- 0:38Who's there. It's Susie, and I'm taking you out for
- 0:41a Perfect Father's Day. Susie said, First, we'll go for lunch.
- 0:46Good Dad said, may I drive? Certainly? Susie said, have
- 0:52a good time. Mom called As they waved goodbye. Susie
- 0:56chose where they'd eat. This is your favorite food, isn't it? Dad?
- 1:00She asked? Sure is? Dad said, may I pay? Certainly.
- 1:06Susie said, I think we'll go to the duck pond
- 1:09after lunch. Susie said, you like to feed the ducks,
- 1:13don't you, Dad? Sure do? Dad said, may I buy
- 1:17the duck food? Certainly? Susie said, And I think we'll
- 1:21go to the park after that. You like the park,
- 1:27don't you, Dad? Of course? Dad said, do you like
- 1:31the swings? Susie said, do you like the monkey bars?
- 1:36Do you like the merry go round? The giraffe's the best?
- 1:39I like them all? Dad said, do you want a balloon? Dad,
- 1:44Susie asked, Red balloons are my favorite. Dad bought a
- 1:50red one for Susie and a blue one to bring
- 1:52home to mom. Are you having a good Father's Day
- 1:56so far, Susie asked. Dad smiled perfect, But I think
- 2:00we should go home now. Mom will be waiting. Will
- 2:03you hold the balloons while I drive? Certainly, Susie said.
- 2:08Dad closed the car window so the balloons wouldn't float away,
- 2:13and so Susie wouldn't float away either. Mom has a
- 2:16special cake for you. Susie said. It's chocolate with chocolate
- 2:21frosting and yellow writing, and it says Happy Father's Day,
- 2:24and there are four yellow candles, one for every year
- 2:27you've been my dad. It's a surprise. I like surprises,
- 2:32Dad said. Mom was wearing her prettiest T shirt, the
- 2:36one with sparkles that Dad liked. Their prettiest cloth was
- 2:40on the table so was the cake Dad gave Mama
- 2:44kiss and the blue balloon. My goodness, He said. That
- 2:48cake's chocolate has chocolate frosting and yellow writing. And this
- 2:52is a happy Father's Day. And there are four yellow candles,
- 2:55one for every year I've been Susie's dead. What a surprise.
- 3:00Dad liked surprises, Susie to Mom. I like chocolate too,
- 3:05Dad said, And he blew out the candles and cut
- 3:08a big piece of cake for each one of them.
- 3:11We did all of Dad's favorite things and went to
- 3:14all his favorite places. Susie to Mom. It has been
- 3:18a perfect Father's day so far, perfect, Dad said. May
- 3:23I have a hug? Certainly, Susie said. Our next book
- 3:28is The Berenstein Bears We Love Our Dads. It was
- 3:32published by Harper Festival and imprint of Harper Collins Publishers.
- 3:37Berenstein Publishing Incorporated has a copywriter of twenty thirteen and
- 3:43the authors are Jan and Mike Benstein, sister brother and
- 3:47honey Bear loved their papa. They loved him very much.
- 3:51After all, he was always there for them. He baited
- 3:53their hooks when they went fishing, He threw them fly
- 3:56balls when they played catch. He was there spooler on
- 4:00their way to the top of Dead Bear Hill. He
- 4:03carried them on his shoulders when they got tired, and
- 4:06rushed them to the doctor when they were hurt. He
- 4:08told them funny stories and corny jokes. He read to
- 4:12them at bedtime, tucked them in and kissed them good night. Yes,
- 4:17the Cups certainly loved their Papa Bear, but sometimes they
- 4:21took him a bit for granted, after all, he was
- 4:24always there, they never even noticed some of the things
- 4:27he did. Like working. Papa worked very hard. He worked
- 4:31in a shop all day making furniture. He worked fixing
- 4:34things up around the house. He worked doing chores like
- 4:37mowing the lawn or shoveling snow or taking out the trash.
- 4:42It's true that Papa enjoyed working, but he enjoyed getting
- 4:44credit for it sometimes too. One warm spring morning, not
- 4:48long after Mother's Day, the cups were talking about what
- 4:51they would do for Father's Day. Mama was listening to
- 4:55them nearby. Let's make Papa big family album with pictures
- 5:00of us doing stuff with him, said sister. We just
- 5:03gave Mama an album like that for Mother's Day, said brother.
- 5:07Oh yeah, said sister. Honeybear was looking out the window
- 5:10watching Papa mowing the lawn. Papa working. She said, what's that, Honey,
- 5:16asked Mama, Papa working, said honey, pointing hmm. Said Mama,
- 5:22Honey just had a good idea. She did, said brother
- 5:26and sister. Yes, said Mama, your papa works very hard.
- 5:30Be a nice gift if you cubs did his jobs
- 5:32for him on Father's Day and let him relax. Now
- 5:37that they thought about it, it was true. Papa did
- 5:40work all the time. He could use the rest way
- 5:43to go, Honeybear, said sister and brother, giving her high fives.
- 5:49The cubs decided to make gift certificates that Papa could
- 5:53cash in for jobs they would do all that day.
- 5:56They followed him around, spying on him. They checked off
- 5:59the jobs he did on a clipboard. Carrying wood, says
- 6:03sister carrying wood, check said brother check said, Honey, painting
- 6:08the garage, said sister painting the garage. Check said brother
- 6:14check said Honey replacing loose tree bark on treehouse, said
- 6:18sister replacing loose tree bark check said, brother check said honey.
- 6:27The cups followed Popa the next day too. They didn't
- 6:30put furniture making on their list because they didn't know
- 6:34how to make furniture. But they did check off things
- 6:36like trimming the rose bushes, putting up fence rails, and
- 6:40cleaning out the basement. That evening, they made a gift
- 6:43certificate for each job. The gift certificates looked like this,
- 6:50with the gift certificate good for one job of washing
- 6:55the car, taking out trash, cleaning the workshop, long planting grass.
- 7:02The cubs couldn't wait for Father's stay to arrive so
- 7:05they could surprise him with their special gift. On Father's Day,
- 7:10the cubs woke up right and early. They waited until
- 7:14nearly six am before running into Mom and Papa's room
- 7:17and jumping on the bed. Happy Father's Day, they yelled,
- 7:21Uh oh, what, said Papa sleepily. Is it Father's Day?
- 7:26Of course it is, said the cubs. Open your present.
- 7:30They gave him a big given what Papa thought it
- 7:32was a card? Why, thank you, he said, But when
- 7:35he opened it, the gift certificates spilled out. What's this?
- 7:39He asked. Their gift certificates you cash in for us
- 7:43to do your jobs, explained brother, you can just relax
- 7:46all day. What a thoughtful gift, said Papa. It was
- 7:50Honey's idea, says sister. Thank you, Honey, said Papa, giving
- 7:55all his thoughtful cubs a big hug. I think I'd
- 8:01like to spend the day just watching football, said Papa.
- 8:04It's Father's Day, so Mama, you can do whatever you like. Wow,
- 8:09said Papa, suddenly down in his easy chair in front
- 8:11of the TV. I could get used to this. Papa
- 8:15cashing his gift certificates and the cups set to work.
- 8:19Their first job was washing the car. They got out buckets,
- 8:22soap cloths, and the garden house. They scrubbed and washed
- 8:26and rinsed, but the car still seemed a little dirty. Papa,
- 8:31they called, we're having trouble. Can you help us? Of course,
- 8:35he said, looking things over, you just need more elbow grease.
- 8:39I'll show you so. Papa and the cups scrubbed and
- 8:42washed and rinsed together. When they were done, the car
- 8:46was bright and clean and shiny. You go and relax now,
- 8:50Papa said. The cups will do the rest. Their next
- 8:54job was clean up the wood chips and Papa's shop.
- 8:56The cups got out dustpants, brooms, and a shop vacuum.
- 9:00And set to work. They swept and cleaned and vacuum
- 9:03but the shop still looked a little dirty. Papa, they called,
- 9:09we're having trouble. Can you help us? Of course, he said,
- 9:13looking things over, you just need to give it more.
- 9:16I'll show you so popping. The cups swept and cleaned
- 9:20and vacuumed together. When they were done, the shop was
- 9:24spick and span. You go and relax now, Papa said
- 9:28the cups, we'll do the rest. Their next job was
- 9:31spreading grass sea on the bare spots in the lawn.
- 9:34The cups got out rakes and bags of sea. Brother
- 9:37raked the hard packed earth while sister and honey spread
- 9:40the sea. But they soon got tired. They were still
- 9:44there was still a lot of bear spots left. Papa,
- 9:48they called, we're having trouble. Can you help us? Of course,
- 9:52he said, looking things over, you just need more muscle power.
- 9:56I'll show you so popping. The cups raked and spread
- 10:00the seed. When they were done, every bear spot on
- 10:03the lawn was covered with new seeds. You go and
- 10:08relax now, Papa said, the cups will do the rest.
- 10:11But Papa shook his head. Actually, he said, I'm getting
- 10:15bored just watching TV. It's more fun doing things with you.
- 10:20What shall we do next? How about some a game
- 10:24of baseball, said brother, Perfect, said Papa. So the whole
- 10:28family played ball. Brother's, sister and Honey took turns pitching, batting,
- 10:33and filding. Papa was catcher and Mama was the ump.
- 10:37A wonderful father's day was had by all. At bedtime,
- 10:41the cups took turns jumping off their beds into a
- 10:44big cushion. It isn't fair, said brothers. Papa helped him
- 10:49into his pajamas. There's a Mother's Day and a Father's Day.
- 10:53Why isn't their cups day? Papa smiled at mother bear.
- 10:57I haven't the faintest idea, he said Papa. Mama tucked
- 11:01the cubs in and turned out the light. Did you
- 11:04have a good Father's Day, Papa asked sister. Yes, sweetie,
- 11:08said Papa, kissing her brother and honey. Good night. The

- 14:16imprint trademark of Newmark Learning. It has a copy right
- 14:21year of twenty twenty five and it was written by
- 14:26Dorothy H. Price. Today's Daddy Dollar Day. Surprise. It's Saturday,
- 14:33my most favorite day of the week. That's when Daddy
- 14:35takes me into New York City. Mommy sits my baby
- 14:40sister Amira on her lap and waves goodbye. Last Daddy
- 14:45Dollar Day. Daddy gave me a shiny silver dollar. I
- 14:47can't wait to spend it. We jump on the bus
- 14:50across the street from our house. I lift the coin
- 14:53over the slot for the fair. Daddy's signals, no, save
- 14:57that for something special, he said. Daddy's taken me into
- 15:02New York City before the Empire State Building, Central Park,
- 15:06Madison Square Garden. Where are we going today, Daddy? It's
- 15:10Dady daughter Day surprise, he says. The bus exit the
- 15:15Lincoln Tunnel. My stretch wider and wider. Buildings rise taller
- 15:20and taller. Crowds grow larger and larger. The bus pulls
- 15:24into a humongous parking space. Our feet stopped down the
- 15:28stairs into the Port Authority bus terminal. We follow the
- 15:32subway signs. Daddy says, hurry, gotta catch the next train.
- 15:37I shoved my hand in my pocket for my silver dollar.
- 15:39Daddy waves one finger left to right, save that for
- 15:43something special, he says, winking. The train screeches. I squeeze
- 15:49Daddy's hand tight and don't let go. We hop on
- 15:52and off for a few stops up the subway stairs,
- 15:56then out into the city. Are you hungry? Daddy asks
- 15:59imm We walk to our favorite place. Dady scoops onions
- 16:05and cuerkrowd on two hot dogs. I squeeze too much.
- 16:08Ketchup b loop. It's okay, Daddy says, wiping the red spill.
- 16:13We get better, get moving for your surprise. Our feet
- 16:18stop down the subway stairs. Hurry, the train is here,
- 16:21Daddy says, but we're too slow. Swosh the doors closed.
- 16:26It's okay, Avery, we'll catch the next one a few
- 16:30minutes later. Swosh the doors open. We hop on, then
- 16:35offer a few stops up the subway stairs. We go
- 16:38out into the city. Where are we? I asked? Harlem,
- 16:42Daddy says, Malcolm X Boulevard in one hundred and thirty
- 16:46fifth Street. We walk to a building across from Harlem Hospital,
- 16:50where Daddy was born. This is it, he says, our
- 16:53daddy daughter day surprise. Welcome to the Schoenberg Center for
- 16:59Research and Culture. Daddy is excited so I am too.
- 17:05This is a National Historic Landmark. Daddy says, what does
- 17:09that mean? I asked. It means it can't be torn down,
- 17:12Daddy says. He points to a painting, and that's Roussio Schomberg.
- 17:18This library is named after him. Daddy walks and talks
- 17:21while I follow. He smiles at Ida b Wells, Tony Morrison,
- 17:26and Marcus Garvey. We've been to a lot of places
- 17:30on our daughter daddy days, the New York Public Library,
- 17:34Times Square, even the Bronx Zoo. But today I'm learning
- 17:37about black people who change the world. Mathematicians like Catherine Johnson,
- 17:43politicians David Dinkins, songwriters James Weldon Johnson, athletes Wilma Rudolph,
- 17:51even a little girl like me, Ruby Bridges. I want
- 17:55to change the world one day like her. Daddy. Daddy
- 17:58winks you will. Avery. We snap pictures in the Langston
- 18:04Hughes Lobby. Langston was famous Harlem writer. Daddy says. We
- 18:08pose for each shot. The librarian shushes us. Our giggles
- 18:13echoed loudly. Time to head home, Daddy says. We march
- 18:20out to the city, our feet stomped down the subway stairs.
- 18:24It's noisier than before. Daddy holds my hand, I squeeze
- 18:28tight and don't let go. Musicians jive to jazzy tunes.
- 18:33Rappers battle lyric for lyric. Hip hop dancers boogie to
- 18:37the beat. One of them moves through the crowd, collecting money.
- 18:42I pull out my silver dollar. Daddy winks down. It
- 18:45clinks just in time. The subway door swoosh, open up
- 18:49the subway stairs to the Port Authority bus terminal, back
- 18:53through the Lincoln Tunnel to the bus stop across the
- 18:55street from our house. Did you too have fun today?
- 19:00Mommy asked? We snuggle hug on our next Daddy daughter Day.
- 19:05I'll be the tour guides. Our next book is titled
- 19:09Owen's Day with Daddy and it was published by Clavis Publishing.
- 19:14It has a copyright ear of twenty twenty two and
- 19:18it was written by Jerry Ruff. Owen's daddy was holding
- 19:22the baby. He made sounds for the baby with his tongue, cluck, cluck.
- 19:26He smiled at the baby. He said, how you doing,
- 19:29little man? He kissed the baby right on the head.
- 19:33Owen stomped his foot and yelled, I want to do
- 19:36something with you, Daddy. The baby started to cry. My
- 19:42tummy feels sick, Owen said. When everything was calm again,
- 19:45I'm sorry to hear that, said Daddy. Do you still
- 19:49want to do something like what? Said Owen? Then he
- 19:52had an idea, not one thing, three things, okay, said Daddy,
- 19:58three things. What's that's the first thing? Owen thought about
- 20:02it the park. At the park, the duck swam in
- 20:06the pond. Duck duck hungry duck. Daddy called, duck, duck
- 20:11hungry duck. Owen called. Daddy, took the bag of dried
- 20:17corn from his pocket. He poured some corn into Owen's hand.
- 20:21Lunchtime munchtime, Daddy called. He tossed some corn on the grass.
- 20:26Lunchtime munchtime, Owen called, and he tossed some corn on
- 20:31the grass too. A mama duck and six baby ducks
- 20:34waddled over. They gobbled up the corn. You feed the babies,
- 20:39Daddy said. He poured more corn into Owen's hand. I'll
- 20:44feed the mama. Owen. Sprinkle corn by his feet. The
- 20:48babies came right up and ate it. He put a
- 20:50piece of corn on the toe of his shoe. One
- 20:53of the babies snatched it. He put a piece of
- 20:55corn in the middle of his hand and held it
- 20:57out a baby duck. Ate it it ate the corn
- 21:02on my hand, Owen shouted it. Likes you, said Daddy.
- 21:06When the corn was gone, Daddy crunched up the bag.
- 21:09What's next, he asked Owen. Owen thought about it. The playground.
- 21:15The playground had two slides, a big slide and a
- 21:18little slide. Which slide today, Daddy asked. Owen thought about it.
- 21:24The ladder on the big slide went up and up.
- 21:27One time, Owen had started climbing, but it was too high.
- 21:30He began to cry, and as Daddy carried him down.
- 21:34That one, said Owen, pointing to the little slide. Then
- 21:37he thought some more. No, that one, he said, pointing
- 21:40to the big slide. This time, Owen stood by the ladder.
- 21:44He looked up. His head felt funny, his tommy felt funny.
- 21:48He touched the ladder. It was code. I'll be right
- 21:51behind you, Daddy said. Together, Owen and his daddy climbed
- 21:56the ladder. At the top, Daddy said, you can sit
- 21:59on my lap. When they were ready, Daddy said, let's
- 22:02count one, two, three down they went. Owen screamed his
- 22:08Daddy screamed. When their feet touched the ground, Owen shouted again, weee.
- 22:15After three more times, Daddy said, it's almost lunchtime. What's
- 22:18next to Owen? Owen thought about it. Sheeese burgers. At
- 22:23the drive through, Daddy asked, you want to give the order? Owen?
- 22:27Three Chiefs Burgers and three French fries, Owen said, out
- 22:30of the car window. Don't forget the milkshakes. Daddy whispered,
- 22:35and three milkshakes. On the drive home, Owen asked, can
- 22:39babies drink milkshakes? No, they aren't big enough yet, Daddy said,
- 22:45I am said Owen. At home, Mamma sat in the
- 22:48rocking chair. She was feeding the baby. I gave the
- 22:51baby duck's corn, Owen said, and I went down the
- 22:54big slide, wow said, mamma. You're growing up. Owen ordered
- 22:59cheeseburger too, Owen said, holding up the bag, and milkshakes.
- 23:03But the baby is too little for milkshakes. He added.
- 23:07I put the plates on the table, three plates. I
- 23:10think it's time for the baby's nap. Mama said, Can
- 23:14I kiss him first? Owen asked, Of course, said mama.
- 23:17Owen kissed the baby so softly. On top of his
- 23:20head three kisses. The baby didn't wake up, and Owen
- 23:24felt very grown up. Indeed, the next set of books
