- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hello and good morning, faithful listeners. Thank you
- 0:06Speaker 1: for tuning into the Bible Explained podcast, and I'm so
- 0:09Speaker 1: excited that you all are here to share a delicious
- 0:11Speaker 1: cup of coffee with me or a delicious hot beverage
- 0:14Speaker 1: as we read from the Book of Hebrews today. Okay,
- 0:23Speaker 1: faithful listeners, so today we are going to be finishing
- 0:25Speaker 1: up Hebrews chapter six. But of course, before we begin
- 0:29Speaker 1: today's episode, make sure to grab your delicious cup of
- 0:31Speaker 1: coffee or a cup of tea, or any other beverage
- 0:34Speaker 1: that you're drinking today. I actually am not drinking either
- 0:38Speaker 1: coffee or tea. I am drinking juice this morning. I
- 0:42Speaker 1: don't know what it was. Today's a little bit warmer
- 0:44Speaker 1: than usual, and I just had a craving for some juice,
- 0:47Speaker 1: which never happens. I never drink juice. The reason I
- 0:51Speaker 1: even had some in my refrigerator is that I could
- 0:53Speaker 1: make some smoothies out of it. I never just drink
- 0:56Speaker 1: plain juice. But for some reason, I was just craving
- 0:58Speaker 1: a cold beverage this morning, and juice was the answer. Now,
- 1:02Speaker 1: as you go, grab your hot beverage or your juice
- 1:04Speaker 1: to share along with me. Here's a quick word from
- 1:07Speaker 1: a sponsor. Or. Two. Okay, now let's turn in our
- 1:11Speaker 1: Bibles to Hebrew six and finish out reading this passage
- 1:16Speaker 1: in verses nine through twenty. Now, it is very important
- 1:19Speaker 1: to understand the beginning of Hebrew six in order to
- 1:22Speaker 1: understand what we're talking about today, So I do highly
- 1:26Speaker 1: recommend you read it for yourself, or go back and
- 1:28Speaker 1: listen to Tuesday's episode. Let's move into Hebrew six, nine
- 1:33Speaker 1: through twenty as usual, I'll be reading from the web
- 1:36Speaker 1: this morning. But beloved, we are persuaded of better things
- 1:41Speaker 1: for you, and things that accompany salvation. Even though we
- 1:44Speaker 1: speak like this, for God is not unrighteous, so as
- 1:48Speaker 1: to forget your work in the labor of love which
- 1:50Speaker 1: you showed toward His name, and that you serve the
- 1:52Speaker 1: saints and still do serve them. We desire that each
- 1:55Speaker 1: one of you may show the same diligence to the
- 1:57Speaker 1: fullness of hope, even to the end. You won't be sluggish,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but imitators of those who, through faith and perseverance, inherited
- 2:04Speaker 1: the promises. For when God made a promise to Abraham,
- 2:07Speaker 1: since he could swear by no one greater, he swore
- 2:10Speaker 1: by himself, saying, surely, blessing, I will bless you, and multiplying,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I will multiply you. Thus, having patiently endured, he obtained
- 2:18Speaker 1: the promise for men, indeed swear by a greater one,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and in every dispute of theirs, the oath is final
- 2:24Speaker 1: for confirmation. In this way, God, being determined to show
- 2:28Speaker 1: more abundantly to the errors of the promise, the immutability
- 2:31Speaker 1: of his counsel, interposed with an oath that by two
- 2:34Speaker 1: immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,
- 2:38Speaker 1: we may have a strong encouragement who have fled for
- 2:41Speaker 1: refuge to take hold of the hope set before us.
- 2:44Speaker 1: This hope we have is an anchor of the soul,
- 2:47Speaker 1: a hope both sure and steadfast, and entering into that
- 2:50Speaker 1: which is within the veil, whereas a forerunner Jesus entered
- 2:54Speaker 1: for us, having become a high priest forever after the
- 2:57Speaker 1: order of Malchisedek. Starting in verse nine, for today it says, beloved,
- 3:03Speaker 1: we are persuaded of better things for you and things
- 3:06Speaker 1: that accompany salvation. Even though we speak like this now,
- 3:10Speaker 1: you'll remember on Tuesday we talked about the first portion
- 3:13Speaker 1: of Hebrew six and it was a strong warning to
- 3:17Speaker 1: anybody who either is a Christian and falls away from
- 3:20Speaker 1: the faith, or somebody who hears the truth of God
- 3:25Speaker 1: and just refuses to accept it but still pretends to
- 3:28Speaker 1: be a Christian. It's a warning to those people. Do
- 3:31Speaker 1: not do that, because either you're going to lose your reward,
- 3:34Speaker 1: or if you're just a person posing as a Christian,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you're never going to gain salvation. And as we discussed,
- 3:40Speaker 1: those two things are very scary consequences. But the author
- 3:44Speaker 1: realizes that this could feel very discouraging to many Christians
- 3:50Speaker 1: because they might start, you know, questioning their faith. They
- 3:53Speaker 1: might start being even more discouraged if they're going through
- 3:57Speaker 1: something or you know, questioning God or something like that.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So after giving them a strong warning, he encourages them.
- 4:04Speaker 1: In verses nine through twenty, he says, beloved, we are
- 4:07Speaker 1: persuaded of better things for you and the things that
- 4:10Speaker 1: accompany salvation, even though we speak like this, for God
- 4:14Speaker 1: is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and
- 4:17Speaker 1: the labor of love which you showed toward His name,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and that you serve the saints and still do serve them.
- 4:24Speaker 1: In other words, just because you might be struggling with
- 4:28Speaker 1: some questions about God. This doesn't mean that you should
- 4:32Speaker 1: think that you're not actually saved, or that you're losing
- 4:35Speaker 1: your reward or something along those lines. Again, when the
- 4:39Speaker 1: author was giving that warning at the beginning of this chapter,
- 4:42Speaker 1: he was talking about people that were either posers or
- 4:46Speaker 1: people who genuinely leave the faith and not just like
- 4:52Speaker 1: backslide or something like that, or have questions about God
- 4:55Speaker 1: or you know, struggle to understand something. But people who
- 4:59Speaker 1: not only leave leave their faith, but they start saying
- 5:03Speaker 1: things against Jesus. They say, oh, that Christianity wasn't for me.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I tried it out at one point, But it's bad
- 5:09Speaker 1: for people. It's bad for you know, so and so,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and this way of life is better something like that.
- 5:14Speaker 1: The average person, you know, struggling over some question that
- 5:18Speaker 1: they have or struggling through a trial, not understanding God.
- 5:22Speaker 1: These people are not in the same category as those
- 5:27Speaker 1: talked about in verses one through eight, which is why
- 5:31Speaker 1: the author says God is not going to forget you. Yes,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you might have some struggles, but God is not forgetting you,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and he isn't unrighteous. In fact, it says in verse ten,
- 5:43Speaker 1: for God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your
- 5:46Speaker 1: work in the labor of love which you showed toward
- 5:48Speaker 1: His name, and that you served the saints and you
- 5:50Speaker 1: still do serve them. We desire that each one of
- 5:54Speaker 1: you may show the same diligence to the fullness of hope,
- 5:57Speaker 1: even to the end, so that you won't be sluggish,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but imitators of those who, through faith and perseverance, inherited
- 6:03Speaker 1: the promise. So God is not unrighteous. He sees the
- 6:07Speaker 1: good works that you're doing. Now, granted, those good works
- 6:10Speaker 1: aren't going to save you, but God still sees them.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It does say that God is going to judge everybody
- 6:15Speaker 1: based upon the works that they did. So good works
- 6:18Speaker 1: are still important to do as a Christian because even
- 6:22Speaker 1: though they don't gain us salvation, if we don't believe
- 6:24Speaker 1: in Jesus, no amount of good works that we do
- 6:26Speaker 1: are ever going to save us. But God is going
- 6:29Speaker 1: to give us a reward based upon the works that
- 6:32Speaker 1: we do. God is not unrighteous, and he understands what
- 6:34Speaker 1: you're going through. He sees what you're going through, and
- 6:37Speaker 1: he sees the good works that you're doing, even if
- 6:39Speaker 1: your faith is wavering a little bit. Obviously, that's not
- 6:43Speaker 1: to say that everything we talked about in verses one
- 6:46Speaker 1: through eight isn't the truth, because it is. We don't
- 6:50Speaker 1: want our faith to waver so much that we end
- 6:52Speaker 1: up just rejecting Jesus entirely, because that would be very
- 6:56Speaker 1: bad for us obviously in the end. But still God
- 6:59Speaker 1: comes alongside people who are questioning Him. And this is
- 7:02Speaker 1: something that I've experienced in my own life as well.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The times when I question God, you know, I feel
- 7:08Speaker 1: very distant from him. But once I kind of like
- 7:11Speaker 1: soften my heart and I guess go through a surrender
- 7:15Speaker 1: where I'm like, God, I don't quite get what you
- 7:17Speaker 1: are doing, but I trust you. That's when God seems
- 7:21Speaker 1: to really reveal the answer to me. And then I
- 7:24Speaker 1: kind of understand a little bit more why God works
- 7:28Speaker 1: the way he works, Like either he shows something to
- 7:30Speaker 1: me in my own life, or he helps me through
- 7:33Speaker 1: something that I felt was really impossible at the time,
- 7:35Speaker 1: or he gives me something in scripture that I can
- 7:38Speaker 1: hold on to. God understands when we're struggling. And we
- 7:43Speaker 1: talked about that actually in Hebrews not too long ago either,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I think that was in was it Hebrews too, where
- 7:48Speaker 1: it says Jesus can understand everything we're going through because
- 7:54Speaker 1: he experienced it himself. So I think that's what the
- 7:56Speaker 1: author is trying to bring forward here. He says, we
- 7:59Speaker 1: desire that each one of you may show the same
- 8:01Speaker 1: diligence to the fullness of hope, even to the end,
- 8:04Speaker 1: that you won't be sluggish, but imitators of those who,
- 8:07Speaker 1: through faith and perseverance, inherited the promises. So he's telling
- 8:11Speaker 1: the people, don't become sluggish in your faith walk, don't
- 8:16Speaker 1: become discouraged, don't give up like the people in Hebrews six'
- 8:21Speaker 1: one through eight. Did don't give up on the faith
- 8:24Speaker 1: even if you're not understanding. It don't become, sluggish but
- 8:27Speaker 1: be imitators of those, who through faith and, perseverance inherited the.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Promises this kind of reminds me of something That paul
- 8:35Speaker 1: said In galatians, six verse. Nine he, said let us
- 8:38Speaker 1: not become weary in doing, good for at the proper
- 8:41Speaker 1: time we will reap a harvest if we do not give.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Up so don't give up doing good, things even if
- 8:47Speaker 1: it is getting so irritating you're not sure why you're
- 8:51Speaker 1: doing it, Anymore you're not sure What god is doing
- 8:55Speaker 1: in your, life and you hate basically everything about your current.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Situation don't give, up like the author Of hebrew, says
- 9:03Speaker 1: don't become these people that leave the faith from discouragement
- 9:08Speaker 1: or from lack of trust In. God instead be imitators
- 9:11Speaker 1: of those, who through faith and, perseverance inherited the. Promises
- 9:15Speaker 1: and then the author gives an example of somebody who
- 9:17Speaker 1: did inherit a promise through faith and. Perseverance It's. Abraham
- 9:23Speaker 1: and that's talked about in the next, verse verse thirteen
- 9:25Speaker 1: Of hebrew six for When god made a promise To,
- 9:28Speaker 1: abraham since he could swear by no one, greater he
- 9:31Speaker 1: swore by. HIMSELF i found that verse quite. Charming, Actually
- 9:38Speaker 1: god swore this promise To abraham by. Himself he's, LIKE
- 9:42Speaker 1: i can't swear it on anybody. Greater there is nobody
- 9:45Speaker 1: greater Than. God SO i am going to swear by
- 9:47Speaker 1: my own name That, abraham these things will happen to.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You and here's What y'a always says To abraham and verse,
- 9:54Speaker 1: fourteen surely BLESSING i will bless, you and, MULTIPLYING i
- 9:59Speaker 1: will multiply. You, thus having patiently, endured he obtained the.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Promise abraham went through a. Lot you, know you can
- 10:08Speaker 1: read about his story in the beginning of the book Of.
- 10:10Speaker 1: GENESIS i think It's. GENESIS i don't, know fourteen through twenty.
- 10:14Speaker 1: SOMETHING i did not look it, up SO i apologize for.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That but it's around that time period Of. Genesis abraham
- 10:21Speaker 1: persevered and did in fact obtain the promise That god gave,
- 10:26Speaker 1: him the promise being That abraham would become a great.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Nation And abraham persevered is what is. Said he did
- 10:35Speaker 1: not give. Up he did not lose faith In, god
- 10:38Speaker 1: even though he had no clue How god was going
- 10:41Speaker 1: to do, this because don't Forget abraham's. Situation he was
- 10:44Speaker 1: like a trillion years. Old he was definitely close to
- 10:48Speaker 1: one hundred years, old and he was so old he
- 10:51Speaker 1: couldn't have children. Anymore same went for his. Wife you,
- 10:54Speaker 1: know his wife was in her eighties and. Nineties they
- 10:58Speaker 1: weren't able to have. Kids and Yet abraham did not
- 11:01Speaker 1: give up in the promises That god gave, him though
- 11:05Speaker 1: he didn't understand How god would do, it and Then
- 11:08Speaker 1: god did. It, sarah at ninety years, old became pregnant
- 11:13Speaker 1: and gave birth To isaac and Through isaac came The israelite.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Nation abraham obtained his promise From, god it says in verse,
- 11:23Speaker 1: sixteen for men indeed swear by a greater, one and
- 11:27Speaker 1: in every dispute of, theirs the oath is final for.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Confirmation so that's very Old english to say that when
- 11:33Speaker 1: somebody gives an, oath an oath that they're definitely going to,
- 11:37Speaker 1: keep they swear by somebody greater than, them whether It's
- 11:40Speaker 1: god or their mother's, grave or they put their hand
- 11:43Speaker 1: on The bible or something like. That they swear by
- 11:46Speaker 1: somebody greater than. Themselves But god verse, seventeen in this,
- 11:50Speaker 1: way being determined to show more abundantly to the heirs
- 11:54Speaker 1: of the promise the immutability of his counsel interposed with an,
- 11:58Speaker 1: oath that by the two immutable things in which it
- 12:02Speaker 1: is impossible For god to, lie we may have strong
- 12:05Speaker 1: encouragement who have fled for refuge to take hold of
- 12:09Speaker 1: the hope set before. Us just like how somebody would
- 12:12Speaker 1: put their hand on The bible and state an oath
- 12:15Speaker 1: say that they're going to do, Something god in a
- 12:19Speaker 1: sense did the same, thing not by putting his hand
- 12:21Speaker 1: on The, bible, obviously but by using his own, name
- 12:24Speaker 1: because there is nobody greater than, him and SAYING i
- 12:28Speaker 1: am going to do this thing for. You but it
- 12:30Speaker 1: also says That god was determined to show more abundantly
- 12:33Speaker 1: to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Counsel so this promise wasn't just For, abraham but it
- 12:40Speaker 1: extends to all Of abraham's. Children and Since god can't
- 12:45Speaker 1: break his, promise he cannot. Lie this promise is going
- 12:49Speaker 1: to come, true not just For abraham like it already,
- 12:52Speaker 1: did but for everybody who is a child Of, abraham
- 12:57Speaker 1: and who are the children Of. Abraham, well if you
- 12:59Speaker 1: turn TO U galatians three twenty eight and twenty, nine
- 13:03Speaker 1: it says there is neither jew nor, gentile neither slave nor,
- 13:06Speaker 1: free nor is there male and, Female for you are
- 13:10Speaker 1: all one In Christ. Jesus if you belong To, christ
- 13:13Speaker 1: then you Are abraham's seed and heirs according to the.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Promise we are heirs according to the. Promise the promise
- 13:24Speaker 1: was not just That abraham was going to become a great,
- 13:26Speaker 1: nation but that somebody would come Through abraham's bloodline that
- 13:32Speaker 1: would bless the entire. Earth, now back in the old,
- 13:36Speaker 1: days people believed that it was The jewish nation as a,
- 13:40Speaker 1: whole And god actually kind of said that to The jewish.
- 13:43Speaker 1: People he, said through, you all the nations of the
- 13:46Speaker 1: world are going to be. Blessed but even more, Broadly
- 13:51Speaker 1: jesus is the person who is going to bless all the,
- 13:53Speaker 1: nations and anybody who believes In jesus has become an
- 13:58Speaker 1: heir Of. Abraham what it, Says so we have this
- 14:01Speaker 1: promise given to us That jesus is going to save
- 14:05Speaker 1: us when we believe in. Him we are children of that,
- 14:09Speaker 1: promise so we don't have to fear even though the
- 14:12Speaker 1: author at the beginning gave this strong, warning if we
- 14:16Speaker 1: believe In jesus and hold fast to that, belief we
- 14:20Speaker 1: are children Of, abraham and we're not going to lose
- 14:22Speaker 1: our reward or become like somebody who just looks like A.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Christian but it goes in one ear and out the.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Other so none of us have to fear losing our
- 14:32Speaker 1: reward or salvation or something like, that because we are
- 14:35Speaker 1: children of the. Promise it says in verse. Nineteen this
- 14:39Speaker 1: hope we have is an anchor of the, soul a
- 14:42Speaker 1: hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which
- 14:46Speaker 1: is within the, veil whereas a Forerunner jesus entered for,
- 14:50Speaker 1: us having become a high priest forever after the order Of.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Melchisedek this is a hope that we, have it, Says
- 14:56Speaker 1: it anchors our. Soul it's a hope both s sure and.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Steadfast so in other, words we shouldn't be doubting this
- 15:03Speaker 1: salvation That jesus gives. Us and there are a lot Of, christians,
- 15:07Speaker 1: unfortunately that do doubt their. Salvation they think that they
- 15:12Speaker 1: are not good enough to truly be, saved even if
- 15:14Speaker 1: they genuinely believe In. Jesus they believe That jesus died for,
- 15:19Speaker 1: Them they believe That jesus rose again on the third,
- 15:21Speaker 1: day he ascended up into, heaven like the basic foundations Of.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Christianity they believe all those, things but they still think
- 15:29Speaker 1: they don't have salvation because they're either not good, enough
- 15:32Speaker 1: or they do bad things on, occasion or they haven't obtained,
- 15:36Speaker 1: perfection Or god just couldn't love, them whatever it might.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Be but those are lies From. Satan Because god is
- 15:44Speaker 1: so powerful and he can't break his. Promise so when
- 15:48Speaker 1: he saves, you he saves you that is not a
- 15:51Speaker 1: promise that is going to be. Broken it says right,
- 15:54Speaker 1: Here god cannot. Lie AND i think these verses verses
- 15:58Speaker 1: nine through, twenty If hebrews, sick prove without a shadow
- 16:02Speaker 1: of a doubt that salvation cannot be. Lost, yes people
- 16:06Speaker 1: can walk away from the. Faith it happens all the,
- 16:09Speaker 1: time but either it was because they never truly, believed
- 16:14Speaker 1: or if they did, believe they still have been. Saved
- 16:17Speaker 1: but As paul says In One corinthians chapter, three they're
- 16:20Speaker 1: going to be, saved but just, barely but their reward
- 16:23Speaker 1: will be. Gone god does not. Lie so If he
- 16:27Speaker 1: gives you, salvation you have. Salvation and so you shouldn't
- 16:32Speaker 1: be fearing or believing That god is going to take
- 16:36Speaker 1: the salvation away from, you or that you never really
- 16:39Speaker 1: got salvation from the. Beginning you shouldn't be fearing that
- 16:42Speaker 1: because this hope we have is an anchor for our.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Souls it also says That jesus entered into The Holy
- 16:50Speaker 1: place for, us having become a high priest forever after
- 16:53Speaker 1: the order of malchis. Deck so not only Does god
- 16:56Speaker 1: not lie and he gives us, salvation but we also
- 17:00Speaker 1: have a high priest advocating for us to The, father
- 17:05Speaker 1: which is another reason why we shouldn't be fearing about
- 17:07Speaker 1: losing our, salvation Because jesus is our high. Priest remember
- 17:13Speaker 1: what the high priest did back in The Old. Testament
- 17:15Speaker 1: he was an advocate for the. People he'd go To
- 17:19Speaker 1: god The, father he would make atonement for the, people
- 17:21Speaker 1: he'd pray for the, people he'd teach the people the
- 17:24Speaker 1: right way to. Live he was the guy that everybody
- 17:26Speaker 1: went to so that they could gain forgiveness from. Sins,
- 17:30Speaker 1: essentially And jesus is that for. Us he is the
- 17:34Speaker 1: one who gives us. Forgiveness he's the one that advocates
- 17:38Speaker 1: for us To god The. Father i've always Imagined jesus
- 17:43Speaker 1: kind of being at the right hand Of god The,
- 17:45Speaker 1: father currently up in, heaven and WHENEVER i, sin he
- 17:49Speaker 1: leans Into god The father and he, Says, FATHER i
- 17:53Speaker 1: paid for the sins of that. Person she's. Saved even
- 17:56Speaker 1: though she fails all the, time she is. Saved AND
- 17:59Speaker 1: i might be a little bit wrong about. THAT i
- 18:00Speaker 1: might be painting a picture that is not exactly. Biblical
- 18:04Speaker 1: but we do know That jesus is standing on the
- 18:06Speaker 1: right side Of god The, father and that he's our.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Advocate what that looks like, Exactly i'm not, sure but
- 18:12Speaker 1: he's our high. Priest and so these are the reasons
- 18:14Speaker 1: why we should not fear losing our salvation. Again if
- 18:20Speaker 1: you believe That jesus is your, savior you are saved
- 18:25Speaker 1: and nothing can take that away from you Because god
- 18:28Speaker 1: swore an oath on his own, name And god does not. Lie,
- 18:35Speaker 1: okay faithful, LISTENERS i appreciate you guys all tuning in
- 18:37Speaker 1: to Finish hebrews six with. Me BEFORE i end today's
- 18:42Speaker 1: episode with a few last closing things to. Say here
- 18:45Speaker 1: is a message from a sponsor or. TWO i find
- 18:50Speaker 1: it so interesting that people think that The book Of
- 18:52Speaker 1: hebrews teaches that you can lose, salvation and yet we
- 18:55Speaker 1: see some of the most opposite viewpoints to that in
- 18:57Speaker 1: The book Of hebrews. Itself and, NO i don't think
