- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Women's
- 0:02Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show. Bob Joyce your host with coach Oriema
- 0:05Speaker 1: as he's on the phone today. Next couple of shows
- 0:08Speaker 1: we'll be recorded, but we'll be back at Cafe or
- 0:10Speaker 1: in early January. Husky's coming off well an NCAA type
- 0:15Speaker 1: of weekend with a little travel involved Cincinnati and Tampa,
- 0:18Speaker 1: but two games in three days, which is.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Something you know that we haven't really had yet this season.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's been a very i don't know, fractured schedule where
- 0:26Speaker 1: you got a lot of time off between games. But
- 0:29Speaker 1: this weekend, I think you got everything accomplished that you
- 0:32Speaker 1: hope that you would get out of your basketball team
- 0:34Speaker 1: with two impressive wins this weekend.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we did. And you never know, you know what's
- 0:40Speaker 3: going to happen on these road trips. You know, you
- 0:45Speaker 3: you kind of.
- 0:47Speaker 4: You know, you pray for good weather.
- 0:49Speaker 3: It's wintertime, and so we got pretty good weather except
- 0:52Speaker 3: for you know, the trip home was a little.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Bit dicey because of the weather here.
- 0:57Speaker 5: But you know, you hope that it goes pretty smoothly.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But you prepare for anything, and on a basketball on
- 1:06Speaker 3: a basketball level, you know, you have one day between games,
- 1:11Speaker 3: which is great because it's like an NCAA tournament as
- 1:14Speaker 3: as you said, and you hope for mature enough to handle.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:21Speaker 3: You know, the first trip like this of the season.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So everything went about as well as you can expect.
- 1:30Speaker 4: You know, we we we played.
- 1:33Speaker 3: You know, we played well. We we got some things
- 1:36Speaker 3: accomplished that we set out to accomplish. And the players
- 1:41Speaker 3: that you that you look for to continue playing well
- 1:45Speaker 3: did and the ones you want to see make progress did.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So all in all, it was it.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Was a great trip. Gill.
- 1:52Speaker 1: You have depth this year, which is something that's well,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you had some of it last season, but in previous years,
- 1:58Speaker 1: all the injuries, it's something you just didn't have that luxury.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Is that something that you're still adjusting to the challenge
- 2:04Speaker 1: of making sure players get enough minutes?
- 2:10Speaker 5: Uh, it does take a little bit of work.
- 2:16Speaker 3: You've got to plan ahead.
- 2:18Speaker 4: You can't.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Get caught up in.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Either side of it.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You know, I want to play my I want I
- 2:30Speaker 3: want to keep this lineup out there a long time
- 2:32Speaker 3: because they they're playing great. They can't get caught up
- 2:35Speaker 3: in that. And you also be careful that, hey, I've
- 2:39Speaker 3: got to get all these guys in no matter what.
- 2:42Speaker 3: So you're trying to balance that as best you can. Again,
- 2:49Speaker 3: still working on trying different combinations, Which ones work best,
- 2:56Speaker 3: which ones you gotta avoid, you know, who has to
- 3:01Speaker 3: be on the floor at which time. Like you said,
- 3:05Speaker 3: when we when we were down to six players, seven
- 3:07Speaker 3: players max, not even seven, a lot of times we
- 3:13Speaker 3: didn't we didn't have to worry about that. We just,
- 3:15Speaker 3: uh we knew who was going to be out there.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And there's a there's a there's a lot of upside
- 3:19Speaker 3: to that as well. You know, players get to be
- 3:22Speaker 3: really familiar with each other, They great chemistry. Yeah, so
- 3:30Speaker 3: there's there's a there's a plus to having uh some depth,
- 3:37Speaker 3: and you you hope that they earn it. You know,
- 3:41Speaker 3: you can't just throw them out there just because hey,
- 3:43Speaker 3: we have to throw them out there. You hope that
- 3:45Speaker 3: they that they earn it and they value it and.
- 3:48Speaker 5: That they are productive.
- 3:50Speaker 3: So so far we've gotten a lot of that, and
- 3:54Speaker 3: you know, we'll keep doing it as long as that happened, right.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Sarah Strong fourth double double of the season on Tuesday Night,
- 4:01Speaker 1: fourteen ten.
- 4:02Speaker 2: She had four assists. She leads a team in that department.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I think she's number one and assist to turnover ratio
- 4:07Speaker 1: nationally a block couple of steals. But the signature, one
- 4:12Speaker 1: of the signatures of this program is loose balls. You're
- 4:15Speaker 1: going after it, You're diving when your best player is
- 4:18Speaker 1: doing that geno that that pretty much sums up what
- 4:21Speaker 1: this program is about.
- 4:24Speaker 3: It is and it's it's kind of mind boggling through
- 4:29Speaker 3: sometimes that I look back and when we put highlight
- 4:35Speaker 3: films together. You know, we have clips that we show
- 4:40Speaker 3: our players. You know, there's you know, there's Superb diving
- 4:46Speaker 3: on a loose ball. You know, you know, sliding into
- 4:50Speaker 3: the scores table. There's Diana Tarassi on the floor. You know,
- 4:55Speaker 3: there's Renee Montgomery. There's maya more, you know, players that
- 5:02Speaker 3: you would think, you know.
- 5:04Speaker 4: They're really really good. They don't necessarily do that.
- 5:06Speaker 5: That's left for like the role players. But for us,
- 5:12Speaker 5: it's it's it's.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Been kind of a culture thing in our program that
- 5:20Speaker 3: it doesn't matter if you're a kid trying to make
- 5:22Speaker 3: the team, hoping to get in the rotation or you know,
- 5:27Speaker 3: your first team all market. You know, if there's a
- 5:30Speaker 3: loose ball, then we're getting it. And and I think
- 5:34Speaker 3: that's that's a great example for the entire team.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I know this may be unfair for Sarah strong, but boy.
- 5:43Speaker 1: There's a lot of Maya at least when I watch
- 5:47Speaker 1: Sarah play. But I know some of their skill sets
- 5:50Speaker 1: are different. How similar are those two from when Maya
- 5:54Speaker 1: played at you kind of what Sarah does now?
- 6:00Speaker 5: Mhm?
- 6:00Speaker 3: I think similar in that they can single handle and
- 6:07Speaker 3: carry a game in a lot of different ways. Maya
- 6:12Speaker 3: was not as much in the ball handling and assist world,
- 6:23Speaker 3: but she was more uh of a shop blocker even than.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Uh than than than there is and and.
- 6:36Speaker 3: More. I think, uh from a you know, just thinking
- 6:43Speaker 3: score all the time. You know, uh, there is a
- 6:47Speaker 3: little bit different than that. She does get into those modes,
- 6:51Speaker 3: but that you know why she probably leads the country.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know, she loves to pass the ball. So there
- 6:58Speaker 3: are similarities in that they can carry a team, they
- 7:01Speaker 3: can get fifteen, twenty rebounds, they can score thirty, impact
- 7:08Speaker 3: the game so many different ways, but they each have
- 7:12Speaker 3: their own signature styles and again I love it that
- 7:18Speaker 3: the results are the same but they go about in
- 7:20Speaker 3: a different way.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, more work, do you know? In a minute?
- 7:23Speaker 1: So you kind of women's basketball coaches show on learfield,
- 7:25Speaker 1: stay with us,
