- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And so when they continued asking him,
- 0:05Speaker 1: he lifted up himself and said unto them, He that
- 0:09Speaker 1: is without sin among you, let him cast a stone
- 0:13Speaker 1: at her. John 8.7 Renew, refresh, restart. These are the
- 0:23Speaker 1: words that come to mind as I meditate on John 7.1-8.12.
- 0:26Speaker 1: When I am in a moment of remorse, When I've
- 0:31Speaker 1: made a mistake, I will remember your commands. When I
- 0:36Speaker 1: allow you to take control of my situation, Jesus, through
- 0:39Speaker 1: your power and in your knowledge, you give me the
- 0:43Speaker 1: opportunity to have my situation altered for the better. It
- 0:48Speaker 1: doesn't matter what my punishment should be. When you alter
- 0:51Speaker 1: a situation, you have the ability to delete the sin
- 0:55Speaker 1: in my life so that I can have a fresh restart.
- 1:00Speaker 1: like the woman in today's story. Thank you that whoever
- 1:05Speaker 1: is trying to ridicule and parade my mistake around publicly,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you will silence, and that they will walk away and
- 1:14Speaker 1: reflect on the grace they've been given as well. Let
- 1:18Speaker 1: this fresh restart be the starting point of a repentant heart.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Remove any sin or hindrance within my life, that would
- 1:28Speaker 1: move me backwards instead of forward into the glorious future
- 1:33Speaker 1: you have for me. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 1:42Speaker 1: for making prayer a priority in your day. To learn

- 2:34Speaker 3: You without sin cast the first stone. In our last story,
- 2:39Speaker 3: Jesus spoke hard truths about being the bread of life.
- 2:44Speaker 3: He spoke of how he was sent by God from heaven,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and whoever ate his flesh and drank his blood would
- 2:50Speaker 3: inherit eternal life. Although Jesus spoke metaphorically, his words caused
- 2:55Speaker 3: many to leave. However, the disciples stayed, for they knew
- 2:59Speaker 3: that only Jesus held the words of eternal life. Now
- 3:03Speaker 3: we witness a woman caught in shame. She is treated
- 3:07Speaker 3: like an animal and drug out in public. She will
- 3:10Speaker 3: soon come face to face with the scandalous power of
- 3:13Speaker 3: God's grace. Inspired by the Gospels.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Hello and welcome to today's episode of the Bible in
- 3:22Speaker 4: a Year podcast. I'm Jack Graham. In yesterday's episode, we
- 3:27Speaker 4: heard as Jesus spoke very powerful words. showing us that
- 3:31Speaker 4: he is the one who is sent from God, the
- 3:33Speaker 4: very bread of heaven, who gives eternal life and satisfaction
- 3:37Speaker 4: to our hearts. Many could not accept his words and
- 3:41Speaker 4: departed that day, but others said, You have the words
- 3:44Speaker 4: of eternal life. To whom shall we go? The disciples
- 3:48Speaker 4: remained by his side, believing that he is who he
- 3:51Speaker 4: said he was, the Messiah, the one sent from God
- 3:54Speaker 4: to be the Savior of the world. Today, We'll hear
- 3:58Speaker 4: how Jesus steps in to rescue a woman caught in adultery,
- 4:02Speaker 4: an act that would have cost her her life. But
- 4:04Speaker 4: in the midst of the ruthless condemnation of religious leaders,
- 4:08Speaker 4: Jesus will shine the light of God's incredible grace upon her,
- 4:12Speaker 4: offering her restoration and redemption, a brand new life. So,
- 4:17Speaker 4: let's listen now to today's reading from God's Word.
- 4:21Speaker 3: The woman's jaw crashed against the stony dirt. She gasped
- 4:25Speaker 3: for air as she turned to her side. Her mouth
- 4:28Speaker 3: was dripping with blood and her clothes were falling off
- 4:31Speaker 3: her body. She had been caught in the act of
- 4:34Speaker 3: adultery by her husband and then drug out of her
- 4:37Speaker 3: bed into the city streets. Half naked, hurt and afraid,
- 4:42Speaker 3: she looked up at the crowd staring at her. They
- 4:45Speaker 3: laughed and scoffed. Shame welled up within her. Her body
- 4:49Speaker 3: and spirit were bruised. Tears fell upon the dust as
- 4:53Speaker 3: she listened to the religious leaders behind her. The Pharisees
- 4:57Speaker 3: had drug her into the middle of the courtyard for
- 5:00Speaker 3: all to see. They made a spectacle of her. She
- 5:03Speaker 3: was reduced to nothing as the whole crowd looked at
- 5:06Speaker 3: her in disgust. She closed her eyes in shame. She
- 5:11Speaker 3: knew what people did to women caught in adultery. She
- 5:14Speaker 3: knew she was about to be stoned. Teacher, one of
- 5:18Speaker 3: the Pharisees shouted, this woman has been caught in adultery.
- 5:23Speaker 3: According to the law of Moses, she should be stoned.
- 5:27Speaker 3: The woman wondered who the Pharisees were talking to, so
- 5:30Speaker 3: she opened her eyes and looked. There, standing in front
- 5:34Speaker 3: of the crowd, was Jesus. The Pharisees had brought her
- 5:37Speaker 3: to him, trying to trap him into forgiving a woman
- 5:40Speaker 3: who was clearly guilty. One of the Pharisees grabbed the
- 5:44Speaker 3: woman by the hair and shouted, So what do you
- 5:46Speaker 3: say now, Jesus? What should be done to her? Will
- 5:49Speaker 3: you obey the law of Moses? Tears streamed down the
- 5:53Speaker 3: woman's face as she looked at Jesus. His eyes were
- 5:57Speaker 3: filled with concern and comfort. Yet underneath Jesus' expression was
- 6:02Speaker 3: a rumbling of anger. Not anger towards her, but the
- 6:06Speaker 3: men who would treat her like an animal to prove
- 6:08Speaker 3: a point. The religious leaders loomed over her, waiting for
- 6:12Speaker 3: Jesus to speak. Instead of replying, Jesus took two steps
- 6:16Speaker 3: forward and crouched down into the dirt. He began to
- 6:19Speaker 3: write words in the dust with his finger. There was
- 6:22Speaker 3: a silence as the Pharisees read what Jesus was writing.
- 6:26Speaker 3: The woman could not see what Jesus was carving into
- 6:28Speaker 3: the dirt, but she did notice that it made the
- 6:31Speaker 3: religious leaders uncomfortable. Jesus stood to his feet and looked
- 6:35Speaker 3: at them. He picked up a stone off the floor
- 6:38Speaker 3: and walked towards them. The woman's heart raced. Would Jesus
- 6:42Speaker 3: give them permission to stone her? Would Jesus be the
- 6:45Speaker 3: one to throw the stone first? Jesus extended the stone
- 6:49Speaker 3: towards the Pharisees and said, If any among you is
- 6:53Speaker 3: without sin, let him throw the first stone. Jesus dropped
- 6:58Speaker 3: the stone in front of the woman and Pharisees. It
- 7:01Speaker 3: fell to the floor with a thud. Everyone was silent.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Jesus knelt down again and continued riding in the dirt.
- 7:09Speaker 3: The men looked at his words written in the dust,
- 7:11Speaker 3: and one by one they began to leave. Each man,
- 7:16Speaker 3: beginning with the oldest, departed in a hurry. The woman
- 7:19Speaker 3: watched as the men grumbled. Their faces were filled with worry.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Perhaps they did not want anyone to read what Jesus
- 7:26Speaker 3: was writing. Perhaps it was about them. The Pharisees left
- 7:31Speaker 3: in a hurry, and the crowds left when they realized
- 7:33Speaker 3: nobody was going to be stoned. All that remained was
- 7:37Speaker 3: Jesus and the woman. She was still sitting on the floor,
- 7:40Speaker 3: her knees were bleeding, and her eyes were red. Her
- 7:44Speaker 3: scalp was sore from being drug out by her hair,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and she was still embarrassed by her nakedness. Jesus walked
- 7:50Speaker 3: over to her and knelt onto the floor. He took
- 7:54Speaker 3: the robe off his back and draped it over the
- 7:56Speaker 3: woman's shoulders. He looked at the woman and then looked
- 7:59Speaker 3: around the empty courtyard. My child, he said, who is
- 8:04Speaker 3: left to condemn you? The woman looked around. Her heart
- 8:08Speaker 3: was filled with shame and gladness. She wept. Her tears
- 8:12Speaker 3: fell into the dirt before Jesus. She shook her head
- 8:16Speaker 3: and answered, There is no one left to condemn me, Lord.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Jesus propped up her chin so her eyes met his.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Then neither do I condemn you. Then Jesus helped the
- 8:27Speaker 3: woman to her feet. Go and sin no more. So
- 8:31Speaker 3: the woman departed, feeling the full weight of forgiveness. The
- 8:36Speaker 3: words Jesus spoke to Nicodemus were proven true that day,
- 8:40Speaker 3: that the Son of God did not come to condemn
- 8:42Speaker 3: the world, but that by him the whole world would
- 8:45Speaker 3: be saved, saved from the shame that plagued humanity since
- 8:49Speaker 3: the Garden of Eden. God once clothed Adam and Eve
- 8:52Speaker 3: with the skin of an animal when they were naked.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Now Jesus clothed this woman with grace. This would be
- 8:59Speaker 3: an image of what he would do for all humanity.
- 9:02Speaker 3: He would clothe them in forgiveness and righteousness. Soon all
- 9:06Speaker 3: would feel the full weight of Jesus' love and sacrifice.
- 9:11Speaker 3: This would inspire people to go and sin no more.
- 9:18Speaker 4: We begin today's reading with an unnamed woman caught in sin,
- 9:22Speaker 4: adulterous sin, as she is being humiliated before a crowd
- 9:26Speaker 4: of onlookers. She had been discovered in the act of adultery,
- 9:30Speaker 4: caught in the act, as it were, and the Pharisees
- 9:33Speaker 4: cruel and bitter, it seemed, were out for justice. At
- 9:36Speaker 4: least that's how they wanted it to appear. Old Testament
- 9:40Speaker 4: laws stated that such a woman should be stoned to
- 9:42Speaker 4: death for her infidelity. But these men really weren't seeking justice.
- 9:48Speaker 4: They were actually trying to set a trap for Jesus.
- 9:51Speaker 4: There was no denying this woman had done wrong, but
- 9:53Speaker 4: their quest was not for righteousness. They wanted to turn
- 9:57Speaker 4: the tables and regain control that they'd lost to this
- 10:00Speaker 4: merciful teacher, the Messiah named Jesus, who had come onto
- 10:03Speaker 4: the scene. So they paraded this woman, abused this woman,
- 10:08Speaker 4: a pawn in their scheme, into a public square and
- 10:11Speaker 4: cast her to the ground, challenging Jesus to decide what
- 10:15Speaker 4: should happen to her. In so many ways, this woman
- 10:18Speaker 4: represents a deep fear many people fear, the sin and
- 10:22Speaker 4: the shame that people bear. And that someday our greatest
- 10:26Speaker 4: failures and falls will be brought to light in a
- 10:28Speaker 4: public matter, that our secrets will be shouted from the rooftops,
- 10:32Speaker 4: that family and friends and even strangers will know of
- 10:35Speaker 4: our mistakes and our mess-ups, our grievous sins. Jesus, however,
- 10:40Speaker 4: wasn't going to play the Pharisees' game. Instead, he quietly
- 10:44Speaker 4: knelt down and wrote something in the dirt. What he
- 10:47Speaker 4: wrote will remain a mystery. We don't know, as we're
- 10:50Speaker 4: not told what he wrote or what he meant. Whatever
- 10:53Speaker 4: it was, it didn't deter the religious leaders. They continued
- 10:57Speaker 4: to press Jesus to determine the woman's fate. Jesus simply
- 11:01Speaker 4: stood and faced them and gave a challenge to the men.
- 11:05Speaker 4: If you are sinless, by all means, throw a stone.
- 11:10Speaker 4: It was a challenge that not even the self-righteous Pharisees
- 11:13Speaker 4: could take on. But Jesus wasn't done. He knelt again
- 11:17Speaker 4: and silently wrote in the dirt once more. And with that,
- 11:21Speaker 4: the men slunk away in defeat. Their plan had failed,
- 11:26Speaker 4: and eventually all that remained were Jesus and the woman.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I can imagine Jesus standing there with the woman, looking
- 11:33Speaker 4: over her shoulder to the left and to the right,
- 11:35Speaker 4: and then asking, Where did everyone go? Did no one
- 11:38Speaker 4: condemn you? And the woman, who surely had believed her
- 11:42Speaker 4: death was to be imminent, looks up and sees no
- 11:45Speaker 4: one to condemn her. Timidly, she speaks back to Jesus, saying,
- 11:50Speaker 4: No one, Lord. We see Jesus' reply in John 8, 11.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I do not condemn you either. Go from now on
- 11:58Speaker 4: to sin no more. Can you imagine the weight of
- 12:02Speaker 4: guilt that was lifted from her shoulders as she experienced
- 12:05Speaker 4: God and His grace? If you have ever experienced God's forgiveness,
- 12:10Speaker 4: then maybe you have some idea. I know I do.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Like her, we all stand accused of sin, and there
- 12:16Speaker 4: is no question as to our guilt and even our shame.
- 12:20Speaker 4: But like her, we have been touched by the power
- 12:23Speaker 4: of God through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 12:25Speaker 4: We have been forgiven, and now we live free from
- 12:28Speaker 4: the shackles of sin. You see, this reading is not
- 12:31Speaker 4: about Jesus overlooking sin or acting like she wasn't guilty.
- 12:36Speaker 4: All have sinned. We all deserve punishment and even judgment.
- 12:41Speaker 4: But this passage today focuses on the words of Jesus,
- 12:45Speaker 4: I do not condemn you. So if we read this
- 12:48Speaker 4: passage and focus only on the words, I do not
- 12:50Speaker 4: condemn you, then we miss the big point. Jesus did
- 12:54Speaker 4: not deny her sin or guilt. He forgave her for it.
- 12:58Speaker 4: He released her from it and freed her not to
- 13:00Speaker 4: sin or to live in sin again. This is all
- 13:04Speaker 4: made possible because of what Jesus did for us, and
- 13:07Speaker 4: it's the message of the gospel, that God's grace is
- 13:10Speaker 4: greater than our sins. that what he did on the
- 13:13Speaker 4: cross includes every sin by every person. He himself paid
- 13:17Speaker 4: the price and the judgment for our sins. He paid
- 13:20Speaker 4: a debt he did not owe because we owed a
- 13:23Speaker 4: debt that we could not pay. Jesus sets us free
- 13:26Speaker 4: from the power of sin and death so that we
- 13:28Speaker 4: can go live an abundant and eternal life. Let's pray.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Dear God, we thank you for today's scripture that teaches
- 13:37Speaker 4: us your amazing grace. We give thanks to you because
- 13:41Speaker 4: we have been forgiven. and freed from the penalty of
- 13:44Speaker 4: death through your son Jesus and by the power of
- 13:47Speaker 4: his resurrection. Thank you for your love for us. In Jesus'
- 13:51Speaker 4: name we pray. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's
