- 4:24son and tell him to get in the comments in the.
- 4:27Comments. That name looks a little
- 4:31different. That name looks very familiar
- 4:32though. But welcome back boys.
- 4:34How y'all been the last week or so?
- 4:38Man, you know what it was? It was nice having another
- 4:43Saturday that was stress free, just watching college football,
- 4:46not worried about whether the Hokies were going to take care
- 4:48of business or not. And we get another one this
- 4:50week. So that's going to be be be
- 4:53pretty interesting. What was the what was what was
- 4:57y'all's favorite game of the weekend?
- 4:59Let's let's start there. Oh.
- 5:02Oh oh Sheldon, y'all got one? I'm I'm like, I'm I'm trying to
- 5:06inflect on what was Alabama. Yeah, Alabama, South Carolina
- 5:15was pretty good. I watched that.
- 5:18Tennessee, Arkansas was pretty good.
- 5:22Tennessee, Florida. I mean, Tennessee, Florida,
- 5:26Tennessee, Florida was pretty good.
- 5:27So I mean, you kind of kind of came down to what I thought.
- 5:32Sheldon, you got 1. Yeah, I kind of I, I missed the
- 5:35early afternoon games because I went outside and was able to
- 5:38touch some grass, wanted to hike South of Waynesboro, so got
- 5:41outside a little bit. So, but yeah, not, not that it
- 5:44was a good game, but I enjoyed watching Boise State just to
- 5:46watch Ashton Gente. I've kind of been on the the
- 5:49Gente hype train. So I stayed up till 2:00 AM
- 5:51watching the Boise State Hawaii game to watch.
- 5:53That go off. For 200 yards, so I enjoyed
- 5:56that. Yeah, I got, I got to go with
- 5:59that Oregon, Ohio State game. And, you know, you got to love
- 6:03the the call to throw a 12th man out there and run a little clock
- 6:07that, that that's, that's the way to, you know, play some 3D
- 6:10chess out there. All right, you like that one.
- 6:14I, I enjoyed watching the Penn State USC game A because when
- 6:19that game went to overtime and USC didn't score, I knew I had
- 6:24won that one. And I think that was the only
- 6:26one I got right on the pickums. Not sure.
- 6:28We just lost Tally. I don't know where he went, but
- 6:30we'll get back to him in just a second here.
- 6:33But mine, mine, LSU, Ole Miss lived up.
- 6:36LSU, Ole Miss lived up Saturday night, Death Valley, Jason's
- 6:39pick went to overtime. Lane Kiffin loses another one.
- 6:45And now basically they're just about out of it.
- 6:50They're just about out of the playoffs unless everything
- 6:52breaks perfectly. We've been talking about
- 6:55everybody said the playoffs going to not make the regular
- 6:57season fun. Well, to me, it's making it
- 7:00better because right now Ole Miss is not out, but Ole Miss
- 7:04cannot lose again. Ole Miss cannot lose again.
- 7:08I heard him pop back in. There he is, Tally.
- 7:11He's loading. He's loading.
- 7:13He's loading Tally. My buddy Phil sent me a message
- 7:16saying we got to get Tally some Starlink and he's like you.
- 7:21Know, I don't think it worked. I don't think it matters, man.
- 7:23I think you don't think it matters.
- 7:25It it worked, it works fine until I get on here and then it
- 7:27wants to. It starts acting crazy.
- 7:29Somebody is pushing a little button or something.
- 7:32They don't want me to talk. They don't.
- 7:33Want to talk all man? UVA UVA fans, man, they messing
- 7:37man and they're there you go. There you got to.
- 7:39Get on them all. Right.
- 7:40Well, it is Tell the Truth Tuesday and unfortunately,
- 7:43Shelton, we're not. Unfortunately, it's fortunately
- 7:46Shelton could not join us last week.
- 7:48He was taking care of some business.
- 7:50So Shelton's got a few little things that he wants to share
- 7:54with us. We're going to call it Shelton's
- 7:56Corner and Tell the Truth Tuesday.
- 7:59If y'all haven't go key play.com.
- 8:02Shelton wrote a hell of an article last week concerning a
- 8:06lot of stuff he wanted to bring up tonight.
- 8:07But Shelton, we're going to give you the floor man.
- 8:10Yeah, so I I talked about this in my article for the key play
- 8:13this week. I like you mentioned, you want
- 8:14to go check that out and become a member too when I subscribe.
- 8:18But so First off, you know, I think we've seen car in drones
- 8:21develop a lot as a password this year.
- 8:23You know, he started off pretty rough, but since then he's he's
- 8:26improved a lot since that game against Marshall.
- 8:28You look at the overall PFF numbers, pretty kind to him,
- 8:3124th overall highest rated quarterback in the country,
- 8:33Kyron Jones 41st passing. Now to me that's a big deal
- 8:37because that's a sixty spot improvement from Ray was last
- 8:39year. You know, he was not
- 8:41particularly efficient as a passer last year and certainly
- 8:43the the advanced metrics weren't kind to him there, but the
- 8:47graders have liked him this year.
- 8:48And So what I want to do is figure out why.
- 8:50So a few things. First of all, Kyron's turnover
- 8:54worthy play percentage is down a little bit from last year.
- 8:56So he's making good decisions with the football.
- 8:58He has been pressured a lot. He's top ten and most times
- 9:01pressured as a percentage of drop backs, but he has 11
- 9:06throwaways, which is 1/3 most I believe in the country.
- 9:09So he has a really good ability to avoid the disaster plays, get
- 9:13rid of all he needs to and he's done a good job of minimizing
- 9:17the the number of sacks relative to the times he's been
- 9:19pressured. So that's been a huge help for
- 9:22this offense in terms of avoiding those big negative
- 9:23plays. The other thing is with Kyron in
- 9:27terms of intermediate throws, so I talked about this a lot, he
- 9:30grades up over 90 on PFF on intermediate throws.
- 9:33Remember that's 10 to 19 yards down the field.
- 9:36So why is that a big deal? Well basically intermediate
- 9:39throws are the result of post snap decisions.
- 9:41So you have to go through your progressions, diagnose the
- 9:45coverage in contrast to deep balls and throws that are behind
- 9:48the line of scrimmage, which are typically they're not always the
- 9:51result of a pre snap decisions. Those are usually predetermined.
- 9:54So the fact that he's improved a lot on those intermediate
- 9:57throws, I think is a really, really good sign.
- 9:58And then we saw again, Stanford, you know, he was more
- 10:00comfortable scanning the pocket, moving around the pocket,
- 10:03manipulating the pocket with his feet and just having the
- 10:06confidence to scan the field and, and stand tall and make
- 10:10good throws. And I think that's a, that's a
- 10:12sign of really impressive maturation there.
- 10:16So good job for for Karen there. The other thing is I talked
- 10:20about pressure rate. Tech has done a great job of
- 10:23getting to the quarterback this year.
- 10:24They're D lined this year as a team, they ranked second in sack
- 10:27rate, 12%, seventh in a pressure rate and 21 total sacks as a
- 10:31team, which is I believe second most among FBS teams against FBS
- 10:35opponents. So APR has been awesome, Peoples
- 10:40has been awesome, even Wilfred Renee, I think is has shown a
- 10:43lot of growth on the D line spot.
- 10:45So and I could go through all the numbers you want to, but
- 10:47really Long story short, the D line has done a great job making
- 10:50life hell for buzz and quarterbacks.
- 10:51And I think it's gonna it's gonna sustain itself throughout
- 10:53the course of the season. So I did have some other notes
- 10:56on Beige Hall 2, but I'm gonna get to I'm gonna get to that a
- 10:58little bit later when we kind of progress through gift some
- 11:00awards. But but that's kind of what I
- 11:02talked about. Basically Chiron, a ton of
- 11:04growth we've seen this year. And then Zacksburg, man, it's
- 11:07back. Zacksburg is back.
- 11:11I love Zachsburg being back and when we can lead from that,
- 11:17pressuring the quarterback standpoint, that makes the whole
- 11:20back end work a whole lot better, makes their job easier,
- 11:23and it makes the, you know, the the defensive chance of forcing
- 11:28turnovers go up significantly. Anytime you can rush the
- 11:32quarterback, make them go faster through their reads, make them
- 11:35get rid of the ball when they're not ready, that's only a good
- 11:38thing in terms of turnover. So the more we can keep that up,
- 11:41the better. And you're seeing everybody eat
- 11:44a little bit. Obviously you got APR number,
- 11:47you know #5 in the country and Sachs.
- 11:49But then you, you know, everybody else is doing their
- 11:51part as well. And, and having really no
- 11:54weakness across that defensive line.
- 11:55I think it's really been a big thing for us this year because
- 11:58it's it's kept that pressure even when you, you know, douche
- 12:01kind of shade your protection towards APR's way.
- 12:07Yep. The bigger thing about the
- 12:08intermediary passing thing I think is what just kind of jumps
- 12:12out at me when you were talking about it, Shelton is because
- 12:15that's your 3 to fives because that's the someone is just about
- 12:19there and he's making the right reads.
- 12:22And what that does is over time, eventually, well, the safeties
- 12:26have to stay back, right. Safeties have to stay back.
- 12:28You have to start doing things different defensively like OK,
- 12:31we we are not getting there fast enough to where he's not hitting
- 12:35that I think intermediates what's in the 15 is that an
- 12:38exact 10 to 19. So when you're starting to hit
- 12:42those, especially with the guys who we have with Quan Felton,
- 12:45with Jay Lane, with Jennings, with you put you put the ball in
- 12:49those guys hands 10 yards down the field.
- 12:52It's usually not a 10 yard game. It's usually it borderlines on
- 12:55becoming an explosive play every time because of who they are.
- 12:59And for Kyron that is a great maturation process.
- 13:03It's really good because of what I like hearing about that is it
- 13:06wasn't the the best first three games.
- 13:09He had a little rough start to this season, but up here it's
- 13:12never stopped churning. Mentally, he has not quit.
- 13:15Mentally, you're seeing him get stronger and stronger and that's
- 13:18a great thing to see. Yeah, and, and just to put a bow
- 13:21on that, I I saw Steven mention in the chat they're doing
- 13:23without blitzing. I agree.
- 13:24I haven't seen a ton of blitzes. I saw maybe 11 safety or
- 13:28linebacker blitz against Stanford.
- 13:30But you know, they've done a good job getting home with four.
- 13:32And I think, you know, obviously the rushing stats have been not
- 13:35great. That's probably 1 weak spot of
- 13:37the defense, you know, being able to stop the run.
- 13:39But we, we saw some pretty good run fits against Stanford.
- 13:42It was better, not perfect, but better.
- 13:43And I think for me, if this defense can fit the run at a
- 13:46decent clip, that's going to be able to, that's what's going to
- 13:49take this defense from like a, you know, an average defense to
- 13:52a really good defense because they've already gotten the
- 13:53pressure, they've got the corners, safeties are getting
- 13:55better. They just got to be able to stop
- 13:57the run. Yeah, a lot of.
- 14:00A lot of that rusty yardage has been kind of on those, you know,
- 14:03third down situations. You know, some of that has been
- 14:06on, you know, quarterback scrambles.
- 14:08Obviously we watched what Diego Pavia did in the Vanderbilt game
- 14:13would just consistently getting those third downs on like 8 or
- 14:1610 yard gains. And I think that's really been
- 14:19kind of our Achilles heel is you just the inability to sometimes
- 14:22get off the field on those money downs with a quarterback
- 14:26scramble or or with one of those plays that you're just kind of
- 14:28not necessarily expecting and and get burned and and dinged a
- 14:32little bit there with Tally. Go ahead.
- 14:34I know you're about to say something there.
- 14:35No, you good. I was just going to say, I seen
- 14:37somebody put in essay, they start bringing Spencer off the
- 14:40edge. I said, hey, if we can get him
- 14:41to start getting his quarterback to the ground when he get there,
- 14:45then Zachsburg is really going to be back.
- 14:48It's going to be up, baby. I mean, they said it today when
- 14:51they were talking in the in the press.
- 14:52It's like, you know, we're we're really up there in terms of
- 14:55sacks and, and we could be a whole lot better than we are if
- 14:59if if we finished a couple of those where we were home, you
- 15:02know, a couple of those in against the Miami game.
- 15:05I mean, that was Stanford. If you finish a couple of those
- 15:07and, you know, you probably don't have to come down to a
- 15:10Hail Mary there at the end. So, you know, it's it's
- 15:14definitely back. And and like I said, if you do a
- 15:16couple more things, clean up a little bit of technique there,
- 15:19you you might even be even better.
- 15:21Yeah. Yeah, definitely. 100% and again
- 15:26it was probably mentioned it like not only would we be
- 15:30leading the country, we would be well ahead of people in the
- 15:32country if you took those finished sacks it we'd probably
- 15:35be up five to six and we've missed a lot.
- 15:38So Kevin, what's happening tonight?
- 15:40And again, I'm going to keep putting this up, if you only
- 15:44seen it, 1999. Hit the YouTube, hit that
- 15:47subscribe button, drop a night 1999 on a video on YouTube
- 15:52there. One of this week, next week or
- 15:54the next week, anything before we will not accept.
- 15:57All right, so real quick, we wanted to do some mid season
- 15:59awards and we're going to start with the MVP and I I don't think
- 16:06I don't think anybody else is going to detest this.
- 16:09Our MVP is basically 2. Yep.
- 16:12Any disagreements? The.
- 16:14Only, the only case you can make against him is APR, that that's
- 16:19you. You could.
- 16:20That's the only other case I think you can make.
- 16:22But yeah, I mean Tooten has done everything that you could want
- 16:25from a running back position and more.
- 16:27All right, Sheldon, you said you were holding it.
- 16:30What do you do out on Tooten? Yeah, he was my MVP too.
- 16:34And, and I talked about this in the piece, you know, yards per
- 16:37carry. He's only 86.
- 16:39I think this is sometimes where you got to kind of watch the
- 16:40film and sort of put your your thinking goggles on.
- 16:44He's obviously doing everything he's doing behind a, you know, a
- 16:46fairly limited online and there's a few ways we can look
- 16:49at that. He's forced 33 missed tackles
- 16:51this year, which is 14th most in the country.
- 16:54He ranks top 20 in elusiveness on PFF, which basically grades
- 16:57how well you run independent of blocking.
- 16:59And he's top ten in breakaway yards, so 15 plus carries.
- 17:03So I think on the occasions that he's gone to the second level,
- 17:06he's been extremely explosive. And and one set also that I
- 17:10found is that in terms of yards before contact, tech ranks 108th
- 17:14on average yards per rush before contact after contact the 12th.
- 17:18So that's a pretty massive gap. And I think what it shows is
- 17:21that if this online was able to open up more holes to them on a
- 17:24on a more consistent basis, this would be this would be a crazy,
- 17:28crazy good run game. So I think I think Tune is just
- 17:30tremendously talented. He was certainly one of the more
- 17:33dynamic backs in recent tech history.
- 17:35I know there's been so many good ones and certainly before my
- 17:37time so I can't come in there, but he's he's definitely up
- 17:40there. So you put you put Tootin behind
- 17:45that 2020 offensive line. What's he doing?
- 17:51I mean, I will say I think it was a little bit different
- 17:53schematically, like that was more of a zone, zone line.
- 17:55So I don't know how the pieces would match.
- 17:56But yeah, if you put him behind a really good O line, he would
- 17:59be, I mean, he'd be putting up, you know, Lee sucks numbers like
- 18:03it's it would be crazy. Yeah, I mean, look at him when
- 18:07you talked about the second level, you talked about after
- 18:09that first, that first missed tackle.
- 18:11He does remind me a lot of Herbert in the way he finishes
- 18:14runs after that first broken tackle or once he gets to that
- 18:18lane on the outside, like he runs hard.
- 18:21But he does have that breakaway where you know he's not the
- 18:24fastest 40 wise, but he knows the angles to take and he gets
- 18:27where he needs to be. 100% All right, well, let's move on
- 18:33because we got to move on. We got a lot of stuff to cover
- 18:36tonight and and and I got a feeling this is going to
- 18:39probably vary, but I'm going to kick it to tally first tally all
- 18:43the players. Who, in your opinion, is the
- 18:45most improved player on the tech team up to this point?
- 18:49Most improved player, I don't know, man.
- 18:53I probably would have to go with Wilfred Penne.
- 18:57He has come in and done a great job on the defensive line.
- 19:01You know, we've got some people who we expected to do some some
- 19:05good stuff coming into this season.
- 19:09APR you know, Peebles, you know, even Fuga and Piney was just
- 19:15kind of a guy that was there, but he's actually came in and
- 19:18made a difference. Somebody put Woodson in there.
- 19:22I would have said Woodson, but I think Woodson is more of a
- 19:26breakout kind of player than a improved player because Woodson,
- 19:32we didn't get to see a whole whole bunch of them last year.
- 19:35But I expect Woodson to be a really good player, but he's
- 19:37more of a breakout player than a improved player to me.
- 19:42So I'm going to go with Penne, just kind of help him with that
- 19:45defensive line. Ron Sigler.
- 19:49Most Phillips and to me it's it's close between him and
- 19:53Penne. If you especially we look at the
- 19:55defensive side and I think I go with most just because we needed
- 19:59it, especially when Strowman went down.
- 20:02His play hasn't been perfect. It, it's been inconsistent at
- 20:08times, but seeing where he was last year and seeing kind of how
- 20:12he started the season and the steps he's taken since then, I
- 20:16think we're starting to see that consistency ratchet up and up
- 20:19and up every week. And that's good.
- 20:21That's important because that position, we're so young at that
- 20:23position until Stroman's back in the lineup.
- 20:25And you know, we, we may not, we may not see him back this year
- 20:28at this point. So him taking those steps has
- 20:32been very important for us. Sean, what about you?
- 20:36I went with Moses as well. I think he's improved
- 20:38tremendously. Even just, you know, watching
- 20:39the tape, but looking at numbers too, his PFF grade is up by 14
- 20:42points. His coverage grade when targeted
- 20:46is down like crazy. So I, I think he's been a really
- 20:48stabilizing presence in the in the secondary.
- 20:52Nice. And I'm going to go with this.
- 20:54Me and James in the chat here are agreeing.
- 20:57I think Xavier Chaplin, he is becoming the anchor on that left
- 21:00side. It's becoming to a point you
- 21:04don't worry about him anymore, right?
- 21:05It's like he's going to go out there, he's going to be good in
- 21:08the run blocks. Just a few weeks ago, Shelton
- 21:11brought up on the program. He was the best offensive
- 21:14lineman graded out in the country in PFF, the best one
- 21:18week. That's 132 teams.
- 21:20That's how many lineman is that 600 plus lineman?
- 21:24And he graded the best and it shows his maturation because he
- 21:28was OK last year. And to me, he has went from OK
- 21:32to being above average just about every category.
- 21:35So that's the most improved player.
- 21:40Now, the next one I like, I did a little spin on it here because
- 21:43we got our MVP. You know, we got to keep tuning
- 21:46rolling. We got to improve, guys.
- 21:48We hope to see more out of Wilford, Most and Xavier.
- 21:51But what about this? What is the most improved
- 21:55player? What player must improve the
- 21:58back half of the season? Brian Siegel's laughing, so I'm
- 22:00gonna let him go first. What is the must improve?
- 22:03Must improve. I mean, it's, it's the same guy
- 22:06it's been for the last 2-3 years, man, It's Parker
- 22:09Clements. And you know, I hate to rag on
- 22:14the guy, but at this point, when we look at our ability to just
- 22:18drop back in obvious passing situations, he isn't he is a
- 22:21liability at right tackle. And if he can improve
- 22:27marginally, I think that really puts us in a in a good position
- 22:31down the stretch, especially when we go against teams at the
- 22:34latter half of this schedule like Clemson.
- 22:37And no disrespect to them, but defensively, I mean, UVA to a
- 22:41point, there's going to be people that are going to come
- 22:44after Kyron in the passing game. We got to be ready for that.
- 22:50Tally. So I'll go a little bit of a, a
- 22:52different route with this because I don't think that
- 22:56somebody's name that was just called needs to be on the field
- 22:59anyway. We kind of talked about it
- 23:01earlier, but some of the lineman that we have.
- 23:03And again, I, I get it, you know, at the point you, you just
- 23:07feel you got to have a veteran out there.
- 23:09So it is what it is. But I'm going to go with I'm
- 23:11going to go with Kyron. I'm going to go with Kyron Must
- 23:14improve. Not saying that he is so bad,
- 23:18but I know that we know that he has a a higher cylinder.
- 23:23What we started the season and I'm just judging by what the
- 23:25season is from the beginning throw those first three games in
- 23:29there looked very uncomfortable, probably mainly because of the
- 23:32line, but it's the same line that he had against Miami.
- 23:36It's the same line he had against for the most part
- 23:39against Stanford. And you can see that he's
- 23:42getting comfortable and he's getting back to his old self.
- 23:45He's just doing Chiron things. So I think if he continues to
- 23:48improve the, the, I mean, the Sky's the limit.
- 23:53All of the games that are in front of us, we're just taking
- 23:55it one game at a time. But all of the games in front of
- 23:58us are winnable games. All of games that he can take
- 24:02control of. He has to be the MVP for the
- 24:05rest of the season for us to do what we need to do to get to
- 24:09Charlotte. So I'm going to say Kyra here.
- 24:13Sheldon. I'm going Dorian Strong.
- 24:16I think he's been pretty underwhelming this year.
- 24:18His coverage grade is at a career low.
- 24:21You know, he's been gotten beat a few times and his friend
- 24:24defence grade has also been, you know, pretty, pretty poor.
- 24:27So I think he's a more talented player than what he's what he's
- 24:29shown so far. I just think for whatever
- 24:31reason, he's kind of aggressive here.
- 24:33And if he can get to playing that peak strong level that
- 24:35we're accustomed to, you know, you combine the the pass rides
- 24:38with those lockdown corners. I mean, that's another thing
- 24:40that's kind of keeping this defense from achieving their
- 24:42their maximum ceiling all. Right.
- 24:45And I'm going to throw kind of a, I don't know if you want to
- 24:48call it a breaking pitch, a curveball, but I need Malachi
- 24:51Thomas to be the most improved player because we are leaning on
- 24:55Basil Tooting. We are leaning on Basil Tooting
- 24:58so much that if Malachi can just come in, get 4 1/2 a carry, pop
- 25:04the line, fall forward, we got to take a little pressure off
- 25:08the MVP, just a little pressure. And up to this point, he's only
- 25:12got 23 carries. So, and maybe this is more on
- 25:15the kosher to say, listen, you've got to be willing to give
- 25:18him carries because we know PJ Prolu, he's out.
- 25:20He's probably not coming back. Stroman's probably not coming
- 25:24back. So those two rooms, like the
- 25:25guys who are in those two rooms, they're there a lot of other
- 25:28guys coming back healthy hopefully this week.
- 25:31So that's a good thing. So there it is.
- 25:35We saw some of y'all throw it in the chat.
- 25:37So keep those comments coming about, you know your MVP, your
- 25:42most improved and then your most improved player in the
- 25:45second-half year to keep it up. And as always, we are brought to
- 25:49you by accounts Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood
- 25:52pharmacy located three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 25:56Also, I'm pumping it up a lot and we will continue to pump it
- 25:59up over the next three weeks. We are giving it away.
- 26:01Brian, bring it on the screen here.
- 26:04It's back. There's the pyramid.
- 26:06There you go, right there. Piece of the goal post torn down
- 26:10the 1999 season, the victory over Boston College that locked
- 26:14up the Big East, that locked up the trip to the national
- 26:16championship game. Put 1999 through YouTube.
- 26:20Again, we're going to be very key about this.
- 26:24You have to subscribe to YouTube.
- 26:25You have to put your comment on there 1999 to become eligible.
- 26:30We've already got a bunch of people already entered.
- 26:33Hopefully a lot more over the next few weeks.
- 26:36But as always, every week we turn to knowing the enemy.
- 26:41Last week Brian had to do 2 weeks ago Brian had to get back
- 26:45deep study in the film room. This week, not as much a study
- 26:50as we have some friends of ours coming from the Eagles Weekly
- 26:55and I believe tonight we got Brett from Eagles Weekly.
- 26:58Brett, how are you doing tonight, man?
- 27:01Good. How are you guys?
- 27:03Doing good, doing good. It was for those that don't
- 27:06know, I got to jump on Eagles weekly last night for a little
- 27:09bit. So appreciate Brett jumping on
- 27:12us with us tonight returning the favor.
- 27:15We talked a little bit about how they're still, you know, a
- 27:17little bit of a rivalry there with with the Eagles there and
- 27:22kind of carrying over from the Big East.
- 27:23So appreciate you joining us tonight, Brett.
- 27:26It's AB here and your giveaway feels a little little targeted,
- 27:31but I don't. You know, it just came.
- 27:35So the company shipped it to us. It got here a couple days ago.
- 27:38I was like when we play BC it's from BC, we we got, we got to
- 27:42start it off, we got to kick it off this way.
- 27:44So no shade directly at you, but you know.
- 27:48No, no whatsoever. It's all timing.
- 27:51Now, the alumni for who run this thing, they are alumni of Tech.
- 27:57So they might have been personally targeted to get that
- 28:00on this week because they do watch us on Tuesday night and
- 28:03they knew what we were going to be talking about here.
- 28:05But no shade intentionally. We should.
- 28:08Say no, no, that's a fun. I I remember I was a kid
- 28:11watching watching that that season too.
- 28:14It was a good season for you guys so.
- 28:16And we're just going to put this up real quick.
- 28:18Anybody that throws it over here, is it loud?
- 28:21So Brett, real quick, I know Brian mentioned it's it's you
- 28:24guys are much like us. There is a bunch of y'all
- 28:27running podcasts, doing things. So what's a little bit of
- 28:29background, not only about yourself, but about the Eagles
- 28:32Weekly podcast? Yeah, so I started in.
- 28:37Well, let me backtrack. When I was in college, I was
- 28:41writing articles for our Sports Illustrated section under a guy
- 28:46by the name of AJ Black, who he he really is kind of the leader
- 28:49of our entire space for BC COVID hits.
- 28:53I graduate college, I end up having to get, you know, a
- 28:56regular job. I wasn't able to really break it
- 28:58in, break into journalism, Ended up starting a fan podcast in
- 29:022022, which we kind of parlayed into making a website last year,
- 29:08Eagles daily, Eagles daily.com. And that really kind of took off
- 29:13in its own right. And then this past, this past
- 29:18winter, yeah, this past winter, I ended up getting a, a contract
- 29:23with the Belief Network. So that started out just
- 29:26basketball. And then it rolled over into
- 29:29this summer where we were able to rebrand, start talking
- 29:33football as well as hoop because, you know, the hoop team
- 29:36is, you know, looking a little dreadful this year.
- 29:38So all is welcome to be able to to add football to the
- 29:42repertoire. And we rebranded to Eagles
- 29:44Weekly and here we are today. Nice.
- 29:47So real quick the the ACC poll came out today.
- 29:50We're pick 14th. Where's BC pick?
- 29:53Did you get that 18? Wait a minute.
- 29:57All right in there. Only 80.
- 30:01Yikes. Hey, Curtis.
- 30:02Curtis, I was going to say something about that.
- 30:04I was going. No, no, no, no.
- 30:05I'm glad you did. I was going to wait because we
- 30:08got Brett on here, but Brett, just hold tight for me for just
- 30:10a minute. Hey, whoever's doing our
- 30:12graphics for basketball, we got to do a better job.
- 30:16Because when I'm scrolling through X and I see Virginia
- 30:20Tech picked 14th in in men's and 12th in women, I thought we were
- 30:24fourteen in the nation. Fucking 14th in the ACC.
- 30:30Like come on man, y'all got to do better than that.
- 30:33I was about to get hype. I was about to retreat.
- 30:35I'm not retweeting that shit. Like what are y'all doing man?
- 30:40And I mean, they had a strong picture of that like.
- 30:42They said 12. Coaches pumping their fist.
- 30:47I thought some good shit was happening and then I paid
- 30:49attention. I'm like, oh man, anyway, I was
- 30:53going to bring that up, Curtis, but I just thought about it when
- 30:55you said that. So.
- 30:57Good. Hey, that's the way we roll
- 30:59here, man. That's the way we roll.
- 31:00Well, Brett, good to thank you for joining us and good to hear
- 31:04that you kind of are in the space of the college football
- 31:07world with Boston College and obviously, you know, you're on.
- 31:11You got to give us some info about your BC Eagles.
- 31:14And let's start on the offensive side of the ball.
- 31:17You head coach to me Will longing your OC, but I got a
- 31:20feeling it's a heavy Bill O'Brien case from what you've
- 31:24seen so far this year, what are they bringing to the table just
- 31:27offensively in general? So it's, it has been a little
- 31:31madding, especially the past couple weeks.
- 31:33So really the story for BC, the first, you know, whether it was
- 31:37Florida State, Michigan State, a little bit, a little bit of
- 31:44Western Kentucky, but really like the they've abandoned the
- 31:48run game. Like where they've been most
- 31:50successful was running the football using their quarterback
- 31:53Tommy Castellanos, you know, as a runner, as a playmaker and not
- 31:59really having the emphasis as on him as a passer.
- 32:02And that's kind of where they've kind of veered away from.
- 32:06You know, it's specifically last week.
- 32:07I think Tommy threw the ball 25 to 30 times last week, which is,
- 32:11you know, he he's a good quarterback, but I would say
- 32:16like as a passer, not a great quarterback.
- 32:19Being a gunslinger is not his strong suit.
- 32:21It hasn't been in either season that he's been here.
- 32:25So it has been a little bit worrisome where it's kind of
- 32:27like, you know, where is this run game going to?
- 32:31Especially against Virginia last week, they were 14 nothing.
- 32:35They were moving the ball. So it wasn't as if, you know, BC
- 32:38was getting stuffed in the run game and they had to abandon it
- 32:40and become one-dimensional on offense.
- 32:43So the play calling has been, it's I, I would say it's been
- 32:46very suspect at times, especially with Will Lonning.
- 32:52I think a lot of people are a little frustrated with it.
- 32:54And, you know, there has been talks that Bill O'Brien is going
- 32:57to be kind of, you know, sticking his hands in the
- 33:00proverbial pot a little bit more going forward, which, you know,
- 33:03I wouldn't be upset about it all.
- 33:06Yeah. And I mean, I know historically
- 33:07Bill O'Brien has definitely been kind of a run first guy.
- 33:10So it's going to be interesting to see if, you know, he does
- 33:12start dipping his toes back in there a little bit.
- 33:14And whether or not you see some of that that percentage kind of
- 33:18go in your favor. I know you know, a game like
- 33:20Missouri, I think, you know, Castellanos threw I think like
- 33:2438 times. That's probably even though we
- 33:26had a pretty good game overall there.
- 33:27That's probably not what you want to see.
- 33:29No. And especially with with that
- 33:32game, it really shows you that when he throws the ball deep
- 33:36down field and really looks to stretch the field, he struggles.
- 33:39Even he did it against you guys last year at home in the first
- 33:43couple series of the game when he had a couple picks in the
- 33:45first quarter. When he's looking to really go
- 33:48over the top, he's not as successful.
- 33:52He's a lot more better, you know, in the short intermediate
- 33:55routes. They've really been utilizing
- 33:58Tray, Sean Ward out of the backfield on wheel routes from
- 34:01the running back position. And that's been a massive
- 34:03success for them. They've kind of gotten away from
- 34:06it. You know, we'll see on, I was
- 34:08about to say Saturday on Thursday, wow, on Thursday, if
- 34:10they kind of look to get back to that to really what works for
- 34:13them. But yeah, you're very spot on
- 34:16with, you know. Kind of 40 throws a game for
- 34:19Tommy is not what you want. What you really want is to take
- 34:22those throws down and get him more designed runs.
- 34:25You know, you want to have him touching the ball 40 times, but
- 34:29not not looking to throw at that many.
- 34:31It's, it's just, it's, it's not the type of quarterback he is.
- 34:34Yeah, you still want the offense to run through him, but not in
- 34:37in a in a drop back standpoint where you're slinging it around
- 34:40that much. So you talked a little bit about
- 34:42Tommy. Let's let's just focus on the
- 34:45run game. You got to run through what he
- 34:47does in the run game. Well, and you already talked
- 34:49about Tray, Shawn, Ward, really we, when we looked at the, the
- 34:52stats there, you kind of got 3 backs that that have got some
- 34:56pretty good burn with Robichaud in there.
- 34:58And and, and Richard, you know, which guys are working in the
- 35:03most in the run game and how does Tommy kind of work in there
- 35:06as well? So Tommy really he's more of
- 35:10like an improviser, which it's it's been a little, I don't want
- 35:16to say concerning, but so he missed the Western Kentucky game
- 35:19with an apparent leg injury. So not really sure if he's just
- 35:22been like a little hesitant over the last week to really kind of
- 35:26be creative on the ground or kind of what's going on there.
- 35:30But Robin Shaw is more of like a bowling ball.
- 35:32And you know, I know you guys were talking about Bayshaw
- 35:35earlier and you know, it's, it's, it's tough for me to to
- 35:38hear that, especially with how well he's doing because, you
- 35:41know, obviously we know he was originally committed to us,
- 35:45commits to you guys. We end up with Kai Robashaw
- 35:48instead, which was a fine consolation prize, But he's he's
- 35:52not Bayshaw, you know, but I would say Kai Robashaw, he's
- 35:57definitely more of like a bowling ball in between the
- 36:00tackles type of guy. He's a hard runner.
- 36:04Tray, Sean Ward, he's does have hands out of the backfield,
- 36:07which is really worked well within kind of the passing game
- 36:11and really helping them move the ball when they get a little
- 36:13stagnant. And Richard, Turbo Richard, he's
- 36:17Turbo Richard for a reason. He's very fast and he's a true
- 36:20freshman. Was not expected to really get
- 36:24much of any playing time this year.
- 36:26Really kind of started, you know, getting carries at least
- 36:30like at an extended clip. And the red bandana game against
- 36:34Michigan State had a touchdown there and he was really the only
- 36:38one who was effective on the ground against Virginia two
- 36:42weeks ago now. So that yeah, I mean, The thing
- 36:46is they do have 3 running backs. I would say all three of their
- 36:49skill sets are different. It's all just kind of depends on
- 36:54like who's got the hot hands on a week to week basis.
- 36:58You know, it's kind of been different on a, you know, from,
- 37:01from game to game. But you know, I think Turbo
- 37:03Richard is, is a name that has been popping up a lot.
- 37:07I mean, he was in the practice notes this week, had a real good
- 37:10week of practice. So I would look for him to kind
- 37:13of, you know, really, really look to elevate the run game
- 37:17this week for us. Hey, yeah, real quick question,
- 37:21Brett, I'm, I'm from down here in Alabama, born and raised here
- 37:26and, you know, follow Bill O Brown a lot.
- 37:29And yeah, I'll just say down here, Alabama fans killed that
- 37:35man. I'm talking about.
- 37:37I, I actually thought Bill Lebron's a pretty good offensive
- 37:40coordinator, pretty good coach. So just asking your opinion with
- 37:43him being you guys as head coach.
- 37:45And then I heard you say earlier kind of he would be or you guys
- 37:49will be OK with him dipping his hand kind of in the offense.
- 37:51How do y'all feel about him in his coaching style so far?
- 37:56I think it's, it's, it's been a thrill specifically with our
- 38:01last two coaches who, you know, we had Steve Adagio for seven
- 38:07years and they called him 7 when Steve, Steve for a reason.
- 38:10He was a very average mediocre coach.
- 38:12Really didn't ever bring them over the top.
- 38:16You know, I go back to like 2018 when we were seven and two had
- 38:20college game day and then lost the last three games of the
- 38:23season. That was kind of him in a
- 38:25nutshell. And then with with Halfley last
- 38:27year or the past four years, it's, you know, been a lot of
- 38:30positive talk and a lot of, you know, we're going to love our
- 38:33guys. We're going to do this the right
- 38:34way. It just never showed up on the
- 38:38field. You know, a lot of mistakes, a
- 38:40lot of mental mistakes in the the game.
- 38:42The game play itself wasn't very fun to watch.
- 38:45So I think coming into this year with Bill O'Brien, there has
- 38:48been a lot of excitement specifically because he is a
- 38:51local guy. You know, he's, he's from
- 38:52Massachusetts, obviously had a great career as an OC for the
- 38:57Patriots. And I think the thing with Bill
- 39:00O'Brien too is like, I think he gets it.
- 39:01I think he gets the BC situation.
- 39:05It's not, you know, you're, it's, it's not just your run of
- 39:08run-of-the-mill FBS, that type of program.
- 39:11There are like a lot of various things that kind of go into it
- 39:15specifically, you know, it's in a pro town.
- 39:17So there really aren't a lot of eyes and exposure on it to begin
- 39:20with. The academics are so high.
- 39:23And being in an area like New England, it's not necessarily
- 39:26like a hotbed for, you know, football talent.
- 39:30And I think he gets all that and is really kind of you using his
- 39:34ability to kind of understand the Boston College landscape to
- 39:37his, you know, to his benefit and really kind of get people to
- 39:41rally behind it. And, you know, I know the the
- 39:43fan base has been has been juiced about it thus far.
- 39:47And, you know, if you told us that we were going to be 4 and
- 39:51two, you know, even though, you know, the last last week or two
- 39:54weeks ago, excuse me, hurt, but if you told us we'd be foreign
- 39:57too, I think we'd be, you know, pretty happy about that.
- 40:00So yeah, so I think everyone's satisfied.
- 40:03Another question to ask just about that, to kind of build off
- 40:06of that, when you talked about, you know, Boston College being
- 40:11a, you know, kind of a different situation for a college town, a
- 40:14college program. A couple of things I know about
- 40:17Boston College. I don't follow Boston College
- 40:19I'm sure as much as you do, but they always have some crazy last
- 40:23names like Castellanos. I know that.
- 40:27And they always have a tight end wearing a cowboy collar and
- 40:31getting a lot of yards on Virginia Tech.
- 40:34So do y'all have a tight end this year that we need to be
- 40:38worried about? He's usually white.
- 40:41He's usually like 6-7. He's usually big and he's
- 40:45usually crazy. Last name, cowboy collar dude.
- 40:49We got to worry about that. You don't have to worry about,
- 40:52you don't have to worry about a white tight end.
- 40:55We have a guy named Tamari Morales is like a mouthful to
- 41:00get that out transfer from I want to he was at UNC last year
- 41:06and he had they have been working him into the offense on
- 41:10a week to week basis a lot more. And then we also got a guy
- 41:14Jeremiah Franklin, both guys are they're they're not high volume
- 41:19guys. I wouldn't expect them to kill
- 41:22you in the red zone. Morales is, you know, really who
- 41:25comes to play and no horse call us to speak of, you know, so I
- 41:31don't think you have to. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:35I think I when I when he, when he said that the first guy, I
- 41:37thought it was Sean Ryan when he literally leaked over a Syracuse
- 41:41player back in like 2003 or something with the horse collar.
- 41:45So yeah, but no. Well, let's flip to this.
- 41:49We're going to stay on the offense for a couple more
- 41:51questions here and I and I want to talk about looking through
- 41:54the data, statistics logs, watching some of your game.
- 41:58Lewis Bond jumps out. He's doubled up on receptions
- 42:01from he's the leading receiver. He's doubled up on yards, couple
- 42:05touchdowns. What does he bring to the table
- 42:08and where does he line up? What do you like about him as
- 42:12from ABC perspective? I think biggest thing about him
- 42:17is just his overall confidence. I remember last year in the
- 42:20press conference, he talked about how there's no one in the
- 42:24country that could bring him down one-on-one in open field,
- 42:27which, you know, it's happened. So obviously people can, but I
- 42:31just love his demeanor and his just confidence and bullish
- 42:35attitude. The thing with him too is he
- 42:38understands route running like I think few people actually do.
- 42:42Like he actually uses his shoulders in order to kind of
- 42:46get get a cornerback to kind of shift and then he moves.
- 42:50So it's like little things like that that he does.
- 42:53He really is just like a dog on all three levels.
- 42:56Like he's he's good in the short game.
- 42:59He's good across the middle. He's good deep.
- 43:01Like he just he's he just has these shorthands.
- 43:05And I think the thing with him, it's not that he's a burner and
- 43:08he's like super fast, but his after the catch ability to get
- 43:13separation on the secondary is remarkable.
- 43:17You know, he did it with a game-winning touchdown against
- 43:20Michigan State a couple weeks ago.
- 43:22And he does it time to time again.
- 43:23But yeah, it's just he, he is a he's, he's got, he's got a
- 43:27finesse to him, but he also has just like a sheer toughness.
- 43:30Like, he's not afraid to go up and get the ball or go across
- 43:34the middle and get it. And you know, he's been doing it
- 43:36for two years now. And you know, he's an, and it's
- 43:39it's Tommy's. It's him and Castellanos.
- 43:41They're roommates, so they, they have a, you know, a rapport like
- 43:45any other. So, you know, he, if anyone's
- 43:47going to, you know, get you guys on Thursday, it's absolutely
- 43:51without a doubt going to be him. Yeah.
- 43:55And you know, when we look at a a A-Team like Boston College,
- 43:59you know, Virginia Tech historically, you know, we're,
- 44:02we're one of the the teams that's going to argue with you
- 44:04about DBU. You can make the case that
- 44:08Boston College could be, could make an argument for offensive
- 44:11line. You talk a little bit about the
- 44:14offensive line, what they do well, and maybe you know some
- 44:18things they don't do so well. I think the offensive line is
- 44:22one of the more sound groups in or on for, you know, especially
- 44:29like position wise. It all starts right up the front
- 44:32through Kendall. He's been, I believe he got
- 44:36snubbed for AC any sort of ACC accolades last year.
- 44:40I would say he's one of the better, if not a top three
- 44:43center in ACC along with Jude Boundary, who's our left tackle.
- 44:49There's just they they have, they have size and mobility,
- 44:54which is something that they had lacked the past couple years.
- 44:58But I've really kind of got back to I think especially like in
- 45:01their recruiting. But yeah, it's, it's, it's
- 45:05something that they're running game.
- 45:08They're as as the running game. The offensive line as a cohesive
- 45:13unit has been phenomenal. I think their past, the past
- 45:17game has been a little bit a suspect, which has led to, you
- 45:21know, Tommy having to really kind of rush around in the
- 45:25pocket and rush outside the pocket.
- 45:27And it caused, you know, quite a few turnovers and inopportune
- 45:30moments. So I think if Virginia Tech is
- 45:33really going to find, find a way to, you know, kind of expose the
- 45:39BC offensive line, it's going to be, you know, as as when we're
- 45:44passing the ball as opposed to running the ball.
- 45:46Because I would say, you know, in the trenches, BC has been
- 45:50phenomenal about being able to get positive net games from a
- 45:56rushing attack, you know, this year.
- 45:58And it's it's something that, you know, if, if they can come
- 46:01together, you know, in the passing game, then it'll it's
- 46:05it's a strong group. But I would say that's like
- 46:07they're one kind of, I don't want to even say weakness, but
- 46:10you know, there is some some room for you guys to kind of get
- 46:13through on them. Are you kind of looking at early
- 46:16down success being kind of a big key for that BC offense?
- 46:20And stuff, Yeah, yeah. Because especially like you look
- 46:23at you look at the weather, whether it was the Florida State
- 46:26game, the first half of the Missouri game, the Michigan
- 46:32State game and the first half of the UVA game, a lot of long
- 46:36drives, a lot of long drives. You know, we are really, you
- 46:39know, not only controlling, controlling the ball, keeping
- 46:42our defense, you know, off the field, you know, but running the
- 46:46ball successfully. That's where BC has been most
- 46:49successful. And that's something that, you
- 46:53know, and you see it when they kind of get away from that and
- 46:55they start passing the ball on, on early downs, get the
- 46:59incompletions, get the three and outs, things like that.
- 47:02But yeah, I mean, if you, if you look at a lot of their, a lot of
- 47:06their touchdown drives in the first half, it's a lot of
- 47:088/10/12 play drives, you know, and I, I think that even the
- 47:13opening drive of the UVA game was like 9 or 10 plays in
- 47:17itself. So that's that's kind of been
- 47:20where they found the most success is controlling the ball,
- 47:22controlling the clock, you know, eating up time and, you know,
- 47:26kind of methodically moving the ball down the field,
- 47:28specifically through the ground too.
- 47:31All right, duly noted on those. And with that, we'll close up
- 47:35the offensive segment and we're going to flip over to defense.
- 47:38And our man Shelton has a couple questions and a couple things he
- 47:41wants to talk to you about. Brett on the D line.
- 47:44Yeah. So, Brett, it looks to me like
- 47:47you guys have done a pretty good job of limiting the run game.
- 47:50I think you're 27th in yards per rush allowed and 15th in the
- 47:54country in success rate allowed on defense in terms of stopping
- 47:58the run. Talk about the front 7 and and
- 48:00what why you think they've done a good job of preventing the big
- 48:03runs. I mean, so it really starts
- 48:06right in the middle. Cam Horsley and George Brooks as
- 48:09our defensive tackles have just been absolutely phenomenal.
- 48:15George Brooks was a transfer from Michigan last year and he
- 48:19had his moments, but you know, it was really taking it like to
- 48:24another level this year and being able to kind of stuff up
- 48:26the middle, you know, and it and it all comes back to the
- 48:30linchpin of the entire defense, Donovan Azaraku.
- 48:35He was great in 22 was almost non existent last year.
- 48:40I think he had three sacks all season and I believe all three
- 48:44of them came in one game. So really struggled last year
- 48:48and I think he, I mean, he, if he doesn't lead the country in
- 48:52Sachs, he did at one point and he has just been absolutely
- 48:56phenomenal for us. So it's just, you know, it's,
- 49:01it's it all comes down to it all comes down to really the
- 49:05defensive line play in general and just really how they've been
- 49:10able to kind of grow this year because I we're still really
- 49:14only rushing 4. You know, you really won't see
- 49:18us blitz much from like the linebacker position.
- 49:23But that kind of comes back to Tim Lewis's philosophy is of
- 49:26kind of bend, don't break. We have one of the best red zone
- 49:31defenses in the country this year because we're really not
- 49:34giving up a lot of touchdowns, a lot of field goals.
- 49:37And that's kind of been the philosophy of, you know, really
- 49:40relying on the secondary, you know, to make the plays,
- 49:43especially when we're in the red zone.
- 49:45But you. Know you you were right Brett 5
- 49:49allow touchdowns in the red zone this year yeah on 18 trips
- 49:52that's pretty that's pretty damn impressive in my.
- 49:54Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, a lot of I.
- 49:57Was gonna, yeah, I was going to ask about that because I, I
- 50:01would just look it up. So for for those curious, Boston
- 50:03College ranks 6 in the country and fewest points per possession
- 50:07allowed in the red zone, even though they they've given up a
- 50:10fair share of their red zone drives.
- 50:11It's just when they get inside of 20, you are not going to
- 50:13score against them. So, Ben, but don't break like
- 50:15you said. Great to hear one I was going to
- 50:20say. Go ahead.
- 50:22I'm sorry. I was going to ask more about
- 50:24Donovan. I mean, you know, because he is
- 50:27second in the country. At one point he was leading.
- 50:30He is second in the country. OK, second.
- 50:32Yeah, second APR fist. So anyway, Thursday night there
- 50:36are two guys who are absolutely tearing it up from the in
- 50:39position in this game. If you watch, if you're out
- 50:42there and you're not ABC fan, you're not a tech fan, watch
- 50:45this game for both defensive ends because these guys probably
- 50:48will be playing on Sundays in the next few years some sort of
- 50:51way. But what I want to ask about
- 50:53Donovan, is there any weakness to his game?
- 50:56Obviously that tells you there's a motor there, there's probably
- 51:00some bend. He's probably got some sort of
- 51:01what what are his moves you're going to see from him?
- 51:06He's extremely fast, a little bit undersized.
- 51:10So especially when he goes up against kind of like shiftier
- 51:15type of lineman, you can neutralize him a bit, but but
- 51:20the way he is able to kind of use his undersize against like
- 51:24big D tackles is his is his speed coming off the edge really
- 51:29just kind of like ripping through people.
- 51:33But yeah, I mean, there it's it's been amazing to watch.
- 51:37There really hasn't been much of like a weakness at least like
- 51:40you haven't seen it this year yet, unfortunately, you know,
- 51:44and hopefully that trend for us continues on Thursday because he
- 51:48has just been an absolute force. You know, even clutch play after
- 51:52clutch play, even against Washington, KY in the game that
- 51:54we squeaked out, had the amazing forced fumble in order to get us
- 51:58the ball back to score the touchdown to to beat them.
- 52:01So it's just it, it really all all starts with him and that's
- 52:07where our success comes from. And he's just he's, he's very
- 52:10fast. Like you watch you watch him
- 52:12from a defensive end position and you notice the speed.
- 52:17Can you please tell him not to embarrass #70 on our day?
- 52:25Hey, we had, we had to say it. We had to say it, I mean.
- 52:28I'll throw a damn and. That's.
- 52:29Right. That's right.
- 52:30Yeah, yeah, yeah. Put in a good word for US.
- 52:32Line up on the other side. 60. 565 is your man.
- 52:39Yeah, and. And looking at that, I mean, you
- 52:41know, it looks like at least from a offensive line versus
- 52:45defensive line perspective in the passing game, it's kind of
- 52:48strong on weak, strong on weak. You know, we got some both
- 52:52defensive lines that can really get after the passer and some
- 52:56offensive lines at least from a passport perspective with some
- 52:58question marks. So I think that's probably going
- 53:01to be one of the things we want to watch heading into Thursday.
- 53:04One thing that concerns me, especially from like a defensive
- 53:07standpoint, is our top cornerback Amari Jackson's out
- 53:12for the season. I believe he tore his ACL.
- 53:14So, you know, that's that's a tough hit for us.
- 53:17And he's been so, so locked down all freaking season for us.
- 53:22So, you know, we'll see. And you know, hopefully you guys
- 53:25don't expose the replacement too badly.
- 53:29Yeah. And we were going to talk about
- 53:31that next. So I'm glad you brought it up.
- 53:33Yeah. That that I think word just came
- 53:35in today that that is. Going to be season I.
- 53:37Think so. That's that, that that's tough
- 53:41for you guys and you know, obviously with, you know,
- 53:46offensive, offensive line, especially in pass for being a
- 53:48little bit of our weakness, having a maybe some of those
- 53:52routes coming open a little bit quicker might might help with
- 53:54that front. So I think that's going to be
- 53:57something that we got to watch heading to Thursday.
- 53:59But I don't want to take any way thing away from the rest of your
- 54:01secondary because you guys, even without, even without him there,
- 54:08you guys still have forced 9 interceptions this season in six
- 54:12games. Even without Amari Jackson
- 54:13there, Who else kind of pops to you on the secondary?
- 54:17Obviously you mentioned Amari's our lockdown guy, but you don't
- 54:21get 10 interceptions by having one guy and then the rest are
- 54:25scrubs. So there's got to be at least
- 54:26one more guy you like in that secondary.
- 54:28Yeah, Kate, KP Price and Max Tucker, who are both safeties
- 54:34for us, have just been phenomenal.
- 54:37I believe Max Tucker was the one who had the game ceiling
- 54:39interception in the red bandana game.
- 54:42So they the, the thing that I do like about them too, is they
- 54:47really do pick their spots when they go for the interception.
- 54:50So it's not like they're just ball Hawks who are, you know,
- 54:52prone to get burned either. They have, they have been able
- 54:56to play, you know, very sound, sound coverage and, you know,
- 55:01just somehow the ball's been finding them.
- 55:03Carrie Johnson, he's probably the most famous for probably the
- 55:07most egregious targeting play of all time.
- 55:09When he hit the guy against Pit last year.
- 55:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was a great meme for a little
- 55:16bit. It's probably the highlight of
- 55:19of our season, honestly. And then everything he had, he
- 55:23had a pretty, pretty shaky one couple weeks ago.
- 55:26So he he can be prone to kind of the bonehead plays, you know,
- 55:31we'll see if if he can stay out of trouble.
- 55:34But you know, in terms of in terms of our safety position, KP
- 55:38Price and Max Tucker have been absolutely nails and lights out.
- 55:41So those are those are two guys I would keep an eye on on
- 55:44Thursday as well and especially in the secondary with, you know,
- 55:48Amara Jackson out. Very nice.
- 55:53Sheldon, You said you had one more thing you needed to ask
- 55:56Brett tonight. Yeah.
- 55:57So this is kind of out of curiosity, You mentioned the
- 56:00local New England high school recruiting base.
- 56:02Obviously, BC has kind of fallen some hard times.
- 56:04And you know, if you look at programs across the country, one
- 56:07of the biggest predictors of success is proximity to talent.
- 56:11We know that New England's not exactly a hotbed of recruiting,
- 56:13but you know, Pennsylvania is the state that's produced some
- 56:15good players. You know, New Jersey's produced
- 56:17a handful of good players. For you, what is B CS recruiting
- 56:21strategy in terms of geography? Like how do, how do you see them
- 56:24kind of attacking recruiting and, and maybe how does Bill
- 56:26O'Brien kind of, I guess, go about rebuilding this program,
- 56:30you know, kind of from where it was a few years ago?
- 56:32Yeah. I mean, he, I think he's putting
- 56:34more of an emphasis on looking to get local recruits,
- 56:39especially, you know, the top, the top four or five from
- 56:43Massachusetts or Connecticut. Like you said, New Jersey, NJ is
- 56:47a big one. I think with Shiano, with Greg
- 56:50Schiano coming back to Rutgers, it has created a little bit more
- 56:54of an issue because that was a pretty good pipeline for us, you
- 56:58know, for a while prior to that. But yeah, he has kind of talked
- 57:02about, you know, keeping the local guys home, you know, and
- 57:05obviously it's not an abundance as, you know, maybe, you know,
- 57:11schools down South might be able to see.
- 57:13But, you know, really focusing on that.
- 57:16And, you know, kind of like you said, whether it's PA or New
- 57:19Jersey or, you know, they they have found a bit of success, you
- 57:24know, kind of in the Florida area.
- 57:26Obviously that's where they flowers came from.
- 57:28So never, never, never going to complain about that.
- 57:32But yeah, I think for the most part, like you said, kind of the
- 57:35proximity to home and, you know, the regional and, you know,
- 57:38really keeping the kids, keeping the kids home that, you know,
- 57:42our our prize picks for you and I, I believe, I believe they
- 57:45locked up already the top three kids from Massachusetts for next
- 57:50year. So, you know, it's definitely,
- 57:52definitely helping and you know, obviously with the with the
- 57:55transfer portal and you know, kind of all that stuff, I
- 57:58wouldn't be surprised if they really start to utilize that
- 58:01next year. Bill O'Brien hasn't there's
- 58:04there's not a player on this roster right now that Bill Bill
- 58:07O'Brien brought in himself, you know, because, you know, halfway
- 58:10left so late after, you know, the transfer portal and all the
- 58:15recruiting. So he none of these none of
- 58:17these guys are his. So I think next year it's going
- 58:20to be very interesting to see, you know, what kind of players
- 58:24that he does look to bring in this type of personnel he's
- 58:26going to look to, you know, set out for.
- 58:28So, you know, I think next you're seeing him use kind of
- 58:32Jeff Haffley's toys this year. Next year you're going to really
- 58:35start to see more of his imprint, you know, as to like
- 58:38what his vision for Boston College football is going to be.
- 58:42Yeah, and and you really know that he has at least a good idea
- 58:44of the lay of the land in Pennsylvania, so he does.
- 58:46Know yeah that's how that. Looks like so.
- 58:49Absolutely. I didn't even think about that.
- 58:51Absolutely. Yeah.
- 58:52So that that's something that to keep an eye on heading into
- 58:55probably next cycle, especially when you look at, you know, JUCO
- 58:59pickups and transfer portal. So keep an eye on that, Brett,
- 59:04we appreciate you jumping on. We're going to let you go.
- 59:06But before we do, tell us what, Tell the folks out there where
- 59:09they can find you and anything else you want to get off your
- 59:12chest here. Yeah, well, first of all, I
- 59:16appreciate you guys having me on.
- 59:19You know, I, I, I do always look forward to the Virginia Tech
- 59:21game every year. I think, you know, it is it is
- 59:24kind of nice to go back to the Big East roots and you know,
- 59:28it's definitely from our perspective, a lot of respect
- 59:30for you guys and it's a lot of fun being able to you know, kind
- 59:34of have like a yearly, yearly game with you.
- 59:36And so I appreciate you guys having us on.
- 59:38It was a lot of fun. You could find, you can find us
- 59:42at Eagles Weekly BC on Twitter, Instagram, you know, wherever
- 59:47else, and then our our overall website, Eagles Daily BC.
- 59:51So Eagles Weekly for the podcast and Eagles Daily is the website
- 59:55and that's it. Thanks guys.
- 59:57Awesome. Appreciate it.
- 59:58Brett, you have? A good one, thanks.
- 1:00:01Brett. All right, that was a lot of
- 1:00:04fun. Brett Lane, a lot of knowledge
- 1:00:06on us about the BC team. It's always good to have other
- 1:00:12podcasts here because it's also great to know it's like 4 guys
- 1:00:16who are BC fans who are doing the same things we're doing,
- 1:00:19running a website, doing a podcast.
- 1:00:22It's always, it's always good to make that connection.
- 1:00:25Now I hope we beat shit out of them Thursday night.
- 1:00:27As nice as Brett was, so. Hey, we got we got to keep it
- 1:00:32friendly, but it's still a rivalry.
- 1:00:34It's still a rivalry, you still talk trash, so let's get to it.
- 1:00:37We have talked about BC y'all have heard some names, some
- 1:00:39information. Let's now get to the hokey keys
- 1:00:43and we're going to start with Jonathan tally.
- 1:00:45Tally what is going to be the key to victory on?
- 1:00:47Thursday night, key to victory on Thursday night is going to be
- 1:00:52stop the opposing teams, quarterbacks, leagues.
- 1:00:57You cannot let Castellanos kill us scrambling around in the
- 1:01:04pocket and scrambling for big plays.
- 1:01:07So that is definitely going to be the key for us to for me and
- 1:01:11what I think of US winning the game.
- 1:01:15All righty till we get Castellanos legs.
- 1:01:17Castellanos if y'all don't recall 1000 yard rusher last
- 1:01:20year. Not as much this year, but
- 1:01:22obviously banged up with an ankle injury.
- 1:01:24So just because those stats don't look great this year, it's
- 1:01:28in that boy, it's in Tommy Castellano.
- 1:01:30I like him calling Tommy, by the way.
- 1:01:32I just just love him saying that.
- 1:01:35Sheldon Moss key to Thursday night.
- 1:01:39Rekindle that Thursday night magic.
- 1:01:41So I'm going to I'm going to recite some statue guys here.
- 1:01:43If you guys are ready, let's go. So since 1992, I think that was
- 1:01:49when Thursday Night Football first started as regular
- 1:01:51program. I could be wrong but I believe
- 1:01:53that is the case. Virgin Tech all time 24 wins on
- 1:01:57Thursday Night Football in the regular season.
- 1:01:59That is tied for the most of the time with Utah.
- 1:02:01Now Utah has played a few cream puffs.
- 1:02:03Virgin Tech has traditionally played some pretty solid
- 1:02:06opponents on Thursday night. So if you just look at FCSFBS
- 1:02:09teams, the Hokies have nineteen wins against on Thursday night,
- 1:02:14which is most all time. They've also played 36 games.
- 1:02:17Second link to Georgia Tech and win percentage wise, they're
- 1:02:21ranked 7th among teams with at least 20 games played on
- 1:02:24Thursday night. Obviously, this was a staple of
- 1:02:26the program back in the Beamer days.
- 1:02:28He used it for recruiting to enhance the visibility of the
- 1:02:30program and he was in his bag back in the day at 11 straight
- 1:02:34Thursday night games from 1998 to 2005, although they are just
- 1:02:38one and three in the last four. So trying to turn around a
- 1:02:41little bit. They did beat Circus last year,
- 1:02:43first Thursday night wins since 2016.
- 1:02:45So it's been a staple of the program for decades.
- 1:02:47I think Tech, you know, it needs to kind of reclaim it as their
- 1:02:53own. Obviously with the NFL playing
- 1:02:54on Thursday nights, it's kind of lost some magic that had back in
- 1:02:57the old days. But I still think this is a big
- 1:02:58opportunity for Tech to kind of showcase themselves on the
- 1:03:00national stage and say, hey, this is our night, so go get
- 1:03:04that win. Yep, to that point, Syracuse
- 1:03:07game last year with an opposing NFL game, it went like 1.6
- 1:03:10million viewers, which that's nothing to sneeze out on a
- 1:03:13Thursday opposing versus the NFL.
- 1:03:15And yeah, I think you're right. Embrace it, bring it back.
- 1:03:20It's still a national spotlight. If I'm sure everybody that is in
- 1:03:24the chat watching live wherever you are there, it's a it's an
- 1:03:28opportunity still for the school.
- 1:03:30Sports Center is going to be live on campus.
- 1:03:32Matt Berry, if y'all haven't seen that, going to be there in
- 1:03:35the middle of campus Thursday, like 2:30.
- 1:03:39So if you're a kid out there got by all means there's your chance
- 1:03:42to get on national TV. Brian Siegel, I'm going to flip
- 1:03:45to you next. Yeah, I'm going to, I'm going
- 1:03:47to, I'm going to piggyback off show in a little bit here.
- 1:03:50You know, Virginia Tech made Thursday Night Football what it
- 1:03:53is, or at least what it was before the NFL kind of stepped
- 1:03:56in there. So it kind of put Thursday Night
- 1:03:59Football on the map and it helped put Virginia Tech on the
- 1:04:01map in in that same token. So to his point, embrace it,
- 1:04:06reclaim it. Love that.
- 1:04:09My key though is going to be get off the field on 3rd down on
- 1:04:12money downs. If it's third down, it's 4th
- 1:04:14down. You're on defense.
- 1:04:15Get the hell off the field when you have a quarterback that can
- 1:04:19do things with their legs. That's that's where Virginia
- 1:04:22Tech has been killed a lot historically and this season
- 1:04:26with the inability to get off the field when they get into
- 1:04:28those good situations where they can do so.
- 1:04:30So that's the going to be the biggest thing for me.
- 1:04:33Don't let those third and 6th, 3rd and 7th turn into first
- 1:04:36down. 100% before I get to mine, I just I just got to am I asking
- 1:04:42you a question tally? Yeah, I've seen it.
- 1:04:45We no Curtis, you we going, we going all get into that.
- 1:04:48You go ahead, you go, you go ahead and give us your key and
- 1:04:51then we'll put that back up all. Right, we'll pull that back up.
- 1:04:54All right, so my key, and it's something Tally's been saying
- 1:04:56the last few weeks, but it's got to be finish, finish, finish.
- 1:05:00Defensively, sack the quarterback BC they are 101st in
- 1:05:06the country and sacks allowed. They're giving up over 2 1/2 a
- 1:05:08game. So clearly there is some issue
- 1:05:10there even with Tommy Castellanos having his little
- 1:05:13way ability. So finish, I want to see over 5
- 1:05:18/ 5 sacks Thursday night. The other one is the offensive
- 1:05:22side of the ball and I'm really glad Brett mentioned it.
- 1:05:24They are one hell of a red zone defense and somebody put in here
- 1:05:27about the way they set up. Brian, I think you mentioned
- 1:05:30something about it earlier this week.
- 1:05:32Just the way they their alignments and stuff, once you
- 1:05:34get inside the 20, they play very basically they'll give you
- 1:05:393 all night. They don't really care.
- 1:05:41But finish we finished, it's been 18 drives in the red zone.
- 1:05:45We finished with 13, which is not half bad.
- 1:05:47So Thursday night you get in the red zone to get a touchdown
- 1:05:50because I think that is for one reason and one reason only.
- 1:05:54I think that would break BC mentally if the first two drives
- 1:05:57you got inside the 20 and punched it in, I think this
- 1:06:00would be gone from that defense because that aura of
- 1:06:02invincibility inside the red zone, it's now gone and they can
- 1:06:05score on us, man, this isn't good.
- 1:06:07We're not a high flying shootout team.
- 1:06:09We can't do this. So finish, finish, finish.
- 1:06:13So before we go to the predictions now, I'll pull it up
- 1:06:16for you, Tal. Yeah, Josh and Josh went and
- 1:06:19corrected my name too. I don't know why everybody
- 1:06:21leaves the the E out of my name on talent.
- 1:06:25He was. Yeah, Josh went and corrected
- 1:06:27it. So cool.
- 1:06:29But yes, we did not talk about this, but that's something we I
- 1:06:33was going to bring up. So I did see the orange cleats.
- 1:06:37I'm just happy to have some style, have a little bit of
- 1:06:40drip. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:06:41Like I hate and pride's kind of a traditional coach, but I'm not
- 1:06:47just, you know, all you got to have black and white cleats.
- 1:06:49So you just got to have this jersey and it's just it's like,
- 1:06:52I don't feel like Virginia Tech is that kind of school.
- 1:06:57I think it's OK for us to have some pizzazz and have some
- 1:06:59different alternate stuff, you know, maybe some alternate
- 1:07:03orange uniforms, you know, I don't know.
- 1:07:07We're hearing some rumors about some stuff going on on Thursday,
- 1:07:11so I would be interested to see what they come out with.
- 1:07:15If you watch the presses, I think Kyron was talking about, I
- 1:07:20think he said something to the fact that I'm, you know, I'm
- 1:07:22going to be interested to see what we what our uniforms look
- 1:07:25like. So that has some people raising
- 1:07:27their eyebrows, but I like the, I like the orange and white
- 1:07:31cleats that they're practicing in and we'll play in.
- 1:07:34So I like to see what the rest of the uniform looks like.
- 1:07:37Kind of with that I have my orange on ready to go but on
- 1:07:42another note too I'll let you know Curtis and Brian and
- 1:07:45Shelton talk about how they feel about that and if we go orange.
- 1:07:48But I want to give a shout out to SWVA again, hook me up with a
- 1:07:53this is a shirt from them that I ordered and they also sent me a
- 1:07:57hat. Now this is kind of a big deal.
- 1:07:59I don't know hold on. Let me cut my light off so y'all
- 1:08:01can see that this is kind of a big deal hat here because I
- 1:08:06think this is kind of a prototype just for me.
- 1:08:09Just to let y'all know. I don't think this is out yet.
- 1:08:12So I'm kind of rocking some exclusive stuff.
- 1:08:15Shout out to my Got. A little one-on-one right now.
- 1:08:17One-on-one right now man. So again, y'all got to go in and
- 1:08:22shop with those guys. They took really good care of
- 1:08:25me, sent me some cool, some cool stickers and things like that.
- 1:08:30So process was really good. Got my shipment really quick.
- 1:08:35So awesome, awesome experience with them.
- 1:08:38Y'all please go and shop with them now.
- 1:08:40I guess I'll go to my boy Shelton on this.
- 1:08:44What are you thinking about orange uniforms?
- 1:08:46If we have a more, you know, incorporating some orange for
- 1:08:49the orange out. Anything that makes us look cool
- 1:08:52on social media and help us in recruiting I am a big advocate
- 1:08:56of. What it looks like just we.
- 1:09:00Need to have swag. We need to have swag got.
- 1:09:03To have swag we got we going to go to we going to go to Brian
- 1:09:05Nexus and save Curtis for the for the end because he's got
- 1:09:09orange on. So Brian, what you think?
- 1:09:10You know when I I've heard some fun stuff.
- 1:09:12I've heard orange jerseys, I've heard white helmets with the
- 1:09:15script. I've heard every rumor about
- 1:09:17this week as far as uniforms are concerned that you could
- 1:09:20possibly have. And I'm here for all of it
- 1:09:22because I like having some alternates out there.
- 1:09:26I like being able to mix and match a little bit.
- 1:09:29I like that you have to have like a very good compliment, a
- 1:09:33very drip worthy compliment to your more traditional 99
- 1:09:40throwbacks that are our primary jersey now that we've kind of
- 1:09:44brought a little bit into the twenty 20s.
- 1:09:46So I think that would be a good contrast.
- 1:09:50Curtis. I mean not.
- 1:09:51I love the orange look and I mean the way the new uniforms
- 1:09:55look. I will be interested if they go
- 1:09:58to the orange look, the orange alternate.
- 1:10:01What color is the number going to be?
- 1:10:02Is it maroon or is it white? And I think either would pop.
- 1:10:06I think either a maroon number on the side would pop.
- 1:10:09I think a white number would pop.
- 1:10:11But they need to do it for no other reason.
- 1:10:13There's a bunch of people like Tally out there that if they
- 1:10:15drop that Thursday night and on Friday morning said, oh, you
- 1:10:18like the orange jerseys now. Now they're officially sail for
- 1:10:21Fanatics. Yeah, let's give.
- 1:10:24Up Charlie would get 3 or 4 real quick, but it is it's it's an
- 1:10:27orange effect game. The uniform needs to be orange.
- 1:10:30If you're going to do an orange effect, you'll need to be in
- 1:10:33white. You don't need to be in a room,
- 1:10:35You don't need to be in mix. It needs to be orange, orange,
- 1:10:37orange. I tell people all the time,
- 1:10:40whenever we get into it, over this uniforms and all, we need
- 1:10:45to be more, I said. Orange is one of our colors,
- 1:10:48like 1. Of our colors.
- 1:10:49Like when I'm not asking us to wear black or grey or smoky
- 1:10:53uniforms, like orange is one of our colors.
- 1:10:56So if we're going to have a orange effect, we should have an
- 1:11:00orange uniform. It's my opinion.
- 1:11:02Somebody, yeah, definitely, definitely somebody in the chat
- 1:11:06asked about the hat, said where can I cop the hat?
- 1:11:09Jason, if you, I see you in the chat as well, Drop y'all's.
- 1:11:14Drop y'all's website on there in the chat if you can man, just so
- 1:11:19some people can know where to find you and and grab some stuff
- 1:11:22from SWVA. Again, SWVA is the guys who
- 1:11:26hooked me up with the hat, so y'all check them out. 100% and
- 1:11:31now that they've hooked you up with the hats, you got to hook
- 1:11:33me up with a prediction tally. What's going to go happen
- 1:11:35Thursday night? Why I got to be first man then?
- 1:11:38OK, you don't have to be first tonight.
- 1:11:40Now you already go first. You already said it, so now I
- 1:11:42got to go. No, no, no, no.
- 1:11:44You sit there, Brian, go first. OK, now I'm on the spot.
- 1:11:49What's that spread at now 6 1/2? I believe that's where it was.
- 1:11:53It wasn't. Yeah, we're covering that.
- 1:11:55Give me 3120 Hokies. Let's fucking go.
- 1:11:59Shelton, what about you? I'll take Hokies 2720.
- 1:12:03I think it'll be a good game. B CS got good run defense, so
- 1:12:06it's not going to be a blowout, but I do think BT is a better
- 1:12:08team. Cassie, I was going to be a
- 1:12:09little bit a little bit hobbled so, but I think they'll take
- 1:12:12care of business at home all. Right, and I'll go and I'll let
- 1:12:16you close it out then tally Hokies win this when you
- 1:12:20mentioned the BC rush offense, but you start looking about who
- 1:12:23they played. Not exactly pounding the rock
- 1:12:26teams nowhere near the back of Basil Tooton.
- 1:12:30Hokies win 3424 with the intermediate passing game and
- 1:12:34Basil just going right down their throats because eventually
- 1:12:37it's just going to break. Oh, now I guess it's me, Hon
- 1:12:42Curtis. It's.
- 1:12:43You now see, Look, I'll waited till the end.
- 1:12:46So I got a, I'm a, you know, I'm a baseball guy.
- 1:12:51So I'm real superstitious. Like if you're winning in a, in
- 1:12:54a certain pair of socks, you don't wash them, you know what
- 1:12:57I'm saying? You just keep wearing them until
- 1:12:59you lose. So I'm still I've been betting
- 1:13:02against us or not betting against us, but I've been
- 1:13:05predicting against us and as soon as I predict against this,
- 1:13:08we have a great game or we play flawless and win.
- 1:13:13So I'm going to go BC in this. I don't really have a prediction
- 1:13:18yet. Let me guess, it's going to be
- 1:13:19close. So I would say BC 2417, I'm
- 1:13:23going to go somewhere around there.
- 1:13:24So that is only on the strength of every.
- 1:13:29Time. Every time I say that we're not
- 1:13:31going to win or we're not going to cover, we do it.
- 1:13:35So I'll say it like I said two weeks ago and last week, plaster
- 1:13:40my face in the locker room. I'm going against you.
- 1:13:45Hey, Tally's on his Michael Scott.
- 1:13:47He's not superstitious, but he's a little stitious.
- 1:13:49He's. A little stitious.
- 1:13:51There we go. All righty, so there are
- 1:13:53predictions. I got a bunch of y'all putting
- 1:13:55them in here, but don't forget when you put your score
- 1:13:57predictions, put who you think's going to win because it's been a
- 1:14:00couple times even us. We'll even pick against the
- 1:14:03Hokies. So we put that up there and do
- 1:14:06not forget as we move into our big Screener segment, we're
- 1:14:10giving away something YouTube 1999 in the comments to get
- 1:14:15entered to win a piece of the history of Virginia Tech.
- 1:14:18Make sure you're subscribed on there.
- 1:14:20Got to subscribe. Throw that comment 19 99 in
- 1:14:23there. That's going to get you an
- 1:14:24entry. Like I said, we're going to pull
- 1:14:26it on November 5th, the episode we're doing before Clemson.
- 1:14:30So you got three chances here and we're going to keep plugging
- 1:14:33it every week until until it's time.
- 1:14:36So until let's go get in there. I'll, I'll, I'll throw it up one
- 1:14:41more time here. One more time, there it is, a
- 1:14:44piece of the goal post. And the you got got the scores
- 1:14:48on the side. Hey, somebody asked.
- 1:14:51Somebody asked that. Yeah, somebody asked the
- 1:14:53interesting question in the chat.
- 1:14:55All right? You know, they said, they said,
- 1:14:56where's that goal post been for 25 years?
- 1:14:59So, so they did a giveaway shortly after that and they they
- 1:15:05held back part of it to do a 25 year.
- 1:15:08Anniversary run. Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 1:15:11So there there's a bunch out there that were done in the
- 1:15:14first run bunch of years back and then this is kind of the
- 1:15:17second run for the 25th. There you go.
- 1:15:21And again, if you just want to buy one outright, go to our
- 1:15:23website and find the Goalpost pyramid.
- 1:15:25You can just purchase one for 199 and $0.90.
- 1:15:28Yeah. And part of that goes towards
- 1:15:31so, yeah. All right, so let's get two big
- 1:15:35screeners. As y'all saw at the beginning of
- 1:15:36the program, we watch games every week, ones that catch our
- 1:15:39eye. Last week, Shelton good week
- 1:15:44four and two. Shelton making a strong comeback
- 1:15:47after a slow. The middle portion there I went
- 1:15:50500, Miranda went 500. Tally and Brian two and four
- 1:15:54each, both still above 50% for the year.
- 1:15:57The Music Man got one right, but he got.
- 1:16:00The one he played the money right?
- 1:16:02He got the money thick right bro?
- 1:16:04He gets off this matter now so. Y'all, y'all got to give him a
- 1:16:08hard time though, because he he literally takes everything that
- 1:16:11we put in here. He puts a bet out there.
- 1:16:13We got another buddy that that we talk to regularly, Robbie
- 1:16:16Compton, that comes on here a bunch.
- 1:16:18He'll throw ABCP bet out there. So it's always fun kind of
- 1:16:22checking in to see, all right, how, how are they doing?
- 1:16:24How are they doing? Who'd you roll with?
- 1:16:28Did you roll with Jason? Did you roll with me?
- 1:16:30Did you roll with Curtis? Exactly who'd you roll with?
- 1:16:33I don't, I don't think it's Faye Tally anymore.
- 1:16:35I think, I think we're, you know, Tally's, you know, right
- 1:16:37at the 500 level. So he's he's.
- 1:16:39I think it man. He's coasting pretty good.
- 1:16:42Well, everybody's had good weeks on this thing.
- 1:16:44Ain't nobody, ain't nobody putting up a stink like an
- 1:16:46absolute, like stink, stink, stink, stink, stink.
- 1:16:49Everybody. If you've met with us at least
- 1:16:51one week on the right week, we made you some money.
- 1:16:53So you just got to figure out which one of us is right this
- 1:16:56week. That's all you got to do.
- 1:16:58So let's go to it. Brian, you got the first game.
- 1:17:01Where you going? What you got?
- 1:17:04Hey, we are going to Indiana baby.
- 1:17:08Nebraska, Indiana, this one kind of it, it looked a little weird.
- 1:17:15I didn't like the line. I think Nebraska's probably a
- 1:17:17little bit better than they're getting credit for here.
- 1:17:20I think Indiana may be a little over ranked at this point.
- 1:17:23They're getting, you know, they got the seven points there.
- 1:17:27I I, I like Nebraska here. So give me Nebraska.
- 1:17:31Yeah, I'm, I'm kind of with you on this one that that line has
- 1:17:34went down to 6 1/2. We caught it at 7.
- 1:17:37So play as what you will. Nebraska is five and one and ask
- 1:17:43us five wins, one loss, a full 7 point dog to Indiana.
- 1:17:47And if you take a look at Indiana so far this year, they
- 1:17:49are 6 and up. They beat FIU, they beat Western
- 1:17:53Illinois, they beat a God of UCLA team, they beat Charlotte
- 1:17:56and Maryland and Northwestern. That's like there's nothing in
- 1:18:01there that says oh that's a really good win.
- 1:18:06You deserve to be a top 15 in the country.
- 1:18:08Nothing's popping, so Lace 7. If Indiana wins, I don't think
- 1:18:13it's going to be by any more than 7, so I'll take the Huskers
- 1:18:17as well. Shelton.
- 1:18:20Yeah, I'm taking the Huskers. I feel like Indiana's due for a
- 1:18:23giant stinker. I mean, they've had a great
- 1:18:24season, but I just think they're going to lay an egg.
- 1:18:26So I'll take take Nebraska. I called, I called Shelton and
- 1:18:33he told me to pick Nebraska, so that's why I picked the one with
- 1:18:38Nebraska. And you know what?
- 1:18:40It's a clean suite, baby. And I got to put this one in
- 1:18:43there because it's a fun little comment here by Josh.
- 1:18:47Yeah, he does look like he moves like him pregame.
- 1:18:52Like I think that's what he's trying to do.
- 1:18:55Full on emulation. Man, Oh yeah, look, that's what
- 1:18:58he's doing. Oh.
- 1:18:59Lord got the got the haircut, got the bands got got the the
- 1:19:03whole look and pregame ritual. The whole 9 man.
- 1:19:06Right, it's. Funny funny, great value Mahomes
- 1:19:102817. That would be a cover and an
- 1:19:12outright win. All right, I got the next game
- 1:19:15here and I'm looking ahead. I'm looking ahead to the 26th of
- 1:19:20October because after this weekend, that is the next game,
- 1:19:24Notre Dame is traveling down to Georgia Tech, down to Bobby Dodd
- 1:19:28Stadium, right there in downtown Atlanta to play the Yellow
- 1:19:31Jackets of Georgia Tech. And to me, as soon as I saw this
- 1:19:35game and I saw the line home Dog getting 10 plus points.
- 1:19:40I like Notre Dame. I think they're a good team.
- 1:19:43I think people are undervaluing Georgia Tech.
- 1:19:46Do I think Georgia Tech wins this game?
- 1:19:47Probably not. But do I think by it's going to
- 1:19:50be some blowout? Hell no.
- 1:19:52Hell no. This is probably a touchdown at
- 1:19:54best game. Give me Georgia Tech.
- 1:19:57Yep, right there with you, Curtis.
- 1:19:58It's the 10 for me. If you'd have put it at 6 1/2,
- 1:20:04seven and a half, maybe you would have pulled the trigger
- 1:20:0610s too much. Georgia Tech on this one,
- 1:20:12Shelton. Notre Dame has just annihilated
- 1:20:14almost everyone that they've played, I think in Austria right
- 1:20:17now. I think they're gonna keep it
- 1:20:18rolling. I think they went big all.
- 1:20:20Right. He's going flip Cali.
- 1:20:23Yeah, I'm going to follow the boys on this one, Brian and
- 1:20:26Curtis, and say Georgia Tech just because Brett Key, he has
- 1:20:30those guys playing hard at least.
- 1:20:33So I feel like they're going to, you know, come out excited about
- 1:20:36that game and keep it close. Yep, and Miranda's riding with
- 1:20:43Sheldon. And so is Jason.
- 1:20:46We got a split. Family here split.
- 1:20:48Decision there. Family All right, Shelton, where
- 1:20:52are you taking us for your big game this week?
- 1:20:56Yes, well, it would have helped if I, Yep, there we go.
- 1:21:00Louisville, Miami. I think it's a pretty good game.
- 1:21:03Two of the two of the better teams in the ACC as we know guys
- 1:21:07Miami has been playing with. I don't know, how would you, how
- 1:21:11would you describe it? Some angels on their wings.
- 1:21:15So I think, I think Louisville's going to take care of business
- 1:21:18and hand the Canes their first L of the season.
- 1:21:22All right, Sheldon says that Bron.
- 1:21:27You know what, I'm going with the you here.
- 1:21:32It's not necessarily that I think that they are ranked where
- 1:21:36they should be. I just, I've gotten to a point
- 1:21:39now watching some of these Louisville games the last couple
- 1:21:41weeks. I do not trust them even at
- 1:21:44home. So I'm going to, I'm going to go
- 1:21:46with Miami here. Yeah, I'm, I'm with Brian here.
- 1:21:50Even though I'm taking Louisville.
- 1:21:52Give me 4. I think this is going to be a
- 1:21:53nail biter of a game. They just beat UVA by 4 last
- 1:21:58week at home. I think it's a very close, close
- 1:22:01call. I think Louisville covers.
- 1:22:03I think Miami pulls another one out of the hat and maybe the
- 1:22:07rest help them. Yeah, I'm going to go with what
- 1:22:11a hokey sideline. See it, he said.
- 1:22:14Miami and the refs, that's what I'm going to go with.
- 1:22:19There we go there we go lots of fun there and Miranda and Jason
- 1:22:24riding with Brian on this one. Four for the you on that land or
- 1:22:28getting or laying 4 points on the road.
- 1:22:32Tally. As as soon as you made the point
- 1:22:35last week and this game popped up, I didn't give Tally an
- 1:22:39option, y'all. I said this is your game because
- 1:22:42you've already been spot on because of the Tennessee game
- 1:22:45last week. Yeah, man, it is.
- 1:22:49You know, a lot of people talk about the Iron Bowl here because
- 1:22:53it is such a a rivalry game, but I really think Alabama fans in
- 1:22:57Alabama really hates Tennessee more than Auburn.
- 1:23:01I don't know if everybody remembers, but Alabama was on
- 1:23:04probation for a while. I think it was Phillip Farmer
- 1:23:07that was at Tennessee, was the one who snitched on Alabama and
- 1:23:11got them in trouble. So they hate, hate, hate
- 1:23:15Tennessee, and that's always a big game.
- 1:23:19So Alabama has kind of been, you know, treading water lately.
- 1:23:24You know, they did go down to Vanderbilt and take the L and,
- 1:23:28you know, last week at home, struggled with South Carolina,
- 1:23:32barely pulled that out. And now they're going to head to
- 1:23:34Tennessee. So I think Tennessee is going to
- 1:23:36be ready. Like, Alabama has a big target
- 1:23:38on them because it's kind of like the shark Smith blood in
- 1:23:43the water. You know, they've been waiting
- 1:23:46for Alabama to kind of show a weakness.
- 1:23:48And I think Tennessee's going to take advantage of it and and
- 1:23:52take this game this week. All right, Kali says.
- 1:23:55Tennessee, take the excuse me? Yeah, take the points.
- 1:23:59Yeah, yeah, Tennessee's going to win this one outright, in my
- 1:24:01opinion. Both teams had a little bit of a
- 1:24:06scare last week against what you would say.
- 1:24:08We're definitely inferior opponents from a talent
- 1:24:11standpoint. Both of them, as Tally
- 1:24:13predicted, looking kind of past their games last week to this
- 1:24:18week. But I think Tennessee just has
- 1:24:21more weapons overall, and I think they're going to end up
- 1:24:24prevailing in the end there. More 40 O league corso.
- 1:24:28Not so fast my friends, not so fast. 3rd Saturday in October.
- 1:24:35It is a classic. They have not moved this one
- 1:24:37yet. Goes back talking to my Daisy
- 1:24:40kid. Keith Jackson mentioned in that
- 1:24:42on ABC and I was about 11 years old.
- 1:24:44I still remember that. But in this space, Tennessee is
- 1:24:49not right offensively. They were coming out of the gate
- 1:24:52beating the shit out of people. Hanging 60, hanging 50, hanging
- 1:24:5570. They have went 2514 and they
- 1:25:00needed overtime to get to 23 against Florida.
- 1:25:04That offense isn't right. I think Tennessee is going to
- 1:25:08get stomped. Stomped 2 touchdowns.
- 1:25:13Alabama wins. I'll lay the 2 1/2.
- 1:25:17Everything in my brain is telling me to pick Alabama and
- 1:25:20honestly I'm probably going to regret it, but I took Tennessee
- 1:25:24just because. Sometimes you got a contrary.
- 1:25:27Sometimes you just got to say a brain no, take a take a step
- 1:25:32aside real quick. We're going to do some business.
- 1:25:34Exactly. And Miranda's riding with with
- 1:25:37you, Curtis, and so is Jason. So another split split family
- 1:25:41here. Split family again.
- 1:25:43All right, we are going out to Mormon country for the next one.
- 1:25:48BYU Oaky State. This is Miranda's pick.
- 1:25:52Oaky State I think most people probably expected this game they
- 1:25:58would be the six and O team, not BYUBYU laying a full 9 at home.
- 1:26:05Bron Siegler, What do you think about this one?
- 1:26:08I do think BYU prevails in this game, I think they are the
- 1:26:11better team, but that 9 is just a little too rich for my blood.
- 1:26:15So give me Okie State. Maybe.
- 1:26:18See, I'm the exact opposite of you.
- 1:26:20I think I seriously think Oklahoma State has completely
- 1:26:24checked out. They had one of the best running
- 1:26:26backs coming back, a like 9th year quarterback starter, solid
- 1:26:30offensive line. I think Shelton, you mentioned
- 1:26:31they had probably the most starts on their offensive line
- 1:26:35of any team in the country this year.
- 1:26:37And and they're three and three. They're pretty much out of the
- 1:26:40Big 12 race the way everything's shaped up.
- 1:26:43I think they've checked out. I think BYU is going to put it
- 1:26:46on. I think BYU wins by at least
- 1:26:50nine, if not more. I'll lay the points.
- 1:26:52BYU at home on Friday night at 10:15.
- 1:26:58Yeah, I so first of all, I love BYU.
- 1:27:00I've watched three of their games.
- 1:27:01I love everything that they're about.
- 1:27:03They're really physical team. Great job by Kalani Sataki.
- 1:27:07But I don't know, I feel like I'm taking OK state.
- 1:27:09I feel like they're due for some type of bounce back performance.
- 1:27:12I don't think they're going to win, but I think they'll do just
- 1:27:14enough to cover. But man, BYU what what?
- 1:27:17Probably one of the better, more remarkable stories of the 2024
- 1:27:21season. Just how good they've been.
- 1:27:23Absolutely. Yeah, I'm going to take BYU in
- 1:27:26this one just because I I haven't watched much of the
- 1:27:30game, but I've seen somebody come down on a kick off and
- 1:27:33absolutely annihilate somebody on that team.
- 1:27:36I can't even remember what number he was, but I was like,
- 1:27:39yeah, if they're hitting people like that, then they're probably
- 1:27:41going to win a lot of games. So I'm kind of looking at BYU to
- 1:27:45run away with this. Like you said, it kind of feel
- 1:27:47like OK State. I mean, yeah, I feel like, yeah,
- 1:27:53OK. State has kind of checked out,
- 1:27:56expected the running back to have a big year and he's kind
- 1:27:58of, you know, he's kind of chilling it seems like for the
- 1:28:02most. Did they give him a, did they
- 1:28:03give him like 7 figures? And he's just like, Nah, I'm
- 1:28:06good. Yeah, I.
- 1:28:07Don't need to do anything else myself.
- 1:28:09Right. So it's, it's crazy, but I
- 1:28:12really do think BYU is going to tap into the Mormon rituals and,
- 1:28:19I don't know, get some kind of extra power against the.
- 1:28:24All righty. These extra powers come from
- 1:28:26soaking. What's going on here?
- 1:28:28There you go. I don't know my my wife watches
- 1:28:30the Mormon live show. She could probably tell me some
- 1:28:33of the I was going. To say Curtis know a little bit
- 1:28:35more about it than we do, I don't.
- 1:28:36Watch it. The question is, is is your wife
- 1:28:39or your wife watching it too and just not telling?
- 1:28:41Y'all very likely. Possibly my wife watch a lot of
- 1:28:46crazy stuff. I don't know, babe.
- 1:28:49All right, she, she called the game, she's saying take the
- 1:28:51points. And our music Man is also saying
- 1:28:54take the points. And this actually is really good
- 1:28:57because the last game is one of the big, probably one of the big
- 1:29:02games of the year based on where these two teams are right now.
- 1:29:05We got Georgia, Texas. That is our Music Man's play of
- 1:29:09the week. And here's a little song for
- 1:29:11you. And welcome back to Guitar
- 1:29:18Elixirs and Gambling Picks. I'm Jason Long.
- 1:29:21I got a nice two game win streak going, so I'm going to keep this
- 1:29:23real. Short.
- 1:29:24This week I'm looking at that game down in Austin when Georgia
- 1:29:27visits Texas. Texas giving up 3 1/2 points.
- 1:29:32But they sure do look like the best team in college football
- 1:29:34for me, so I'm rolling with the Longhorns -3 1/2 against Jordan.
- 1:29:40As far as the song goes, there's a whole lot of good musicians.
- 1:29:44A whole lot of good songs come out of Texas.
- 1:29:47But as Waylon Jennings once said, one of those.
- 1:29:49Good Texas musicians all the way.
- 1:29:52When it comes down to Austin, Bob Wills is still king.
- 1:29:57And stay all night. Stay long and dance song, dance
- 1:30:01little long and pull off code in a corner.
- 1:30:05Don't see why I stay a little longer.
- 1:30:07Don't see why I don't stay a little longer.
- 1:30:17Hook em horns. Let's go Texas.
- 1:30:19See you next week. All right, the Music Man laying
- 1:30:253 1/2 with Texas. Brian, what about you?
- 1:30:31I'm riding with him. He, he said it right.
- 1:30:33I, I don't really have another pick for the best team in
- 1:30:37college football right now. All of the the things I've seen
- 1:30:40are pointing to Texas and I think they take care of business
- 1:30:43there at home. All righty.
- 1:30:47And that's a good point. They they just beat the crap out
- 1:30:49of Oklahoma up in the Cotton Bowl last week, one of the games
- 1:30:53that I picked completely wrong. So you think I'd get on the
- 1:30:57train, but I just can't. Georgia already has one loss and
- 1:31:01if you take a look at the back half of their schedule, they
- 1:31:04have some more difficult teams. So I think it's going to be a
- 1:31:08desperate Georgia going into Austin and I think they at least
- 1:31:13cover. I don't know if they win, but
- 1:31:16I'll take the dogs and give me 3 1/2 points.
- 1:31:22Well, Texas obviously is the best team in the country this
- 1:31:24year. I think this is somewhat of a
- 1:31:25unique year in the sense that there's not a huge gap between
- 1:31:28#1 and everybody else. That being said, Texas is still
- 1:31:32the best and I just don't trust UJ offense enough to really
- 1:31:36score against them so I'll take Texas.
- 1:31:40Daddy. Yeah, I got one of my good
- 1:31:42friends that is a big time Georgia fan.
- 1:31:45One of my good friends is a big time Texas fan.
- 1:31:48They have been through the lows and the highs with both teams,
- 1:31:50so I just lean on them to talk about their seasons.
- 1:31:54My Georgia guy says that Georgia has a lot of injuries and he is
- 1:31:58nervous. And my Texas guy just got back
- 1:32:01from Japan and said Konichiwa, he he just says that they're the
- 1:32:09best team in the nation and they're going to win.
- 1:32:11So I got to go to Texas. By injuries, does he mean
- 1:32:15traffic violations? He said injuries.
- 1:32:19I ain't going to depth with him about why people aren't playing
- 1:32:23or what's going on, but he said we got a lot of injuries, so it
- 1:32:26may be. Well, it's the middle of the
- 1:32:28football season. Everybody got injuries.
- 1:32:30You know, that's, that's too vague.
- 1:32:32He, he, he trying to. And the question is, will you
- 1:32:34invite them both over to your house Saturday and watch this
- 1:32:37night game with them or they stay away from each other?
- 1:32:40No, that probably would be pretty good.
- 1:32:42I'm not doing that because I got AI didn't think about that.
- 1:32:45It probably would have been pretty fun, but I have a, my son
- 1:32:49has homecoming, so I'll be kind of running around after that.
- 1:32:54We we had a baseball cookout during the day and then he's got
- 1:32:57homecoming that night. So we'll kind of be running
- 1:33:00around and but I'm sure I'll be talking to him on the phone and
- 1:33:03they'll be on Facebook giving each other hell.
- 1:33:06There you go. Nothing like it.
- 1:33:07Nothing like it. We know the Music Man went with
- 1:33:09Texas and I am riding alone. You were riding alone, man.
- 1:33:14Riding with the dogs, there is all of that right there.
- 1:33:19It's an interesting board. Only really two Lee fully in
- 1:33:23agreement this week. All righty.
- 1:33:25Well, y'all, it has been about 90 minutes.
- 1:33:28We have went through everything this week and that is going to
- 1:33:31wrap up this episode of the Boundary Corner podcast.
- 1:33:34But I'm going to put a little something up before it because I
- 1:33:37saw this a little earlier. I didn't get a chance to get to
- 1:33:40it. Give me one second, Brian.
- 1:33:44Did I miss it? It was just a good little
- 1:33:46statement here and it's just something there it is.

- 1:34:42Three of us are parents and we completely understand between
- 1:34:45baseball games, football games, your kids sports maybe as an
- 1:34:49activity we understand. That's why we start like would
- 1:34:52we like to start at 7:30 and be over by 9?
- 1:34:56Hell yeah we would because if we getting better at a decent hour.
- 1:34:59But we do it because we understand not everybody can get
- 1:35:02in front of a YouTube or Facebook or Twitter.
