- 0:16gay friendly church. Vatican City, Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, a fierce
- 0:22ultra conservative critic of Pope Francis, has been found guilty of schism and excommunicated,
- 0:28the Vatican's Doctrinal Office said on Friday. Bigano, the papal envoy in
- 0:33Washington from twenty eleven twenty sixteen, went into hiding in twenty eighteen after alleging
- 0:38that the Pope knew for years about sexual misconduct by US Cardinal Theodore Mcerrick and
- 0:42did nothing about it. He had said the Pope should resign and subsequently branded
- 0:47him a false prophet and a servant of Satan. The Vatican rejected Bagano's accusations
- 0:53of a cover up of sexual misconduct, and last month summoned him to answer
- 0:57charges of schism in denying the Pope's legitimacy. In a statement on Friday,
- 1:02the Doctrinal Office said his public comments made it clear that he refused to recognize
- 1:07and submit to Pope Francis. He had also rejected the legitimacy of liberal reforms
- 1:11made by the Roman Catholic Church in the Second Vatican Council in the nineteen sixties.
- 1:15It said, at the conclusion of the penal process, the most Reverend
- 1:21Carlo Maria Vigano was found guilty of the reserved delict violation of the law of
- 1:25schism, the statement said, adding that he had been excommunicated or banished from
- 1:30the Church. In a message on x the eighty three year old Begano remained
- 1:34unrepentant, publishing the full text of the decision against him, which warned that
- 1:38he could be expelled from the Roman Catholic priesthood if he persisted in his stance.
- 1:44He urged Catholic faithful to voice their support for him, quoting Jesus in
- 1:48the New Testament, if they keep quiet, the stones themselves will start shouting.
- 1:53The Vatican ruling was signed by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, head of the
- 1:57Doctrine of the Faith Office, and by its Secretary, Father John Joseph Kennedy.
- 2:02As is normal in such matters, it was not signed by the Pope,
- 2:06but it is highly unlikely that the punishment was meted out without his approval.
- 2:09Vigano, who mostly communicates via the ex social network, said last month
- 2:15that he had refused to take part in the disciplinary proceedings because he did not
- 2:19accept the legitimacy of the institutions behind it. I do not recognize the authority
- 2:23of the tribunal that claims to judge me, nor of its prefect, nor
- 2:28of the one who appointed him, he said, referring Fernandez and to Francis.
- 2:32In a lengthy text, Vigano referred to the Pope only by his surname
- 2:37Burgoglio, and accused him of representing an inclusive, a migrationist, eco sustainable,
- 2:43and gay friendly church that had strayed from its true message. Francis has
- 2:47angered many conservatives by making overtures towards divorcees and the LGBT community, and by
- 2:53saying that mercy and forgiveness should come before the strict enforcement of Catholic doctrine.
- 2:58The Pope has also put him self at odds with conservatives and traditionalists by championing
- 3:02migrant rights in the fight against climate change and condemning the excesses of capitalism.
- 3:07Last year, Francis took action against another arch conservative critic from the US,
- 3:13dismissing Bishop Joseph E. Strickland of Tyler, Texas, after he refused to
- 3:17step down voluntarily following a Vatican investigation.
