- 0:00Cooler weather means things are heating
- 0:02up at the Mandel Public Library.
- 0:05Welcome to the City Center Podcast.
- 0:06I'm Jerry Marcello.
- 0:08The Mandel Public Library is always
- 0:10hopping with events and
- 0:11activities, and this winter
- 0:13promises more events than ever before.
- 0:16We'll get a preview next
- 0:17on the City Center Podcast.
- 0:25Joining us now is Christina Carollo, who
- 0:27is a digital marketing
- 0:29strategist for the City
- 0:30of West Palm Beach.
- 0:32Christina, welcome.
- 0:33Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:34A lot of people are surprised about just
- 0:36how much stuff goes on at
- 0:38the Mandel Public Library.
- 0:40It is amazing and insane, actually,
- 0:43because they have so many
- 0:44programs, over 100 every
- 0:45single month for kids, for teens, for
- 0:47adults, anything from like
- 0:49painting or even some music
- 0:52if you're interested.
- 0:53You have kids where you could rent out
- 0:55ukuleles and learn how to
- 0:56play that instrument, or
- 0:58you have like rhythm and hues
- 0:59up in story time with the kids.
- 1:02There's so many good things going on.
- 1:04So you have programs that are designed
- 1:07just for children, or
- 1:09are things happening for
- 1:10adults as well?
- 1:11Everybody, adults as well.
- 1:13So even if it's like technology, you want
- 1:15to learn a new
- 1:16programming like for Photoshop
- 1:17or something like that.
- 1:18You can go to the second floor, that's
- 1:20the technology floor,
- 1:21or you could head up to
- 1:23the third floor, there's lecture halls
- 1:25there, and there's always
- 1:25a different lecture going
- 1:26on with a different topic.
- 1:28And they usually have like a
- 1:29third party person come in.
- 1:31It could be historical.
- 1:33It could be, you know,
- 1:34tutorial, anything and everything.
- 1:37They're always
- 1:37looking for new activities.
- 1:40Sure.
- 1:41You said something that intrigued me.
- 1:42You said that the second
- 1:44floor was the technology floor.
- 1:46I'm used to a library being full of
- 1:48books, you know, so tell
- 1:50me what a technology floor
- 1:54involves.
- 1:54Of course I would love to.
- 1:56So the technology floor
- 1:58has a lot of technology.
- 2:01Let's start with the computers.
- 2:03There's public computers there.
- 2:05People can use them.
- 2:06They can print stuff.
- 2:07They can ask a librarian for help if
- 2:08they're working on something.
- 2:10So we'll start with
- 2:11that, you know, floor.
- 2:14But then if you go into the technology
- 2:15and innovation center,
- 2:17that is very special.
- 2:19So if you want to record a podcast
- 2:21episode, we have a sound
- 2:23booth in there so you can
- 2:24go in.
- 2:25Everything's nice and quiet.
- 2:26You record.
- 2:27There's a mic.
- 2:28There's a computer.
- 2:29So you can start your new podcast.
- 2:31Well, that's really cool.
- 2:32So you can actually just go in here and
- 2:33do your own podcast using
- 2:35the library's facilities.
- 2:37Absolutely.
- 2:38Or if you're a musician, you're into
- 2:39music, you want to sing,
- 2:41you can also use that booth.
- 2:43Or if you want to learn a new program
- 2:44like Photoshop, you can
- 2:46do that in there as well.
- 2:47Or if you've never used a VR
- 2:49headset, you have, you love it.
- 2:51You can also do that.
- 2:52And there's a cool new
- 2:53chair that you could sit in.
- 2:54You put the VR and it's very immersive.
- 2:57Very nice.
- 2:58Well, very, very cool.
- 2:59And you mentioned the third floor.
- 3:00There are there's many
- 3:01programs that go on as well.
- 3:04Yes.
- 3:04So the third floor is
- 3:05predominantly the children's floor.
- 3:08But there is a whole area where you have
- 3:10those smaller rooms and
- 3:13a lot of lectures will go
- 3:14on in there.
- 3:15Oh, yeah.
- 3:15Yeah.
- 3:16The auditorium as well.
- 3:17What sort of lectures
- 3:18are you talking about?
- 3:20So there are many.
- 3:22But what comes to mind is there's usually
- 3:23some kind of historical lecture in there.
- 3:26I can't think of anything
- 3:27at the moment, of course.
- 3:28But they'll have sometimes even
- 3:30professors from local
- 3:31colleges come and speak about a
- 3:33certain topic.
- 3:34They've had a really cool
- 3:36series before about Jane Austen.
- 3:39I don't want to say I don't know the
- 3:41exact name of the organization.
- 3:43But if you're a Jane Austen lover, you
- 3:45love the books literature.
- 3:47It's really fun to come and listen about
- 3:49Jane Austen and her writing process.
- 3:51But it's not just these
- 3:52lectures are not just about books.
- 3:53They could be about anything.
- 3:55Anything.
- 3:56Yeah.
- 3:56OK.
- 3:57So it's really cool.
- 3:58I know we'll talk a little bit more about
- 4:00where you get information.
- 4:01But just since we're talking about it,
- 4:03how would I find out
- 4:04what upcoming lectures are
- 4:06coming up?
- 4:07That is a great question.
- 4:08So there's a few ways to go about it.
- 4:10You can go to the library and there's
- 4:11actually a booklet, a
- 4:13physical booklet that every single
- 4:15month this is printed
- 4:16and available for people.
- 4:18And it goes through.
- 4:19It has all of the different sections for
- 4:21teens, adults, kids across the board.
- 4:24So you can go in and see
- 4:25what's happening on what date.
- 4:27Also if it's registration based, if it
- 4:29is, you need to go online.
- 4:30And that would be WPBCDlibrary.org, which
- 4:33is on the back of the
- 4:34booklet, including all
- 4:36of the hours for the library, which is
- 4:38also important because
- 4:39pretty much any day of the
- 4:41week they're open up at different times.
- 4:43And now where do I get that again?
- 4:45So you walk into the library on any
- 4:47single floor that you're on.
- 4:48You can get one of these and go right up
- 4:50to the first floor desk and grab one.
- 4:53But if let's say you don't really like
- 4:55physical copies, you can go online.
- 4:58And there is the online calendar that the
- 5:00library always has
- 5:01set up and it's updated
- 5:02or they actually have a digital version
- 5:04of this booklet that
- 5:06you could flip through as
- 5:07well.
- 5:07You know, I, one of the very first things
- 5:10I did when I came
- 5:11here to the city of West
- 5:12Palm beaches to visit the library.
- 5:14And it was, it was an amazing experience
- 5:16because the one you're
- 5:17used to thinking of a library
- 5:19just being books, maybe a couple little
- 5:21reading rooms, a magazine rack.
- 5:24That's not what Mandel is.
- 5:25It's got so much going on.
- 5:28It's just simply insane.
- 5:30It really is.
- 5:31You know?
- 5:31And so it was a tremendous experience.
- 5:34And, you know, it takes me back to when I
- 5:35was a little kid, I
- 5:36grew up here in West Palm
- 5:38beach and I remember very
- 5:39plainly going to the old library.
- 5:41It was, I think it built like in 1964.
- 5:44That was down at the end of Klimatis.
- 5:46And it was, it was, you know, a beautiful
- 5:49building, but it was a
- 5:50lot smaller than this.
- 5:51And that was traditional.
- 5:52That was a traditional library of just
- 5:54whatever books that the
- 5:56city had in a couple of small
- 5:57rooms and a meeting space.
- 5:59The Mandel public library takes it to a
- 6:02whole new level of involvement.
- 6:04And I think involvement is just the right
- 6:06term because a library
- 6:08used to like grabbing
- 6:08a book or grabbing a magazine, sitting
- 6:10down and being quiet.
- 6:12The Mandel library is not like that.
- 6:14They want you to become
- 6:15involved and do stuff.
- 6:17Absolutely.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:19They're not like
- 6:19getting community involvement.
- 6:21So they want people to come in, of
- 6:22course, check out a book,
- 6:24but also engage in a program,
- 6:25meet new people.
- 6:27It's a lot of like
- 6:27shared community spaces.
- 6:30So it is the little library still that
- 6:33you don't love from
- 6:35childhood, but it also is
- 6:36like a lot bigger.
- 6:37It's a big part of like the
- 6:38city's social infrastructure.
- 6:41Again, it's a place where people from
- 6:43like all backgrounds
- 6:43and walks of life can come
- 6:45in and just use the
- 6:47library for whatever they want.
- 6:49Everything is free.
- 6:50That's the best part.
- 6:51Every single program
- 6:52that you go to is free.
- 6:54Checking out books is free.
- 6:56It's really lovely to be able to offer
- 6:58everyone an opportunity,
- 7:02you know, whether it's an
- 7:03art program or to learn a new piece of
- 7:05technology to come in,
- 7:07even if maybe they don't have
- 7:08the means at the time, they can still
- 7:10participate and learn something new.
- 7:12You mentioned going in and visiting the
- 7:14library and taking part
- 7:17in the resources there.
- 7:19How hard is it to get a library card?
- 7:22So hard.
- 7:23It's a journey.
- 7:24I'm kidding.
- 7:25It's not hard at all.
- 7:26So you literally walk in, you go up to
- 7:28the first friendly face
- 7:29you see at the desk and
- 7:31you say, hello, I
- 7:32would like a library card.
- 7:33And they'll probably ask you, well,
- 7:35they'll say welcome.
- 7:36And then they'll ask for your ID and some
- 7:39information and we'll get that set up for
- 7:41you right away.
- 7:43And do I can I should I assume that I got
- 7:47to live in the city of West Palm Beach to
- 7:49get a car?
- 7:50No.
- 7:50So yeah, the Mano Public
- 7:52Library is a magical place.
- 7:54And one of the magical qualities is that
- 7:56you don't have to live
- 7:57directly in the city or
- 7:59even the county.
- 8:00We really welcome everyone around Florida
- 8:03as long as you're able
- 8:04to put like an address
- 8:06and you know, show ID and set that up.
- 8:09You can get a library card.
- 8:11But there's also a cool point.
- 8:13So let's say you're not ready for a
- 8:14library card or you don't
- 8:15have your ID with you, but
- 8:16you just want a computer use card.
- 8:18So you could still go online, browse the
- 8:21Internet, hang out in the library.
- 8:23You can get one of those.
- 8:24OK, so I actually it's a great thing.
- 8:26The computer use card that's different
- 8:29than a library card or?
- 8:31Yes.
- 8:32Yeah.
- 8:32So it's a library card that's full.
- 8:35We have like your
- 8:35address, all of that, you know.
- 8:38So if you don't return a book, which of
- 8:40course we all return our books.
- 8:41Sure.
- 8:42I do.
- 8:43But it's good to know where to send the
- 8:46mail to the letter to
- 8:48say, hey, just a reminder
- 8:49you owe your books.
- 8:52But let's say you don't really care about
- 8:54checking out books at
- 8:55the moment or you just
- 8:56want to go on the computer.
- 8:58You don't you came with
- 8:58literally just your phone.
- 9:00That's it.
- 9:01You could say, could I please sign up for
- 9:03a computer use card?
- 9:04OK.
- 9:05And they'll usually
- 9:06work with you with that.
- 9:07Or if you're visiting for a day, because
- 9:08we get a lot of
- 9:09visitors, especially with the
- 9:10airport nearby, people will come.
- 9:13They can just get like a day pass, which
- 9:15is really nice, too.
- 9:16So you get your day pass.
- 9:17You can hop on the computer
- 9:18if you need to print something.
- 9:20Sometimes people are here for business.
- 9:21Sure.
- 9:22So they can get a study room if they need
- 9:24to make like a phone call.
- 9:25That's cool.
- 9:26It's awesome.
- 9:27And then if they have to print a document
- 9:28of some kind, they can do that, too.
- 9:30That is incredibly useful.
- 9:32That is very nice.
- 9:33And again, the theme I'm seeing over and
- 9:35over and over again is
- 9:36that it is a place for
- 9:38community folks to gather.
- 9:41It's a place where
- 9:41people can come together.
- 9:43They can interact.
- 9:44They can be creative.
- 9:45They can be productive.
- 9:47And it all happens
- 9:48within these four walls.
- 9:50It's true. Yeah.
- 9:51Four floors of just goodness.
- 9:55Four floors.
- 9:56That should be their stance line.
- 9:57The four floors of goodness.
- 9:59I love it.
- 10:00OK, so once again, let's touch base on
- 10:03what is a very important thing.
- 10:04You showed us the library events and it's
- 10:07a jam packed season of events coming up.
- 10:10Obviously, it's only
- 10:11October in that book.
- 10:13And we were going to be talking about the
- 10:15first months of 2026 coming up.
- 10:18And there's going to be stuff going on
- 10:19during that period of time.
- 10:21But how if I'm just online, how do I get
- 10:24to see that information?
- 10:25How do I get to know what's going on?
- 10:27So, yeah, if you go, you can even start
- 10:29at the city's website.
- 10:32So you go W.P.B.
- 10:34.org. You can start there.
- 10:36The library has a little
- 10:37icon right on the homepage.
- 10:38Or you can get really specific.
- 10:40And if you need this little handy dandy
- 10:41book to remind you,
- 10:43it is going to be W.P.
- 10:44B.
- 10:44City library dot org is on the back.
- 10:47And that will take you
- 10:47directly to the library's page.
- 10:51And then when you go there, it'll have a
- 10:53little tab for events and you can start
- 10:55browsing through all of the upcoming
- 10:56events on the calendar.
- 10:58It's usually for that month.
- 11:00But if we're towards the end of the
- 11:01month, then you might
- 11:02start to see next month's
- 11:04filling in.
- 11:05A little bit off of what we were talking
- 11:06about, but we were talking about the
- 11:07resources at the library.
- 11:09Obviously, books is a big
- 11:10part of what goes on there.
- 11:11But there's also DVDs and movies as well.
- 11:15So many movies and DVDs.
- 11:16I personally just checked out.
- 11:18You've got mail for fall, of course.
- 11:20One of my personal favorites.
- 11:21It's so good. I love it.
- 11:23So, yeah, whenever I feel like I want to
- 11:26watch something and maybe, you know, it's
- 11:27not Netflix and you have to rent it and
- 11:30you're like, I don't I would rather do it
- 11:32for free.
- 11:32You go to the library, you
- 11:34browse a collection there.
- 11:36I can't even guess how many there are,
- 11:38but there is a very
- 11:39large collection of movies
- 11:41and DVDs up there.
- 11:43Anything from my classics and horror and
- 11:45action to your
- 11:46romance and your dramaties.
- 11:49They got everything.
- 11:50All right. So the the
- 11:51challenge is, is just everybody
- 11:53go out to Mandel Public Library.
- 11:55Absolutely.
- 11:56Explore. Check it out.
- 11:57There's so much going on there.
- 11:59It's just amazing.
- 12:00It really is.
- 12:01That's fantastic.
- 12:03I want to just thank you, Christina, to
- 12:05for all the time that
- 12:06you spent with us today.
- 12:08Of course.
- 12:09Keeping us informed.
- 12:09And I look forward to seeing you again
- 12:11another couple of months.
- 12:12Tell us about what's going
- 12:12on during the wintertime.
- 12:14So during the winter, it's not out yet,
- 12:16but there's going to
- 12:17be winter reading, which
- 12:19is very exciting.
- 12:21So once the theme is
- 12:22out, look forward to it.
- 12:25You can sign up for the challenge.
- 12:27And that's just your reading books.
- 12:29Simple.
- 12:29If you like reading, it'll be easy.
- 12:31And then you log your books.
- 12:32And every time you log a book, you'll
- 12:34have the opportunity to
- 12:35enter a raffle, enter a
- 12:37raffle for a prize.
- 12:39Wow.
- 12:39And there's some really cool prizes.
- 12:41It's really nice.
- 12:42Yeah.
- 12:42And then also it's really cool because
- 12:44it's through a program or a
- 12:46platform called Beanstack.
- 12:49And then you can actually
- 12:49see the books that you submit.
- 12:51And if you read a review for it, you can
- 12:53go back and look at
- 12:54the books that you read.
- 12:55And maybe you don't remember your review.
- 12:58So you go back, you read it.
- 12:59You're like, wow, maybe
- 13:00I should read it again.
- 13:03It's a never ending line of cool stuff
- 13:05going on at the Mandel Hotel.
- 13:07Yeah.
- 13:08Thank you again for all
- 13:09your time today, Christina.
- 13:10I really appreciate you coming on by.
- 13:12Thanks for everything you do.
- 13:13Thank you.
- 13:14And please, everyone, go to the library.
- 13:17And thank you for joining us.
