't there's no specific group of people that that we're trying to, you know, have in the community.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: It literally goes to everybody, grandparents, parents, uh, kids.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: And by the way, like please, we're gonna do an episode like I I don't know if it's the next one or like group maybe we gotta start doing more.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: I I don't know, but like by the way, there's a lot of people that have been sending comments and they're selling them DMs.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: So feel free to send them.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Like, I never will share your name.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: You want to say anonymous, but I want to we want to answer your questions because I know that and we have like I have a list of questions to that have already come in.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: We gotta do that one the next one, uh the next show.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: So please bring in the questions, let us answer them.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: We want to, we're here to serve, we're here to help.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: So takeaways, Johnny.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Um become one percent better every day.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Uh I hear it all the time, and it's the truth because one percent in a week is seven percent, in two weeks it's fourteen percent, and a year it's three hundred and sixty-five percent.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, it's more than that because it compounds.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: So one percent in three after three hundred and sixty, all of that compounds.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: So it ends up becoming uh thousands of percent better.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: I don't do the math.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: We'll we'll we'll do the math and we'll actually put it in the people be like, what is that number?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: We'll put it on the on the description.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I mean become one percent better every day and and try to open your knowledge.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: Read read a book, I mean, once every two weeks, or or try to read a book once a month.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: Um or you know, watch videos on on people that know how to communicate that that just teach that teach you just like these golden nuggets.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: So golden nuggets, there we go.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Uh so my takeaway is gonna be um we need to allow our children to figure it out.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: We need to allow them to figure it out.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: We need to allow them the friction of, oh, my kid wasn't invited to the party.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Well, well, son, honey.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: You know, like it's okay.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, but I'm set.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: It's okay.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: We keep involving ourselves in our children's lives in things that are not our responsibility, no matter how hard it is, no matter how much it hurts us, it's actually selfish.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Like it's actually selfish.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: It's really selfish as a parent.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And I say this because I'm guilty.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: I'm not putting the finger at you, I'm I'm pointing at me.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Like I screwed up here many times thinking, believing wholeheartedly I was trying to be this like great dad.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: This is gonna hurt hit when what I really was doing was doing it so I could feel like the great dad.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: But not allowing my son or my daughter to hit that uncomfortable, difficult moment of of life in their area and have to navigate it.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: So let's allow our children to fail their way because in failing now, as the younger they are and they keep failing and making mistakes, and then we're we're we're building up a muscle, which is called, and a skill called confidence, which is absolutely needed in in our lives and in their in their in their lives.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: So thank you for this episode um of Frank of This Is Frankie and This is Johnny, and conversations we've never had.
