- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Kitchener.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: This is your hookup, and I have a lovely guest with you today.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm absolutely loving her brand, and I cannot wait to dive into all of the um background and the story.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: But without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to Kabita Sahai, who is the founder of Kate Sahai.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Kavita.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to host you.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much, Dr.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I appreciate you having me here.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm really, really um excited and I really love um the products I've tried uh by the brand.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And I can't wait to learn about, you know, just the thought that went behind all of that.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: But I really want to start with your journey and your uh background.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: If you could share that with us, that'd be great.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: It's kind of uh non-traditional in the sense that I actually started in mergers and acquisitions in defense and aerospace and then went on so super different.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and then went on to do uh private equity and technology, and then did consumer products turnaround.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And then during that time, I think just the amount of hours I was working started to take a toll on my health and uh how I looked as a result of that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So I went to the doctor, of course, and I'm related to 30 because I'm Indian, but um my skin tests and everything um showed completely normal.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, then a friend introduced me to a botanist who introduced me into the world of essential oils.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: All I'd really heard of it was sort of the MLM route, but she was crafting these pre-made formulas that were ready to use.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And because I think I had a lot of gut issues, the oils bypassed that and got right into my system.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: And so then this became a passion once I started to feel better.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And my son actually at the time was in and out of the hospital for reactive airway, and you know, we used it with him.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: And also within six months, he was off prescription meds.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: So it's like, what are these oils?
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: And so that that started me into oils from a wellness journey.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And then from there, I went on to think about, you know, what have I always seen, you know, my family using in India or I even lived in the Middle East.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Like what I normally saw people using were just oils.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: And so I didn't really understand the seven to 10 step systems.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: And that's where my research and study into face oils began.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: That is so interesting that you say that because I'm Indian as well, and I feel like we have such a culture around the use of oils.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Like we have such a rich culture.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: You know, I know a lot of people talk about Ayurveda a lot nowadays, and it's kind of become a buzzword, which, you know, I have my own feelings about that.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: You know, um, I feel like we grew up in this like culture of just, you know, for example, like coconut hair oil, you know, for hair scalp massaging and you know, ailments and joints.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I see my mother still using them.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So that's so interesting.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, kind of how you tied that in.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: It's very interesting.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just I was like it's worked for them.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I think it's it's come full circle from a hundred years ago, which is all that people use for oils and and now it's in vogue again.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, totally.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I I I see it all the time.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And I think um oils is such an interesting um area, honestly, if I'm for me as a consumer, I won't lie, because I remember um about five, ten, maybe five, six years ago is when I really got into them for my skincare.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And it was really fascinating because I always thought that oils were, I was a typical consumer, you know, I thought oils would clog my pores and make my acne worse, and it will just be a hot mess.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But I remember the first time I ever tried oil was like a marula oil, and it just was completely the opposite.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So, like, you know, I kind of got turned on to it, but I want to actually learn from you.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you had mentioned a couple of um examples, you know, that you experienced that kind of led you into this, but it specifically for the skin, you know, what were some of your early experiences with oils that kind of um, you know, sparked your interest and wanted to, you know, made you want to go down this road?
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I started with, you know, some of the general oils that are you can marula oil as well as mixes of oils from different companies that had blends.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And one of the things I realized is my skin reacted differently than someone else's, even though we both had dry skin, for example.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: So my friend and I had dry skin and marula oil was amazing for her, but really an almond oil worked better for me.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And so that's what kind of got me curious into the custom oils.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And part of this has to do with the fact that all of us have um different transdibial water loss.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So that's different skin by skin.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And that really depends on your ethnicity and where you're from.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: And in Mother Nature's great wisdom, the plants and botanicals that grow where you're from are actually best for you.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And that's about me.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that custom route where I was like, okay, well, you can have dry skin, but if you're African versus Indian, there might be a different oil that could be better served for you.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: That's so interesting because I feel like it's also about like the way certain oils smell too, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know, can correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like, especially with the cultural piece that you just said, I feel like there's a lot of tie-in with how your body reacts, even from that scent route, you know.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Um, I know that a lot of times products that are fully oil-based, for me, it just really depends on like it there might be no scent, but if there is a scent, like it really plays in holistically in a way, you know, to how I'm feeling and how my skin responds to it as well.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: It's weird.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: It's like a well, I think it's your whole body and soul and mind will react and that'll come up on your skin.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And I think the plants and things you're smelling have a grounding effect if they resonate with you, which often they'll resonate from you again if they're where you're from.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, that makes sense.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Um, so I really want to know, you know, because uh this is very interesting.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, in terms of like um some of the differences, like maybe you can dive into them a little bit more because obviously we all know we have very different skin, all of us, you know, and I think ethnicity definitely plays a role and it's something that we don't really get to talk about a lot in the beauty industry.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: About, you know, I think about two years ago I had this conversation with somebody where I was like, you know, darker skin tones are very different.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: You know, we need to get on board with this conversation because, you know, we have different needs.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So um, I you could dive into that a little bit, you know, in terms of like specific concerns that you've noticed, like maybe like Indian or you know, darker, like brown skin tones face versus more Caucasian, like something you've encountered along this journey.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: That that'd be great.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: And I'll tell you the first concern for me when I came into it was hyperpigmentation, which is something that's very common with um darker skin tones.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: And a lot of what was being prescribed, like retinol, is it can really exasperate that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Whereas if you substitute it with a plant oil like bacteria, which I actually had in your blend that we sent to you, um, it's really amazing to help do all the same things of renewing collagen, improving skin tone texture, but it's a much safer alternative, um, especially for people who have hyperpigmentation, but also even acne or sensitive skin.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So that's sort of that example of switching an ingredient that's more friendly to people of color.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And I, by the way, I love my I love my oil blend.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: It's really, really nice.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah, and and you know what's crazy, what got me is when I first got, and I'm very skeptical.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I just want to preface like very skeptical about oils because for me it's kind of a hit or miss.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I'm that kind of consumer when it comes to oil-based products.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: But like I feel like I can immediately tell like if my skin is gonna like it.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And I remember when I first tried it, um, and just for everyone listening out there, um, you know, when you first open a product and you initially test it on your hand or something, I was like, oh yeah, this is nice because it's like my blend is like a perfect, I feel like it feels like a dry oil, but it's still nourishing enough to where I feel like my skin is getting something from it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And that's always been a pain point for me personally.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And I feel like you guys just nailed it, you know, it's like it wasn't too light to where it felt like what did I even put on my face?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: You know, like do I have anything?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: But it was light enough to where I didn't feel like it was weighed down, which is also a problem I've had as a consumer where oils really weigh my skin down, usually, you know?
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: And so I don't know how you did it, but it you really nailed it with mine.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: I really, really enjoy mine.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And if we hadn't, we would have reformulated it because we do do that if if for some reason we're off the mark.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: But again, I think it really comes down to oils and really most face products are in such small bottles when you think about it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: And so if everything in that bottle is not really for you, it's it's taking up very valuable space.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: You know, absolutely love that you said that.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's why I really feel like the custom, the movement towards custom skincare is so important because again, we're paying a lot of money for a very tiny bottle.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: And so everything in that bottle should be fresh, it should be potent, and it should be just what you need.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So that I want to know, like, you know, in terms of oils, what is the shelf life for oils?
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Because we don't ever talk about that.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I know they it takes longer, right, for them to like, I guess, reach an expiration date or something.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Like, how does that, if you could educate us a little bit around that?
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Um and every oil is different, but I would say um you're very safe usually within a year of opening oil, that it's going to be um fresh and safe.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: The the issue is not so much um when you open it, it's when it was created, right?
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: How long has it been sitting on the shelf?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: That's where you start to lose some of the potency because someone's gonna manufacture it, then they're gonna sit, you know, ship it, then they're gonna send it, it's gonna sit on a shelf till someone buys it.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: And so sometimes you're not actually the product isn't reaching the end consumer until maybe 18 months to two years out.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: That's so interesting because isn't it?
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: See, I'm very confused also because like I never understand like how the whole process is with like extracting oils and then bringing them to market and then bringing them, you know, from a manufacturing standpoint, like to the you know, the brand or whoever is utilizing it, like that whole time frame, you know.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I feel like oils for me, um, in my mind, it's just like it's like wine, you know what I mean?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Like they age with time, but I know that there is an extra opposite in the sense that wine gets better with age, but oils don't.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: That's good to know because I know a lot of us have products, you know what I mean, uh sitting on our shelves for a long time.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And I think a lot of times consumers look at oils and they're like, oh, that's fine.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't have to worry about that product, but that's good to know.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: That's what it is.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think it does absolutely it matters uh if you think about it, if the oil is fresh and um just like you want fresh plants and foods for your body, it's it's sort of that similar thing.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Your skin wants fresh plant oils.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: And so from the moment it's extracted, you know, and sent to your manufacturer for mixing, that's where small batches and small brands you're gonna end up getting fresher because they're gonna be refreshing that inventory more often, whereas a larger one might just go into production once a year, once every 18 months.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So I wanna I wanna shift gears a little bit because I know you guys have a whole process here in place, you know, from um when somebody goes onto your website.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: So for everyone listening, by the way, um I would love for you guys to check out the brand as we're chatting.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: So uh if you're listening in, you can type in K-S-A-H-A-I-K-Sahi.com and you can check out the website um as we're having this conversation here.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: But um, Kabisa, like, you know, I know on the website there's a quiz, and I would love for you to just walk us through that quiz and really why you created it and what it tells you, you know, about the customer when we're filling it out.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I created it and I tried to make it as short as possible.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I would love to have all the information about everybody, but I tried to make it just really what was important.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And so it's where, you know, again, it comes down to the ethnicity.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Where are you from?
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Um, because that'll tell me what the botanicals are.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: What type of skin do you have?
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Is it dry, oily combination?
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and then what are your skin concerns?
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Do you have acne, aging?
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Do you just need to glow?
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: What is it that you're trying to solve?
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: And what are your goals?
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And I feel like with that, I get a good sense of what you need.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: But then there's this other part, which is what are you feeling?
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Because again, when someone's really, really happy, their skin naturally glows.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Um and similarly, when they're really stressed, we produce a lot more oil and we have sort of that opposite reaction.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: And so that really does have to come into play in your formula as well.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: And that comes into the aromatherapy and scent piece.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Where if someone's really stressed, we do want to put a little bit of lavender or something in their oil so that when they're applying it, and hopefully they're doing it with an affirmation, it's going to help relax them, which in turn is going to help their skin relax and not produce as much oil.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: So it all works together.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: So it's really what is your skin type, concern, goal, where are you from, and where's your mindset?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: So it really it's about like in I'm thinking like in terms of the needs of your skin, it's it has a lot to do with like, you know, you kind of go off the major pathologies then, right?
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Like the acne and the okay, the dryness and stuff.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Because I know that there's see, this is the fascinating thing about oils, is that I am still trying to wrap my head around like what is good for, you know, I know like with redness, Lula oil is fantastic for me personally.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: I know a lot of people might be able to relate to it, but that's pretty much all I know.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: In terms of acne, I couldn't recommend anything because I have no idea.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Like with oils, I always I have this misconception in my mind from a long time that they make it worse, but clearly not, you know.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So what are some things?
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Like maybe you could give us some like kind of eye-opening, like factoids, you know, around it, because I think a lot of people have these misconceptions.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: And so, from your experience, like what are some like for example, like examples of oils that you've seen to fix like like acne or rosacea or something, or you know, be really great for those kind of conditions.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: So rosacea, I would say, is very tricky.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: So I don't necessarily um play with that as much, but with acne, really acne is a lot of times our skin creating more oil than it needs, which it's which it's doing because it's sensing that we need it.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: So that's where the misconception of if we put oil on our skin, it actually helps to even out and our it'll help the skin to recognize like, oh, I don't need that oil, it's already there, I don't have to produce more.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Rose hip oil is actually a great oil for people with acne, uh, especially if they're South American, that's something native to that area, and it's it's one of those incredible oils.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Um, a little bit of tea tree oil is also really great to mix in.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: For acne, um, that's another really great one.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: So depending again where you're from, what's your skin type, but those are those are some really great oils.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I've heard of uh definitely, I mean, I've heard of both of them, but like tea tree for sure.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I think there was another brand that I had interviewed in, like, they're an acne brand.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: So I do recognize uh tea tree oil from their um, you know, their lineup.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, that's really interesting.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: And you know, in terms of like uh like for example, like I had mentioned like dry oils versus like the more heavier ones, like what is like what makes an oil like a dry oil?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Like what what is that?
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And and these terminologies, like I feel like I get so lost in that verbiage.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: So I think what they're really talking about is it, is it, um, and I'm and my pronunciation is going to be terrible, but comnogenic.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: So how how clogging is it?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And then really it's how it feels.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: So an oil that absorbs quickly is considered a dry oil.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Whereas if you like to have a little bit of the feeling of it on your skin or use it, I use face oil as a primer as well.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Then you maybe wouldn't want a dry oil.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Like you want it to be a little bit moist.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Makes sense.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: So that yeah, that clarifies it for me because I swear I I literally like for some reason with this category in skincare, my mind goes completely blank and I start overthinking everything.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: So that's why I'm asking you all these like questions because drying oil is not really like a you know, like it's not a scientific term in that sense, it's just literally like the feeling.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay, cool.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I mean that's how people label things, unfortunately.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, a lot of brands, and a lot of times when we go to the drugstore or we go to Sephora, wherever, a lot of times that's kind of what we're working with.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: So I hope uh someone out there can relate to my complete, you know, confusion around it.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: But that's really cool.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it's good.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, people know do they want an oil that's quick and it's gone, or do they want one that like a little bit lingers on their skin so that they feel hydrated?
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Exactly, exactly.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that's one of the big questions I do have that uh on the issue of hydration.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Now, I've heard about like a lot of you know, a lot of perspectives on this.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: I think that um there's a lot of confusion around the term moisture, you know, and like keeping moisture in your skin or somehow hydrating your skin.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: I would love to get your perspective on this, you know, when it comes to oils.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Um, how do they really play into the whole you know grand scheme of things when it comes to skin hydration and really retaining it and maintaining that level uh for our skin as compared to like a moisturizer, you know what I mean?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: So right.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So oils are actually amazing for that very thing, especially if you you know you put it on right after you wet your skin, because that really seals the moisture in versus lotion.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you're drawing the moisture out.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: And so that's where I love oils as this uh final layer, maybe right before your SPF, to seal in the hydration um into your skin.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I mean, I think that's yeah, because a lot of times I've I see people using oils as the last step in their routine, and that's I think because of what you what you mentioned, which is this idea of really sealing things in and making sure that's the last layer.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: But so I'm not gonna lie to you, I feel like it for me as a consumer, it becomes redundant because, for example, the oil blend that you sent me, I can use this by itself.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I don't need anything under it, to be honest.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Because if I put too many things under my oils, for me, I get peeling of my products.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: So to me, it becomes like redundant.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Like, why would I even do that?
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes oils, I mean, and that's really why I asked you is like an oil can be enough.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: You know, it doesn't have to be the stigma around it to where, oh no, an oil is just like a finishing step and a routine.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: No, it can be an all-in-one, you know, a great skincare product that is just doing what you need it to do.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Like I know you had mentioned earlier, like um, in reference to like retinol or vitamin A derivative products, you know, there's a lot of like, you know, there's so much confusion out there, but I think a lot of times oils are a really great pathway to creating these, like, you know, resources for your actives and whatever else you might need in your routine and having it all in one.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So no, I can tell you that I I use oil to clean my skin, moisturize, um really and be a primer before makeup.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: The only thing I add is sunscreen, but I've always been just oils and it's really what I've seen work best for my skin type and it within my own family.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: So that's it really can be a one and done.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So now when you like when somebody goes onto your website, they take the quiz, they um, you know, kind of fill in their information.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: What is the process like on your end?
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: So creating that um, you know, the custom blend and what is the process like that takes place, you know, scientifically or you know, just from the thought process.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: So we did build some uh programming on the back end.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: So based on your answers, we get a formula that's been spit out, and all our formulas have been basically the entire formulation for it has been checked out by Kate KT consultants.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: Um is Krupa and she's on the Credo Clean Beauty because we wanted to make sure again, I'm I'm big on third-party testing.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: So all our oils are third-party tested for purity, and we published that on our website, as well as I wanted to make sure the formulations equal were equally safe and accepted.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: So once it goes through that formulation, we get it, and then the you know, the it's assembled and and created.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Usually within a week, we can get everyone's oils out from our manufacturing facility.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, so how about like what what is it like in terms of the sourcing and stuff?
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, do you guys have like already a set?
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Like how many oils do you really have, like in the in the warehouse, if you were to say, you know, like is it like 500 different types of oils or yeah?
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: It's um so we small batch it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: So we have very we work with artisans all around the world and we have small batches of oils.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: And because we also have our wellness side of the business, it's a lot there's overlap in some of those oils as well.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: But we get um we small batch it and then we have our own um process for in which we you know we know when we need to reorder more oils for any you know given specific one.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: We usually know what the popular ones are, so that's that's where we have to do it.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: But yeah, inventory management can definitely be a challenge.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I mean I I I can't imagine, you know, because you guys are all oil-based.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: So I'm just curious, like how many different oils, you know, do you have to pick from?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: And also, like also a question I have is how does the um, you know, the like I guess the ratios, how does that work?
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: How do you calculate that?
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Like how much of what goes into a blend?
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: It really, again, varies by person.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, your your um essential oils are gonna be a small percentage of it as well as your vitamin C, vitamin E, any of those more potent oils are gonna be uh less than you know, a percent or two percent, probably the formulation in total.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: But I can't say that we have a set, it's not like on our wellness side, we have a very set 95% of our oil is jojoba oil, organic jojoba oil, and then 5% is the essential oils.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: But with the face oils, it really is um a different ratio of whether we're trying to work on the concern.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Or the oil that's best suited from where you're from.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: And if they're different, then we have two different oils.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And so then that ratio kind of gets cut in half.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: That sounds like a really cool process, like from the back side of things, like just to, you know, put it together and put the customization piece, you know, into every single product that you sell.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's really, really neat.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 22:23unknown: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad you guys are doing it.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: It's it's really fun.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: And I think from it we're getting really good feedback too, where we can continually be improving on our formulations.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: No, I mean it's great.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I mine is, I mean, you nailed it on the first try.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I love mine, um, my oil blend.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And I I like what you said about the under Yeah, I mean, it's it's lovely.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: And I and I think with the under the makeup piece, you really got me there because I use um I I mean I use your oil like as my last step or my only step for what you know, depending on my day, but then my makeup slides on very smoothly.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: It's really nice.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: And for me personally, as a consumer, for everyone listening out there, I don't know if you can relate, but I have a little bit of acne scarring.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: So for me, a big pain point has always been um, you know, these little scars that I always want to like cover with my makeup.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And a lot of times it does depend on what is the primer that I'm using, you know, what how am I uh preparing my skin for my makeup?
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: And that really will dictate, you know, does my skin look the way I want it to look with that airbrushed look?
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And oils are awesome as primers, like if it's the right one, rather.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: I should say that, you know, if it's the right oil.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but you're this is such a great product um from that standpoint and from that perspective, because I think that's kind of even when we think about makeup, a lot of times people get stuck on that priming step.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: And I it's funny because I asked, I remember Mario uh came onto my show for makeup by Mario, and I had asked Mario, I'm like, what is the prep step like for your makeup, you know, for your clients when you're doing makeup?
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: And you know, and he would say it, he's like, it just depends, but you know, a lot of times their skin is already well prepped.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And I think a lot of that really plays in, you know, to how your makeup's gonna stay on, the way it's gonna look, the way it's gonna feel.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: And I think oil is just it's brilliant to use it as that step, you know, right before you put on foundation or concealer or whatever it is.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: So um, I love that you said that.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Um, so I I want to actually ask you, and I think this is from the standpoint of like, you know, you uh had made a great point earlier about the idea of customizing skincare, you know, and I think we are finally there as an industry.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm seeing a lot more brands pop up that are really um, you know, championing this uh concept forward, um, including yours.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I I love it.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: I'm here for it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: Um, I guess one of my biggest questions really is though, what are some of the challenges for you, you know, as a business owner in this space?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Because I'm it must be hard, you know, if if everything is customized.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: It is hard.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: Um to, well, there's two things.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: One, you automatically become only a D2C brand.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: So you can't go into stores because you're doing custom.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So that's hard.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: And I think you nailed it on the head when you talked about inventory and the oils that we have to keep.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: It's not like we have a standard formula.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Every time someone's formula comes in, it's a little different.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: It has to be formulated and made and sent.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: And so there's definitely a lot more time.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: It's a lot more handcrafted.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: But I also think it just means we're going back to doing business how we used to, which was a little bit more smaller batch, a little fresher, a lot less wasteful versus mass production that's targeted to just one person.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: No, that makes sense.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, honestly, I think um when we look at skincare right now, it is really a hit or miss because, like you said, it's targeted at one person.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And everyone wants to say, well, no, this works for everybody, but that's just not possible.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: It's not, it doesn't make sense.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: So um, no, I mean, I've I've sorry go ahead.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: No, sorry, go ahead.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: You were cutting out.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: I didn't hear you.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: No, that's I was just gonna say, I think it also gives up everyone the opportunity to feel seen in beauty because I know that was another thing when I go to stores, I just didn't feel like anything was for me.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And now you are seeing a lot more with, like you said, the Ayurvedic skincare, which I could then say, okay, that's a little bit more for me.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: But I really do think that this gives everyone opportunity, despite whatever background, because a lot of times people are from different, a lot of different countries, it's not just one, to feel like, oh, this is really for me.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, I think that's so important too now because I mean, beauty is so much more than just, you know, a great product.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: It's also about fitting in and feeling like you have a space for your concerns.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, I think that's huge, especially, you know, being Indian myself, I totally know, you know, what that feels like as well.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I think a lot of us felt like that growing up.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know um if you agree or not, but growing up, it just felt like, you know, it didn't feel like we had a space.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: It didn't feel like anything really resonated.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: It was either like, you know, the products were made for really like different types of skin.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I remember um with my acne concerns, for example.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, I had acne.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you did growing up, but like for me, it was like kind of cystic acne and it runs in my family.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: And I remember going to the drugstore and feeling like there's nothing here for me, you know, like I can't use this stuff.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: It doesn't work, or it makes me break out even worse.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: And at that age, you don't know why that's happening, but it really does matter.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: You know, the point that you made where it has to be kept in mind where people originate from, you know, where are our origins and what kind of, you know, environmental uh things are gonna come into play, whether that's the plants and the the you know, the flora of that region that you're from, like it all of that plays a role.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: You know, your environment, um, the humidity levels, all of these things, and no one was talking about it back then.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: So now I feel like we've done such, like we've had such huge progress in that sense where we've created safe spaces, we've created this landscape of innovation and you know, science forward thinking rather than just, hey, this is another big monopoly type of brand coming out with 15 more products, you know?
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: So I really like that.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: And I that's why I'm so much here for the idea of you know, customized skincare.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: It's absolutely necessary, I think, at this point.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm a huge fan.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: I love what you're doing.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank you.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: I'm so happy.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, I for me it wasn't acne, it was hyperpigmentation.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: And that that didn't even exist in uh, you know, when I was younger in a drugstore.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: There, they were just like, What do you mean?
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I don't know why you have uneven skin tone.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Nobody has uneven skin tone, right?
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: So uh it was it's just not it wasn't a problem that most Caucasian people faced, and therefore it wasn't in beauty.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: And I do think we've done, we've come a long way into addressing that, but I still think we have a ways to go.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I I think it's definitely you know reflecting.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And I I really love what you've done with the brand.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And I and I love that you're doing it from your perspective.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I really do.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it so much because at the end of the day, I want to know that the products I'm using, like as a consumer, and I know a lot of people can relate to it, you want to know who's behind them.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: You want to know that the person that is behind the thought actually understands you and can relate to you in some way.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that goes such a long way.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: You know, I've sometimes I always I joke around and I'm like, you know, with some with some beauty concerns, some vanity concerns, it's always about placebo in some, you know, in some form up to a certain point.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: And I think a lot of that has to do with the cultural aspect, you know what I mean?
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Like, do I believe in this?
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: Do I believe in these products?
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Do I believe in the message?
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: And and sometimes when we do believe in it, it will show us better results, you know, because you're able to resonate with it on a whole, you know, holistic level rather than just okay, I'm gonna try another product, you know, and hope to God that it works.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's huge.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: It's huge.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I think you're what you're talking about is manifestation, right?
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: So if you believe, right, it will happen.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: And that's why we really work on the affirmations and we actually have a whole self-care piece if people are interested in that, you know, go with it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: But it's because the more you can believe and take time to care and love for your skin and show your skin love in that nurturing way rather than just sort of slapping different products and and and running, I do think it makes a really, really big difference.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to actually have I have a request for you as a fan of the brand.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I would love to see you guys uh kind of attack the category of like um, you know, like arthritis and like the joint the joints and like pains like that.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Because I swear oils are like miracles for things like that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Like they work so well.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: I've heard at least I've heard No, I have a miracle oil for it.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: It's called muscle.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: If you yeah, if you have that issue, I'll send it to you.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: It's it's within minutes you feel the difference.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: It's got oh my god, yes.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, I will send it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, yeah.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: No, I I wouldn't want to try that because that's something that I hear my patients complain about all the time as well.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: You know, people who um usually I'm seeing it's never, you know, it's never anything else.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: It's always like, well, you know, I've got this pain in my knees, and I'm like, I don't know what to tell you.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, and rather than giving them a prescription, I'm always all for trying different things.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I would definitely love to check that out.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: And I guess that's good to know, you know.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad you said that.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: That's funny.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I whenever I'm at a show, a trade show, or anything, anyone who complains about arthritis pain, I'll just have them sample it and within minutes the whole thing is sold out for that particular thing because it's quick, it's a really quick um relief.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Like you'll feel it immediately.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, here we go.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: We have uh really, really great product outside of just facial skincare.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think you need you should expand on it though, even still.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Like, if you've done that oil, you should do more because we need more of it.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: And I know like there are such a huge need for it right now because I kid you not, from a doctor's perspective, when it comes to like joint pains and stuff.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know this already, I'm sure.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Like, we can't do anything except give you medication, you know, and that is half the time that medication is really bad for your body, like overall.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't want to be on this stuff for a long time.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: So if you can find something like a really great oil that works, I mean, hey, please do it, you know, like do whatever work.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: So we have one for we have it for stress, we have it for sleep, we have it for pain, detox, headache, and focus.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we have seven different ones, they're coordinated to the different chakras of the body, so it also helps with energy healing.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, no, natural wellness is big.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of why I got into face oils in the beauty world as well as for the medicinal, it's just what you said.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Everything has side effects.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Fragrance messes with our hormones, all the different chemicals that we're constantly exposing ourselves to hurts our systems, you know, all of our systems.
- 32:34unknown: Right.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: And that's why it's so important to switch, you know, again, to eat natural foods and have natural products on your body and as much natural wellness as you can.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: And I think that it really kind of shows in the long run as well, you know, because um, you know, when we are talking about all of these, even outside of the pharmaceutical realm and we're talking about a lot of the things that we utilize, they have you know, things that they're broken down to that are actually the things that cause damage to those molecules.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: So we don't think about that on a day-to-day level.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: But when you're using something that is naturally derived, it's you know, it's clean, it's it's good for you, it comes from a plant, you don't have those problems.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, right now it's interesting because I feel like the the landscape is shifting a bit, you know.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Before we were talking about like natural beauty and organic beauty and clean beauty in a whole different light than we are now.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: And I think now it's even more important to shed light on how scientifically valid these kind of angles are, you know, when it comes to creating products.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: And I think you guys are a great example of that because, you know, like you said, your oil works, you know what I mean?
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: It actually cures the pain of the arthritis that they're feeling.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: And that's something that, you know, normally we would have in in a lab or in a medical setting, you would have like 15 journal articles, you know, trying to explain why.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: But sometimes you just don't know the exact reason yet.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: You know, we haven't figured it out.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: But that doesn't mean we negate it, you know, you have to like put your, you know, trust into that and really actually try to understand that this does work, you know, as compared to some of the pseudo-drugs that we have on the market that are causing more harm than good.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: So it's it's a huge topic.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: But and it's pharma owns that, right?
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: So the reason the research is not being done is because it's not as profitable as it is pharmaceuticals.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: So that's where it's really hard.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: But we do on our site link to as many scientific articles as people are interested in.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: So buy ingredient, you can look at the science.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: I'm really into sharing it, but there's there's definitely a disparity, you know, just not the same amount of research as there is for pharma drugs, unfortunately.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: But the proof isn't the pudding.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: You just have to try it.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the proof is in the pudding.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: No, I'm I'm, you know, I'm happy to testify to that.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: I really love the brand, and I think that, you know, the oil blend I have, I absolutely love it.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: It is for uh skincare.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: It's it's been working really well for me.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: I like I said, you know, I already shared my preferences for an oil, but I've really been enjoying it.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: And for anyone out there who does enjoy um a more oil-based approach to your skincare or even your wellness, I really suggest you guys check out the brand.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Um, again, it's ksahai.com, and you guys can check out everything there, including the wellness products that uh Kavita was talking about, are there as well.
