- 0:01Speaker 1: Hollywood.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Lever Brothers Company, the makers of Lux Flakes, bring you
- 0:15Speaker 2: the Lux Radio Theater, starring Betty Grable and Dan Daly
- 0:21Speaker 2: in Mother Wore Tights.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. William Keeley. Greetings from Hollywood,
- 0:35Speaker 3: ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:37Speaker 4: One of the great comebacks in the history of the
- 0:39Speaker 4: theater is taking place today.
- 0:42Speaker 3: It's the rebirth of Boatville, which is.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Surprising a new generation with all the boisterous good humor
- 0:48Speaker 4: and colorful variety.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Of the good old days.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Tonight, the Lux Radio Theater reflects the trend of the
- 0:55Speaker 4: times with the 20th Century Fox hit, Mother Wore Tight.
- 0:59Speaker 4: and a team of stars vaudeville might dream about.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Betty Grable and Dan Daly.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Mother Wartite is the story of a vaudeville family and
- 1:10Speaker 4: their backstage life. And naturally, Betty and Dan will sing
- 1:14Speaker 4: those great song hits of the picture. You Do and Kokomo,
- 1:19Speaker 4: Indiana and many more. Today, as always, a theatrical trooper's
- 1:24Speaker 4: home is her trunk. And one of the biggest problems
- 1:27Speaker 4: is keeping costumes fresh. That's where Lux Flakes gets into
- 1:31Speaker 4: the act, because anyone who travels a lot is thankful
- 1:35Speaker 4: for the convenience and efficiency of Lux Flakes. Now, here's
- 1:39Speaker 4: the first act of Mother War types, starring Betty Grable
- 1:43Speaker 4: as Myrtle and Dan Daly as Frank.
- 1:47Speaker 5: M is for the million things she gave me. O
- 1:56Speaker 5: means only that she's growing old.
- 2:02Speaker 6: There she is, sitting in the rocking chair on the
- 2:05Speaker 6: front porch.
- 2:06Speaker 3: That sweet, dark, gentle old lady. She's knitting.
- 2:10Speaker 6: Knitting another sweater for Father. Seeing her like this, who
- 2:14Speaker 6: would ever dream that Mother ever behaved like... Well, like this.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Mother wore... Mother.
- 2:37Speaker 6: Wore tights when she sang that song on stage.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Oh, good heavens, Mother, how could you?
- 2:47Speaker 6: And there on the porch is Daddy. The cutest little
- 2:55Speaker 6: darling in the world.
- 2:57Speaker 7: Chair, his eyeglasses pushed up on.
- 2:59Speaker 6: His forehead, and the Sunday funny papers spread over his lap.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Dag, the quiet type.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I just can't imagine.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Him out there on the stage in those baggy pants
- 3:08Speaker 6: and a putty nose, and that song he used to sing.
- 3:16Speaker 3: At Burlington 30, I rise at 10.30 and stroll along
- 3:20Speaker 3: like a dog.
- 3:21Speaker 8: I walk down.
- 3:22Speaker 3: The street with my clothes on my hand and I
- 3:27Speaker 3: walk down a guy in the water.
- 3:30Speaker 9: I'm all airs and greats.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Without food so long, I forgot where my face is.
- 3:37Speaker 9: I'm Burlington.
- 3:38Speaker 3: To really understand how Mother happened to wear her tight,
- 3:42Speaker 3: let's go back some 40 years to when Mother.
- 3:46Speaker 9: Graduated from high school.
- 3:47Speaker 3: The next afternoon, she and a couple of friends went downtown.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Girls, I don't want to be a telephone operator. I'd
- 4:06Speaker 1: rather be dead. Why, Bessie Flemmerhammer. Well, I would.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Anyhow, it beats what I'm going to be doing.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Standing on my feet all day selling underwear. At least
- 4:16Speaker 1: you'll be in college, Myrtle. Business college. You know, we're
- 4:19Speaker 1: awfully early for my appointment at the telephone company. Well,
- 4:22Speaker 1: let's just window shop. Oh, we could go to a matinee.
- 4:26Speaker 1: A show? Well, why not? My cousin Bubba sells tickets
- 4:30Speaker 1: at Waller's Opera House, and he said any time I
- 4:32Speaker 1: wanted to go, he'd let me in for nothing. Oh,
- 4:33Speaker 1: let's bet he left. And these are my girlfriends, Bubba.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Myrtle McKinley and Alice Spiegel.
- 4:40Speaker 3: How do you do?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Well, we thought... That is, you always said if I
- 4:44Speaker 1: came over to the opera house, Bubba, you'd let me
- 4:46Speaker 1: in free, so I.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Well, I never said anything about your whole school, did I?
- 4:49Speaker 1: Oh, please, Bubba.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Oh, well.
- 4:52Speaker 9: But if Mr.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Waller ever catches me... If Mr. Waller ever catches you
- 4:54Speaker 3: doing what? Oh, no, no, nothing, Mr. Waller. Handing out
- 4:58Speaker 3: free tickets, huh? Oh, no, no, Mr.
- 5:00Speaker 10: Waller.
- 5:00Speaker 4: They just wanted to know if they could get jobs
- 5:03Speaker 4: with the show.
- 5:04Speaker 3: In the chorus. chorus, huh? Yeah. All right, girls, follow me.
- 5:08Speaker 11: We'll talk this over upstairs in my office.
- 5:12Speaker 10: Well?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Well, we're coming, Mr.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Waller.
- 5:15Speaker 11: Well, girls, your figures don't look too bad.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Let me see your legs. Well, ain't you scared, too?
- 5:35Speaker 1: Uh, no, sir. Uh, my legs.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Hmm. That's kind of nice.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I had the lead in our high school operetta.
- 5:45Speaker 7: I'm a dancer.
- 5:47Speaker 9: Oh, fine.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Your folks know about this?
- 5:50Speaker 1: My parents are dead. I live with my grandma.
- 5:53Speaker 3: How much do you want a week, sister?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Would $ 10 be all right?
- 5:57Speaker 3: I was going to offer you $ 15. But just to
- 5:59Speaker 3: teach you a lesson, $ 10 it is. Come on.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Oh, my.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Well, that's how Mother got on the stage.
- 6:12Speaker 6: The headliner at Wallace Opera House was a good-looking, brash
- 6:15Speaker 6: young fellow named Frank Briggs.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Frank was a singing comedian.
- 6:21Speaker 12: As a comedian, well, today we'd call Frank's act awfully corny.
- 6:27Speaker 12: Those ridiculous costumes he wore and the laughs he'd get
- 6:30Speaker 12: by falling in the bass drum or getting hit over
- 6:32Speaker 12: the head.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But in those days.
- 6:34Speaker 13: He really killed the people.
- 6:36Speaker 1: He had a pretty good voice, too.
- 6:41Speaker 14: You sure sell that you-do number, Frankie.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah, what's wrong with my Burlington birdie routine?
- 6:57Speaker 15: Hey, girls.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Girls, any of you, uh, forgive the expression, artistes, want
- 7:02Speaker 3: to speak in part in my Paris blackout next week? Oh,
- 7:05Speaker 3: we want to speak in part. Yeah, but what I
- 7:07Speaker 3: need is a girl who speaks French.
- 7:09Speaker 1: French?
- 7:10Speaker 7: What is it, a character part?
- 7:11Speaker 1: Go away. I can speak a little French, Mr.
- 7:14Speaker 16: Burt.
- 7:14Speaker 3: You can, huh? Say, you're the new kid, ain't you, sweetheart?
- 7:18Speaker 9: All right.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Let me hear you read this line.
- 7:21Speaker 16: Hey, that's swell.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You'll do fine.
- 7:29Speaker 3: We'll have a bite to eat after the show, huh?
- 7:31Speaker 3: I'll run through the business with you, and we can.
- 7:32Speaker 1: The business is right.
- 7:34Speaker 3: By the way, what's your name?
- 7:35Speaker 1: Myrtle McKinley.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Anyone ever tell you you got the prettiest.
- 7:39Speaker 9: I.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we've heard that approach.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yeah, well, in your case, sweetheart, I really mean eyes.
- 7:43Speaker 9: All right, everybody for your next number.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Come on, all of you. See you at the stage entrance, Myrtle,
- 7:46Speaker 3: right after the show.
- 7:47Speaker 8: So, Mother got her start in Frankfurt's Votervillage.
- 7:59Speaker 6: A couple of months later, the company chipped in to
- 8:01Speaker 6: give Frank a birthday party.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He had rushed out right after.
- 8:04Speaker 6: The show, and while they all waited for him to
- 8:05Speaker 6: come back, Mother decided to do an imitation of Frank
- 8:09Speaker 6: singing Burlington Bertie.
- 8:11Speaker 7: All right, now, quiet.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Quiet, everybody.
- 8:13Speaker 7: Merton's going to hand you a laugh.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Here you are, honey. Here's his monocle and cane.
- 8:16Speaker 9: Let's go.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm Burlington Bertie. I ride the 10th Bertie.
- 8:23Speaker 13: And hold you alone like a dog. I walk down
- 8:27Speaker 13: the strand with.
- 8:28Speaker 17: My clubs on my hand, and I walk down again
- 8:31Speaker 17: with a mop.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm all airs and braces, tight jeans and tighters, without
- 8:37Speaker 1: boots or low, I forgot where my base is.
- 8:40Speaker 17: I'm burnt, burnt, I haven't a shirt, but my people are.
- 8:45Speaker 16: Well, you know.
- 8:47Speaker 17: Nearly everyone knows me since Smith's Lord Roseway, I'm Burlington
- 8:52Speaker 17: Bernie from Bow.
- 8:58Speaker 9: Okay, children, let her rip.
- 9:00Speaker 6: You can stop this shindig now because Papa's back.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Well, it's about time you showed up, Frank, just in
- 9:05Speaker 4: case you forgot this party's for you.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 9: Oh, boy, did you miss something just now?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Myrtle, huh? Kind of stealing my thunder, ain't you, Myrtle? Anyway, folks,
- 9:13Speaker 3: today is my birthday. You have all showered me with
- 9:16Speaker 3: lavish gifts of your esteem and gratitude, so what can
- 9:19Speaker 3: I do but return the compliment? All right, Eddie, bring
- 9:21Speaker 3: on the presents. Oh, that's where you've been. Buying presents?
- 9:24Speaker 9: Sure, why not?
- 9:25Speaker 1: Here you are, Helen.
- 9:26Speaker 9: This is for you. And that big box, that's for you, Mrs.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Miller.
- 9:29Speaker 3: And this is for you, Al.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Can you beat it, Myrtle?
- 9:31Speaker 6: Can't even let people give him a birthday party without
- 9:33Speaker 6: trying to top him.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Oh, I think it's sweet. Hey, you're not falling for
- 9:37Speaker 1: that big show-off, are you? Of course not. But he
- 9:40Speaker 1: is kind of nice. Hey, how about a song?
- 9:43Speaker 3: Look, Mertz.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I've seen zombies with eyes like Frank's. Look at the
- 9:47Speaker 1: way he throws his dough away. You'd think he was
- 9:49Speaker 1: a millionaire. Well, he says that's all part of the act.
- 9:51Speaker 1: But you've got to put on a front. Look, Mertz.
- 9:53Speaker 1: You're just plain dumb if you let yourself go for
- 9:56Speaker 1: a whooper.
- 9:56Speaker 3: How are you, Sarah Bernhardt? Still tossing that bustle into
- 9:59Speaker 3: the fire?
- 9:50Speaker 1: I guess it was my own idea.
- 9:51Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 9:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 9: Well, you were great. When did you pick it up?
- 10:21Speaker 1: I've had to watch you for eight weeks, haven't I?
- 10:23Speaker 9: Yeah. I've been watching you, too. You know something, Mert?
- 10:27Speaker 3: You've got more talent in your little finger than all
- 10:30Speaker 3: these crows put together.
- 10:32Speaker 1: That's very nice of you.
- 10:33Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, I've got a funny notion
- 10:36Speaker 3: we might do pretty good as a double.
- 10:38Speaker 1: A double?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Sure. You and me together. You know, a team.
- 10:43Speaker 1: You really think I could?
- 10:45Speaker 3: We'd knock them cold.
- 10:46Speaker 9: Why? Why?
- 10:48Speaker 1: I just don't know what to say.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Well, then don't say anything. Just keep it under your
- 10:51Speaker 3: hat and leave it to me. We'll work something out together, see?
- 10:54Speaker 3: Then we'll spring it on the boss.
- 10:56Speaker 9: Well, is it a deal? I... It's a deal. Oh, my.
- 11:09Speaker 6: In a few weeks, Mother's name was on the posters
- 11:12Speaker 6: in the lobby. Frank Burt, assisted by Myrtle McKinley. Oh,
- 11:16Speaker 6: of course, you had to look twice to find it.
- 11:19Speaker 6: There was another man in their show who was very
- 11:21Speaker 6: fond of Mama.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Roy Bivens.
- 11:23Speaker 6: Roy kept telling her she was crazy to let Frank
- 11:25Speaker 6: get away with it.
- 11:26Speaker 7: That she really made his act.
- 11:28Speaker 1: But that's not so, Roy. Frank's a star and I'm nobody. Besides,
- 11:32Speaker 1: it's his act and it was his idea.
- 11:34Speaker 3: But you're established now, Myrtle. Here's your chance to go places.
- 11:38Speaker 3: And I could help you, Myrtle.
- 11:40Speaker 7: But Mother kept shaking her head no.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Because as far as she was concerned, she'd already gone places.
- 11:47Speaker 1: One night, she and Frank.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Went to an Italian restaurant for supper... The bunch from
- 11:51Speaker 6: the opera house were used to seeing Frank Burt walk
- 11:54Speaker 6: in with a pretty girl, but somehow all this was different.
- 11:58Speaker 1: They were wise, even if he wasn't, that Mother had
- 12:01Speaker 1: set her heart not on seeing her name in lights,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but on seeing just how.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Soon she could bring Frank Burt around to popping that
- 12:09Speaker 6: all-important question.
- 12:10Speaker 8: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Oh, good evening, Senor Bird. You sit, please. Please sit down. Yes,
- 12:21Speaker 3: will you please get me some... Butter, Senor. No, what
- 12:26Speaker 3: I'd like is some.
- 12:28Speaker 18: Oh, he's just joking, Mr.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Capucci.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Spaghetti for two, please.
- 12:31Speaker 3: And you all put some of that good old horse
- 12:33Speaker 3: meat sauce on the coil.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I think, Senor, I think.
- 12:36Speaker 7: Oh, Frank, you're crazy.
- 12:37Speaker 3: That's what my father says. You know, my father, he
- 12:40Speaker 3: is a Dutchman. Oh, does he hate the theater... What
- 12:44Speaker 3: kind of a business is this? A dancer, a chigger?
- 12:49Speaker 3: And then speaking of jigging, kid, I've been working on
- 12:52Speaker 3: a new routine. How about meeting me in the theater
- 12:54Speaker 3: in the morning?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Frank, I'm not sure I'm going to stay in the show.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Roy Bivens is going into a new musical comedy, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: he says he can get me a job.
- 13:03Speaker 9: Oh, he does, does he?
- 13:04Speaker 7: Of course, I don't want to quit.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But, well, I mean, just because you gave me my start,
- 13:08Speaker 1: there's no reason why you have to stay shackled to me,
- 13:11Speaker 1: as though we were shackled together, like people who are shackled.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Who said anything about being shackled? Say, you're not falling
- 13:21Speaker 3: for what a tenor tells you, are you?
- 13:23Speaker 1: I didn't say I was falling for it. I'm just
- 13:25Speaker 1: thinking about it.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, well, of course, I'd hate to lose you.
- 13:29Speaker 1: You wouldn't?
- 13:29Speaker 3: Sure. There's no joke breaking in a new partner.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Oh.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Well, maybe you would make a big name for yourself.
- 13:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Maybe Roy Bivens is right to rest.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Then you think I should go?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Well, you gotta think to yourself. But if anything goes wrong,
- 13:45Speaker 3: you can always come back.
- 13:46Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 13:48Speaker 3: There's one thing I want to get clear, though. This
- 13:50Speaker 3: business between you and Roy Bivens is all business, isn't it?
- 13:54Speaker 9: No monkey business.
- 13:56Speaker 10: No.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Funny business?
- 13:58Speaker 9: Just business business?
- 14:00Speaker 1: What's that to you? Oh, nothing.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I was just thinking about you.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Thinking about me? Why, you never thought of anybody in
- 14:05Speaker 1: your life except the great Frank Bird.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Now, what makes you say that?
- 14:08Speaker 1: What do you care about a partner anyway? Just somebody
- 14:10Speaker 1: to dance with. Wasn't really going with Roy, but now
- 14:13Speaker 1: I am. I'm sick of being taken for granted. Go on,
- 14:16Speaker 1: get yourself a new partner. You can teach her that now, too.
- 14:18Speaker 3: What's got into you?
- 14:19Speaker 1: Some sense at last, which is more than you'll ever have.
- 14:21Speaker 6: Wait a minute.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Put down that plate. Wait.
- 14:29Speaker 6: So Mother went away with a new show, her own act,
- 14:32Speaker 6: singing and dancing. Oh, Frank missed her all right, but
- 14:36Speaker 6: he went right on alone doing the same old numbers
- 14:38Speaker 6: in the same old way and to the delight of
- 14:41Speaker 6: the same old audience.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Who makes life necessary for them to do? And who
- 14:48Speaker 3: can take my dreams and make my dreams come true? Oh,
- 14:51Speaker 3: don't give me trick, this is the one we'll do.
- 15:02Speaker 6: Then one night, as Frank finished his act and did
- 15:04Speaker 6: a cartwheel into the wings, as always, someone was waiting
- 15:07Speaker 6: to see him.
- 15:12Speaker 16: Hello, Frank.
- 15:14Speaker 9: Myrtle!
- 15:16Speaker 3: Myrtle! I thought you were in Los Angeles.
- 15:19Speaker 7: What happened?
- 15:20Speaker 9: Show pulled up?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Oh, the show's doing fine.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Your tenant didn't stop breathing down your neck.
- 15:24Speaker 9: Did he?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Not quite. But he asked me to marry him.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Stevens? Asked you to marry him?
- 15:30Speaker 1: Well, what's wrong with that? Some people do get married,
- 15:33Speaker 1: you know.
- 15:33Speaker 9: Huh?
- 15:35Speaker 3: What'd you say?
- 15:36Speaker 1: I told him I'd have to think it over.
- 15:38Speaker 10: Oh.
- 15:38Speaker 9: Frank.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 15:41Speaker 1: You might as well know what really happened. Last week,
- 15:44Speaker 1: the producer was watching me rehearse my dance. It had
- 15:47Speaker 1: some of your steps in it.
- 15:48Speaker 9: It has, huh?
- 15:49Speaker 1: In fact, it's practically the same dance, except that I
- 15:51Speaker 1: do it alone. The producer didn't like it.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Well, come on, come on. Don't be ashamed. I want
- 15:57Speaker 3: to know the worst.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Well, Roy said, wait till she really does it. Of course,
- 16:01Speaker 1: this is just a rehearsal.
- 16:02Speaker 9: Is that all?
- 16:03Speaker 16: Is that all?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Well, I wanted to go right through the floor. I
- 16:06Speaker 1: was doing my very best, Frank. I was dancing the
- 16:08Speaker 1: way I always did with you. I don't know what
- 16:11Speaker 1: was wrong.
- 16:12Speaker 9: I do.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Look, Mark, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but
- 16:18Speaker 3: when you dance with me, well, when we dance together... Yes, Frank?
- 16:23Speaker 9: Well, when we.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Dance together, it's just different.
- 16:26Speaker 1: How different, Frank?
- 16:28Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know.
- 16:29Speaker 9: But we hit it off.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Maybe we ought to stick together. You know, shackle. Married.
- 16:35Speaker 8: Frank!
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah, well, if it's an idea, I'll work on it.
- 16:39Speaker 9: You'll work on it?
- 16:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Oh, I knew I shouldn't have come back humiliating myself.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I'll take it easy. I'll show you.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Let me out of here. You'll what?
- 16:47Speaker 4: Help!
- 16:48Speaker 9: Help!
- 16:48Speaker 3: Let go of me! If I don't own you, you're
- 16:50Speaker 3: going to behave like this.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Help!
- 16:51Speaker 3: I never would have proposed to you in the first place.
- 16:53Speaker 3: All right, now give me a kiss. All right, I'll
- 16:54Speaker 3: take one.
- 16:55Speaker 9: Frank Birch, you little.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Come on.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Frank Birch, you little.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Mr.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Frank Birch.
- 17:02Speaker 16: Oh, my.
- 17:21Speaker 19: Our stars will return with Act II of Mother War
- 17:23Speaker 19: Types in a moment.
- 17:25Speaker 3: What's the big news in Hollywood this week, Libby?
- 17:28Speaker 6: Everybody is talking about Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's latest, Dory Sherry's distinguished production
- 17:33Speaker 6: of Battlegrounds. As a woman, I'd say this is not
- 17:36Speaker 6: a war picture, but a peace picture. An unadorned story
- 17:39Speaker 6: of a handful of RGIs caught in the Battle of
- 17:42Speaker 6: Beth Dornan.
- 17:43Speaker 19: At the press preview, we were very much impressed with
- 17:45Speaker 19: the picture's sincere and honest approach.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Well, the guests at the.
- 17:49Speaker 6: New York premiere on Thursday were just as thrilled with it.
- 17:52Speaker 6: The stars are unforgettable in their roles. Van Johnson is
- 17:56Speaker 6: a likable guy with a weakness for gals and gags,
- 17:59Speaker 6: while John Hodiak is a small-town reporter inspired by his
- 18:03Speaker 6: own convictions. Ricardo Montalban is a kid from California, lonely
- 18:08Speaker 6: and scared. And George Murphy is Pop, waiting the day
- 18:12Speaker 6: when he can go home to his youngsters.
- 18:14Speaker 19: Many other fine MGM stars, too, help make this a
- 18:17Speaker 19: memorable picture. Battleground is a vivid reminder of what our
- 18:21Speaker 19: victory cost.
- 18:22Speaker 3: And we appreciate more than little things that give.
- 18:24Speaker 6: Us so much pleasure in peacetime, like plenty of nylon stockings.
- 18:28Speaker 3: And plenty of luxe flakes to take care of them.
- 18:31Speaker 6: You know, during the war, women would go from store
- 18:34Speaker 6: to store to find a box. They knew that rubbing
- 18:37Speaker 6: nylons with cake soap or using strong soaps made runs
- 18:40Speaker 6: come sooner. Strain tests proved that. And nylons weren't easy
- 18:45Speaker 6: to replace. Luxe flakes made them last twice as long.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Even now that nylons are plentiful, they still cost something.
- 18:52Speaker 7: That's right.
- 18:52Speaker 6: But when you wash them with Luxe flakes, they last
- 18:55Speaker 6: so much longer, it's just.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Like getting an extra pair of stockings.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Every time you buy a And what girl doesn't like
- 19:01Speaker 3: a bargain?
- 19:02Speaker 6: As a matter of fact, the makers of stockings know
- 19:05Speaker 6: that right care is important to their reputation. So it's
- 19:09Speaker 6: no wonder that over 90% of them recommend Locke's Flakes.
- 19:14Speaker 3: That's right, Libby. Now, here's our producer, Mr.
- 19:17Speaker 9: William Keeley.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Act Two of Mother Wore Tight, starring Betty Grable as
- 19:22Speaker 4: Myrtle and Dan Daly as Frank.
- 19:29Speaker 6: So they were married, Mother and Frank Burt. After the honeymoon,
- 19:33Speaker 6: they went on the road with their new vaudeville act,
- 19:35Speaker 6: Dear Old Two-A-Day. Town after town, month after month, show
- 19:39Speaker 6: after show, but always giving the audience.
- 19:42Speaker 7: Everything they had.
- 19:44Speaker 8: And of course, you know, the town of Cocoa.
- 19:47Speaker 10: We're all.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Be geographically indefinitely indelibly in in Deanna.
- 20:07Speaker 6: The new act was going over so well, Dad says
- 20:09Speaker 6: they might even have hit Broadway. If suddenly Mother hadn't
- 20:12Speaker 6: announced that she was going home to Grandma because of... Well,
- 20:16Speaker 6: I believe the term is an act of God.
- 20:19Speaker 9: Marth!
- 20:20Speaker 1: Myrtle, you're kidding. Oh, I am, am I? You think
- 20:22Speaker 1: this was the first time anybody ever had a baby?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Let's quit, Marth. We'll take a long vacation, huh? No
- 20:27Speaker 3: kid of mine is going to be born in front
- 20:28Speaker 3: of a backdrop.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Darling, I'm not going to take just a vacation. I'm
- 20:33Speaker 1: going to quit. For good.
- 20:35Speaker 9: Why, Myrtle McKinley.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I want my baby to have a home and a
- 20:38Speaker 1: mother to take care of him.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but Mark.
- 20:41Speaker 7: You can get a.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Dozen partners as good as I am. Look, Frank, it's
- 20:44Speaker 1: been wonderful together. But this is even going to be
- 20:46Speaker 1: more wonderful. You be the papa. We'll let you work
- 20:50Speaker 1: and make the money to send home. Oh, darling, this
- 20:52Speaker 1: is what I've wanted all my life and from now on.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Please just let me be the mama.
- 20:58Speaker 9: Sure, honey. Just so you'll be happy.
- 21:02Speaker 8: Gosh.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Frank Burt Jr.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yes, Frank Jr. it was to have been, but under
- 21:21Speaker 1: the circumstances, Mother thought that.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Iris would be a little more appropriate.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Three years later, it was going to be Frank Jr.
- 21:29Speaker 1: for sure.
- 21:32Speaker 6: But again, under the circumstances, Mother thought Miriam would be
- 21:35Speaker 6: more suitable. They compromised on calling me Mikey.
- 21:38Speaker 1: We lived in Chicago then, Grandma, Mother, Iris, and I.
- 21:42Speaker 1: And in between seasons, Dad.
- 21:45Speaker 7: One day, I guess I was about four. It's a telegram, Myrtle. Oh,
- 21:50Speaker 7: why on earth did he ever invent these things? Scaring
- 21:53Speaker 7: a body half out of their wits. Well, open it.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Open it.
- 21:56Speaker 1: You, Grandma.
- 21:57Speaker 7: You open it.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Where.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Well, heavenly praise, madam.
- 22:02Speaker 7: At least the man's not dead.
- 22:03Speaker 1: It's from France.
- 22:04Speaker 10: Yes.
- 22:05Speaker 7: Can't get a woman to replace Dolly. Make me an
- 22:09Speaker 7: Albany tomorrow. We'll be at the.
- 22:11Speaker 1: But the children, I just can't pack up and leave.
- 22:13Speaker 7: The children won't starve. Besides, the idea of a married
- 22:16Speaker 7: man traveling all over the country with a woman named Dolly.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Grandma, she's just part of his act.
- 22:20Speaker 7: And you're his wife. And the wife's place is with
- 22:22Speaker 7: her husband.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But I've given up this stage, and I haven't sung
- 22:25Speaker 1: a note in six years. As for dancing.
- 22:27Speaker 7: If your dress is short enough, they'll never worry about
- 22:30Speaker 7: your singing and dancing. Now get a move on.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Who knows how much I love.
- 22:48Speaker 8: You You do.
- 22:53Speaker 1: No one means more to me.
- 22:56Speaker 13: Than You do.
- 23:03Speaker 6: You take December.
- 23:06Speaker 13: And smile it into May.
- 23:15Speaker 17: Come back again when you're old.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Who can take.
- 23:46Speaker 18: My dreams and make my dreams come true?
- 23:57Speaker 8: Don't leave me together. What if what?
- 24:07Speaker 13: What will do?
- 24:11Speaker 16: What if?
- 24:25Speaker 6: Of course, the inevitable happened. Once Mother was back in
- 24:29Speaker 6: the act again, she couldn't quit. It was in her blood. Meanwhile,
- 24:34Speaker 6: we were growing up, Iris and I. I remember the
- 24:37Speaker 6: December when I was ten years old. Mother and Dad
- 24:40Speaker 6: were booked in Boston. This was going to be our
- 24:42Speaker 6: very first Christmas apart.
- 24:44Speaker 7: Oh, what's wrong with you, my dear? Is it a
- 24:47Speaker 7: cold you've got?
- 24:48Speaker 1: No, Grandma.
- 24:51Speaker 9: I just.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Oh, Grandma.
- 24:55Speaker 7: There, there now, child.
- 24:56Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 24:58Speaker 7: But think of all the fun we'll be having at Christmas.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Fun, Grandma? Without Mother and Daddy? Why did they have
- 25:05Speaker 1: to take a booking for Christmas week?
- 25:07Speaker 7: Why, she asks. Do theaters close on Christmas? Oh, come now, girls.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Just remember there's still a Santa Claus.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Santa Claus.
- 25:16Speaker 7: We'll send him a letter.
- 25:18Speaker 6: Who knows what the good man will do when the
- 25:20Speaker 6: facts are set before him.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Grandma, what do you mean?
- 25:22Speaker 7: Oh, never mind what I mean. Boston, is it there?
- 25:25Speaker 18: Tell her how you care.
- 25:29Speaker 8: Of course it's.
- 25:35Speaker 1: From the children, Frank. But the box says do not
- 25:37Speaker 1: open until Christmas.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Well, it'll be Christmas in an hour. Do you think
- 25:40Speaker 3: I'm going to wait?
- 25:42Speaker 9: Ah, look, Mark. From Mikey.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Merry Christmas to my father. A fine school these kids
- 25:50Speaker 3: are going to.
- 25:50Speaker 9: M-E-R-Y.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Merry Christmas. Hey, look. It's a painting. Just what I needed. Frank.
- 25:59Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 26:00Speaker 4: Listen.
- 26:02Speaker 1: To my wonderful mother, there is no other like my mother.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Her wine-tinted lips, her raven hair.
- 26:09Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 26:10Speaker 9: Since when?
- 26:12Speaker 1: Her beautiful eyes. How I wish I was there. Oh, Frank.
- 26:18Speaker 9: Now, honey, remember what you promised.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I'm not crying.
- 26:20Speaker 9: Who is it?
- 26:21Speaker 8: I'll go, Marcy.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Iris!
- 26:25Speaker 3: Mikey!
- 26:27Speaker 8: Oh, Mother!
- 26:28Speaker 19: How did you ever get here?
- 26:30Speaker 1: It was all Grandma's idea. She made us write that
- 26:33Speaker 1: across what we wanted most. I just can't believe you're here.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Oh, Mother.
- 26:38Speaker 1: What happened to your clothes? You look like you slept
- 26:39Speaker 1: in them. We did. We were afraid to take them off.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We were afraid he might not know when we got
- 26:44Speaker 1: to Boston. Oh, Mother, your presents. You've opened them before Christmas. Oh,
- 26:50Speaker 1: I know, dear, but.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Well, we couldn't... Oh, it's all my fault. I said
- 26:54Speaker 3: it's Oh, no.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Daddy.
- 26:57Speaker 3: All the presents for you and Mikey. We sent them
- 26:59Speaker 3: to Chicago.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Not even a Christmas tree for our children. We don't mind, Mother, honestly. Oh,
- 27:05Speaker 1: we want us to be with you. Hey, where are
- 27:08Speaker 1: you going? It's almost midnight. Everything will be closed.
- 27:11Speaker 9: I'm surprised at you. I'm Santa Claus.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I use chimneys.
- 27:15Speaker 16: Poor Dad.
- 27:21Speaker 6: He looked everywhere, but no presents. But he did come
- 27:24Speaker 6: back with a Christmas tree. Yes, I bet we had.
- 27:27Speaker 7: The most expensive Christmas tree in Boston.
- 27:30Speaker 6: It cost $ 100, $ 50 to the people, and a $ 50 fine.
- 27:35Speaker 6: Father had chopped it down on somebody's front lawn. Mother
- 27:43Speaker 6: always had one weakness. She could never resist a travel folder.
- 27:47Speaker 6: Every summer, she'd decide we needed.
- 27:48Speaker 7: A complete change of environment.
- 27:50Speaker 6: And one year, she selected the most fashionable, and according
- 27:53Speaker 6: to the travel folder, the gayest of all summer resorts,
- 27:57Speaker 6: Berkshire Highlands. I remember how excited we were as we
- 28:00Speaker 6: walked into the hotel lobby.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Daddy doing that cute little jig here.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Morning.
- 28:04Speaker 9: Good morning. Morning. Good morning, sir. Yes, I'm Frank Byrne.
- 28:08Speaker 9: I made reservations before.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Count up.
- 28:09Speaker 9: You see? One, two, three, four. Oh, yes, Mr. Byrne.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Will you shine the register, please?
- 28:16Speaker 9: What's the matter? Death in the family?
- 28:20Speaker 3: I beg your pardon, sir.
- 28:22Speaker 9: When do we view the remains?
- 28:24Speaker 3: Don't the guests ever do anything here or say anything?
- 28:28Speaker 10: Well, our guests seem to like the lobby, sir. They
- 28:31Speaker 10: sit in the rocking chairs and rock. Sometimes they say
- 28:34Speaker 10: good morning. Well, now that's right broad-minded of them, isn't it? Boys,
- 28:39Speaker 10: show the birds to their rooms, please.
- 28:41Speaker 9: Where is it? Deadpan Alley.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Now, Frank, these places are always much livelier at night.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Come along, children.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Here's the elevator, sir.
- 28:49Speaker 9: Thank you, son.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I must have tripped getting out
- 28:55Speaker 3: of the elevator. Yeah, well, don't break your neck, kid.
- 28:57Speaker 3: You'll never get any laughs in this joint.
- 28:58Speaker 8: In a.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Sense, Mother was right.
- 29:14Speaker 6: It was gayer at night. At night, they turned on
- 29:17Speaker 6: the lights.
- 29:19Speaker 7: Anyway, we were sitting there in the lobby along with
- 29:21Speaker 7: the other guests.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Come on, let's go over to the piano. Maybe we
- 29:23Speaker 3: can liven this joint up a little.
- 29:25Speaker 1: That's a very good idea. Mother, everybody's looking at us.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Since when did actors not want to be looked at?
- 29:30Speaker 3: You're right, kid, and especially at these prices.
- 29:32Speaker 1: How about tra-la-la?
- 29:34Speaker 9: Good, hit it, Mark.
- 29:37Speaker 16: Tra-la-la-la, what a merry world we live in.
- 29:44Speaker 9: So wear a smile, sing a little while it's raining.
- 29:48Speaker 1: And through the clouds.
- 29:50Speaker 16: Every little star will shine.
- 29:52Speaker 8: La, la, la, la, la, what's a little.
- 29:54Speaker 9: Bit of trouble?
- 29:55Speaker 8: You live and learn.
- 29:57Speaker 19: Things are going to turn out fine.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Just feel that way, and every little day will feel
- 30:03Speaker 3: like spring.
- 30:05Speaker 9: If you'll just sing.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Tra-la, tra-la-la-la-la. Come on, folks, let's have a little fun.
- 30:09Speaker 9: All you have to know is tra-la-la-la-la.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Okay, Myrtle, now everybody. Tra-la-la-la-la-la. Sing it out. All of
- 30:20Speaker 3: it's yours and mine. Let's hear the men's voices, too.
- 30:23Speaker 16: Shut up and sing.
- 30:24Speaker 3: A little while it's raining. And through the clouds every
- 30:29Speaker 3: little star will shine. Come on, live her up.
- 30:31Speaker 19: What's a little.
- 30:33Speaker 18: Bit of trouble?
- 30:35Speaker 3: You'll live and learn things are going to turn out fine.
- 30:39Speaker 9: Just feel that way and every.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Little day will seem like spring.
- 30:44Speaker 9: If you'll just sing along.
- 30:47Speaker 3: You know something, Myrtle? If anyone speaks to me, I'm
- 30:53Speaker 3: going to keel over in a dead faint. What's the
- 30:56Speaker 3: matter with these people?
- 30:58Speaker 16: Come on, Mikey.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Let's go down and look at the fish pond. Oh,
- 31:10Speaker 1: who cares about goldfish? I'm going to bounce my ball.
- 31:13Speaker 9: Uh....
- 31:15Speaker 6: Well, no wonder.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Look who's there. Oh, as if you don't know.
- 31:20Speaker 6: It's that boy who fell out of the elevator.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Oh, that is Bob, isn't it? Margie, darling, must you
- 31:28Speaker 1: play with that absurd ball all the time? Iris, you
- 31:32Speaker 1: deliberately knocked that ball out of my hand. Be quiet. Oh,
- 31:35Speaker 1: is this your ball? Oh, thank you. It belongs to
- 31:38Speaker 1: my little sister here. Thanks. You see, we have a
- 31:41Speaker 1: silly old bet that she can't bounce it a hundred
- 31:43Speaker 1: times without missing. Haven't we, darling?
- 31:46Speaker 11: No.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Now, Mikey dear, you run along and play. You want
- 31:52Speaker 1: to know something?
- 31:53Speaker 3: Me? Well, sure.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Iris loves to bounce it, too. I'm so sorry. You
- 32:00Speaker 1: know how children are at that age.
- 32:02Speaker 7: You, uh, enjoying it here, Miss, uh.
- 32:04Speaker 10: Bert.
- 32:05Speaker 13: Iris Bert.
- 32:06Speaker 6: Oh, yes.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Father and Mother were just remarking what a heavenly spot
- 32:10Speaker 1: this is. They even... Miss Bird, what's happened down there?
- 32:13Speaker 1: It's Margie. It's my sister. She's hurt herself. Are you
- 32:25Speaker 1: sure you're all right, Mikey? How do you feel, darling? Oh,
- 32:28Speaker 1: I'm fine now, Mother. What happened?
- 32:31Speaker 3: Apparently, you were climbing a tree and you fell right
- 32:35Speaker 3: on your head.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Did I get a laugh when I fell? You couldn't
- 32:39Speaker 1: make this bunch of long hairs laugh if you broke
- 32:41Speaker 1: your neck. Frank, I've had all I can stand. Let's
- 32:43Speaker 1: start packing.
- 32:44Speaker 8: Mother!
- 32:44Speaker 1: I'm not going to have our whole vacation ruined by
- 32:46Speaker 1: staying here with these stick in the mud. I know
- 32:49Speaker 1: why Iris doesn't want to go. Her fella. You wash up, Mikey.
- 32:53Speaker 9: What fella?
- 32:54Speaker 1: Bob Clarkman, of course. Well, certainly you've noticed her disgusting behavior. Mother,
- 33:01Speaker 1: Bob's not at all like the others. Really, he isn't. Well,
- 33:03Speaker 1: I'm not staying here to find out. His mother and
- 33:06Speaker 1: father are in Europe, and he had to come here
- 33:07Speaker 1: with an old tutor and.
- 33:08Speaker 9: Come in.
- 33:12Speaker 7: Mr.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Burns? Come on. Frank Burns, behave yourself.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Well, I told you I'd faint if anybody here ever
- 33:22Speaker 3: spoke to me.
- 33:23Speaker 10: Mr.
- 33:23Speaker 9: And Mrs.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Schneider and I, well, we just thought we'd inquire how
- 33:27Speaker 4: your little girl is. That was quite a fall.
- 33:30Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, we were so frightened.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Oh, Mikey's fine, thank you.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Good, good. Looks like you're leaving, Mrs. Burt.
- 33:37Speaker 9: Packing your bag?
- 33:38Speaker 1: I'll say we are.
- 33:39Speaker 10: Oh.
- 33:40Speaker 4: We were in hopes you'd stay and help give this.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Place a little life.
- 33:44Speaker 7: Yeah, we see you the.
- 33:45Speaker 15: Other night in the lobby, the piano and the singing.
- 33:48Speaker 4: You see, the folks here, well, we've all been coming
- 33:51Speaker 4: here so long and doing nothing. I guess we've just
- 33:53Speaker 4: sort of dried up.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Oh, Mother, please stay.
- 33:56Speaker 7: Yeah, Mrs. Burt, we're all dried out. We have such
- 34:01Speaker 7: good times together.
- 34:02Speaker 1: You help us, huh? Singing, yeah?
- 34:05Speaker 7: And dancing?
- 34:06Speaker 3: What do you say, Murph? We've played to tougher audiences
- 34:09Speaker 3: than this and never walked down on them.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Well, kids?
- 34:12Speaker 5: Yes?
- 34:14Speaker 1: I guess we stay.
- 34:30Speaker 19: We pause now for station identification. This is CBS, the
- 34:34Speaker 19: Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 34:56Speaker 4: After a brief intermission, our stars will continue with Act
- 34:59Speaker 4: Three of Mother War Tights. Tonight, we welcome diminutive Deborah Padgett,
- 35:04Speaker 4: who does her algebra in the morning and plays love
- 35:07Speaker 4: scenes in the afternoon.
- 35:08Speaker 3: What is your ambition, Deborah?
- 35:10Speaker 1: To make a picture in Italy, Mr.
- 35:12Speaker 12: Keeley.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Ever since I saw the preview of Prince of Foxes,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I've envied Wanda Hendricks.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Daryl Zanuck has produced a magnificent picture. With authentic 15th
- 35:20Speaker 4: century Roman settings, you know, no soundstage could equal.
- 35:23Speaker 1: No. And I'm so glad the studio held the story
- 35:25Speaker 1: for Tyrone Power. He's so romantic.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Yes, Ty wears those Renaissance costumes as if he actually
- 35:31Speaker 4: lived in the period. Another fine piece of casting is
- 35:34Speaker 4: Orson Welles as the despotic Cesar Borgia.
- 35:37Speaker 1: The costumes are fabulous. Wanda almost fainted from their weight.
- 35:41Speaker 4: The 20th century fox didn't spare the dollars on Prince
- 35:43Speaker 4: of Foxes. You know, many fabrics were especially woven in Italy.
- 35:47Speaker 4: And much technical equipment, of course, had to be imported.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Wanda did some importing, too. Luxe flakes are still scarce
- 35:52Speaker 1: in Europe, so she took her own supply for her
- 35:54Speaker 1: personal things. Like so many of the stars, she's.
- 35:57Speaker 7: A luxe fan, Mr.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Kennedy.
- 35:58Speaker 19: Well, that's natural, Deborah, because it's been shown by actual
- 36:01Speaker 19: washing tests. that luxe flakes keep slips and nighties, color
- 36:05Speaker 19: fresh and new looking, three times as long.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Wanda had some beautiful lingerie made for her in Italy
- 36:10Speaker 1: and the soft shades that she loved.
- 36:11Speaker 19: A lucky thing she had luxe flakes because wrong washing
- 36:14Speaker 19: methods fade delicate colors, damage lace. It's foolish to take
- 36:18Speaker 19: chances with anything less mild than luxe flakes. These tiny
- 36:22Speaker 19: sheer diamonds of luxe burst into suds in a flash,
- 36:26Speaker 19: whisk away soil in a jiffy. And luxe flakes are
- 36:29Speaker 19: so mild and gentle, colors stay lovely far longer. Makers
- 36:34Speaker 19: of fine washables recognize that fact. Recommend this fine product
- 36:38Speaker 19: of Lieber Brothers Company, 33 to 1.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Thank you for coming tonight, Deborah Padgett. Here's our producer, Mr.
- 36:45Speaker 9: William Keeley.
- 36:46Speaker 4: The curtain rises on the third act of Mother Wore Tights,
- 36:49Speaker 4: starring Betty Gravel as Myrtle and Dan Daly as Frank.
- 37:01Speaker 1: We stayed a whole month.
- 37:02Speaker 16: At Berkshire Highlands, and with father.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And mother taking over, everybody.
- 37:07Speaker 6: Had a wonderful time.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Mother's faith in her travel folders was triumphantly restored, and
- 37:12Speaker 1: even father admitted it was the gayest of all summer resorts.
- 37:16Speaker 6: Iris spent most of her time with the rich Clarkman boys.
- 37:19Speaker 1: The night before.
- 37:21Speaker 5: We left, I overheard mother and father in.
- 37:23Speaker 2: The next room.
- 37:27Speaker 6: Frank.
- 37:28Speaker 9: Oh. Frank, are you still awake, dear?
- 37:33Speaker 1: Frank, I've been thinking about Iris, about her future.
- 37:36Speaker 9: What future?
- 37:39Speaker 1: Oh, about the kind of people she goes with, things
- 37:41Speaker 1: like that.
- 37:44Speaker 9: What's wrong with the people she's been going with?
- 37:46Speaker 1: Oh, nothing except, well, I was wondering if maybe we
- 37:49Speaker 1: haven't been a little selfish.
- 37:51Speaker 10: Us?
- 37:52Speaker 9: Selfish?
- 37:53Speaker 1: Making the children lead our kind of life.
- 37:56Speaker 3: What do they want now? The trouble with those kids is.
- 37:59Speaker 9: They've had too much.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Are you trying to say our girls are spoiled?
- 38:03Speaker 9: You mean you didn't know?
- 38:04Speaker 1: Frank, bird of all the sweet, normal, unspoiled children.
- 38:08Speaker 9: Okay, skip it.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Now, for one thing, they're schooled.
- 38:11Speaker 9: They go to school.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I was thinking that maybe a boarding school. And after that, college.
- 38:17Speaker 9: That Mikey makes college. I'll eat my sombrero.
- 38:20Speaker 1: The stage is all right for us. We love it.
- 38:22Speaker 1: But they're entitled to meet nice young girls and boys
- 38:25Speaker 1: their own age. We're interested in other things like, well,
- 38:28Speaker 1: books and things like that.
- 38:31Speaker 3: All right, we'll give him a book. Two books, one
- 38:36Speaker 3: for each.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Oh, Frank, you're just being stubborn. Iris is growing up.
- 38:41Speaker 1: She's beginning to think about boys.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Are you talking about that wobbly-legged goof that looks like
- 38:47Speaker 3: he's going to break into a run every time you
- 38:48Speaker 3: look at him?
- 38:50Speaker 1: He's not a goof. Bob's a wonderful boy.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Well, I'll bet if I said boo to that kid.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Don't you dare.
- 38:58Speaker 9: Would you mind telling me what we're fighting about?
- 39:02Speaker 1: Oh, go to sleep, darling. We'll talk about it when
- 39:04Speaker 1: we get home. Okay.
- 39:05Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Well, they did talk it over.
- 39:14Speaker 6: And as usual, Mother allowed Dad to convince her that she'd.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Been right all along.
- 39:19Speaker 6: The following September, our hearts and our souls, they enrolled
- 39:23Speaker 6: Iris and me in Miss Ridgeway's exclusive boarding school for
- 39:26Speaker 6: young ladies.
- 39:28Speaker 1: And just remember, darling, we'll be back to visit the
- 39:30Speaker 1: first chance we get. You're darn tootin'. Now, don't forget
- 39:33Speaker 1: about hanging up your clothes. And be good, girl. We will, Mother.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and bear down on your algebra. After all, look
- 39:39Speaker 3: how well I speak it.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Goodbye, Daddy.
- 39:46Speaker 8: Goodbye, Mommy.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Bye, Daddy.
- 39:54Speaker 6: When Easter vacation came, Iris and I took the train.
- 39:58Speaker 6: I was to join Mother and Father in Pittsburgh, and
- 40:00Speaker 6: Iris would come on later. She and some other girls
- 40:02Speaker 6: from school and Barb Clarkman and some boys from college
- 40:06Speaker 6: were all.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Going to Westchester.
- 40:07Speaker 6: The Clarkmans were giving a weekend house party, and.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Naturally, Barb invited Iris.
- 40:13Speaker 6: After a couple of hours on the train, Bob produced
- 40:15Speaker 6: a guitar.
- 40:21Speaker 3: All right, Iris, you're the singer in our midst. How
- 40:23Speaker 3: about a song?
- 40:24Speaker 1: Well, how about Swinging Down the Lane? Oh, wonderful.
- 40:28Speaker 7: Go ahead, Iris.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Everybody hand in hand Swinging down the lane Just about then,
- 40:36Speaker 1: a man and woman came to the car. They were
- 40:39Speaker 1: theatrical people, all right.
- 40:41Speaker 6: And maybe they'd had.
- 40:42Speaker 9: A little too much to drink.
- 40:44Speaker 6: Anyway, when they heard the sound, they joined right in.
- 40:51Speaker 17: When the moon is on the rise, and the arms
- 40:55Speaker 17: so blue, what's the point in making lies like.
- 41:00Speaker 8: We used to do?
- 41:02Speaker 16: When the moon is on the.
- 41:04Speaker 17: Way, till we fall in vain, should we swing it
- 41:08Speaker 17: down the.
- 41:09Speaker 13: Lane with you?
- 41:13Speaker 1: You know something, kid? Swinging down the lane happens to
- 41:17Speaker 1: be one of our numbers.
- 41:19Speaker 19: Yeah, we've been eating off it for two years.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Hope my voice didn't blow you. I'm one of those
- 41:23Speaker 1: I don't care singers. Oh, who cares about the voice?
- 41:28Speaker 3: Don't you believe it, kid? My little hair had one
- 41:31Speaker 3: of the sweetest, hard-calling voices in Missouri before I roped
- 41:34Speaker 3: her and put shoes on her.
- 41:37Speaker 16: Holy cow!
- 41:40Speaker 7: Oh, say, kid, you can sing.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Oh, I can't, really. The heck you can!
- 41:45Speaker 3: Well, kids, we'd love to stay, but we gotta get
- 41:47Speaker 3: off the next time.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you know how these trains are.
- 41:50Speaker 7: They don't stop in these hick towns long enough.
- 41:52Speaker 1: To let you get your breath. Especially in these courses. Well,
- 41:57Speaker 1: so long, everybody.
- 41:58Speaker 15: Yeah, so long, and don't do.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Anything we wouldn't do.
- 42:01Speaker 16: Oh, it's a party!
- 42:06Speaker 3: Boy, where they have.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Imagine barging in on us like that. Did you ever
- 42:10Speaker 1: hear such a laugh in your life?
- 42:12Speaker 6: And that makeup.
- 42:13Speaker 7: Why do all actors have to be such show-offs?
- 42:15Speaker 6: I don't know, but they all are.
- 42:27Speaker 1: I saw the look that came over Iris' face.
- 42:30Speaker 6: A look that said not that mother and dad were
- 42:32Speaker 6: like that couple, but they were active. And not the
- 42:35Speaker 6: kind of people you talked about when you were with.
- 42:37Speaker 16: Girls from Miss Ridgeway's school and boys from Harvard.
- 42:41Speaker 6: Some months later, Iris and I had an unexpected telegram.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Well, go on, Iris. Finish reading it. It says, we've
- 42:48Speaker 1: been keeping it a great secret, but now you can know.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Dad and I have arranged a booking in the very
- 42:53Speaker 1: town where your school is. Mikey, they're going to play here. Oh, boy,
- 42:57Speaker 1: that's wonderful. But they can't, Mikey. They mustn't. Iris, you're
- 43:02Speaker 1: ashamed for them to come. I'm not. That's not it
- 43:05Speaker 1: at all.
- 43:05Speaker 9: It's just that.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Oh, why do they have to spoil everything? You are ashamed.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Ashamed of Mother and Daddy.
- 43:13Speaker 4: Oh, Iris.
- 43:24Speaker 18: Come in.
- 43:26Speaker 9: Mother.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Hello, darling. Mother, what are you doing here? Your telegram
- 43:31Speaker 1: said next week, I know. But Mikey wired us that
- 43:34Speaker 1: you weren't feeling well. Did Daddy come, too?
- 43:36Speaker 9: Mm-hmm.
- 43:37Speaker 1: He'll be in to visit later. It's nothing, Mother. I
- 43:40Speaker 1: just don't feel well. Iris, I know what it is.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Mikey did this.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Mikey told you.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Mikey loves you, dear. She only did what she thought best. Oh,
- 43:49Speaker 1: I wish I'd never come here. But you've loved it here.
- 43:52Speaker 5: I hate it.
- 43:54Speaker 1: You think your friends will stop liking you because your
- 43:56Speaker 1: mother and father are on the stage? Oh, Mother, it's
- 43:58Speaker 1: not that. It's not you and Daddy. We are the
- 44:01Speaker 1: sweetest people in the whole world. But people on the
- 44:04Speaker 1: stage are not as refined as your friends.
- 44:07Speaker 9: Is that it?
- 44:08Speaker 1: I wish you could see some of their homes and
- 44:09Speaker 1: how their mothers and fathers... Like Bob's mother and father?
- 44:13Speaker 1: They're so nice, Mother, and dignified. They want me to
- 44:16Speaker 1: visit them again and... Oh, Mother, you don't hate me,
- 44:19Speaker 1: do you? Of course not, darling. You know I love
- 44:23Speaker 1: you and Daddy. Oh, yes, I know you do. Don't worry, dear.
- 44:27Speaker 1: We'll figure it out some way. Now, get dressed. You
- 44:30Speaker 1: don't want Daddy to see you looking like a ghost, do.
- 44:34Speaker 2: You?
- 44:34Speaker 3: Sure, it's all right if we take the kids out
- 44:35Speaker 3: for dinner, Miss Ridgway.
- 44:36Speaker 9: Of course.
- 44:37Speaker 1: I left word for Iris to meet you here in
- 44:39Speaker 1: my office.
- 44:40Speaker 7: Uh, about this other matter, though.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Iris is just mixed up, Miss Ridgway. I'm sure lots
- 44:45Speaker 1: of other girls go through a phase like this.
- 44:47Speaker 9: I'll say she's mixed up.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Frank, please.
- 44:50Speaker 15: I'm grateful to you, Mrs. Burt, for telling me all this.
- 44:53Speaker 15: I know what it must have meant to you. How
- 44:55Speaker 15: simple it would have been for you and your husband
- 44:56Speaker 15: just to have canceled your engagement here in town.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Then you'll help us?
- 45:00Speaker 15: I think we can stretch our rules to cover it.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Okay, but if you want my advice.
- 45:05Speaker 9: Excuse me.
- 45:06Speaker 4: Yes?
- 45:07Speaker 1: May I come in, Miss Ridgway?
- 45:09Speaker 7: Iris, come in.
- 45:11Speaker 9: Hello, Daddy. Hello, Iris.
- 45:13Speaker 1: You're feeling better now? Yes, I think so.
- 45:17Speaker 7: I'm glad to hear that, dear.
- 45:19Speaker 15: I know how terribly disappointed you'd be not to be
- 45:22Speaker 15: able to go to the theater on Friday to see.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Your mother's and father's performance.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Isn't it nice of Miss Ridgeway, dear? She's going to
- 45:28Speaker 1: let you bring your whole class to see us. Oh, Mother,
- 45:31Speaker 1: how could you?
- 45:33Speaker 10: Iris!
- 45:41Speaker 6: They were all there that Friday.
- 45:43Speaker 7: Miss Ridgeway, Iris, and the girls in the class.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Mother and Dad did their usual act.
- 45:49Speaker 7: No changes.
- 45:50Speaker 6: They were Bert and McKinley, and this was it. Father
- 45:53Speaker 6: did Burlington Verde and fell in the drum. And Mother
- 45:56Speaker 6: did her dance routine. And then they went into their finale.
- 46:02Speaker 16: I wish I were back again with.
- 46:05Speaker 6: All the sweet, sweet, simple folks like all.
- 46:08Speaker 19: My kids in Kokomo, Indiana.
- 46:12Speaker 9: Well, if it isn't Papa and I, a mom, you always.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Had the cutest grin in Kokomo, Indiana.
- 46:21Speaker 16: Just look at Rover Wagner, oh gosh.
- 46:25Speaker 3: He remembers me.
- 46:27Speaker 8: And get a load of Sister Grace.
- 46:28Speaker 13: © BF-WATCH TV 2021 © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 47:02Speaker 3: And of course, you know, the town.
- 47:05Speaker 9: Of Kokomo will always.
- 47:08Speaker 3: Be geographically, indefinitely, indubitably in Indiana.
- 47:17Speaker 8: What do you.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Think, Mark?
- 47:27Speaker 16: I don't know.
- 47:27Speaker 1: The rest of the audience will like it.
- 47:29Speaker 9: Yeah, well, come on. Let's take a bow.
- 47:37Speaker 16: Grand, Mr.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Gray?
- 47:38Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
- 47:40Speaker 20: You must be very.
- 47:41Speaker 7: Proud of them, too, Iris.
- 47:43Speaker 16: I am.
- 47:47Speaker 6: The whole class thought Mother and Father were just as
- 47:51Speaker 6: wonderful as I knew they were.
- 47:52Speaker 1: And they told Iris so.
- 47:54Speaker 6: But I was never sure of just what Iris' feelings
- 47:57Speaker 6: were until June came and Iris was up on the
- 47:59Speaker 6: stage along with the other graduates.
- 48:01Speaker 7: Bob Clarkman was in the audience.
- 48:03Speaker 16: And, of course, Mother and Dad.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Bursting with pride when Miss Ridgway.
- 48:08Speaker 21: And now, it gives me great pleasure to present the
- 48:11Speaker 21: highest honor student in our school of music, Miss Iris Bird.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Look at that, Mother. She can applaud so loudly, can't she?
- 48:24Speaker 1: I have a feeling we're going to see a lot
- 48:26Speaker 1: of that young man from now on.
- 48:27Speaker 9: She hasn't played.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Anything yet, has she?
- 48:29Speaker 7: Doesn't have to be.
- 48:32Speaker 21: Ladies and gentlemen, I suppose I really ought to do
- 48:35Speaker 21: a song, but with your permission.
- 48:38Speaker 1: I'd like to sing a song especially for my mother
- 48:41Speaker 1: and father.
- 48:41Speaker 9: What?
- 48:42Speaker 1: A song they introduced in Fortville many years.
- 48:49Speaker 9: Ago. Hey, what's the.
- 48:51Speaker 16: Matter with you?
- 48:52Speaker 1: I can't help it.
- 48:53Speaker 11: I'm so happy.
- 48:54Speaker 13: Oh, no.
- 48:59Speaker 16: How much I love you You do No one is more.
- 49:02Speaker 13: To me Than you do You say And then December
- 49:18Speaker 13: comes back again When you're all alone.
- 49:41Speaker 16: Ooh, I have a strong.
- 49:46Speaker 13: Memory, you do.
- 49:50Speaker 8: Ooh, makes life.
- 49:53Speaker 13: Worth the time, you do. And make my dreams come true.
- 50:09Speaker 13: Don't give me free guesses what will happen.
- 50:39Speaker 3: How do you like that, Mert? Another star in the family.
- 50:43Speaker 16: And before the.
- 50:45Speaker 8: Million things she gave me.
- 50:51Speaker 13: And Iris was a singer.
- 50:52Speaker 7: She still is.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Though, of course, in private life, she's Mrs.
- 50:56Speaker 7: Robert Costner.
- 50:58Speaker 9: But then I'm sure you suspected.
- 50:59Speaker 3: That all along.
- 51:01Speaker 6: As for me, well, I didn't take her to stage.
- 51:04Speaker 16: I've been too busy at home.
- 51:06Speaker 6: That, and taking the children out to see their grandparents
- 51:09Speaker 6: every Sunday.
- 51:10Speaker 16: They're on the front porch in our house.
- 51:14Speaker 9: Mother knitting.
- 51:15Speaker 6: Daddy sound asleep with the funny taping in his lap.
- 51:23Speaker 16: Frank.
- 51:24Speaker 9: Frank.
- 51:25Speaker 7: Hmm?
- 51:28Speaker 9: Me?
- 51:28Speaker 1: Better clean up here.
- 51:31Speaker 9: The family will be out soon. Excuse me a moment.
- 51:38Speaker 9: Where are my glasses?
- 51:40Speaker 16: On your forehead, as usual.
- 51:41Speaker 9: Oh, yeah. Hey, where's my pipe? Where you put it.
- 51:47Speaker 6: Anything else?
- 51:49Speaker 10: Yep.
- 51:50Speaker 1: What?
- 51:51Speaker 8: A kiss.
- 51:54Speaker 6: Well, what do you know?
- 52:27Speaker 3: Our stars will return in just a moment for their
- 52:29Speaker 3: curtain call.
- 52:30Speaker 8: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 52:56Speaker 19: Yes, Lux Flakes suds go to work fast. Tiny diamonds
- 53:00Speaker 19: of Lux burst into suds in your dishpan the minute
- 53:02Speaker 19: water touches them.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Make suds so rich, so thick, they last and last.
- 53:07Speaker 3: Get your dishes done in a flash.
- 53:09Speaker 19: These richer suds wash more dishes, too, because they go further.
- 53:13Speaker 19: Tests show that ounce for ounce, Lux Flakes wash up
- 53:17Speaker 19: to twice as many dishes as any of ten other
- 53:20Speaker 19: leading soaps.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Lux Flakes are really thrifty for dishes. Here's Mr. Keeley
- 53:26Speaker 3: with our star.
- 53:28Speaker 4: They are no longer the Myrtle and Frank of Mother Wartite,
- 53:32Speaker 4: but the Betty Grable and Dan Daly.
- 53:34Speaker 1: That America loves.
- 53:35Speaker 20: And here they are for a curtain call.
- 53:48Speaker 4: I know your fans will be happy to learn that
- 53:51Speaker 4: you two are starting another picture together soon.
- 53:54Speaker 9: That's right.
- 54:04Speaker 3: Pretty lucky guy to be working with a beautiful and
- 54:06Speaker 3: glamorous gal like Betty again. Even though all she ever
- 54:10Speaker 3: talks about is that new Argentine racehorse that she and
- 54:13Speaker 3: Harry bought.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Oh, after all, Dan, Cab's a very unusual horse.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Most unusual.
- 54:19Speaker 4: Didn't he win a steak race under your colors?
- 54:21Speaker 7: Yes, he did.
- 54:21Speaker 1: He won breathing, Bill. And he's really gorgeous. You know,
- 54:25Speaker 1: I think Cab has the most beautiful legs in the
- 54:27Speaker 1: whole world.
