- 0:46Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49My name is Curtis Wilson, I'm Brad Ziegler.
- 0:52How you doing buddy? Buddy, Thursday Night, Football
- 0:57all around playoff, baseball, all around.
- 1:02Command Center, engaged engaged, gin and tonic engaged.
- 1:08Seeing my wide receiver have a fantasy for hours here.
- 1:12You have a solid first half and Alan Robinson about five and a
- 1:15half points, get anybody playing tonight, I've got one Smith's.
- 1:20Oh okay, he's doing well so far. He's got like four points so
- 1:27hard to find a player. That's that's a solid first
- 1:30time. In fact, if I can get 8, For my
- 1:33defensive player I'm happy, I always go some type of inside
- 1:37linebacker just because tackle volume is usually consistent.
- 1:41I'm not trying to get like 20 points from that position
- 1:45because it's so anybody that's getting 20 points is probably
- 1:49also you know having very up-and-down games.
- 1:52Going to give you a goose egg every now and then.
- 1:53So I go with the guys that are going to consistently give me 7
- 1:59to 10 points and if you know if they get a pick or they get a
- 2:03Fumble return or something like that for a touchdown.
- 2:05All the better. Yeah, folks.
- 2:09What Brian's discussing is something we playing in a league
- 2:12together, this is your eighth run with the other and about
- 2:18third fourth year in me and Brian decided to we've got to do
- 2:21some different stuff. We got to make this league fun,
- 2:24so we had this genius idea individual defensive players.
- 2:30Some people hate it, some people love it but it you have to
- 2:34actually know more about football and do more studying
- 2:38because to bronze Point usually linebackers or the guys, you
- 2:42want their more than steady Eddie's.
- 2:44Now you can go get a defensive end like I think Nick was my
- 2:48head Nick. Both the last year I played in
- 2:50quite a few times or play them one time and it was like the
- 2:53game yet, three sacks, six tackles, who tackles for losses.
- 2:58So his numbers were Like 16 and a half and it's just like that's
- 3:04that's not fair. Yeah.
- 3:06But then you know there's one of those games where you get 0 64
- 3:09tackles maybe one tackle for loss and yeah, it's like Five
- 3:13Points. So it's one of those interesting
- 3:17pieces because every year it's like what do you take this guy
- 3:20and if there's somebody out there in a certain round that
- 3:22you know, tackles 175 has 175, tackles of gain or year?
- 3:27You're like, I need that guy. It's like Like having Rook
- 3:32exactly. Exactly.
- 3:33I think Brooke last year, if you like like do everything that he
- 3:37did, he would have averaged like 10 points a game maybe 11 points
- 3:41again. Yeah, what's a good name in?
- 3:43Probably the couple games where he had, you know, some sacks or
- 3:46some forced fumbles or anything like that.
- 3:49He would have been around the 15 to 20 point range on a good on a
- 3:52good game. So I've Loved.
- 3:55All right, we're going to get into it.
- 3:56But before we get into Know, The Enemy real quick hokey, Headline
- 4:00wide receiver out of Tennessee trade Curry who committed back
- 4:03in July. D commits, what they weird
- 4:06midnight post of my by officially open for really like
- 4:14movement is 100% open to all teams.
- 4:18Yeah, remember when he first committed it was like an initial
- 4:24light kind of a shock, you know, we you saw him in on the offered
- 4:28list but you never thought much of And it was kind of cool.
- 4:31This is good. Yeah, big-bodied receiver kind
- 4:34of really awkward that he D commits.
- 4:36After the first two games were bird, literally throwing things
- 4:39that he could do his first day on campus.
- 4:45What would any tape on this brown or just, you know, it is
- 4:48what it is doing. If you weren't sitting to know,
- 4:52I'd feel a whole lot worse about this, but I think with
- 4:56everything that we've been dealing with the last, Last few
- 5:01weeks with guys being potentially out for games and
- 5:04things like that. This is like, not even denting
- 5:07the radar and it was a guy that probably of all the ones on our
- 5:14commit list. We probably felt the least
- 5:17secure about. Oh yeah.
- 5:20Despite even some of the the word coming down that he know he
- 5:23wasn't, you know, listening to other teens and things like
- 5:25that. You know, there was a situation
- 5:28with what was going on with him. He's old high school going to
- 5:30this new high school and there was just a whole lot of
- 5:33uncertainty already around the commitment so you know if one
- 5:37was going to D commit it was probably going to be Curry so
- 5:41it's happened we'll address it and go from there man on Capitol
- 5:47Hill, Let's Do It. Let's Go.
- 5:50All right so let's start with the breakdown here.
- 5:53We're going to start on the offensive side of the ball like
- 5:55review most weeks and I want to kind of dive into Brown.
- 5:58Well I think we I mean you feel is what they're going to have to
- 6:02do too and I think they're going to have to pass the ball to win
- 6:04with Sam how hello Young quarterback.
- 6:08So I just went around. I know, you look at some tapes.
- 6:11I've Deep dive some stats. So I want to take a look at some
- 6:13stats first thing, we're going to look into some of your
- 6:15findings, and this is kind of what I'm finding out, all right.
- 6:18So so far through the first two games, they're ranking 24 and
- 6:22pass efficiency at 140 4.30, so, You know, top third not legally,
- 6:29but top third still respectable average, shouldn't 260 yards, a
- 6:33game. So again, solid number on 4:30
- 6:37attempts is slightly up, was 8.6 last year's 8.7 this year.
- 6:41So small tenth of a point now, where he's really, you know,
- 6:46going to the next level is completion percentage last year,
- 6:50for the total year. Sixty one point four so far this
- 6:53year, 65%. So, you know, you're looking at
- 6:56Or write or percent increase which, you know, people don't
- 7:01say, well, that's not that much but over time, you know?
- 7:04Yeah, that's one or two passes, a game.
- 7:07And when you're hitting one or two extra passes a game between,
- 7:10that's probably two or three, extra first downs of game.
- 7:13Exactly. And that's one of those things
- 7:15where you kind of take last year, a couple extra passes made
- 7:18in that six overtime, Thriller. It might have went their way,
- 7:22not our way smell. Something that does show some
- 7:25regression. Mm.
- 7:27So last year, he was one of the best in the nation is touchdown.
- 7:30Interception ratio was five. Point four, two one.
- 7:33That's damn good. I would take that for our
- 7:35quarterbacks in a heartbeat this year.
- 7:38So far, though, through two games, small sample size, three
- 7:41touchdowns, three interceptions. And he's pretty much halfway to
- 7:46where he was with his interception total last year.
- 7:49Now, sort of looking at the two teams they played so far, their
- 7:54past defense rankings, They're not bad but they're not great
- 8:00Syracuse is ranked 30th PCS ranked 25th.
- 8:05This is out of roughly seventy two teams who have played a
- 8:07game, not counting you Houston, you finally got on the field.
- 8:11Good for you tonight as you started going through the tape
- 8:15of this year. Just a couple games we have.
- 8:18What are we seeing about saying, how this year?
- 8:23I mean he's about what we saw last year, I think.
- 8:26He's a little more poised, a little more accurate with the
- 8:30ball this year, but he has taken those couple of extra Chances
- 8:34with it like that. You've noticed there we've got
- 8:37only 3 to 3 in terms of touchdown interception.
- 8:40But I mean, he's really good in the pot can.
- 8:43But he's also a guy that's going to move the pocket by sometimes
- 8:47with his legs. He'll Scamper for a first down
- 8:49here there. But what he's really looking to
- 8:51do, when he gets outside the pocket, he's looking to find
- 8:55receivers that are Creaking open on Scramble drill and, you know,
- 8:59getting some separation from the, their Defenders, once a
- 9:02route kind of breaks down there. So that's what he likes to do
- 9:05with that. He's gotten some really big
- 9:06plays once. He got outside the pocket,
- 9:09resetting his feet and throwing down field to plays.
- 9:12In particular, one was a touchdown toss to Javonte
- 9:17Williams, got outside the pocket right.
- 9:20At the line of scrimmage sets his feet delivers, a strike as
- 9:24Williams kind of breaks free from his man for A touchdown,
- 9:27have a similar one, didn't go for a touchdown, but went for a
- 9:31big game to Boca Rallo. So, I mean, he likes to do that
- 9:34type of stuff. And speaking of those running
- 9:37backs in the in the scramble drill, both Carter and Williams,
- 9:41Michael Carter, and Javonte Williams are going to be pretty
- 9:44dangerous in the passing game. They're both guys that can hurt
- 9:48you. A Javonte Williams is the guy
- 9:50that they're going to design kind of more of the route tree
- 9:54type things for To get him involved with passing down the
- 9:58field. But Michael Carter is the guy
- 10:00that's going to get a lot of the check downs and but he's a guy
- 10:03that can break some tackles make you miss and then make a big
- 10:06play out of it. So what have you what have you
- 10:09seen in the stats? From those guys, what you're
- 10:11seeing on tape is absolutely telling in the statistics
- 10:15because you talk about Williams, you more designed more getting
- 10:20out on the route tree. More big play potential.
- 10:22He's only got three receptions. But he's averaging 26 yard.
- 10:26Perception. You know?
- 10:27That's, that's big. That's a big play.
- 10:29That is one of those game Breakers where you're sitting at
- 10:32the 30, something like that happen.
- 10:33The fields flipped in Harvey, but to your point with quarter
- 10:37hoarder is second on the team in receptions, he's got seven so
- 10:41you talk about the check down clearly how he feels comfortable
- 10:46throwing to him out of the backfield, not as many yards,
- 10:50you know not as many as explosive plays but sometimes
- 10:53when your guy can get to that portion, All these reads, you're
- 10:58not taking losses so it's good. Now something I've noticed here,
- 11:02Braun, I think you're probably going to get a little up in your
- 11:05next segment. They have allowed six sacks in
- 11:08two games. That is the bottom half.
- 11:11No. So the seventy two teams.
- 11:13It's on the bottom half of allowed so far and it's 47.
- 11:17Yards loss on those sacks. So, what that's telling me at
- 11:23least the way I can kind of read it.
- 11:25I just about a year. Yd essentially that looks like
- 11:27potential coverage sex, probably not many scrambling.
- 11:31If you're averaging eight, my assumption would be.
- 11:33If he's running backwards, there's going to be some bigger
- 11:36numbers in there, not shorter numbers, which makes me feel
- 11:40good that if we can kind of create a good look on the back,
- 11:43end front for, we can get to Sam.
- 11:47Now, something that's been a little shocking, and when I read
- 11:52this, I kind of had a reread it again for the second time.
- 11:55So, last, Year. Poff.
- 11:57Graded, Sam how as the best. Password over 20 yards are yards
- 12:03with a clean pocket the belt. Okay.
- 12:08So far this year, not great. Bob no completions over 20 yards
- 12:14in two games. 04:10. So we see sacks, correlational
- 12:23Stacks eight yards, that's probably about the five to seven
- 12:26step drop. You know out of Center at a
- 12:29shotgun similar, right? Yep.
- 12:32Listen to this and I don't know if it's just him getting smarter
- 12:36as a pastor or them unable to take less risk.
- 12:40The are yards per attempt last year.
- 12:42There were nine point seven damn near 10 yards per attempt.
- 12:46Through the air this year, that's down to seven point four.
- 12:49So, two and a half yards lost, you know, I don't know, you
- 12:54know, as you're looking at the front if you're seeing it but
- 12:57you know, we're going to the receivers here in a second.
- 13:00Maybe maybe you've seen some stuff there.
- 13:02Now the one thing they are they're good in the Red Zone.
- 13:047475 touchdowns two field goals for rushing, touchdowns only one
- 13:10passing touchdown. So Bryan, I give you those
- 13:13numbers, especially, let's talk. Let's look at Really, those
- 13:17downfield numbers. And let's talk about those
- 13:19weapons. And some things change
- 13:21potentially there. So a couple of things have
- 13:25happened, and as you notice that, there's not a lot of down
- 13:28the feel attacking with the, with the pass game this year.
- 13:31And one thing I'm noticing is that we've kind of neutralized
- 13:36as Newsome a lot in this, this new season and I think he has
- 13:42what he receptions we 431 and he had a bout last year.
- 13:48Yeah, so I'll be that's a very, very slow start for him.
- 13:52He hasn't been able to kind of take the Top off the defense,
- 13:54like he was able to do last year looks like a lot of teams are
- 13:57kind of playing cover three variations, just trying to make
- 14:02sure that there's not a lot of space for those guys to run some
- 14:06of those deep routes. Now, they Ami Brown has been
- 14:09able to take advantage of that underneath the cover 3 shell.
- 14:15He's done a lot of good things in the passing game, he's been
- 14:18able to get kind of behind the linebackers and make some noise
- 14:23when he was in, man. Coverage a couple times.
- 14:25I saw him kind of get free of his man, get down the field a
- 14:29little bit, but as you were saying they're not able to hit
- 14:32some of those down feel things. And I think that that could come
- 14:35with time but it seems like the teams have adjusted to what UNC
- 14:40was doing with that downfield game last year and have taken
- 14:43some of that away this year which is something we're going
- 14:46to need to do in this game if we're going to have some
- 14:48success, you know, I like what brown has been able to do.
- 14:52I saw even, I know, We're running more Zone coverage this
- 14:55year. I saw him running kind of
- 14:56through zones and making some plays there with guys that are
- 15:00not moving at full speed in the zone there.
- 15:03So he's going to be a guy that we're going to have to tackle
- 15:06once he gets the ball in his hands.
- 15:08But going back to halman, we talked about you know what he
- 15:12does in the pocket and how he had a.
- 15:14Some of those sacks seems like a coverage sex, he sometimes tries
- 15:19to do too much. He's got a little bit of that,
- 15:23you know. Bit like Ben Roethlisberger, but
- 15:25he kind of has that mentality where he's going to stand in the
- 15:27pocket as long as he can to try to make a play and sometimes
- 15:31that that comes back to bite him if he doesn't recognize that
- 15:35something is there and he can't get out of the pocket.
- 15:37He's not somebody that's going to throw it away.
- 15:39You know, safely to avoid taking the Lost.
- 15:43He's going to either take the sack or Chuck it in the
- 15:46direction of a guy that can make a play and a couple times that's
- 15:50calls the sack and a couple of times that's caused him to throw
- 15:52an interception. Yeah.
- 15:54So what we're going to need to do is get pressure on him, make
- 15:57him throw it before, he's ready and make him.
- 16:02Try to take some of those extra risk with the football, make him
- 16:04uncomfortable but we also need to keep him in the damn pocket
- 16:08because he is he's been dangerous.
- 16:10When he's gotten outside the pocket can set his feet and kind
- 16:13of throwing that criminal drill starts.
- 16:16The third guy in there getting their passing game to watch
- 16:19though and this is a guy that's been hit a couple times.
- 16:21I know I mentioned him earlier is Beau Corrales.
- 16:23He's They're big body guys, 63 205 guy that you kind of run in
- 16:29the slots enough to seem that type of guy.
- 16:31They haven't hit him and he anything deep yet, but he's
- 16:35definitely a guy that can kind of work between the linebackers
- 16:37and make some plays and move the sticks for you.
- 16:40Let's talk real quick about their offensive line.
- 16:42Before we pivoted in terms, of password, before we pivot into
- 16:45the Run game, an offensive line is average and past Pro, not
- 16:49great, not bad. Like I said because of the The
- 16:53the way that how will hold onto the football in the pocket,
- 16:58you're going to occasionally get a few sacks against them.
- 17:01Their little susceptible, would you bring pressure?
- 17:04So I think I think you're going to see some of those possible
- 17:07delay blitzes that we saw in in the game against NC State
- 17:10coming. So look for that buddy.
- 17:14Tell me some about their their Rush game.
- 17:16What are the stats look like? That's look like they're
- 17:20balanced offense. 168 yards, a game.
- 17:24You know, with 12 points for Dimension, Davonte Williams and
- 17:26Michael Carter-Williams is averaging 4.6 of carry Carter
- 17:338.7. So definitely a big plate
- 17:35potential with Michael Carter. I can remember one of those big
- 17:37runs against Syracuse Williams has all the TVs.
- 17:41Now, before you jump into that, need you to just just two
- 17:44things. I want you to know about.
- 17:46Okay? Corrales is picking up Das has
- 17:49slack. He's tied with Corridor seven,
- 17:52receptions, 82, you Yards and Diana me.
- 17:56Although his stat line on looks good.
- 17:57Brian at 154 10. Receptions, his reception number
- 18:02is down from. 20.3 goes back again.
- 18:06We're correlating it, they're having to drive the field.
- 18:10Yeah. Ours, that Russian game goes,
- 18:12Braun. You know, Williams, Carter and
- 18:15got a good one-two, punch. And what are you seeing?
- 18:20You know, we're seeing the can't go down field.
- 18:23So, I You sleep, can't Warfield. You gotta depend a little bit
- 18:26more on the Run. Yeah, I mean we're looking at
- 18:29another, you know, it's a spread Zone run scheme.
- 18:32We've seen it really kind of out the gate with NC State little
- 18:37less so last week with Duke but they're still kind of the same
- 18:40philosophy. So, you know, look for a more
- 18:43balanced team than than Duke and NC State were.
- 18:46I know, we're looking at kind of different angles there where
- 18:49Duke was throwing the ball more, whereas NC State was trying to
- 18:53run the ball. A lot more especially early on
- 18:56before we kind of got that big lead on them.
- 18:58So this is a balanced team. They're going to be running and
- 19:01they can and passing the ball and they can do both with pretty
- 19:05good efficiency and what Carter does so well, is break tackles.
- 19:12I've seen it on the film a lot, man.
- 19:14He gets the ball in space. He's going to probably make the
- 19:17first guy Miss. So we got to be able to flow to
- 19:21the ball. And we got to be able to make
- 19:22tackles He is also very dangerous when he gets to the
- 19:27second level. So again we can't let one broken
- 19:31tackle turn into a 25-yard gain. We got to make sure that were
- 19:34flown to the football and making that stop and you know I'll give
- 19:38a little kudos to the offensive on there.
- 19:40Pretty good offensive line in terms of run blocking, good on
- 19:43the combo blocks and they do a good job of leading and kicking
- 19:49with their HVAC sin motion. So you'll see an HVAC going
- 19:52motion and either kick out the Guy or lead up for, for an
- 19:55outside zone or something like that.
- 19:56So they do a good job there, man.
- 19:59And you know, when we look at what we need to do to kind of
- 20:05exploit, and this point this defense in just because often,
- 20:10sorry, not not, let them rack up the points.
- 20:13I think the big thing we need to do is play the next play.
- 20:18Every time I saw him film, they got a chunk play, but then they
- 20:20would make a mistake. Or they would have a - play or,
- 20:25you know, something would happen.
- 20:26So we need to just keep playing the next play, not let one play
- 20:30result in a touchdown, you know, but three plays earlier.
- 20:35So that's what I think we need to do and I really took to have
- 20:41success. I want to see how kept in the
- 20:43pocket as much as possible. Where are you mentioned about
- 20:48the pot? Please, and I've given the stats
- 20:50of what they're doing in the Red Zone, but I mean against Boston
- 20:53College and Syracuse 31:26. So they're averaging under 30
- 20:57points. A game against, I think, what?
- 21:00We're considering, probably one of the worst teams in the ACC
- 21:06and BC, you know, BC maybe middle part of the pack the Gene
- 21:13and all that. One thing that they've kind of
- 21:16done good and I feel like you just mentioned it with the HVAC
- 21:21and I don't know if that's Waltz and they don't use the tight
- 21:23end. He's got to receptions all year.
- 21:25So clearly the way you mention HX, it sounds like they're
- 21:28blocking, they're not going to be any sort of threat in the
- 21:31pass game, but they actually are putting on third down.
- 21:35They're ranked 21st, they're converting, 48 percent of their
- 21:38third down to me, you talk about their getting the big plays, and
- 21:42then they can't quite capitalizing.
- 21:45Keep Minam going, they can't, but they're still driving the
- 21:49field. They're having to grind.
- 21:52Yep. Like sometimes last year, you
- 21:54watch a couple their games, it was like three, four plays
- 21:57touchdown and they kind of hit you.
- 22:00So they're doing it differently this year.
- 22:05And the question is, can they keep that up?
- 22:08Can they keep that up as they start?
- 22:10And I'll go ahead and say it, taking a step up in competition.
- 22:14Yeah, and I think we, I think, We find an answer this weekend
- 22:17on that. All right, Brian, let's jump to
- 22:19the defense and I'm going to just say it straight up.
- 22:22I cannot sugarcoat this. As I take my glasses off and
- 22:25hold them, I can't sugarcoat as of this very moment, North
- 22:30Carolina leads the nation. In rushing, the what?
- 22:35Yeah, they are giving up 54 yards per game at about two
- 22:40yards per rush, so that's pretty, that's craziness.
- 22:45No. Touchdowns averaging eight and a
- 22:48half tackles for loss, which is good for 16th about four and a
- 22:53half for the loss of those tackles, you know.
- 22:58And so it's a solid amount. I know I comparatively gets
- 23:01Virginia Tech. We're, we're about six per game
- 23:05at about four point eight. So sounds like what they're
- 23:08doing is able to penetrate the run.
- 23:10Now, Brian is you start looking on tape and you start breaking
- 23:13down this defense? What's making them, why so much
- 23:18success? So far?
- 23:19You feel especially against the run.
- 23:24So the thing I do really well, is they flow well to the
- 23:27football, whether it's in the passing game, or in the running
- 23:30game, they get to the football, they generally make good
- 23:34tackles, so they're pretty sound on that part.
- 23:38They, their base defense is a 245 which we don't see very
- 23:43often. So, we're talking about Two down
- 23:45interior guys, to kind of hybrid Edge.
- 23:51I mean, they're kind of kind of defensive ends kind of edge
- 23:54rushers. They're very similar to what you
- 23:57would see in an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense,
- 24:01then you've got to inside backers and then you've got the
- 24:05kind of a nickel set in the secondary there, two corners,
- 24:09two, safeties, and then you got a nickel.
- 24:11So they use the nickel, and the, the strong safety.
- 24:15And a lot of different ways. A lot of times they'll bring
- 24:18that guy right up on the line of scrimmage almost as like an
- 24:22extra outside linebacker. You call it a hybrid bear I
- 24:27don't really like that. I mean it's still a 245 they
- 24:30just got a guy walked up you know there's been a lot of Buzz
- 24:35out there on the you know the hybrid bear.
- 24:37They were running against BC. It's not really that but they
- 24:41what they do I do well as though they mix up their blitzes and
- 24:44disguise their coverage as well, well, in that because they've
- 24:46got Really only two guys that are guaranteed to be going after
- 24:51the the passer on a passing down.
- 24:53So they do a good job of mixing in zone.
- 24:56Blitz has disguising. Coverages going with man
- 24:59sometimes across the board they even gave a look with with
- 25:04Hunter long from BC where they would occasionally have man
- 25:08responsibilities on him because he was kind of go to guy and
- 25:10then they would be Zone everywhere else.
- 25:14So they like to mix up their coverages pretty Well, but I
- 25:19mean, if I'm being honest, I like the rush defense but I
- 25:24don't like them as best Rush defense in the land.
- 25:30As I was writing my notes out, I made that because as I was
- 25:36looking at the statistics, I'm looking at a right that I'm
- 25:38like, that's really good. All right, so when you, when we
- 25:40see things like that, it's immediately.
- 25:42I've got to go to the, their opponents and their games,
- 25:45alright? And we'll start with Syracuse
- 25:47bra. Let's let's look let's look at
- 25:49these two teams they played. All right so Syracuse ran the
- 25:53ball. 35 times against North Carolina for only 68 yards.
- 25:57Now, 15 of those roaches were by Tommy DeVito, the quarterback.
- 26:03So right there, kind of tells you the running backs and I know
- 26:08to be do can scramble we've seen him but it's he's not Braxton.
- 26:12He's not some of these other running the quarterbacks where
- 26:15you fear for your life. If They get the ball in their
- 26:18hands. So then I said, well, let's go
- 26:20to pit puts another very good run defense.
- 26:25They ran the ball 34 times against it, for only 51 yards.
- 26:30So one less time, 17 left yards, DeVito ran at once again, 14
- 26:34times, then they finally had their Breakout game Prime.
- 26:40Georgia Tech the game that you prevented you from going
- 26:44undefeated a few weeks ago about 41 times.
- 26:50This week, Tommy DeVito only random ball four times.
- 26:53Now, see, you're notif. You they finally broke 100
- 26:57yards. 163, I do think less of the focus on the quarterback
- 27:02running. The ball was probably a big
- 27:03help, but even with that game Run, you know, less than four
- 27:08yards per carry for that so that they were 3.97, that's not good.
- 27:14We know our standard here. Let's look at BC real quick
- 27:17before you jump back in here because I know you've probably
- 27:19got some things you'd like to talk about.
- 27:21Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
- 27:23BC ran the ball 19 times for 20 yards, that's less than two of
- 27:26carry, BC around the ball 41 times against Judah, at 84
- 27:30yards. That's also less right at two
- 27:33yards a carry and then they ran the ball 27 times against Texas
- 27:40state for 87 yards. So their best effort all year
- 27:45against the juggernauts of Duke and text State as been for 3.2
- 27:50yards. LeBron Me.
- 27:54Okay, what you just said, perfectly sums it up.
- 27:57Good Rush defense. They're not number one of the
- 27:59lane. I just think they've gotten
- 28:01lucky and face just to absolutely wretched running
- 28:04offenses. What do you think?
- 28:07Yeah, I definitely think they're ranking is indicative of too
- 28:11bad, rushing, offenses, and not being the best in the land.
- 28:14Now, they do some good things to kind of confuse the offensive
- 28:18line with the, with their alignments and the way they
- 28:21bring the safety in the nickel. Kind of into the box to play the
- 28:25run. But as you said you know
- 28:28opponents like BC haven't rushed for 100 yards in a single game
- 28:31and Syracuse only just. So, even with these guys playing
- 28:37other teams, they're not doing well.
- 28:39You know, you and C being the better version of Duke is not
- 28:44necessarily something, I would beat my chest about after we put
- 28:47up three hundred yards against them.
- 28:50I tell you what. Actually scares me more Is kind
- 28:54of the way they Blitz, especially with serrat going on
- 28:57some of those, a bag blitzes or kind of, they move him or all
- 28:59around the formation. Really, but they'll, they'll
- 29:04throw him into a gap and he can, he can kind of bring the Ruckus
- 29:08a little bit. So they do delayed blitzes, and
- 29:13pretty much always bring pressure on third down, even if
- 29:16they end up kind of dropping some of the other guys and kind
- 29:19of a Zone Blitz, type type move there.
- 29:22And they bring pressure from all levels of the defense.
- 29:25I've seen linebackers coming. I've seen safeties, I've seen
- 29:29the nickel. I've seen even the corner, so
- 29:32they'll bring guys from everywhere and drop guys, pretty
- 29:36much, it'll drop anybody except for those those two down
- 29:38linemen. So it's interesting to watch,
- 29:41but on the back end, you know, they run a lot of mix of Zone
- 29:47and man and then like I said, their front gives them ability
- 29:51to Zone. And what's a lot so they can
- 29:53really mix up how they run their coverages.
- 29:56As I said earlier, they were running some guys, even on the
- 30:00inside specifically spotting a man, head upward and then ran
- 30:03Zone across the board everywhere else.
- 30:05So they'll mix things up on us and short yardage.
- 30:10They didn't, you know, I would think in a short yardage
- 30:12scenario that they can serve, they might, you know, bring on a
- 30:15nose and and run the nickel off, but they didn't do that.
- 30:19What they ended up doing is sliding one of those.
- 30:22The guy that was playing the one technique interior out to a
- 30:26three technique and then putting both of those inside linebackers
- 30:29in the a gap. Well, and then they would roll
- 30:32the strong safety into the box. I'm like the picture that like
- 30:37button. Essentially, if you were in like
- 30:39an inside Zone type play and your tackles neutralize, the two
- 30:44tackles on the outside, you're talking about are nasty interior
- 30:48getting up into 225 pound lineman.
- 30:52Or linebackers. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 30:55That's exactly what you're talking about, Buddy.
- 30:58They're essentially hoping that they're going to get enough
- 30:59penetration at the snap where it's going to disrupt things and
- 31:04kind of funnel everything outside and let the safety, and
- 31:07the nickel kind of clean things up, it works sometimes and
- 31:12sometimes it didn't work, but that but that's what they like
- 31:15to go through and short yardage. They did it consistently against
- 31:17BC and like third one, and fourth, and one sometimes,
- 31:20third, and two situations. So that'll be something to watch
- 31:24out for. And so they would, like I said,
- 31:27they were aligned the, the down guys into three techniques.
- 31:31And then, they would either run a five with the outside edge
- 31:35rusher. They would, they would line up
- 31:37in a five technique and if it was to the tight inside, it
- 31:39would be a six techniques, will be head up on the tight end.
- 31:43Oh, that's interesting things. We have to look for.
- 31:46If they do some of those things moving those interior, lineman
- 31:48further out and stuff like that. I want to wrap a couple Oil
- 31:52before we jump on to our next segment here on the rap, just a
- 31:55couple more stats with you Bryan, just so I want you again
- 31:58to get your feel, tell me what you think of these, all right,
- 32:02and a couple of my own personal thoughts.
- 32:04The first part down, there actually are pretty good at
- 32:06third down 36.1%, but for number 23, so far in the season.
- 32:11Now, third down conversions, guess who's the worst team of
- 32:16the country at third down conversions?
- 32:19Who yet Syracuse. So that definitely bumps that
- 32:24stat. When you played the worst team
- 32:25in the Country BC slightly worse than average at 42.
- 32:29So again, overall, it's one of those things we look at it.
- 32:33You look at 23 and say, that's good.
- 32:35You look at where their opponents are converting.
- 32:36It's like, okay, well, they've helped you.
- 32:41The other thing is this is the one that I think, if you tell
- 32:45me, we wind up with a plus number in this category, Feel
- 32:49good. A turnover margin is minus 3.
- 32:52They've only have one interception off your, we've
- 32:55already mentioned how threw three interceptions.
- 32:57They also had a fumble. So there, they won two games,
- 33:02not win the turnover battle. We know how that goes last week
- 33:06when you are the better of two teams, clearly, North Carolina,
- 33:09more Talent across the board than Syracuse or BC and it
- 33:14happened. Yep.
- 33:16But I'm going to go back to some mustard, a couple weeks.
- 33:19To go in this podcast. I watched a ton of that Syracuse
- 33:23game again was sloppy. It was ugly.
- 33:27Only reason they won that game is because they wore Syracuse
- 33:30down for the win a couple times. They bent but didn't break
- 33:34inside the Red Zone where they had a kick field goals versus
- 33:38Syracuse punching it in and then Syracuse goes for it on fourth
- 33:40down one time. You see, Syracuse out there in
- 33:45the numbers. They're putting up that
- 33:47shouldn't have been like that, that should have been similar to
- 33:50what we did to NC State. You put your foot on them.
- 33:53You smash them, you make them think about it the entire time a
- 33:56locker. They didn't do that in the been
- 33:58seeing, well, BC the week before.
- 34:01Had a walk off at Texas State. But field, gold Danny lost that
- 34:05one but its weak against you and see under a minute left or right
- 34:11at a minute left, they have it. That's potentially tie the game
- 34:14with a two-point conversion. Now they turn the ball over.
- 34:17That does not count as one of Carolina's, you know, turnovers
- 34:21game because it's an on-time down as bright educated me on
- 34:24about 5-10 minutes ago, they were that close to losing to be
- 34:30see who we know maybe by 20 with a +5 turnover.
- 34:38They hung on against Texas state.
- 34:40So when I sit here and look at it, it's like I feel like the
- 34:43number 18 in the country as numerous pundits have said, who
- 34:48they don't feel like the number 18, we country now they
- 34:52definitely feel like the number 18 of the country as you pointed
- 34:55out the they've got some some deficiencies that they're
- 34:58working through. I think they really have not
- 35:02Been able to do a good job with. Overcoming some of the mistakes
- 35:09that they're making. So, you know, they'll have a
- 35:12couple good, please make a Miss may have a negative play and all
- 35:16of a sudden they're putting or you have a cover turnover or,
- 35:19you know, whatever it may be, they're letting those negative
- 35:23plays really negatively impact, the amount of points that can
- 35:25put up on a team and on defense, you know, they're not forcing
- 35:30the issue with turnovers as you said.
- 35:33And until they start doing those two things, I think they're
- 35:36going to struggle and I think we got some really We good chances
- 35:39to take advantage of that on Saturday, man.
- 35:43Absolutely, man. Our Brown.
- 35:44Well, let's jump into it real quick here, because obviously,
- 35:48we've now late everybody, the format of what Carolina looks
- 35:51like your analysis, the statistics and let's go through
- 35:56the three, pivotal players on each side of the ball for the
- 35:59Hokies and Brian when we got together to earlier this week, I
- 36:04was discussing this one. I me and you did not flinch.
- 36:09Who's the most important group this week for the Hokies
- 36:13quarterback? It's not a question.
- 36:18Regardless of the start, whether it be Braxton burn mics, or as
- 36:22coach Fuente said, don't take talk, live on Tuesday.
- 36:25Hendon is full go because this is my opinion.
- 36:31We balance Carolina has enough Talent If I think they're
- 36:37rushing numbers are overinflated but I don't think we're going to
- 36:40hit 300 against. No I think we're going to hit
- 36:43300 against them and I think what they're going to do is kind
- 36:46of keep some of those loaded boxes with those strong safeties
- 36:49and Nichols walked into the box at the edge kind of pressing
- 36:52things inside and essentially forcing us to run between the
- 36:57tackles and throw the ball to get first downs.
- 37:01So I think that's what they're going to try to do and we're
- 37:04going to need a quarterback that can make some of those
- 37:06intermediate. Rose.
- 37:07And that's not what we've been seeing in the first two games.
- 37:09We've seen mostly down the field success, and a little bit in the
- 37:15short passing game with some of the screens, but we haven't seen
- 37:18a whole lot of intermediate game and until that picks up until we
- 37:22put some pressure on those guys, you know, between the 10 and 20
- 37:26yard down the field range, I think, you know, we might have a
- 37:30long day if we can't do that. So hopefully, you know, my hope
- 37:34is that him and hookers ready to go ready to play.
- 37:36Say he's the man because I feel a whole lot more comfortable
- 37:41with the intermediate passing game with them, pulling the
- 37:43trigger. Yeah, me too.
- 37:45Yeah. And that's why we put it on
- 37:47because I do feel that and then if he, then he's going to be
- 37:50able to call them. If they come 67 on the line load
- 37:53in the Box, take away the run. You looking at some short passes
- 37:56and stuff like that. To really open it up, Brian.
- 37:59I gotta give this one away earlier, but I, but we still got
- 38:02to talk about it. If you want to put two
- 38:06undersized linebackers on the a gaps against letís move on
- 38:13Kaufman and either Doug mr. O'Brien Hudson you go, right
- 38:18ahead. We've discussed it.
- 38:19Brian, we feel the interior part of our offensive line is very
- 38:23important in this game. And yeah, we believe that pop,
- 38:27they that that interior line in kind of open some of that the
- 38:30creases there for the inside Zone.
- 38:32I think we're gonna have a lot of success.
- 38:35The way they kind of move around Sarat in the way they kind of
- 38:38mix up their line calls. I think they're going to try to
- 38:43try to press the middle and then and then funnel it outside.
- 38:45But if we can get some a crease in the middle there and can
- 38:49consistently get four to five yards on those inside Zone
- 38:54carries, even if we're not busting the big one, like we
- 38:56have the last few games, you know, I like our chances and I
- 38:59like some of the things we've been doing with the The with the
- 39:04Zone calls the outside Zona particular.
- 39:06We've rented a lot to the weak side but I can see us running it
- 39:08to the strong side. A lot more in this game just
- 39:11because of the alignments that they have because they tend to
- 39:14put that extra band towards the weak side.
- 39:17So if we run strong, we might have some some numbers there.
- 39:20So if we're going to go outside Zone, that's probably what we
- 39:23would end up doing. Let me ask this to Braun.
- 39:26Have how good is it? Make you feel as a Virginia Tech
- 39:29fan, knowing Brock's the center and feeling?
- 39:32He, you can see from how he plays a plays with the nasty
- 39:35streak. Yeah, but he's also a very Petty
- 39:37player multiple year starter Essentially he got all last year
- 39:43just to study tape on people to make the calls especially when
- 39:46they're moving this line up and down.
- 39:49Yeah, that definitely makes me feel good.
- 39:50I mean he's going to be the guy, making the primary calls will be
- 39:53listening for the checks and then adjusting to those, you
- 39:57know, whatever alerts he's getting from the tackles or the
- 39:59guards. So I'm really looking forward to
- 40:01seeing what kind of adjustments. He makes is they kind of change
- 40:04things up and bring different levels of pressure and different
- 40:07different alignments of that defense.
- 40:08So I think we have an opportunity.
- 40:10Take some Advantage there. Especially as the game wears on
- 40:13like we've seen, you know, both against NC State and against it
- 40:17gets do Glade, just putting them away.
- 40:21Third pivotal player, for the Hokies, we feel this week and
- 40:24Brian's kind of already highlighted it with some of the
- 40:27stuff Carolina does bringing guys up.
- 40:30And you said it, a few minutes ago, we discussed the
- 40:32quarterback, intermediate routes, Trey Turner.
- 40:35Yep, me and you kind of put it out there if Trey can get 52.
- 40:40I'm touches on this game the way they play trick.
- 40:43Never big day. What should be some of the
- 40:46routes? We look for that.
- 40:48If we're if we're popping early to Trey it's gonna be a long day
- 40:51for them. I think you might see like a
- 40:54couple like quick kind of double moves to get him a little bit of
- 40:58space behind the corners. Hit him like 15 yards downfield
- 41:03on those you're probably going to see some Slants maybe a dig
- 41:07but I think we're going to need really need to take advantage of
- 41:10Those spots on the field because within bring the Zone Blitz has,
- 41:14it's going to take them a while to sometimes get to where they
- 41:16need to be in the zone. So if we can kind of get one of
- 41:19those Blitz Peter routes in there, you know, we'll have a
- 41:22little bit of space to do some damage.
- 41:25Absolutely Brian. Absolutely.
- 41:27And, you know, we kind of sit here and trade, you know, he's
- 41:31had a couple good games I think what like 60 and 50 hasn't had
- 41:35as many touches as you know, we've seen.
- 41:40But We kind of go up and we start looking and I kind of go
- 41:44back to last year's game Run. And you know, we sit here, you
- 41:49know, the 4143 game. And you know, Trey Turner that
- 41:54day had five receptions for 106 yards and one carry it seven.
- 42:02If he has that time of day, again, I think you talked about
- 42:05the blood theaters. The double moves, he's gotten
- 42:09behind that zone. I also Think if that happens and
- 42:12there's probably playing, I don't have the breakdown of this
- 42:15game, but if we can remember henin, was there almost to the
- 42:19end of the first half and then Ryan Willis came in.
- 42:22Didn't Quincy came in so, but it kind of shows you.
- 42:26He can do it against this defense.
- 42:29Yeah, that one big touchdown sideline.
- 42:33The it was the fake little tunnel, they don't know, he kind
- 42:37of sold the block and then relief right up and night.
- 42:40They just, they just look down at a Beyond and like him and
- 42:44just on the money train. Never stop running my touchdown
- 42:48this like oh, we have to remember to defend people here.
- 42:52Yeah, it was over there. Let's talk about if humans ago.
- 42:57I think from a play-calling standpoint, we've definitely
- 43:00held a lot back. Oh yes.
- 43:03Most people you talked about especially in the passing game,
- 43:07I think we've had a lot back in the passing game.
- 43:10I think We've gotten may be as creative as we're going to get
- 43:13in the running game, but I think there's a lot in the passing
- 43:15game that we haven't shown yet this year.
- 43:18And I think you're going to probably see some of that get
- 43:20broken out this weekend. Yeah, I'm going to disagree with
- 43:23you on one piece of that. I don't think we've gotten this
- 43:25created, we can with the running game because without that
- 43:28passing threat, because without this is my opinion.
- 43:32You tell me if I'm right or wrong without the passing
- 43:34threat, essentially those guys can come right down hill.
- 43:38You played that position and when you Doing some creative
- 43:41things running. If you can hold that linebacker
- 43:43for a tenth, six yards off the line versus three yards off line
- 43:47and it's a run play, somebody like you as an interior guard
- 43:51knows. He's way off the line, I'm going
- 43:53to get momentum and I'ma put him on his ass verses were closed.
- 43:58I just need to get him engaged. I'll say this.
- 44:01The reason I said, I think we've gotten creative in the running
- 44:04game. Is that at no point last year?
- 44:07Did I see us in 21 personnel He'll run a fake outside Zone.
- 44:15Quarterback counter for a touchdown.
- 44:18Touche, Brian, let's flip it to the other side of the ball, you
- 44:24know. Obviously we talked a ton about
- 44:26the passing attacked of North Carolina and let's just be
- 44:31straight up. The Divine Diablo.
- 44:34Is he back? Is he not playing?
- 44:36Because I think he's our, no, he's definitely in there number
- 44:38one. Yeah, if Diablos.
- 44:40Back. I feel a whole lot better.
- 44:41I don't feel bad if he's not but I feel a whole lot better if he
- 44:46is. I think we'll be fine without
- 44:50him. I think we'll Feast if he's in
- 44:52the game because I just love he just has a nose for the football
- 44:57man. Even if he's not making the
- 44:59interception or getting the fumble, I mean he's a guy that
- 45:02just always finds a way to be around the play in the
- 45:04secondary. So I really hope that he's in
- 45:07because I think he'll make a lot of plays for us.
- 45:10Absolutely. And plus his leadership back
- 45:12there, getting guys along getting guys in the right
- 45:14position. It's big.
- 45:16It was done very well. Last week by the makeshift
- 45:19group, we had in the back end, but I think having him back
- 45:22there will be big. Now if he's not back there, tell
- 45:25me, who's on the outside? What will scare me is if the
- 45:30same names are on that damn list at a.
- 45:33Well, right before I go to a baseball game against North
- 45:38Carolina, Will be a little pit in my stomach because we need
- 45:44some of the secondary. The upper echelon.
- 45:46Secondary guys back. Yeah, I'd like to at least see.
- 45:50Hopefully Waller is is kind of feeling better and you can play
- 45:53and I hope that, you know, we got, we got Chapman back this
- 45:57week. If we can get at least those two
- 45:59guys back on the field. This week, I would feel a whole
- 46:01lot better about the secondary. Like I said, I think Devon
- 46:06Diablo is going to be the key but without those other two
- 46:09pieces, especially Without Divine back there.
- 46:11That would make it a really big big tall order for us to hold
- 46:16that. There's an offensive weapons and
- 46:18check. Absolutely.
- 46:21And Brian you stood on the table with these three guys when we
- 46:25when we talked a couple days ago as we were putting this
- 46:27together, but why do you feel our interior defensive lineman
- 46:30especially Hewitt Deshawn Crawford, who looks like he is
- 46:33coming back and Pollard is three name.
- 46:36Why do you feel against this offense?
- 46:38They are so critical. Because I think you want to put
- 46:42pressure in the face of Sam, how consistently, okay, so if we're
- 46:46getting good press on those passing Downs, able to make him,
- 46:50you know get antsy feedback there, or make a throw when he's
- 46:54not ready or potentially, you know, just be a stone back there
- 46:58and staying there while he's facing the rush.
- 47:00And then throw it kind of at the last second and make a mistake.
- 47:04So that those guys are going to be big, you know, Crawford
- 47:08Pollard, Hewitt. I mean really need big games
- 47:12from them. Beginning, you know, if we get
- 47:15food in there, I want to see him, you know, pressing that
- 47:17pocket, making some plays, but they also got to be able to
- 47:20tackle man because Carter will, like I said, make a guy Miss get
- 47:24to the second level and he can be dangerous.
- 47:26So when we get our hands on the running back, they definitely
- 47:29need to make those plays. Absolutely.
- 47:32You know, and we've mentioned the outside, guys, but I think
- 47:34to your point Brown we saw last week, With in probably why we
- 47:39didn't put Justice or Belmar on here this week.
- 47:42They know they're there, they know they're there.
- 47:45They're going to be sending things to those guys now.
- 47:48Can they probably beat double? Yes.
- 47:50But I think it's I think now I understand why you put those
- 47:54guys because if they're getting the extra pressure then
- 47:57offensively it's like if we're getting pressure up the gut it's
- 48:01even worse because he has no pocket to step into and you talk
- 48:04about him being able to make resetting his feet.
- 48:07Making good throws as we see and we're watching.
- 48:10Tom. Brady here, you know, one of the
- 48:14all-time greats, don't throw things at me, don't drive over
- 48:18here and beat my butt up tonight, man.
- 48:23Entire career, you get the interior pressure he just
- 48:26becomes a shell of a quarterback.
- 48:30He's still a good quarterback but he is no longer a great
- 48:32quarterback. Alright.
- 48:34Now the last guy is the one that I stood on the table.
- 48:37Before. And let's hope he's back this
- 48:39week, but I think Alan Tisdale with that range in the way he
- 48:42covers taken out Flats. We mentioned Michael quarter
- 48:46check Downs, Alan Tisdale can take that away.
- 48:49Yep, that's going to be his primary role in the past games,
- 48:52taking away those running backs, whether it's Williams or whether
- 48:56it's Carter, he's going to be probably responsible for
- 49:00handling those guys in coverage, and he's going to be responsible
- 49:04for. Making some players that get
- 49:07kind of washed outside in the running game.
- 49:09So if we get Carter outside he needs to come up.
- 49:12Make that tackle man because again I'm going to stress it
- 49:15over and over tackling is going to be the key to holding this
- 49:19team. Similar to what BC did and what
- 49:22Syracuse did. And I think that if we can keep
- 49:24them under that 30-point range or right in that ballpark, I
- 49:28think we're going to be looking pretty good.
- 49:30All right. Hey well Brian, they released it
- 49:33today. Let's get our quick opinions.
- 49:35What do you think of the white white orange Unis?
- 49:39Hear what people say? You know, blah blah blah, orange
- 49:44is bad. We haven't played well in
- 49:45Orange, whatever I know. Virginia Tech is a lot like
- 49:49Michael Scott. They're not superstitious, but
- 49:51they are a little stitches. I'm not so much.
- 49:56I like the orange. I think it's a good look.
- 49:57I like it better with the white than I did with the maroon.
- 50:00Yes. Very Sleek with the white.
- 50:02Yeah, so I'm cool with the combo.
- 50:06I'll let the peanut gallery complain on their own.
- 50:09I think the helmet. I think the very traditional
- 50:13white helmet helps out. Not trying to flash it out, just
- 50:17as white, stripe, your traditional VT, the VT squared
- 50:21logo there. I think that helps it, but it
- 50:24isn't. It is a very flashy, very Sleek.
- 50:26Look, so kudos to that team. Ron.
- 50:29Who got the 20? Of juice.
- 50:33I am shot. No,
- 50:47I'm looking forward to seeing what he does because he's shown,
- 50:49he can do a damn good job in 21. You're absolutely right.
- 50:54And, you know, after the way he looked last week and it's
- 50:56clearly one of those things where he's not going to be back
- 50:59there every time. I'm to get kick returns but he
- 51:02knows when he gets out there, he's got a job and he two times
- 51:06last week. Absolutely flipped the field
- 51:10started a drives off super hot. So congrats juice on a 25.
- 51:16All right. Well we come Brian.
- 51:18It's time for a prediction I'll lead I made you lead last
- 51:23week's. Okay, go for it buddy, what you
- 51:25got? Well, first of all, I texted you
- 51:27earlier this week, I don't know if you remember a couple God
- 51:30Days ago, and I just said, I'm not feeling good about this
- 51:33game. First of all, it was when I just
- 51:36did the initial looking at the rushing stuff from from North
- 51:43Carolina side and knowing that they have a good offense and
- 51:46knowing they've been a little bit Rusty.
- 51:48So I was kind of kind of, you know, thinking and if QB 1s not
- 51:55back and it, this is going to be tough.
- 51:58We're going to have to play really good.
- 52:00Really fundamental football. No, turnovers.
- 52:02We cannot have three. Turnovers.
- 52:05But then I dug deeper and you find out some things and I
- 52:10think. If either quarterback plays, I
- 52:16think we can win this game. I think quarterback one, please,
- 52:20I think in two places week, I think getting them back in
- 52:23shape. Last week, he probably was the
- 52:25third emergency quarterback. Probably did not get as many
- 52:28reps but just looking at this Carolina team.
- 52:32The paper tiger gets crushed this week of all these wonderful
- 52:36numbers. Okay. 8:28 Hokies Okay, so 3828
- 52:45I like it. I'm writing the same ballpark.
- 52:49Actually, I'm going to go. I think you be one plays, I
- 52:55think we do good enough on defense and I think our offense
- 52:59returns to a balanced nature but still run heavy or I'd say run
- 53:06favored. It's called run favored and I
- 53:11think we're able to take Take more advantage of the
- 53:14intermediate passing game within and hooker, in the game that's
- 53:17going to allow us to sustain more drives and not have to
- 53:20essentially run the ball down the field in order to sustain
- 53:23something to drive. So I'm going to go 3831 a little
- 53:32tighter for you. Yep, and the line right now for
- 53:36the game, just for our bedding audience out there.
- 53:39Because I know some of the folks that listen, I'm sure
- 53:40degenerates. Just, that's just the way it is.
- 53:43That line moved in the last hour behind.
- 53:46Yeah, it's seven and a half as of 11:00 Eastern Standard time
- 53:50tonight. It is at four and a half.
- 53:52So the monkey continuously comes in on the Hokies for this game.
- 53:58Be interested to see where it is by game time Saturday which
- 54:03Braun, you have to watch a lot of that first half.
- 54:07I will be coaching my sons had a conversation with the head man.
- 54:12Today, like you put it on right there in this game like for
- 54:14real. He's just kind of smile and it's
- 54:16like come on man. You're killing me here, move it
- 54:19move it around my schedule. All right, let's let's flip it
- 54:36here. So, go ahead and put this in a
- 54:39bronze number in here, so we can keep it.
- 54:41All right. Brian, dude.
- 54:44Back-to-back week, you are crushing people are playing
- 54:47bronze pics. You have a lot of money in your
- 54:51pocket, six in one last week. Unfortunately, in my first
- 54:57losing week at 3:00 and For we are both still over 500, Brian,
- 55:02now though is 16 and 8. So, you know, 65% winter.
- 55:11Unfortunately, I'm not doing that good at 13 and 11.
- 55:18You have been on my games at still.
- 55:19You want a little money but not as much as mr.
- 55:21Siegel here. But we're going to pick the ACC
- 55:25games with a couple out of conferences, against the spread.
- 55:29And unless these lines here things significantly in the last
- 55:32little while here, I think we're all good.
- 55:36So let's fire it up. Run, let's start tomorrow night.
- 55:39Probably again, I will not be watching.
- 55:41Maybe you will, maybe you won't. But Georgia Tech.
- 55:44Louisville Louisville is the road favorite Layman
- 55:50four-and-a-half. What's your feeling on this?
- 55:52This one. Alright.
- 55:54GT's fuck to be twice at Louisville.
- 55:58Only a prince. Four and a half points.
- 56:29Alright, alright. So Saturday at noon along with
- 56:32the Hokies kicking off here in the Commonwealth NC State
- 56:36Virginia UVA is laying seven and a half points.
- 56:44Coming off the loss. In steady state with the big win
- 56:46at Pitt, Brian. I'm gonna take this one and, um,
- 56:53I'm gonna, you know, I picked against them last week and it
- 56:56burned me because personally when you see the white corner
- 57:00back on the field, in the middle part of the third quarter of
- 57:03teams, essentially saying you're not going to beat us, we will
- 57:06play our backups and our third stringers in our Walk-Ons.
- 57:10But I think NC State's going to carry some momentum in.
- 57:13I think Larry is the better of the two quarterbacks.
- 57:16We didn't have to see him because, you know, the other guy
- 57:20had a very good game. So give me a nice day.
- 57:23Say, give me seven in the hook. Okay, not so fast.
- 57:28Okay. Not so fast.
- 57:30My friend. Are you dumb about it?
- 57:36I'm trying to decide. I was.
- 57:37I'm right on the cusp here because I think I think it's
- 57:42going to be potentially a Down to the wire game.
- 57:48I think you're right about leery, being the better of the
- 57:50two. I think he gives them a little
- 57:51bit more balanced, even if he's not necessarily slinging the
- 57:54ball around. Like some of the other
- 57:59quarterbacks in the ACC, but I've seen enough consistency
- 58:05with UVA where I'm kind of leaning in their Direction.
- 58:12I'll take NC State the last time they were a road
- 58:40favorite. You ready to go back to this
- 58:42Harmon, let's do it 1996. So we were both in Middle
- 58:47School. Wow.
- 58:51They were, they were owing, like, five against way.
- 58:54Coup is wanted for Jim Caldwell is a head coach of Wake Forest
- 58:59and they were like a two and a half Point favorite or three and
- 59:02a half Point favorites. O'Brien, who are you taking in
- 59:05this wonderful game against one in three verses?
- 59:08Oh, and for all right. So I've got a little more data
- 59:13on this one and probably really any of the others we looked at
- 59:17to this. So I'm going to keep going with
- 59:21with the idea that Georgia Tech sucks and I'm going to say Dukes
- 59:24going to cover. I'm with you on that.
- 59:28I think Duke is finally got their Bering Strait you know
- 59:33last week I think they played a very good game against us or
- 59:37some turnover like might have figured out what not to do.
- 59:41Do as far as turning the ball over I'm with you take Juke.
- 59:46They're going to get their first win outright so they're going to
- 59:49easily cover this. Alrighty, next up, Brian USBC
- 59:55pit up in Chestnut Hill. This one has got me back and
- 1:00:01forth because I don't think Kenny Pickett is a good
- 1:00:07quarterback, we've discussed that number But BC cannot run
- 1:00:12the damn ball whatsoever. It's oh my God.
- 1:00:18It's such a I can't do it. I think six is still too much
- 1:00:23for this. Wow he's got 13. 14 points for a
- 1:00:30few weeks on pit and looks like they lost their shirts.
- 1:00:33They're like screw this. Give it six.
- 1:00:36I don't think six is enough. I think, pittle win this game.
- 1:00:38I think this will be an ugly similar to the Carolina BC game
- 1:00:42somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 421.
- 1:00:45BC covers pit probably wins this game though.
- 1:00:51Yeah, I think pit wins. I think pit wins by 7.
- 1:01:00So I'm going to pick Pizza cover, it's going to cover, I
- 1:01:07hate to do it, you hate to do it, but at the same time, I said
- 1:01:14it before I said I don't think it's going to beat any team by
- 1:01:16two touchdowns. I think they can beat a team by
- 1:01:19one touchdown. I just hope you don't get
- 1:01:23screwed. I don't know if you like the bad
- 1:01:28beat of the we yeah. You see the segment?
- 1:01:32Yeah they made a bet on it and cutcliffe last second fuel gold
- 1:01:43for really no reason. Yeah, cut it.
- 1:01:46Cut have some some skin in that one.
- 1:01:48I think. Would you get one and a half
- 1:01:53kick the field goal? What do you think, Brian?
- 1:02:30That is a lot of points to lay. That's a lot of points to lay.
- 1:02:39If we weren't, if they weren't starting a new quarterback, I
- 1:02:41would probably take Notre Dame. But with the new quarterback, I
- 1:02:45think there's enough potential there where you might see a
- 1:02:49little bit more life in the in the Seminoles this week.
- 1:02:53So I'm going to take FS you in the points.
- 1:02:56Yeah, I'm with you, the new quarterback getting Norville
- 1:02:59back. I think Kevin she's going to
- 1:03:02cover. I don't I don't think fsu's
- 1:03:04going to become. I'm not going to say
- 1:03:06competitive, they're probably going to That defense has the
- 1:03:09defensive line is good. The rest of the defense looks
- 1:03:11terrible but I think they do put some points up with the new
- 1:03:15quarterback there. So give me that.
- 1:03:17Give me the 21. They probably lose somewhere
- 1:03:19between 17 and 20, so it might be a sweat late night, but it is
- 1:03:26what it is. All right?
- 1:03:28Brian, Let's go to the Texas state fair.
- 1:03:33Oh yeah. The river.
- 1:03:35Shootout. And it is not the Red River
- 1:03:39rivalry to anyone who grew up before like 2010.
- 1:03:46It is the Red River, shootout. It is at the Texas state fair.
- 1:03:49It is in the Cotton Bowl and Brian is I'm sitting here today
- 1:03:54and I see that this line is Oklahoma Land, two and a half.
- 1:03:59Okay, what you got? This is like a legal limit bet
- 1:04:04because Texas is a tro chaisson defense.
- 1:04:08Oklahoma is bad. They're not atrocious, Texas is
- 1:04:11giving up damn near 50 points. A game and their back end is
- 1:04:17just it's awful. There's there's talented kids
- 1:04:20there metric wise, but they didn't Tommy Herman.
- 1:04:25They don't know how to coach them.
- 1:04:27So I think Oklahoma's not only going to win I think I'll go
- 1:04:32home is gonna blow their doors off, okay?
- 1:04:36I don't know what the over-under is but my assumption is take the
- 1:04:40over. Yes, let's see here.
- 1:04:43Were the over is 73. So go take guys, still here
- 1:04:48where the over? I think it was 70 earlier in the
- 1:04:51week and people were just behind like it's going to be it's going
- 1:04:54to be 40 something to at least upper 30 something is in my bet.
- 1:04:58So I think you're good taking the over.
- 1:05:01Were there, I'm actually with you.
- 1:05:03I think this is Rattler Revenge here.
- 1:05:07I think we're going to see a much more polished game from
- 1:05:10him. And then we saw last week and I
- 1:05:13think they're going to just be able to light it up against that
- 1:05:17bad, Texas defense, man. So we are agreeing that
- 1:05:22Oklahoma, it's going to blow the doors off.
- 1:05:26All right, this is a line that's went down in the last couple
- 1:05:32days down between the hedges. I do believe on Saturday
- 1:05:38afternoon on a sec. I'll see vs Tennessee, Georgia,
- 1:05:45Georgia, laying 12 and a half. Both coming off wins.
- 1:05:52Georgia. You know, basically Python and
- 1:05:55Auburn and what looked like a, no offense and Tennessee,
- 1:05:59putting pretty big beat down on Mizzou last week 35:12.
- 1:06:04So Brian, what are you feeling for this game?
- 1:06:09Other look like a completely different team with the new
- 1:06:13trigger, man. Captain Bennett the third.
- 1:06:17Yeah, so I'm going to give me other to cover.
- 1:06:23Whoo. That is a ton of points to lay
- 1:06:29some fuck Tennessee. All right, well this
- 1:06:52is not the yard and try to do some crazy stuff.
- 1:07:00I think he's going to keep it very basic for Guantanamo.
- 1:07:03I think Jordan are going to win but I think through it.
- 1:07:06And his goal is going to be we're going to make this an
- 1:07:09old-school SEC game playing the 21.
- 1:07:13And I think that Tennessee is going to get enough points
- 1:07:18probably not pretty to cover. I think, Georgia wins.
- 1:07:23I think, Tennessee covers. I think this is going to be
- 1:07:26somewhere like a 2014 2013 game. It's going to be ugly.
- 1:07:34It's one of those 330s that you have to love college.
- 1:07:38You have to love football to enjoy because it's going to be
- 1:07:41some good defensive playing. And I mean, me and you, we love
- 1:07:44football. So some people would say, how
- 1:07:46are you watching a game that is like 13-6 and it's like watch
- 1:07:51the defense watch these defenses.
- 1:07:54Eat these offensive alive it. That's how and sometimes.
- 1:07:59You can say this. Those are some of the most
- 1:08:02entertaining games is just those absolute Rock fights where it's
- 1:08:06just like, people are getting hit hard.
- 1:08:10Every play in. It's awesome to see that.
- 1:08:16All right, Brian. I like it last game of the week.
- 1:08:22I will leave this one. Miami Clemson, Clemson Lane 14.
- 1:08:28Now people are gonna Say something.
- 1:08:31The big dog in the ACC Miami's on the comic, but it's
- 1:08:34absolutely true. Have you seen Clemson players if
- 1:08:37they're like, calling the dogs off and they're, you know,
- 1:08:41they're not, they're not playing as well.
- 1:08:44They turn, they're not going to turn it off this week because
- 1:08:47anytime Clemson gets a team in front of them that they feel
- 1:08:51could threaten them. That is when they turn the
- 1:08:56afterburners on and just blow I think it'll be a competitive
- 1:09:00game, but I do think Clemson will pull away late and late
- 1:09:05enough to cover that 14. I think this game is going to be
- 1:09:09somewhere in the neighborhood of like 4528 with Clemson score on
- 1:09:13a couple late touchdowns to get that cover often.
- 1:09:16As they start making the tackles more and more and Clemson can't
- 1:09:22burn me two weeks in a row, right, even though against the
- 1:09:25spread their terrible, but I feel like I should go try to
- 1:09:28find like, UVA was ranked going to the ACC Championship Game?
- 1:09:32The lamb was minus 30. That's a lot of points when
- 1:09:36someone's like all your ranked, uh, we squish, you know, I think
- 1:09:43it's going to be a similar type description of the game as you
- 1:09:46just described there, but I think they're not going to quite
- 1:09:49cover that 14. I think it's going to be like a
- 1:09:5110 to 12 point spread in there. So I'll take Miami in the
- 1:09:56points. But I still think it's not going
- 1:09:58to be a down-to-the-wire situation.
- 1:10:01I think it's going to be a arm's length at the end situation.
- 1:10:07One thing has changed in Collegiate football, since we've
- 1:10:12got on here Alabama Old Miss, which, I believe was supposed to
- 1:10:16be an early kick on Saturday. Has been actually moved Brian.
- 1:10:23That game is now going to be a 730 kick.
- 1:10:28I believe was supposed to be a high noon kick.
- 1:10:30So you know clearly with the hurricane coming through, the
- 1:10:34Missouri LSU game was already postponed.
- 1:10:37There is one big change but what you smoking this weekend for
- 1:10:41these games. You know what, buddy?
- 1:10:44Originally I was planning a trip to my mom's but that's actually
- 1:10:47kind of been backed off. So I'm going to go with some
- 1:10:51queso I got a couple packs of chorizo in the in the freezer
- 1:10:56there and make some up with some cheese.
- 1:10:59Let's let's get it smoking and will be dipping away.
- 1:11:03Unfortunately didn't have any anything else planned.
- 1:11:06So I'm I might end up picking up something at the store, but
- 1:11:09that's all I got on the docket right now.
- 1:11:11Very nice. You should go to the store.
- 1:11:13Find you some nice brisket and make you some typos.
- 1:11:17Go along with that. Yummy case.
- 1:11:18Oh man. Yeah sure.
- 1:11:19That sounds delicious dude. Alright.
- 1:11:22Anything else? Breaking run that you see?
- 1:11:27You look at the bottom line of these games and another right
- 1:11:33now, this this Bears bucks is coming down to the wire.
- 1:11:37Dude 1917, I'd love a touchdown to Allen Robinson right now to
- 1:11:42finish this game off. I don't know if I'm going to get
- 1:11:45it all though, he's got a very nice, he's down.
- 1:11:49I don't know what the issue is, okay, oops, got distracted by
- 1:11:53the game. There folks live podcasting is
