Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to this episode of the justice team podcast on the justice team network.
- 0:06I'm your host, Bob Simon.
- 0:07And today we're getting into a deep dive with a very famous trial lawyer named Dan
- 0:12Schar who comes to us from Santa Cruz.
- 0:14And we're talking about health and wellness and some of the things that
- 0:17lawyers don't like to talk about and that we should be talking about.
- 0:21And I, you know, I'm very, I've been very much looking forward to this
- 0:23conversation because I don't get to see Dan that often unless we go to trial
- 0:27seminars or sometimes See each other with the kids at conferences and things.
- 0:31Um, so Dan, thanks for coming on.
- 0:32Yeah, I
- 0:33mean, it's great seeing you.
- 0:34Um, came in from Santa Cruz today?
- 0:36I
- 0:36did, early this morning, 6am flight.
- 0:39Woof.
- 0:39Back home tonight, so.
- 0:41Well.
- 0:42You know, this is life, right?
- 0:43It is life, a lot of these in and out things.
- 0:45But, um, first time I met Dan in person was I was trying a case in
- 0:49Santa Cruz and he knew the judge and there was this person that looked
- 0:52like Thor in the back of the room that just had a long hair, you know, big
- 0:56beard and just coming in in a suit.
- 0:58And I was like, trying to talk, I was like, who is this?
- 0:59It was Dan Scharr, the trial lawyer, the local guy.
- 1:02And just, I mean, I'm getting a very good verdict in that courtroom
- 1:04and Dan helped us every day because you knew the judge, Judge Burdick,
- 1:08who's now private, who's awesome.
- 1:09Yes.
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:10I just actually,
- 1:11I, I had mediated a case just a couple of weeks ago with Paul.
- 1:16Now that I'm first name basis with him, you know, unless I need
- 1:19something from him, then it's judge.
- 1:21Um, so Dan, one of the things we want to talk to you about is how, you know, your
- 1:26commitment to preventative health, right.
- 1:28What that means for you and how, you know, we do high stakes litigation
- 1:33and trials flying around a lot.
- 1:35You know, you're all over the country doing stuff.
- 1:37You have a family at home.
- 1:39How are you able to take care of yourself?
- 1:42I mean, it's hard.
- 1:43It's, yeah, it's really hard.
- 1:44I mean, it's, you know, it's one of those things where, you know,
- 1:48it's, it's high stakes work.
- 1:50But the fact is, it's like, there's a reason why we engage
- 1:53in this high stakes work.
- 1:54It's because we want to enjoy the life.
- 1:56And, and so really the way that you have to do it, you just got to find the time.
- 2:00Um, you know, just like we find the time to prepare for trial, just like we find
- 2:04the time to talk to our clients, you have to, you have to carve out that time and
- 2:09you know, nobody's going to do it for you.
- 2:11And yeah, unfortunately we were in this profession where health and
- 2:15wellness usually takes a backseat.
- 2:17Um, if it's, if it's even in the car.
- 2:20Um, and so, you know, for me, there's, there's those, I had
- 2:25to engage in a lot of efforts.
- 2:26Now, of course, for me, I had, you know, The fortune to have an unfortunate health
- 2:31scare a few years ago, you know, and, you know, when you're sitting there and
- 2:36thinking that your life truly is flashing before your eyes on the kitchen floor,
- 2:40it's sort of, it throws you for a loop.
- 2:43And so, you know, I had that event that sort of triggered my, my, my
- 2:46journey, but now that I'm in it.
- 2:49It allows me to sit here and talk to other lawyers and say, Hey,
- 2:51listen, you got to just look at this.
- 2:52You got to do these things and realize that the amount of time that
- 2:55you put into your work, you should be meeting or exceeding that amount
- 3:00in putting it into your personal life and your health and wellness.
- 3:03So it's just,
- 3:03but you know, it's, it's hard though.
- 3:06You know, what's our schedule?
- 3:07You know, people always ask me like, well, what's your schedule like?
- 3:10And it's like, well, it's, it's different every day.
- 3:12Yes.
- 3:12Right.
- 3:13As a lawyer, what we do, you and I, it's different every day.
- 3:16And then, so it's hard.
- 3:18To be intentional and plan, when am I going to get my meditations in?
- 3:24When am I going to get my workout in?
- 3:26When am I going to get my outdoor activity, which I'm big on
- 3:28these days, is being outdoors.
- 3:30So what are some things that, that you're doing because you're a very healthy dude,
- 3:33even though you have the health scare.
- 3:34If you look at this guy's like Adonis, if we had to pick a Greek
- 3:37God, I don't know about that.
- 3:38I'm trying, man.
- 3:39I'm trying, I'm trying to get this guy to blush.
- 3:40Doesn't work.
- 3:42But like, what are some things that you do where you can help
- 3:45folks with just some advice?
- 3:46So I try on the weekends and first and foremost, you know, my wife is phenomenal.
- 3:54Like she gets it.
- 3:56And so I guess that's, you know, that's the first thing is,
- 3:58you know, Find a good partner.
- 4:01But that being said, she knows that on Saturdays or Sundays.
- 4:06I just need 10 minutes to carve out my week.
- 4:08And so I can kind of look at it.
- 4:10Um, and, and know it's like, okay, like this week, this week has been
- 4:14a difficult week for me to get workouts in just because I had big
- 4:16depots and I had stuff going on.
- 4:18So that'll mean that the workouts will get shifted to the weekend.
- 4:22But if I got that week where I can look at it, um, I try to
- 4:25take advantage of my lunch hour.
- 4:27Um, and that, uh, almost everybody, Is willing to take a lunch hour, so
- 4:33I've made the decision of pre eating.
- 4:36So like 1145 I eat while I'm working so that when noon hits, I get my hour.
- 4:42Oh, I like that.
- 4:43Yeah, my team knows it.
- 4:44So, you know, I've had that with the team.
- 4:46It's like, hey, unless it's an emergency situation, noon to one is no go.
- 4:52Nothing gets scheduled, nothing gets done there.
- 4:54And so my team knows that and I can pre plan for it.
- 4:58So sometimes I don't eat at 1145.
- 5:00Let's say, for example, it hits me and I can't do it.
- 5:02Well, then I maybe shift that workout to a rucking workout
- 5:06where I'll throw my weighted backpack on and I'll walk and eat.
- 5:09So that changes the workout plan.
- 5:11If I've got my food, I'll swim, I'll run, I'll ride the bike.
- 5:15Maybe I'll get a workout in at home, those types of things.
- 5:18So that was something I did is carve out lunch hour for that because it's
- 5:23hard for me to get up in the morning.
- 5:25To work out because my kids get up early.
- 5:28My son.
- 5:28My son is
- 5:29up.
- 5:29How was your youngest?
- 5:30He said he's four and he's an alarm clock if he sleeps in past six o'clock.
- 5:34That's a sleep That's it's almost that's
- 5:36like the magic number exactly exactly like today.
- 5:38I was able to get up.
- 5:39I was up for 45 days I got a workout in at 5 a.
- 5:41m.
- 5:41You got like 30 45 minute workout in and It's rare because if I can get up that
- 5:46early and be motivated I can do it But if I if I don't start by 515, I know
- 5:51the kids are up by six, like clockwork.
- 5:52Exactly.
- 5:53Yeah.
- 5:53So for me, I've shifted away from relying on my morning workout.
- 5:58Um, and you know, I don't try to push things off until the evening
- 6:02because, you know, one of two things happens in the evening.
- 6:05One, I'm either tired and I don't have the motivation or,
- 6:09you know, the energy to do it.
- 6:11And I'm also, I work out hard and if my body is not in a position to work out
- 6:15hard, I'm gonna get hurt if I push it.
- 6:17Um, but the other big thing is I like having dinner with my kids.
- 6:21I like sitting down and, you know, sometimes it's just chaos, but it's
- 6:25that, that, that time with them.
- 6:27And by the time they're down for bed, it's eight o'clock and maybe I'll,
- 6:32I'll get something in that evening.
- 6:33But the best time for me is that lunch
- 6:35hour.
- 6:35Yeah.
- 6:36There's, for me, there's no way after.
- 6:39Like 5 p.
- 6:39m.
- 6:40I just can't do it.
- 6:40Like it's just kid time and I'm tired.
- 6:43Well, let's talk about, let's take a switch and talk about preventative stuff.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:46Because I know both you and I go to the same clinic in Denver.
- 6:49Yep.
- 6:49Um, and I think it's one of the best things I've ever done.
- 6:53If somebody forced me, like you got to go do this and we did it.
- 6:56My wife and I, and I love it.
- 6:58Good.
- 6:58Um, so why don't you tell people about that preventative
- 7:01medicine and how you're using it.
- 7:03Yeah.
- 7:03I mean, it's, it's, it's a, it's a gift that I had an
- 7:06opportunity to meet Chad, Dr.
- 7:07Prosimak.
- 7:08He runs Resilience Code and he works directly with Jeffrey Boone, who's a
- 7:12cardiologist, um, Boone Heart Clinic.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:15And, and these are guys that, you know, this is cutting edge,
- 7:19cutting, cutting edge stuff.
- 7:20And I, I didn't realize how much testing was available for us until I
- 7:28got the testing and it's it's shocking how Reactive medicine is for us.
- 7:35You know, we live in the greatest country in the world and we have a
- 7:39reactive medicine that basically says we're not going to deal with anything
- 7:43until Something bad illness has set in.
- 7:46Chronic illness has set in and we are now not preventing anything.
- 7:50We are just baking.
- 7:51We're figuring out how you can live longer with chronic illness
- 7:54and that's just not a way to live.
- 7:55So what I've done with this is I've been seeing Chad and Dr.
- 7:58Boone now for, it'll be three years.
- 8:00Yeah.
- 8:00Three years in December.
- 8:02You know, um, got the blood work done, figured out, you know, what was
- 8:05going on with a lot of different stuff and just kind of got on the path.
- 8:10And I've got, I'm healthier now.
- 8:12I mean, I was a college soccer player and I'm in better shape now
- 8:14than I was when I was, it's funny.
- 8:15I feel that way too.
- 8:16It's 19 years old.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:17You know, could I, am I physically able to do the things that I could put on 19?
- 8:22No.
- 8:23But if you were to put me on, you know, 19-year-old me, now
- 8:2819-year-old, me next to 47-year-old me.
- 8:30Um, 47 year old me is going to be in better physical condition.
- 8:34I might not be as fast as 19 year old me, but
- 8:36I'm in better shape.
- 8:38And like we do the same thing.
- 8:40And you know, one thing is a preventative, it like makes sure the
- 8:45plaque in your arteries and things like jelly and it just dissipates.
- 8:48Um, I'm on something called Repatha.
- 8:50Then my doctor put me on as preventative and Dr.
- 8:52Poon.
- 8:53And like we went on the, you know, checking your hormone
- 8:56panels, all these other things.
- 8:57So I actually tried the weight loss ozempic for one
- 9:00week and it made me so sick.
- 9:01Okay.
- 9:02That I cannot do it
- 9:03right.
- 9:03I was like, yeah, that's not for me.
- 9:04But we, I, for the first time in the past few weeks, I started
- 9:06testosterone injections, right?
- 9:08Mm-Hmm . And I feel amazing, right?
- 9:09Like, 'cause it was a low score and I was like, you know, 'cause
- 9:11I'm taking a lot of stress.
- 9:13Well, you're what, 44?
- 9:1444?
- 9:1444?
- 9:15Yeah.
- 9:15I mean,
- 9:16yeah, right around that age.
- 9:17Because they say that's a critical age where you start
- 9:18to age is like 45 and then 60.
- 9:20And I felt it, you know, it's like I'm working on a lot, but not a lot
- 9:23of energy, not a lot of results.
- 9:24And I eat pretty good, just, you got kids though, you're eating chicken
- 9:28nuggets and scraping food, right?
- 9:29And it's hard.
- 9:30So I felt a big change with that kind of stuff.
- 9:32And you know, they, they reevaluate, you do blood panels, more physicals and be
- 9:36able to figure out what's working for you.
- 9:38Cause everybody's different.
- 9:38Exactly.
- 9:39I mean, I've got, I've had more blood drawn in the last three years than I
- 9:42think in the first 44 years of my life.
- 9:44And I mean, I think this is one of the things that, you know, The way that
- 9:48medicine is set up in our country right now, it's sort of, it's almost like a four
- 9:52letter word to talk about medications.
- 9:55And it's, it's, these are the things that I think we have to realize that as, as
- 9:58human beings, there are a select few of us that are genetically gifted that we don't
- 10:04develop chronic illness until we're in our 70s, And those are the people that live,
- 10:08you know, you talk about these blue zones, you know, like Loma Linda and Sardinia.
- 10:12And these are people that just, you know, they, something's going on with them.
- 10:15It's, well, it's, it's genetics.
- 10:17Well, unfortunately, 98 percent of us don't have those genetics.
- 10:19And the fact is that chronic illness starts setting in, in
- 10:21our twenties, we don't know about it because it's a slow process.
- 10:25So we get into our forties guys like you and I, And we're still maintaining.
- 10:29And then we get a bunch of blood drawn and it's like, Oh my God, like, Hey, you've
- 10:32got a B levels that are through the roof.
- 10:34And I'll be, I'm a, your cholesterol is under control.
- 10:36But there's this little thing called LP little lay that nobody talks about.
- 10:39That's like the culprit.
- 10:40Like you hear about people that have had heart attacks in their thirties,
- 10:43forties and fifties and they've died.
- 10:45And you're like, what happens?
- 10:46It's like, well, there's this little thing called LP little
- 10:47lay that nobody tests for that.
- 10:49It's the silent killer.
- 10:50You know, and you find these things out and it, There has to be a proactive
- 10:54approach to it and, you know, testing and medications and, you know, for a
- 10:57long time, I was like, I don't need this.
- 10:59I just, you know, diet, diet can help.
- 11:01But the fact is, is that you're not gonna be able to fight off chronic
- 11:04illness if you're predisposed to it.
- 11:05So you've got to know, and this is where we can get the blood draws.
- 11:08You go on the medications and you feel better.
- 11:10And yes, I'm 47 and I do testosterone supplementation as well.
- 11:14Because.
- 11:16I'm 47 and guess what?
- 11:17I don't need the testosterone of a 20 year old, but the body
- 11:21still wants it and still needs it.
- 11:23And so I don't think we need to be as afraid of going down that
- 11:28path, but we have to be educated.
- 11:30And if you don't want to do it, that's okay.
- 11:31But you know, the ignorance is bliss stuff is.
- 11:34is not me
- 11:35anymore.
- 11:35And
- 11:36yeah, and I've learned to a dog.
- 11:37I was so hesitant just for some, no, I don't know.
- 11:39It was a macho thing or like, I don't need that.
- 11:41I'm not going to talk about it.
- 11:41I'm not going to do it.
- 11:42It's like, well, why not?
- 11:44And then, you know, cause my wife's very preventative.
- 11:46She's been doing this stuff for a long time.
- 11:48That's, you know, when she speaks on it and does those things.
- 11:50And then I finally listened to her and I feel a lot better.
- 11:53So thanks Chrissy.
- 11:54Cause I finally listened to you.
- 11:55And you know, a lot more like she provides me like different supplements,
- 11:58different stuff to take and um, you know, and it's a game changer.
- 12:02It is, especially for.
- 12:04Sometimes when we're in trial, for instance, you can only do so much.
- 12:08You're at the mercy of the court schedule and you still have
- 12:11life before and after court.
- 12:13And it's hard.
- 12:14What are some things that you Dan shard do during trial that helps
- 12:17you still be health and wellness?
- 12:20It's sort of, it takes that, that, that weekend plan.
- 12:24And I just expanded out to the, to the course of trial.
- 12:26Like, like if I, and, and, and, uh, I'm human.
- 12:29Trust me.
- 12:30There's, there's, there are trials.
- 12:31And, you know, when, when Jacob and Eva and Ansley listened to this podcast, the
- 12:36trial we had in Oakland, yeah, there were a couple of nights where we ordered pizza.
- 12:39Like, I'm still a human, but it's, it's sort of like, my wife always says,
- 12:44you know, everything in moderation.
- 12:45And so, um, you know, if you can stick to it during trial, like trial, the
- 12:51rules get, you know, Relax a little bit because it's like, okay, I, I can't get
- 12:55the lunchtime workouts in because I'm prepping witnesses for the afternoon and
- 12:58when I get home for the evening, you know, I probably need to prep for tomorrow.
- 13:02Um, the one thing that I do stick to in trial is sleep.
- 13:08And it's funny, I agree with that because people are always
- 13:10like, oh, I sacrifice sleep.
- 13:12Um, sleep is probably, so sleep is my workout during trial and, and
- 13:17so it's, I mean, I, I will try to work out like, you know, Once Friday
- 13:20afternoon is the session is done.
- 13:23Yeah, I will crank out and I'll get a good hard run in or a good
- 13:26hard workout Friday after session.
- 13:28And I will work out on Saturday and Sunday, but during the week,
- 13:31Sunday night to Thursday night.
- 13:34Sleep is the workout and, and I'm talking and you may fall out of your chair.
- 13:38I'm talking eight hours of sleep.
- 13:41No, I
- 13:42look, I agree.
- 13:42A hundred percent.
- 13:43Like I'm, you know, as soon as I get done with most people, travelers,
- 13:45I don't know why they do that.
- 13:46Like they want to burn the midnight oil to those things.
- 13:48Like, no, I'm more productive in the morning.
- 13:49So what I do is I, after court, I do my witness prep schedule, do,
- 13:55you know, prepare my PowerPoint to where I know I'm going with closing.
- 13:58Talk to my team and I'm off the grid by 730.
- 14:00Yeah,
- 14:01I'm usually nine.
- 14:02I'm a
- 14:029pm
- 14:04to 5am.
- 14:05I know I'm going to get up at five.
- 14:07I know that what's going to happen is I will snap awake and so that's why I know
- 14:10I got to go to bed a little earlier.
- 14:13Um, and so yeah, that's sort of my, and unless I'm in Santa Cruz, I usually will
- 14:19stay like even if I'm going to try a case in San Jose, I'll stay in San Jose.
- 14:23Um, and my wife and family, like that's their sacrifice and.
- 14:28Um, you know, and I appreciate the support that I get from them.
- 14:31I mean, I FaceTime with them every night, but they know that that's
- 14:33what's going to happen so that I can do, get the work in, get the sleep in.
- 14:37Um, because yeah, I mean, it's, if you're doing what we're doing, and
- 14:43even if you're, you know, a new trial lawyer, if you are trying
- 14:47a case, you're prepared enough.
- 14:49Like, I know you may not feel that you're prepared enough, but you're prepared
- 14:51enough that you do not need to be burning.
- 14:55Yeah.
- 14:55Cause then you start overthinking.
- 14:56You're overthinking it.
- 14:57Yeah.
- 14:57And then you just can't do that.
- 14:58But you know, you do need to have technical prep stuff for the next day.
- 15:01I do agree on, but yeah.
- 15:03And that's why the preparation I think is, is key to that.
- 15:05But I'm big thing.
- 15:06I have to get sleep and I overly hydrate.
- 15:09Yes.
- 15:09I drank a lot of water and I tried to like make a big, big point of that.
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:13Throughout the, uh, when I get up throughout the day,
- 15:15nothing I've been doing is.
- 15:17I just get up and chug like three glasses of water before I do anything.
- 15:20Just pre hydrate, yeah.
- 15:22It's not so stupid or easy, but it
- 15:24works.
- 15:24Yeah, I mean there's nothing, I shouldn't say there's nothing wrong with drinking a
- 15:27ton of water, obviously, you know, there's aspects, but when I say, you know, you
- 15:32get up and you drink a couple glasses of water, that's going to cause you no harm.
- 15:35I mean, and that's, it's, it's, yeah, it's, you gotta do it.
- 15:40And I mean, cause this is the thing we don't think about.
- 15:41And I know for me, if I don't drink enough, I'm going to get
- 15:44headaches and then my performance goes down and it just, it's that.
- 15:47That cycle.
- 15:48And so, you know, the other thing too, I mean, I, and I don't drink anymore
- 15:52anyway, but even when I was still a drinker, I didn't drink during trial.
- 15:56Um, I used to have that, but it was more of a superstition for me.
- 15:58But now what I do is I have at least one drink every day sandwiches for you.
- 16:02She still does.
- 16:03When she was, when she was at, we were in orange County
- 16:05office, we'd make one every time.
- 16:05But I had to say, I have a tuna fish sandwich and care the same thing.
- 16:09Same thing.
- 16:10That's my trial diet.
- 16:11Yeah.
- 16:12No, but the thing is everything in moderation and I've never built,
- 16:14I would say the SIF is the only one that operates in absolutes.
- 16:17So you can't absolutely say this is the best thing and to cut this out or
- 16:20do that, do what works for you, man.
- 16:22Well, that's exactly
- 16:23it.
- 16:23It's sort of the same thing we were talking about before.
- 16:24You know, you and I, you and I, I mean the, the testing and the steps that
- 16:29we've undertaken for our own health and wellness, you know, is towards the apex.
- 16:34I mean, we're, we're, we're, we're, we're on Everest with this
- 16:36and not everybody can get there.
- 16:37And I'm not saying that everybody has to be there.
- 16:39But for me, and what I tell almost everybody that I come across,
- 16:43it's like you will find out so much through your blood and the
- 16:49tests are not that expensive.
- 16:50Yeah, it's a little bit of an inconvenience, but they're not that
- 16:52expensive and get that knowledge
- 16:55and then you can decide and make sure you go to somebody that can actually
- 16:57know the right panels and what to look for and to be preventative.
- 17:00Like, you know, prostate cancer runs in my family.
- 17:02I get it checked all the time to make sure, you know, and like I
- 17:05even had my seven year old daughter.
- 17:07My seven year old daughter who's adopted, so we don't have the privilege of having
- 17:10like the genealogy and stuff like that.
- 17:12And so we have to, we have to know.
- 17:14So I had her tested recently and it was, you know, she hates
- 17:16needles, it was traumatic.
- 17:17But like, I had someone detailed read all those panels to see because we don't
- 17:21know some genetic markers and thank God everything's fantastic, you know, and
- 17:24there's some little things that she can do that shouldn't be a game changer for her.
- 17:28But why not do that with children?
- 17:29You know, um, there's nothing, I mean, it's, yeah, it's
- 17:33ignorance is, it's not bliss anymore.
- 17:37I mean, it's dangerous and it's like, I know the genetic markers that I have.
- 17:42And I know the, you know, the congenital defect that I had in my heart that
- 17:46created all these issues that.
- 17:48I didn't think I had.
- 17:49So
- 17:49now
- 17:49I've got
- 17:50this
- 17:50insight.
- 17:50Especially a collegiate soccer player.
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:52I never think I would have known, right.
- 17:54Not only that,
- 17:55but a technical, I mean, dude, I, in my twenties, I probably logged between.
- 18:00five and 10, 000 scuba dives.
- 18:01And many of those were long decompression dives.
- 18:04Like there was a lot of things that should have happened to me because of the
- 18:07condition that I had that didn't happen.
- 18:09And it didn't catch up with me until I was 44 and I'm still in great shape when I was
- 18:1244, but it's like finding that now I know.
- 18:15So like when my kids get to an age where they can be tested for not only the
- 18:19genetic issues, but possibly congenital issues, thankfully the congenital issue
- 18:23is not hereditary, just, just bad luck.
- 18:25You know, it has nothing to do with anything my parents did
- 18:27wrong or anything my parents had.
- 18:29But it's a condition that I now know exists.
- 18:32So yeah, my kids will get tested for that.
- 18:33They'll get tested for the genetic abnormalities.
- 18:35Hopefully, everything that's that's there can either be treated,
- 18:42you can be proactive with it.
- 18:43And if it's if it's not, I should say maybe cured, but if it can't be cured,
- 18:48it can be managed through medication.
- 18:50And, you know, this is, this is sort of the way medicine, I think,
- 18:54should be proceeding forward.
- 18:55Because if you're waiting for the chronic disease to catch up with you and then
- 18:59you're treating it, all you're really doing is living with chronic disease.
- 19:03Maybe we should
- 19:03try to
- 19:03prevent
- 19:04it.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05And that's, you know, a lot of our friends now, we have gotten on the plane to take
- 19:09them to the Boone Heart Clinic and Dr.
- 19:11Pressmac.
- 19:12So if you guys are listening, we give a shout out to like, who's, you know,
- 19:14transformed our lives and thank you.
- 19:16So some of the things, you know, advice for our, you
- 19:18know, viewers, listeners, etc.
- 19:21Just some practical things you could be doing tomorrow, right?
- 19:24So I'll say, I'm a big into hydration.
- 19:27Everybody knows I drink.
- 19:28I have a bourbon talk show.
- 19:29I still do in moderation, like I know what my limit is, even though we sometimes
- 19:33do four episodes a day and it's a lot.
- 19:35I prepare myself and make sure that we can do that.
- 19:37I'm a big believer in being outside.
- 19:40I think it's, there's a happiness thing to it.
- 19:41I live by the beach.
- 19:42I try to get into the water as much as I can.
- 19:44It's very therapeutic and calming for me.
- 19:46Every time I go, I'm like, this is the best thing I could be doing.
- 19:48And it's 15 degrees warmer down here than it is.
- 19:50Oh dude, it's been warm.
- 19:53For the Pacific, it's been warm here.
- 19:54But it's been nice.
- 19:55Um, but I think that, and also preventative medicine, I'm actually,
- 19:58you know, on a regimen of medication.
- 20:00It's not a crazy ton, but it's, I've noticed a substantial change.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:03In mood, appearance, happiness.
- 20:06That's it.
- 20:06Yeah.
- 20:07I mean, I would agree with all those things.
- 20:09And then putting in the one thing that we haven't really talked, touched
- 20:12on directly, but it's sort of, is overlaying everything, is, is the
- 20:16mental health component of things.
- 20:18Two things that I started to implement and again, I'm human I don't I wish I
- 20:24could tell you I do this 100 percent of the time, but I try my best is
- 20:28Two additional things that I've implemented is gratitude journals,
- 20:31which I take five minutes a day and it just basically write down What are the
- 20:35three great things that happened today?
- 20:37What are three things that I learned and what would make tomorrow great and it
- 20:41takes you five minutes You can just go on Amazon and type in gratitude journal you
- 20:45write it down and the other thing too And you'll love this and Christina love this.
- 20:49I know Monique loves it When I'm done with work, whether I work
- 20:53at home or work in the office The first time I see my wife or my kids.
- 20:59It doesn't matter what kind of day I had It's always a positive comment
- 21:04Yeah, I
- 21:05find whatever pot I could have had terrible day.
- 21:08It could have lost a summary joke.
- 21:09Something could have happened during work that made the day terrible.
- 21:12The first thing that comes out of my mouth to my wife and kids
- 21:15is something positive and it
- 21:17frames up the rest of the day.
- 21:19And we do the same thing when you wake up in the morning.
- 21:21Yes.
- 21:21Every big hugs, big hugs, big love is what we do.
- 21:24And then positivity, right?
- 21:26If, cause like today, this morning, my four year old came out, she was, She
- 21:30came down really upset and crying because my two year old got up and put on the
- 21:34new Descendants movie And she's like, how could you start this without me?
- 21:36There's this whole big thing That's we're gonna go back up to your room have a
- 21:40little reset that little you time and she came down ten minutes later It's a daddy.
- 21:43I'm sorry I gave a hug and was just changed change it But if you let that
- 21:48that come out the way like I like that man, that's it's those little things
- 21:51and that's as Pammy honestly, it's like Kids like they take their cues from us
- 21:57and it's just like if we make a big deal about it and I work on it cause I've
- 22:00got a four and seven year old as well.
- 22:02And in the seven, the seven year old is takes things personally.
- 22:05And if the four year old and the four year old, he's a boy, he doesn't care.
- 22:08He's just, everything is chaos.
- 22:10We're all four
- 22:11year olds inside.
- 22:11Yes, exactly.
- 22:13And so, you know, they take our cues and if we make a big deal about
- 22:16something, then they make a big deal.
- 22:17Whereas if we take that, it's like, Hey, let's just do a reset.
- 22:21And yeah, it's usually better.
- 22:22We're the ones, the adults that let it linger.
- 22:24And yeah, we
- 22:25overreact.
- 22:26And I would, I would actually, I tell my children, I apologize for
- 22:28overreacting or being this way.
- 22:30And I always tell them, don't, I've, there was this one book.
- 22:32I never read it, but it's called don't sweat the small stuff.
- 22:34I tell them all the time, guys, this doesn't matter in
- 22:36the grand scheme of things.
- 22:37Look what's happened.
- 22:37We, I show them our cases all the times.
- 22:39They'll call, this is the horror and things that can happen.
- 22:41We have a blessed life.
- 22:42This is not.
- 22:43It's not having this toy that I may be able to share.
- 22:45Not a big deal.
- 22:46Is it right?
- 22:47It doesn't work all the time, but you're probably batting
- 22:5010 percent on that one.
- 22:52Maybe lower,
- 22:52but I'll take the 10%.
- 22:54But I want to thank Dan.
- 22:55Dan is a spearheading at Lottie Graw this year.
- 22:58The health and wellness track has a lot of good speakers and
- 23:00talent coming to help with that.
- 23:01Education like this and actually workshop ideas with people on how they can get
- 23:05better Um, and I know dan's at santa cruz.
- 23:08He's a fantastic trial lawyer He's on attorney share.
- 23:11You can drop them cases on there.
- 23:12You can find them.
- 23:13Um at char silva.
- 23:15com What are what other ways can they reach out to you?
- 23:17So I also do work with nick nick rallies from tl4j trialers for justice.
- 23:21I do that Um, and so yeah, this this is this fall is going to be kind of a
- 23:25busy fall Um, i'm not only going to be doing the health and wellness track at
- 23:29laudigrass I'm also going to be teaching at TLU, Travelers University in Vegas.
- 23:35Um, we're going to be doing, um, case framing and sort of getting
- 23:40people to sort of the plug and play.
- 23:42You know, it's, I think one of the things that lawyers lose sight of is,
- 23:47you know, they get these cases and they just don't know what to do with them.
- 23:49So we're going to take the approach of how we case frame, but also there's
- 23:52always going to be that overarching overlay of, you know, Humanity, health
- 23:57and wellness, and, and, and utilize.
- 23:59So if anybody's
- 23:59been, I've been to the trial by human workshops.
- 24:02They just had one in Montana recently.
- 24:03I've been in the one in Santa Barbara.
- 24:05Barbara, you've been in Atlanta.
- 24:07You've been in Boston.
- 24:08You've been in Iowa.
- 24:09I think we did Des Moines, yeah.
- 24:10And then, yeah, we did Montana.
- 24:11And next year, fingers crossed, we're going to do Santa Cruz.
- 24:15Love it.
- 24:15Um, yeah.
- 24:16I was just
- 24:16talking to Jacob this weekend.
- 24:17He was at my house to see if we can do in Ireland.
- 24:19Oh, okay.
- 24:20Yeah.
- 24:21Which would be pretty cool.
- 24:21I used
- 24:21to live there, you know.
- 24:22No way.
- 24:23I did.
- 24:23We'll talk about that off camera.
- 24:24Dan's an interesting dude.
- 24:25I didn't know he was.
- 24:26Deep scuba diving, whatever the crap you're doing, but trial by humans.
- 24:30Fantastic.
- 24:30As they teach you how to be a better human and a trial lawyer.
- 24:33And I've been through the workshops before.
- 24:35Phenomenal.
- 24:36And Dan's an instructor there.
- 24:37So you can find them a trial by human, reach out to Dan shard directly.
- 24:41Yep.
- 24:41And then what's your, uh, contact info for folks want to find you in the best
- 24:44way?
- 24:45I don't, I'm, I'm old school.
- 24:46I don't do social media at all.
- 24:47Um, you can text me.
- 24:48Sorry if I put my number on it.
- 24:50Go for it.
- 24:50Go for it.
- 24:51It's a 408.
- 24:51540 8343.
- 24:55Do not call me.
- 24:56I will not answer.
- 24:57I'm the same way.
- 24:57Never call me.
- 24:58Text me and let me know who you are, what you need.
- 25:01I'm really good at getting back to people on text.
- 25:04And I will definitely say that is true.
- 25:06Well, Dan Sharpe, thanks for coming on this episode of Justice Team Network.
- 25:09I think it's very informative and I really enjoyed it.
- 25:11I picked up some tips myself.
- 25:13Thanks, man.
- 25:13And now he's going to host Tips and Sips here at Justice HQ.
- 25:16Yeah, we
- 25:16got to do that.
- 25:17Thank you very much.
- 25:18Thank you.
- 25:19Thank you guys.
