- 0:00Speaker 1: Jacob chapter five. Behold, my brethren, do ye not remember
- 0:05Speaker 1: to have read the words of the prophet Zenus, which
- 0:07Speaker 1: he spake unto the house of Israel, saying, hearken, o
- 0:11Speaker 1: ye house of Israel, and hear the words of me,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a prophet of the Lord. For behold, thus saith the Lord,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I will liken thee o house of Israel, liken to
- 0:18Speaker 1: attame olive tree which a man took and nourished in
- 0:22Speaker 1: his vineyard, and it grew and waxed old, and began
- 0:25Speaker 1: to decay. And it came to pass that the master
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the vineyard went forth, and he saw that his
- 0:30Speaker 1: olive tree began to decay, and he said, I will
- 0:33Speaker 1: prune it and dig about it, and nourish it, that
- 0:36Speaker 1: perhaps it may shoot forth young and tender branches. And
- 0:39Speaker 1: it perished not. And it came to pass that he
- 0:42Speaker 1: pruned it and digged about it, and nourished it according
- 0:45Speaker 1: to his word. And it came to pass that after
- 0:48Speaker 1: many days it began to put forth somewhat a little
- 0:51Speaker 1: young and tender branches. But behold, the main top thereof
- 0:55Speaker 1: began to perish. And it came to pass that the
- 0:58Speaker 1: master of the vineyard saw it, and he said, unto
- 1:00Speaker 1: his servant, it grieveth me that I should lose this tree. Wherefore,
- 1:05Speaker 1: go and pluck the branches from a wild olive tree,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and bring them hither unto me. And we will pluck
- 1:11Speaker 1: off those main branches which are beginning to wither away,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and we will cast them into the fire, that they
- 1:17Speaker 1: may be burned. And behold saith the Lord of the vineyard.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I take away many of these young and tender branches,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and I will graft them whithersoever I will. And it
- 1:27Speaker 1: mattereth not that if it so be that the root
- 1:29Speaker 1: of this tree will perish, I may preserve the fruit
- 1:32Speaker 1: thereof unto myself. Therefore, I will take these young and
- 1:36Speaker 1: tender branches, and I will graft them whithersoever. I will
- 1:40Speaker 1: take thou the branches of the wild olive tree and
- 1:43Speaker 1: graft them in in the stead thereof. And these which
- 1:46Speaker 1: I have plucked off, I will cast into the fire
- 1:49Speaker 1: and burn them, that they may not cumber the ground
- 1:51Speaker 1: of my vineyard. And it came to pass that the
- 1:54Speaker 1: servant of the Lord of the Vineyard did, according to
- 1:56Speaker 1: the word of the Lord of the Vineyard, and graft
- 1:59Speaker 1: it in the branch of the wild olive tree, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: the Lord of the vineyard caused that it should be
- 2:04Speaker 1: digged about and pruned and nourished, saying, unto his servant,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it grieveth me that I should lose this tree. Wherefore,
- 2:12Speaker 1: that perhaps I might preserve the roots thereof, that they perish,
- 2:15Speaker 1: not that I might preserve them unto myself. I have
- 2:18Speaker 1: done this thing. Wherefore go thy way, watch the tree
- 2:22Speaker 1: and nourish it according to my words. And these will
- 2:26Speaker 1: I place in the nethermost part of my vineyard, whithersoever
- 2:29Speaker 1: I will it mattereth not unto thee. And I do
- 2:32Speaker 1: it that I may preserve unto myself, the natural branches
- 2:35Speaker 1: of the tree, and also that I may lay up
- 2:37Speaker 1: fruit thereof against the season unto myself, For it grieveth
- 2:41Speaker 1: me that I should lose this tree and the fruit thereof.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lord of the
- 2:46Speaker 1: vineyard went his way and hid the natural branches of
- 2:49Speaker 1: the tame olive tree in the nethermost parts of the vineyard,
- 2:53Speaker 1: some in one and some in another, according to his
- 2:56Speaker 1: will and pleasure. And it came to pass that a
- 2:59Speaker 1: lot long time passed away, and the Lord of the
- 3:02Speaker 1: vineyard said unto his servant, come, let us go down
- 3:06Speaker 1: into the vineyard, that we may labor in the vineyard.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and also the servant, went down into the vineyard to labor.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the servant said, unto
- 3:17Speaker 1: his master, behold, look here, behold the tree. And it
- 3:22Speaker 1: came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard looked
- 3:24Speaker 1: and beheld the tree in which the wild olive branches
- 3:28Speaker 1: had been grafted, and it had sprung forth and begun
- 3:31Speaker 1: to bear fruit. And he beheld that it was good,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and the fruit thereof was like and too the natural fruit.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And he said, unto the servant, behold, the branches of
- 3:40Speaker 1: the wild tree have taken hold of the moisture of
- 3:42Speaker 1: the root thereof, that the root thereof hath brought forth
- 3:46Speaker 1: much strength. And because of the much strength of the
- 3:48Speaker 1: root thereof, the wild branches have brought forth tame fruit. Now,
- 3:53Speaker 1: if we had not grafted in these branches, the tree
- 3:55Speaker 1: thereof would have perished. And now behold, I will lay
- 3:59Speaker 1: up much fruit which the tree thereof hath brought forth.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And the fruit thereof I will lay up against the season,
- 4:05Speaker 1: unto mine own self. And it came to pass to
- 4:08Speaker 1: the Lord of the vineyard said, unto the servant, come,
- 4:12Speaker 1: let us go to the nethermost part of the vineyard,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and behold that the natural branches of the tree have
- 4:17Speaker 1: not brought forth much fruit, also that I may lay
- 4:21Speaker 1: up of the fruit thereof against the season, unto mine
- 4:23Speaker 1: own self. And it came to pass that they went
- 4:26Speaker 1: forth whither the master had hid the natural branches of
- 4:29Speaker 1: the tree, and he said, unto the servant, behold these,
- 4:34Speaker 1: and he beheld the first that it had brought forth
- 4:36Speaker 1: much fruit. And he beheld also that it was good.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And he said, unto the servant, take of the fruit thereof,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and lay it up against the season, that I may
- 4:47Speaker 1: preserve it unto mine own self. For behold, said he,
- 4:51Speaker 1: this long time have I nourished it, and it hath
- 4:53Speaker 1: brought forth much fruit. And it came to pass that
- 4:57Speaker 1: the servant said, unto his master, how comes thou hither
- 5:00Speaker 1: to plant this tree or this branch of the tree.
- 5:03Speaker 1: For behold, it was the poorest spot in all the
- 5:05Speaker 1: land of thy vineyard. And the Lord of the vineyard
- 5:08Speaker 1: said unto him, counsel me, not I knew that it
- 5:12Speaker 1: was a poor spot of ground. Wherefore I said, unto
- 5:15Speaker 1: thee I have nourished it this long time, and thou
- 5:17Speaker 1: beholdest that it hath brought forth much fruit. And it
- 5:21Speaker 1: came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard said,
- 5:23Speaker 1: unto his servant, look hither, behold, I have planted another
- 5:27Speaker 1: branch of the tree also, And thou knowest that this
- 5:30Speaker 1: spot of ground was poorer than the first. But behold
- 5:34Speaker 1: the tree. I have nourished it this long time, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: it hath brought forth much fruit. Therefore, gather it and
- 5:40Speaker 1: lay it up against the season, that I may preserve
- 5:42Speaker 1: it unto mine own self. And it came to pass
- 5:46Speaker 1: that the Lord of the vineyard said, again unto his servant,
- 5:49Speaker 1: look hither, and behold another branch also, which I have planted.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Behold that I have nourished it also, and it hath
- 5:56Speaker 1: brought forth fruit. And he said, unto the servant, look
- 6:00Speaker 1: hither and behold the last. Behold this have I planted
- 6:04Speaker 1: in a good spot of ground, and I have nourished
- 6:07Speaker 1: it this long time. And only a part of the
- 6:09Speaker 1: tree hath brought forth tame fruit, and the other part
- 6:12Speaker 1: of the tree hath brought forth wild fruit. Behold, I
- 6:15Speaker 1: have nourished this tree like unto the others. And it
- 6:18Speaker 1: came to pass that the lord of the vineyard said,
- 6:21Speaker 1: unto the servant, pluck off the branches that have not
- 6:24Speaker 1: brought forth good fruit, and cast them into the fire.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But behold, the servant said unto him, let us prune
- 6:32Speaker 1: it and dig about it, and nourish it a little longer,
- 6:35Speaker 1: that perhaps it may bring forth good fruit unto thee,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that thou canst lay it up against the season. And
- 6:43Speaker 1: it came to pass that the lord of the vineyard
- 6:45Speaker 1: and the servant of the Lord of the vineyard did
- 6:47Speaker 1: nourish all the fruit of the vineyard. And it came
- 6:50Speaker 1: to pass that a long time had passed away. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: the Lord of the vineyard said, unto his servant, come,
- 6:57Speaker 1: let us go down into the vineyard, that we may
- 7:00Speaker 1: labor again in the vineyard. For behold, the time draweth near,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and the end soon cometh. Wherefore I must lay up
- 7:06Speaker 1: fruit against the season, unto mine own self. And it
- 7:11Speaker 1: came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard and
- 7:13Speaker 1: the servant went down into the vineyard, and they came
- 7:15Speaker 1: to the tree whose natural branches had been broken off,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and the wild branches had been grafted in. And behold,
- 7:21Speaker 1: all sorts of fruit did cumber the tree. And it
- 7:25Speaker 1: came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard did
- 7:26Speaker 1: taste of the fruit, every sort according to its number.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And the Lord of the vineyard said, behold, this long
- 7:33Speaker 1: time have we nourished this tree, And I have laid
- 7:35Speaker 1: up unto myself against the seas, and much fruit. But
- 7:38Speaker 1: behold this time it hath brought forth much fruit, and
- 7:41Speaker 1: there is none of it which is good. And behold
- 7:44Speaker 1: there are all kinds of bad fruit. And it profiteth
- 7:47Speaker 1: me nothing, notwithstanding all our labor. And now it grieveth
- 7:51Speaker 1: me that I should lose this tree. And the Lord
- 7:54Speaker 1: of the vineyard set unto the servant, what shall we
- 7:57Speaker 1: do unto the tree, that I may preserve again good
- 7:59Speaker 1: fruit thereof unto mine own self. And the servant said,
- 8:03Speaker 1: unto his master, behold, because thou didst graft in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: branches of the wild olive tree, they have nourished the roots,
- 8:11Speaker 1: that they are alive, and they have not perished. Wherefore
- 8:14Speaker 1: thou beholdest that they are yet good. And it came
- 8:17Speaker 1: to pass that the Lord of the vineyard said, unto
- 8:19Speaker 1: his servant, the tree profiteth me nothing, and the roots
- 8:23Speaker 1: thereof profit me nothing, so long as it shall bring
- 8:25Speaker 1: forth evil fruit. Nevertheless, I know that the roots are good,
- 8:29Speaker 1: and for mine own purpose I have preserved them. And
- 8:33Speaker 1: because of their much strength, they have hitherto brought forth
- 8:37Speaker 1: from the wild branches good fruit. But behold, the wild
- 8:40Speaker 1: branches have grown and have overrun the roots thereof. And
- 8:44Speaker 1: because that the wild branches have overcome the roots thereof,
- 8:48Speaker 1: it hath brought forth much evil fruit. And because that
- 8:51Speaker 1: it hath brought forth so much evil fruit, thou beholdest
- 8:55Speaker 1: that it beginneth to perish, and it will soon become ripened,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that it may be passed into the fire, except we
- 9:01Speaker 1: should do something for it to preserve it. And it
- 9:04Speaker 1: came to pass that the Lord of the vineyard said,
- 9:07Speaker 1: unto his servant, let us go down into the nethermost
- 9:10Speaker 1: parts of the vineyard, and behold, if the natural branches
- 9:13Speaker 1: have also brought forth evil fruit. And it came to
- 9:16Speaker 1: pass that they went down into the nethermost parts of
- 9:19Speaker 1: the vineyard, and it came to pass that they beheld
- 9:22Speaker 1: that the fruit of the natural branches had become corrupt also, yea,
- 9:26Speaker 1: the first, and the second, and also the last, and
- 9:30Speaker 1: they had all become corrupt, And the wild fruit of
- 9:34Speaker 1: the last had overcome that part of the tree which
- 9:36Speaker 1: brought forth good fruit, even that the branch had withered
- 9:40Speaker 1: away and died. And it came to pass that the
- 9:43Speaker 1: Lord of the vineyard wept and said, unto the servant,
- 9:47Speaker 1: what could I have done more for my vineyard? Behold,
- 9:51Speaker 1: I knew that all the fruit of the vineyard, save
- 9:54Speaker 1: it were these had become corrupted. And now these which
- 9:58Speaker 1: have once brought forth good fruit have also become corrupted.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And now all the trees of my vineyard are good
- 10:04Speaker 1: for nothing, save it be to be hewn down and
- 10:07Speaker 1: cast into the fire. And behold, this last, whose branch
- 10:11Speaker 1: had withered away, I did plant in a good spot
- 10:14Speaker 1: of ground, yea, even that which was choice unto me
- 10:17Speaker 1: above all other parts of the land of my vineyard.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And thou beheldest that I also cut down that which
- 10:23Speaker 1: cumbered this spot of ground, that I might plant this
- 10:26Speaker 1: tree in the stead thereof. And thou beheldest that a
- 10:29Speaker 1: part thereof brought forth good fruit, and a part thereof
- 10:32Speaker 1: brought forth wild fruit. And because I plucked not the
- 10:35Speaker 1: branches thereof and cast them into the fire, Behold, they
- 10:38Speaker 1: have overcome the good branch that it hath withered away.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And now behold, notwithstanding all the care which we have
- 10:45Speaker 1: taken of my vineyard, the trees thereof have become corrupted,
- 10:48Speaker 1: that they bring forth no good fruit. And these I
- 10:52Speaker 1: had hoped to preserve, to have laid up fruit thereof
- 10:54Speaker 1: against the season, unto mine own self. But behold, they
- 10:58Speaker 1: have become like unto the wild olive tree, and they
- 11:00Speaker 1: are of no worth but to be hewn down and
- 11:03Speaker 1: cast into the fire. And it grieveth me that I
- 11:05Speaker 1: should lose them. But what could I have done more?
- 11:08Speaker 1: In my vineyard? Have I slackened mine hand? That I
- 11:12Speaker 1: have not nourished it? Nay, I have nourished it, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: I have digged about it, and I have pruned it,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and I have dunged it. And I have stretched forth
- 11:20Speaker 1: mine hand almost all the day long, And the end
- 11:23Speaker 1: draweth nigh. And it grieveth me that I should hew
- 11:25Speaker 1: down all the trees of my vineyard and cast them
- 11:28Speaker 1: into the fire, that they should be burned. Who is
- 11:31Speaker 1: it that has corrupted my vineyard? And it came to
- 11:34Speaker 1: pass that the servant said, unto his master, is it
- 11:37Speaker 1: not the loftiness of thy vineyard? Have not the branches
- 11:40Speaker 1: thereof overcome the roots which are good? And because the
- 11:43Speaker 1: branches have overcome the roots thereof, behold, they grew faster
- 11:47Speaker 1: than the strength of the roots, taking strength unto themselves. Behold,
- 11:51Speaker 1: they say, is not this the cause that the trees
- 11:54Speaker 1: of thy vineyard have become corrupted? And it came to
- 11:57Speaker 1: pass that the Lord of the vineyard said, unto the servant,
- 12:00Speaker 1: let us go to and hew down the trees of
- 12:02Speaker 1: the vineyard, and cast them into the fire, that they
- 12:04Speaker 1: shall not cumber the ground of my vineyard. For I
- 12:07Speaker 1: have done all what could I have done more for
- 12:10Speaker 1: my vineyard. But behold, the servant said, unto the lord
- 12:13Speaker 1: the vineyard, spare it a little longer. And the Lord said, yea,
- 12:19Speaker 1: I will spare it a little longer, for it grieveth
- 12:21Speaker 1: me that I should lose the trees of my vineyard. Wherefore,
- 12:24Speaker 1: let us take of the branches of these which I
- 12:26Speaker 1: have planted in the nethermost parts of my vineyard, and
- 12:29Speaker 1: let us graft them into the tree from whence they came.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And let us pluck from the tree those branches whose
- 12:35Speaker 1: fruit is most bitter, and graft in the natural branches
- 12:39Speaker 1: of the tree in the stead thereof. And this while
- 12:41Speaker 1: I do, that the tree may not perish, that perhaps
- 12:44Speaker 1: I may preserve unto myself the roots thereof for mine
- 12:47Speaker 1: own purpose. And behold the roots of the natural branches
- 12:51Speaker 1: of the tree which I have planted, whithersoever I would
- 12:54Speaker 1: are yet alive, wherefore that I may preserve them also
- 12:58Speaker 1: for mine own purpose. I will take of the branches
- 13:01Speaker 1: of this tree, and I will graft them in unto them. Yea,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I will graft in unto them the branches of their
- 13:07Speaker 1: mother tree, that I may preserve the roots also unto
- 13:10Speaker 1: mine own self, that when they shall be sufficiently strong,
- 13:13Speaker 1: perhaps they may bring forth good fruit unto me, and
- 13:16Speaker 1: I may yet have glory in the fruit of my vineyard.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they took from the
- 13:21Speaker 1: natural tree which had become wild, and grafted in unto
- 13:24Speaker 1: the natural trees which also had become wild. And they
- 13:28Speaker 1: also took of the natural trees which had become wild,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and grafted in to their mother tree. And the Lord
- 13:34Speaker 1: of the vineyard set unto the servant pluck not the
- 13:37Speaker 1: wild branches from the trees, save it be those which
- 13:40Speaker 1: are most bitter, And in them ye shall graft according
- 13:43Speaker 1: to that which I have said. And we will nourish
- 13:46Speaker 1: again the trees of the vineyard, and we will trim
- 13:49Speaker 1: up the branches thereof, and we will pluck from the
- 13:51Speaker 1: trees those branches which are ripened, that they must perish,
- 13:55Speaker 1: and cast them into the fire. And this I do,
- 13:58Speaker 1: that perhaps the roots thereof may take strength because of
- 14:01Speaker 1: their goodness, and because of the change of the branches,
- 14:04Speaker 1: that the good may overcome the evil. And because that
- 14:08Speaker 1: I have preserved the natural branches and the roots thereof,
- 14:10Speaker 1: and that I have grafted in the natural branches again
- 14:13Speaker 1: into their mother tree, and have preserved the roots of
- 14:16Speaker 1: their mother tree, that perhaps the trees of my vineyard
- 14:20Speaker 1: may bring forth again good fruit, and that I may
- 14:22Speaker 1: have joy again in the fruit of my vineyard. And
- 14:25Speaker 1: perhaps that I may rejoice exceedingly that I have preserved
- 14:29Speaker 1: the roots of the branches of the first fruit. Wherefore,
- 14:32Speaker 1: go to and call servants, that we may labor diligently
- 14:35Speaker 1: with our might in the vineyard, that we may prepare
- 14:38Speaker 1: the way that I may bring forth again the natural fruit,
- 14:41Speaker 1: which natural fruit is good and most precious above all
- 14:45Speaker 1: other fruit. Wherefore let us go to and labor with
- 14:48Speaker 1: our might this last time, for behold, the end draweth nigh.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And this is for the last time that I shall
- 14:55Speaker 1: prune my vineyard graft in the branches, begin at the last,
- 14:59Speaker 1: that they may be first, and that the first may
- 15:02Speaker 1: be last. And dig about the trees, both old and young,
- 15:05Speaker 1: the first and the last, and the last and the first,
- 15:09Speaker 1: that all may be nourished once again for the last time. Wherefore,
- 15:14Speaker 1: dig about them, and prune them and dung them once
- 15:17Speaker 1: more for the last time. For the end draweth nigh.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And if it be so that these last grafts shall
- 15:23Speaker 1: grow and bring forth the natural fruit, then shall ye
- 15:27Speaker 1: prepare the way for them, that they may grow. And
- 15:30Speaker 1: as they begin to grow, ye shall clear away the
- 15:32Speaker 1: branches which bring forth bitter fruit, according to the strength
- 15:35Speaker 1: of the good and the size thereof. And ye shall
- 15:38Speaker 1: not clear away the bad thereof all at once, lest
- 15:41Speaker 1: the roots thereof should be too strong for the graft,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and the graft thereof shall perish, and I lose the
- 15:46Speaker 1: trees of my vineyard. For it grieveth me that I
- 15:49Speaker 1: should lose the trees of my vineyard. Wherefore ye shall
- 15:52Speaker 1: clear away the bad according as the good shall grow,
- 15:55Speaker 1: that the root and the top may be equal in strength,
- 15:58Speaker 1: until the good shall overcome the bad, and the bad
- 16:00Speaker 1: be hewn down and cast into the fire, that they
- 16:03Speaker 1: cumber not the ground of my vineyard. And thus will
- 16:06Speaker 1: I sweep away the bad out of my vineyard, and
- 16:09Speaker 1: the branches of the natural tree, will I graft in
- 16:12Speaker 1: again into the natural tree, and the branches of the
- 16:15Speaker 1: natural tree. Will I graft into the natural branches of
- 16:18Speaker 1: the tree. And thus will I bring them together again,
- 16:21Speaker 1: that they shall bring forth the natural fruit, and they
- 16:24Speaker 1: shall be won, and the bad shall be cast away,
- 16:27Speaker 1: yea even out of all the land of my vineyard.
- 16:29Speaker 1: For behold only this once will I prune my vineyard.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the lord of the
- 16:35Speaker 1: vineyard sent his servant, and the servant went and did
- 16:38Speaker 1: as the lord had commanded him, and brought other servants.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And they were few, And the Lord of the vineyard
- 16:44Speaker 1: said unto them, go to and labor in the vineyard
- 16:47Speaker 1: with your might. For behold, this is the last time
- 16:50Speaker 1: that I shall nourish my vineyard. For the end is
- 16:52Speaker 1: nigh at hand, and the season speedily cometh. And if
- 16:55Speaker 1: ye labor with your might with me, ye shall have
- 16:58Speaker 1: joy in the fruit which I shall unto myself against
- 17:01Speaker 1: the time which will soon come. And it came to
- 17:04Speaker 1: pass that the servants did go and labor with their mights,
- 17:08Speaker 1: and the Lord of the vineyard labored also with them,
- 17:11Speaker 1: and they did obey the commandments of the Lord of
- 17:13Speaker 1: the vineyard in all things. And there began to be
- 17:16Speaker 1: the natural fruit again in the vineyard, and the natural
- 17:19Speaker 1: branches began to grow and thrive exceedingly, and the wild
- 17:23Speaker 1: branches began to be plucked off and to be cast away.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And they did keep the root and the top thereof,
- 17:28Speaker 1: equal according to the strength thereof. And thus they labored
- 17:32Speaker 1: with all diligence, according to the commandments of the Lord
- 17:35Speaker 1: of the vineyard, even until the bad had been cast
- 17:37Speaker 1: away out of the vineyard. And the Lord had preserved
- 17:40Speaker 1: unto himself, that the trees had become again the natural fruit,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and they became like unto one body, and the fruits
- 17:47Speaker 1: were equal. And the Lord of the vineyard had preserved
- 17:50Speaker 1: unto himself the natural fruit, which was most precious unto
- 17:53Speaker 1: him from the beginning. And it came to pass that
- 17:57Speaker 1: when the lord of the vineyard saw that his fruit
- 17:59Speaker 1: was good and that his vineyard was no more corrupt,
- 18:03Speaker 1: he called up his servants and said unto them, behold,
- 18:07Speaker 1: for this last time have we nourished my vineyard. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: thou beholdest that I have done according to my will,
- 18:13Speaker 1: and I have preserved the natural fruit. That it is good,
- 18:17Speaker 1: even like as it was in the beginning. And blessed
- 18:19Speaker 1: art thou, for because ye have been diligent in laboring
- 18:22Speaker 1: with me in my vineyard, and have kept my commandments,
- 18:25Speaker 1: and have brought unto me again the natural fruit, that
- 18:28Speaker 1: my vineyard is no more corrupted, and the bad is
- 18:31Speaker 1: cast away. Behold, ye shall have joy with me because
- 18:35Speaker 1: of the fruit of my vineyard. For behold, for a
- 18:38Speaker 1: long time will I lay up of the fruit of
- 18:40Speaker 1: my vineyard unto mine own self, against the season which
- 18:44Speaker 1: speedily cometh. And for the last time have I nourished
- 18:47Speaker 1: my vineyard and pruned it, and dug about it and
- 18:50Speaker 1: dunged it. Wherefore I will lay up unto mine own
- 18:54Speaker 1: self of the fruit for a long time, according to
- 18:56Speaker 1: that which I have spoken, And when the time cometh,
- 19:00Speaker 1: that evil fruit shall again come into my vineyard. Then
- 19:03Speaker 1: will I cause the good and the bad to be gathered,
- 19:06Speaker 1: And the good will I preserve unto myself, and the
- 19:09Speaker 1: bad will I cast away into its own place. And
- 19:12Speaker 1: then cometh the season and the end, and my vineyard
- 19:15Speaker 1: will I cause to be burned with fire Jacob chapter six.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And now behold, my brethren, as I said unto you
- 19:25Speaker 1: that I would prophesy, behold, this is my prophecy, that
- 19:28Speaker 1: the things which this prophet Zenus spake concerning the House
- 19:32Speaker 1: of Israel, in the which he likened them unto a
- 19:34Speaker 1: tame olive tree, must surely come to pass. And the
- 19:38Speaker 1: day that he shall set his hand again the second
- 19:40Speaker 1: time to recover his people is to day yea even
- 19:43Speaker 1: the last time, that the servants of the Lord shall
- 19:46Speaker 1: go forth in his power to nourish and prune his vineyard.
- 19:49Speaker 1: And after that the end soon cometh. And how blest
- 19:53Speaker 1: are they who have labored diligently in his vineyard, And
- 19:56Speaker 1: how cursed are they who shall be cast out into
- 19:59Speaker 1: their own place, and the world shall be burned with fire?
- 20:03Speaker 1: And how merciful is our God unto us, for he
- 20:06Speaker 1: remembereth the house of Israel, both roots and branches, and
- 20:09Speaker 1: he stretches forth his hands unto them all the day long,
- 20:13Speaker 1: and they are as stiff necked, and again saying people.
- 20:17Speaker 1: But as many as will not harden their hearts shall
- 20:19Speaker 1: be saved in the Kingdom of God. Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I beseech of you in words of soberness, that ye
- 20:25Speaker 1: would repent and come with full purpose of heart, and
- 20:28Speaker 1: cleave unto God as He cleaveth unto you. And while
- 20:32Speaker 1: His arm of mercies extended toward you in the light
- 20:35Speaker 1: of the day, harden not your hearts, yea to day,
- 20:39Speaker 1: if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts,
- 20:42Speaker 1: For why will ye die? For Behold, after ye have
- 20:45Speaker 1: been nourished by the good word of God all the
- 20:48Speaker 1: day long, will ye bring forth evil fruit that ye
- 20:51Speaker 1: must be hewn down and cast into the fire? Behold,
- 20:55Speaker 1: will ye reject these words? Will ye reject the words
- 20:59Speaker 1: of the prophet? And will ye reject all the words
- 21:02Speaker 1: which have been spoken concerning Christ? After so many have
- 21:06Speaker 1: spoken concerning Him, and deny the good word of Christ
- 21:10Speaker 1: and the power of God and the gift of the
- 21:12Speaker 1: Holy Ghost. And quench the Holy Spirit, and make a
- 21:15Speaker 1: mock of the great plan of redemption which hath been
- 21:18Speaker 1: laid for You know ye not, that if ye will
- 21:21Speaker 1: do these things, that the power of the redemption and
- 21:24Speaker 1: the resurrection which is in Christ will bring you to
- 21:27Speaker 1: stand with shame and awful guilt before the bar of God,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and according to the power of justice, For justice cannot
- 21:35Speaker 1: be denied. Ye must go away into that lake of
- 21:38Speaker 1: fire and brimstone, whose flames are unquenchable, and whose smoke
- 21:42Speaker 1: sendeth up forever and ever. Which lake of fire and
- 21:45Speaker 1: brimstone is endless torment. Oh, then, my beloved brethren, repent
- 21:52Speaker 1: ye and enter in at the strait gate, and continue
- 21:55Speaker 1: in the way which is narrow, until ye shall obtain
- 21:58Speaker 1: eternal life. Oh be wise, what can I say more?
- 22:03Speaker 1: Finally I bid you farewell until I shall meet you
- 22:07Speaker 1: before the pleasing bar of God, which bar striketh the
- 22:11Speaker 1: wicked with awful dread and fear, Amen Jacob, Chapter seven.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And now it came to pass, after some years had
- 22:21Speaker 1: passed away, there came a man among the people of Nephi,
- 22:24Speaker 1: whose name was Cheram. And it came to pass that
- 22:27Speaker 1: he began to preach among the people and to declare
- 22:29Speaker 1: unto them that there should be no Christ. And he
- 22:33Speaker 1: preached many things which were flattering unto the people. And
- 22:36Speaker 1: this he did that he might overthrow the doctrine of Christ.
- 22:39Speaker 1: And he labored diligently that he might lead away the
- 22:42Speaker 1: hearts of the people, insomuch that he did lead away
- 22:45Speaker 1: many hearts. And he, knowing that I, Jacob had faith
- 22:49Speaker 1: in Christ who should come, he sought much opportunity that
- 22:52Speaker 1: he might come unto me. And he was learned that
- 22:55Speaker 1: he had a perfect knowledge of the language of the people,
- 22:59Speaker 1: wherefore he could year use much flattery and much power
- 23:01Speaker 1: of speech, according to the power of the devil. And
- 23:04Speaker 1: he had hope to shake me from the faith, notwithstanding
- 23:07Speaker 1: the many revelations and the many things which I had
- 23:10Speaker 1: seen concerning these things, For I truly had seen angels,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and they administered unto me. And also I had heard
- 23:17Speaker 1: the voice of the Lord speaking unto me in very
- 23:20Speaker 1: word from time to time, wherefore I could not be shaken.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he came unto me.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And on this wise did he speak unto me, saying,
- 23:30Speaker 1: brother Jacob, I have sought much opportunity that I might
- 23:33Speaker 1: speak unto you. For I have heard and also know
- 23:36Speaker 1: that thou goest about much preaching that which ye call
- 23:39Speaker 1: the Gospel or the doctrine of Christ. And ye have
- 23:42Speaker 1: led away much of this people, that they pervert the
- 23:45Speaker 1: right way of God, and keep not the law of Moses,
- 23:48Speaker 1: which is the right way, and convert the law of
- 23:50Speaker 1: Moses into the worship of a being which ye say
- 23:53Speaker 1: shall come many hundred years hence. And now behold I
- 23:56Speaker 1: share him, declare unto you that this is blasphemy. For
- 23:59Speaker 1: no man knoweth of such things, for he cannot tell
- 24:02Speaker 1: of things to come. And after this manner did Shareham
- 24:05Speaker 1: contend against me. But behold, the Lord God poured in
- 24:09Speaker 1: his spirit into my soul insomuch that I did confound
- 24:13Speaker 1: him in all his words. And I said, unto him,
- 24:17Speaker 1: deniest thou the Christ who shall come? And he said,
- 24:21Speaker 1: if there should be a Christ, I would not deny him.
- 24:25Speaker 1: But I know that there is no Christ, neither has been,
- 24:28Speaker 1: nor ever will be. And I said, unto him, believest
- 24:33Speaker 1: thou the scriptures? And he said yea. And I said,
- 24:38Speaker 1: unto him, then ye do not understand them, for they
- 24:41Speaker 1: truly testify of Christ. Behold, I say unto you that
- 24:45Speaker 1: none of the prophets have written or prophesied, save they
- 24:48Speaker 1: have spoken concerning this Christ. And this is not all.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It has been made manifest unto me, for I have
- 24:55Speaker 1: heard and seen, and it also has been made manifest
- 24:58Speaker 1: unto me by the power of the Holy Wherefore I
- 25:01Speaker 1: know if there should be no atonement made, all mankind
- 25:05Speaker 1: must be lost. And it came to pass that he said,
- 25:08Speaker 1: unto me, show me a sign by this power of
- 25:11Speaker 1: the Holy Ghost, in which ye knows so much. And
- 25:15Speaker 1: I said, unto him, what am I that I should
- 25:18Speaker 1: tempt God to show unto thee a sign in the
- 25:21Speaker 1: thing which thou knowest to be true. Yet thou wilt
- 25:24Speaker 1: deny it, because thou art of the devil. Nevertheless, not
- 25:28Speaker 1: mine will be done. But if God shall smite thee,
- 25:32Speaker 1: let that be a sign unto thee that He has
- 25:34Speaker 1: power both in heaven and in earth. And also that
- 25:37Speaker 1: Christ shall come, and thy willow Lord be done, and
- 25:40Speaker 1: not mine. And it came to pass that when I
- 25:44Speaker 1: Jacob had spoken these words, the power of the Lord
- 25:47Speaker 1: came upon him insomuch that he fell to the earth.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he was nourished for
- 25:52Speaker 1: the space of many days. And it came to pass
- 25:55Speaker 1: that he said, unto the people gathered together on the morrow,
- 25:59Speaker 1: for I shall die. Wherefore I desire to speak unto
- 26:02Speaker 1: the people before I shall die. And it came to
- 26:05Speaker 1: pass that on the morrow the multitude were gathered together,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and he spake plainly unto them, and denied the things
- 26:12Speaker 1: which he had taught them, and confessed the Christ and
- 26:15Speaker 1: the power of the Holy Ghost, and the ministering of angels.
- 26:19Speaker 1: And he spake plainly unto them that he had been
- 26:22Speaker 1: deceived by the power of the devil. And he spake
- 26:25Speaker 1: of hell, and of eternity, and of eternal punishment. And
- 26:29Speaker 1: he said, I fear lest I have committed the unpardonable sin,
- 26:35Speaker 1: for I have lied unto God. For I denied the Christ,
- 26:38Speaker 1: and said that I believed the scriptures, and they truly
- 26:42Speaker 1: testify of Him. And because I have thus lied unto God,
- 26:46Speaker 1: I greatly fear lest my case shall be awful. But
- 26:51Speaker 1: I confess unto God. And it came to pass that
- 26:54Speaker 1: when he had said these words, he could say no more,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and he gave up the ghost. And when the multitude
- 27:01Speaker 1: had witnessed that he spake these things as he was
- 27:04Speaker 1: about to give up the ghost. They were astonished exceedingly
- 27:07Speaker 1: insomuch that the power of God came down upon them,
- 27:11Speaker 1: and they were overcome that they fell to the earth.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Now this thing was pleasing unto me, Jacob, for I
- 27:17Speaker 1: had requested it of my father, who was in heaven.
- 27:21Speaker 1: For he had heard my cry and answered my prayer.
- 27:24Speaker 1: And it came to pass that peace and the love
- 27:26Speaker 1: of God was restored again among the people. And they
- 27:29Speaker 1: searched the scriptures, and hearkened no more to the words
- 27:32Speaker 1: of this wicked man. And it came to pass that
- 27:35Speaker 1: many means were devised to reclaim and restore the Lamanites
- 27:38Speaker 1: to the knowledge of the truth. But it was all vain,
- 27:41Speaker 1: for they delighted in wars and bloodshed, and they had
- 27:45Speaker 1: an eternal hatred against us, their brethren, and they sought,
- 27:49Speaker 1: by the power of their arms to destroy us continually.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Wherefore the people of Nephi did fortify against them with
- 27:55Speaker 1: their arms and with all their might, trusting in the
- 27:58Speaker 1: God and Rock of their salvation. Wherefore they became as
- 28:01Speaker 1: yet conquerors of their enemies. And it came to pass,
- 28:06Speaker 1: that I, Jacob began to be old, and the record
- 28:10Speaker 1: of this people being kept on the other plates of Nephi.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Wherefore I conclude this record, declaring that I have written
- 28:16Speaker 1: according to the best of my knowledge, by saying that
- 28:20Speaker 1: the time passed away with us, and also our lives
- 28:22Speaker 1: passed away, like as it were unto us a dream,
- 28:26Speaker 1: we being a lonesome and a solemn people, wanderers cast
- 28:30Speaker 1: out from Jerusalem, born in tribulation in a wilderness, and
- 28:35Speaker 1: hated of our brethren, which caused wars and contentions. Wherefore
- 28:39Speaker 1: we did mourn out our days. And I, Jacob, saw
- 28:42Speaker 1: that I must soon go down to my grave. Wherefore
- 28:45Speaker 1: I said, unto my son Enos, take these plates, and
- 28:49Speaker 1: I told him the things which my brother Nephi had
- 28:52Speaker 1: commanded me. And he promised obedience unto the commands. And
- 28:56Speaker 1: I make an end of my writing upon these plates,
- 28:59Speaker 1: which writing has been small. And to the reader, I
- 29:02Speaker 1: bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read
- 29:06Speaker 1: my words. Brethren, adieu and of Jacob Chapters five through
- 29:13Speaker 1: seven
