- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Hi, Hello, Hi, Back in the studio again, back
- 0:24Speaker 1: in the saddle. Today, we're gonna knock on the door
- 0:27Speaker 1: of an old friend of yours named James.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Ah.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Okay, this is a first season episode. Yeah, way back
- 0:35Speaker 1: to me. It's one of the funniest episodes.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very funny.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And it's also one that I would come back to
- 0:45Speaker 1: when I was kind of missing my friends, when I
- 0:47Speaker 1: was missing both James and Howard, I would just put
- 0:50Speaker 1: on this episode and it felt like I could spend
- 0:52Speaker 1: a little bit of time with them. It is funny
- 0:56Speaker 1: that at the time, when we, you know, went off
- 0:59Speaker 1: on our mission for this episode full of hope and
- 1:04Speaker 1: Shenanigan's in our heart or whatever, we felt like kind
- 1:08Speaker 1: of over the hill. Well, you know, we felt like
- 1:10Speaker 1: this is like kid stuff. You know, we're like men
- 1:13Speaker 1: in our mid forties, you know, and what are we doing.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But now listening to it from the vantage point ten
- 1:20Speaker 1: years later, I feel like, Wow, were we ever so young?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Ten years? My goodness, Yeah, a lot transpires, it turns
- 1:27Speaker 1: out in the course of ten years. It certainly does. Yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 1: And at the end of the episode, I uh check
- 1:35Speaker 1: back in with James to see what his life has
- 1:37Speaker 1: been all these years later. Well, enjoy, enjoy, indeed, please
- 1:43Speaker 1: make sure the volume is set at a temperate number. Oh,
- 1:50Speaker 1: but first, a word from our sponsors. Horrible timing.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Six kids in my house, two parents and getting kids
- 2:03Speaker 3: ready for Halloween.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Jonathan Goldstein calling for doctor Jackie Cohen.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I gotta go.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Wait wait, wait, hello Jackie. Do you know what? Okay,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you're a doctor, right, hurry up. I'm starting to realize,
- 2:18Speaker 1: like in the past year, I'm hurry. I'm pretty convinced. Hi,
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm losing hair.
- 2:27Speaker 5: You're bald, balding, bald.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's a process, so bald. Now I'm trying to figure
- 2:34Speaker 1: out if it's a symptom of something to go, John,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I got to go. The party starts in fifteen minutes.
- 2:39Speaker 1: You're having a party at your house. Why didn't you
- 2:42Speaker 1: invite me over?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Do you want to just do the show?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Or From Dimlet Media. I'm Jonathan Goldstein and this is
- 3:05Speaker 1: Heavyweight Today's episode. James In When he was a kid,
- 3:20Speaker 1: James loved taking long walks with his dad, Douglas. Douglas
- 3:24Speaker 1: was a film buff, and during these walks, he'd recount
- 3:27Speaker 1: the plot to every movie he'd ever seen Hitchcock Kubrick.
- 3:31Speaker 1: James loved it, and when he grew older and finally
- 3:34Speaker 1: got to see the actual movies. As good as they were,
- 3:37Speaker 1: they often paled beside the versions. His dad told something
- 3:41Speaker 1: of a dreamer and an eccentric. Douglas lived his life
- 3:45Speaker 1: as though he himself were a character in a movie.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He died that way too. On his deathbed, he issued
- 3:51Speaker 1: an unexpected final request.
- 3:54Speaker 3: The request was that we scatter his ashes on the
- 3:59Speaker 3: eighteenth hole of the golf course he loved.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Each of Douglas's kids was handed a different task regarding
- 4:12Speaker 1: the estate. James was put in charge of the ashes.
- 4:16Speaker 3: My dad was probably the most important person to me
- 4:19Speaker 3: outside obviously my wife and kids. When he died and
- 4:25Speaker 3: when the will was recorded, I wasn't there. You were
- 4:28Speaker 3: actually there.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I think I was there.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Douglas was nearing the end and urgently needed to sign
- 4:34Speaker 1: his will, and James, who lived out of town, couldn't
- 4:38Speaker 1: make it in time, so he asked me and our
- 4:40Speaker 1: other good friend Howard, to go to his father's bedside
- 4:43Speaker 1: and bear legal witness to the signing of the will.
- 4:46Speaker 1: To this day, James still carries around a lot of
- 4:49Speaker 1: regret about not being able to be there. Although I
- 4:56Speaker 1: know it's unlikely, my memory of that day is of
- 4:59Speaker 1: Douglas wearing an ascot tucked into his hospital robe, regardless
- 5:03Speaker 1: of whether he actually was. Douglas was the kind of
- 5:06Speaker 1: man who always gave the impression of wearing an ascot
- 5:09Speaker 1: as always he was gentlemanly and cordial, this in spite
- 5:14Speaker 1: of the fact that he would pass away within the
- 5:16Speaker 1: next forty eight hours. Douglas was born an illegitimate child
- 5:27Speaker 1: in a poor part of England and raised by a
- 5:30Speaker 1: single mom. As a young man, he felt judged and
- 5:33Speaker 1: carried with him the feeling of always having to prove himself,
- 5:37Speaker 1: even going so far as to affect a posh, upper
- 5:39Speaker 1: class accent. For Douglas, golf was the domain of the
- 5:43Speaker 1: wealthy and sophisticated, and having his ashes placed on the
- 5:47Speaker 1: eighteenth hole of his beloved golf course, an event that
- 5:50Speaker 1: James says he probably envisioned being accompanied by bagpipes and artillery,
- 5:55Speaker 1: would mean finally receiving his due. But James is yet
- 5:58Speaker 1: to honor his father's request. It's now been sixteen years.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Is it just procrastination?
- 6:07Speaker 3: That's what I told myself. Yeah, I can vividly remember,
- 6:10Speaker 3: you know, a day afterwards thinking, oh, yeah, the simplest thing.
- 6:14Speaker 3: In fact, it seems so simple that we'll get to it.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And now, sixteen years later, it's very complicated. I think,
- 6:24Speaker 3: to be honest with you, there's a part of me
- 6:26Speaker 3: that wants to hold on to them because it's.
- 6:31Speaker 2: My dad.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And so the urn moved from mantles to closets for
- 6:40Speaker 1: a long time. It even knocked around in the trunk
- 6:42Speaker 1: of James's car. It now sits on a shelf in
- 6:46Speaker 1: his basement. Do you think it would be it Would
- 6:52Speaker 1: it be a load off your head if you were
- 6:54Speaker 1: able to spread the ashes.
- 6:57Speaker 3: The amount of times I cried, you know, going on
- 7:01Speaker 3: about how what a terrible son I was to not
- 7:04Speaker 3: honor his request, and the guilt I have about the
- 7:07Speaker 3: way he died, and you know I didn't deal with
- 7:10Speaker 3: it well, and.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It's all a piece.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He As he got sicker and sicker, he wanted to
- 7:20Speaker 3: go home desperately, and myself and my siblings decided he
- 7:27Speaker 3: could not go home because he was a hoarder.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Though it wasn't clear that he ever used them. Douglas
- 7:33Speaker 1: had an entire room filled solely with golf clubs. Having
- 7:37Speaker 1: lived through the war. He also saved empty TV dinner trays,
- 7:40Speaker 1: old microwaves, and broken radios that he'd find on the street.
- 7:44Speaker 3: We decided he could not go back there, and he
- 7:48Speaker 3: was so upset about that, and he went out just.
- 7:52Speaker 6: Really angry.
- 7:54Speaker 2: He just wanted to go home.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I can't fix the way he died, but this was
- 8:00Speaker 3: his one request and I haven't honored it. And not
- 8:05Speaker 3: only would I be putting to bed something that's been
- 8:11Speaker 3: dogging me for years, I think I'd also feel pretty
- 8:13Speaker 3: proud of myself that I'm the person I want.
- 8:17Speaker 1: To be, since the person I want to be is
- 8:20Speaker 1: the person who helps people be the people they want
- 8:22Speaker 1: to be. I asked James if he'd like me to
- 8:24Speaker 1: help him lay his father's ashes to rest, and James said, yes,
- 8:29Speaker 1: would you want to do that?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, of course I do.
- 8:36Speaker 1: The objective infiltrate Douglas's fancy old golf course and scatter
- 8:40Speaker 1: the ashes the obstacles except the genarian narcs with prying eyes,
- 8:45Speaker 1: not to mention the fact that scattering earthly remains is
- 8:48Speaker 1: against the law. For this to work, we need the
- 8:52Speaker 1: right team. James was the key man our entry point
- 8:55Speaker 1: into the operation and I was the bank bankrolling the
- 8:59Speaker 1: green for expenditures. All that was missing was a front man.
- 9:03Speaker 1: We needed a person of quick wit.
- 9:05Speaker 5: We have bat Cat, sat fat.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Someone cool under pressure. We needed that's I'm here Howard.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Not only was Howard our oldest friend, but he was
- 9:20Speaker 1: there with me the day the will was signed and
- 9:22Speaker 1: the directive was given. And to top it off, Howard
- 9:26Speaker 1: never met a grift, swindle or flim flam. He didn't
- 9:28Speaker 1: think was eggs and the coffee. Okay, fill your pockets
- 9:32Speaker 1: with extra after dinner mints at the local diner. Check
- 9:35Speaker 1: avail yourself. Avill gained coffee refills through a counterfeit Russian
- 9:39Speaker 1: Seniors card double check. Howard was always on the make
- 9:44Speaker 1: and up for anything. The date had been set Sunday,
- 9:51Speaker 1: which also, as it happens, was Father's Day. The team
- 9:55Speaker 1: was in place. We just needed to sort out logistics.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Thursday eight forty eight pm. Howard, Hey, Hi, hi, Hi, Hello,
- 10:07Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with James.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Hi.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I just wanted to get us all together to strategize
- 10:13Speaker 1: a little bit. So, Howard, is there any wisdom or
- 10:17Speaker 1: experience that you could bring to bear from you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: past things, that you've done like this.
- 10:22Speaker 4: From my previous heist experience. Yeah, well we shouldn't do
- 10:26Speaker 4: as we get too high. Yeah, that's in one. Some
- 10:29Speaker 4: booze maybe might help steal our nerves.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So do you want to try to go there and
- 10:36Speaker 1: play golf?
- 10:38Speaker 4: No, I've never golfed.
- 10:39Speaker 6: I don't know how to golf, so I've never golfed either.
- 10:42Speaker 6: And it's the eighteenth hole too, so I wish it
- 10:44Speaker 6: was the first hole because we could just go and
- 10:46Speaker 6: suck and then do our thing.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah, specimically needs the eighteenth hole.
- 10:51Speaker 6: Right, eighteenth hole, it's a last hole.
- 10:53Speaker 4: But if there's someone there watching us, how we how
- 10:56Speaker 4: do we do it?
- 10:57Speaker 6: The clubhouse is near the eighteenth hole. It looks over
- 11:00Speaker 6: the eighteenth hole, so that's another challenge.
- 11:03Speaker 4: What the clubhouse?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Clearly there was a lot of work to be done.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Nine two pm. A quick look at the golf course
- 11:18Speaker 1: website reveals a very specific dress code polo shirts, belts,
- 11:23Speaker 1: golf shoes, something called a tilly hat. If wearing a
- 11:26Speaker 1: polo shirt with some kind of bonnet wasn't embarrassing enough,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the rules explicitly stated that all shirts were to be
- 11:33Speaker 1: tucked in to your pants for this to work. We
- 11:37Speaker 1: need to honor the dress code to a t. In short,
- 11:41Speaker 1: we need the best disguises money could buy, and as
- 11:44Speaker 1: the bank, it was my job to secure the greenbacks.
- 11:48Speaker 1: After a brief parlay with Gimblet founder in CEO Alex Bloomberg,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I'm told my budget is fifty dollars, to which I say,
- 11:56Speaker 1: but I've already promised the crew I take them shopping
- 11:59Speaker 1: at JC Penny and now I'll look like an idiot,
- 12:01Speaker 1: to which he says what crew, and I say never mind.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Alex then tells me to take it up with Matt
- 12:07Speaker 1: because he's in the middle of a boardroom meeting. But
- 12:10Speaker 1: Matt scares me, so I just convert the green to
- 12:12Speaker 1: Canadian travelers checks, a safe, responsible move. So Alex, if
- 12:15Speaker 1: you're listening, you should at least cover the service fees.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Except you probably aren't listening because you're too busy with
- 12:20Speaker 1: your precious startup. So although it probably wasn't the kind
- 12:27Speaker 1: of establishment James's posh dad Douglas would approve of, we'd
- 12:31Speaker 1: need to hit the only place we could afford after you,
- 12:35Speaker 1: all right, Friday twelve thirty six pm. It turns out
- 12:40Speaker 1: the sports section of a Goodwill can be a pretty
- 12:43Speaker 1: sad place, unstrung badminton rackets, water logged nerve footballs you
- 12:48Speaker 1: only hope are logged with water.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And one boxing glove.
- 12:52Speaker 1: That's the As an advanced student of the heist film
- 12:55Speaker 1: as genre, I know that when pulling off a big job,
- 12:58Speaker 1: the perfect outfit is crucial. Think Michael Kaine's lux white
- 13:02Speaker 1: turtleneck in The Italian Job or Elliott Gould's neckerchief in
- 13:07Speaker 1: Ocean's eleven.
- 13:09Speaker 3: They have some very nice slacks here, I will say,
- 13:12Speaker 3: and the prices are very affordable.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You want to try on the polo shirts, not exactly
- 13:16Speaker 1: Frankie munez is wrap around shades and agent Cody Banks,
- 13:20Speaker 1: but it'll have to do.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Look at these two, Oh, it's like rayon.
- 13:27Speaker 1: The good news is that the Goodwill has changing rooms.
- 13:30Speaker 1: The bad news is that there's only one, and it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: about the size of a bus station toilet stall. I'm
- 13:36Speaker 1: going to come in with you, but since we are
- 13:37Speaker 1: a a team and be absolutely fearless together, we cram
- 13:42Speaker 1: in and like any team would strip completely naked. That
- 13:47Speaker 1: might be the uglies. It bears mentioning that the shirt
- 13:52Speaker 1: Howard is referring to is creamsicle orange and bears the
- 13:56Speaker 1: logo of a plumbing company, and luckiest of lucky days,
- 14:01Speaker 1: he's found the exact same shirts for me and James.
- 14:04Speaker 1: This way, he reasons, we can all match like a crew.
- 14:09Speaker 5: He looks good. It's supposed to look good. It's golfing.
- 14:15Speaker 5: Oh man.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Howard, James and I have known each other since we're teenagers.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Back then we used to hang out like this all
- 14:22Speaker 1: the time, just doing goofy stuff. But we now live
- 14:25Speaker 1: in separate cities with wives, kids, jobs, and we never
- 14:29Speaker 1: get to do this kind of thing anymore. Standing around
- 14:32Speaker 1: in the middle of the afternoon, laughing in the buff
- 14:34Speaker 1: with old friends feels nice.
- 14:42Speaker 3: So this is good. We got We've got shirts, and
- 14:46Speaker 3: I got a belt.
- 14:47Speaker 1: As we exit into the parking lot, our plastic sacks
- 14:50Speaker 1: plump with glad rags, something straight up magical happens.
- 14:54Speaker 4: God.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Before getting too excited about what we think we might
- 14:58Speaker 1: be seeing, possibly, we wait confirmation from the man who
- 15:02Speaker 1: can spot a con a mile off a double rainbow.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's legit a double rainbow. And even Howard's impressed mildly,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and so James and I give ourselves over fully overcome
- 15:17Speaker 1: by this fortuitous sign. The crew was moved to song.
- 15:21Speaker 5: So it was red and purple and crimson and green
- 15:25Speaker 5: apple and.
- 15:26Speaker 1: A rainbow was a good omen like James's dad, Douglas
- 15:29Speaker 1: was looking down on us and smiling a big multicolored
- 15:32Speaker 1: upside down smile.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And jen blue.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Sure we were dressed to the eighteens, but if we
- 15:42Speaker 1: each took forty five minutes to sink a ball from
- 15:45Speaker 1: two feet away, we might attract suspicion. We needed to
- 15:49Speaker 1: train hard. I'm talking rocky running through waist high Russian
- 15:54Speaker 1: snow hard, a montage of steel drum musicians learning to
- 15:58Speaker 1: play Chariots of Fire set to the tune of Ayah
- 16:01Speaker 1: the Tiger hard. I'm talking actually learning how to play golf.
- 16:12Speaker 1: We find a driving range in the fancier part of
- 16:14Speaker 1: town and book a golf pro by the name of Stephen. Saturday,
- 16:20Speaker 1: one pm. Are you Stephen, Hey, Stephen, I'm Jonathan, This
- 16:25Speaker 1: is Howard, and this is James.
- 16:27Speaker 5: This is Stephen.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Stephen a smile with more dimples than the golf balls.
- 16:32Speaker 1: He lovingly cradles a tall drink of sports aqua velva
- 16:36Speaker 1: ou de toilette. If ever, there was Stephen's been golfing
- 16:40Speaker 1: professionally for over twenty years, and couldn't be nicer or
- 16:44Speaker 1: better smelling and considering the frantic barrage of imbecilic questions,
- 16:49Speaker 1: we ask he also couldn't be more patient.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Those official golf shoes. Yeah, well I want good questions
- 16:55Speaker 5: and stupid what a golfer think about? Like happy Gilmore?
- 16:57Speaker 5: Can we like that they find that they find insulting?
- 17:03Speaker 1: After a brief lecture on the basic how tos hit
- 17:06Speaker 1: ball with stick, cold stick, with hands, get ball in hole,
- 17:10Speaker 1: we're ready. We insist James go first. After all, this
- 17:15Speaker 1: is his mission, every want of whose doings is finished
- 17:18Speaker 1: just like this. Yeah, we're going to get to the well.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Stephen tenderly positions James hips and elbows. Howard grabs my
- 17:24Speaker 1: microphone and golf commentates.
- 17:27Speaker 5: I'd say he looks really, really horrible. It's just ridiculous looking.
- 17:31Speaker 5: I'm not encouraging.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Somehow James manages to connect on his very first try.
- 17:41Speaker 4: That's good.
- 17:42Speaker 5: Everyone's saying very encouraging things. But it's really horrible. Is
- 17:45Speaker 5: the same. But he got it.
- 17:46Speaker 1: It went in the air and he hit it.
- 17:47Speaker 5: It's like you say to a child. He's like, good
- 17:50Speaker 5: you hit it.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Stephen looks over at Howard, who now squats in the grass,
- 17:54Speaker 1: untying and retying his two left footed Goodwill issued golf shoes.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And then he looks over at me, a grown man
- 18:02Speaker 1: in a two large tilly hat, strings cinched tight enough
- 18:05Speaker 1: beneath the chin to ensure the clenched, jawed vocal affect
- 18:08Speaker 1: of a young Atharine. Hepburn. He waives us to come hither,
- 18:12Speaker 1: offering up something in the way of inspiration.
- 18:16Speaker 5: I'm gonna try to make it go from right to left.
- 18:18Speaker 2: It must feel really good when you get it up
- 18:20Speaker 2: in the air like that.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Well, it's great because that's the goal, right, is to
- 18:23Speaker 5: get it up.
- 18:26Speaker 1: The golf ball flies straight up into the air, and then,
- 18:29Speaker 1: as though eerily achieving human consciousness in mid flight, suddenly
- 18:34Speaker 1: takes a sharp left wa so cool. Howard, baptized in
- 18:39Speaker 1: the backsplash of Stephen's pheromones, is born again. He's seen
- 18:43Speaker 1: the pinnacle of male perfection, and James, it is not see.
- 18:48Speaker 4: James, that's what it looks like. That's when a man
- 18:51Speaker 4: hits a golf ball. A male of the species is
- 18:53Speaker 4: a golf ball.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Next up is Howard. He steps to the tee grips
- 18:58Speaker 1: the club, and just the way Stephen instructed, does this
- 19:01Speaker 1: adorable waddle back and forth to get his footing just so.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And then did you hear that? Let me play it
- 19:10Speaker 1: again thrice a swing and a miss, a swing and
- 19:16Speaker 1: a miss, a swing and a miss.
- 19:18Speaker 5: That's too much. Well, but if you're losing your balance
- 19:20Speaker 5: swings fast. The first twenty five years are tough.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Oh Steven, all this and funny too. My attempts were
- 19:31Speaker 1: just as fruitless. As it turns out, golf is hard.
- 19:35Speaker 1: We wonder if Douglas knew just how difficult a mission
- 19:38Speaker 1: he'd sent us on.
- 19:39Speaker 3: How would we do without the golf pro standing there
- 19:42Speaker 3: helping us?
- 19:43Speaker 1: You know the difference between golf clubs, And.
- 19:46Speaker 3: There's a wet No, I don't, not really, I mean
- 19:50Speaker 3: I know it's.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Lemedge driver, putter, one iron, two iron, three iron, putter, driver.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Pudder.
- 20:02Speaker 1: One am. It's the night before the job, and the
- 20:06Speaker 1: reality of our situation begins to set in. How can
- 20:10Speaker 1: any sting be stung when the would be stingers absolutely
- 20:13Speaker 1: stink at golf? Clearly this plan wasn't going to work,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and so at a quarter to two in the morning,
- 20:20Speaker 1: panic set in.
- 20:22Speaker 4: It's impossible.
- 20:23Speaker 5: It's impossible for us to play golf.
- 20:25Speaker 4: We would suck so hard we would never make it
- 20:27Speaker 4: off the first fucking hole.
- 20:28Speaker 5: And if we knocked the balls anywhere.
- 20:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm with you, it's like.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Only how to fucking juggle. It's like it's it's an
- 20:33Speaker 4: incredibly impossible thing to do. It's gonna be so obvious
- 20:36Speaker 4: that there's something's up because we've never fucking golfed.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the issue. If we're doing any sort of subterfuge,
- 20:41Speaker 6: we're going to be the most obvious, conspicuous people in
- 20:44Speaker 6: the world, vicious. And then we'll have to get all
- 20:46Speaker 6: the way to the eighteenth holl That takes hours, I
- 20:49Speaker 6: mean literally hours, even if you're good, literally Yeah, and
- 20:51Speaker 6: then try to get the ashes out forget it.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Two fifteen am. Do you guys know what? Stomp rockets
- 20:58Speaker 1: are growing desperate? We chuck the old plan and begin
- 21:01Speaker 1: to free associate new plans.
- 21:03Speaker 6: We need a T shirt cannon. Well you know actually
- 21:05Speaker 6: that that could work.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Three zho five am.
- 21:10Speaker 4: What if we dumped them into say, like a balloon
- 21:13Speaker 4: and then filled it with water and then whip them
- 21:17Speaker 4: so they'll explode all on the eighteenth Green and that's it.
- 21:20Speaker 1: This was going nowhere. So I raised the possibility of
- 21:24Speaker 1: our pulling off a night job for those of you
- 21:26Speaker 1: squares who need to be hept to it. That's a
- 21:29Speaker 1: job one performs at night.
- 21:31Speaker 4: I think they might have dogs.
- 21:32Speaker 6: What if they think we're like terrorists or something super
- 21:34Speaker 6: super posh exclusive club going late at night with someone's
- 21:38Speaker 6: human remains, which is fucking totally illegal. Yeah, I mean
- 21:40Speaker 6: they must have some sort of security there.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Well, hunch percent.
- 21:43Speaker 1: The sun was coming up soon, So I suggest that,
- 21:46Speaker 1: like in Dog Day Afternoon or Reservoir Dogs, or really
- 21:49Speaker 1: any other movies about dogs that I've also not seen
- 21:52Speaker 1: but can only assume have happy, heartwarming endings, maybe we
- 21:56Speaker 1: just show up during the day and hope for the best.
- 22:00Speaker 6: This idea, Okay, that works for me, they.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Liked After the break the a team of golf sets
- 22:08Speaker 1: off on its mission.
- 22:10Speaker 5: I want to be golf Lungren and you can be
- 22:12Speaker 5: mister t t o E.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Right, gotcha?
- 22:15Speaker 1: I want one of mine.
- 22:16Speaker 5: You just know it's wedge. Your Reginald Van cleef.
- 22:40Speaker 7: Yous want to drink Scotch yet?
- 22:42Speaker 5: Maybe on ice? Sure? Thank you?
- 22:46Speaker 1: Sunday eight ten am father's day arrives, a beautiful one
- 22:51Speaker 1: in Montreal. James says, it's a lot like the day
- 22:54Speaker 1: Douglas died. We all rendezvous at the safe house, which
- 22:58Speaker 1: also happens to be Howard's wreck room. James has held
- 23:02Speaker 1: on to his dad's arn for sixteen years, but he's
- 23:04Speaker 1: always kept it in the velvet bag it came with,
- 23:07Speaker 1: so he's never actually handled it. Earlier in the day, though,
- 23:10Speaker 1: in anticipation of the job, he withdrew it. And if
- 23:14Speaker 1: there was any question about just how much Douglas loved golf,
- 23:17Speaker 1: it was immediately answered by what was revealed. Etched into
- 23:21Speaker 1: the side of the urn was a golfer in mid swing.
- 23:29Speaker 8: It hears to you, Dad, don't you some of Brucy's
- 23:33Speaker 8: poop bags that are actually unsentive, which is kind of nice.
- 23:35Speaker 8: We're gonna use these to transfer some of James's beloved's
- 23:39Speaker 8: father's ashes in't here.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Herod had the idea of using his pugs poop bags
- 23:43Speaker 1: to separate the ashes into portions for each of us.
- 23:47Speaker 1: His reasoning, should one of us get pinched by some
- 23:49Speaker 1: golf clubhouse Johnny Law, the two surviving members of the
- 23:53Speaker 1: crew could still carry out the job.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Oh my god, this is so strange.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Oh what a business.
- 23:59Speaker 6: I know, what a business?
- 24:00Speaker 5: I death, what business.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Well, I'm glad you, I'm glad.
- 24:04Speaker 3: I'm I've had a couple of drinks still getting off,
- 24:07Speaker 3: sent them out, But I'm really glad you guys are.
- 24:08Speaker 6: Doing this with me.
- 24:11Speaker 3: You're part of this thing. For sixteen years, was there
- 24:13Speaker 3: was this sort of fear that I wouldn't be able
- 24:15Speaker 3: to handle dealing with.
- 24:16Speaker 2: It, the physicality of it.
- 24:18Speaker 3: But if there's something I'm now grateful for it, and
- 24:20Speaker 3: I wonder if there was some wisdom in it, is
- 24:22Speaker 3: that he has compelled me to deal with this. I've
- 24:26Speaker 3: never cursed him for it, but I've been angry. I've
- 24:29Speaker 3: never been angry, but I've been I don't know what
- 24:31Speaker 3: the word is, sort of like fuck. You know, you
- 24:32Speaker 3: couldn't just go without, you couldn't just die. You had
- 24:35Speaker 3: to make this somewhat absurd, ridiculous request that was impractical
- 24:40Speaker 3: and almost impossible to achieve. But I'm right saying right
- 24:43Speaker 3: now kind of almost grateful for it. So let's hope,
- 24:47Speaker 3: let's hope we're successful.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Today eight twenty five a m. As we set off
- 24:55Speaker 1: on the job, Howard show's doubts about his outfit.
- 24:58Speaker 5: I looked like a fat failure of a dentist. I
- 25:01Speaker 5: looked like I lost my practice because I put dentures
- 25:03Speaker 5: in a child's mouth.
- 25:09Speaker 1: As we near the golf course, James grows silent. Am
- 25:15Speaker 1: I have part in a space?
- 25:17Speaker 5: All right? Good show?
- 25:19Speaker 1: How are you feeling nervous? I'm going to park near here,
- 25:23Speaker 1: just for a quick getaway from the parking lot. We
- 25:29Speaker 1: wind our way towards the green. Maybe it's testament to
- 25:32Speaker 1: a tillie had cocked at just the right angle. But
- 25:34Speaker 1: nobody seems to be stopping us. We have infiltrated.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Like how manicured it is. It's like it's like it
- 25:41Speaker 4: looks like a pool table. Also, it was a pile
- 25:44Speaker 4: of ashes there in the middle.
- 25:46Speaker 1: The golf course is what you'd expect, green grass as
- 25:49Speaker 1: far as the eye can see, trees, ponds. It's beautiful
- 25:53Speaker 1: and under normal circumstances, it'd make us feel peaceful like,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but just now it's making us feel out of place,
- 26:00Speaker 1: reminding us of who we are. Three frightened middle aged
- 26:04Speaker 1: man dressed in discarded plumbing company uniforms, struggling under the
- 26:08Speaker 1: weight of our bully knapsacks and a mission that just
- 26:11Speaker 1: now feels too big for us. I don't know, should
- 26:21Speaker 1: we just try to go to the eighteenth hole or
- 26:22Speaker 1: should we go in?
- 26:24Speaker 2: And that's I believe that's it, isn't it?
- 26:27Speaker 1: As it turns out, the eighteenth hole is the hole
- 26:30Speaker 1: nearest the parking lot. That red flag right destination screen
- 26:36Speaker 1: of the eighteenth hole, and that is it.
- 26:39Speaker 5: It is the most conspicuous hole. So thanks a lot
- 26:42Speaker 5: that right now we can Right now we're gonna washing, even.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Now we decided to play it cool case the joint.
- 26:55Speaker 1: We make our way to the ninth hole, which is
- 26:57Speaker 1: out of view, and it's here that fear sets in,
- 27:01Speaker 1: and with it bargaining.
- 27:04Speaker 3: The ninth hole, Dad, right here be perfect. I could
- 27:06Speaker 3: go with the whole urned dump it.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Maybe he liked the screen, he likes, he liked the
- 27:09Speaker 2: whole golf course.
- 27:10Speaker 5: It wasn't his.
- 27:11Speaker 2: But I know this is the back nine.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I know he liked about next denial.
- 27:15Speaker 5: That's my question.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Why don't your dad, who is an avid golfer, who
- 27:18Speaker 4: is probably really really serious about these games, why would
- 27:20Speaker 4: he want to put his ashes on the green which
- 27:22Speaker 4: would interfere with another golfers.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I suggest we cool our heels in the clubhouse, and
- 27:30Speaker 1: the boys agree. It turns out that that evening is
- 27:33Speaker 1: a Father's Day banquet, so the staff is rushing to prepare,
- 27:37Speaker 1: which allows us to wander around relatively unnoticed. The club
- 27:41Speaker 1: goes back about one hundred years and on the walls
- 27:44Speaker 1: are hung old brown and white photos and plaques commemorating
- 27:47Speaker 1: the members who've died fighting in both World Wars. Since
- 27:51Speaker 1: almost the start of our mission, James had expressed a
- 27:54Speaker 1: fear that maybe no one at the club would even
- 27:56Speaker 1: remember his dad. Douglas was just such a loner that
- 27:59Speaker 1: over the years James had never met any of his friends.
- 28:02Speaker 1: As far as he knew, he didn't really have any.
- 28:05Speaker 1: There was a lot about his dad he didn't know,
- 28:08Speaker 1: like whether he was even an good at golf. So
- 28:10Speaker 1: we was hoping he might find some small trace of
- 28:12Speaker 1: him here, a photo, or even his name on a
- 28:16Speaker 1: list somewhere. Oh the registreet we find a large, old
- 28:20Speaker 1: looking book that lists every champion in the course's history. Wow,
- 28:25Speaker 1: it goes back to nineteen o three wounds up.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I mean, I'm sure he's probably documented in some books somewhere.
- 28:33Speaker 3: It's just, of course, I'll find it.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Do you want to check that book? Did you look
- 28:39Speaker 1: through will?
- 28:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 28:40Speaker 1: I didn't see anything of her. Since the book won't talk,
- 28:43Speaker 1: we look for someone who will. We stop every staff
- 28:46Speaker 1: member and golfer who looks old enough and ask if
- 28:49Speaker 1: they remember Douglas.
- 28:50Speaker 7: I'm saying that Douglas Hurst.
- 28:51Speaker 1: The passed away in two thousand. We're hoping to find
- 28:53Speaker 1: some sort of side of him.
- 28:55Speaker 2: But yet I don't know.
- 28:56Speaker 1: The name doesn't ring a bell.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Douglas Hurst a long time ago.
- 28:59Speaker 6: People who remember him and I played six in the morning.
- 29:02Speaker 5: So the only guys I know are the grass.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I didn't know him, No, Dice and Hill.
- 29:09Speaker 5: Dug Hurst, you guys knew him?
- 29:11Speaker 4: Sure that.
- 29:15Speaker 1: In a basement room, squeezed into an armchair watching golf
- 29:18Speaker 1: on TV, is Serge Sarge, a French Canadian bulldog of
- 29:29Speaker 1: a man. He pours fistfuls of mixed nuts into his mouth,
- 29:32Speaker 1: which he washes down with generous slugs from his beer.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Craizy dog.
- 29:37Speaker 5: That's you.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Through the half jar of fancy cocktail nuts crammed into
- 29:42Speaker 1: his grizzled ma. You might not be able to understand
- 29:45Speaker 1: the words. Sarge is desperately trying to choke out. He's
- 29:49Speaker 1: saying crazy Doug. Crazy Doug is his nickname for James's dad.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so glad I found someone who remembered him.
- 29:58Speaker 1: We asked a few people and not too many of
- 29:59Speaker 1: you know.
- 30:00Speaker 4: Bambernham helped me find in maybe a staff member who
- 30:02Speaker 4: had been here a while and no one knew a
- 30:03Speaker 4: lot of you.
- 30:05Speaker 7: I'm very well.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So is he a good golf player?
- 30:08Speaker 5: Was he good?
- 30:09Speaker 7: It was a good golfer? Using Yeah, it was like
- 30:14Speaker 7: I was it eight or nine handicap? Okay, Oh, that's
- 30:18Speaker 7: very good. He is like the top five percent of
- 30:23Speaker 7: all the golfers in the world.
- 30:25Speaker 1: So he was very good. He was very good, and
- 30:28Speaker 1: he was dedicated. The room full of golf clubs that
- 30:31Speaker 1: James had thought was garbage, Sarah spoke of it with respect.
- 30:35Speaker 1: He called it the largest most complete collection of golf
- 30:38Speaker 1: clubs in all of Canada. You never want to hear
- 30:42Speaker 1: someone refer to a person you love by a pet
- 30:44Speaker 1: name prefixed by the word crazy. But the benefit is
- 30:48Speaker 1: that when they tell you stuff about your dad, you
- 30:50Speaker 1: know they're being honest. So when Sarah says what he
- 30:53Speaker 1: says next, James knows he can believe him.
- 30:57Speaker 7: I don't think I have ever met somebody as brilliant
- 31:02Speaker 7: as your death, the level depth of knowledge about everything.
- 31:09Speaker 7: But on the other side, he was also very I
- 31:12Speaker 7: wasn't not.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Too shy, isolated like executive.
- 31:16Speaker 7: Yeah, he quickly alone. We saw him very rarely on
- 31:20Speaker 7: the clubhouse.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think it was because he was a bit of
- 31:23Speaker 3: a loner.
- 31:24Speaker 1: But he did love for.
- 31:25Speaker 3: People, and he loved the people here, and he did
- 31:27Speaker 3: love all his friends here. But he really loved to
- 31:29Speaker 3: come at six in the morning when he could just
- 31:31Speaker 3: do his thing.
- 31:32Speaker 2: That was very my father. That's what I really used
- 31:33Speaker 2: to say, dude, it's very my father.
- 31:35Speaker 3: And it's not that he didn't like people. He just
- 31:37Speaker 3: liked to do things at his speed, his way, and
- 31:40Speaker 3: be done because he was sort of a loner.
- 31:42Speaker 2: He was a loner.
- 31:43Speaker 1: He's my father.
- 31:44Speaker 7: You're the son of your father.
- 31:51Speaker 1: And with that, it's time for James to become the
- 31:54Speaker 1: son his father had asked him to be and do
- 31:57Speaker 1: the job we came for.
- 32:00Speaker 4: And I think it's a great a way that we
- 32:01Speaker 4: just we're just walking around, we're members, members, sons.
- 32:04Speaker 1: We head back outside and walk with purpose to the
- 32:07Speaker 1: eighteenth hole. Fate would have it. The coast is clear.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Actually, James, your hand right now here just just kind
- 32:16Speaker 4: of just just kind of cool.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Yeah, tire shoe, tire shoe, this opportunity right now. Let's
- 32:21Speaker 5: walk with.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Him, with Howard on his left and me on his right.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We walked James out to the green, doing our best
- 32:27Speaker 1: to protect him from view.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Yeah, but we're walking with you. Say something.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Maybe I will say something in my head.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Do you want to say something in your head?
- 32:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm just saying something in my head.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Okay, Well, we're actually doing this.
- 32:48Speaker 5: This is incredible because you're actually doing it right now.
- 32:50Speaker 5: This is actually happening.
- 32:51Speaker 4: He's actually putting his dad's ashes right on the eighteenth hole,
- 32:54Speaker 4: just like he wanted.
- 32:55Speaker 5: We didn't think this would be possible.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Actually, James just tip this hat he put he just
- 32:58Speaker 4: dumped it right into the eighteenth hole.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Pre discreet. I got it right in the hole. That
- 33:06Speaker 5: felt really good.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I'm really glad.
- 33:08Speaker 5: Right in the hole.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I feel great.
- 33:11Speaker 5: I feel awesome.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Howard and I are feeling pretty good too. This is
- 33:21Speaker 1: the last time James would ever get to do something
- 33:23Speaker 1: his dad had asked him to do, and we're proud
- 33:26Speaker 1: to be a small part of it. We put our
- 33:28Speaker 1: arms around our friend's neck and pat his back.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Okay, well you got back home.
- 33:37Speaker 5: That's incredible.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Happy father's Day. Happy father's Day.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Happy father's Day. Worked up perfectly.
- 33:46Speaker 1: And James is right, it has kind of worked out perfectly. Sure,
- 33:51Speaker 1: unlike the end of heist films like Reservoir Dogs, we
- 33:54Speaker 1: weren't sipping drinks from a coconut on a beautiful beach.
- 33:57Speaker 1: But James had become the person he wanted to be,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and I had become the person who helped him become
- 34:02Speaker 1: the person he wanted to be. And Howard, well, he'd
- 34:06Speaker 1: become the person who fills up a dog poop bag
- 34:08Speaker 1: with free golf clubhouse dinner mint. So all in all,
- 34:12Speaker 1: it was a happy ending.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Thank you guys for doing this.
- 34:16Speaker 4: James had a fistful of his father's ashes in his hand,
- 34:19Speaker 4: and he walked onto that green like a dawn bend
- 34:22Speaker 4: onto one. He tipped his hat and just dumped it
- 34:24Speaker 4: right into the hole and clean right in the hole.
- 34:27Speaker 4: That was a hole in one.
- 34:28Speaker 5: That's what I would say.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Now that the Fernitures returned to its goodwill home, now
- 35:02Speaker 3: that the last month's rent is skiming with the.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Damage the plaz this moment to do so if we
- 35:14Speaker 1: if we.
- 35:18Speaker 5: Felt around for from things that accidentally.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Hello, my friend, how are you? Very nice to see you?
- 35:29Speaker 3: And uh, yeah, I was just listening to the episode
- 35:33Speaker 3: this morning, so oh hold on, hold on okay.
- 35:37Speaker 2: And I'm not giving one sec. I'm not hearing anything.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Give me one sec. Okay, I see what's happening here.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Hey, so sorry about that. So sorry, that's okay. I
- 35:47Speaker 1: mean we're going to a lot of trouble for the sound,
- 35:49Speaker 1: which I really appreciate.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Does it sound good though?
- 35:51Speaker 3: Does it sound okay?
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds good. I mean it might not match
- 35:55Speaker 1: when we initially got on, so let's just back up.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I will say hello, hello Jonathan, how are you? I'm good?
- 36:01Speaker 5: How are you?
- 36:03Speaker 2: I'm very good.
- 36:04Speaker 1: We're such a couple of show biz phonies.
- 36:06Speaker 2: That's right, Yes, yes we are.
- 36:09Speaker 1: So you were saying that you were you were just
- 36:12Speaker 1: listening to the episode this morning.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Yeah. I hadn't listened to it, probably since it came out,
- 36:19Speaker 3: and as it happened, I was driving my son to school,
- 36:22Speaker 3: as I do, and I drive him to school because
- 36:25Speaker 3: he won't make it if I don't and also it
- 36:27Speaker 3: is a nice little father and son time. It's usually
- 36:29Speaker 3: passed in silence, but I said, hey, today, we've got
- 36:33Speaker 3: to we got to listen to this podcast.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Has he has he ever listened to the episode before?
- 36:38Speaker 5: No?
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yeah, what did he say?
- 36:40Speaker 3: He was impressed in that? Okay, well those are not
- 36:43Speaker 3: the words he used, but I could My gaba meter
- 36:47Speaker 3: is pretty good, my gabe dar is pretty good. And
- 36:50Speaker 3: I did see that he was impressed. I guess for me,
- 36:56Speaker 3: it was really great to listen to the podcast again
- 36:58Speaker 3: because what I got out of it. What was interesting
- 37:03Speaker 3: for me, One is that just being with you and Howard,
- 37:07Speaker 3: my two best friends. That was the big thing was
- 37:10Speaker 3: was Wow, I just love these guys. So that's the
- 37:13Speaker 3: main thing I took away from it. The other thing
- 37:17Speaker 3: is that hearing it again ten years later with my son,
- 37:21Speaker 3: I'm such a different person.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Then, How do you mean?
- 37:25Speaker 3: Because I, you know, my parents have been both been
- 37:27Speaker 3: dead for for a very long time now. My mother
- 37:30Speaker 3: died I think within about a year of that recording,
- 37:32Speaker 3: and that was ten years ago. So I'm not a
- 37:34Speaker 3: son anymore.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I'm a father. That's who I am.
- 37:38Speaker 3: So to listen to it with my son, it was
- 37:40Speaker 3: completely different, just a completely different experience. I think when
- 37:44Speaker 3: we were recording that it was still very much my father's son.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Yeah. You you've not been back to the golf course
- 37:51Speaker 1: to visit, have you?
- 37:53Speaker 5: No? I have not.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Have you kept in touch with Stairs?
- 37:56Speaker 3: No, not at all.
