Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: What's up?
- 0:18Speaker 2: What's happening? Emily Abadi? Here you are listening to five
- 0:21Speaker 2: minute Friday on Hurdle. I am so excited because if
- 0:26Speaker 2: you're listening to this in real time, I am very
- 0:30Speaker 2: likely either on the beach near a beach. I'm off
- 0:36Speaker 2: to Miami this weekend and oh my gosh, I just
- 0:39Speaker 2: want to be warm.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The cold is kicking in.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I've run outside three days this week and I am frigid.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I decided to book this trip to take some time
- 0:50Speaker 2: for myself at the end of a long year, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: I try to set a side time twice a year
- 0:58Speaker 2: to do what I call up personal inventory summit. And
- 1:02Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you what that is. So I
- 1:04Speaker 2: typically do one in June around my birthday, and then
- 1:06Speaker 2: one at the end of the year. And although I
- 1:08Speaker 2: journal every day, and I've been journaling with many of
- 1:11Speaker 2: you as a part of this month long challenge in
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Daily Hurdle channel over on Instagram, so come join us,
- 1:19Speaker 2: but I digress. I journal daily, but this specific exercise
- 1:24Speaker 2: that I do is much more of a holistic audit
- 1:28Speaker 2: of what's going on in my life. I take stock
- 1:31Speaker 2: of myself, my strengths, my shortcomings, my goals and my
- 1:36Speaker 2: values and candidly my failures too. And so for this audit,
- 1:42Speaker 2: I've mapped it out into three distinct focus areas. I
- 1:46Speaker 2: look at relationships, health, and work. Again, I look at relationships, health,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and work. And so when I'm writing on each of
- 1:54Speaker 2: these areas, I ask myself the following four questions.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Firstly, what's going well? What's not going well?
- 2:02Speaker 2: What am I most proud of myself for accomplishing in
- 2:06Speaker 2: this area? How much time am I dedicating to this
- 2:09Speaker 2: area of my life every week? And on a scale
- 2:12Speaker 2: of one to ten, how satisfied am I in this
- 2:15Speaker 2: part of my life? The fact is, and the reason
- 2:19Speaker 2: that I do this is because we only get one home,
- 2:22Speaker 2: this body. What I'm dealing with in my head like,
- 2:26Speaker 2: this is my home, and so I know that how
- 2:29Speaker 2: you feel about yourself when you're by yourself is everything.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And it's not always easy to confront the stuff that's
- 2:36Speaker 2: pretty and raw. But the older that I get, the
- 2:39Speaker 2: more I realize that self awareness is truly my greatest tool.
- 2:44Speaker 2: So this little audit helps me dive head first into
- 2:47Speaker 2: what's really going on. I am ready to dive headfirst
- 2:51Speaker 2: into what's really going on. And I find that by
- 2:54Speaker 2: setting aside this specific time to get really honest with myself,
- 2:59Speaker 2: I'm more open to getting really honest with myself. I've
- 3:03Speaker 2: said this before and I'll say it again. You don't
- 3:05Speaker 2: get to get things unless you're willing to put them
- 3:08Speaker 2: out into the universe. And so in order for me
- 3:11Speaker 2: to get some of the things that I am after
- 3:13Speaker 2: in twenty twenty six and beyond, I need to confront
- 3:17Speaker 2: what already is and then step forward and into my
- 3:20Speaker 2: purpose on what it is that I'm excited about.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And so that's the stick with the self audit. I'm
- 3:27Speaker 1: going to be doing mind this weekend.
- 3:28Speaker 2: If it sounds like something that you are interested in,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I would love to hear about your process. If you
- 3:34Speaker 2: feel like this exercise is helpful, feel free to tag
- 3:38Speaker 2: me over on social It's over at Hurdle Podcast and
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm over at Emily a Body. My thought prompt for
- 3:45Speaker 2: you this week is what's going well and what's not
- 3:49Speaker 2: going well? And again I am identifying these in three areas, relationships, health,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and work. Maybe to start you begin by just picking one.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So again, what's going well and what's not going well?
- 4:04Speaker 2: And now a listener question, Hey, Emily, my name is Tara.
- 4:09Speaker 2: With the holidays and a busy work season approaching, I
- 4:11Speaker 2: feel like my self care is the first thing to
- 4:13Speaker 2: go out the window.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Amen, you always seem to move with so much intention.
- 4:17Speaker 2: How do you protect your non negotiables like your morning
- 4:20Speaker 2: routine or your sleep when the rest of the world
- 4:22Speaker 2: is asking for one hundred and ten percent of your time?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Wow, this is a good one, Okay.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I definitely will be the first to admit that I
- 4:32Speaker 2: do flex a bit on my regular routines during the
- 4:36Speaker 2: holiday season because there's so much opportunity to do things
- 4:39Speaker 2: that also align with my values aka spending time with friends,
- 4:44Speaker 2: quality time, getting together with my family. I really care
- 4:48Speaker 2: deeply about those things, and I know that there are
- 4:52Speaker 2: certain aspects of my day to day that, within the
- 4:55Speaker 2: realm of whatever is possible, I do like to stick.
- 5:00Speaker 1: So I'll give you a really good example.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I went out to dinner with a good friend last
- 5:06Speaker 2: night and then met another friend a little later than
- 5:08Speaker 2: I normally would have, at like eight thirty.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm laughing.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Some of you were like, Emily, eight thirty is not late,
- 5:14Speaker 2: but for me, it is late. And so I met
- 5:16Speaker 2: this person at eight thirty and probably didn't get home
- 5:20Speaker 2: until closer to maybe ten thirty or eleven, woke up
- 5:23Speaker 2: a bit later than I normally would today, and then
- 5:27Speaker 2: accommodated my schedule for that ahead of time. So I
- 5:30Speaker 2: already anticipated I wasn't getting up at six thirty this
- 5:33Speaker 2: morning to do the strength run combo that I wanted
- 5:37Speaker 2: to do, and so I had the ability to block
- 5:41Speaker 2: my calendar to do that a little bit later than normal.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Is that something that I have the bandwidth to do
- 5:47Speaker 2: all the time, of course not. But I thought ahead
- 5:50Speaker 2: and planned ahead so that I could make all of
- 5:53Speaker 2: these things that I care about work for me now.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I actually think, as I mentioned earlier, that journaling Challenge
- 5:59Speaker 2: were doing over on Instagram and the Daily Hurdle channel.
- 6:02Speaker 1: If you aren't doing it with.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Us just yet, if you literally go over to at
- 6:06Speaker 2: Hurdle podcast on ig you'll see the channel at the
- 6:10Speaker 2: top of the profile. I think that that has been
- 6:13Speaker 2: so helpful for me to come back to myself when
- 6:17Speaker 2: otherwise I can be super sporadic and running around, and
- 6:22Speaker 2: even on the mornings where I have somewhere to go
- 6:24Speaker 2: or something to do, I'm like, it's just a few minutes.
- 6:28Speaker 1: It's just a few minutes, and that foundation.
- 6:32Speaker 2: That makes such a major difference, to have that time
- 6:36Speaker 2: with yourself, to give yourself the gift of presence so
- 6:40Speaker 2: that you can then show up and be a better
- 6:42Speaker 2: version of yourself for yes, you and also the people
- 6:46Speaker 2: that you love and care about around you. The last
- 6:49Speaker 2: thing I'll say on this is do the best you
- 6:52Speaker 2: can to have some grace the holidays. They only happen
- 6:56Speaker 2: once a year at least these ones, right, and so
- 6:59Speaker 2: you need to roll with the punches a little bit.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Enjoy it because you deserve it. It is such a special
- 7:05Speaker 2: time and often a time that involves things that we
- 7:10Speaker 2: don't get to do all that often. Maybe your best
- 7:15Speaker 2: case scenario is knowing that come December twenty seventh, you
- 7:20Speaker 2: have the bandwidth to get into some routines that fell
- 7:23Speaker 2: by the wayside a little bit in the weeks prior.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And like I said, sometimes the best routines are the
- 7:30Speaker 2: ones that you can commit small chunks of time too.
- 7:34Speaker 2: It could be different than your normal, but it doesn't
- 7:36Speaker 2: mean that it's not beneficial. Do the best you can
- 7:39Speaker 2: with what you have, have fun and of course happy holidays.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Make sure you're following along over on social it's at
- 7:46Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at Emily Avadi another hurdle conquered.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
