Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: What Does Michael Carter Trade Mean For Philadelphia Eagles Defense?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody's Jeff Mosher,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Adam Kaplan. That's right. The Eagles made a trade on Wednesday,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and we're gonna break it down. And man, I'll tell
- 0:23Speaker 1: you what Adam before we even get to it. The
- 0:25Speaker 1: Eagles have made a lot of trades this year. Not
- 0:27Speaker 1: one of a single one has been a blockbuster, but
- 0:29Speaker 1: they have made a bunch of trades going back to
- 0:32Speaker 1: the off season. Obviously this one, they acquire cornerback from
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Jets, Michael Carter.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Not a corner, it's a nickel. A Well, remember what Fixcess's.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Talk about that? Yeah, yet, right, I think we know
- 0:49Speaker 1: defensive back. I'll call it. It's about Michael Carter.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And in turn, they give up Johnny Metchie. We hardly
- 0:56Speaker 1: knew you had the wide receiver that they brought in
- 0:58Speaker 1: via a different trade and a seventh round pick. They
- 1:01Speaker 1: have two, so it'll probably it'll be the better one
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the seventh round picks, and away we go. So
- 1:07Speaker 1: there's a couple of ways to look at this, right.
- 1:09Speaker 1: You could sort of be skeptical and look at it
- 1:11Speaker 1: and say, man, it's just adding some depth at at
- 1:14Speaker 1: a versatile position inside or outside, or you could think
- 1:18Speaker 1: that there's a wheel in motion here for the Eagles
- 1:22Speaker 1: to want to play Michael Carter at the slot if
- 1:24Speaker 1: he's you know, where he's played before and if he's
- 1:27Speaker 1: going to excel there, and then potentially move Cooper to
- 1:29Speaker 1: Gene outside for this season. I wouldn't go beyond I
- 1:35Speaker 1: think we're in agreement on that, but just for really
- 1:37Speaker 1: the best temporary fix for their secondary this season could
- 1:41Speaker 1: be that.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so Degane has always been there in house fail safe,
- 1:46Speaker 3: like if all does not work out, if you really
- 1:49Speaker 3: want to win a super Bowl and you're not making
- 1:52Speaker 3: a trade for a corner, this is the move because
- 1:55Speaker 3: you're not winning a super Bowl with Ringo or Jeory Jackson.
- 1:59Speaker 3: A's your starting corner. I'm not criticizing them, just being honest.
- 2:02Speaker 3: That's the way the league sees it. They see them
- 2:04Speaker 3: as backups. At this point, nothing has happened that surprised us,
- 2:07Speaker 3: other than the fact that Ringo hasn't being crushed over
- 2:11Speaker 3: the top, which is surprising. But in terms of performance,
- 2:15Speaker 3: ringoes on a starting corner. I mean, no one who
- 2:17Speaker 3: knows football is arguing with that. He's trying his hardest,
- 2:21Speaker 3: he's done the best he can. If you're trying to
- 2:23Speaker 3: win a Super Bowl, you're gonna have to look elsewhere
- 2:25Speaker 3: and looking inward as you mentioned, and suggests that it's
- 2:28Speaker 3: very possible that Degene is going to be a corner
- 2:31Speaker 3: and move from nickel.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Now. Vic loves Coop as a nickel.
- 2:34Speaker 3: He's dynamic, he's athletic, great slot corner, slot dB excuse me,
- 2:40Speaker 3: playing inside, covering a tight end, covering a running back, blitzing,
- 2:44Speaker 3: covering a receiver, whatever youone do. He's a jack of
- 2:46Speaker 3: all trades. But remember he was a corner at Iowa.
- 2:51Speaker 3: But you had mentioned something to me. I totally forgot
- 2:53Speaker 3: about Vic. I guess was explain to people. What was
- 2:57Speaker 3: Vic asked about Cooper potentially playing corner or for the future.
- 3:01Speaker 2: What would it take.
- 3:02Speaker 1: He was just recently asked. I mean, he'd been asked
- 3:05Speaker 1: it before and it said the same thing, but he
- 3:07Speaker 1: was recently asked about it. And first thing he said,
- 3:10Speaker 1: he was asked about Cooper in the slot. Obviously, everybody's
- 3:12Speaker 1: asking him these questions because the trade deadline is near
- 3:15Speaker 1: and this is the first last time you're going to
- 3:16Speaker 1: get to talk to him. And he reiterated that he
- 3:18Speaker 1: felt that Cooper, to Gene is too valuable as a
- 3:23Speaker 1: slot corner for what they do to simply have moved
- 3:26Speaker 1: him there and played somebody else, and that he's one
- 3:30Speaker 1: of the best athletes that they have, but he also
- 3:32Speaker 1: said they've considered it in the past and just found
- 3:35Speaker 1: that he's too valuable, And then in a follow up
- 3:38Speaker 1: question about considering it, he was asked, well, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: when you've considered it, what has been the alternative for
- 3:46Speaker 1: you that has just said he's too valuable to play
- 3:48Speaker 1: in the slot, and Vic said, we just haven't figured
- 3:50Speaker 1: found someone who could play the slot that we're I'm
- 3:54Speaker 1: paraphrasing that we're comfortable with moving Cooper to Jean outside.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And that makes sense because he really has not had
- 4:00Speaker 1: over the last two years someone who you would say
- 4:02Speaker 1: is even close or comparable to playing that position. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: this year alone, you know, Parry Nickerson is a nice player,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but I don't he's not been a starter in this
- 4:11Speaker 1: league on a good team, good defense, and he's played
- 4:14Speaker 1: there a little bit this year. Went right back to
- 4:17Speaker 1: the practice squad after the game, and Mac McWilliams is
- 4:20Speaker 1: a kid that they drafted and played at outside and inside,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but it still has not played a whole lot, if
- 4:26Speaker 1: at all, on the defense. So Michael Carter is probably
- 4:31Speaker 1: the closest thing they have to a player in this
- 4:34Speaker 1: league who has good experience in the slot and has
- 4:37Speaker 1: played well there. So it gives him the solution. The
- 4:41Speaker 1: question now becomes, Adam is it's a fact finding mission
- 4:47Speaker 1: now for Vic and the Eagles. Is Michael Carter once
- 4:51Speaker 1: they get back to practice on Thursday of next week
- 4:53Speaker 1: because they have a Monday night game, is he the solution?
- 4:57Speaker 1: I don't think he just automatically is the solution. Because
- 5:00Speaker 1: they've traded for him, They've got to figure out is
- 5:04Speaker 1: he the guy that can do this if they want
- 5:05Speaker 1: to move Cooper to Gene outside.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Well, I would just add this, they don't make a
- 5:08Speaker 3: trade with not knowing what they want to do. It's
- 5:10Speaker 3: on your point, is he ready to do it? If
- 5:13Speaker 3: he's ready, now he's doing it. That's why they made
- 5:14Speaker 3: the trade. You don't make a trade. You don't wake
- 5:16Speaker 3: up of the morning say you know what, let's just
- 5:17Speaker 3: make a trade for a guy that they have a
- 5:18Speaker 3: reason for it. Every trade has a reason. Now, let
- 5:22Speaker 3: me move this forward here. Mac mcwoe's clearly is not
- 5:25Speaker 3: ready despite having an intriguing training camp. It's they're giving
- 5:30Speaker 3: you the answers to the test when you make a
- 5:31Speaker 3: trade for a nickel like Michael Carter. And we're going
- 5:33Speaker 3: to get into what happened with him with the Jets's
- 5:35Speaker 3: there's more than meets the eye here in terms of
- 5:37Speaker 3: why they looking to move him.
- 5:38Speaker 2: There's always a reason why teams move him. But let's
- 5:40Speaker 2: stand on mckwimson.
- 5:41Speaker 3: We'll get over to Carter Macgwe's had a nice training camp,
- 5:44Speaker 3: but Vic clearly doesn't think he's ready, So he's.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Not the nickel.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Now, what I would add is everything you said could
- 5:51Speaker 3: happen or probably will happen, and I would say it's
- 5:54Speaker 3: highly probable except for one thing, unless how he makes
- 5:57Speaker 3: a trade for a true cornerback.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Two this Tuesday, a four P is a trade deadline.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yep.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Look, you never know what comes up. You never know.
- 6:08Speaker 3: What Because how he's good at understanding where teams are
- 6:10Speaker 3: in contract negotiations. He knew Garter Johnson in twenty two
- 6:14Speaker 3: was not getting his contract extended. He had a good
- 6:17Speaker 3: relationship with Mickey Loomis, called him, got him gott and
- 6:20Speaker 3: he helped him get to the super Bowl. Then they
- 6:22Speaker 3: won a super Bowl with him last year. Yes, you
- 6:24Speaker 3: never know, man, So how he's resourceful, his good sources,
- 6:27Speaker 3: he finds out what's going to happen, and he.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Checks as you were. That's how he got aj Brown.
- 6:33Speaker 3: He knew that that there might be a possibility John Robinson,
- 6:35Speaker 3: the GM told him first, no, no where. We're working
- 6:38Speaker 3: on an extension. But it broke down. And how he
- 6:41Speaker 3: got his man, so you never know. He could still
- 6:44Speaker 3: get it. He could still get a true corner. But
- 6:46Speaker 3: if he doesn't get a corner, it's extrapol like kind
- 6:49Speaker 3: of what we see, what we hear, what we know,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you could definitely see going forward if they think Carter's ready.
- 6:57Speaker 3: In fact, this is why they did it. You would
- 6:59Speaker 3: fai think realistically Carter will be their nickel at some point.
- 7:04Speaker 3: On your point, you make a good point that he
- 7:06Speaker 3: may not be. He's got to learn the defense. This
- 7:07Speaker 3: is not the same defense that he played in the
- 7:09Speaker 3: Jet Effect. He played in a couple different defenses. Remember
- 7:12Speaker 3: we played for Robert Salah and then uh then the
- 7:17Speaker 3: new regime at our Aaron Glenn comes in and they
- 7:20Speaker 3: run their scheme. So now he's got to learn vic scheme,
- 7:23Speaker 3: which is the mirror match. Mirror match. Although they're playing
- 7:26Speaker 3: a lot of man this year, they are not playing
- 7:28Speaker 3: you know, they're not playing as much of it.
- 7:30Speaker 2: But the bottom line is he's got to learn it
- 7:34Speaker 2: once Vic's comfortable, and that's the key man. He's he
- 7:38Speaker 2: makes the decisions.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I know he He's got Christian Parker as the dbast coach,
- 7:41Speaker 3: but they have to come to agreement when he's ready.
- 7:44Speaker 3: The most likely scenario is if Carter's ready, he's the
- 7:46Speaker 3: nickel and Kop moves outside. And now now now, now
- 7:50Speaker 3: you're looking at a different thing. Now you theoretically should
- 7:54Speaker 3: be way better. But we want to discuss why in
- 7:57Speaker 3: a minute, why Carter was traded.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He was very available. The word around the league was
- 8:01Speaker 2: they were trying to move him. They got next to nothing.
- 8:03Speaker 3: For him, and it's the reason is because you have
- 8:07Speaker 3: Joe Douglas who's with Eagles. He drafted him. Carter was
- 8:11Speaker 3: a good player for a while. Last year he started
- 8:14Speaker 3: getting his role cut. Isaiah Oliver, who's a nickel on
- 8:17Speaker 3: a corner, was drafted by the Falcons. He started covering,
- 8:20Speaker 3: cutting into his role, and then this season the Jets
- 8:23Speaker 3: make a trade for Jarvis Brownlee coming up from the Titans,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and Carter started seeing his roll cut.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Then he got hurt, he had a concussion.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And then he barely played last week, which might explain
- 8:35Speaker 3: like maybe the Jets knew that they were going to
- 8:36Speaker 3: trade him. So yeah, there's a reason. We'll get into
- 8:39Speaker 3: his contract in a couple of minutes. But there are
- 8:41Speaker 3: always teams. Again, don't just decide they're going to trade
- 8:44Speaker 3: a player they and we're seeing this. Keon White was
- 8:47Speaker 3: traded from the Patriots to the Niners. They got next
- 8:49Speaker 3: to nothing for him on the finality of his rookie deal. Yep,
- 8:53Speaker 3: you had Elliott Wolf who didn't draft him. Boy, they've
- 8:56Speaker 3: they've blown up the roster. It's like they want almost
- 8:58Speaker 3: every Belichick player off the Yeah, yeah, again, there's a
- 9:03Speaker 3: reason why things happen. Carter, he's still young. He got
- 9:07Speaker 3: the extension. This is really interesting. And again, Darren Mujie
- 9:11Speaker 3: is the new GM, so he didn't draft him, and
- 9:14Speaker 3: he also didn't do with the extension. Douglas did last
- 9:17Speaker 3: year with whoever did the contract, but it did the
- 9:20Speaker 3: extension right before the twenty fourth season started, and then
- 9:22Speaker 3: you're trading the year after that's the way it is.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 9:29Speaker 1: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 9:32Speaker 1: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 9:36Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 9:41Speaker 1: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 9:44Speaker 1: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 9:52Speaker 1: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 9:55Speaker 1: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 9:59Speaker 1: at the fairest prices, So whether you're stocking up for
- 10:02Speaker 1: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 10:10Speaker 1: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 10:15Speaker 1: service members, and healthcare pros. Cammed inn Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 10:20Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 10:23Speaker 1: one and up. Yeah, it means the Jets have to
- 10:26Speaker 1: pick up a good deal of that money. I believe
- 10:28Speaker 1: after this year, the guaranteed money it's not like the
- 10:30Speaker 1: Eagles are gonna be owing.
- 10:33Speaker 2: There's no guaranteed money for.
- 10:35Speaker 1: On the Eagles. I'm saying, right, the Jets probably paid
- 10:38Speaker 1: it all out, is what I'm saying.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Either. Yeah, what it was is all right, I'll give
- 10:42Speaker 2: you the exact I think.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I'm just basically, when you give you got an extension
- 10:46Speaker 1: and you're the team that does it, the team that
- 10:47Speaker 1: picks it up usually doesn't have to and that's the
- 10:49Speaker 1: case here the Eagles.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Well, no, it depends if you don't know. It depends
- 10:52Speaker 3: if there's future guaranteed money.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And I know what I'm saying. I'm pretty sure with
- 10:55Speaker 1: this one, there's not right.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I know what it was is there was injury guarantee
- 10:58Speaker 3: in your two NFL dot Com that he waived the
- 11:02Speaker 3: injury guarantee, right, so the guarantees were paid. The guarantee
- 11:07Speaker 3: in Carter's contract came in the form of a signing
- 11:10Speaker 3: boat of six million, which the Jets are responsible for.
- 11:12Speaker 3: That was my point, yes, right right now. And the
- 11:15Speaker 3: option bonus this season, which the Jets were responsible for.
- 11:18Speaker 3: The rest of the guarantee was in five point four
- 11:20Speaker 3: million dollar injury guarantee. Eagles would have been responsible for it,
- 11:25Speaker 3: but he waved it in the conditions of the trade,
- 11:28Speaker 3: which I get because God forbid, he suffered an injury
- 11:30Speaker 3: and they'd be potentially be in the hook for it.
- 11:33Speaker 3: But the cash number next year, and this is something
- 11:36Speaker 3: they're gonna have to get through if he plays lights out.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Even so, I don't know if they're gonna take it.
- 11:40Speaker 3: It's ten point two five million. It's just under ten
- 11:43Speaker 3: million in base salary. He's got over five hundred grand
- 11:46Speaker 3: in per game roster bonuses. That's a lot of money
- 11:48Speaker 3: for a nickel who needs to kind of rebuild himself here.
- 11:50Speaker 1: But look backloaded deal exactly the.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Basic the best case scenarios he plays lights out. By
- 11:57Speaker 3: the way, he signed through twenty twenty seven, so we'll see.
- 12:01Speaker 3: But the Eagles bet here is that he becomes the
- 12:04Speaker 3: player he once was and they could play coop on
- 12:07Speaker 3: the outside.
- 12:07Speaker 2: And boy, to me, you're way better right if that
- 12:11Speaker 2: what we just talked about works out, yep.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And that's what I meant also by the fact finding
- 12:15Speaker 1: is this, they have a plan, they know what they
- 12:16Speaker 1: want to do. Now it's up to Vic, like you
- 12:18Speaker 1: were saying, to see what he sees in practice. Can
- 12:21Speaker 1: he learn my system, does he play it well? How
- 12:24Speaker 1: quickly can we get him on the field. Can he
- 12:26Speaker 1: execute what we are hoping that we wanted from him
- 12:30Speaker 1: when we traded for him. If he can, then that
- 12:32Speaker 1: gives us the opsonality if we want to move Cooper
- 12:35Speaker 1: to Gene outside, or it gives us, you know, some
- 12:37Speaker 1: depth here to play him in certain packages. The plan
- 12:41Speaker 1: is in their heads. Now they have to see if
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's executable based on on Carter adapting to the defense,
- 12:47Speaker 1: staying healthy, and carrying out the assignments the way he's
- 12:50Speaker 1: supposed to, and that if that happens, it'll be very interesting.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I think it also gives them Adam the flexibility to
- 12:57Speaker 1: be match up specific against an opponent. They may think
- 13:01Speaker 1: a certain opponent, may say opponent that runs the ball
- 13:04Speaker 1: a lot. They may like Cooper to Gene at the
- 13:05Speaker 1: slot and live with someone outside. But against a team
- 13:08Speaker 1: that maybe has two very good outside perimeter receivers, say
- 13:12Speaker 1: the Lions or anybody else coming up on schedule, they
- 13:15Speaker 1: may say, this is the opportunity for us to play
- 13:18Speaker 1: Carter in the slot and play the Gene outside. In
- 13:20Speaker 1: other words, it doesn't have to be an all or
- 13:22Speaker 1: nothing thing. It could be matchup specific, because we've already
- 13:25Speaker 1: seen Vic do that with certain with Cooper to gen himself,
- 13:30Speaker 1: sometimes he plays outside and base, then he plays slot
- 13:33Speaker 1: and nickel, so it just gives him another, I guess,
- 13:36Speaker 1: chess piece type of way to go about scheming up
- 13:39Speaker 1: his defense that overall makes you better. It'll be interesting
- 13:43Speaker 1: again to see if there's a corresponding move at cornerback
- 13:47Speaker 1: after this, because now you kind of have a glut
- 13:49Speaker 1: of corners Nichols slash corners on your fifty three.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's a shame that mac McWilliams just was
- 13:57Speaker 3: not ready because man, he had an interesting training camp
- 14:00Speaker 3: and it transactions always tell you what the teams think.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Yep, and Carter I know has he is very he
- 14:06Speaker 2: his minimal cornerback.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Snapcout snaps this with the Jets. The reason why they
- 14:14Speaker 3: paid him what they did three years just over thirty million,
- 14:20Speaker 3: and they guarantee the first two years was very simple.
- 14:22Speaker 3: He was one of the better nickels in the NFL,
- 14:24Speaker 3: and they just he kinda got usurped somewhat last year
- 14:28Speaker 3: and it was happening again and a new GM comes
- 14:31Speaker 3: in and say again, you see this all around the
- 14:33Speaker 3: NFL these it's sounded like the new GM's think, okay,
- 14:36Speaker 3: well we don't want this player.
- 14:37Speaker 2: He was drafted by somebody else.
- 14:38Speaker 3: They see the guy play and they go then they say,
- 14:41Speaker 3: you know what, we didn't draft him not playing well,
- 14:43Speaker 3: let's get him out of here. They got nothing for him,
- 14:45Speaker 3: and there's a lot of there's The good thing is, though,
- 14:48Speaker 3: if he plays well, the cool things you've got him
- 14:50Speaker 3: for twenty seven, work with the agent next year. You
- 14:52Speaker 3: already worked with him to drop the injury guarantee next year,
- 14:56Speaker 3: and then you you talk to him, you figure out
- 14:58Speaker 3: what the how much you want to pay him.
- 14:59Speaker 2: That that's a good thing to happen.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I mean, he you'd rather have the guy sign through
- 15:04Speaker 3: next season knowing that he can't be a free agent
- 15:06Speaker 3: if he plays well when rather than he plays lights
- 15:08Speaker 3: out and you know, oh geez, we don't have him
- 15:09Speaker 3: for next year.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Now we're going to pay him again, if you right.
- 15:12Speaker 1: So, Jacorean Bennett, that becomes interesting his role, right because
- 15:20Speaker 1: he has to be active onto the fifty three, right,
- 15:23Speaker 1: He still was not active for this game, that game
- 15:25Speaker 1: against the Giants, so he was still in the twenty
- 15:27Speaker 1: one day window from the.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he has not been Yeah, he has not been
- 15:30Speaker 2: put on fifty three. By the way, just a small correction,
- 15:34Speaker 2: Parry Nickerson was on the fifty three. He was cut
- 15:37Speaker 2: and then signed an Eagles practice squad.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Correct my fault. That's right, Yeah, yeah, right, yeah, he's
- 15:42Speaker 1: right right, So so, but they've still got a log
- 15:44Speaker 1: jam there. Once, assuming Bennett gets activated to the fifty
- 15:48Speaker 1: three for Green Bay, which you know, we don't know
- 15:51Speaker 1: for sure, but we're assuming that gives them Bennett, that
- 15:54Speaker 1: gives them Jackson, assuming he's back from his concussion, That
- 15:58Speaker 1: gives them Ringo. You obviously are going to have Cooper,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you have Quinny on and now you're you're adding Michael
- 16:05Speaker 1: Carter am I forgetting so oh, and you do have
- 16:07Speaker 1: on the fifty three Mac McWilliams. So that's one, two, three, four, five,
- 16:11Speaker 1: six seven corner slash Nichols on the fifty three. And
- 16:17Speaker 1: if you're not playing all seven, if you're not playing
- 16:19Speaker 1: all six, that becomes a dice, a little dicey. Uh,
- 16:23Speaker 1: somebody's job security is suddenly looking a little shaky. Possibly, Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you would have to think that somebody, as a dor Jackson.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I would think, well, he's coming.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Back because Ringo is a special teamer. Right, Mac McWilliams
- 16:36Speaker 1: is a rookie. I don't think they're gonna cut him
- 16:38Speaker 1: and Jacorey and Bennett is coming back, and you would
- 16:43Speaker 1: think that they want to take a look at him.
- 16:45Speaker 1: They do.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Look, they made it again, they made a trade for him.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Now he just had the worst lucky that both shoulders
- 16:50Speaker 3: repaired right when he was with the Raiders and then
- 16:52Speaker 3: he has uh pectoral injury. But here's the problem though.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Let me let me bring this up because you always
- 16:58Speaker 2: this is the way teams think, so this has been
- 17:01Speaker 2: drilled into me for years.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I'm just gonna mention this. What what if Quinion Mitchell
- 17:06Speaker 3: gets hurt? Right, because you're talking about cutting a Droy Jackson.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Where are they going here?
- 17:13Speaker 1: The gene outside Okay?
- 17:15Speaker 2: Which anyway, right, isn't.
- 17:17Speaker 1: That sort of the benefit of adding someone with inside
- 17:20Speaker 1: outside inside out versatility with Michael Carter because a Dori
- 17:23Speaker 1: does not have inside out versatility. I mean, he played
- 17:28Speaker 1: a little bit of Nickel, but I'm never not once
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think Vic was even asked about this in training
- 17:33Speaker 1: camp if they considered it playing him in Nickel and
- 17:36Speaker 1: he he poop pooed it.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So yeah, no, But what I'm saying is, if you
- 17:42Speaker 3: cut a Droy Jackson, right, let's look forward here and
- 17:44Speaker 3: Mitchell camp play. So you've got obviously Coop on the outside.
- 17:48Speaker 3: You really don't want Ringo out there. He can do
- 17:52Speaker 3: it for a short period of time.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Let's say it's four weeks, right, Let's say it's a
- 17:56Speaker 2: four week injury. You got a problem because you don't
- 17:59Speaker 2: have who else are gonna go to your back to
- 18:01Speaker 2: Ringo again?
- 18:03Speaker 1: I suppose? So it's tough like you. That's that's two
- 18:07Speaker 1: what ifs. It's it's like what if two guys aren't
- 18:09Speaker 1: ready to play again? I think you bring in Michael
- 18:12Speaker 1: Carter because he has inside outside versus could you all right,
- 18:17Speaker 1: could you wave mac McWilliams and think you can bring
- 18:20Speaker 1: him back?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Oh no, no, he's he's he's a nickel.
- 18:24Speaker 3: But who they cross ran training camp on the outside
- 18:26Speaker 3: and Michael Carter's got minimal outside, He's got minimal outside
- 18:31Speaker 3: reps in the NFL.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Well, do you roll the dice then with just seven
- 18:34Speaker 1: cornerbacks and try to make a I mean, I'm trying
- 18:38Speaker 1: to think who on the f who is the.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Seven corner who are the seven true corners. We're not
- 18:42Speaker 2: talking Nickel, No.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I'm talking corners and Nichols because you don't have seven
- 18:47Speaker 1: of either position. I'm just talking about your defensive backs
- 18:50Speaker 1: that aren't safeties you.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Got If you cut Jackson, you've got Cook could play both,
- 18:54Speaker 3: but we'll add them to the corner lest You've got Mature,
- 18:56Speaker 3: two Ringos, three Macquick one of it's really not.
- 19:01Speaker 2: They don't see him currently as a cornerback, so.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You would have Coot, Mitchell, Ringo, and Bennett as your
- 19:06Speaker 1: as you're outside for as your cornerbacks.
- 19:10Speaker 2: And Bennett it's not.
- 19:11Speaker 3: You're right, they absolutely need to take a look at him,
- 19:13Speaker 3: but they want to take a look on earlier.
- 19:14Speaker 2: They got hurt.
- 19:15Speaker 3: They're just there's no question this team can make another
- 19:18Speaker 3: Super Bowl run. This is a wide open year. You
- 19:20Speaker 3: talk to teams, everybody sees an opporunity because the league
- 19:23Speaker 3: is down.
- 19:24Speaker 2: In terms of overall performance. There are no dominant teams.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Why the hell can't Degals make another run? But if
- 19:29Speaker 2: you want to, you got to be at your best.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Okay, But then the Carter, you know Carter would give
- 19:34Speaker 1: them five though then Carter, because he can play outside,
- 19:37Speaker 1: would be the fifth.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But he's really again, he's really not.
- 19:40Speaker 1: He's he's you're talking about a fourth or fifth corner.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You're not getting it? Like, all right, then who you're cutting?
- 19:45Speaker 1: I guess I hear.
- 19:47Speaker 3: You, but I would keep if you and I are
- 19:50Speaker 3: on the show, I keep it Dory Jackson for now.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I wouldn't cut him.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Okay, experience, I'm saying, put the GM hat on. Keep
- 19:56Speaker 1: it Dory Jackson. Who goes somebody from a different position?
- 20:00Speaker 2: You could, Well, here's here's a spot.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You gotta open up a spot for Carter, and you
- 20:06Speaker 1: gotta open up a spot for Bennett.
- 20:10Speaker 2: They have one open now though it didn't don't they
- 20:12Speaker 2: because they cut Nickerson.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Because because of Metchi being traded. You're right, So being
- 20:17Speaker 1: traded opens up a spot for Carter, so like that
- 20:20Speaker 1: negates it, you're right, So then you just have to
- 20:22Speaker 1: open up a spot for Bennett.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Well, Nickerson was cut, he's on the practice squad.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but Brandon Graham's gonna come.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Back, Okay, let's right, Well for him, good good call. Right, Well, here's.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Noan Smith is going to come back soon.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Well, AJ Dillon, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't be
- 20:41Speaker 3: asked to go to the pre like, hey, could.
- 20:42Speaker 2: You would you be willing if we're going to release you?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Agree with you?
- 20:45Speaker 2: You could do that.
- 20:46Speaker 3: That's that's the way I would approach it, because if
- 20:48Speaker 3: you look at on your point cuttable players. Not cutting
- 20:51Speaker 3: Darius Cooper. No, he's got a future with a team.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Remember Dotson's up after the season, right, Uh, Patrick Johnson
- 20:59Speaker 3: is a nice job.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yeah job.
- 21:03Speaker 3: They're not cutting smile on and they supported special teams
- 21:05Speaker 3: he was a draft e right.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Not cutting Sidney Brown and he's playing special team.
- 21:10Speaker 2: It's not it's important.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I think you're right, Dylan. But again that so Dylan
- 21:14Speaker 1: could be the cut to make room for to keep
- 21:17Speaker 1: those seven corners. But then when Nolan Smith is ready,
- 21:21Speaker 1: then you have to make a move.
- 21:23Speaker 2: And but you're not cutting Brett Tooth after he came
- 21:25Speaker 2: out of the blue. Unbelievable.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Get Mike, folks with Jeff and I haven't done our
- 21:30Speaker 3: show we did with greg O Sell, but.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'm just I'm still kind of awe. I popped it,
- 21:35Speaker 2: you know. I watched the tape after after what I
- 21:38Speaker 2: had heard, and then we did the show with Gregor.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Okay, I got to watch this. I don't know what
- 21:43Speaker 3: to say other than you can say where the hell's
- 21:45Speaker 3: has been? But you know the players. When Andrew and
- 21:47Speaker 3: I do the show with Will Shipley uh for WBCB
- 21:51Speaker 3: at Chicken Pizze at Roosevelt Boulevard, where Andrew and Andrew
- 21:56Speaker 3: and I will be this.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Tuesday, by the way, again Will Will Will was very direct.
- 22:02Speaker 2: He said, listen, this guy is super smart. He wasn't
- 22:05Speaker 2: just saying he wasn't taking the team. Oh you know
- 22:07Speaker 2: you help teams play players. Oh, he's kuy smart.
- 22:11Speaker 3: He was explaining why, and and it resonated with me
- 22:14Speaker 3: after watching this because because we talked about it with Greg,
- 22:17Speaker 3: his athleticism, knowing where to go, knowing how to do it.
- 22:20Speaker 3: I just can't explain what the hell he was so
- 22:22Speaker 3: bad before that game. I don't know what to tell you,
- 22:26Speaker 3: but he was so good as a center of up
- 22:30Speaker 3: places crazy.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I can't cut him.
- 22:33Speaker 1: No, he couldn't predict. Yeah, no, you couldn't.
- 22:36Speaker 2: You can't do exactly, Drew Kennell know because he's a drafte.
- 22:39Speaker 1: No, probably not Matt Pryor. You're still gonna want some
- 22:42Speaker 1: on the line. It's tough.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's tough, Queen could you can do the roster tangle.
- 22:47Speaker 2: You could approach the agent say, hey, here's where we're at.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Would he be willing to if we release him, be
- 22:53Speaker 2: willing to go to the practice squad? I mean he
- 22:55Speaker 2: could do that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: That's a good point. And if an agent said, yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 1: but if I get a job, I get a job,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna take.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Exactly Yeah, I'm gonna yeah, exactly right.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And then to your point, what if you get injury
- 23:05Speaker 1: at right guard, you may not be comfortable. You're not
- 23:07Speaker 1: gonna be comfortable playing toe there. Even if Dickerson's back
- 23:10Speaker 1: or Jurgons is back, you they're pretty much only played
- 23:13Speaker 1: tooth at center and left guard. And I don't I
- 23:16Speaker 1: just don't know what they would do in that regard.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I would agree with you. So lots of fascinations here.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, But by the way, somebody can get hurt
- 23:25Speaker 1: between now and then anyway, and we have to see
- 23:28Speaker 1: if Nolan Smith is going to come back by the
- 23:30Speaker 1: Packers game. So there's there's a whole lot that's going
- 23:32Speaker 1: to go into this as well.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's pretty much it, but it's fascinating. It wasn't
- 23:38Speaker 3: the corner I was thinking.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Of, Oh, I'm sorry a dB okay, Carter dB sorry Vic. Yeah.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I love the way he explains, because man did he
- 23:47Speaker 3: brushed back when people called, uh, whoever it was last
- 23:51Speaker 3: year Vonky Maddox at corner because no, he's a nickel yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 3: or whoever was he was talking about.
- 23:56Speaker 2: He's no, no, no, no, no, he's a nickel. That
- 23:58Speaker 2: explained it.
- 23:59Speaker 1: That's that there's no corner to play when you're in.
- 24:02Speaker 3: No, no, And he explained edges like linebackers are inside players,
- 24:07Speaker 3: they're true linebackers, where other teams call.
- 24:11Speaker 2: O l B like I VI calls some O l
- 24:12Speaker 2: B s with O l B s or edge rushers,
- 24:15Speaker 2: so old school. I love that.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I'm always call them now now it's nickel edge.
- 24:20Speaker 2: That was fascinating. What's that?
- 24:24Speaker 1: That's the specific stand up edge in a four to
- 24:26Speaker 1: three front?
- 24:27Speaker 3: Well, then and and and and he's a run he's
- 24:30Speaker 3: a run defender. Though the way he explained it, he's
- 24:32Speaker 3: not there, he's not there to rush the really interesting.
- 24:35Speaker 2: He's a bass what's that?
- 24:37Speaker 1: He's a bass edge, not a nickel edge.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Correct? And are we going to see Jihad rush the
- 24:44Speaker 2: passer like truly line up as an edge rusher. On
- 24:48Speaker 2: the ball and Rush I don't know.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I don't think so now not with Graham and and
- 24:52Speaker 1: Nolan Smith probably ready to come.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I don't exactly.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Now that's if b g who did say no expectations,
- 24:58Speaker 3: because he put that out for a reason.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You gotta see he got it.
- 25:01Speaker 3: He's got it, he's got a practice, and everybody's got
- 25:03Speaker 3: to see how he feels and looks.
- 25:04Speaker 2: You know, you don't know. And then they both had
- 25:07Speaker 2: what they both had triceps issues, right, not.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Mistaken, Yes, both trips.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, so they both had setbacks.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Hey, I still like a good night out, but I'm
- 25:15Speaker 1: not always in the mood to drink. And that's why

- 26:38Speaker 1: Com promo code birds for thirty percent off. So let's
- 26:42Speaker 1: cap this with this with the with Michael Carter getting
- 26:44Speaker 1: back to him give some optionality. I think that the
- 26:47Speaker 1: idea if anybody thinks that this means permanent, like Cooper
- 26:51Speaker 1: to Gene, will a move outside permanently for the rest
- 26:54Speaker 1: of this year and then beyond, put pump the brakes
- 26:56Speaker 1: on that, because Carter may only be here for this.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Like you, you some of it perfectly. You're trying to
- 27:01Speaker 1: win a super Bowl. You're trying to give yourself the
- 27:03Speaker 1: best personnel possible. His contract is aligned so that next
- 27:06Speaker 1: year he may not be with the team and it
- 27:08Speaker 1: wouldn't cost the Eagles anything. So and we know Vick's
- 27:12Speaker 1: not talking out of both sides of his mouth. He
- 27:14Speaker 1: really does love Cooper to Gen as his nickel. And
- 27:17Speaker 1: by this time next year they may draft a corner
- 27:20Speaker 1: in the first round, an outside corner first round, second round,
- 27:23Speaker 1: and decide that that's going to be their guy opposite
- 27:25Speaker 1: Mitchell and Cooper. De Gen goes back to playing slot
- 27:28Speaker 1: full time. This is about here the now, and you
- 27:32Speaker 1: made a great point, and doesn't mean they can't go
- 27:34Speaker 1: out and get another outside player on the trade market.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But I think Howie smart enough to know it's really
- 27:41Speaker 1: hard to find a true, good starting cornerback on the
- 27:46Speaker 1: trade market without giving up the whole farm, because teams
- 27:49Speaker 1: don't want to give those guys away for nothing. So
- 27:51Speaker 1: you might as well get yourself a good option now,
- 27:54Speaker 1: and if another one materializes, that's great. If not, we
- 27:58Speaker 1: have a better situation than we did before were going
- 28:01Speaker 1: into the trade deadline.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Listen, Carter was one of the better nickels, not just
- 28:04Speaker 3: young knuckles, one of the best nickels in the NFL
- 28:06Speaker 3: for a bit, and then last year started getting this
- 28:09Speaker 3: roll cut. And you know, this year, same thing happened,
- 28:11Speaker 3: and the Jets made it clear to everybody they were
- 28:14Speaker 3: moving him. This is the best that they can get,
- 28:16Speaker 3: so they took it. You guys, get a talented player
- 28:18Speaker 3: who's still pretty young. You know, he had the concussion
- 28:21Speaker 3: he was he's cleared now, by the way, all trades,
- 28:24Speaker 3: I should say, he did play last week, but all
- 28:26Speaker 3: trades are continual player passing the physical.
- 28:28Speaker 2: So we're assuming he's going to pass it.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and if he does, he'll be an eagle. And
- 28:32Speaker 3: then they'll get him into practice.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I know they were.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I know they're in for meetings on Monday. But the practice,
- 28:37Speaker 3: true practice weeks starts Thursday. As you said, it's Thursday, Friday,
- 28:41Speaker 3: and Saturday. He has the dreaded of Saturday practice because
- 28:44Speaker 3: they travel Sunday to get to Green Bay. By the way,
- 28:46Speaker 3: real quick, when you went to see the Packers, Eagles.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Did you have to take three planes or two?
- 28:52Speaker 1: No, just too. I think I would fly from Philly
- 28:54Speaker 1: to Milwaukee Milwaukee. Well, a couple of times outam, I
- 28:59Speaker 1: stayed in Milwaukewaukeeka drove up because it's you know, it's
- 29:02Speaker 1: obviously a a it's a more fun city than either
- 29:05Speaker 1: staying in Appleton. You can't stay in Green Bay. There's
- 29:07Speaker 1: nowhere that's already booked up. So you're staying either nearby
- 29:10Speaker 1: Appleton or there's another town that I'm not thinking of
- 29:13Speaker 1: that's close either way. But yeah, a couple of times
- 29:17Speaker 1: I stayed in Milwaukee and would drive up. But the
- 29:19Speaker 1: time I did fly in time or two, I believe
- 29:22Speaker 1: I flew from Philly to Milwaukee or a Philly to
- 29:25Speaker 1: Chicago and then Chicago or Milwaukee into Green Bay.
- 29:30Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. They used to play some of
- 29:33Speaker 3: their games in Milwaukee, going back like thirty years ago,
- 29:35Speaker 3: and then.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I remember that, Yeah, I remember they do it anymore.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, and that's stating one and great, But
- 29:40Speaker 3: the bottom line is they got the Packers and Lions
- 29:44Speaker 3: coming up.
- 29:45Speaker 2: We're really gonna learn about the secondary very very soon.
- 29:47Speaker 1: So indeed, all right, great, great, Well, we are gonna
- 29:51Speaker 1: have some more Inside the Birds content during this bye week.
- 29:53Speaker 1: We're gonna dour our team self scouting episode coming up.
- 29:57Speaker 1: We'll go through the offense and the defense in the
- 29:59Speaker 1: coming days, so make sure you look out for that.
- 30:01Speaker 1: That'll do it for this episode of Inside the Birds
- 30:04Speaker 1: of the leading podcast in Eagles Intel, and as always,
- 30:07Speaker 1: we thank you for flying with us Inside the Birds.
