Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Happy Monday. There were so many stories for
- 0:25you guys today. I really had to pick and choose,
- 0:28but I think I have 5. I have a lot of stories, some of
- 0:31them are quite short, but it was just a news and trend filled
- 0:36weekend so let's just get right into it.
- 0:39The first story that I have is that Chris Olsen is shifting his
- 0:42narrative by using his spam account to create inside jokes
- 0:47with his followers. So following a very difficult
- 0:50few months, TikTok star Chris Olson has been using his spam
- 0:54account to regain control of his narrative.
- 0:56At the beginning of August, Chris had a mini almost like a
- 0:59breakdown on his public account to 13 million followers where he
- 1:04opened up about the harassment, doxing and abuse that he
- 1:08receives constantly as a content creator for simply being seen as
- 1:12like cringe or embarrassing. Part of this harassment, he
- 1:16explained, was that intimate photos that photographer took of
- 1:19him when he was much younger, starting out in the industry,
- 1:23we're starting to circulate, and there was this narrative that he
- 1:27was like a past porn star. So now about a month after all
- 1:32of this, Chris is trying to reclaim his narrative and he
- 1:35seems to be using his spam account to do so.
- 1:38So Chris's spam account has over 4 million followers.
- 1:41It's like 4.4 million followers and it is private.
- 1:44Over the past week or so, he's been reportedly asking his
- 1:47followers to spread like certain rumors about him as kind of an
- 1:50inside joke. And part of this inside joke is
- 1:53that they must call him Christopher Olsen instead of
- 1:56Chris Olsen to easily identify who was part of the inside joke
- 2:01and who's like doing this kind of to be on Chris's side.
- 2:04So if you guys see Tik Toks where it's like Christopher
- 2:07Olsen, then you know, know that this is part of this inside
- 2:10joke. This is part of like his spam
- 2:12account community. So some of the rumors include
- 2:14that he and Jonathan Bailey were seen flirting at the Emmys, that
- 2:18he's brothers with the Olsen twins, which is believable.
- 2:22And one that went super viral was that he sold his coffee
- 2:26company for $100 million. So I don't really know what the
- 2:29reason behind him doing this on his spam account is.
- 2:32It's probably partly just for fun.
- 2:34I think it's partly to get some more followers and it probably
- 2:38is a little a little bit to shift the discussion and like
- 2:40regain control of his narrative. Because previous to, you know,
- 2:44this past week, if you searched his name on TikTok, it was a lot
- 2:47of commentary videos and videos kind of talking about those
- 2:51intimate photos being circulated and everything that he was
- 2:53talking about with being harassed and docks and all that
- 2:56stuff. And it was videos of support, of
- 2:58course, But still, it was videos that you don't necessarily want
- 3:02coming up when you search your name on TikTok.
- 3:04Like, you know, he probably doesn't want to constantly be
- 3:07reminded of this. So now when you search his name
- 3:09on the app, instead of these commentary videos or videos
- 3:12talking about this like really traumatic thing that happened to
- 3:14him last month, it is videos by his fans kind of participating
- 3:18in this inside joke. And I think it's really
- 3:20impressive that he's been able to essentially turn an account
- 3:25with over 4 million followers. He's able to make that feel like
- 3:29intimate and like the followers that are participating in this,
- 3:33that they're part of some like underground, like a niche inside
- 3:36joke when there's quite literally 4.4 million of them.
- 3:40I think that's so impressive. It's such a testament to how
- 3:43amazing he is at first of all, TikTok, like he is a superstar
- 3:46TikTok. He just gets it.
- 3:48He's so good at social media and a testament to his community
- 3:52building. And I also didn't know he had a
- 3:55coffee company. So that rumor is also really
- 3:58good PR first coffee company. So I kind of love this.
- 4:01I know there's mixed opinions, but when you have a following
- 4:04that big, there's always going to be mixed opinions about
- 4:07literally any decision you make online.
- 4:09So I personally think this is funny.
- 4:11I think it's a great way to shift the narrative about him.
- 4:14Some people are like, oh, he just is doing this all for like
- 4:17attention. All he cares about is being
- 4:19talked about. Well, that's how you stay
- 4:21relevant. I think it's light hearted and
- 4:23low stakes enough. Does that make sense?
- 4:26Low stakes enough, whatever, you know what I mean?
- 4:29That I think this is a really great way to kind of drum up
- 4:33almost like organic PR for yourself and make your followers
- 4:38also feel part of something and be able to support you in like a
- 4:41tangible way that is not asking them for money.
- 4:45You know? The next story that I have for
- 4:46you guys is that beauty. Tik toker Gloria George has
- 4:50announced a social media hiatus due to racist comments.
- 4:55So Gloria George has announced that she's taking a break from
- 4:58social media due to colorist, anti black and racist comments.
- 5:02Gloria has built a following of over 2.2 million for her makeup
- 5:06tutorials and product reviews, where she often focuses on
- 5:10reviewing collections or launches from brands based on
- 5:13their inclusivity and how well they cater to deeper skin tones.
- 5:17Some of Gloria's notable work includes when she called out
- 5:19Euphoria in 2023 for its lack of inclusivity.
- 5:23This. Is the darkest shade?
- 5:25Is the alleged shade here in the room with us?
- 5:28This keeps happening because tone inclusivity is not
- 5:30something these beauty companies are worried about.
- 5:32They do not. Care and more recently when she
- 5:34reviewed The Road Blushes. These are the brand new road
- 5:37blushes. I bought these 3 shades because
- 5:39I feel like these would be the three shades that would work on
- 5:41dark skin. First shade we're going in with
- 5:43is Juice Box. Let's just go directly on the
- 5:45face. Let's blender out.
- 5:49This ash is bigger than me. Literally zooming in so you guys
- 5:52can see the sick work. Spicy mark is a really pretty
- 5:55orange color. Let's see what spicy marg is.
- 5:57These can't be the blushes y'all love.
- 6:00And then she followed this up soon after revealing that Haley
- 6:03Bieber had personally called her on the phone just after giving
- 6:07birth. So she wrote in a tick tock
- 6:09comment, she took accountability.
- 6:10She didn't dismiss my experience.
- 6:12She listened and made sure that I was compensated for shade
- 6:15consulting. Go, go, go, Haley.
- 6:17This all happened when I was in Europe.
- 6:19So I didn't report on that specifically.
- 6:21I just wanted to say actually on a note on the Haley Bieber note,
- 6:24this is obviously not the point of this story, but I am hoping
- 6:28that this is kind of more of what we'll see with millennials
- 6:33and Gen. Z coming into our own as like
- 6:35the leaders in the workplace, the leaders at brands, brand
- 6:39owners. I'm hoping that the way that
- 6:42Haley handled this situation specifically is like a testament
- 6:46to the future of brand development and marketing and
- 6:53just interacting with consumers. So Gloria is making a name for
- 6:57herself and doing some really amazing work as a beauty
- 7:00influencer. However, the horrible reality is
- 7:03that fighting for change like this does come at a cost.
- 7:06And for Gloria, she is facing so much bigotry, harassment, and
- 7:10racism. So now she has announced that
- 7:12she is taking a break from social media.
- 7:14She wrote. Hi babes, I'm logging off for a
- 7:16bit. The Internet has become an
- 7:18increasingly violent space, particularly for dark skinned
- 7:22black women. It's heartbreaking and harmful
- 7:24to constantly confront the overwhelming colorist, anti
- 7:27black and racist rhetoric that's directed at us by the masses.
- 7:31No one should be forced to endure that level of emotional
- 7:34trauma. What's even more disturbing is
- 7:35how bigotry and white fragility are amplified when Black women,
- 7:38especially those with darker skin, speak out.
- 7:41The world consistently refuses to listen to us or acknowledge
- 7:44our experiences. There's a persistent failure to
- 7:47see dark skinned Black women as fully human, as deserving of the
- 7:51same empathy, respect, and grace afforded to others.
- 7:54We are often dehumanized, either erased or harshly criticized,
- 7:58because the world doesn't know how to engage with our existence
- 8:01beyond stereotypes and shallow narratives.
- 8:04This is a harsh reality. Society has long been
- 8:07conditioned to dismiss us, to see us as less deserving of care
- 8:10and protection. That dehumanization allows for
- 8:13the continued disrespect and disregard of our voices, our
- 8:16bodies, and our contributions. This has to change.
- 8:20Black women deserve to be treated with dignity, Black
- 8:22creatives deserve recognition and respect, and dark skinned
- 8:25women deserve to be seen, valued, and humanized in every
- 8:28sense. We are not here to be performers
- 8:31for the world's consumption, nor are we here to be your punching
- 8:34bag. We are here to live fully with
- 8:36the humanity that should never be questioned or denied.
- 8:39Gloria, this is just so sad. Like Gloria is such a force in
- 8:44the industry. Like I said, she has been really
- 8:47building her following, building a name for herself, her
- 8:51credibility over the last particularly, I would say 2
- 8:54years. But of course, she's been doing
- 8:55social for a while. And this is just the very sad
- 9:00reality, I think, for so many black women that are online in
- 9:05general, period, as influencers, but especially who are
- 9:08discussing inclusivity, diversity, all of those topics
- 9:11that are so important to be discussed.
- 9:13And I just cannot understand why you as a white person would be
- 9:20triggered or upset by somebody explaining their experience with
- 9:26not feeling included. Just because black women are
- 9:30asking for more inclusive shade ranges doesn't mean that those
- 9:34brands are going to make less shades that are available to
- 9:37you. And even if that actually is
- 9:39what that means, there are literally thousands of makeup
- 9:43brands on the market. I am sure as a lighter skinned
- 9:47person you can find one or two and mix them up and create your
- 9:52own shade. Did we not all watch like 2015,
- 9:562016 beauty gurus? That's what they were all doing.
- 9:58There are so many options on the market and these women are
- 10:03specifically telling us and have been for like literally 20 plus
- 10:06years, there are not enough options for us.
- 10:09I can't believe that she is having to take a step back.
- 10:11Like I feel like Gloria is like really coming into her own.
- 10:13Like she's really coming up as like one of the most notable
- 10:17TikTok stars at least kind of in my realm.
- 10:19And obviously I am very immersed in the beauty realm, but still
- 10:23she is so buzzy. Like she is becoming such a star
- 10:27on TikTok. And for her kind of in her
- 10:30moment when she's, I feel like about to like really make it
- 10:33mainstream. To have to pull back and take a
- 10:36break is just so fucked up. OK, the next story is a little
- 10:40bit of a palate cleanser for us, a little bit of like a nice
- 10:44little story here from TikTok. We don't get a lot of those.
- 10:47We need to talk about how Mudang is getting her own live stream.
- 10:52So Mudang is this week's most viral TikTok star.
- 10:56She is a 2 month old pygmy hippo from the Cao Kio open zoo in
- 11:00Thailand. And she is literally everywhere
- 11:03because she's just so cute. Like I don't know, there's it's
- 11:06just one of those moments on the Internet where we've all
- 11:08collectively come together and decided Mudang is like this
- 11:13weeks queen. We love her because she is so
- 11:15wholesome. This is like the cutest content
- 11:17ever. She is like Oh my God I'm
- 11:19obsessed with her. I've been sending videos of her
- 11:22to Sean literally all weekend. She reminds me so much of
- 11:26Pumpkin my dog. So people really love her
- 11:30specifically because she can't eat solid food yet, but she
- 11:33mimics her mom eating. So like her mom will eat and
- 11:36then Moodang will be like either in the food bowl as well or
- 11:40she'll be like beside her and she'll be like chomping but
- 11:44she's not eating anything because she can't eat solid food
- 11:46yet. It's actually so cute.
- 11:48Anyways, now she's obviously this huge sensation, so she is
- 11:51getting a 24/7 live stream according to The Associated
- 11:55Press. And I actually don't know if
- 11:57there is a creator fund in Thailand, but I hope for the
- 12:00zoo's sake there is because there's actually not the creator
- 12:03fund in Australia. Fun fact, I don't think a lot of
- 12:07people know that, but there's actually not the creator fund in
- 12:10a lot of countries so Moodang. Regardless though, even if there
- 12:14is no creators fund, she has increased the zoo's visitorship.
- 12:19So apparently the zoo had over 10,000 visitors just last
- 12:24weekend and I can't even imagine how many they had this weekend
- 12:27because she is even more famous now.
- 12:29OK, the next story that I have is that Taylor Frank you Paul is
- 12:33rumored to have split from her boyfriend amid secret lives of
- 12:37Mormon wives controversy. So Secret Lives of Mormon Wives
- 12:41* Taylor Taylor Frankie Paul teased over the weekend that she
- 12:44may have split from her boyfriend, Dakota.
- 12:46So Taylor and Dakota starred in the first season of Secret Lives
- 12:49of Mormon Wives, which just aired a couple of weeks ago.
- 12:52Upon the show's release, fans had big concerns about their
- 12:55relationship as Dakota seems controlling and possibly
- 12:59emotionally or verbally abusive based on some of the texts that
- 13:03were shared on the show. And some of like Macy, for
- 13:06example, one of Taylor's besties was like, I'm concerned about
- 13:10him. So just based on like what we
- 13:11saw on the show. The first season documents the
- 13:13couple getting pregnant and preparing for their first baby
- 13:16together where they spend basically the entire season
- 13:19fighting. And almost everyone on the cast
- 13:23is talking about how they should break up.
- 13:24Anyways, now Taylor has posted this TikTok that has fans
- 13:27questioning if she and Dakota have split.
- 13:30In the TikTok, Taylor looks like she's crying to the sound.
- 13:33I had to go through hell to prove I'm not insane.
- 13:35I had to meet the devil just to know his name with the text not
- 13:39me slowly morphing into 2022 me over top of it.
- 13:43So that was already SUS. But then her cast mates and mom
- 13:47talk besties Macy and Michaela commented.
- 13:50So Macy wrote this new chapter will be better than ever.
- 13:54Lean on us. We got you baby.
- 13:56And Michaela wrote always here for you BB.
- 13:58It's hard to know because Taylor posts a lot of clickbait stuff
- 14:02and her actual like start on TikTok was she would make up
- 14:06these rumors about herself or like, I don't know, I guess it
- 14:09was kind of like lies. She would make up these lies
- 14:12about her story and tell them as if they were facts.
- 14:14She was like trolling. She was like giving like big
- 14:16troll energy. So it is hard because she is
- 14:18kind of like a troll. And maybe it is just, you know,
- 14:21to drum up some more press for the show.
- 14:23But the show has a lot of press and there is already a lot of
- 14:26controversy with her in Dakota. So I would actually be surprised
- 14:29because now she has a baby with Dakota.
- 14:31Like I would be surprised if she was using, you know, the rumors
- 14:34about their relationship and the opinions about their
- 14:36relationship to troll. But who knows.
- 14:39Anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 14:41Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 14:44and subscribe. We need some more Apple reviews.
- 14:47I feel like we were getting a lot last year and now we're
- 14:51getting a lot more like YouTube comments and reviews.
- 14:54So if you guys are on Apple and you haven't left us a review,
- 14:57please do. I love you guys and I will talk
- 14:59to you tomorrow. Bye.
