- 0:18so I will find a way.
- 0:19It took a minute,
- 0:20now it didn't happen right away.
- 0:21When they get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:23you decide to stay.
- 0:24That's how a winner's made.
- 0:25Stick a fork in the head of a McKinney.
- 0:30what is going on everybody
- 0:31welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:33media podcast it's our
- 0:35interview series and we are
- 0:36here with the one and only
- 0:38Rebecca Fuseli um how's it
- 0:40going Rebecca it's going
- 0:42well it is always a treat
- 0:45to get to talk to you um we
- 0:47met a couple years ago
- 0:49right before the mag and um
- 0:53we've been friends ever
- 0:54since and it's been awesome
- 0:56yeah definitely kind of
- 0:57grown together you know
- 0:59Yeah.
- 0:59Yeah.
- 0:59I was looking at like some
- 1:02of your numbers.
- 1:02These are later in my notes,
- 1:03but I'm going to talk about it now.
- 1:04When we first got with you
- 1:06or interviewed you,
- 1:09I was doing a semifinal
- 1:10series and I always look to
- 1:11see like how many followers
- 1:12the person had.
- 1:13And if they,
- 1:14if they shared any of the content,
- 1:16how much would that help us?
- 1:18And,
- 1:19and you had about 5,000 followers back
- 1:21then.
- 1:22Yeah.
- 1:23You are now at, I think,
- 1:25300 and something insane.
- 1:2920-something right now.
- 1:31Yeah, just over the past year.
- 1:33I mean, it's been a steady climb,
- 1:35but every now and then you
- 1:36get a little blow up.
- 1:38Yeah.
- 1:38Like and you're you're
- 1:40killing the Internet like
- 1:41you are amazing at it and
- 1:44you're getting better and
- 1:45better as I as I've gotten
- 1:48to know you over the last
- 1:49couple of years.
- 1:50Some of the first stuff you
- 1:51put out back when we first
- 1:52met was really funny, really raw.
- 1:55And now you're getting so good at it.
- 1:57You're playing multiple characters.
- 2:00You're and it's all over the map.
- 2:02You have you have like education.
- 2:05You have funny.
- 2:06You have a podcast now.
- 2:08You like you're doing it all.
- 2:12What is your favorite aspect of it?
- 2:16Probably, I mean, above all of it,
- 2:19the comedy skits are always
- 2:20fun just because that's
- 2:22like my creative side that comes out.
- 2:24When I first started growing
- 2:26my Instagram page,
- 2:28I always wanted it to be a
- 2:30good balance of
- 2:32entertainment because
- 2:33that's what social media is
- 2:34and I have fun on that side.
- 2:37People gaining something
- 2:39from watching me train and
- 2:40also gaining something from education,
- 2:44coaching,
- 2:44because that is also a big
- 2:46passion of mine.
- 2:47So I always wanted it to be balanced.
- 2:49But lately I've been
- 2:50branching more into
- 2:51entertainment and comedy.
- 2:54but still trying to sneak in
- 2:57some educational,
- 2:58like this is what I'm still
- 2:59doing in training because
- 3:00people love to see that too.
- 3:03But seeing the comedy skits
- 3:05come together when an idea
- 3:06pops in my head is funny.
- 3:08It entertains me.
- 3:09Maybe I'm just over here
- 3:10entertaining myself.
- 3:11Well, it's working.
- 3:14HarleyMom223 says, hello, Rebecca.
- 3:16You are awesome.
- 3:17Hey, thank you.
- 3:19You're awesome too.
- 3:20And Corey Leonard says,
- 3:21we call it edu-comedy.
- 3:23Oh, I love that.
- 3:24There we go.
- 3:28So, so when you,
- 3:30when the idea pops in your head and then,
- 3:34then you have to like plan it out,
- 3:36like how you're going to
- 3:37film it to get the vision into reality.
- 3:44How much better are you at that today?
- 3:46And how long does that generally take?
- 3:49Okay, so surprisingly,
- 3:51just being that I do
- 3:52everything with just my phone,
- 3:54like I shoot all those
- 3:55shots with just my phone,
- 3:56I can shoot them pretty fast.
- 3:58I think the eye that I have
- 4:01for like the different
- 4:02angles and putting some of
- 4:03the skits together is
- 4:05similar to how some people
- 4:07are really good at writing.
- 4:08or really good at building
- 4:10stuff with their hands or
- 4:12sculpting or I even talk
- 4:13about like my little sister
- 4:15is such a good um artist in
- 4:17every sense like painting
- 4:19and drawing and um she has
- 4:21an eye for that I think I
- 4:23kind of have my creative
- 4:24side has an eye for uh
- 4:27creating these videos and
- 4:28skits and I think that's
- 4:31where my weird faces come
- 4:32from too I'm like just a little bit um
- 4:35busting out those little
- 4:38weird things that we see on
- 4:39a daily basis.
- 4:40And then it's also like a
- 4:42little bit of a challenge
- 4:43of a skill to try to portray that.
- 4:44So I don't know,
- 4:46I think I thought back to a
- 4:48while that I've been
- 4:49editing videos for a while.
- 4:51It's just now this comedy
- 4:52side and creative side has
- 4:53come out over the last couple years.
- 4:55So
- 4:57And you've I know that you
- 4:59for you might still be
- 5:00doing it painting shoes.
- 5:02You have art in in your mind anyway.
- 5:05Right.
- 5:05Like so visual arts.
- 5:09So now that you've added
- 5:10multiple characters,
- 5:12do you do you have to like
- 5:15have spots on the floor
- 5:16that you stand to make sure
- 5:17that like all of the Rebecca's fit?
- 5:19Yes, that is a big part of it.
- 5:22And basically,
- 5:24I just you would act out a scene,
- 5:26just how you would see it in your brain.
- 5:28So if coach is standing on
- 5:30this side of the gym,
- 5:31that other side of the gym,
- 5:33and I don't know if other
- 5:34people can tell.
- 5:35But if I don't get that the
- 5:36way my picky brain wants to see it,
- 5:39I don't like it.
- 5:39It doesn't make sense to me.
- 5:41So
- 5:42There are some challenges in that,
- 5:43but I think where the reels
- 5:46and the skits that I do
- 5:48really hit hard is that
- 5:51sorry to everyone at CrossFit Bolt.
- 5:53They're all based off of you guys.
- 5:55Everything that we do here.
- 5:57So you probably some some
- 6:01people have taken on the
- 6:02liberty of guessing who
- 6:04this reels was made off of.
- 6:06So it's a game now.
- 6:10Um,
- 6:10has anybody sit at like complained
- 6:13about it or do they just
- 6:14laugh at themselves?
- 6:15No, they just laugh.
- 6:16We all, we're all one big family here.
- 6:18They laugh or they, everybody including,
- 6:21or sometimes a lot of times
- 6:23they're built off of like myself too.
- 6:24And we all just laugh,
- 6:26laugh together or it's a fun way.
- 6:28I think some of my old reels
- 6:30used to be like with the
- 6:32gym and making fun of, uh,
- 6:35Just messy equipment or
- 6:37something like that.
- 6:37Having a more creative way
- 6:39to get our point across
- 6:40without just being like,
- 6:41pick up your equipment.
- 6:42You know,
- 6:42I think it kind of started that way.
- 6:44And now it's just the
- 6:45silliness that goes on in everyday life.
- 6:47So just relatable things for
- 6:49everyone that everyone can laugh at.
- 6:53Yeah, that's awesome.
- 6:55We had a meme guy in my old
- 6:58gym and every meme was
- 7:01something from the gym, right?
- 7:03Like a coach,
- 7:04like you can pick which coach
- 7:05he was making fun of or
- 7:07which athlete or whatever.
- 7:09And it actually became
- 7:11really an awesome
- 7:13experience to kind of be a
- 7:14part of as he grew in
- 7:16popularity that you knew
- 7:19who he was talking about.
- 7:20Well, there's a tactful way to do it,
- 7:23right?
- 7:24You're not,
- 7:24we're not just going out and
- 7:26making fun of people and there's a,
- 7:28there's a classy, funny way to do it.
- 7:30And then there's ways that
- 7:31it can come across in the wrong way.
- 7:32But, um,
- 7:34luckily everybody kind of
- 7:35understands me and my,
- 7:36my sense of humor and we
- 7:37can all get a good laugh from it.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40So cool.
- 7:42Um,
- 7:44So I am trying to mute my
- 7:45mic and I'm trying to do some things,
- 7:48but I was in Michigan this
- 7:49last weekend covering my
- 7:52co-host doing quarterfinals
- 7:54and my setup is all messed up.
- 7:58We're making it work.
- 7:59Yeah.
- 7:59I had like multiple mics
- 8:00plugged into the soundboard
- 8:01and now they're all on.
- 8:02I don't know which one's mine.
- 8:04All right.
- 8:05We sound good on my end.
- 8:07Cool.
- 8:07Well, so there it is.
- 8:09Anyway, so you're also a podcaster now.
- 8:14We talked about that last
- 8:15time you were on the show.
- 8:16You started doing this podcast.
- 8:20You were just in the
- 8:20beginnings last time you were on.
- 8:23Now you've been doing it for about a year.
- 8:24Mm hmm.
- 8:26So how do you like doing podcasting?
- 8:30Is there any pressure coming
- 8:32up with topics every week?
- 8:34As someone who does weekly shows,
- 8:37sometimes that can be tough.
- 8:38And then sometimes CrossFit
- 8:39just makes it super easy for you.
- 8:41Yeah, especially while you're in season,
- 8:44right?
- 8:44You have things to talk
- 8:45about and everything.
- 8:46And when you're out of season,
- 8:47it gets a little bit more challenging.
- 8:48Um, I think, well,
- 8:50we're trying to get on on
- 8:51y'all y'all's level, Scott,
- 8:53because we're doing really
- 8:54good for a while of getting
- 8:56one out every week.
- 8:57Like last week,
- 8:59quarterfinals kept me from
- 9:00shooting another one,
- 9:01I need to get like episodes ahead.
- 9:02So I have time to edit them
- 9:03and everything.
- 9:05But our podcast,
- 9:06and I've always wanted it to be this way,
- 9:08is not so much a news podcast.
- 9:12It's more of just Matt and I
- 9:14sit down and talk about topics,
- 9:16what's going on in our life,
- 9:18and then the broader
- 9:19picture of CrossFit and how
- 9:21that all ties together.
- 9:22And then just random
- 9:24questions from folks and fans just to...
- 9:27make it more of a
- 9:28conversation and honestly I
- 9:31i don't feel much pressure
- 9:33when it comes to podcast
- 9:35topics and everything
- 9:36because matt and I will
- 9:37talk about anything fitness
- 9:39related or maybe it's like
- 9:40not even close to fitness
- 9:41just the most random things
- 9:43and I think it's something
- 9:44we really enjoy doing
- 9:46together because we'll get
- 9:47on the weirdest subjects um
- 9:50and it's just a conversation between us
- 9:53But I will say on the
- 9:55podcast that I didn't have
- 9:56like some bullet points and
- 9:58some things prepared.
- 9:59They went all over the place
- 10:03crazy wild and I didn't
- 10:04like them as much.
- 10:05So there's an element of
- 10:07organization with a little
- 10:09bit of spontaneity.
- 10:10I'm still trying to figure out that.
- 10:13So Holly, love the podcast.
- 10:16Holly is our statistician.
- 10:18If you see any stats coming
- 10:19out on our Instagram page, all her.
- 10:22Awesome.
- 10:23Oh, I love it.
- 10:24I love it.
- 10:24You guys are always posting awesome stuff.
- 10:26She's amazing.
- 10:28She does all the
- 10:28leaderboards at every
- 10:29competition so we can show
- 10:32who's won an event or
- 10:34whatever you were going to
- 10:35say it looked like.
- 10:36Oh,
- 10:37I I'm sure you feel the same way when
- 10:39when you have people and I
- 10:41had I was really thankful
- 10:42at Wadapalooza when people
- 10:44would come up and say, hey,
- 10:45we listen to the podcast and we love it.
- 10:47That's like a whole nother
- 10:49level of appreciating like the content,
- 10:52because I feel like.
- 10:53the people that listen to
- 10:54your podcast are your friends, right?
- 10:56Because they're in on the
- 10:57conversation with you.
- 10:58So that when I have folks that say, hey,
- 11:00we listen to the podcast
- 11:01and we laugh and enjoy it,
- 11:03that means that's probably
- 11:06a little bit above just like, hey,
- 11:08your reels are funny and everything.
- 11:10It's like a whole other
- 11:11level because you're
- 11:12sitting there in the
- 11:13conversation with us.
- 11:14So we love hearing that.
- 11:16Well, if you look at it,
- 11:17like when you're doing a podcast,
- 11:19it's an hour generally, right?
- 11:20Mm-hmm.
- 11:21Like it's a commitment from
- 11:23these people to sit down
- 11:24and listen to you for an hour.
- 11:25Mm-hmm.
- 11:26Instagram, scrolling by.
- 11:27Yeah.
- 11:29Right?
- 11:29That is it.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:30Right.
- 11:31And it's 60 seconds or three minutes or,
- 11:34but a podcast is an hour
- 11:36and they're getting to know you more.
- 11:37Yeah.
- 11:38And if they stick with you,
- 11:39that means they must like you.
- 11:41Yeah.
- 11:42It is like-
- 11:47Or that.
- 11:47I mean, thank you for watching either way.
- 11:49Yeah, exactly.
- 11:51So yes, but we love doing the podcast.
- 11:55It is super fun for us to
- 11:56sit down and have some
- 11:57crazy conversations each
- 11:58week and to hear that
- 11:59people love them and laugh with us.
- 12:02It means a lot.
- 12:04It's funny because when we first started,
- 12:07we had one show that tried
- 12:08to do everything.
- 12:09We'd have an interview.
- 12:10We'd talk about our personal lives.
- 12:12We'd talk about the news in the space.
- 12:14And it got cluttered really bad.
- 12:17Now,
- 12:18our roundtable that we do every
- 12:19Tuesday afternoon is just
- 12:21my friends getting on and
- 12:22talking about our personal lives.
- 12:24And maybe a little bit of CrossFit stuff.
- 12:26But...
- 12:27that's one show we do.
- 12:29Then on Thursday nights,
- 12:30we do like a strict new show now,
- 12:33like straight down the middle,
- 12:35straight down the fairway.
- 12:36We're talking CrossFit news,
- 12:38what's going on, giving opinions,
- 12:40all that kind of stuff.
- 12:42Um,
- 12:42but Jeffrey Birchfield brings this up
- 12:44and I wanted to ask you myself, uh,
- 12:47speaking of people who are
- 12:48your friends now, uh,
- 12:50Jay Birch is one of those.
- 12:51Uh,
- 12:52have you thought about live or bringing
- 12:53on a guest?
- 12:54And when we switched to live, uh,
- 12:56it was a game changer for us.
- 12:59Yeah.
- 13:00So we have thought about that.
- 13:02I can honestly say we don't
- 13:04have a good setup for what
- 13:05we do right now.
- 13:06It's literally Matt and I in
- 13:07our office chairs in our,
- 13:09in my phone recording in
- 13:10our Bluetooth mic.
- 13:11So in the future,
- 13:13when we have a better setup,
- 13:14that would be so fun.
- 13:16Actually, I have to say this in the past,
- 13:18Matt,
- 13:18when he's done his individual podcast,
- 13:20he called it the bolt pod.
- 13:22He used to bring some
- 13:23members of the gym and,
- 13:25uh, onto it.
- 13:25And it was a really fun
- 13:27thing because these are
- 13:28your friends that you
- 13:28always work out with,
- 13:29but you get to learn a
- 13:30little bit more about them
- 13:31when they're on the podcast.
- 13:32So I would love to do stuff like that.
- 13:35Um,
- 13:36obviously big names and everything are
- 13:37always fun to talk to as well,
- 13:39but it's kind of like the
- 13:41same thing you do, Scott,
- 13:42is you give those athletes
- 13:44that haven't like myself to
- 13:46two years ago that haven't
- 13:48gotten to tell their story yet.
- 13:51And given the opportunity,
- 13:52I'd love to do that,
- 13:53like within our community and,
- 13:55And then if anyone else wants to jump on,
- 13:59but it's, it's,
- 14:00we're limited a little bit
- 14:00by my schedule and our
- 14:03setup a little bit when it comes to that.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:06If,
- 14:06if the only time you have is 3am live
- 14:08probably isn't that good anyway,
- 14:09because nobody's up, you know,
- 14:12I end up at 3am, but I would be if I,
- 14:14I mean, sleep is boring,
- 14:16but I have to sleep.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:18I don't even know how you
- 14:19keep your schedule.
- 14:20It's, it's insane.
- 14:21Yeah.
- 14:22I like it that way.
- 14:24Omar says, funny AF.
- 14:27And you are.
- 14:29More laughs.
- 14:30We need more laughs.
- 14:31Denise Moore,
- 14:34amazing 65-plus Masters athlete, says,
- 14:37I love Becca.
- 14:39I love you, too.
- 14:40Thank you, guys.
- 14:41It always means a lot to
- 14:42know you guys are out there
- 14:43cheering us on over here.
- 14:46It's funny you say that when
- 14:49we first talked,
- 14:50you hadn't had a lot of
- 14:51opportunities on a podcast,
- 14:52and that's what this show does.
- 14:54We try to give a voice to
- 14:55those that don't have one in the space.
- 14:58But honestly, it was out of greed.
- 15:00The stories are way more
- 15:01interesting from those
- 15:04people than... Everybody's
- 15:08heard what Justin has to say.
- 15:09Everybody's heard what Tia has to say.
- 15:11Nobody heard what Rebecca
- 15:13had to say two years ago.
- 15:15Yeah, it's just new conversations.
- 15:17That's good stuff.
- 15:19Right,
- 15:19and sometimes it's like Denise's
- 15:21story that we just pulled up.
- 15:23I just interviewed her.
- 15:24She's a breast cancer
- 15:25survivor who is competing
- 15:27and went through a lot of
- 15:29trauma overcoming some things,
- 15:32and then she won Legends last year.
- 15:35That's amazing.
- 15:37Just as, if not more,
- 15:39I would argue more
- 15:41inspiring than standing on
- 15:43top of the podium at the end of the
- 15:45at the end of the season.
- 15:46So I it's, it's,
- 15:48that's the power of
- 15:50everything that we do in
- 15:51this sport and just in
- 15:53sports in general is just,
- 15:55it's hard work.
- 15:56It's putting yourself in
- 15:57uncomfortable situations, challenging,
- 15:59and then pulling yourself
- 16:01out of these challenges and
- 16:03getting stronger because of it.
- 16:04So I love it.
- 16:06I love hearing those stories.
- 16:08Uh, Jay Birch says,
- 16:08I knew Becca was an incredible athlete.
- 16:10The first time I saw her
- 16:11compete hard of fire for sure.
- 16:13Oh, thank you.
- 16:16That means a lot.
- 16:17I mean,
- 16:17I've been... I... If anyone has
- 16:21been around since I competed,
- 16:22I started competing as a teenager.
- 16:25And how cool is unofficial?
- 16:29We're going back to Carson.
- 16:31I competed as a teenager in Carson.
- 16:35So there is about to be a
- 16:37full circle happening there.
- 16:39But I used to... And I'll
- 16:40still kind of say it to this day.
- 16:42I was a very...
- 16:45a nervous wreck competitor, just not a,
- 16:48not a strong competitor,
- 16:49put way too much pressure on myself and,
- 16:51uh,
- 16:52in a bad way to where it hindered a
- 16:53lot of performances and
- 16:55just not being confident going out there.
- 16:56So it's really, it's,
- 16:59I can look back at so many
- 17:00years and be proud of how far we've come.
- 17:05So before we leave the internet topic,
- 17:07and I want to get into that a little bit,
- 17:09what you're talking about,
- 17:10you were inside my head on
- 17:11one of these reels.
- 17:13Oh, no.
- 17:14So I'm going to share it
- 17:16because you were inside my
- 17:18head and that's not right.
- 17:21But here it is.
- 17:27You know,
- 17:27that's probably my biggest one of
- 17:29all time.
- 17:29Really?
- 17:31I think it touched a little
- 17:32bit different community
- 17:33just being that it was the Pokemon one.
- 17:38Yeah.
- 17:38Because if my brother
- 17:40thought it was funny and
- 17:41that I wasn't being completely ridiculous,
- 17:42then we were on the right track.
- 17:45nobody loves a bench press
- 17:47more than I do oh yeah and
- 17:49then to it turn into an
- 17:51echo is just insulting
- 17:55that's that's one of those
- 17:57where this is the beauty of
- 17:58content creating and any
- 17:59art that I think if you are
- 18:00an artist of some sort out
- 18:01there whether it's like
- 18:03video editing painting
- 18:04whatever it is I came up
- 18:06with that one on the spot I
- 18:08go let's shoot it took me
- 18:12like five minutes to shoot
- 18:14it and it came together
- 18:15like that and it's probably
- 18:17the biggest one so I get a
- 18:18little bit butthurt when I
- 18:19spend like 30 minutes
- 18:21trying to set up and edit
- 18:22and shoot a reels and then
- 18:24it just flops I get a
- 18:25little bit butthurt about
- 18:26that but what are you gonna
- 18:28do um denise jumps back in
- 18:32if I don't see a becca ig
- 18:34video every day I'm not
- 18:35happy I look forward to
- 18:36your content every day
- 18:38Dude,
- 18:39I feel bad if like during quarterfinals,
- 18:42I tried to stock up on a
- 18:43few videos before we
- 18:45started competing because
- 18:47it's hard when I get in the
- 18:49competition mode.
- 18:50I have no my creativity
- 18:52brain is shut down.
- 18:54And it's just full focus on
- 18:56those workouts.
- 18:57And I feel bad.
- 18:58I'm like, shoot,
- 19:00I love to post those videos
- 19:01every single day and get some laughs.
- 19:03And I feel bad if I don't if
- 19:06I don't get a video out.
- 19:07I should have another good one today.
- 19:08I'm going to show one more
- 19:11because it's the one that
- 19:13just I think it was out yesterday.
- 19:16Yes, sure.
- 19:18That that one was that one
- 19:19was based off of something
- 19:21in quarterfinals, too.
- 19:23uh I had a lot of
- 19:24quarterfinals ideas that
- 19:25matt and I were
- 19:26brainstorming on so we we
- 19:28had an athlete at our gym
- 19:30that would keep when he
- 19:32snatched it was always out
- 19:33in front of him so he
- 19:35always like ran forward
- 19:36with it and then we had a
- 19:38local comp that actually
- 19:39made you do it in a box and
- 19:40if you stepped outside the
- 19:41box um it was no good and
- 19:45he didn't get a single lift
- 19:47I mean,
- 19:48that's how that's how it should be
- 19:49for safety reasons.
- 19:50But sometimes in the gym,
- 19:52you take it on a little
- 19:53walk and everything.
- 19:56You know,
- 19:56what's funny about that one is I
- 19:57was shooting it in the
- 19:58morning and then all of our
- 19:59neighbors that are all
- 20:00around our building complex
- 20:02just saw me walking around
- 20:03with a barbell in my tripod
- 20:04and I just act normal the whole time.
- 20:08So the comic brilliance of
- 20:09this one is you take a
- 20:12concept like keeping it out
- 20:13in front of you and then
- 20:13you have to run with it.
- 20:15But when you stop on the couch,
- 20:17took it to a whole different level.
- 20:19That's,
- 20:19that's on the spot thinking I've
- 20:21just walked around the building.
- 20:22I was like, Oh, this might be funny.
- 20:26So, um, so yeah,
- 20:27that one really tickled me.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:29Good.
- 20:31Um, so, um, the season, um,
- 20:38you came into this season.
- 20:39I want to start with this
- 20:40last year at the west semifinal was,
- 20:44was not ideal.
- 20:47Jamie caught up with you after, I think,
- 20:49event four,
- 20:51and you did an interview with her.
- 20:53And what I love about you is
- 20:54that you don't shy away
- 20:56from the tough conversation,
- 20:58and you are probably the
- 20:59most self-aware athlete that I know.
- 21:04And I'm going to play that interview,
- 21:06and then I want to see how
- 21:08that evolved into this season.
- 21:12Let's see it.
- 21:13And then our mics will mute during this.
- 21:17It's unit 32,
- 21:17but I'm going to show this real quick.
- 21:21I personally have thought
- 21:22that programming was kind
- 21:23of power outweigh strength biased.
- 21:25Can you give me your
- 21:26thoughts on the weekend so far?
- 21:28Yeah,
- 21:28I think there's no sugarcoating that.
- 21:30I think we've all figured
- 21:31out at this point,
- 21:32like the programming is what it is.
- 21:34And a lot of the workouts
- 21:36are leaning towards just
- 21:37having a little bit more
- 21:38mass behind you and having
- 21:39that power output which
- 21:40we've been training all
- 21:41year so regardless of what
- 21:43those numbers look like on
- 21:44the leaderboard I'm like
- 21:45exceeding expectations and
- 21:47everything for what I had
- 21:47for myself and then the end
- 21:50goal is no matter what the
- 21:52programming is I want to be
- 21:53able to make it and qualify
- 21:55obviously for this year and
- 21:56where I'm at right now I
- 21:57mean there's it is one more
- 21:58workout to go and I'm well
- 21:59I'm gonna fight to the end but um
- 22:02there's a lot more growth to
- 22:03happen and you guys will
- 22:05see me competing for a long time.
- 22:06Absolutely.
- 22:07So, and still trying to soak it all in.
- 22:09So you,
- 22:09would you say you are even fitter
- 22:10this year than last year?
- 22:11Oh, of course.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:13Like 60 pound dumbbells in each hand.
- 22:15That wouldn't have happened
- 22:16like six months ago.
- 22:18So the fact that we almost
- 22:19finished Linda and my goal was like,
- 22:22I would be stoked if I
- 22:23finished Linda two reps short of that.
- 22:25So, so I mean, there's still,
- 22:27we've seen so much growth
- 22:28over the past year and I'm like,
- 22:30despite like the ups and
- 22:31downs we've had with being
- 22:33a little bit frustrated
- 22:34with the programming and whatnot,
- 22:35like I still feel like
- 22:36we're headed upwards.
- 22:37Like I still feel it.
- 22:38I'm not discouraged at all.
- 22:40In fact,
- 22:40I'm like encouraged by everything
- 22:42we're seeing this weekend.
- 22:43That is amazing to hear.
- 22:45I'm excited to watch you power that bike.
- 22:47Yeah.
- 22:47And excited to watch you
- 22:49continue for another year
- 22:50and come back even stronger.
- 22:51Thank you so much.
- 22:51Good job this weekend.
- 22:52Thank you.
- 22:55What a weirdo.
- 22:55I'm just kidding.
- 22:57So there you are in the
- 22:58middle of a competition
- 23:00where at that point it was
- 23:01obvious you're not going to the games.
- 23:04And yet you are still able
- 23:06to assess yourself and your
- 23:08abilities and how much
- 23:09you've improved from the
- 23:11year before where you
- 23:12actually did go to the games.
- 23:16Is that something you've had
- 23:17to work on in your career
- 23:19or are you just naturally a
- 23:22positive person?
- 23:25I wouldn't say I'm a
- 23:25naturally positive person.
- 23:27I think that's grown over the
- 23:30i think that's a huge area
- 23:31of growth just as much as
- 23:32like physical strength uh
- 23:34because I'm really really
- 23:36hard on myself and I've
- 23:38really come to realize over
- 23:41the years of competing and
- 23:42if I want to keep competing
- 23:44if it's worth that are to
- 23:47still compete like I have
- 23:48to enjoy it and learn how
- 23:50to pull positives from it
- 23:52if not it's just I'm not
- 23:53going to compete if I'm
- 23:54just making myself miserable
- 23:56all the time, but I am,
- 23:57I do feel like the way I
- 24:00was raised in the sports
- 24:01that I grew up in and everything I was,
- 24:03I was made to compete because I,
- 24:04I really do love to do it.
- 24:07And I know the best of the
- 24:08best know when to, uh,
- 24:12appreciate like those
- 24:14moments and how you got better,
- 24:16but also not, I think when I,
- 24:19when I look back at an
- 24:21interview like that,
- 24:22I was very proud of myself
- 24:23for staying in the moment and being in,
- 24:26in trying to take away every,
- 24:27every positive from it.
- 24:30But I know in the back of my
- 24:31mind and in my heart,
- 24:32I was still pretty bummed
- 24:34and disappointed that it
- 24:36didn't end up like the year before and
- 24:39But it was there was never discouragement.
- 24:41It was just what do I need to do next?
- 24:44And the word I think I've
- 24:47been catching myself on
- 24:49even through this season is
- 24:51being patient.
- 24:53I realize I'm not at my strong.
- 24:54I'm still not at my
- 24:55strongest years when I've
- 24:56been competing since a teenager.
- 24:59I knew it'd be a long,
- 25:00long journey to find the
- 25:03biggest Becca there is.
- 25:04So we're still not at that.
- 25:07It's patience.
- 25:07It's having patience.
- 25:10Uh, so, uh,
- 25:11Jamie's actually jumped in the chat,
- 25:12loved speaking with her.
- 25:14Yeah.
- 25:16Um, so big Becca is a still thing.
- 25:20It's still a hashtag.
- 25:21It's still on your Instagram
- 25:23and it's still the main goal.
- 25:27It's everything.
- 25:28It's everything for me right now.
- 25:29And I think it's,
- 25:30I hope it connects with other people too.
- 25:32It's a mindset.
- 25:33I feel like it's an alter ego almost.
- 25:37I like it.
- 25:38I like it like in eventually,
- 25:40hopefully your superhero.
- 25:43So when you look at like last year,
- 25:47and in all of your, your,
- 25:49your lifting numbers improve.
- 25:53And it just wasn't quite
- 25:57good enough last year in a
- 25:58in a programming style that
- 26:00was very power output.
- 26:04Do you have to tell yourself
- 26:06that this programming just
- 26:07wasn't ideal and you have to be patient,
- 26:10but someday it's not going to matter?
- 26:14I would rather go through
- 26:16the things that we went
- 26:19through last year right now
- 26:21because I know my stronger
- 26:22years are coming up.
- 26:24So yes, there is a bit of...
- 26:28disappointment.
- 26:30You're really getting all
- 26:32the emotions when you go
- 26:34hit PRs mid-competition,
- 26:36but they're just not good
- 26:37enough because you have to
- 26:38be proud of that.
- 26:40But then it's not anywhere
- 26:42where you want to be.
- 26:44So I would much rather go
- 26:46through this now and keep
- 26:49filling in and realize I'm
- 26:51continuing to fill in the holes.
- 26:52So when I really am at my peak physical,
- 26:57Like state my my I'm at my
- 27:00peak mental strength state
- 27:03or my mind is the strongest
- 27:05it's ever been.
- 27:06So I think it'll all come
- 27:07together in the end.
- 27:10And there have been many
- 27:13times over the past ever
- 27:14since probably since I
- 27:16qualified for the games.
- 27:18That I felt like I was
- 27:20getting beat down and beat down.
- 27:22And that's where I've told
- 27:26some people before after the 2022 games,
- 27:29I was probably in a big rut
- 27:31just because I felt like I
- 27:32got beat up over there.
- 27:35And I was like,
- 27:37is this something I'm actually built for?
- 27:38And I said,
- 27:39if I'm going to keep going for
- 27:40this and try to be the
- 27:42athlete I know I can be,
- 27:44I have to first –
- 27:46see a bigger version of
- 27:48Becca because I felt pretty
- 27:49puny after the games.
- 27:51And then coming off of semifinals,
- 27:53it's just more tests.
- 27:55It's just more tests.
- 27:56So I think it's all paying off.
- 27:58And I mean, we're,
- 27:59we're working through it.
- 28:00Every, every stage has,
- 28:01we've gotten stronger.
- 28:02I think I feel it.
- 28:05So those 22 games, um,
- 28:08he was your coming out party
- 28:09right then there's no
- 28:10question about that I I
- 28:12have the shirt right there
- 28:15um signed and so thankful
- 28:17that you did that um the
- 28:20capital brought you to the
- 28:22Forefront of everybody it
- 28:24was a strength event at the
- 28:25end it was a strength event
- 28:26at the beginning you had to
- 28:27flip those pigs you had to
- 28:29lift those sandbags
- 28:33And why everybody related to
- 28:35you is that you struggled
- 28:36with that weight getting up those stairs,
- 28:40right?
- 28:41Yep.
- 28:42But it also set an expectation for you.
- 28:47Did you feel after the games
- 28:49like that might have been
- 28:50too much too soon?
- 28:52Or did you just embrace it
- 28:56and use it as motivation?
- 29:00That's a good question
- 29:01because when I made the games in 2022,
- 29:06I realized and I told people this.
- 29:09I go,
- 29:10we made the games because the
- 29:12programming was perfect for
- 29:14where I was at.
- 29:17There was, I did, and I execute,
- 29:20that's not all of it.
- 29:21The programming was great
- 29:22for me and I executed
- 29:25everything the best that we could.
- 29:27Perfect competition.
- 29:29Minus the lunge that I effed
- 29:31up at the end.
- 29:33If anyone remembers that.
- 29:36Near perfect competition.
- 29:38So I was super proud of that.
- 29:41I am a big believer in
- 29:43moments happen for a reason.
- 29:45And whether they happen for
- 29:46the reason of you're going
- 29:48to make a debut or you're
- 29:50going to go get your ass
- 29:51handed to you and you're
- 29:52going to get stronger because of it.
- 29:54it happened for a reason.
- 29:56And after the games,
- 29:56I knew I'd have a big
- 29:57expectation leading into the next year,
- 30:00but I can tell you this,
- 30:02no one puts more pressure on me than,
- 30:04than my own brain.
- 30:06Like I know that's the, I'll,
- 30:09that's the hardest thing I have to tackle.
- 30:11I mean,
- 30:12there's external critics everywhere
- 30:13that that's still to this day,
- 30:15like still can't understand
- 30:17like the workout that we
- 30:18just did in quarterfinals,
- 30:19like surprise that,
- 30:21that I moved a one 65 bar
- 30:23that many times I go,
- 30:24that's not a surprise to me.
- 30:25I know I can move those weights.
- 30:26We've just been looking at, um,
- 30:29maximal, um,
- 30:30one rep maxes for so long and
- 30:33heavy sandbags that are
- 30:34less technical and,
- 30:36and just have to deal with more mass.
- 30:38And, but I, I know I've,
- 30:41I'm a pretty fit person, so it's just,
- 30:45I'm excited to hopefully
- 30:47show it off more and more
- 30:48each year as we're filling in these gaps.
- 30:52So this off season, um,
- 30:55you go to Waterpalooza.
- 30:56Mm-hmm.
- 30:57The first event is a snatch complex.
- 31:02Correct?
- 31:03Yes.
- 31:04Yes, that was the first one.
- 31:07And you looked stronger than
- 31:10I've ever seen you.
- 31:13I was jumping out of my
- 31:15chair with excitement for
- 31:19your result in that first event.
- 31:21It wasn't like your best
- 31:22finish of the weekend.
- 31:24But I go to a gym where
- 31:25Christy Aramo O'Connell is the owner.
- 31:28And I've watched her
- 31:29struggle with strength.
- 31:31She's one of my peeps that I look up to.
- 31:34And as she got stronger,
- 31:36like just her finishing mid
- 31:38cap was mid pack was
- 31:40extremely exciting for me.
- 31:42And I saw that in you at Wadapalooza.
- 31:48What were your thoughts?
- 31:49Was that clarification that
- 31:52all the work you're putting
- 31:53in is getting you to where
- 31:55you need to be?
- 31:57Absolutely.
- 31:57I mean,
- 31:58those are the moments we that's why
- 31:59you do so many long
- 32:01training sessions in the gym.
- 32:02But when I went out to do
- 32:05that specific event at Wadapalooza,
- 32:07I was excited and very,
- 32:09very nervous stepping on
- 32:11the stage because I knew
- 32:12the pressure I was putting
- 32:13on myself because I wanted
- 32:15to set the tone for the year.
- 32:18And I think that that really did it.
- 32:20I mean, those lifts too,
- 32:23it was one of those moments
- 32:24you get in competition
- 32:25where it felt effortless.
- 32:28So it was a fun moment.
- 32:30So that's even better than it looked.
- 32:32If it felt effortless,
- 32:34then you're in a good place.
- 32:36Yeah, it was.
- 32:38We had a really good warm up
- 32:39leading up to that.
- 32:40I was confused.
- 32:42Matt and Gerard were standing right there.
- 32:44I was really nervous right
- 32:45before stepping onto the stage.
- 32:47But the days before Wadapalooza,
- 32:48I was like oddly more
- 32:50relaxed than I normally am
- 32:52before competitions.
- 32:53Sometimes I get really quiet
- 32:54and don't I'm pretty snippy
- 32:56around people sometimes
- 32:58when the nerves start building up.
- 32:59But I felt pretty good and
- 33:00relaxed and like we were
- 33:01having a lot of fun in Miami.
- 33:03So that was fun.
- 33:06It's so funny because as
- 33:07we've gotten to know each other,
- 33:08I know that you're kind of
- 33:10introverted away from your social media.
- 33:15And yet you push yourself to
- 33:18do all these videos and all
- 33:20these podcasts.
- 33:21And you're so good at it
- 33:22that people would be amazed
- 33:23that that's not how you are
- 33:25at a competition.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:26I'm just a weirdo.
- 33:27I don't know.
- 33:29I love making all the weird
- 33:31faces for videos and
- 33:33characters for all that.
- 33:35But when it's time to compete, I'm really,
- 33:38really quiet.
- 33:40I've tried to be,
- 33:42when I was a younger competitor,
- 33:44tried to be that...
- 33:46crack a joke right before we
- 33:48go out for competition.
- 33:50But I realized those were my
- 33:51own like insecurities
- 33:52coming out like example, funny example,
- 33:55I'm gonna be the one to
- 33:56trip and fall on my face on
- 33:58when we're running out to
- 33:59our lanes and everything.
- 34:01But it's just those are just
- 34:02little things I don't put
- 34:04in my head anymore.
- 34:05So I rather just stay quiet
- 34:08and focus on good reps in
- 34:10my head good reps keep
- 34:10going visualization.
- 34:14So you finished what a palooza, what a,
- 34:17what a mess that was with
- 34:18the rain and all of that.
- 34:21Talk about rolling with the punches.
- 34:23Yeah.
- 34:23I mean, I didn't go this year.
- 34:26I watched it on TV and it
- 34:27was frustrating just as a spectator,
- 34:29trying to figure out the schedule,
- 34:30figure out what the new event was.
- 34:33I can't imagine being an athlete.
- 34:35And I've heard rumors that
- 34:36like you're in the corral
- 34:37and all of a sudden they're like, Hey,
- 34:38we're changing this to that.
- 34:40Yeah,
- 34:41there was a lot of last minute
- 34:42changes is because it would
- 34:43start pouring or just start
- 34:44raining a little bit harder.
- 34:46But I do appreciate Wadapalooza.
- 34:48The people that were running
- 34:50it seem to be very on top
- 34:52of having things ready to go.
- 34:55or backup plans ready to go.
- 34:58But yeah,
- 34:58there were situations where
- 35:00things got changed before
- 35:02we ran out onto the floor.
- 35:05There were weights changed.
- 35:07When we got on the floor,
- 35:08the dumbbell workout,
- 35:11I looked over and I go, oh,
- 35:13that's a lighter dumbbell
- 35:14because they didn't want
- 35:1570-pound dumbbells flying into the crowd.
- 35:17Although that would have been exciting,
- 35:19I guess.
- 35:20Yeah.
- 35:21I mean...
- 35:23Yeah, Doug.
- 35:26So then we get to the open,
- 35:28and we're going to talk about,
- 35:29I think this is a good segue.
- 35:32You win event 24.3.
- 35:35And, you know,
- 35:37the big saying now is the
- 35:38open doesn't matter.
- 35:39The open doesn't matter.
- 35:40But it's got to mean
- 35:41something when you win an
- 35:42event or you do well in it
- 35:45as a gauge as to where you
- 35:46are in your fitness.
- 35:47So you win 24.3, and your gym does this.
- 35:49Mm-hmm.
- 35:55for you and they give you
- 35:57this belt we should give
- 35:59matt um a ring announcer
- 36:02like hype man spot
- 36:04somewhere so I think I i
- 36:08can unmute it maybe try
- 36:11that yeah the other side
- 36:13you might know her as coach
- 36:15rebecca around here she
- 36:17floats like a butterfly
- 36:18stinks like a big b 24.3
- 36:24World champion!
- 36:28Yes, yes, yes.
- 36:31Cut down.
- 36:34He's the man!
- 36:36Oh, look at him.
- 36:56How cool was that?
- 36:57That was one of the coolest things ever.
- 37:01My face has never looked like that before.
- 37:06Because if you've been
- 37:06around for some time,
- 37:08I'm also a big WWE fan and
- 37:10have called on WWE to be like, hey,
- 37:13if you ever need a backup,
- 37:15I know I'm a little bit on
- 37:16the smaller side,
- 37:17but I can flip off the
- 37:19ropes and everything.
- 37:20So it was so cool.
- 37:22I mean, that spending,
- 37:25and I said it when we were
- 37:26doing quarterfinals,
- 37:28doing a workout in front of those guys,
- 37:31a competition workout in
- 37:32front of those guys,
- 37:33or having moments like that,
- 37:35it almost beats anything.
- 37:37being on the live stage
- 37:39because it has so much.
- 37:40This is my family over here.
- 37:42They see all the work.
- 37:43They know the work we put in
- 37:45every single day.
- 37:46So that's special.
- 37:49I'll never forget that.
- 37:51So before we go on to
- 37:52another aspect of this,
- 37:54I love the belt idea.
- 37:56I have been pitching for
- 37:57over a year that CrossFit needs to have.
- 38:00Like when Colton and Jake
- 38:02Berman did the burpee
- 38:03workout against each other.
- 38:04Uh-huh.
- 38:05CrossFit should have had a
- 38:06belt for Colton.
- 38:08And he is now the burpee champ, right?
- 38:11And he holds that title till
- 38:12someone can beat him and challenges him.
- 38:15And I think it's a way to grow the sport.
- 38:18So like, say you're the pull-up,
- 38:22chest-to-bar pull-up champion, right?
- 38:24And you want to take people
- 38:25on and then you win the
- 38:26belt and you own that belt
- 38:27until someone can beat you.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:31More things like that,
- 38:33more involvement in the
- 38:35community with competition is great.
- 38:39I have nothing against that.
- 38:40And I will say this,
- 38:42because this is something
- 38:43that my perspective has changed on.
- 38:46Trophies are cool.
- 38:48Like, that's cool.
- 38:50Everybody like as much as
- 38:51you want to say like, oh,
- 38:53the medals and everything,
- 38:53because I grew up that way.
- 38:55I was like,
- 38:56I don't actually do it for
- 38:57things like that.
- 38:58But to have something that
- 39:00you worked so hard for and
- 39:02to be recognized for it,
- 39:04like that's that's fun.
- 39:05That's special.
- 39:06And that's competition.
- 39:08You get that you get the
- 39:09title and it's fun to have
- 39:11little things like that to to fight for.
- 39:14It just adds a little bit of
- 39:15fun and character to the sport, too.
- 39:20Trophies and medals are cool.
- 39:22A championship belt is the cat's pajamas.
- 39:28I've never heard that term, Scott.
- 39:31I'm trying to bring it back.
- 39:32It's from like the 1920s.
- 39:33I hope that means it's
- 39:37awesome and it's good.
- 39:39It's the Mac Daddy and the Daddy Mac.
- 39:42I mean, I felt that.
- 39:43That thing is awesome.
- 39:46But it belongs here at Bolt, too.
- 39:47That's super cool.
- 39:49Yeah.
- 39:50So I just think I think like
- 39:51a championship belt,
- 39:52just it it's it's universal
- 39:56as like this epic thing.
- 39:58Like boxing's been around forever.
- 40:00And then you add that to UFC
- 40:02and you add it to wrestling
- 40:03and and it's this like
- 40:05iconic award that you get.
- 40:09And so I think it's cool.
- 40:11Yeah, I mean, that whole thing.
- 40:13I mean,
- 40:13there was there's so much and you
- 40:16we talked about it's like
- 40:18this whole conversation is
- 40:19coming full story of just
- 40:22the bringing up of my own story and I,
- 40:25everybody has their own story,
- 40:27but the moment,
- 40:29the whole story of 24 three,
- 40:31which I know what you're
- 40:32about to bring up, Scott,
- 40:33I'm going to get into the
- 40:34other side of 24 three.
- 40:36It's so much of just adding
- 40:39to the storybook.
- 40:40And one of the things I'll
- 40:42always be proud of, like it's cool to,
- 40:44and it's a huge, major,
- 40:48accomplishment to make it to
- 40:50the CrossFit games.
- 40:51But there are very few
- 40:52people that can say they've won a,
- 40:55they're the best at one workout on,
- 40:58on planet earth.
- 40:59Like that's, that's really cool.
- 41:02That's a special title.
- 41:03So, you know where we're going.
- 41:06Typical Becca fashion.
- 41:08It can't be all good.
- 41:10We got a trip going out to
- 41:11the floor and everybody's
- 41:13got to come down on you for
- 41:15the way your elbows were built.
- 41:20They're built different, man.
- 41:23So there was some internet
- 41:28gripe about that you didn't
- 41:30come to full extension with your elbows.
- 41:34You then... So this is what
- 41:37I find fascinating is
- 41:39you're the queen of the internet.
- 41:40So if anybody's going to
- 41:42battle that siege...
- 41:46you're going to be equipped
- 41:47to do it and immediately
- 41:49you put out a video showing
- 41:51you doing like 10 other
- 41:53exercises and that in your
- 41:56elbows in the exact same
- 41:57position they were for that
- 41:58movement and and other
- 42:02exercises where it would
- 42:03not be advantageous not to
- 42:06be at full extension to
- 42:08your capability you are the
- 42:10first person to realize
- 42:11that do you realize that scott
- 42:14Then the other people are not smart.
- 42:17Yes, I know there.
- 42:19You are the first person to
- 42:20realize that that we
- 42:21actually struggle a little
- 42:21bit with my elbows not being able to.
- 42:24It's not that they don't
- 42:25lock out all the way.
- 42:26Think about like they're
- 42:27just not stacked as well as
- 42:30I would like them to be
- 42:32like a perfect column.
- 42:34So they're, they've been through any, they,
- 42:38we,
- 42:38I do rehab on them all ever since I've
- 42:41had injuries from
- 42:44gymnastics and everything.
- 42:45So yeah.
- 42:46And a handstand pushup,
- 42:48it's not advantageous to
- 42:49have a bent elbow like that
- 42:52will crush you.
- 42:54And yet you're great on your hands.
- 42:58So I thought that was a
- 42:59great illustration.
- 43:01There's lots of different aspects of it.
- 43:03The biggest thing is I'll
- 43:04say is a CrossFit has
- 43:05helped my keep my joints very,
- 43:08very strong.
- 43:09And that is one thing I'm very happy,
- 43:11especially when it comes to
- 43:12something like that,
- 43:13like previous injuries.
- 43:14It's something everyone
- 43:16always has those little
- 43:17things that they're always dealing with.
- 43:18But weightlifting,
- 43:20weight training and has
- 43:22kept that joint much
- 43:24stronger than I thought it would ever be.
- 43:27So that's good.
- 43:29Yeah.
- 43:29So
- 43:31so you say like you try to, you,
- 43:36your own opinion matters
- 43:37more than any kind of
- 43:38critic from the internet.
- 43:40Yet you're,
- 43:40you're besieged by so much of
- 43:42it in this moment.
- 43:44Did it take a toll on you or
- 43:46did you do that video and say,
- 43:48here's my response and I'm done with it?
- 43:52Um, the goal, I mean,
- 43:54I put out that video with,
- 43:56with that positive mindset, um,
- 44:00in the forefront.
- 44:01But I take it,
- 44:03that was honestly one of the
- 44:06hardest things to go through.
- 44:09And all kidding aside, I leaned on Matt,
- 44:15I leaned on my family,
- 44:16and I leaned on the
- 44:17community for a long time after that,
- 44:20because it was a lot of
- 44:22just up and downs in my
- 44:23head of just the last thing I would ever,
- 44:28ever want
- 44:29want to be accused of is trying to cheat.
- 44:32And that's what was being
- 44:33put in my head is like this.
- 44:35She's trying to cheat.
- 44:36She's trying to cut range of motion.
- 44:40That's not how you do it.
- 44:41That is everything plus more
- 44:45that I am not.
- 44:46I would never, ever try to do that.
- 44:49And the thing is the whole
- 44:53A story of that is that one
- 44:56workout was in some way,
- 44:59it felt like it had to
- 45:01happen the way it was with
- 45:02the type of competitor I am.
- 45:04Everybody's in this stage of
- 45:05CrossFit where they're
- 45:06saying the Open doesn't matter.
- 45:08I don't care what
- 45:09competition you sign me up for.
- 45:11Yes,
- 45:11there might be a little less pressure
- 45:13on the Open,
- 45:14But I'm going to finish
- 45:16every single one of those
- 45:17workouts on my back and
- 45:18make sure it was 100% of
- 45:20everything that I had.
- 45:22And then when I crawled up
- 45:23on an opportunity to show
- 45:25that and showcase a world record time,
- 45:28I knew from the beginning
- 45:30what we were getting ourselves into,
- 45:32of being under the microscope like that,
- 45:34where everybody was going
- 45:35to be so nitpicky and everything.
- 45:37And some people would understand.
- 45:40And in the vlog,
- 45:41which I'm sure most people have seen,
- 45:44I talk about it where there
- 45:46were some things that I
- 45:48didn't like about our first attempt.
- 45:49And there was a reason to redo it,
- 45:53even though I was very
- 45:54confident in my first attempt.
- 45:55I was like,
- 45:56there's more in this workout
- 45:58and there's more we have to
- 45:59show the world.
- 46:00So we redid it.
- 46:01And I loved the way the
- 46:04second attempt went.
- 46:06And there was so much
- 46:07emotion that went from starting 24-3.
- 46:11I did my first attempt on Friday morning.
- 46:14I immediately knew what boat
- 46:15we were getting into.
- 46:17with the drama of video review these days,
- 46:20how much stress I put on
- 46:22myself being that I am
- 46:23involved in social media,
- 46:25I know how to work a camera
- 46:26and everything.
- 46:27So I want to make sure my
- 46:28video is legit and unquestionable.
- 46:31And then when Matt said, Hey,
- 46:35we're going to go for
- 46:36another attempt on this
- 46:37open workout because we
- 46:38have a chance of setting or
- 46:40of being at the top.
- 46:41Like that's not a chance you get a lot.
- 46:44My whole entire weekend,
- 46:45because I did my redo on Monday.
- 46:47So we did the first attempt
- 46:48on Friday and then leading up to Monday,
- 46:52I've never dreamt about a
- 46:53workout so much.
- 46:55My whole weekend,
- 46:56my mindset was dedicated to 24 three and
- 46:59And from there on, I did it.
- 47:02Score was submitted.
- 47:03Everything was official.
- 47:04And then we dealt with like, what,
- 47:07a week of waiting for the official call.
- 47:10So it was just in my brain for so long.
- 47:14And it was just a lot of ups and downs,
- 47:17a lot of moments.
- 47:18But I kept trying.
- 47:20And it wasn't until that
- 47:21video that we just watched
- 47:23of the belt to where I was
- 47:25really proud because I felt like,
- 47:29the only people that the people,
- 47:31like I said, in my post about my elbows,
- 47:33the people that know, no, and those are,
- 47:37those are my people.
- 47:39And when we did,
- 47:39when they brought out that
- 47:41when people were yelling and cheering on,
- 47:43on Saturday, it really,
- 47:44it almost brought me to
- 47:45tears because it was such
- 47:47an emotional rollercoaster.
- 47:49It sucks that you can't
- 47:50enjoy a moment like that more.
- 47:51That was the sucky part of it.
- 47:54I felt like I was being
- 47:55robbed of such a big accomplishment.
- 48:00Did it affect your training
- 48:01that week at all?
- 48:04Training helped.
- 48:07When I get into a workout,
- 48:08I can shut all that off.
- 48:11Okay.
- 48:12Do you keep it as receipt and go,
- 48:15I'm going to show these
- 48:15people what I'm capable of?
- 48:18Oh, yeah, I'm excited.
- 48:19Now we're past quarterfinals.
- 48:21Well, well, we still got video review.
- 48:22I never want to jump too far
- 48:24ahead of that.
- 48:25I've gotten one video reviewed.
- 48:26I just saw it this morning.
- 48:29But yeah,
- 48:31live competitions where it's fun.
- 48:34And,
- 48:35and the best part about live
- 48:37competition is there is no video review.
- 48:39Right?
- 48:41There's no internet or keyboard warriors,
- 48:43whatever the term is.
- 48:44Yeah.
- 48:45Yeah.
- 48:46It's, it's, it's, it's, oh,
- 48:48let's go perform.
- 48:50So let's talk quarterfinals.
- 48:53You went in.
- 48:54You finished fifth in North America West,
- 48:57which is way above what you
- 48:58needed to do to get to Carson.
- 49:02You finished 36th worldwide,
- 49:04which is a nice checkpoint to see, hey,
- 49:07top 40 go to the games.
- 49:09Where am I?
- 49:10What does that mean?
- 49:12Do you look at that as meaning anything,
- 49:15or is it just I got to move
- 49:17forward and that's...
- 49:22The way quarterfinals was structured,
- 49:24just being four events,
- 49:26I don't take the worldwide
- 49:27leaderboard into account.
- 49:29Although I was very happy
- 49:31with the workouts.
- 49:32I think a lot of people were too.
- 49:34It seemed I loved finishing
- 49:37all the workouts on my back.
- 49:39They really tested you and I
- 49:42felt like I was doing CrossFit,
- 49:44which is getting the ugly,
- 49:45we're gonna die at the end
- 49:47of this workout feeling.
- 49:50um we were quarterfinals is
- 49:52kind of what you said make
- 49:55sure I mean we've competed
- 49:57every workout super hard
- 49:58but make sure it's clean
- 50:00crisp and it does what we
- 50:01need to do to get us to
- 50:03live competition and I'm
- 50:05happy with my scores I will
- 50:07say this I think there's
- 50:09more room in in some of
- 50:10that so I wasn't like
- 50:12ecstatic about some of my
- 50:14some of my scores
- 50:17um with the blind
- 50:18leaderboard how tough does
- 50:20that make the weekend when
- 50:22you train alone it makes it
- 50:24very long yeah like some
- 50:28athletes have like their
- 50:29training buddies and
- 50:30everything and uh I like it
- 50:33I like the challenge of it
- 50:34but it is a little bit
- 50:36nerve-wracking I know last
- 50:38year um I was with jamie um
- 50:41she was doing quarters for
- 50:42masters blind leaderboard
- 50:45she trains alone
- 50:47And so there's no idea where you're at.
- 50:50Like you put in a school,
- 50:51you don't know if it's good, bad,
- 50:53nobody's sharing anything with her.
- 50:55And it was really tough.
- 50:56And I'm wondering if you go
- 50:57through the same thing.
- 51:00For sure.
- 51:00And especially take
- 51:02quarterfinals workout one this year,
- 51:05a whole different structure
- 51:07of a workout that we've
- 51:08never really competed before,
- 51:10like an EMOM structure, right?
- 51:12Like fight gone bad.
- 51:15That was the one we ended up
- 51:17redoing just specifically
- 51:20to learn what that work,
- 51:21how to do that workout.
- 51:22Like,
- 51:24I was confident I did better on the
- 51:26second attempt.
- 51:27And I was we were confident
- 51:28in my first attempt that it
- 51:29would do what it needed to do.
- 51:31But we're like,
- 51:33let's go do something
- 51:34completely different being
- 51:36that we had extra days to
- 51:37do quarterfinals versus in the past,
- 51:39we'd have less days and more events.
- 51:42Um, we just learned more from that one,
- 51:45but that having some
- 51:46specific events like that one, uh,
- 51:50it's nerve wracking because
- 51:51you're just waiting to see what else is,
- 51:54is going on out there.
- 51:56Just kind of don't have that idea.
- 51:58You had extra days,
- 52:00but there were no sprints
- 52:02in this workout in this test.
- 52:05And a lot of people got crushed.
- 52:09Mm-hmm.
- 52:10If you gave 100% to these workouts,
- 52:14you were hurting at the end
- 52:15of the weekend.
- 52:17If anyone out there did that
- 52:19wall ball burpee one twice,
- 52:22major props to you because
- 52:23that's the one that got me.
- 52:24My quads were very, very,
- 52:26very sore after that one.
- 52:29I know some of our folks
- 52:31around here were having
- 52:32issues getting on and off
- 52:33the toilets after that one.
- 52:39And I see Jamie still in the comment.
- 52:41Her argument was that the
- 52:43interval workout was harder
- 52:44than the wall ball burpee.
- 52:46That was, in my opinion,
- 52:49the first workout with the stations,
- 52:51the interval one,
- 52:53hardest workout we've done
- 52:54of the season so far.
- 52:58It was and I loved it
- 53:00because it was just as much
- 53:01as a mental test as it was
- 53:04a physical test,
- 53:05because you had to be
- 53:06mentally engaged with the clock,
- 53:08how many reps you were doing each round.
- 53:12So I loved it.
- 53:13It was very you had to be
- 53:14very strategic with it.
- 53:16And everybody had probably
- 53:17had a different plan going in.
- 53:19The funny thing that
- 53:20happened on that wall ball
- 53:22burpee workout is a lot of
- 53:24my friends were texting me
- 53:26that their phone shut off
- 53:27in the middle of that.
- 53:29Many of them passed the 50%
- 53:31mark and then had to redo
- 53:33it because their camera shut off.
- 53:37What precautions do you take
- 53:39that that doesn't happen?
- 53:40You don't want to even know.
- 53:44There is so much that I do.
- 53:45I get more and more insane
- 53:49when it comes to
- 53:50quarterfinals and getting
- 53:51these videos on right,
- 53:53which is understandable
- 53:55with the scrutiny we get on
- 53:56videos these days, which is appropriate.
- 53:58I have nothing against it.
- 53:59Everybody needs to try hard
- 54:01on these videos because it
- 54:02is weird to do video online qualifiers.
- 54:05And we need to be able to
- 54:06see everything as best as we can.
- 54:08That being said,
- 54:09all these workouts were long.
- 54:11I was so worried about my phone storage.
- 54:14I did have one of my backup
- 54:16cameras crash on one of them.
- 54:18Luckily, we had that was the backup.
- 54:23I have, so on the first two days,
- 54:25when my family's around,
- 54:27my dad is the best and
- 54:28he'll break out his iPad,
- 54:30which is an extra camera too,
- 54:32just to set it up just in case.
- 54:33But I have my phone,
- 54:34my iPad as the backup.
- 54:37And then usually there's my dad's iPad.
- 54:39So I have three cameras on me.
- 54:43And I charged up this year
- 54:45with all the scrutiny with my elbow.
- 54:47I charged up my old phone to
- 54:48make a special elbow cam.
- 54:50Now,
- 54:50I didn't have to use that based on the
- 54:52events, but I was like, you guys,
- 54:53I'll break this out if needed.
- 54:55I will put a camera right on
- 54:57my elbow where it looks
- 54:59less like like a rainbow.
- 55:01So you guys can see that I'm
- 55:04getting locked out and everything.
- 55:06Uh,
- 55:06so there are two to three cameras set
- 55:09up before every workout.
- 55:12I make sure I have more than
- 55:13enough storage.
- 55:14It's set to airplane mode.
- 55:15I think I shared this on my newsletter.
- 55:17I was like, if you guys use this,
- 55:18I think you'll be good.
- 55:19But airplane mode,
- 55:21fully charged electronics, all of that.
- 55:24But half the time in the workout,
- 55:26especially something like that one,
- 55:27I'm thinking about, please,
- 55:29I hope the camera's still going.
- 55:32I hope it's still going.
- 55:35extra stress uh jay birch
- 55:38says how many times did you
- 55:40check to ensure your scores
- 55:42and videos uploaded
- 55:43correctly about a thousand
- 55:46about a thousand it's so
- 55:49this is what I do as soon
- 55:51as I finish the workout I
- 55:53have this whole I have this
- 55:54whole thing figured out
- 55:55this is why I'm tired like
- 55:57after quarterfinals not my
- 55:58body's not tired my brain
- 55:59is tired immediately after
- 56:01I finish the workout they
- 56:02go get uploaded to youtube
- 56:05Both the main camera and the
- 56:09backup camera get uploaded to YouTube.
- 56:12Then the score,
- 56:13being that it's a hidden leaderboard,
- 56:15you put your score in ASAP
- 56:16because you can always go
- 56:17back and edit them.
- 56:19You can delete scores and edit them,
- 56:21so you might as well get
- 56:22something in there,
- 56:23even if you choose to redo it after.
- 56:27What?
- 56:28Um, the there was a little bit.
- 56:31I think we all know I'm not
- 56:33going to sugarcoat anything.
- 56:34The mishap with the the some
- 56:36people putting in the
- 56:37incorrect score for the
- 56:38workout for I've heard that
- 56:40been going around.
- 56:42You know what I'm talking about?
- 56:44No, I do not.
- 56:46Okay,
- 56:47so there were some people that were
- 56:48entering clean and jerks.
- 56:50I think they're fixing them right now.
- 56:52I think I got an update on that.
- 56:54But people were putting in
- 56:55the max amount of clean and
- 56:56jerks they did on the last
- 56:57bar and not adding up the
- 56:5930 reps that were before that.
- 57:02So they were putting in a
- 57:03much lower score.
- 57:05When you enter in your score...
- 57:08on the in on your profile it
- 57:11gives you I think the the
- 57:13website's great I don't
- 57:14know how it does this but
- 57:17it gives you a summary of
- 57:18what you completed in the
- 57:19workout so it goes it it if
- 57:22I'm doing the clean and
- 57:23jerk workout it gives me
- 57:25you did 10 clean and jerk I got 58 reps
- 57:28You did 10 clean and jerks
- 57:29at workout one or weight
- 57:31110 at weight 210 at weight
- 57:33three and then 28 reps at
- 57:36the final barbell.
- 57:37It gives you a summary of your workout.
- 57:40And I look at it.
- 57:42I screenshot it.
- 57:44I show Matt and anyone who's
- 57:46standing around me to make
- 57:47sure I'm not crazy.
- 57:49They all verify my scores.
- 57:51And then I submit it and
- 57:52then go check it about a
- 57:53thousand times before the
- 57:54submission window ends.
- 57:57No joke.
- 57:57I have screenshots of everything.
- 58:00So one of my friends who the phone cut out,
- 58:04airplane mode and do not
- 58:05disturb are not equal partners.
- 58:07I've always done airplane mode.
- 58:11I think,
- 58:11I don't know what do not disturb does.
- 58:14He had airplane mode and got
- 58:15a spam phone call and it
- 58:16cut off his email.
- 58:19So we need to put on do not
- 58:20disturb as well?
- 58:23I think that is what he is saying.
- 58:25Okay.
- 58:26Thank you, Corey.
- 58:27We survived this time,
- 58:28but I will take that into account.
- 58:32Well,
- 58:32I think an iPad is even safer because
- 58:33there's no phone calls, right?
- 58:36I think my phone connects to my iPad.
- 58:38So I think whatever comes
- 58:39through on my phone comes on my iPad.
- 58:42Yikes.
- 58:42We're going to have to test
- 58:44that going into next year.
- 58:45We made it.
- 58:46Yeah.
- 58:47You're all live now.
- 58:52But yeah,
- 58:53that's why I don't... People were
- 58:55asking me if I was excited
- 58:56about quarterfinals.
- 58:58I told them no, for that reason.
- 59:00Am I excited to compete always?
- 59:03Yes.
- 59:04But for the videos and everything?
- 59:07That's stressful.
- 59:08I know we had a question back here...
- 59:12Sure.
- 59:15I think it was Sarah Cooper.
- 59:16Here it is.
- 59:17Found it.
- 59:18How were her training
- 59:19changed between now and semis?
- 59:22Good question.
- 59:24So...
- 59:29being that the season,
- 59:32the dates changed this year,
- 59:35we have such little time
- 59:37between quarters and semis.
- 59:41Like we have a month from here.
- 59:43I, Matt,
- 59:45Definitely mentioned to me, like he's like,
- 59:48we're we're ready for quarterfinals.
- 59:49You're always good at in the gym stuff.
- 59:52We're training for semifinals right now.
- 59:54We're lifting the heavy sandbags.
- 59:56We're doing odd objects.
- 59:58We're getting on this morning.
- 59:59I posted we were immediately
- 1:00:01back on the runner.
- 1:00:02We're getting some running volume in.
- 1:00:04um basically uh to kind of
- 1:00:08put it in a short sentence
- 1:00:11let's do less in the gym
- 1:00:13stuff or less traditional
- 1:00:16crossfit and start moving
- 1:00:18odd objects getting we
- 1:00:20might go jump on a pegboard
- 1:00:23we will do some more
- 1:00:24running volume we'll hit
- 1:00:25longer time domains um
- 1:00:28And then just things like that.
- 1:00:30So we were already training
- 1:00:32for semifinals before quarters.
- 1:00:35I'm pretty confident in all
- 1:00:37of my in the gym open slash
- 1:00:39quarterfinals fitness.
- 1:00:42Now it's time to start
- 1:00:43moving odd objects and just
- 1:00:47filling in any other holes
- 1:00:49that we think we found along the way.
- 1:00:52Well, as always,
- 1:00:53the hour flies by so
- 1:00:55doggone fast with you.
- 1:00:56And we have already passed it.
- 1:01:01So we will let you go and
- 1:01:03get back to your day
- 1:01:03because I know you are one
- 1:01:04of the busiest people in CrossFit.
- 1:01:06And as we saw in the chat,
- 1:01:08people are waiting for their IG reels.
- 1:01:10Yes.
- 1:01:11I have to get to it.
- 1:01:12I haven't shot it yet.
- 1:01:13But it's coming, guys.
- 1:01:17Um,
- 1:01:17this is a great episode for you guys
- 1:01:19just jumping in.
- 1:01:19You need to go back and
- 1:01:20check this one out.
- 1:01:22Um, great talk.
- 1:01:23Uh,
- 1:01:23thank you for being as always so
- 1:01:25transparent about what
- 1:01:27happened with you in 24.3
- 1:01:28and all of that stuff.
- 1:01:30You were awesome as always.
- 1:01:32And good luck at semis.
- 1:01:34And I can't wait till you
- 1:01:35make the games and we'll
- 1:01:36have you back on to
- 1:01:37celebrate that moment.
- 1:01:38Gotta represent Texas.
- 1:01:39It's going to be a good rest
- 1:01:40of the season.
- 1:01:41Thank you for having me, Scott.
- 1:01:42It's always a blast.
- 1:01:43that's a huge,
- 1:01:44how much pressure is on you
- 1:01:45that the games are in Texas
- 1:01:47and your home state?
- 1:01:49And do you want to make it
- 1:01:51while they're there?
- 1:01:52Yeah.
- 1:01:53I want to hold down home base.
- 1:01:55This is our state.
- 1:01:56I'm just kidding.
- 1:01:57Okay.
- 1:01:57But I'm not, am I, am I kidding?
- 1:02:02I do.
- 1:02:02I do want to make my fellow Texans proud.
- 1:02:06Awesome.
- 1:02:07Well,
- 1:02:08That's a great way to end.
- 1:02:09Thank you, everybody in the chat.
- 1:02:10You guys have made this awesome.
- 1:02:12We will see everybody next
- 1:02:13time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 1:02:16Bye, guys.
- 1:02:17Bye.
