Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi everyone, and welcome.
- 0:01Speaker 2: We were at Cafe Or in Manchester for the first
- 0:05Speaker 2: of our final two coaches shows of the season. We've
- 0:07Speaker 2: got a second one after that's recorded with Dan Hurley,
- 0:10Speaker 2: Alex Caravan and Mike Crispino. But I'm Bob Joyce, Gino
- 0:13Speaker 2: Oriema with me and we have a special guest tonight.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Guy I just saw Monday at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue, Mike Cavin,
- 0:19Speaker 2: all the hockey coach. These two have wanted to do
- 0:21Speaker 2: a show together for a long time, and tonight is
- 0:24Speaker 2: a bonus show with Gino, so we got Cavin here.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Tonight's so gentlemen. First of all, thanks for doing this.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I know you guys have wanted to do this for
- 0:33Speaker 1: a while.
- 0:34Speaker 2: You said it best, though, Gina last week Friday or
- 0:37Speaker 2: last time we did the show here last week. It's
- 0:40Speaker 2: not just your friendship when you get to talk about
- 0:42Speaker 2: your particular sports. You guys are so different in a
- 0:47Speaker 2: lot of ways away from the game action. You tend
- 0:51Speaker 2: to leave the game at home and worry about other
- 0:53Speaker 2: things when you get home, and that's one of the
- 0:55Speaker 2: good things about you too. Very down to earth guys,
- 0:58Speaker 2: And here we go.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But that's it.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Seems like you two are very much alike in a
- 1:03Speaker 2: lot of ways, both as co.
- 1:07Speaker 1: But as coaches and his friends. Though, Hey, I'm Irish too, so.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I feel like a meat all here
- 1:16Speaker 3: in front of two heads of cabbage or something. You know,
- 1:19Speaker 3: what's up with.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Your Saint Patrick's Day thing here too?
- 1:22Speaker 1: What about it?
- 1:22Speaker 4: What do you guys know about like Irish food? Because
- 1:25Speaker 4: it's not very good.
- 1:26Speaker 3: No, that's what I'm saying. This is for this Saint
- 1:29Speaker 3: Patrick's Day here is for all the Irish people to
- 1:31Speaker 3: come drink Irish drinks and eat good food. So that's
- 1:35Speaker 3: the best part of being Irish. You don't, right, drink
- 1:39Speaker 3: Guinness redbreast, blue dot, green dot, How many dots?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yellow spot?
- 1:46Speaker 2: All right, this first segment, we should talk a little
- 1:48Speaker 2: you kind of women's basketball, because it is your show
- 1:51Speaker 2: to talk about your team.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Then we'll really get into a calv a little later on.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But your team.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Seems to be in a good spot, great atmosphere. Sunday,
- 1:58Speaker 2: by the way, at the garden with ninety six hundred,
- 2:00Speaker 2: anybody there.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Was anybody anybody else out the garden.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that Micha and Paul, they're always there. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 2: it was a fabulous atmosphere. Saint John's did a great
- 2:07Speaker 2: job marketing the game. Your team played well, everybody seemed
- 2:11Speaker 2: to contribute. And thirty one and oh eleventh undefeated regular
- 2:16Speaker 2: season in program history.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That's not too shabby.
- 2:23Speaker 3: As you mix your drink, yeah, I know, yeah, people
- 2:28Speaker 3: like to talk about that. You know, winning the regular
- 2:31Speaker 3: season is great, but obviously, you know where we coach
- 2:39Speaker 3: at Connecticut, people will always look around and go, I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 3: Mike's not there yet, but you know they will be
- 2:46Speaker 3: like this year, if they if they finished one game ahead,
- 2:50Speaker 3: one game out of the frozen four, people will go, oh,
- 2:53Speaker 3: what happened? You know, like, once you set a standard
- 2:56Speaker 3: of where your program can be, anything less than that
- 3:00Speaker 3: feels like a huge setback. You know. So, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you win, you have an undefeated season, but you have
- 3:07Speaker 3: to finish that off with something that's you know, bigger
- 3:11Speaker 3: and better than that. And sometimes it pans out that way.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I think seven of those times we won a championship
- 3:19Speaker 3: and five of those times we have not. You know,
- 3:22Speaker 3: so these things happen and you get to celebrate the
- 3:25Speaker 3: regular season and it was great and no one going,
- 3:28Speaker 3: no one going went into the season thinking, I think
- 3:30Speaker 3: we can be undefeated this year in the regular season.
- 3:32Speaker 3: It's not something you set out to do, but you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: teams have a way of just feeding off themselves. You know,
- 3:41Speaker 3: when things start going good, everybody feels good, and you
- 3:44Speaker 3: know it's hard to keep that momentum going for thirty
- 3:47Speaker 3: one games, obviously. You know, it helps to play some
- 3:50Speaker 3: of the teams that we play that you know are
- 3:54Speaker 3: really really good and some that are not quite good.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Right, And it's kind of an interesting day because talking
- 4:01Speaker 2: with Mike and we were having this conversation on one
- 4:03Speaker 2: of our shows. They come back from main feeling they
- 4:06Speaker 2: didn't play great, but they got five points on the weekend,
- 4:09Speaker 2: and then they come back with BC and UMass, they
- 4:12Speaker 2: played great, especially this past weekend, and they come out
- 4:15Speaker 2: with one point. That's and you played really well. That's
- 4:19Speaker 2: just part of sports.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I just want three games like him where I can
- 4:23Speaker 4: just go out there and win easy.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Hockey East is in that way. You could play
- 4:30Speaker 3: against the two of us and three of our kids,
- 4:32Speaker 3: and hockey's not an easy game.
- 4:34Speaker 4: If I get a win for that to make it easy, yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But does everybody understand what the points system is in
- 4:40Speaker 3: hockey on weekends.
- 4:42Speaker 4: No, not this group.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Alright, go ahead, explain it to him.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Explain it if you can get in Hockey East, if
- 4:48Speaker 4: we win a game in regulation, it's three points. If
- 4:52Speaker 4: we win a game in overtime, it's two. If you
- 4:55Speaker 4: lose a game in overtime, it's one. So that's essentially
- 4:59Speaker 4: our point structure. So you know, we played really well
- 5:03Speaker 4: against UMass, outshot him forty to twenty or whatever it was,
- 5:09Speaker 4: and I lost the game. That happens, and then the
- 5:12Speaker 4: next night we outshot him fifty three to twenty and
- 5:16Speaker 4: got one point because we lost. No, I'm sorry, we
- 5:18Speaker 4: tied in overtime and then they won the shootout, which
- 5:21Speaker 4: is for the extra point. So it happened sometimes. But
- 5:26Speaker 4: we played really, really well, and we ran into a hot.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Goaltender who's six foot seven.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yeah he could. Yeah, he'll played for the men's basketball team.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Probably he couldn't be a small forward.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Speaking of post players, Sarah Williams had quite the game
- 5:42Speaker 2: Sunday night, and as you mentioned afterwards, maybe her first
- 5:45Speaker 2: game as a Husky or maybe her best game, maybe
- 5:49Speaker 2: her best half. I thought she played well in the
- 5:52Speaker 2: second half and she didn't really you know, there was
- 5:54Speaker 2: no hesitation offensively from her either.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's hard to lane. You know why it would
- 6:05Speaker 3: why would be like that sometimes and why it would
- 6:08Speaker 3: not be like that sometimes? You know, Normally you think
- 6:11Speaker 3: when you're you know, when you're a player, you you
- 6:13Speaker 3: try really really hard to be the same every night,
- 6:17Speaker 3: even though you know obviously it's not it's not easy
- 6:19Speaker 3: to be that, but it's it's pretty simple. I think,
- 6:24Speaker 3: you know, if you have a big kid, it's probably
- 6:28Speaker 3: like you know, if you've got great defenseman, if you've
- 6:32Speaker 3: got a great goalie, if you have a big kid,
- 6:34Speaker 3: their job is pretty simple. It's not complicated. Okay, don't
- 6:38Speaker 3: give up labs right, make sure you protect the basket. Otherwise,
- 6:43Speaker 3: why not just play with five guards so you're a
- 6:47Speaker 3: big kit, protect the basket, don't give up easy labs right,
- 6:52Speaker 3: and rebound the basketball. So if you can do those
- 6:56Speaker 3: two things, then you are really, really, really a key
- 6:59Speaker 3: part of the team. It doesn't matter a few score
- 7:02Speaker 3: points or don't score points. That's that's irrelevant. If you do,
- 7:06Speaker 3: that's an added bonus. Dennis Rodb Yeah, I mean you could,
- 7:12Speaker 3: you can, you can, you can, you know, Bill Russell
- 7:14Speaker 3: the perfect example. Now, not everybody, but in today's world,
- 7:17Speaker 3: not everybody wants to be that person. You know. They
- 7:20Speaker 3: want everybody wants to shoot, everybody wants to score, everybody
- 7:24Speaker 3: wants to get you know, some tiktoks. And and I
- 7:28Speaker 3: just think that, you know, if you're Sarah Williams and
- 7:30Speaker 3: you say, look, every game, I'm going to rebound the ball,
- 7:33Speaker 3: I'm going to play good defense, make sure I protect
- 7:35Speaker 3: the basket, and then whatever buckets I get, I get them,
- 7:38Speaker 3: you know. And I shouldn't have to try really really
- 7:40Speaker 3: really hard to get them, you know. And and this
- 7:46Speaker 3: is the other thing. You know, people say, we why
- 7:47Speaker 3: don't you pass the ball more to the big guys?
- 7:50Speaker 1: So we do? We shoot it?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a fifty right, if we take ten shots,
- 7:58Speaker 3: we're going to miss five of them. Well those are
- 7:59Speaker 3: five pass just to you go get it. Yeah, yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 3: I mean that's the way we look at it, right, right,
- 8:07Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know, I don't know, but I
- 8:12Speaker 3: I I like I like the that when we play, well,
- 8:18Speaker 3: it's because we play together, and basketball is so much
- 8:22Speaker 3: that's you know, it's good to have Mike here because
- 8:24Speaker 3: basketball is so much like ice hockey. You know, it's
- 8:27Speaker 3: a five on five game, you know, and all five
- 8:31Speaker 3: guys have.
- 8:31Speaker 1: To be really really good with each other.
- 8:35Speaker 3: They don't just have to be good individually, they have
- 8:37Speaker 3: to be really really good with each other. And when
- 8:40Speaker 3: it's played like that, it's a really beautiful game to watch.
- 8:45Speaker 3: You know. The puck moves, the ball moves, people move,
- 8:48Speaker 3: everything's in sync. You know, nobody's holding the puck or
- 8:51Speaker 3: nobody's holding the ball too long, and it's just boom
- 8:53Speaker 3: boom boom boom boom. And you know, even if you
- 8:56Speaker 3: don't score it, you know, you know you're playing well,
- 8:58Speaker 3: you know, and it's those times that make us make
- 9:02Speaker 3: our team look better than most teams in the country
- 9:04Speaker 3: because we move the ball better than most teams in
- 9:06Speaker 3: the country.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Now, we'll get into that five on five dynamic between
- 9:08Speaker 2: hoops and hockey in a minute. We need to take
- 9:10Speaker 2: our first break. Gino Oriema, Mike Kavanaugh. We're live at
- 9:13Speaker 2: kaffe Or in Manchester. Back in a minute here on
- 9:15Speaker 2: their field,
