- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome to the Return to Glory Podcast!
- 0:24Speaker 4: Return to Glory Podcast, Hunter Zabernicki, Dakota Free Tag, with
- 0:30Speaker 4: you this morning.
- 0:31Speaker 2: This one, it hurts. Dak, you're here with a big
- 0:35Speaker 2: smile this morning. This one hurts. Yeah, it hurts.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But the farther away I get from the game, the
- 0:43Speaker 1: less hurt there is and more of a, damn, this
- 0:48Speaker 1: team is good feeling.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, opportunity missed. We had an opportunity to
- 0:53Speaker 4: beat the defending national champs. I mean, you've heard all
- 0:56Speaker 4: the numbers.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And for.
- 1:00Speaker 4: A big part of Saturday, we looked like we were
- 1:04Speaker 4: capable of doing that. And then, once again, we were
- 1:11Speaker 4: unable to finish the game off. And, obviously, fell to
- 1:17Speaker 4: the Indiana Hoosiers 20-17.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Nebraska goes to 5-1 on the year. And what you said,
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:27Speaker 4: As we talk about the game today, both reactions belong
- 1:30Speaker 4: in the conversation of being frustrated, being disappointed, but also
- 1:39Speaker 4: there's a lot of positives that we'll get to here
- 1:41Speaker 4: as well. And yes, it's been two nights of sleep
- 1:44Speaker 4: on it. Your thoughts are going to change overall, but
- 1:50Speaker 4: it just was an opportunity that was missed. in my mind,
- 1:55Speaker 4: that it was right there for the taking, and it just, ugh,
- 2:00Speaker 4: it hurts.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It hurts.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It hurts. Yeah, and I've been listening to other podcasts, too,
- 2:06Speaker 1: leading up to this. What also hurts is just how
- 2:09Speaker 1: much we dominated that stat line. It was just four
- 2:13Speaker 1: big plays that they had on us that killed us,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and again, it's just keep that streak going. What is it,
- 2:20Speaker 1: 33 now straight losses to ranked teams? Something like that. Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it's crazy. And, of course, now Oregon's not ranked because
- 2:29Speaker 1: we are going to kick their ass. But, anyway, yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: so that won't even count for a ranked win right there. But, yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's crazy how much– even we can't even beat like
- 2:40Speaker 1: a– we've never beat like a team that's ranked 21
- 2:43Speaker 1: or something like that. It's just crazy.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Yeah, before kickoff, if you had asked me, I mean,
- 2:50Speaker 4: my honest score prediction I had, I was 34-17. I just,
- 2:55Speaker 4: I didn't think, I just, I still didn't, I know
- 2:59Speaker 4: Indiana hasn't been, well, they haven't played a whole lot either,
- 3:02Speaker 4: but maybe isn't what they used to be and all
- 3:04Speaker 4: of that. I just, last year anyways, I should say
- 3:08Speaker 4: used to be what they were last year. I just
- 3:11Speaker 4: don't think, I didn't think that we were there.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Clearly we were.
- 3:17Speaker 4: And once we started that game and we were well
- 3:19Speaker 4: always into the game, you're going, whoa, like, This could happen.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And I almost did, except for a few big plays
- 3:29Speaker 4: like you mentioned. So, like, I do think, obviously, that
- 3:34Speaker 4: the scoreboard was the way it was. You look at
- 3:36Speaker 4: the stats. I mean, you mentioned it. That tells a
- 3:40Speaker 4: big story if you're looking at that and you're going,
- 3:42Speaker 4: how does Nebraska lose this game if you're looking at,
- 3:47Speaker 4: 392 yards against 328. The time of possession, the huge one.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's... You know, 39 to 21. That's the one.
- 3:58Speaker 1: That hurts the most, but.
- 4:01Speaker 4: The third down conversions, 10 of 19 versus 1 of 10.
- 4:05Speaker 2: They're rushing yards. Like, they had 65 rushing yards yesterday.
- 4:14Speaker 4: That's, I mean, that, that you look at those stats
- 4:16Speaker 4: and you're like, man, Nebraska, we were in control of
- 4:19Speaker 4: the entire game. Unfortunately, control does not equal winning all
- 4:27Speaker 4: the time.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah. What you just said there is one of the
- 4:32Speaker 1: main reasons why I am, I'm walking out thinking that
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm impressed with how we played. Stopping their run game
- 4:40Speaker 1: like we did, so impressive. Like, That whole game, they
- 4:44Speaker 1: had nothing on their ground game at all, which that
- 4:48Speaker 1: was easily our game plan coming in. But, man, was
- 4:51Speaker 1: I impressed with our run defense. They were hitting them,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and they were swarming, too. That was the main thing is.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Just because you can tell their main emphasis was Maryland
- 4:58Speaker 1: got those corners a lot on us. Indiana was trying
- 5:00Speaker 1: to get those corners, but we were not letting that happen.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Very impressed with our D-line and our defense in general, too.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so, again, a lot of good. I– think that
- 5:15Speaker 4: you know that you obviously hear the good stats if
- 5:17Speaker 4: you look at the yards per play which we talk
- 5:19Speaker 4: about a lot on this podcast the big stat matters
- 5:22Speaker 4: that we didn't win that right we were I think 4.7
- 5:25Speaker 4: yards play they were 7.5 uh that the big thing
- 5:30Speaker 4: I think that.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I'm encouraged about moving forward.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Is we finally are if you take a step back
- 5:40Speaker 4: and look at where things have been and where things
- 5:43Speaker 4: are at now. We are getting so much closer to
- 5:46Speaker 4: playing a style of football that is truly complimentary and
- 5:51Speaker 4: not beating yourself. And on top of that, the game
- 5:56Speaker 4: plan coming into this game, like I expected coming into
- 5:59Speaker 4: this game getting outcoached by Kurt Cignetti for four quarters,
- 6:02Speaker 4: and I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. We outcoached
- 6:05Speaker 4: him for three of the four quarters, for sure two
- 6:08Speaker 4: of the four quarters, and he came back and obviously
- 6:11Speaker 4: had the adjustments. Like, we had the better game plan
- 6:14Speaker 4: coming in. We controlled the game the way that we
- 6:18Speaker 4: wanted to play it, which is, again, playing a national
- 6:21Speaker 4: title team, defending national title team.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Like, you didn't expect that.
- 6:26Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And we did.
- 6:28Speaker 4: And then, obviously, the adjustments got made, second half, and
- 6:34Speaker 4: we didn't end up winning the game. And we'll go
- 6:37Speaker 4: back and Signetti said it too in his post game.
- 6:41Speaker 4: We want a bunch of games like this teams that
- 6:43Speaker 4: know how to win, know how to win and, and
- 6:45Speaker 4: who care, you know, don't care about the numbers. Don't
- 6:47Speaker 4: care about how it happened. But if you, if you
- 6:50Speaker 4: find a way to win the game, you find a
- 6:51Speaker 4: way to win the game. And that's what Indiana did
- 6:54Speaker 4: against us. So yes, they still get credit.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:57Speaker 4: We dominated a lot of that game, but the way
- 7:01Speaker 4: the game ended, it's still what matters. And nobody's going
- 7:04Speaker 4: to remember a close Nebraska loss. in the big picture,
- 7:09Speaker 4: grand scheme of things. Obviously, unless we were on the table.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Well, then, yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 4: But, you know, Indiana is going to be pretty easily
- 7:18Speaker 4: forgotten because they still won the game.
- 7:21Speaker 1: We had, we also had Zignetti kind of in a
- 7:24Speaker 1: spin tackle there in that first half, too. There was,
- 7:26Speaker 1: for sure, three times where they were going to go
- 7:28Speaker 1: on fourth down and they thought about it for a
- 7:30Speaker 1: while and then they punted back to us. They used
- 7:31Speaker 1: all three of their timeouts that first half. Like, he was,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we had him thinking really hard there. You could tell
- 7:37Speaker 1: So he's like, crap, we can't give this team back
- 7:39Speaker 1: the ball. But then, yeah, he didn't know what he
- 7:42Speaker 1: wanted to do there for a little bit.
- 7:45Speaker 4: During the game, we were playing like Iowa, right? Archie
- 7:49Speaker 4: had some good punts. We just were controlling the field position.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I think, you know, talk about moments that change the game.
- 8:00Speaker 4: For the most part, we had field position on our side.
- 8:05Speaker 4: It was these big plays that Kind of changed the game.
- 8:08Speaker 4: And I've heard a lot of people obviously be upset
- 8:11Speaker 4: with the long passes. We can't give up big plays.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I guess I want to defend the coaching staff a
- 8:19Speaker 4: little bit because going into the game, if you're watching
- 8:23Speaker 4: a little bit of film on them, and I know
- 8:25Speaker 4: a lot of people don't, I don't expect you to,
- 8:26Speaker 4: but I don't usually either. But as I was watching them,
- 8:30Speaker 4: I'm just like, they are so good against Northwestern, against Rutgers,
- 8:35Speaker 4: at just... casually going down the field, dinking and dunking,
- 8:40Speaker 4: waiting for the other team to do something stupid. And
- 8:44Speaker 4: they're okay with doing that. They're okay with a five-yard pass,
- 8:48Speaker 4: a five-yard hitch. They're okay with getting four yards of carry.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I like that offense too.
- 8:52Speaker 2: By the way. And what we did was.
- 8:57Speaker 4: We came out and played a lot of press coverage
- 9:00Speaker 4: on the outside so they couldn't get quick short passes, which,
- 9:03Speaker 4: by the way, people, You got to keep everybody always complains.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. Why are DB so far off?
- 9:10Speaker 4: Like that didn't happen. So with football, my point in
- 9:16Speaker 4: all this on these big plays is. Yes, I wish
- 9:19Speaker 4: they didn't happen, but. In any in scheming and when
- 9:24Speaker 4: you're trying to take something away, you're also exposing yourself
- 9:28Speaker 4: to a to a risk on the other side. and
- 9:31Speaker 4: that's a lot of just coaching and strategizing with anything
- 9:34Speaker 4: in life, really, right? You want to take one side
- 9:37Speaker 4: and do something really well.
- 9:39Speaker 2: What was that?
- 9:40Speaker 4: We stopped the run. That's what we were trying to
- 9:42Speaker 4: do a lot. We were putting more guys in the box.
- 9:44Speaker 4: We were not letting them go. You're a little bit more,
- 9:51Speaker 4: you're exposed a little bit more to these big plays. Now,
- 9:54Speaker 4: that's the strategy you chose to take, and it worked
- 9:58Speaker 4: for a lot of the game. So, yes, you talk
- 10:01Speaker 4: about the individual plays. Yeah, they're frustrating. Maybe the blown coverage.
- 10:08Speaker 4: The long pass right after he took the lead 17-6. Like,
- 10:14Speaker 4: that's frustrating, but that also was part of the game plan.
- 10:17Speaker 4: And it just happened that they... They busted a couple through. Like,
- 10:23Speaker 4: that to me, like, yes, I'm upset. I wish those
- 10:25Speaker 4: didn't happen. And actually, what I wish we would have
- 10:28Speaker 4: done is actually adjusted after we went up 17-6, actually
- 10:31Speaker 4: went and played like Rutgers and Northwestern and give them
- 10:35Speaker 4: a little bit more room. Because then we had the game.
- 10:38Speaker 4: We were in control of the game. But, I mean,
- 10:41Speaker 4: we stuck to it, right?
- 10:42Speaker 2: We stuck to the game plan and what we did
- 10:47Speaker 2: because it was working. What?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Exactly right there is what national– I'm not saying they're
- 10:52Speaker 1: winning this year, but they're playing national champs right there.
- 10:55Speaker 1: They make plays when plays need to be made to
- 10:59Speaker 1: win these games. Like, sure, they look like crap for
- 11:03Speaker 1: 80% of the game, I would say, but they just
- 11:06Speaker 1: have four or five plays every game. When they have
- 11:09Speaker 1: to go get the win, they get the win. And
- 11:11Speaker 1: that's what they do that game against us. Yeah, on
- 11:15Speaker 1: that freaking long pass play, after everyone knows that when
- 11:18Speaker 1: the Calendars are on, That one really hurt. Yeah, I
- 11:20Speaker 1: don't know why we didn't, like you said, let them
- 11:24Speaker 1: just go ding and dunk down the field. Use that clock.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Who cares if they score, but it takes five, six
- 11:29Speaker 1: minutes to get on the field instead of one big play.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I'll tell you why we didn't, because what we've been
- 11:31Speaker 4: doing the whole game was we were dominating Indiana with
- 11:34Speaker 4: how we were playing.
- 11:35Speaker 2: That's why we didn't.
- 11:36Speaker 4: It's hard to go away from something that was working,
- 11:42Speaker 4: and it's really hard to do. Again, it would have
- 11:45Speaker 4: been nice to do that, but yeah, that's why we didn't.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Do you know one big play, though, that a lot
- 11:52Speaker 1: of people really aren't talking about that? I think I'm
- 11:54Speaker 1: looking back on it. Why did we do this? I mean,
- 11:56Speaker 1: now I'd probably be saying, great call if we got it.
- 11:59Speaker 1: But that fourth and nine, we should have punted that
- 12:02Speaker 1: ball back to him because it ended up killing us
- 12:04Speaker 1: on our field position after that. I think we should
- 12:07Speaker 1: have punted that ball in dumb field position because we
- 12:09Speaker 1: ended up stopping three and out, but then they put
- 12:11Speaker 1: us back on the five-yard line.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, ifs and ifs. I mean, you're taking a chance there.
- 12:18Speaker 2: You get the first down.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I just thought fourth and nine was a little bit
- 12:20Speaker 1: too long.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You get the first down, you're being a genius.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I thought fourth and nine was a little bit too
- 12:25Speaker 1: long in this situation. I think there were still four
- 12:26Speaker 1: minutes left. I probably wouldn't have gone for it. I mean,
- 12:30Speaker 1: hindsight is 20-20. They didn't get it. But, yeah, I
- 12:35Speaker 1: did not like that call in the moment there. But, again,
- 12:37Speaker 1: looking back, we were probably like, well, this is the game.
- 12:40Speaker 1: We got to get this. We're not stopping them again.
- 12:41Speaker 1: We did. But then they gave us the ball back
- 12:44Speaker 1: on the five-yard line, so we had to go 95 yards. So,
- 12:46Speaker 1: tough call right there, I thought.
- 12:50Speaker 4: We talked a lot about, you know, the defense and
- 12:52Speaker 4: this couple of big plays. I, I mean, sticking on
- 12:55Speaker 4: this side of the ball, I'm just going to react,
- 12:57Speaker 4: repeat and echo what I said. I, I am very
- 13:02Speaker 4: impressed with how we stopped their run game. I mean, it,
- 13:06Speaker 4: that's a team that, that is their, that is exactly
- 13:09Speaker 4: what they want to do.
- 13:10Speaker 2: And they, I mean, I don't know. I think they
- 13:12Speaker 2: finished with 37 yards rushing. Right. And there were two
- 13:15Speaker 2: running backs that were supposed to be very good.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Like we, we def, The scheme, the guys rallying to
- 13:21Speaker 4: the ball, loading the ball, all of that was phenomenal.
- 13:24Speaker 4: I give a lot of credit to Rob Orch and
- 13:27Speaker 4: what he did with his game plan coming.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Into this game.
- 13:31Speaker 4: It's pretty damn impressive. And yes, again, it took giving
- 13:38Speaker 4: up a couple less big plays to win this game.
- 13:42Speaker 4: And to beat a really, really good team like this,
- 13:47Speaker 4: that stuff kind of does the end. Now, the really
- 13:52Speaker 4: bright side of this, defense specifically, that was a big,
- 13:57Speaker 4: to me, question mark coming in. I was concerned because
- 14:02Speaker 4: this is a team in Indiana that.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Is very balanced.
- 14:07Speaker 4: They have multiple weapons on both ends of their lines
- 14:11Speaker 4: really good, so I was a little bit concerned that
- 14:15Speaker 4: we weren't going to be able to put together a
- 14:17Speaker 4: game plan to stop what they were wanting to do. Well,
- 14:19Speaker 4: we identified that as a coaching staff and took that away.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Was it enough? No, but it was pretty damn good.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Now, why that's promising is if you can do that
- 14:28Speaker 4: against Indiana, you should be sitting pretty well defensively as
- 14:37Speaker 4: we play some of these other teams here, including Oregon
- 14:40Speaker 4: next week. But just as we move forward, If you
- 14:44Speaker 4: can defend Indiana with some of the pieces they have
- 14:46Speaker 4: and the coaching and all of that, as long as
- 14:50Speaker 4: the guys and everybody still is rallying and believing and
- 14:53Speaker 4: the momentum still, I mean, you should be sitting pretty
- 14:58Speaker 4: good when we play some of these games coming up here.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I said at the beginning of this podcast, even
- 15:04Speaker 1: if our guys got there, the first, the first hit there, there,
- 15:06Speaker 1: there was three guys behind him there to back up
- 15:08Speaker 1: at their tackle too. Like we weren't, even they break
- 15:10Speaker 1: that first tackle. There's three other guys sitting there waiting
- 15:12Speaker 1: to hit. I'm like swarm tackling. I thought was just amazing.
- 15:15Speaker 1: That game, except for the course I'd want to be,
- 15:18Speaker 1: but the only time they really got running, which he's,
- 15:21Speaker 1: he hasn't ran much coming in the year was Hoover
- 15:23Speaker 1: had a couple of big runs where, well, I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 1: the field just sold them for me. I had to
- 15:27Speaker 1: take off and run. I think it was a good 10,
- 15:29Speaker 1: 15 yards. He had two or three of them. But
- 15:31Speaker 1: other than that, There's nothing on that ground game at
- 15:33Speaker 1: all for him. And I think that's what got Stigne like, oh, crap,
- 15:38Speaker 1: what are we going.
- 15:38Speaker 3: To do here?
- 15:38Speaker 1: And then he adjusted, and that's what happens there. But
- 15:43Speaker 1: just so impressed with him. Again, like you said, coming
- 15:46Speaker 1: into this game, still a question mark, especially the way
- 15:49Speaker 1: Maryland ran on us, and we haven't played anyone yet.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Still a big question mark there. Like, oh, man, is
- 15:55Speaker 1: our defense going to get shredded this game?
- 15:57Speaker 2: No.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I think that's something that we're coming out now confident.
- 16:00Speaker 1: We're like, holy crap. We got a damn good defense
- 16:03Speaker 1: and that's especially in big 10. If you can stop
- 16:07Speaker 1: the run game, that's, I think that's goal number one,
- 16:10Speaker 1: the big 10, every team, most teams, the big 10
- 16:14Speaker 1: want to run that ball. And we can stop that
- 16:16Speaker 1: on teams, make these quarter. There's shitty. I'm just a
- 16:19Speaker 1: few quarterbacks all over the big 10, make these guys
- 16:21Speaker 1: throw the ball. I think we're sitting in a great spot.
- 16:25Speaker 4: I flip it over to the other side of the
- 16:27Speaker 4: ball here that, the moment that everybody's mentioned and it
- 16:33Speaker 4: talks about is the Calandria scramble touchdown that made the
- 16:38Speaker 4: game 17 to six. And like, I said it right
- 16:41Speaker 4: after too, you know, at the Heisman moment right there.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yep. Now, now it's not going to be remembered cause
- 16:47Speaker 2: you didn't win the game. Right.
- 16:48Speaker 4: But like you, you, you, you win the game and you,
- 16:51Speaker 4: and yet, and that, that's, that's obviously a huge moment.
- 16:56Speaker 4: And it was like it, The offense did a lot
- 16:59Speaker 4: of really good things early on. Again, first half, we
- 17:04Speaker 4: came in with a game plan that was out scheming them.
- 17:07Speaker 2: We outcoached them.
- 17:08Speaker 4: We were getting the stuff that we identified on film
- 17:12Speaker 4: that was there. And on top of that, you want
- 17:15Speaker 4: to talk about the Calandria run game, both designed and scrambling.
- 17:20Speaker 2: It's just, it's impressive. It's incredible.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Oh, God, it's amazing.
- 17:23Speaker 4: I still just keep hearing the comments and the people
- 17:25Speaker 4: talk about how he's going to get hurt.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Like, He might, guys, he might get hurt.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I get it, but you can't let this fire in
- 17:37Speaker 4: how he plays.
- 17:38Speaker 2: It's more than just that single play that he's doing.
- 17:41Speaker 4: It's igniting. It's the way that he plays. It's his charisma.
- 17:45Speaker 4: All that stuff, that's what is defining your offense and
- 17:50Speaker 4: how you're playing and your style. All that goes into it.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I get it.
- 17:54Speaker 4: People are concerned about him getting hurt, and he might
- 17:56Speaker 4: get hurt. If he gets hurt, he gets hurt, but
- 17:59Speaker 4: The way he plays, he's our playmaker, right? We got
- 18:03Speaker 4: to let him make plays and how he does that.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And, you know, he did that.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Now, the second part of that is how Indiana adjusted
- 18:14Speaker 4: to what we were doing there. And after that touchdown,
- 18:20Speaker 4: I know that wasn't the second half. Actually, it was
- 18:23Speaker 4: in the beginning of the fourth quarter. After that, we
- 18:27Speaker 4: still had three drives after Indiana took the lead, and
- 18:31Speaker 4: we still didn't score.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Got sacked.
- 18:34Speaker 4: There was negative plays, and Indiana adjusted, right? They didn't
- 18:40Speaker 4: let him make the plays that he makes, and we
- 18:46Speaker 4: obviously couldn't really ever establish the running back run game
- 18:49Speaker 4: much at all again this game.
- 18:51Speaker 2: There were some good pieces here and there. Like, I.
- 18:54Speaker 4: I, they, they, again, they, they adjusted well enough. So like, again,
- 18:58Speaker 4: a lot of, a lot of it was really, really good,
- 18:59Speaker 4: but it wasn't enough to win the game.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Here's one big dress, man. I noticed watching that game was, uh,
- 19:05Speaker 1: we were kind of killing them on this league. Uh,
- 19:08Speaker 1: Luke Lindemeyer would sneak out and get like these, he'd
- 19:11Speaker 1: just break out there, get to like these five, 10 yard,
- 19:14Speaker 1: easy catches, catch and run Indiana. That whole fourth quarter
- 19:17Speaker 1: was just bought. We tried going back to that about
- 19:19Speaker 1: two or three more times. And they just bought that
- 19:21Speaker 1: play up completely. That was, I think that was a
- 19:24Speaker 1: huge adjustment because that play was killing him. It would
- 19:26Speaker 1: take about five or 10 seconds to develop. And then boom,
- 19:28Speaker 1: he'd be sneaking out there. Five, easy time, five, 10
- 19:31Speaker 1: year pass. Another thing. I think that we adjusted well
- 19:37Speaker 1: on Indiana was like, quasi Gilmore is not going to
- 19:39Speaker 1: beat us this game. So what do we do? We
- 19:41Speaker 1: went in Isaiah Hunter quite a bit. And Jacory Barney
- 19:44Speaker 1: had a fantastic game. That guy. I didn't know how
- 19:48Speaker 1: good his hands work. He, made some great contested catches
- 19:52Speaker 1: amazing game by barney and and isaiah we got going
- 19:55Speaker 1: a little bit on those jet sweeps too running around
- 19:57Speaker 1: there so again lindemeyer hunter and barney going this game
- 20:01Speaker 1: i think was a great adjustment by us because because
- 20:04Speaker 1: we know it's pretty early gilmore's gonna get shut down
- 20:06Speaker 1: this game.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, that's part of the coaching. I think
- 20:10Speaker 4: you identify that, how Indiana's going to guard. And again,
- 20:15Speaker 4: I think we had a really– God, we had a
- 20:17Speaker 4: good game plan going into the game.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Cignetti's obviously just a damn good coach. And that coaching
- 20:23Speaker 4: staff and players, they adjusted well. Again, opportunity missed, it sucks.
- 20:27Speaker 4: It hurts because it was there for the taking. But
- 20:33Speaker 4: it's got to give you a lot of hope here.
- 20:35Speaker 4: as we keep going, as long as everybody stays bought
- 20:38Speaker 4: into what we're doing. The other play, I guess that
- 20:41Speaker 4: we haven't mentioned yet either is right before half. That
- 20:43Speaker 4: was pretty costly.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Missed them. The missed field goal.
- 20:47Speaker 4: It would have been nice score touchdown on that drive too,
- 20:49Speaker 4: but the missed field goal right before half.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Right. There's what championship teams do. You don't miss that
- 20:53Speaker 1: field goal. Cause you know, it's going to come back
- 20:55Speaker 1: to bite you. And what the score ended up being
- 20:56Speaker 1: lost by three.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:57Speaker 2: That's huge. It does.
- 21:00Speaker 4: And I know that everybody said, you make that field goal.
- 21:02Speaker 2: We're going to overtime. Like, no, yes and no.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Like, Yeah, I mean, it could change totally.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Obviously, it's worth three points, and we lost by three.
- 21:09Speaker 4: But, like, one scenario, one play like that obviously changes
- 21:13Speaker 4: the entire outlook of the game and how the game's played, too.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Even three points does. So, like, yes and no. And
- 21:18Speaker 2: it obviously is a huge miss. Like, I'm not saying
- 21:20Speaker 2: it wasn't. That was a big play, but did that.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Was that the reason we lost?
- 21:29Speaker 1: No.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Like, not the only reason. There's obviously a lot of
- 21:31Speaker 2: other things that go into it. So.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Again, big play, but you're right, Dak.
- 21:36Speaker 4: That's the difference between being a good team and being
- 21:39Speaker 4: a championship-caliber team or beating a championship-caliber team, right? You
- 21:43Speaker 4: have to do a lot of things really, really well.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And we did a lot of really good things really,
- 21:49Speaker 4: really well, but it just was a few plays short
- 21:52Speaker 4: of what needed to happen to beat Indiana on October 10th.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Like, I just.
- 22:01Speaker 4: That's bottom line. That's what it came down to. A
- 22:03Speaker 4: lot of good, but just wasn't quite enough. It was
- 22:06Speaker 4: a one-score loss. It was a blow-another-lead-in-the-fourth-quarter loss. Like, go
- 22:12Speaker 4: down those narratives all you want. This one felt different
- 22:16Speaker 4: because of the way the game was played, obviously, and
- 22:19Speaker 4: who we played to. Like, we were playing Indiana, number
- 22:23Speaker 4: 17 in the country, and coming off all these, like,
- 22:26Speaker 4: it wasn't like we were playing Illinois, and this happened.
- 22:30Speaker 2: That conversation is.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Very different if we lose to Illinois after being up 17-6.
- 22:36Speaker 4: It is a very different conversation. Now, everything we're saying
- 22:43Speaker 4: right now could be completely changed if Indiana, because who
- 22:47Speaker 4: has Indiana really played?
- 22:49Speaker 2: We don't really know. We're saying Northwestern, right? We're saying
- 22:52Speaker 2: Northwestern's decent. They could be. If Ohio State comes out
- 22:56Speaker 2: and beats them, which they could do, 42-10.
- 22:58Speaker 4: 14, and then Indiana goes play somebody else. Then Indiana,
- 23:04Speaker 4: you know, Indiana ended the season eight and four.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:08Speaker 4: I think, I think your, your, your outlook on this
- 23:10Speaker 4: game is different. And I think our, our outcomes are
- 23:13Speaker 4: going to look different too, but from what we know
- 23:16Speaker 4: right now, right. Of what Indiana is and what they,
- 23:18Speaker 4: what they have been recently. That, that, that's my feeling
- 23:22Speaker 4: on the game.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't want to hear you more from the
- 23:26Speaker 1: rest of this year about, at least right now, who's
- 23:28Speaker 1: Indiana played. They played freaking Nebraska. We're good. I truly
- 23:32Speaker 1: think we are a top 15 team in the nation.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That game, I think, right there proved it. I think
- 23:39Speaker 1: that our offense just has studs everywhere. Our defense was
- 23:44Speaker 1: the main key to that game. We proved that. We
- 23:46Speaker 1: hung with it. I think Indiana is still a top
- 23:48Speaker 1: five team in the nation, too. We had a top
- 23:51Speaker 1: five national championship team on the ropes. That's all you
- 23:56Speaker 1: could ask for.
- 23:57Speaker 2: You got to win games to prove that, right?
- 23:59Speaker 4: And we've done that so far. I think that's where
- 24:02Speaker 4: you could argue, right? The way that we played our
- 24:04Speaker 4: first six games now, I wouldn't go top 15, but
- 24:09Speaker 4: that we're top 25 worthy. But I still just think
- 24:14Speaker 4: there's still more to prove, right? And another opportunity is
- 24:17Speaker 4: coming this Saturday. This Saturday actually ending on Sunday.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get in that bull crap. what the hell
- 24:28Speaker 1: is that?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Like there's another opportunity there. Right.
- 24:31Speaker 4: And in a game that again, going into the year,
- 24:33Speaker 4: you don't, you, you don't, you probably think you have
- 24:36Speaker 4: a less chance of winning that.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Actually.
- 24:38Speaker 4: I know people thought I thought to less chance of
- 24:40Speaker 4: winning that one than you did Indiana. But you're, you're
- 24:43Speaker 4: once again, a touchdown point underdog. So like you have
- 24:45Speaker 4: another opportunity to go do something that you're not supposed
- 24:48Speaker 4: to do, which we haven't done with this team.
- 24:51Speaker 1: So, so here's, here's another feeling I get here, Hunter.
- 24:54Speaker 1: And this is, It's just watching Husker games. I've probably
- 24:59Speaker 1: been a big Husker fan for the last five years,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I would say. This is what I feel like could
- 25:05Speaker 1: easily happen here. We're getting all hyped up, starting to
- 25:08Speaker 1: drink Kool-Aid here, and we don't get our ass kicked
- 25:10Speaker 1: at Oregon. Like, that's just the way it's been going
- 25:13Speaker 1: for us. Now, do I think it's going to happen? No,
- 25:16Speaker 1: I think this team is different.
- 25:17Speaker 2: But from what's been the past... If you truly believe we're.
- 25:19Speaker 4: A top 15 team, and I... Unfortunately, for my... sanity
- 25:25Speaker 4: and health.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I do. I'm with you. I don't think we will.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I think we're a lot better. I think we're better.
- 25:31Speaker 4: I think the way we came out and did what
- 25:33Speaker 4: we did against Indiana, I think we're better coach. I
- 25:35Speaker 4: think we're, we're, we did a lot of the things
- 25:38Speaker 4: that we did. We shouldn't go out and get destroyed
- 25:40Speaker 4: by Oregon who, as everybody knows at this point, they're not,
- 25:45Speaker 4: they're not the Oregon team that everybody thought they were
- 25:47Speaker 4: going to be the potential national champions. A lot of
- 25:50Speaker 4: people picked right there, three and two. They've, They just
- 25:54Speaker 4: lost to UCLA.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Wait, wait, wait. What happened to that game?
- 25:59Speaker 2: What?
- 25:59Speaker 1: What happened to their quarterback situation in that game? Didn't
- 26:03Speaker 1: Raiola play, was it supposed to be like their stud, savior, whatever?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be interesting what happens.
- 26:09Speaker 4: You got to talk about a tale of two performances
- 26:12Speaker 4: from USC to UCLA. So I guess we'll just be,
- 26:20Speaker 4: it'll be curious, like what, like, I fully expect to
- 26:24Speaker 4: obviously compete in that game. And if we get blown out,
- 26:27Speaker 4: you're right. You want to talk about a complete change
- 26:31Speaker 4: in outlook of a season. But I don't think we will.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But you're right. It's setting us up for heartbreak if
- 26:37Speaker 2: it does happen.
- 26:38Speaker 4: No, yeah.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I mean, we'll dive into Oregon as the week goes on.
- 26:40Speaker 1: But I fully expect Dante Morris in the back of
- 26:43Speaker 1: that game, which that's going to be a tough part, too. Because, well,
- 26:46Speaker 1: I don't know if Husker, I'm sure every Husker fan
- 26:49Speaker 1: saw this. What we're talking about is Ryola went 6-17,
- 26:50Speaker 1: two picks. no touchdowns against UCLA. He got benched. That's
- 26:55Speaker 1: how bad he was. So looking back on it, we're like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: Holy crap. What Calandria has proven this season is just
- 27:04Speaker 1: how much Dylan Ryle and not being able to run
- 27:07Speaker 1: the ball and extend plays was killing us. I think
- 27:11Speaker 1: that change of quarterback is just huge.
- 27:13Speaker 2: That. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:17Speaker 4: And, and last thing I guess I got on, on
- 27:20Speaker 4: this game here too, that the, The result of how
- 27:25Speaker 4: the game ended, I think, should, I think it will,
- 27:31Speaker 4: hope it will, it should change just the next practice
- 27:35Speaker 4: and the focus of the things we need to do
- 27:37Speaker 4: to win that game versus the entire identity of what
- 27:40Speaker 4: we believe in. I think this game proved, not just
- 27:44Speaker 4: to the fans and us outsiders, but internally that what
- 27:48Speaker 4: you're doing day after day from everything you're doing. I mean,
- 27:53Speaker 4: not just scheming, like it's working to put you in
- 27:57Speaker 4: a position to compete with the defending national champs. And
- 28:01Speaker 4: I think your, your mindset, I, I really believe I,
- 28:04Speaker 4: and I hope that like this, the mindset of the
- 28:07Speaker 4: players and the coaches and all that, it obviously it hurts.
- 28:10Speaker 4: And I hope that helps us just continue what we're
- 28:14Speaker 4: doing with where the season's at. And, if you do
- 28:19Speaker 4: that and then you make your few adjustments, right, you're
- 28:22Speaker 4: going to keep trending upwards in this season. The dangerous
- 28:27Speaker 4: side of the hat is what we just talked about
- 28:29Speaker 4: was the other extreme of you came so close and
- 28:33Speaker 4: now the top falls off because.
- 28:38Speaker 2: You put everything you had into this game and you lost.
- 28:40Speaker 4: And if that happens, obviously all the signs of thinking
- 28:43Speaker 4: that we're a well-coached moving forward team is not true.
- 28:48Speaker 4: But Oregon's definitely the response game. It's showing that what
- 28:54Speaker 4: we did against Indiana and what we are learning from.
- 28:57Speaker 2: It, it travels because obviously it's going to be at Oregon.
- 29:00Speaker 4: I mean, it's not going to be as hostile as
- 29:02Speaker 4: it would have been coming into the year, but it's
- 29:04Speaker 4: still going to be a road game in a tough environment,
- 29:06Speaker 4: a loud environment. We got to show it. We got
- 29:12Speaker 4: to prove it. In a game like this, another opportunity, right?
- 29:16Speaker 4: Another opportunity that Do I necessarily think that if we
- 29:20Speaker 4: lose the game, it ruins the entire season for me?
- 29:22Speaker 1: No. Depending on how we lose.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Correct, no matter how– but if you win the game,
- 29:29Speaker 4: obviously it's another opportunity that moves us big time a
- 29:31Speaker 4: step forward in the direction that we want to go.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Here's another thing. Everyone was like, which I think we
- 29:40Speaker 1: all said is coming in the year. Everyone coming in
- 29:42Speaker 1: the year was like, man, this schedule is so tough.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Isn't it funny how it breaks out? You never know
- 29:46Speaker 1: what these teams are going to be like. It's breaking
- 29:48Speaker 1: out now. You go and beat Oregon, the path is
- 29:51Speaker 1: ahead of us to freaking make the playoffs.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Seriously.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Ohio State, I don't think we're going to win that one,
- 29:57Speaker 1: but You have two losses, and then it's going to
- 30:00Speaker 1: come down to which, this is a nightmare scenario for
- 30:02Speaker 1: Husker fans right here, going to be a win and
- 30:04Speaker 1: get in at Iowa, I feel like, if we can
- 30:06Speaker 1: go out and beat Oregon. Now, again, we're jumping ahead
- 30:09Speaker 1: of ourselves here, but that's the way I'm thinking the
- 30:11Speaker 1: schedule is shaping up.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Yeah, tomorrow what I'm going to do in this whole episode,
- 30:19Speaker 4: we're six games in. Obviously, we're not at the bye
- 30:21Speaker 4: week yet, but we're halfway through our schedule, and I'll
- 30:27Speaker 4: just kind of reset the halfway expectations of, you know,
- 30:31Speaker 4: where things were at after last year coming into the year,
- 30:34Speaker 4: and then what these next six games could be with
- 30:38Speaker 4: what we've seen so far. So that's kind of the
- 30:41Speaker 4: plan for tomorrow. Dak will be back Wednesday, and then
- 30:45Speaker 4: at the end of the week, we will deeper dive
- 30:47Speaker 4: into Oregon. We'll kind of hear more news probably on
- 30:50Speaker 4: who's planning to start quarterback that game, but.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Before we sign off here, I'm asking one thing. You've
- 30:56Speaker 1: obviously been to a lot of Husker games. That's a lander,
- 30:59Speaker 1: a touchdown run. Where would you rank that up in
- 31:02Speaker 1: your top moments in Memorial Stadium?
- 31:05Speaker 2: I mean, pretty high up there.
- 31:06Speaker 1: With crowd-wise, how crazy is that place jumping?
- 31:10Speaker 2: It would have been number one if you win the game. Yep.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That was a great moment.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Obviously, it wasn't in that. But in the single moment itself, yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 2: it was. It's up there.
- 31:22Speaker 1: And also right before that play, too, bringing out Emma Johnson. Oh, man,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I was jacked up.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Definitely a fun atmosphere, fun environment for sure. And right
- 31:35Speaker 4: there for the taking again.
- 31:36Speaker 2: But didn't get it done.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Like I said, missed opportunity, but a lot of good
- 31:40Speaker 4: things positive to take away.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Freaking moral victory. We will be back tomorrow. Go Big Red.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Go Big Red.
- 31:52Speaker 3: The headlines change, but the mission stays. From Memorial Stadium
- 31:56Speaker 3: to PBA days. Football Saturdays, basketball nights.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Every story chasing red and white.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Recruiting buzz, big time commits.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Camp battles, coaching hits.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Transfer moves and rising stars. The road to glory's never far.
- 32:14Speaker 3: This is Return to Glory, where every headline.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Tells a story.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Big Red pride every season, Husker Nation's got a reason.
- 32:24Speaker 2: From touchdowns, dunks, and championship.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Dreams, we'll be back with the.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Latest from every team.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Until next time, keep the faith, keep believing, because the
- 32:33Speaker 3: Return to Glory is just beginning.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Go Big Red! See you next episode!
