- 0:43Thank you, Father, for giving us eternal purpose.
- 0:47And Lord, I thank you for this spoken word.
- 0:50I thank you for the Rhema today, the Logos.
- 0:53Father, I pray God that your word will read us, Lord, and
- 0:58will purify us and purge us, Lord, of all the things that
- 1:01we're holding on to. Lord, that does not belong.
- 1:04God, I pray that you'll give us a sound mind.
- 1:07I pray God you'll give a sound doctrine.
- 1:09Lord, I decrease as you increase.
- 1:12Let these words go deep down into our DNA.
- 1:16Father, I pray that they will be useful for building us up God,
- 1:20so we can build others up. God, I pray for the church at
- 1:24large. I pray for those that are being
- 1:26persecuted. Father, I pray that you will
- 1:28help them. Lord, that you will stand in the
- 1:30gap. Father, I pray that you'll use
- 1:33us, Lord, the repairers of the breach.
- 1:36God, I pray that we could stand in the gap.
- 1:39I pray that we can silence the accusations of the enemy.
- 1:42We can silence all of the lies that are coming our way way.
- 1:46Father, I pray in the name of Jesus for truth to be revealed.
- 1:51I pray in the name of Jesus for hearts to be softened and
- 1:55mended. God, I pray in the name of Jesus
- 1:57for the prodigals to come home. I pray in the name of Jesus for
- 2:01mental illness to fall off. I pray in the name of Jesus for
- 2:05addiction to fall off. God, I pray that you will give
- 2:10us the breakthrough, that you will give us the tools that we
- 2:19need to get out of the bondage that we find ourselves in.
- 2:24God that you, Lord, will be well pleased, and it'll be all about
- 2:28you, Father, about your holy name.
- 2:31Let us be holy because you are holy.
- 2:33Lord, I pray that you can show us those paths of righteousness.
- 2:38We are acknowledging You today and we are asking that you will
- 2:41lead our steps. Lord, I get out of the way and
- 2:44decrease. Holy Spirit, You teach.
- 2:48Give us the discernment to know what these words are saying and
- 2:53it's in Jesus Christ. Holy and precious name I pray,
- 2:57Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 3:02When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his
- 3:06disciples over the brook Kedron, and there was a garden into the
- 3:12which he entered and his disciples.
- 3:15So here Jesus is having to cross this brook at Kedron, and this
- 3:19would have been the stream that all of the Passover animals, the
- 3:25blood would have flowed through. This broke out of the temple
- 3:28there, and Jesus would have been reminded of why he was headed to
- 3:33Gethsemane. And we could see here that Judas
- 3:37would have known where to find him.
- 3:39And Jesus went there very intentionally, this
- 3:43intentionality of Christ, knowing that His hour had come.
- 3:49Verse 2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place,
- 3:53for Jesus oftentimes resorted there with his disciples.
- 3:58So you can see here that he was not set up in the sense that he
- 4:02was unaware of the schemes of the devil.
- 4:06He knew that Judas had been taken over by Satan and that his
- 4:13hour was short and his hour was at hand, and he knew that Judas
- 4:18would be able to find him there. Verse 3.
- 4:21Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from
- 4:26the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with
- 4:29lanterns and torches and weapons.
- 4:32So this little small army would have arrived on the scene ready
- 4:35for action, ready for any kind of hostility.
- 4:40And what they were met with is the Prince of Peace.
- 4:43For and therefore, knowing all things that should come upon
- 4:47him, Jesus went forth and said unto them, Whom do you seek?
- 4:54So look at how Jesus moved toward the enemy, moved toward
- 5:00the opposition, move toward those that would take his life
- 5:04from him. He did not shrink back.
- 5:07He was not a coward. He did not go and hide and try
- 5:10to find a way out. He moved and advanced into the
- 5:16opposition and that is our call as men, friends, we are to move
- 5:21towards the threat. We are not to shrink back.
- 5:25We are not to try to save our skin.
- 5:27We are to move and advance into the firefight, friends, and
- 5:33Jesus here the Prince of Peace, He knew that his hour had come,
- 5:38and so he moved towards opposition. 5 They answered him,
- 5:42Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am.
- 5:47And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
- 5:51As soon as he had said unto them, I am, they went backward
- 5:56and fell to the ground. So here this great I am
- 6:00statement, Jesus is pronouncing his deity.
- 6:04Jesus is announcing His messianic claim that He is an
- 6:08eternal, and that He is God, and that He is the great I am
- 6:15Yahweh. And they fell back.
- 6:18And here you can see the power that he has in just the breath
- 6:22of his mouth. You can see that it was enough
- 6:25to make this army fall to the ground backwards. 7 Then asked
- 6:31he them again, whom do you seek? And they said Jesus of Nazareth.
- 6:37So this was a cut down, this Jesus, the branch, Jesus of
- 6:40Nazareth. This was a despised town there.
- 6:44And this Nazarene sect had disturbed all of the high
- 6:51officials and all of the priests, all of the religious
- 6:56people's way of life. And Jesus was sought after
- 7:00because he was a disturbance to all of their greed and all of
- 7:05their power struggle. 8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I
- 7:12am. If therefore you seek me, let
- 7:16these go their way. So Jesus was looking after his
- 7:21band of disciples, He was looking after these men that
- 7:25turned the world right side up. And let's see how verse 9 says
- 7:31that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke of
- 7:34them which you gave me, I have lost none.
- 7:38So we know that only Judas, the son of Perdition, was the one
- 7:42who sold him out, and that he was to be lost. 10 Then Simon
- 7:48Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's
- 7:52servant and cut off his right ear.
- 7:54The servant's name was Malchus. So here Peter, in this last
- 8:00ditch effort to try and protect his Lord and master, he pulls
- 8:06the sword and strikes a servant. This was not even a soldier.
- 8:14This was not even someone that we know of to be armed.
- 8:18This was just a servant. And he probably struck him from
- 8:24behind. So this was a cowardice move by
- 8:28Peter. And it seemed as if Peter had
- 8:31all the bravado and he had just got done telling Jesus that he
- 8:36would go with him to death. And now we see that Peter is
- 8:41flailing in his action, and what does Jesus have to say?
- 8:4711 Then Jesus said unto Peter, Put up your sword into the
- 8:51sheath, the cup which my father has given me, shall I not drink
- 8:56it? So he's asking Peter, he's
- 8:58saying, don't you think that I'm supposed to do the will of my
- 9:02father? And then he tells them, We know
- 9:05in the other gospels, if you live by the sword, you will die
- 9:07by the sword. So anytime our profession
- 9:11involves a weapon, there's a great chance that that is the
- 9:15weapon that will very much take your life. 12 Then the band and
- 9:20the captain of officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him.
- 9:25So you can see here that they have him arrested. 13 They led
- 9:30him away to Anis first, for he was the father-in-law to
- 9:35Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
- 9:38So Anis was the power behind the political machine there for the
- 9:44Jews, and he had put Caiaphas, his son-in-law there as someone
- 9:50to play the part. But it was actually Anis who was
- 9:54pulling the strings and controlling things for the
- 9:57political realm there in Jerusalem. 14 Now Caiaphas was
- 10:04he which gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that
- 10:09one man should die for the people.
- 10:12So this would have seemed like he understood who Jesus was.
- 10:17But in the reality he thought that by killing Jesus they would
- 10:21be able to keep their homeland. They would be able to keep their
- 10:25country, they would be able to keep their customs, they would
- 10:28be able to keep their laws. They would be able to keep their
- 10:32autonomy there amongst the Roman government that they would get
- 10:38their special privileges. If Jesus was to die and everyone
- 10:42was to remain faithful to the Jewish laws, then they would be
- 10:47able to keep everything going. 15 And Simon Peter followed
- 10:54Jesus, and so did another disciple, and the disciple was
- 10:57known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the
- 11:01place of the high priest. So we know that this is John
- 11:04Speaking of himself, and he's talking about Peter.
- 11:08And they let John in no problem. They knew John, but they did not
- 11:12know Peter. But what is John going to do?
- 11:1616 But Peter stood at the door without, then went out that door
- 11:22the other disciple which was known unto the high priest, and
- 11:25spoke unto her, that kept the door, and brought Peter in.
- 11:29So you can see here that John goes out and he says that Peter
- 11:34is his friend, is his comrade, and he is able to go in to see
- 11:40what is going to happen to Jesus. 17 Then said the damsel
- 11:45that kept the door unto Peter, are you not one of this man's
- 11:50disciples? And he says I am not.
- 11:52That was his first denial, friends.
- 11:55He had a knee jerk reaction. And we would do well to make
- 11:59sure that whenever our faith gets tested that we actually
- 12:04passed the test, whenever someone accuses us of being a
- 12:08Christian, that we do not try to turn away from the faith or try
- 12:13to hide and then ask for forgiveness later.
- 12:16We need to be bold for our faith friends. 18 And the servants and
- 12:23officers stood there who had made a fire of coals, for it was
- 12:26cold, and they warmed themselves, and Peter stood with
- 12:30them and warmed himself. 19 The high priest then asked Jesus of
- 12:36his disciples and of his doctrine.
- 12:40So you can see here Peter's warming himself by the fire.
- 12:44You can see here that Caiaphas is wanting to know what Jesus
- 12:50has done, why he is being brought there.
- 12:53But he knows, and he's wanted him to tell on himself some
- 12:57secret sin. But Jesus was spotless and
- 13:00blameless and sinless, and he had no hold on him. 20 Jesus
- 13:07answered him. I spoke openly to the world I
- 13:11ever taught, in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jews
- 13:15always resort, and in secret I have said nothing.
- 13:19He says, You know everything that I've ever taught, because I
- 13:23have taught it publicly. 21 Why do you ask me?
- 13:30Ask them which heard me what I have said unto them.
- 13:33Behold, they know what I said. So Jesus is saying I was very
- 13:38public in everything that I had to say and all of it has been
- 13:42written down. And if you want to know, go and
- 13:45check the track record. Go and check the tape.
- 13:49You're going to see that everything is congruent and
- 13:53falls together. Everything is fluid, and I have
- 13:56no deception in me and no sin. 22 And when he had thus spoken,
- 14:02one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of
- 14:06his hand, saying, Answer you the high priest so.
- 14:11So this soldier here, this officer has slapped him with the
- 14:19force of a punch. He has open handedly punched him
- 14:24in the face. And then what does Jesus say?
- 14:27In 23 Jesus answered him. If I have spoken evil, bear
- 14:32witness of the evil. But if well, why do you strike
- 14:35me? So Jesus is saying, if I've done
- 14:38something wrong, tell me what I've done wrong.
- 14:41But if I have not done anything wrong, why have you struck me?
- 14:47Can you imagine? This is the hostility of mankind
- 14:50towards God. Can you imagine?
- 14:54We just want to be our own God. We don't want the list of rules
- 14:59that God tells us to play by. We want our own playground.
- 15:04We want to build our own Kingdom.
- 15:07And that is the hostility here in this moment. 24 Now Anna had
- 15:15sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. 25 And Simon Peter
- 15:21stood and warmed himself, and said Therefore unto him.
- 15:25They said unto him, Are you not also one of his disciples?
- 15:30He denied it and said I am not. So this is his second denial
- 15:35here, friends, he's saying no. 26 one of the servants of the
- 15:40high priest, being his kinsman, whose ear Peter had cut off,
- 15:45said, Did I not see you in the garden with him?
- 15:4927 Peter then denied again immediately, the cock crew, The
- 15:56rooster crowed. And you can see here that this
- 16:01was the third denial, and Jesus prophesied about it.
- 16:05He predicted it, friends. And Peter here immediately knew
- 16:11when he heard the rooster crow that all of Jesus's words had
- 16:16been fulfilled. And Jesus looks at him in the
- 16:19face, and Peter weeps bitterly. 28 Then LED they Jesus from
- 16:26Caiaphas, into the Hall of judgement, and it was early, and
- 16:30they themselves went not into the judgement hall, lest they
- 16:34should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.
- 16:38So here all of their legal requirements for their Passover
- 16:44was being fulfilled, but they were murdering the one who gave
- 16:48those requirements that pointed them to himself, and they did
- 16:53not see it. Their hypocrisy got the best of
- 16:56them, their pride got the best of them, and they missed it.
- 17:00And we would miss it too whenever we think there are
- 17:04other ways unto God. When it we would miss it too
- 17:07whenever we just think that Jesus is a moral teacher.
- 17:10We would miss it too, whenever we do not believe that Jesus is
- 17:14the only way unto the Father. And you can see here that there
- 17:19are other legal procedures with Annis and Caiaphas were illegal.
- 17:23It must be done in the day. So now they've already made
- 17:27their decision to put him to death.
- 17:29And so now they're trying to get Rome to do their dirty work. 29
- 17:36Pilot then went out unto them and said, What accusation do you
- 17:41bring against this man? 30 They answered and said unto
- 17:45him, If he were not a malefactor, we would have, we
- 17:48would not have delivered him up to you.
- 17:50They're saying, what do you? Are you calling our judgment
- 17:53into judgment? Are you trying to accuse us of
- 18:01not knowing how to rightfully judge this man?
- 18:06And so here they were trying to throw off the fact that they
- 18:11were being deceptive and deceitful and trying to murder
- 18:16an innocent man. 30 31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take you him,
- 18:28and judge him according to your law.
- 18:31The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to
- 18:34put any man to death, much less an innocent man.
- 18:40Here this High Court of the Jews had all of these legal
- 18:49requirements of why somebody should be put to death, and
- 18:54Jesus did not fit any of them and they knew it.
- 18:58It was out of envy that they murdered him, and Pilate saw
- 19:02right through it 32 that the saying of Jesus might be
- 19:08fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what death he should
- 19:12die. So here you can see it was not
- 19:15enough for Pilate just to flog him, that he told them that he
- 19:19would be delivered unto sinful man and be crucified.
- 19:23But on the third day rise. 33 Then Pilate entered into the
- 19:29judgment hall again and called Jesus and said unto him, Are you
- 19:33the king of the Jews? So here he's saying you, you're
- 19:37the king. What does Jesus say?
- 19:4134 Jesus answered and said, You say this thing.
- 19:46Do you say this thing of yourself or did others tell it
- 19:50to you of me? So here Jesus is wanting to
- 19:55know, did you come up to this conclusion or did somebody else
- 20:00put you up to it? 35 Pilot answered.
- 20:04Am IA Jew. Your own nation and the chief
- 20:08priests have delivered you unto me.
- 20:12What have you done? So here Pilate is wanting to try
- 20:17to figure out why is this innocent man who has done
- 20:21nothing wrong being railed at and they're shouting to crucify
- 20:29him when he has lived a perfect, sinless life.
- 20:35And Pilate wants to know. 36 Jesus answered, My Kingdom is
- 20:45not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this
- 20:48world, then would my servants fight that I should not be
- 20:52delivered to the Jews? But now is my Kingdom not from
- 20:57here? So you can see here that Jesus
- 20:59knew that he was from the Father and he was going to the Father.
- 21:03He knew that he had legions of angels at his disposal.
- 21:07He knew that just with the breath of his mouth the chains
- 21:10could fall off. He could be a free man, He knew
- 21:13it. But he willfully went to the
- 21:15slaughter. He willfully stayed silent. 37
- 21:20Pilate therefore said unto him, Are you a king?
- 21:24Then Jesus answered, You say that I am a king.
- 21:31To this end I was born, and for this, 'cause I came into the
- 21:36world, that I should bear witness unto truth, Everyone
- 21:40that is of the truth hears my voice.
- 21:43So he's saying, his sheep hear his voice.
- 21:46He is the Good Shepherd, He is the truth. 38 Pilot said unto
- 21:55him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he
- 21:59went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in
- 22:03him no fault at all. Jesus was perfect.
- 22:07Jesus was sinless. Jesus never had to ask for an
- 22:10apology. You can see here that through
- 22:13all of the wisest, smartest counsel, there was no fault
- 22:17found in Jesus Christ. 39 But you have a custom that I should
- 22:24release unto you one at the Passover.
- 22:27Will you, therefore that I release unto you the king of the
- 22:31Jews? 40 Then cried, They all saying,
- 22:36not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
- 22:43I hope that you can identify yourself as Barabbas.
- 22:49I am Barabbas, I'm a robber. I'm an insurrectionist.
- 22:54I am a murderer, and I desperately needed Jesus to die
- 23:01in my stead. Look at how Pilot here is
- 23:06completely confounded by the notion that they would ask for a
- 23:13murderer instead of this innocent man that he could find
- 23:16no fault in. And he knew it was envy,
- 23:20friends. He was able to see through it
- 23:22all and he was hoping that there was some way that he could let
- 23:27this innocent man out of there. His wife had already told him to
- 23:31not have anything to do with him, for she had suffered in a
- 23:34dream because of this man. And you can see here that Jesus
- 23:39had opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to
- 23:44get out of it. He could have called down
- 23:47legions of angels. He should have come down and
- 23:51proved his messianic claims. But he didn't because he knew
- 23:59what he was doing. He knew that this was going to
- 24:02disarm all of evil and darkness and death could have no claim on
- 24:08us, friends. And Jesus won the victory,
- 24:12friends, and took a victory lap, friends, and LED a procession
- 24:16out of Abraham's bosom and closed that down.
- 24:21We can see here that there's so much truth in this one chapter.
- 24:25I hope you've been blessed by it.
- 24:27I know I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 24:30of you. I love you.
- 24:31We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 24:34God bless you.
