- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today. We are.
- 0:32Talking about choosing our responses now.
- 0:36This is something that's very hard to do.
- 0:39I want to be very clear about this.
- 0:41This is not an easy thing to do to choose your response because
- 0:44typically when you are in a situation where you need to
- 0:47respond your first inclination. Is to just.
- 0:51Respond and that is with the emotion that is driving the bus
- 0:54in that current moment. And it may be unresourceful
- 0:57because as you were preparing that response or hearing the
- 1:01information that was being presented to you, you were
- 1:04coming up with that response already.
- 1:06It was. It was right there on the.
- 1:07Tip of. Your tongue.
- 1:08And you were? Crazy thinking about that.
- 1:12You were not thinking about all the things that you were going
- 1:16to choose. Instead you were thinking about
- 1:18whatever this person is saying. I want to.
- 1:22Come back with this. Oh yeah?
- 1:23Well, what about this? We all do it.
- 1:26It's not just you. You're not broken.
- 1:28It's something that we all do and it's a very hard thing to
- 1:31get past. Believe me when I tell you this
- 1:34is something that I struggle with too, because I am human and
- 1:37it is a very, very challenging thing to pull yourself out of
- 1:41that mode and actually choose a response.
- 1:44The key to this, in my opinion, at least for myself, and again,
- 1:47you know, I'm, I'm always trying to work with you guys on what
- 1:51works for me because if I work with what works for me, then
- 1:56it's first hand. And if it works for me and then
- 1:58it works for my clients, then I have an evidence procedure that
- 2:01shows you, hey, listen, in the real world, this is something
- 2:04that works. It's not theoretical.
- 2:05It's definitely something that works.
- 2:07So when you're talking about choosing your responses, the key
- 2:12to that one level down from that is to be in a true listening
- 2:16mode when you are hearing whatever is being presented to
- 2:19you. And often all of this is coming
- 2:21in usually under a stressful situation, whether it's just
- 2:24stress in general at work, whether it's an argument,
- 2:27whether it's something that's disrupting your world or not,
- 2:30that's typically where it's showing up.
- 2:32And then you have to make a decision at that point in time
- 2:36to listen fully, be present and fully listen so that you can
- 2:40then pause and choose your response.
- 2:43And you know, even if you're in an argument, it does not require
- 2:46an immediate response. You may feel compelled to do an
- 2:49immediate response because you're just like, I want to
- 2:53shake this person. I want to be able to get this
- 2:55person to understand my point of view.
- 2:58But everybody shows up into the arguments and the disagreements
- 3:02wanting everyone else to understand their point of view,
- 3:05you see? So it's kind of hard because
- 3:07nobody's going to give ground. It's not like there's a mediator
- 3:09sitting there taking it all in. It's usually two people having a
- 3:14disagreement, 3 people having a disagreement, whatever it might
- 3:17be. And that disagreement is
- 3:19full-fledged different points of view.
- 3:23So you have an opportunity that to stop and pause.
- 3:28You also have an opportunity to say, you know what?
- 3:30I'm not prepared to answer that right now.
- 3:32I'm not prepared to give you my opinion on that right now.
- 3:36The most important thing you can do is just pull back.
- 3:39Just pull back and say, you know what, I need some time to
- 3:42process this. And in doing that, that's the
- 3:45beginning of choosing your response and not just saying,
- 3:49hey, you know what? Well, here and then going back
- 3:52at them. And I know that's one of my
- 3:55hardest things because I already probably have been thinking
- 4:00about it as they're talking. I know I have because that's
- 4:03just how brains work. And I'm, I'm hearing every point
- 4:07and I'm like, well, here's my counterpoint, here's my
- 4:08counterpoint, here's my counterpoint.
- 4:10And in doing that, it causes even more frustration because
- 4:14they don't give a crap about your counterpoint.
- 4:16They're focused on their point and wanting to know if you heard
- 4:19their point. So it becomes a very convoluted
- 4:23situation for most of us and it becomes very hard for us to be
- 4:27able to snap ourselves out of it once it starts.
- 4:30So the key to it is always deciding to listen.
- 4:35If you know you're walking into an argument, if you know you're
- 4:37walking into a difficult situation, choose to listen 1st.
- 4:43And if you choose to listen first, then you're going to be
- 4:46in a much more of a powerful position because you're going to
- 4:49be taking in all the information.
- 4:51And quite honestly, when you're just in that listening mode,
- 4:53often what happens is you're disrupting the pattern of how
- 4:56you guys communicate. And now they don't know what to
- 4:59do. So in not knowing what to do,
- 5:02they're like, OK, and you're not responding.
- 5:05So they're like, OK, and now you have disrupted them, which is
- 5:09what's needed in order for change.
- 5:11So try this, hopefully it's helpful and I hope that you guys
- 5:16have a very blessed day. And as you can hear in the
- 5:18background, Delilah is all worked up because she's chasing
- 5:21a bug. Anyway, I hope you guys have a
- 5:25very, very blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:28Bye.
