Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast, first recap pod, and a victorious
- 0:26Speaker 1: Swan Hunter's Arberniki Austin Rose, Dakota Free Tag. The first
- 0:30Speaker 1: time since twenty nineteen Nebraska has won it season opener.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Also our first home opener since twenty nineteen, moving us
- 0:39Speaker 1: to eighty six, fourteen and three and season openers.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Wow, I was not ready for that that I feel like,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I mean, what is that compared to the national average?
- 0:52Speaker 2: I mean it's quite higher, but I can't imagine the
- 0:54Speaker 2: national average is much lower.
- 0:56Speaker 3: No, because usually you start out with team like this
- 0:59Speaker 3: right it out with road conference games like you guys
- 1:01Speaker 3: I've been doing.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It was nice to get back to a game like
- 1:07Speaker 1: this that went how it should have. We took care
- 1:13Speaker 1: of business when we needed to, defense showed up, played
- 1:18Speaker 1: well offensively. Things looked a lot better than last year,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and the Spore took care of itself. Everything I think
- 1:29Speaker 1: is pretty positive right now in Nebraska Nation.
- 1:34Speaker 4: What do you guys think?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, it's definitely positive. Everyone's excited about what
- 1:42Speaker 2: they saw, especially from the quarterback play. But it's also
- 1:46Speaker 2: of those games where you know, it's kind of a
- 1:47Speaker 2: lose lose game. Is if you don't win the right way,
- 1:51Speaker 2: you're sad and if you lose, you're definitely sad. So
- 1:54Speaker 2: we won the right way. But it's more of a
- 1:57Speaker 2: we're not unhappy. I don't know if like people are
- 2:01Speaker 2: like I mean, people are excited. It definitely helped, but
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't know if it's like a holy shit, did
- 2:07Speaker 2: you guys see the Huskers this weekend sort of energy.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's I get those teams. You want to
- 2:17Speaker 3: come out looking good. I wouldn't say you looked great.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You looked good and it's your first win. And when
- 2:25Speaker 3: you say five years, first first first game win, and yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 3: like you said, lose, lose situation. You just want to
- 2:30Speaker 3: come out those games, take care of business and go
- 2:34Speaker 3: on next week.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I said it when we did the ranking the most
- 2:38Speaker 1: important games. I didn't care really what happened. I think, yeah,
- 2:42Speaker 1: it's nice to look good in your opener, but this
- 2:45Speaker 1: is not a game that I ever thought we were
- 2:47Speaker 1: going to lose. Now, I will say the nerves kicked
- 2:50Speaker 1: in Friday night Saturday morning, they did, and.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Luckily I will in the first quarter was.
- 2:59Speaker 2: The first chord, when they had that forty two second drive,
- 3:02Speaker 2: I was like, oh no, yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Uh, and then you fumble next drive, You're like, oh,
- 3:10Speaker 3: here we go.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It went like early on it went kind of how
- 3:14Speaker 1: I thought it would go. I and then I will say,
- 3:18Speaker 1: second quarter on, we really kicked hitting gear. I thought
- 3:23Speaker 1: Scottie Waldron would have some stuff up his sleeves.
- 3:26Speaker 4: He did.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He had a lot of movement, a lot of moving guys,
- 3:28Speaker 1: But that didn't really seem to phase us. Outside of
- 3:31Speaker 1: that one drive where they went very very high tempo
- 3:34Speaker 1: and then caught a ball over the.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Top, very well thrown ball.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Weal. Yeah, So we're gonna see a lot more of
- 3:41Speaker 1: that next week into the Colorado game, and we'll talk
- 3:47Speaker 1: a lot more about that on our preview episode on Wednesday.
- 3:51Speaker 4: We want to.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Spend the day really recapping the game, our thoughts. In
- 3:57Speaker 1: the past, we've given our grades on a different positions.
- 4:00Speaker 4: That was good.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I didn't mind that, But this this year, we're gonna
- 4:04Speaker 1: do a little bit different. We're gonna just talk about
- 4:06Speaker 1: big story headlines maybe can be as detailed as we
- 4:10Speaker 1: want with them, things that we noticed, things that are
- 4:13Speaker 1: worth calling out that.
- 4:17Speaker 4: We're good, bad, all of the above. So I'm starting
- 4:23Speaker 4: I'm gonna.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Start right off with our offensive line and allowing one
- 4:27Speaker 1: sack to UTEP, and then on top of that, how
- 4:33Speaker 1: they blocked Westmoreland on the edge. I think that was
- 4:36Speaker 1: the one primary area of focus that we talked about
- 4:40Speaker 1: that we knew UTEP had a playmaker at the end.
- 4:45Speaker 1: We did a very very good job of containing him
- 4:50Speaker 1: and blocking our assignments where needed. And the offensive line
- 4:55Speaker 1: we have, I'm not gonna say we overlooked him, but
- 4:57Speaker 1: we have kind of glossed over throughout a lot of
- 4:59Speaker 1: the preseas and they did a very fair job. I'm
- 5:02Speaker 1: not going to say they blew it out of the waters,
- 5:04Speaker 1: and I think that's going to be the consensus with
- 5:07Speaker 1: a lot of our topics today. But they did a
- 5:09Speaker 1: good job of opening up holes and moving their front,
- 5:15Speaker 1: especially with our running backs.
- 5:16Speaker 4: So running backs had holes to run through very very frequently.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So shout out offensive line, great job. We're going to
- 5:24Speaker 4: see a lot better athletes next week, that's for sure.
- 5:27Speaker 4: But we did what we need to do against the
- 5:30Speaker 4: UTEP miners.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Now, did you did? Was any holding penalties?
- 5:36Speaker 2: There is a false start. I don't know if we
- 5:39Speaker 2: had any holding penalties.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I know we had we had a couple of false
- 5:43Speaker 1: starts that they again can get cleaned up. It needs
- 5:47Speaker 1: to get cleaned up.
- 5:48Speaker 3: You epect that at least one though. It's usually sloppy
- 5:51Speaker 3: week one, and it wasn't as bad as it could
- 5:53Speaker 3: have been.
- 5:54Speaker 4: It was.
- 5:55Speaker 3: It was a good all around performance by the offensive.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Lind Yeah, I think the sloppiness needs to be less.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I think real Rule seemed happy afterwards. I thought he
- 6:06Speaker 1: was pleased, but he definitely noticed and commented on things
- 6:11Speaker 1: that still need to be improved on.
- 6:13Speaker 4: And that's one thing. I mean, unforced penalties, especially like
- 6:17Speaker 4: fall starts or.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Bounds.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, little things like that like those need to get
- 6:23Speaker 1: cleaned up. Things that you're not really really trying to
- 6:25Speaker 1: make a play, they just happened.
- 6:26Speaker 3: So uh.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I do think that is one area get to clean
- 6:29Speaker 4: up there with the offense.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But no, I do agree that think Dalfin's line did
- 6:35Speaker 2: look very good because I mean that was really the
- 6:37Speaker 2: only area of the game that we were you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: Westmoreland was the guy that we were keeping our eye on,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and he really wasn't that big of a factor. I
- 6:45Speaker 2: was watching it with my in laws and I was like, yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 2: one of the guys on the D line is really good.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Like is that guy's like, no that guy no like
- 6:51Speaker 2: that guy. No, it's not like so like he was.
- 6:54Speaker 2: He wasn't hardly like even featured on TV. So I
- 6:58Speaker 2: mean that's a big sign.
- 7:00Speaker 3: How long has a bendince you've walked out a game
- 7:02Speaker 3: been like, Wow, we might actually have a well coached
- 7:03Speaker 3: team here. That was a good coach game.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's been a while in a while
- 7:13Speaker 1: that we felt good. I guess a couple other stats
- 7:16Speaker 1: that I thought were interesting. That thirty three point win
- 7:19Speaker 1: is the largest that we've had since we whooped up
- 7:21Speaker 1: on Northwestern in twenty twenty one, largest in an opener
- 7:27Speaker 1: since the twenty sixteen Fresno State game that we played,
- 7:30Speaker 1: so like it was it was a blowout win where
- 7:35Speaker 1: everybody got to play and we didn't have to really
- 7:39Speaker 1: panic about beating a smaller conference opponent where we definitely
- 7:47Speaker 1: have shown the struggle even last year against Louisiana Tech.
- 7:51Speaker 1: We've we've shown that in the past where we've had
- 7:53Speaker 1: to maybe grind out these games more than we'd hope.
- 7:56Speaker 4: So we did not do that.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So that, Yeah, I agree, it was well coach, well
- 8:00Speaker 1: put together overall, and it's good to good to be
- 8:03Speaker 1: one one, no.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I will say I was gonna say, uh, Scottie. On
- 8:11Speaker 2: the other like almost like he was starting to like
- 8:13Speaker 2: when he he was obviously trying to manufacture a little
- 8:16Speaker 2: energy for his team, and he came out just like
- 8:19Speaker 2: his hair on fire. And I was like, all right,
- 8:21Speaker 2: this guy's getting a little old, like we could probably
- 8:25Speaker 2: dial it back a little bit. Like I I was
- 8:27Speaker 2: glad we beat him, Like I was like, I'm not
- 8:29Speaker 2: rooting against UTEP, dude, you know we paid you to
- 8:31Speaker 2: come here. We're supposed to win. But it's like this
- 8:33Speaker 2: guy needs to chill out. And then they reminded me
- 8:36Speaker 2: that that like that cute too little where they had
- 8:39Speaker 2: all the receivers on one little side of the field
- 8:41Speaker 2: on the very first offense to play, like, oh my gosh,
- 8:44Speaker 2: come on, guys, what are we doing.
- 8:48Speaker 3: He reminded me a lot of PJ Flag on that sideline.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yes, exactly, that's exactly, Like.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I totally agree. That's what I was thinking too.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard that in comparison last week and I
- 9:01Speaker 1: heard a more maybe genuine PJ.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Fleck.
- 9:05Speaker 1: But then on the sidelines, I agree, like just watching
- 9:09Speaker 1: it from the stands and so where my seats are
- 9:11Speaker 1: at sidelines flipped.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Normally, I have.
- 9:13Speaker 1: A pretty good view of our sidelines and I can
- 9:16Speaker 1: make a lot of comments on it. It's flipped now, so
- 9:18Speaker 1: my eyes it's hard to even see where any of
- 9:21Speaker 1: our coaches or players are at on our new sideline.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So I'm watching the UTEB sideline very often. And I
- 9:27Speaker 1: will say early on, I was like, oh crap, like
- 9:31Speaker 1: they're here with a lot of energy.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And I mean it wasn't just Scotty, it was there
- 9:36Speaker 4: are coaches.
- 9:37Speaker 1: They were out on the numbers half the time, and
- 9:40Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my god, and we just looked dead
- 9:42Speaker 1: and I was like, are we going down this road again?
- 9:45Speaker 1: Like what is going on now? That didn't last very long.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Right before halftime they weren't doing it. And then the
- 9:53Speaker 1: second half the game was over and they knew it.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So it didn't last long. But I don't know whatever
- 9:59Speaker 1: you make of it, but they had energy definitely, And
- 10:02Speaker 1: I guess if you're a small team, like what else
- 10:04Speaker 1: do you do?
- 10:05Speaker 4: But it was nice to I guess shut that up.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yes, I totally understand it from their perspective, but you know,
- 10:12Speaker 2: it's like when they scored that quick touchdown and we
- 10:15Speaker 2: fumbled it, and they're like going nuts to like, okay, guys,
- 10:18Speaker 2: we needed to we need to just knit this one.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But like, let's let's be done with that.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I get off that fumbled. Yeah, they were jacked up
- 10:26Speaker 3: all the everything were out their run around like they
- 10:30Speaker 3: just won the championship. But I know, I kind of
- 10:33Speaker 3: I kind of liked that fire he was. It made
- 10:36Speaker 3: more fun to watch. All right.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Did you go to the game deck or you you
- 10:42Speaker 2: watched it on TV at the tail game?
- 10:44Speaker 3: You did? I finished it this morning.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yeah, that thought we were tied a halftime until this morning.
- 10:52Speaker 4: We didn't have to say that that you knew it
- 10:55Speaker 4: was coming up.
- 10:56Speaker 2: At the end of the first quarter. Tied at the
- 10:57Speaker 2: end of the first quarter.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I think take us where you want to go next.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Okay, I'll uh kind of a negative point. I guess
- 11:07Speaker 3: if you can find any of that game? Are you guys?
- 11:10Speaker 3: Are you guys worried about Ryola forcing the ball on
- 11:13Speaker 3: somebody's passes?
- 11:15Speaker 2: I actually didn't think he forced it. There's like there's
- 11:17Speaker 2: a couple of times, I mean, he did force it
- 11:18Speaker 2: a couple of times, but there are some times where
- 11:20Speaker 2: he was back in the pocket forever and threw it away,
- 11:23Speaker 2: So I don't I guess, I don't know. I'm not
- 11:24Speaker 2: worried about it, per se.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I feel like it wasn't if you're a lot, but.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Say, if you're going to force it, you're gonna try it,
- 11:33Speaker 2: You're gonna test it out on a lesser team, lower stakes.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I I like the comment back because I've heard that.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So it's funny. When the game goes as it's as
- 11:45Speaker 1: it should, people are now finding its very detailed, nitpicky things,
- 11:51Speaker 1: which I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It
- 11:53Speaker 1: makes for good conversation, right, And I've heard that too
- 11:56Speaker 1: that you know, there were a couple of balls that
- 11:59Speaker 1: were forced or thrown it tight windows.
- 12:01Speaker 4: A couple of them caught.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I think that right, Ryola is gonna do that, like
- 12:07Speaker 1: even against Colorado next week and moving forward. That was
- 12:11Speaker 1: one of my concerns that he might be a little
- 12:14Speaker 1: bit over aggressive by fitting balls and windows. But I
- 12:19Speaker 1: don't think that against like UTEP. It's hard to tell
- 12:22Speaker 1: if that is going to move forward because there wasn't
- 12:25Speaker 1: anything to me that stuck out against UTEP that I
- 12:28Speaker 1: was like, oh boy, like I wouldn't be throwing that
- 12:30Speaker 1: against Colorado.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I wouldn't be throwing that against a big ten team.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Utep was what it was, and I thought he did
- 12:37Speaker 1: a very very good job of game managing. And while
- 12:42Speaker 1: we're on Riola, there's probably a billion things. We could
- 12:44Speaker 1: go and have a whole podcast about him, and a
- 12:46Speaker 1: whole actual podcast show about Dylan Rayola in itself. He
- 12:55Speaker 1: did his part very well, and I was wrong in
- 13:00Speaker 1: saying that I thought Husker fans, including us and everybody else,
- 13:05Speaker 1: was gonna nitpick every little mistake, and no, he did.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Is he gained manage very very well, that's what we
- 13:14Speaker 1: wanted for this game, and made throws when he needed
- 13:17Speaker 1: to make throws. It just you never felt uncomfortable with
- 13:21Speaker 1: him back there, and he does not at all feel
- 13:24Speaker 1: like a freshman at all. And that's the most common
- 13:27Speaker 1: thing I've heard is we just don't feel like we
- 13:29Speaker 1: have a freshman back there. Other fun fact with him,
- 13:33Speaker 1: He's is a second true freshman quarterback to start an
- 13:37Speaker 1: opener since World War Two.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Name the other for Nebraska, yep, Adrian Martinez.
- 13:45Speaker 2: There you go.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Yeah, So it was it was very impressive, very composed.
- 13:51Speaker 1: That's the word I like to use after watching him.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Everything was handled well. And my maybe my favorite takeaway
- 13:58Speaker 1: from Ryola that just shows his character so far from
- 14:04Speaker 1: what we've seen is he was the first one off
- 14:06Speaker 1: of the bus in the Unity Walk to enter the
- 14:09Speaker 1: stadium and he's the first one coming out of the
- 14:12Speaker 1: tunnel walk. Not show moote, not reacting, not being an
- 14:18Speaker 1: all eyes on me, but just showing that this is
- 14:20Speaker 1: my team and I'm gonna lead him in the first
- 14:24Speaker 1: game to a win. And I think that speaks a
- 14:26Speaker 1: lot more than what people make it out to be.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So I will say, very very excited to see him continue.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I think that's not That's probably what everybody's gonna say.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I don't want to jump on the gun and say
- 14:42Speaker 1: he's the best ever. I might joke and call him
- 14:45Speaker 1: Patty Mahomes every once in a while, but he he
- 14:48Speaker 1: just he did a good job.
- 14:49Speaker 4: It was.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It was very impressive the way he handled that game
- 14:52Speaker 1: and handled his first game as a corn Husker, handled
- 14:55Speaker 1: the team, his manner is it is all of that.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It just it was very well done.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, he looked the part, the whole game, the.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Whole Speaking of Patting Mahomes, guys get chills on that
- 15:10Speaker 3: sidearm throw.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I mean he wanted to run it. I wanted to
- 15:15Speaker 2: tuck and run it, and then he yeah, he's slung
- 15:19Speaker 2: it with his arm.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Is that's the stuff that is going to get so
- 15:25Speaker 1: much attention. I'm not saying it shouldn't, but that really
- 15:29Speaker 1: isn't that important. I mean, its an impressive throw, right,
- 15:31Speaker 1: but it's not in the grand scheme of things. It
- 15:33Speaker 1: is what it is, you know, make the thrower of
- 15:35Speaker 1: me to make it. But like that's the stuff that
- 15:38Speaker 1: people are gonna watch, and he cannot get caught up
- 15:42Speaker 1: in all of that stuff in the hype in the media,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and he hasn't shown any signs of doing that.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But at this point, I mean, he's you know, you're
- 15:52Speaker 2: one year in. You're not one ye're in. But he's
- 15:55Speaker 2: been at a high level as far as hype since
- 15:57Speaker 2: he's been a freshman in high school. So you think
- 16:02Speaker 2: at this point you kind of has it figured out
- 16:04Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe that is. That's that's what's happening. On the
- 16:08Speaker 1: flip side.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Maybe he is.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I mean, as I guess, college hype has been told
- 16:14Speaker 1: by you know, family coaches, whoever that may be.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You know, you got to you gotta earn your.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Right too, say be cocky, but like, keep keep ahead
- 16:24Speaker 1: under you and work hard and get better, and then
- 16:28Speaker 1: you can earn the right to do somethingff. I mean,
- 16:30Speaker 1: I think of Steph Curry a lot with all of
- 16:32Speaker 1: this and some of his celebrations, and I was always
- 16:35Speaker 1: a little bit lebron same way in the NBA, like
- 16:38Speaker 1: a little bit like I just quit doing that crap.
- 16:40Speaker 4: But then to me, once you kind of earn your title, there.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Comes a point where you're like, all right, whatever, do it.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Yes, But obviously Ryol is nowhere close to that, and
- 16:51Speaker 1: he will not be there after a year one unless
- 16:53Speaker 1: we go twelve to zero and he wins the Heisman,
- 16:54Speaker 1: then maybe, but like he was not going to be there,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and I think he understands that.
- 16:59Speaker 4: There's no way to tell yet. But as far as
- 17:02Speaker 4: a game won in the maturity from a freshman quarterback
- 17:05Speaker 4: of what you wanted, it was there.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah, as I don't think anyone was upset with Roola yesterday.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I can't imagine any of the states like, ah.
- 17:18Speaker 3: You can you can tell he really loves the deep
- 17:23Speaker 3: all though, oh yeah, he.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Does love And I mean the thing I want to
- 17:27Speaker 2: talk about I think a good segue, Dak. It's so
- 17:32Speaker 2: nice when you have a freshman quarterback, when you have
- 17:34Speaker 2: just athletes. Nyor and Banks look like the real deal
- 17:38Speaker 2: on the outside. I mean, like they are so big
- 17:41Speaker 2: and fast like our wide receiving car. It felt pretty
- 17:46Speaker 2: good yesterday.
- 17:47Speaker 4: It did.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I mean the catch in the corner of the end
- 17:50Speaker 1: zone before halftime. I mean they are balancing himself on
- 17:54Speaker 1: that long throw earlier in the second quarter, Like we
- 17:57Speaker 1: haven't had those guys.
- 17:59Speaker 4: We didn't have him last year. And if we've had
- 18:01Speaker 4: them in the past, you.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Haven't had the quarterback to go with them. Get used
- 18:04Speaker 2: them line that had time to get them downfield.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yes, and one one post game take that I heard
- 18:12Speaker 1: that I really liked. I can't remember if it was
- 18:15Speaker 1: from Simple or Shaun Callahan, but they said, we're not
- 18:19Speaker 1: we don't look likeel Ohio State, like your Michigan's, like
- 18:22Speaker 1: your Penn States yet, but we're moving in the right direction,
- 18:27Speaker 1: like we start to see some of the bodies. I mean,
- 18:30Speaker 1: we can we'll get to the defense too. But like
- 18:32Speaker 1: these two receivers are six foot four and six foot
- 18:35Speaker 1: three and build like Division one Power five receivers. No
- 18:43Speaker 1: offense to Alex Bullock. But that's what we were dealing
- 18:46Speaker 1: with last year, so we are starting to look the part.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Dylan Rohulla looks like a Division one quarterback. Our running
- 18:56Speaker 1: backs are starting to build their They don't look like
- 18:58Speaker 1: Emma Johnson doesn't look strong anymore. Ramier doesn't look scrawny.
- 19:02Speaker 1: They look like solid power five running back. So we're
- 19:05Speaker 1: starting to Thomas Fdoni.
- 19:07Speaker 2: We look.
- 19:08Speaker 1: We'll get to him, but he's he is a He
- 19:10Speaker 1: is a professional, built looking tight end. So we're starting
- 19:14Speaker 1: to look the part. Now, the play and the performance
- 19:17Speaker 1: has to follow. But I think from an athlete standpoint,
- 19:21Speaker 1: like you said, Austin, our receivers, that was a question mark.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And yes it's still UTEP. We'll keep saying that over
- 19:26Speaker 1: and over. It's still just UTEP. But they looked better
- 19:30Speaker 1: than UTEP's secondary.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Yes, they looked way better than UTEP secondary.
- 19:38Speaker 3: And Nayor looks like a he looks like a pro
- 19:41Speaker 3: wide receiver. He's built like one.
- 19:43Speaker 2: He looks really good. He looked really good, and it's
- 19:46Speaker 2: nice having a guy that can throw it downfield in
- 19:48Speaker 2: an offensive line that could keep him open and keep
- 19:50Speaker 2: the back hill open long enough for them to throw
- 19:52Speaker 2: it down there for them to try and catch it. Yeah,
- 19:55Speaker 2: and they weren't always, but like who is it was
- 19:57Speaker 2: a neighbor that missed that first deep ball and I
- 20:00Speaker 2: hit him right on the hands.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Yeah, like even the missus, it's like, okay, like it's there,
- 20:09Speaker 2: it's not. This isn't gonna be. This isn't gonna be
- 20:13Speaker 2: the last year's receiving corp. I felt good, yes.
- 20:17Speaker 1: And we can jump talking about Fiddoni and the tight
- 20:21Speaker 1: end that was I would call a negative. But one
- 20:24Speaker 1: thing that I wish we could have saw more of,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and I thought we were gonna see more of. I
- 20:28Speaker 1: took a bet on Fidoni's score touchdown, took us overs
- 20:31Speaker 1: and receiving yards. Obviously Post didn't hit. It just didn't
- 20:34Speaker 1: seem like we could ever get him going. I'm not
- 20:39Speaker 1: gonna say it's concerning, but I do think it's gonna
- 20:41Speaker 1: need to get utilized moving forward.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Now.
- 20:44Speaker 1: It's good to show what we also have at receiver
- 20:47Speaker 1: so that we're not over reliant on the tight end
- 20:50Speaker 1: like you know your Iowas in Wisconsin's have been of
- 20:53Speaker 1: the past. But I think that for us to have
- 20:55Speaker 1: a really solid above average offense. Moving forward, we're gonna
- 21:00Speaker 1: need to get the Titans involved more, and I think
- 21:02Speaker 1: there's potential there.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Like I don't.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I'm not writing off Fidoni and Borkorshire after week one
- 21:09Speaker 1: because they didn't really get involved, but I wanted to see.
- 21:13Speaker 4: More of that.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Carter Nelson was involved.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Hey, it made that one guy miss after after Oh boy,
- 21:22Speaker 1: you can tell he's going to be fun to watch
- 21:24Speaker 1: in the future.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Already is.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But yeah, no, I agree. I don't know if that's
- 21:30Speaker 2: more of a product of, Hey, we want to test
- 21:33Speaker 2: out these new wrinkles in our offense. We know what
- 21:35Speaker 2: we have from last year with Padoni and he's kind
- 21:37Speaker 2: of you know, he's had injury history, so we don't
- 21:39Speaker 2: want to get him hurt early in the year. Or
- 21:42Speaker 2: if it was just Fidoni had a better I don't
- 21:45Speaker 2: know relationship with Harvard last year and he doesn't have
- 21:48Speaker 2: that same relationship. Thriller, but I would expect this to
- 21:52Speaker 2: see Fidoni more. I mean, Rule loves that guy.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you they didn't really use him that much in
- 22:03Speaker 3: the passing game yesterday, but you'd think down the road
- 22:06Speaker 3: they'll run him out there more. With how big and
- 22:08Speaker 3: fast he looks doubles, slip screens to the tight end
- 22:12Speaker 3: a lot more. The next couple of games, he'll.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Be further downfield. He like mckets he had, he was
- 22:18Speaker 2: not downfield at all. You know, it was two yards.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Last year. I felt like he was constantly downfield. I
- 22:24Speaker 2: don't know if that was just because we didn't have receivers.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So we're like, are gonna run this guy out across
- 22:29Speaker 2: the middle for fifteen twenty yards?
- 22:31Speaker 3: But he's the one you could draws last year.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, It just it's funny you're reading some of
- 22:36Speaker 1: the stats that from this game and then like, for example,
- 22:41Speaker 1: Mayer had a one hundred and seven yards five pass
- 22:44Speaker 1: one hundred and seven yards. That's our first one hundred
- 22:46Speaker 1: yard receiver since Trey Palmer's day at Iowa and twenty
- 22:50Speaker 1: twenty two. So we had no one hundred oard receivers
- 22:53Speaker 1: last year, which put reading off the stats last year.
- 22:57Speaker 2: I don't think we had over two hundred passing yards
- 22:59Speaker 2: in the game last year.
- 23:01Speaker 1: That's another one total since Purdue in twenty twenty two.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Our season high last year was one hundred and ninety
- 23:12Speaker 1: nine yards against Michigan.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yeah. I also saw up our punt return yards. We
- 23:19Speaker 2: had twenty five punt return yards and last year we
- 23:21Speaker 2: had seventy five total for the whole season.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Yep.
- 23:24Speaker 1: So I mean, let's segue into that talk about special
- 23:27Speaker 1: teams here a little bit from from a returning standpoint.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Yeah, like DA's boy, I GC.
- 23:35Speaker 1: He wanted to return the ball, and he tried and
- 23:38Speaker 1: he did, which which I thought was echoing what Rule said.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I think he's a veteran guy that we trust to
- 23:49Speaker 1: one catch the ball and then to try to make
- 23:52Speaker 1: a play with it. I will say this. We got
- 23:55Speaker 1: a glimpse of Jacry Barney a couple of times early on.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I was like, WHOA like this dude. He is fast
- 24:04Speaker 1: and he is shifty. I think we'll see him back
- 24:08Speaker 1: there potentially, I mean, barring maybe injuries or I mean
- 24:12Speaker 1: just in the future. He's he's built to be a
- 24:15Speaker 1: returner guy. It reminds me a lot of just looking
- 24:18Speaker 1: at him, and this is probably a ceiling for him.
- 24:20Speaker 1: But like a Darren Sproles type of player, like I
- 24:26Speaker 1: just I see I see a little bit of that
- 24:27Speaker 1: in him as a returner. So uh, anyway, shout out there,
- 24:33Speaker 1: but we're got returning the ball is good.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I thought, Yeah, I think it's nice. I think I
- 24:40Speaker 2: c is, this is the only time he's gonna be
- 24:41Speaker 2: on the field, so I think he knows that he's
- 24:44Speaker 2: not really gonna be involved that much in the passing game,
- 24:47Speaker 2: so he's gonna take us opportunities. And I'm glad rules
- 24:50Speaker 2: letting him do it, because there are some coaches who
- 24:52Speaker 2: are like, hey, we just don't want the risk, and.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Who wants to play football? That's what he said. We will.
- 25:00Speaker 4: We're gonna play football again.
- 25:02Speaker 2: We're against UTEP, so again, risks are relatively low, but
- 25:06Speaker 2: it's good to see.
- 25:07Speaker 3: I mean, he loves he loved the kick return your
- 25:10Speaker 3: ards he lost you should Yeah, the third facet, I mean,
- 25:17Speaker 3: you have you have no chance of returning a kick
- 25:20Speaker 3: if you fair catch you every time we kneel.
- 25:22Speaker 2: It exactly.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Bus special teams field goals. Yeah, there we go. That
- 25:31Speaker 1: I just wrote. I wrote kicking question mark like.
- 25:36Speaker 2: We didn't have to.
- 25:37Speaker 4: We didn't have to.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Kicked it out of bounce on a kickoff.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Not great, that was an ideal, but I mean we
- 25:45Speaker 1: made the the basically an extra point field goal in
- 25:50Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, which was good. We still don't know
- 25:53Speaker 1: what to expect. That wasn't a game to really measure.
- 25:56Speaker 1: We made our extra points. Good job, that was good.
- 25:59Speaker 1: We haven't and that in the past always they didn't
- 26:01Speaker 1: get blocked. That's also good.
- 26:04Speaker 2: The punting was acceptable, nothing really punned like for basically
- 26:13Speaker 2: one hundred yards.
- 26:15Speaker 4: One was pretty good. I thought, I remember the first one.
- 26:18Speaker 4: I believe it was a pretty was pretty good.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Overall, again, it's not a whole lot to talk about
- 26:24Speaker 1: there because there wasn't much special teams wise, which usually
- 26:27Speaker 1: is a good thing.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Wasn't bad.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we forgot one like, very big position on offense
- 26:34Speaker 1: and storyline, So I want to go back to offense
- 26:38Speaker 1: before moving on the defense.
- 26:41Speaker 4: We played all four of them, guys, we did, and
- 26:45Speaker 4: at all.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Who were surprised that doubt up. No, it wasn't down
- 26:48Speaker 2: Ramire Johnson took the first snap.
- 26:50Speaker 1: No, that was part of our tailgate pod, and I
- 26:54Speaker 1: think Kendall hit that on the head. I think Kendall
- 26:56Speaker 1: said Ramire, I guess, you guess, Gabe, I guess, and.
- 27:02Speaker 3: That not down Dale the other one.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Yeah, here's maybe the best thing that I think happened.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But it also makes it for interesting an interesting topic
- 27:13Speaker 1: moving forward. Daldell fumble us gets benched as we thought,
- 27:20Speaker 1: we thought that would happen. And that's that's where the
- 27:25Speaker 1: interesting topic comes in. Is I am very very very
- 27:30Speaker 1: very happy and glad and I'm that that happened. Like
- 27:35Speaker 1: I'm glad. It's a statement because again, with these four
- 27:38Speaker 1: running backs that are supposedly all very very similar, we
- 27:43Speaker 1: can't be putting it on the on the turf, especially
- 27:45Speaker 1: when we're inside our ten yard line. That can't happen.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Now against UTEP, you get away with it. It overshadows.
- 27:51Speaker 1: We get a safety actually out of it. But I
- 27:56Speaker 1: agree Dowdell, I thought out of the four probably looked
- 28:00Speaker 1: the best.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Now that's not like they didn't all get a bunch
- 28:03Speaker 4: of carries.
- 28:04Speaker 2: But he averaged seven yards to carry with as long
- 28:07Speaker 2: as being a twelve yarder, So I mean it was
- 28:09Speaker 2: it wasn't like he had one big yard that one
- 28:12Speaker 2: big carry that bumped it up to seven. It was like, oh,
- 28:14Speaker 2: this dude's like turn it up chunks.
- 28:17Speaker 3: They thought like a cannon out of there too when
- 28:18Speaker 3: he gets the ball.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And I'll say, this is my thought, that's as good
- 28:22Speaker 1: as that is.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 28:24Speaker 1: You have to not fumble the ball oh, I agree,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and that's why I'm glad that we stuck with it.
- 28:31Speaker 1: I think I heard someone say should Nowdelle should get
- 28:34Speaker 1: the first carry next week.
- 28:35Speaker 4: I because he looked the best. I don't.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I don't think so, like we have to. That has
- 28:40Speaker 1: to be stressed, that has to be enforced, no matter
- 28:42Speaker 1: how good you're doing. And and I think that's more
- 28:45Speaker 1: important than having a couple of explosive runs that you know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: turned two into four. Because I think these other guys
- 28:52Speaker 1: can do it too. I thought Emma Johnson, I thought
- 28:56Speaker 1: he looked really, really good. I thought he is the
- 28:58Speaker 1: one that had the longer breakaway run. Ramier had some
- 29:02Speaker 1: solid r on scaate Urban got in for a couple
- 29:04Speaker 1: of touchdowns.
- 29:04Speaker 4: So like.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Everybody performed well, I would say from a running back standpoint,
- 29:15Speaker 1: I think it's discontinue to evaluate and Colorado, we're going
- 29:19Speaker 1: to see the guys that don't fumble with I think
- 29:24Speaker 1: we want to see Daldll to some extent, but don't
- 29:28Speaker 1: do it.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Don't.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I think that that that's a little frustrated. He can't
- 29:30Speaker 1: do it, cannot fumble the ball. And I'm glad that
- 29:33Speaker 1: it was handled the way it did. I think that
- 29:35Speaker 1: was very well done by the coaching staff. No matter
- 29:38Speaker 1: how well he was looking, it can't be at a
- 29:40Speaker 1: sacrifice for footing the ball in the turf.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I will say it helps when so, I mean, if
- 29:45Speaker 2: you take out Evan Johnson's forty two yard run, the
- 29:48Speaker 2: other three average like four and a half yards of carry.
- 29:50Speaker 2: So it's not like I obviously Dwadell at seven yards
- 29:54Speaker 2: to carry, but it wasn't like if you take him out,
- 29:57Speaker 2: you're going to be switching for like a three yard
- 30:00Speaker 2: carry kind of guy. It's like, all right, I got
- 30:01Speaker 2: four dudes who can put five yards per carry out there.
- 30:06Speaker 2: But he did look by part of the best. But
- 30:10Speaker 2: I was like, this dude's not coming back out like yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 2: you can't in the five yard line after rules been
- 30:16Speaker 2: like give you a fumble. If you don't take care
- 30:17Speaker 2: of the ball, you're not playing things like this. Dude's done.
- 30:24Speaker 1: I've always spent almost all of our time on the offense,
- 30:27Speaker 1: which I think is fine. That's where our points were.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Our defense held. You tip the seven points the they
- 30:36Speaker 1: only had a two hundred and five yards that's our
- 30:39Speaker 1: eighth consecutive opponent to gain less than four hundred yards.
- 30:43Speaker 1: The last time we've done that was guess when with
- 30:48Speaker 1: DOMINICANSU and that defense. So defense played well. They they
- 30:52Speaker 1: played better and held UTEP. It's a lot less than
- 30:56Speaker 1: I thought was gonna happen. I thought that UTIP would
- 30:59Speaker 1: have a couple of breakaway plays.
- 31:02Speaker 4: They had one.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I thought they maybe would get loose on a couple
- 31:06Speaker 1: of runs. But our defense did a very very fine
- 31:09Speaker 1: job against a team that they did what they need
- 31:13Speaker 1: they should have done. So shout out there, I thought,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I mean from a position. We got two interceptions, so
- 31:19Speaker 1: we did force a couple of turnovers.
- 31:21Speaker 4: I will say it is what it is. I guess,
- 31:25Speaker 4: like one pass.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Was thrown right right to Buford but with a heart
- 31:31Speaker 1: Zoga got it, which was heart Zaga got it. So
- 31:34Speaker 1: I was like, it is but but it is what
- 31:35Speaker 1: it is and then shout out to the dance after
- 31:38Speaker 1: the interception. I don't know if that was on TV
- 31:41Speaker 1: or not, but the whole sideline went nuts after we
- 31:44Speaker 1: got those interceptions, and I think that's me. I think
- 31:46Speaker 1: it's great to celebrate something when things are going well.
- 31:50Speaker 1: You don't do that ship when you're down, though, like
- 31:54Speaker 1: or if you're Yeah, I think that. I think that
- 31:56Speaker 1: stuff's okay if you have a focus and an emphasis
- 31:59Speaker 1: on something like that, and it needs celebrated because we've
- 32:02Speaker 1: been so bad at it, and we have it's been horrible.
- 32:05Speaker 1: So let's let's do Let's continue.
- 32:09Speaker 4: To force turnovers. Won the turnover battle.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I think that's a big focus, and Mike Rules said it.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I think in its post game winning each game by
- 32:18Speaker 1: We're not gonna go plus six in one game. Let's
- 32:20Speaker 1: win each game by plus one or plus two. That's
- 32:22Speaker 1: how we're going to get to our total at the
- 32:24Speaker 1: end of the year. So that's what I had on
- 32:27Speaker 1: our defense. Again, very good job, did what they should do,
- 32:30Speaker 1: and it was good to see us to hold the
- 32:32Speaker 1: team to under ten points again minimally yardage, not many sacks,
- 32:37Speaker 1: but I'm not looking too much into that after one game.
- 32:44Speaker 3: How about that? How about that? Do what you got
- 32:46Speaker 3: in D line jacks? You guys up nasty Todd m.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Hm, Yes, they're pretty good. I was, honestly, I'm of
- 33:00Speaker 2: surprise that Utech wasn't able to have more success on
- 33:02Speaker 2: offense after that one quick drive. I was like, if
- 33:05Speaker 2: they're going to be this game, I could see this
- 33:06Speaker 2: being in like an actual like issue, because I mean
- 33:09Speaker 2: that drive was like boom boom boom, boom boom, but
- 33:12Speaker 2: then they were never to weren't able to really do
- 33:15Speaker 2: that again, which I don't know if that's because we
- 33:17Speaker 2: adjusted and we're like, oh, hey, they're going to play
- 33:19Speaker 2: this fast, We're going to play this fast, or if
- 33:21Speaker 2: it was just they kind of got lucky on a
- 33:23Speaker 2: couple of plays and it worked out. But defense looked
- 33:26Speaker 2: really good that I was surprised. There's, like, there are
- 33:28Speaker 2: names I didn't expect to be, you know, heard as much,
- 33:34Speaker 2: like you didn't really hear much from Gifford or like
- 33:38Speaker 2: Shaun Singleton, like Gayboar was our leading tackler type of
- 33:45Speaker 2: leading tackle, and like Vincent Shavers was up there too,
- 33:49Speaker 2: like names. I did not anticipate sceneing up there with
- 33:54Speaker 2: that much snaps.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and this was my last point here. A lot
- 34:00Speaker 1: of guys played. Yeah, and I'm saying this from a
- 34:05Speaker 1: selfish standpoint.
- 34:09Speaker 4: We pulled our guys too early because I wanted to
- 34:13Speaker 4: get the overs.
- 34:16Speaker 1: I think we pulled I think I think I all
- 34:17Speaker 1: had one drive in the second half before Harvard came
- 34:21Speaker 1: in at quarterback and we sun O Kaylin.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I got in.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I completely I'm not upset, I am because I lost
- 34:32Speaker 1: money on it, But I completely understand pulling that the
- 34:37Speaker 1: game was over like UTEP was just after all their energy.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It was like they had a shot of five hour
- 34:42Speaker 1: energy at the beginning of the game and then just
- 34:44Speaker 1: hit a wall.
- 34:46Speaker 2: And their offense was not on the field long enough
- 34:49Speaker 2: and their defense was just just hammered. I mean there
- 34:53Speaker 2: was literally a ten minute drive at one point in
- 34:56Speaker 2: the game.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Like it the game was over.
- 34:59Speaker 1: So again, from subbing standpoint, why not get these other
- 35:02Speaker 1: guys to play.
- 35:03Speaker 4: They deserve to play.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Parents are probably there.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Get some experience with them too, like see see what
- 35:08Speaker 1: the field's all about, because we know at certain positions
- 35:12Speaker 1: we're not super deep. So yeah, guy like Vincent Shaver's
- 35:15Speaker 1: like that's those are really good minutes for him to
- 35:17Speaker 1: get in and.
- 35:18Speaker 4: Lead that defense.
- 35:20Speaker 1: And so I was they get happy that that we
- 35:24Speaker 1: did what we did. We don't We didn't need Ryola
- 35:26Speaker 1: to go in and throw for another one hundred and
- 35:28Speaker 1: fifty yards just to run the stats up. Like that's
- 35:31Speaker 1: not what I don't think this team emphasizes and should
- 35:35Speaker 1: be emphasizing. I think with a different coaching staff and
- 35:38Speaker 1: a different philosophy that maybe would have been something that
- 35:41Speaker 1: would have happened was, hey, let's rack the stats up
- 35:43Speaker 1: and let's win this game sixty five to seven.
- 35:46Speaker 4: That's not what these guys.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Believe in and that that to me is a very
- 35:49Speaker 1: very good sign, like that shows we know what's important,
- 35:53Speaker 1: we know this game of what it is and took
- 35:55Speaker 1: care of business. Also utep, I didn't realize this until
- 36:00Speaker 1: I heard it at the game. We went to a
- 36:02Speaker 1: satellite camp with them this year with their coach coaching staff,
- 36:05Speaker 1: so like a lot of mutual respect from both staffs,
- 36:09Speaker 1: both players, so there wasn't any extracurricular pushing and shoving either.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Like it was just a very clean finish to the game.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Even though the enders came in for the total points.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Yep, we all thought we were gonna were None of
- 36:26Speaker 2: us took we're gonna take the spread, I believe, and
- 36:29Speaker 2: all of us were gonna take the overs, and neither
- 36:31Speaker 2: one of those hit.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Well that if you cap side the ball. Though, at
- 36:37Speaker 3: least they come out of this game. They figured out
- 36:38Speaker 3: one thing. Their QUB battle is definitely over. Yeah, that
- 36:43Speaker 3: guy why they pulled them five or five looking good
- 36:46Speaker 3: I have no idea is backups looked terrible so that
- 36:49Speaker 3: there could be battles over.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I didn't can he threw one interception like all right,
- 36:53Speaker 2: this QB battle, just heat it up and the okay,
- 36:57Speaker 2: maybe Skyler locklayers.
- 36:58Speaker 1: So yeah, we knew we were going to see both
- 37:04Speaker 1: so and we did. I would definitely.
- 37:09Speaker 3: The field the rest of the year.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yes, one last thing before we go. Here we go,
- 37:19Speaker 1: share the screens. Everybody can see the recap. There we are.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Wow. Week one picks for DAK started off with a
- 37:34Speaker 1: push on Thursday.
- 37:36Speaker 3: I thought, you've got about this.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Okay, finished four seven and one.
- 37:39Speaker 1: You did hit your lock so great job there, eight
- 37:43Speaker 1: and seven to one on the year. And then here
- 37:48Speaker 1: we are all we all survived the good job. We
- 37:54Speaker 1: are onto week or two, Dak. Any last minute comments
- 37:58Speaker 1: on your.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Picks about that log? I know, I know an't saying
- 38:01Speaker 3: now because I want that. That was when the logs
- 38:03Speaker 3: I actually is probably most confident. And I've been in
- 38:05Speaker 3: a while. Florida is awful and I and I think
- 38:08Speaker 3: Miami is actually pretty good. But Florida sucks. Bill the
- 38:12Speaker 3: neighbors getta be gone. So I was really confident in
- 38:15Speaker 3: that lock. Other than that I lost. I lost Nebraska.
- 38:19Speaker 1: What what?
- 38:20Speaker 3: What did I get that at on there? I lost
- 38:22Speaker 3: that spread by like a half point and a half.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Michigan lost by half point.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Talk us off this pod.
- 38:27Speaker 3: That, hey, well, well I covered that Actron game.
- 38:35Speaker 4: I don't think so.
