Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Lucy Fisher: Financial Times Whitehall editor on Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as Prime Minister
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Starm has gone and he's quite emotional.
- 0:03Speaker 2: When I leave the biggest job in the country, I
- 0:07Speaker 2: shall spend more time on the most important job, being
- 0:12Speaker 2: the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vick,
- 0:16Speaker 2: who has been a rock by my side through good
- 0:19Speaker 2: times and bad, and being the best dad I can,
- 0:24Speaker 2: to my beautiful children who are my pride.
- 0:27Speaker 1: For my joint now, he stays on until a successor
- 0:29Speaker 1: is chosen, likely to be Burnham when Parliament returns in September.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Lucy Fisher, Financial Times Whitehall Editor joins us live Lucy,
- 0:36Speaker 1: good morning, good evening to you.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Good evening.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Reaction I wanted to start with. Reaction has been what
- 0:43Speaker 1: is the being market reaction? What are the bonds been doing.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well? Perhaps counterintuitively, we saw both the pounds and guild
- 0:52Speaker 3: markets tick up today after where Streeting announced that he
- 0:56Speaker 3: would not be running and would fold in behind Burnham.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I think there's a sense that the markets had already
- 1:02Speaker 3: priced in that there was likely to be a change
- 1:03Speaker 3: of prime minister, and the signal that there will not
- 1:07Speaker 3: be a sort of bloody contest but instead a fairly
- 1:10Speaker 3: seamless transition of power I think has been welcomed by
- 1:13Speaker 3: the market.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Lucy, has he done the right thing for Labor or
- 1:16Speaker 1: could will we likely be back here again before Alix
- 1:20Speaker 1: and day in doing this whole dnswer again.
- 1:25Speaker 3: God, it's such a good question, isn't it. And the
- 1:28Speaker 3: slightly unedifying statistic that the UK is about to be
- 1:31Speaker 3: on its seventh prime minister in a decade, possibly its
- 1:34Speaker 3: eighth chancellor, possibly its tenth foreign secretary is not a
- 1:39Speaker 3: particularly positive one for Britain's prospects. So I think all
- 1:43Speaker 3: the hope in the Labor Party is that browling the
- 1:45Speaker 3: dice on likely Andy Burnham as the next leader will
- 1:49Speaker 3: lead to some stability, will help Labor turn around its
- 1:53Speaker 3: standing in the polls and put in a competitive position
- 1:56Speaker 3: to be reform UK at the next election three years.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I heard a lot of voxes people on the streets staying, yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 1: we're happy he's gone. Oh, great news, excellent, But as
- 2:06Speaker 1: any one, you know, how stoked are they that they're
- 2:09Speaker 1: going to probably get Andy Burnham.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Well, look, there is a prison of excitement among some
- 2:17Speaker 3: who have sort of brought into his message of change
- 2:19Speaker 3: and hope. You know, he is Labour's most popular candidate nationally,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and we saw the difference that his personal brand makes
- 2:28Speaker 3: in Makerfield last week, where he won with a very
- 2:32Speaker 3: decisive majority, despite the fact that Reformer UK had picked
- 2:36Speaker 3: up all the council seats in that Westminster constituency just
- 2:40Speaker 3: a month before. So there is a feel good factor
- 2:43Speaker 3: around him. He does have a personal brand and you
- 2:45Speaker 3: know he is very much styling himself as you know,
- 2:50Speaker 3: a man of the North who is to take on
- 2:53Speaker 3: the Westminster based elites and pivot away from being London centric.
- 2:57Speaker 3: That's a message that may particularly residate with communities liable
- 3:01Speaker 3: to vate reform who felt left behind in recent years.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Indeede Lucy Fisher, Financial Times, Whitehall. It is a great
- 3:07Speaker 1: Tavy on the show this morning with an analysis.
