- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Letterbox broadcast, the place
- 0:03where real people write the letters that they've written
- 0:06about the things that mean the most to them.
- 0:09Wherever it is that you are today.
- 0:12Thank you so much for joining us for the third letter in our
- 0:16seven day miniseries for Niku Awareness Month.
- 0:20If you are just joining us for the first time today, I'd really
- 0:24encourage you to go back and listen to the first two of
- 0:27Catherine's letters. Together they begin to tell a
- 0:30story that is impossible to capture in just one letter.
- 0:35Today's is to the person who was beside Catherine throughout all
- 0:40of it, her husband. Before I press play on Catherine
- 0:48reading this very personal love letter to her husband, I would
- 0:53just like to ask a favour of you and that is to press the follow
- 0:57button wherever it is you are listening today.
- 0:59It's the best way that you can support the broadcast and it
- 1:01will help Catherine's letters reach as many people as
- 1:04possible. But for now, make yourself comfy
- 1:09and let's listen to Catherine's letter to her husband.
- 1:16Dear husband, when we married we were 3010 years in university,
- 1:23first homes, postgraduate degrees, doctorate's jobs, all
- 1:27done together and life was good. Then eventually we had our
- 1:32children and it was a whirlwind wasn't it that first one?
- 1:37What a wonderful boy. But my God, how he rocked our
- 1:42world. So when she came along, our
- 1:46beautiful, tenacious, wonderful girl, even with all her
- 1:51challenges and difficulties, we did it, didn't we?
- 1:54Because we knew what to do. We'd done this before and we
- 1:58knew that any mistakes would probably be OK because we were
- 2:02raising such a fantastic boy. So we couldn't have got it that
- 2:06wrong. I didn't know our vows would
- 2:09mean in sickness and in health of our children.
- 2:13It's not what you prepare for. And I can't really say this out
- 2:17loud because it breaks me. It's not what those vows are
- 2:20meant to mean. It's hard enough to imagine in
- 2:23sickness and in health for each other, but when it's your tiny
- 2:27babies, the little people you made together, the people you
- 2:30would do absolutely anything to protect, hearts break harder.
- 2:36I couldn't have done this with anybody else.
- 2:40And for all the arguments about the washing and whose turn it is
- 2:44and the state of the house and who should be playing with which
- 2:47child and what needs doing when, I wouldn't have picked it any
- 2:51other way. Because we didn't argue through
- 2:54this, did we? We became a team in a way I
- 2:58don't think either of us could have imagined.
- 3:01I felt so united with you, so held, so supported.
- 3:09I'm glad I'm saying this letter before I write it down, because
- 3:12if I wrote it first, the ink would be falling and spilling
- 3:15everywhere. There would be tears all over
- 3:18the page. Because we don't have much time
- 3:21with these two little crazy people to sit down and say these
- 3:25things to each other, do we? But you deserve to know.
- 3:30Thank you for making those vows, and for sticking so honourably
- 3:37to them when they became something neither of us had ever
- 3:40expected or banked upon. Thank you for being an
- 3:43unwavering support for our boy, for me, for her.
- 3:49Thank you for loving our children so fiercely and for
- 3:53loving me. There were times when I saw you
- 3:57so sad, so nearly broken, and I'm sorry for that.
- 4:00I'm sorry that this happened to you too, because sometimes in
- 4:07the middle of everything, it was easy to forget that you were
- 4:10frightened too. That you were watching your baby
- 4:12go through something terrible, that you were trying to be
- 4:16strong for all of us. And I know there's pain
- 4:19underneath this for us, and I know that there are memories and
- 4:22things we've seen that will stay with us forever.
- 4:25I know it's changed us. But even with all of that, I
- 4:30think we're so lucky. Our children are so beautiful,
- 4:35and I'm so grateful for you for making them with me.
- 4:39And then somehow we started talking about another child,
- 4:43crazy, another little person to come and make this crazy house
- 4:48even louder, even more chaotic, even more overstimulating.
- 4:53And I think that tells me something.
- 4:56After everything we've seen, we haven't become afraid of love.
- 5:01If anything, we've become more certain of it.
- 5:05I suppose we're not out the other side, not really.
- 5:10Maybe we're just in a quieter part of this storm.
- 5:14But whatever comes next, I want to face it with you.
- 5:17Because I love you. And the fact that after
- 5:21everything, we can still imagine another little person joining
- 5:25this family tells me how loving you are.
- 5:28It confirms it. My goodness, what a lucky family
- 5:34we are to hold. So much love.
- 5:37I just don't know how I could have done this without you.
- 5:41Thank you for holding me through all of it.
- 5:45Thank you, husband. Thank you so much, Catherine,
- 5:52for such a beautiful, beautiful letter.
- 5:56It feels very special to hear somebody talking about their
- 5:59relationship and talking about the love and strength within it
- 6:03because there is no doubt that there were incredibly
- 6:06challenging times. So the fact that you were able
- 6:08to find such love and teamwork throughout it is incredibly
- 6:13special. And your children are very lucky
- 6:16that their parents love each other so much.
- 6:18So thank you again for reading so beautifully.
- 6:22Such a special, special part of your journey for us today.
- 6:29Like I said earlier, if you haven't already listened to the
- 6:321st 2 letters, please do go back and listen to them.
- 6:35They're all part of the same story and each letter reveals
- 6:38another piece of what this family lived through.
- 6:42And there are still 4 letters to come, so please do follow the
- 6:48letterbox forecast wherever you are listening so you don't miss
- 6:50tomorrow's letter. And join me again as Catherine
- 6:53continues her story. Her social media is tagged in
- 6:57the show notes, so please do go and check out her page.
- 7:01Until tomorrow, all my love Lucy.
