- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Megan and I am a longtime Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm a former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, we're giving
- 0:19Speaker 1: you our first impressions of the May lineup of movies.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We have five new movies in the month of May,
- 0:26Speaker 1: starting with Kentucky Roses on Saturday, May second. This is
- 0:31Speaker 1: Kentucky Derby Day that it is premiering on, and the
- 0:34Speaker 1: synopsis is. Sadie Moore works in the Churchill Down's greenhouse,
- 0:37Speaker 1: dreaming of becoming a florist and contributing to the Derby's
- 0:40Speaker 1: Garland of roses, just like her great grandmother did nearly
- 0:44Speaker 1: a century earlier. When Ash Taylor, the son of Churchill
- 0:47Speaker 1: Down CEO, arrives to do emergency repairs on the iconic
- 0:51Speaker 1: Twin Spires after storm damage, an unlikely romance unfolds and
- 0:57Speaker 1: a generational secret comes to light. I'm pointing to my shirt.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Are these the Twins Spires?
- 1:03Speaker 2: They are?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Wendy and I are wearing the Andrew Walker merch sent
- 1:08Speaker 1: to us so kindly by the Addressing Festive team. The
- 1:11Speaker 1: shorts are really cute. I gotta admit I'm impressed. Great shirts, Yes,
- 1:14Speaker 1: cute and comfortable. Yes, yes, your shirt does feature the
- 1:18Speaker 1: iconic twin spires.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think yours has one too. Your only has one?
- 1:22Speaker 2: I have so low spire.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah, this does star Andrew Walker in the role of
- 1:30Speaker 1: Ash Taylor. Andrew has been giving us some good stuff lately.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I think I have so many questions right now, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: I think you can talk about it. You've seen the movie.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I have, and it's.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Not technulally a fair first impression, right, I haven't seen
- 1:44Speaker 1: the movie. Now I have a question because I did
- 1:46Speaker 1: see a preview and I saw a very clean cut
- 1:50Speaker 1: Andrew Walker. Yes, is he in the different timeline? Is
- 1:55Speaker 1: he a nineteen twenty nine timeline?
- 1:57Speaker 2: He's not. Oh, then it's just.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Like a clean cut look he has in the present day.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Then yeah, it was giving nineteen thirty two. He is
- 2:06Speaker 1: in the present day, Okay, but he has like a
- 2:08Speaker 1: real his family's real, like buttoned up southern and so
- 2:14Speaker 1: my guess is, like when you saw him, he may
- 2:16Speaker 1: have been with his family, got it, and he takes
- 2:18Speaker 1: on a different vibe around them. Also, there are some
- 2:21Speaker 1: like nicer events that he attends. I don't remember what
- 2:24Speaker 1: scenes in the preview, he's like at a microphone's and
- 2:28Speaker 1: he looks like he's wearing like a really nice suit
- 2:30Speaker 1: and his hair is really slicked and short. Anyway, I'm
- 2:34Speaker 1: really looking forward to this, to this movie. You are, yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: I mean, and you said it was really good, so
- 2:40Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it. Oh dat. Annabel is a Hallmark newcomer.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I really enjoyed her quite a bit in this role.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I mean, obviously we'll talk more about it. I know
- 2:48Speaker 1: this is supposed to be first impression, but I can't
- 2:50Speaker 1: lie to you. I've seen it. I think it's a
- 2:52Speaker 1: must watch. I think people are going to enjoy it.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I think the on location shooting did a lot for
- 2:59Speaker 1: this movie. I'm going to give you an advance digit
- 3:02Speaker 1: see that there's one scene that's very obviously to me,
- 3:05Speaker 1: not shot on location. Tell me when you find it. Oh, okay,
- 3:08Speaker 1: drop it in our first impressions over on Girls Gun
- 3:11Speaker 1: Hallmark Instagram. But I think this is a nice way
- 3:14Speaker 1: to kick off the month. Back to back weekends, we
- 3:15Speaker 1: got a Tyler Hines and then we got a Andrew Walker.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Hallmark knows what they're doing. That's right, they know, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: in conjunction with this. Last weekend they ran a Tyler
- 3:25Speaker 1: Hines Marathon. This weekend they are running an Andrew Walker Marathon.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That schedule has already dropped on our Instagram as of
- 3:32Speaker 1: this episode droppings that you can see the rundown of
- 3:35Speaker 1: the Andrew Walker movies that are out this weekend. Full disclosure,
- 3:38Speaker 1: am I gonna put the notes together for this episode?
- 3:40Speaker 1: We're doing here and I'm reading it for the first time.
- 3:42Speaker 1: A jewelry collection inspired by the film is launching exclusively
- 3:46Speaker 1: at Hallmark gold Crown stores. Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I wonder if that's out yet.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I mean, why aren't they advertising that yet? Then even
- 3:55Speaker 1: Andrew's passion project here were these shirts kind of feel
- 3:59Speaker 1: like should have come out maybe like, oh, maybe another
- 4:03Speaker 1: week prior. Yeah, I agree, So I'm looking. There is
- 4:07Speaker 1: a Kentucky Roses gold metal necklace with crystal horseshoe and
- 4:11Speaker 1: Roses pendant. When you see the movie you will recognize it.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It is twenty dollars and honestly quite cute. There's a
- 4:18Speaker 1: hat pin. There's a charm necklace that's so cute with
- 4:21Speaker 1: a horse and a horseshoe and a hat and a
- 4:24Speaker 1: rose and a little I'm gonna assume mint Julip.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That's adorable. And then there's this stuff is actually very cute.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Okay, I'm gonna get it from my seat and come
- 4:35Speaker 1: over to I know, I can't move my computer. It's
- 4:37Speaker 1: all gold. Look, here's the charm bracelet. This is super right.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Here's the horseshoe necklace. This bracelet stat adorable, very on trend. Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 1: there's another charm bracelet, multiple charm bracelets, actually cute, little
- 4:52Speaker 1: stud earrings, little stud earrings, an enamel pin, very cute.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I'm actually quite impressed with this collection here, Like I
- 5:02Speaker 1: would wear these pieces very cute, and I'm not just
- 5:04Speaker 1: saying that. And they didn't send us any but we
- 5:08Speaker 1: would take it, but drop it at the DMS for
- 5:11Speaker 1: our shipping address. May ninth, we have the premiere of
- 5:14Speaker 1: All's Fair in Love and Majong. This is Mother's Day
- 5:18Speaker 1: Weekend premiere featuring Fiona Googleman and Paul Campbell, as well
- 5:23Speaker 1: as some others. But let me read the synopsis first, Okay.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Ronnie is a beloved school nurse and devoted mom who
- 5:30Speaker 1: hosts a long standing Majong game with her dear friends.
- 5:34Speaker 2: When she becomes an empty.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Nester, her whole world tilts, Oh, oh, if you've been
- 5:43Speaker 3: paying attention to what life is like over here, when
- 5:46Speaker 3: he's gonna sob through this one, I.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Want to cry right now just reading that. Ronnie.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It goes on to say her daughter leaves for college,
- 5:54Speaker 1: her hours get cut, and her ex insists it's time
- 5:57Speaker 1: to sell the home she's poured her heart in A
- 6:01Speaker 1: chance moment at a school fundraiser, reveals her unexpected to
- 6:03Speaker 1: give her teaching Majong, which sparks the connection with Ben,
- 6:07Speaker 1: a charming contractor whose family could use a little healing.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Okay, there's a lot to talk about.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, First, let's address the other co stars in this movie,
- 6:17Speaker 1: Crystal Low to Maramo, Riehausley, and Melissa Peterman. That's a
- 6:21Speaker 1: cast that I'm very excited about. Me too. This movie
- 6:25Speaker 1: has come under fire for whitewashing. I acknowledge that you
- 6:30Speaker 1: and I are two white ladies sitting at a kitchen table,
- 6:32Speaker 1: right and I am not the person to have the
- 6:34Speaker 1: opinion about this, but since we're here talking about it
- 6:37Speaker 1: on the podcast, it's not wrong for white women to
- 6:41Speaker 1: play and enjoy Magen. However, to make a movie about
- 6:45Speaker 1: Majong and Center a white couple perhaps we haven't seen
- 6:50Speaker 1: the movie.
- 6:51Speaker 2: They missed an.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Opportunity to share some heritage there. Yeah, but we're saying
- 6:56Speaker 1: maybe because we haven't seen the movie, we don't know.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Amy d tells correct. Nevertheless, the leads are super duper
- 7:04Speaker 1: white fair. I think I just think we should preserve
- 7:09Speaker 1: the criticism until we.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Know the facts.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I would like to point out an article. There's a
- 7:16Speaker 1: writer named ka El Connie Wang who wrote an article
- 7:18Speaker 1: for Parade. The article is titled I had a problem
- 7:21Speaker 1: with Hallmark's Majong movie until I understood this. We can
- 7:25Speaker 1: link the entire article. But she says, is this actually whitewashing?
- 7:30Speaker 1: It's not that simple. When the film was first announced,
- 7:33Speaker 1: many were quick to jump on the whitewashing bandwagon, including
- 7:36Speaker 1: Entertainment Weekly, which ran a piece about how tone def
- 7:39Speaker 1: the announcement felt. I admit that was my first reaction too,
- 7:42Speaker 1: she says. But as I learned more about the film,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I realized its underlying themes are similar to many of
- 7:48Speaker 1: Hallmark's core features love, romance, family, and friendship. What's sweet
- 7:53Speaker 1: about this film is it's a bit of a love
- 7:55Speaker 1: letter to the producer's wife, who is an expert on
- 7:58Speaker 1: American Majong and which is hundreds of people how to play.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Joel S.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Rice has produced multiple films for Hallmark, including the Science
- 8:05Speaker 1: Sealed Deliver series, and this film was inspired by his
- 8:08Speaker 1: wife's passion for the game. Ronnie Rice, which is the
- 8:12Speaker 1: main character's name, known as Marvelous Missus maj in American
- 8:17Speaker 1: Majong circles, taches class in the sport, both online and
- 8:20Speaker 1: in person. So this wasn't simply Hallmark capitalizing on a
- 8:25Speaker 1: moment because Majong is having a major cultural moment. Sure
- 8:30Speaker 1: there is some personal connection here, so I think there
- 8:33Speaker 1: are nuances in these conversations. But again, you and I
- 8:38Speaker 1: not necessarily people whose opinions matter the most. As to
- 8:40Speaker 1: the content of this movie, this is peak midlife content.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I mean, this is right in my lane.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Wendy's daughter is going to college this fall when he's
- 8:50Speaker 1: come in the middle of the college madness, and I'm
- 8:54Speaker 1: always looking for hobbies, and I have tweyed with this idea.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I would love to start a Majeen group. I gotta
- 9:03Speaker 2: stop you there.
- 9:04Speaker 1: My stepmother, I think at one time might have played,
- 9:07Speaker 1: but took a class taught like some lady came and
- 9:10Speaker 1: taught them. Could it have been Miss Mage, Yeah, I
- 9:14Speaker 1: want to.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Do that, could it? Do you know if they're local?
- 9:17Speaker 1: This Miss Mojo located in Encino, California, so local in
- 9:23Speaker 1: maybe my classes are taught at my home or by
- 9:25Speaker 1: arrangement privately, at yours. I mean, I would be willing
- 9:29Speaker 1: to drive to Nthino and Sino is far.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Okay, make a day out of it, Okay, I'll drive.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I don't hate it. I don't hate the idea. I
- 9:39Speaker 2: want a maeong lesson.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Look, I think we're going to relate to the content here.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Totally excited about this casting. God Melissa Cheeterman, I know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: love her. I can't wait for her jokes. I love
- 9:51Speaker 1: Crystal Low so very much. And I know she's been
- 9:54Speaker 1: going through a lot of personal stuff health wise, like
- 9:57Speaker 1: I love that she's working. She's been very openly navigating
- 10:02Speaker 1: her cancer journey. As much as I hate the word journey,
- 10:04Speaker 1: I don't know what.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Else to use. And she's been working throughout now and
- 10:10Speaker 2: this movie was made in the midst of that.
- 10:13Speaker 1: So you know what, I didn't remind cancer journey a
- 10:16Speaker 1: lot of nothing. Every time I see her, I'm like, girlfriend,
- 10:19Speaker 1: slow down, I know, take a break. Ultimately, I am
- 10:22Speaker 1: looking forward to watching this movie, and I hope, I
- 10:25Speaker 1: hope to be pleasantly surprised the same same, same, Next up,
- 10:37Speaker 1: Hannah s Winson's back for Best Served Cold A Hannah
- 10:40Speaker 1: s Wentson Mystery on Saturday May sixteenth. Of course, this
- 10:43Speaker 1: stars Alison Sweeney, Victor Webster, and Barbara Nivin. The synopsis
- 10:48Speaker 1: is when a suspect in a forgery case is murdered
- 10:50Speaker 1: and the prosecutor goes missing. Hannah and Chad must uncover
- 10:54Speaker 1: how the two cases are connected and solve them in
- 10:57Speaker 1: time for the trial. Why is Chad trying to uncover anything?
- 11:02Speaker 1: He is the district attorney.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't know. He is not the police detective. Neither
- 11:08Speaker 2: is Hannah.
- 11:09Speaker 1: True, but Hannah gets like the green light from the actual,
- 11:15Speaker 1: you know, chief of police. Evidently, this is the fourteenth
- 11:20Speaker 1: movie in this franchise. Ooh, I like your question here.
- 11:23Speaker 1: What does longevity like that say about Hallmark's mystery audience.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I think it says that people enjoy Hannah, but fourteen movies.
- 11:31Speaker 2: People like what they like.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I think there's a reason why Hallmark shows endless reruns
- 11:35Speaker 1: of The Gilmore Girls. Well that too, But of the
- 11:37Speaker 1: Golden Girls on their channel. I don't think Hallmark viewers
- 11:41Speaker 1: like the Golden Girls. Well, then somebody's got to be
- 11:44Speaker 1: watching it. They have to be making their money back.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I guess you think they're tired of the Golden Girls
- 11:49Speaker 1: who regular Hallmark fans. I see them bitch about it
- 11:51Speaker 1: on Reddit all day long. Yeah, they want they want
- 11:55Speaker 1: Hallmark reruns during the middle of the day. They do
- 11:57Speaker 1: not want Gilmore Girl. Well, by your tongue, Windy, Yeah,
- 12:00Speaker 1: they don't like Gilmore Girls either, a whole lot.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I think if Hallmark was twenty four to seven, they
- 12:06Speaker 1: would love it. I'm gonna need some movement on the
- 12:09Speaker 1: Hannah and Chad front in this movie. Let's get married
- 12:11Speaker 1: already at this point? Nice something. We can't just bring
- 12:16Speaker 1: me the heat.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Can't we just doing this dance all time? No, we can't.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Like, Hannah's had two relationships where she's Cameron Matheson character, right,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and now now she's with Chad the Victor.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Webster character.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Hannah deserves happiness at some point, So let's let's get there.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Let's get there, Let's get there.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I don't think we're going to see Norman in this movie. Oh,
- 12:39Speaker 1: he was busy over on the way home.
- 12:41Speaker 2: What a shame.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And I don't say that with sarcasm.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I love Norman me too.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I really like the character of Norman quite a bit.
- 12:50Speaker 1: No director, no additional information. We have a costume designer.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Are you ready for the next one?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 12:57Speaker 1: Finally true just an ip and eye. This is the
- 13:02Speaker 1: second movie in the True Justice franchise. Premiers May twenty third.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Katherine McNamara returns, Nikki de Looach, Benjamin Ayers. The writers
- 13:15Speaker 1: on this, guys, I'm telling you, I'm learning the same
- 13:18Speaker 1: time you're learning. Nikki Deloache and Megan McNulty. They write
- 13:22Speaker 1: together on other things, but I didn't realize that they
- 13:25Speaker 1: were the Did they write the first one too? True
- 13:28Speaker 1: Justice Family Ties was written by Nikki, also wrote True
- 13:32Speaker 1: Justice three Lost Love.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Okay, all right, all right, let me get onto the synopsis.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yeah. When Sharon Warner, president of Penn Charter's Parent School Coalition,
- 13:43Speaker 1: is convicted of vehicular homicide as a fellow PSC member,
- 13:49Speaker 1: the Justice Warriors go undercover at a prestigious high school
- 13:53Speaker 1: to exonerate a wrongly convicted wife. Moller and passionate student
- 13:57Speaker 1: advocate whoa This sounds like a deep story. What's interesting
- 14:02Speaker 1: is the IMDb synopsis is different. Amateur sleuths tackle a
- 14:06Speaker 1: fresh challenge at a local school, diving into the fierce
- 14:08Speaker 1: world of parent politics. I mean similar, just from a
- 14:13Speaker 1: different different angle there. We recently saw MARKI Ntruciik in
- 14:17Speaker 1: The Nelly Knows Mysteries, the recent installment of that, playing
- 14:20Speaker 1: the same character, which is interesting, like the worlds are
- 14:22Speaker 1: the same. I wonder if we'll see any other cameo
- 14:25Speaker 1: crossover from that world. I don't know, but I think
- 14:27Speaker 1: this movie has been done for a long time.
- 14:30Speaker 2: I think so too.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Didn't they film the second and third one back to back? Yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and we're just dropping them.
- 14:36Speaker 2: It's the mystery thing.
- 14:37Speaker 1: This we're with Hallmark is so weird to me because
- 14:40Speaker 1: they keep we did this back in March, I think,
- 14:42Speaker 1: where we dropped two mysteries and back to back in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the month, and now we're dropping three. Why are we
- 14:47Speaker 1: not just doing one mystery a month and rolling them
- 14:51Speaker 1: out that way? I don't know a good question, because
- 14:53Speaker 1: then we have some months like April no mysteries. I
- 14:56Speaker 1: just think it's interesting. I don't know the planning behind that.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Perhaps perhaps it's when they because May.
- 15:02Speaker 2: For Moms is the theme for May. But I'm not
- 15:06Speaker 2: really sure any of this really fits. Like the first two.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Movies, yes do, but these three not so much. Except
- 15:14Speaker 1: the mom gets arrested for sure. Yeah, I mean you could,
- 15:17Speaker 1: you could make that leap.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Sure, I don't know.
- 15:21Speaker 1: It feels like they're just it feels like they're using
- 15:23Speaker 1: the mysteries as filler for a month when they don't
- 15:27Speaker 1: have enough to fit the theme right, and don't do that.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Mysteries deserve their own recognition. And yeah, I like the
- 15:35Speaker 1: idea of putting put one mystery a month in the
- 15:38Speaker 1: regular lineup. We don't need to be so tied to
- 15:41Speaker 1: like the themes every month. Just put out good content.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all right. Finally this month we have Haunted
- 15:50Speaker 1: Harmony Mysteries Key to the Castle on Saturday, May thirtieth,
- 15:55Speaker 1: starring to Marimo, Ree Housley, Restarred Cooper and Marco Grizzini
- 15:59Speaker 1: are Love Triangle. When a ghost Hunter show comes to town.
- 16:03Speaker 1: It's up to Gethsemane and Amen to solve the unexpected
- 16:07Speaker 1: murder of the host, allowing the brand new spirit to
- 16:10Speaker 1: cross over.
- 16:11Speaker 2: It's really giving ghost whisper so I've never seen that show.
- 16:16Speaker 1: It's so good. But you know, all of these feature
- 16:20Speaker 1: a ghost that needs help crossing over.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that, so do I. I'm more interested
- 16:27Speaker 2: in this case.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I'm more interested in those mysteries than I am in
- 16:31Speaker 1: our love triangle. Like I like Guests, Semony and Amen together,
- 16:35Speaker 1: aim In the Ghost, Aim and the Ghost. Yeah, but yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that's not possible. No, No, I don't mean I like
- 16:40Speaker 1: them together in a relationship. I like them working together.
- 16:43Speaker 1: They're fun to lecture, their chemistry, yeah, vibes together, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 16:47Speaker 1: yeahah yes. I like them as a team, not romantically.
- 16:50Speaker 1: You don't care about the Marco Grissini kind of.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I mean, Marco Grissini's fine, he's nice to look at.
- 16:57Speaker 1: You know. In the last episode, I was leaning a
- 17:00Speaker 1: little bit more towards Inspector O'Reilly. Yeah, who's on this
- 17:05Speaker 1: movie poster?
- 17:06Speaker 2: Both of them?
- 17:06Speaker 1: I sure hope Inspector o'reiley is see the only person
- 17:10Speaker 1: on the movie poster with Tamara Murray Housley is Aimin. Oh,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and then there's a castle behind them and a ghostly
- 17:18Speaker 1: music note.
- 17:19Speaker 2: What's interesting. I don't know if there's anything to this,
- 17:22Speaker 2: but back.
- 17:23Speaker 1: In March, where we had. There are two movies. We
- 17:26Speaker 1: had Ali Sweeney and two movies that month. This month
- 17:28Speaker 1: we have Tamara Murray Housley in two movies this month.
- 17:31Speaker 1: What's your overall impression of the month. There's none of
- 17:34Speaker 1: these that I'm like, oh, like, they'll sounds fine. There's
- 17:37Speaker 1: some that I'm fine excited about. Yeah, there's some that
- 17:39Speaker 1: I think will be okay. What mystery of the three?
- 17:42Speaker 1: Are you looking forward to? The most true?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Just this same?
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we really liked that setup, that Scooby Gang of
- 17:48Speaker 1: it all. Yeah, I like the small role played by
- 17:50Speaker 1: Nicki and Benn. If you had to rank these in
- 17:53Speaker 1: order of the five, one being the one you're most
