- 0:00You can milk anything, right? This week on that car show, we
- 0:05talk about what goes on in Vegas.
- 0:08Could be talked about in Vegas when Lindsay and Tori head out
- 0:12for a VW show with a difference. We talk about Ryan's ever ending
- 0:20quest to drive the Diablo, which is always just one step ahead of
- 0:24him. Maybe this week will be.
- 0:26The paradigm of reliability the. Paradigm of reliability.
- 0:31We also talk about coffee in Malibu and how LA racing for
- 0:35coffee vouchers could be. We talk about the end of an era
- 0:40when it comes to the VW Torag. Even though the car may not have
- 0:44been available in the US for a little while, it's now been
- 0:47retired worldwide. This is a car that won three
- 0:50Dacars, had a diesel V10. We're going to a little bit of
- 0:53detail around that. We also talk about up and coming
- 0:57articles that Ryan is going to be writing for for Autoblog
- 1:00account for some very interesting articles just around
- 1:04the corner. And and we close off the show
- 1:07with some thoughts around a competition.
- 1:10How could you win the next Sheffield watch?
- 1:12Well, you got to listen to the show.
- 1:14You'll find out how and it's pretty easy.
- 1:16So give us a lesson on that car show.
- 1:19That car show is brought to you by Sheffield Watches.
- 1:22Sheffield is the storied watchmaking brand that was
- 1:25revived a couple of years back by her good friend Jay Turkbus,
- 1:27and it's seen wild success in both the car and watch
- 1:30enthusiast communities. Sheffield offers a wide
- 1:33selection of watches, many inspired by the iconic designs
- 1:36of its 1960s dive models, most notably the one that Jay's
- 1:39appearance gave him in 1970, which ignited his lifelong
- 1:42passion for watches. Sheffield watches are high
- 1:45quality, reasonably priced and a great value.
- 1:47Sheffield has truly become the car guy and Cargill's watch of
- 1:51choice. What are your Sheffield watch at

- 2:05Welcome to this week's That Car Show.
- 2:07It's another crew show. The gang are back together.
- 2:11We've just been comparing notes on who are the board game
- 2:14champions and it sounds like for Bobble it's Lindsay and for
- 2:18Scrabble it is Ryan. I think I'm more of a Pictionary
- 2:21or charades person. Unless you get to say it the way
- 2:26that's fun for us charades. That's right.
- 2:28Before we get started, I wanted to give a big shout out to our
- 2:32listeners in South Africa. So we are currently sat at 37 in
- 2:36the South African podcast charts for automotive.
- 2:40So how's it brew? Let's have a bra.
- 2:44Open up a dot and we'll be around really shortly.
- 2:47So thanks everyone in South Africa.
- 2:49We appreciate you listening. Thank you for joining us, it's
- 2:53awesome. Yeah, so anyway, let's start
- 2:56with what goes on in Vegas. Actually, you could be told
- 3:00about in Vegas. Lindsay come back from Vegas for
- 3:03a specific show. That's right.
- 3:05What are you doing? This was 1 instance of what
- 3:08happens in Vegas, doesn't stay in Vegas.
- 3:10So it was a show called 1 Crazy Weekend and it celebrates
- 3:14Volkswagens in all their various forms and their enthusiasts.
- 3:18And the show has grown. I think this year it doubled in
- 3:21size. It's I believe it's about 5
- 3:23years old. And this year they had almost
- 3:26400 cars. So it was a big turn out and,
- 3:30you know, totally new for me because I've been in a different
- 3:32area of the car world. So it's fun to like kind of
- 3:35explore a different corner of the car community.
- 3:38And one of the fun things about this show is that it's at a
- 3:40hotel in Vegas and they take over the parking lot.
- 3:43And so the cars are staged in the parking lot.
- 3:45A lot of people get in Thursday, the event starts Friday.
- 3:48And one of the things that we were most looking forward to is
- 3:52you get to hang out with the cars and just kind of catch up
- 3:54with your friends and there's a little place you can go grab
- 3:58some adult refreshments should you feel so inclined and just
- 4:01kind of relax with the cars and catch up.
- 4:04So Lindsay, is this a Caesar's Palace type gathering?
- 4:07Is this like a circus circus type gathering?
- 4:09Or is this? Off the strip at a hotel called
- 4:13the Orleans and yeah, I mean it was Volkswagens of all forms.
- 4:18They had an amazing and I think it was a 21 window light pink
- 4:21and white bus that of course, you know, was in my immediate
- 4:24favorite outside of the family car, which was Tory built with
- 4:30Steve Connect, who was a like legend in the 80s building
- 4:34Volkswagens. They took a 1960 factory
- 4:38convertible and turned it into an 80s style roadster with
- 4:43actually kind of a Gunther Works style top over the back.
- 4:46That's what it is. I was trying to place it.
- 4:50That was the inspiration was the green speedster with the two
- 4:54kind of cargo areas behind the seats.
- 4:57That was the inspiration for the top on the roadster.
- 4:59So it was a car that had been started in the 80s and stalled
- 5:02out as a project and they found it.
- 5:06They were talking about it at the event last year and found it
- 5:09just after last year's event and transformed it.
- 5:12And now it is just the coolest little, you know.
- 5:16Tori described it as if it's a if a Trapper Keeper was a car.
- 5:19I mean, and obviously I'm dating myself with that reference, but
- 5:23a certain group of people will immediately know what I'm
- 5:26saying. It's a lot of neon and like tube
- 5:28design and just bright, really unique stuff.
- 5:31And it's a lavender car. And Steve hand airbrushed the
- 5:36neon tube design and the grid pattern, which was his
- 5:39signature. And it was really interesting,
- 5:42having been a kid in the 80s but not attended these shows, to see
- 5:47the 80s style display, which was color matched, you know, tennis
- 5:51balls and the engine, which is what they would do for display.
- 5:54So you wouldn't pull in particles because the cars are
- 5:56sitting there with the tubes open in the engine.
- 5:59Otherwise you a bunch of stuff could land in there and color
- 6:03matched carpet and mirrors underneath to display because
- 6:07they put as much thought into the the pan as they do to the
- 6:11visible stuff on top. So yeah, it was amazing.
- 6:14Her awards are the categories and awards or.
- 6:17Yes, there were. So there were like they had the
- 6:20heavy hitters category and that was a wide variety of cars that
- 6:24were selected and it was all different kinds.
- 6:26Like there was one that had amazing patina, one Beetle that
- 6:29had amazing patina and I think they won something.
- 6:33And then there was a bus that won and the awards were these
- 6:38amazing medallions with the logo of the show and they are so
- 6:42heavy. Do you have one handy?
- 6:47You just sent. Me a picture.
- 6:48I could go grab it. Yeah, play the Jeopardy theme
- 6:52and I'll go grab. It Lindsay got the bets.
- 6:54Was it flight? The flight.
- 6:56Yeah, it was along those along those ones, I think.
- 6:58I mean, I think it was, you know, done in, in, in fun.
- 7:02Yeah. But it's a hell of a hell of a
- 7:03thing to behold. I, you know, so.
- 7:06So if you don't know the name Tori, Tori is, is Lindsay's
- 7:09fiance. And and I am slowly peeling back
- 7:12the onion that is Tori. Look at this thing.
- 7:15Wow. I mean, come on, that's epic.
- 7:17Yeah. And it's heavy.
- 7:19That's what's so crazy. It's made from AVW.
- 7:23It is a salvage, yes. It's like this beautiful Teemu
- 7:27chain to compliment the medallion.
- 7:29So yes, obviously that's not why they did the car, but it was fun
- 7:33to have it be recognized. And yeah, I mean, it was blazing
- 7:38hot in Vegas, which was a nice change from the Pacific
- 7:41Northwest. And it's cool they set up there
- 7:45a bunch of, it's a weekend long event.
- 7:48And so they set up a bunch of different activities.
- 7:51And one of the highlights for us was they do a cruise along the
- 7:55Vegas Strip. So all of the cars that are
- 7:58drivable and the people that want to participate leave kind
- 8:01of en masse and go drive the strip all together.
- 8:04And my inaugural experience this year was more memorable than we
- 8:09had anticipated because right after we left the hotel, Tori
- 8:17goes, oh, the throttle just broke.
- 8:19And so the barrel nut had come out of the throttle cable, like
- 8:22the throttle cable came loose, barrel nut came off.
- 8:25So that is somewhere on the Boulevard that we had pulled off
- 8:28onto. So we were able to pull over,
- 8:31walk back because we were just a couple blocks from the hotel,
- 8:34walk back and take one off of a friend's car, walk back to our
- 8:38car, put it on, fix it, go do the cruise, and then come back.
- 8:41Wow, so if anyone finds Tori's barrel nut, could you please
- 8:45send it to Lindsay? Right.
- 8:47I can give you my mailing, my PO Box, but it was like such a
- 8:51quintessential VW experience of like, it's going to be exciting.
- 8:56And you know, and I know a lot of cars are like this, but sort
- 8:59of the interchangeability of like all like we know exactly
- 9:02what we need. We just can borrow 1 and then go
- 9:05to our activity and then bring it back.
- 9:07A couple couple comments questions.
- 9:08So as I was saying, when you were grabbing that giant, giant.
- 9:13Medallion. Medallion to end all medallion,
- 9:15Yeah. Yeah, Tori is really a figure
- 9:19right in the Volkswagen scene. I mean, like every time I turn
- 9:23around, like I find out some new achievement or whatever.
- 9:25And this car really was one of them because he put this thing
- 9:28together, I'm sure with your help and you know all that, but
- 9:31very, very. Quickly it was with.
- 9:32It was all Steve and Tori. I cannot take any credit for
- 9:35like. Weeks.
- 9:36It was a matter of weeks and and and and my big take away about
- 9:39Tori is so I'm from Chicago and Daniel Burnham, Chicago from
- 9:42Chicago know this phrase make no small plans and that's Tori.
- 9:45Like you know most. Of us would have like not seen
- 9:49that through you know and. No.
- 9:51Damn it, he did it. I don't know where he finds the,
- 9:53you know, the time in the day, but in it the car looked great
- 9:56and. It and it's and it's interesting
- 9:59because it's I think it photographs really well.
- 10:01Not all cars do, and you sort of lose a little bit in the
- 10:04pictures even as well as this car photographs.
- 10:07Seeing it in person and especially knowing, you know,
- 10:10kind of being along for the ride the last few months, I just
- 10:13seeing like a fraction of the work they put in.
- 10:17Getting to see it in person was really cool because there's an
- 10:19element of like, yeah, you've seen it in person or I've seen
- 10:21it in pieces and pictures, whatever.
- 10:23And to see it all put together, you kind of go like, wow, it's
- 10:27really real. And it actually does live up to
- 10:29what it looks like in the pictures and it's super cool.
- 10:32And then on top of that, he owns a car that was involved in the
- 10:38drag racing scene in LA called Bad Temper 2.
- 10:41And that was the one that we actually drove.
- 10:43So it was cool to get to experience that because it's
- 10:45such a piece of history from that period in time.
- 10:48So what's the status or the state of Vegas in 2025?
- 10:53You know, you hear about, you know.
- 10:54We're talking about that because there's a lot of talk about
- 10:58Vegas is dead. Uh huh.
- 11:00It was packed. Like it was absolutely packed.
- 11:02Don't believe what you read. Several, like, I can't even
- 11:05count how many times the light would turn green for us to go.
- 11:07And there were, like, pedestrian obstacles, you know, presenting
- 11:11themselves you. Sorry about certainly.
- 11:18No. In fact, I know someone that was
- 11:21there recently and they said the rooms were like crazy expensive.
- 11:24Yeah, I well, and I had a friend who goes there for work probably
- 11:28in the last six months, and she ended up staying like, well,
- 11:32outside of Las Vegas, she said. I've never run into this before.
- 11:34Las Vegas as a whole was sold out.
- 11:37Interesting. Wow.
- 11:38Like, I don't know how you do that.
- 11:39I never thought that could happen.
- 11:40I'll be there in just over a week for the SEMA show.
- 11:44Oh nice. Over the SEMA show.
- 11:46Yeah. Been a couple years for me, but
- 11:48that's a scene. I've never done it so.
- 11:51I haven't either. It's, it's just, it's, it's mind
- 11:55bogglingly just huge, right? Like it's every, it's every hall
- 12:00at the Conference Center and then some.
- 12:02And I think I've told you this, but we went a couple years ago
- 12:05and we thought we'd be smart and not stay in a casino, in fact,
- 12:09stay at the Marriott Courtyard right across from the the
- 12:12Conference Center. What we didn't realize is they
- 12:14have drifting demonstrations from about 8:00 AM to midnight
- 12:17every day. So be careful where you stayed.
- 12:20In related to SEMA. To Sema, yeah, basically just,
- 12:23you know, makes sense. But after a while that stops
- 12:27being so cool. Yeah.
- 12:28Yeah, 5 minutes. Right, it loses its charm a
- 12:31little bit. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:33Well, Dan, where are you staying?
- 12:34Do you know? And the it's the hotel connected
- 12:37to the conference, so I might have to buy some new airplugs.
- 12:42And I I see a lot of drifting in your future.
- 12:44Yeah, I won't be drifting asleep, I know that.
- 12:47No. It's so Ryan.
- 12:50Have you been? I wish you good luck.
- 12:52Yeah, thanks. I'll.
- 12:54I'll call you guys. You can listen to it.
- 12:57Have you been doing anything as exciting?
- 12:59Ryan, I know you've had a couple of false starts this week.
- 13:01Yeah, but what were you up? What have you been up to?
- 13:04God I was. Supposed to drive that Diablo.
- 13:06So if you follow me on Autoblog, I was supposed to drive a
- 13:10Lamborghini Diablo like 3 months ago and we get around like the
- 13:14if you know Denver, if you know Golden, Golden Gate Canyon,
- 13:17Great Rd. We get to about the third turn
- 13:18and the thing just breaks right? Fortunately I hadn't taken the
- 13:21helm yet. In the end it was just some sort
- 13:24of shift linkage or something. It wasn't a big deal, but you
- 13:28know, Lamborghini Diablo techs are are few and far between and
- 13:33so it took a while to get the car looked at.
- 13:35Then once it was, it was an easy fix.
- 13:37So I was supposed to drive it yesterday.
- 13:38It didn't workout. Going to drive it Friday.
- 13:40So I'm excited about that. I have never driven that's one.
- 13:42You know, I'm trying to check off the poster cars of my youth
- 13:45and the Diablo is, is, is one of them, you know, is trying to
- 13:49come up with a good like headline.
- 13:51And I think it's going to be something along the lines of
- 13:53making waves in the cigarette boat of supercars because that's
- 13:58kind of the vibe when you get in that thing.
- 14:00It's a lot of fiberglass and like, you know, rough edges and
- 14:03tons of power. You could you could do something
- 14:06about the devils in the detail that that's.
- 14:11Well, let me the headline right now is the devils in the details
- 14:14and I'm in a Diablo and then the deck, what they call it sort of
- 14:18the sub head is something along the lines of this is the, you
- 14:21know, the cigarette boat of apparently they don't call them
- 14:23cigarette boats anymore. You know, this idea of a
- 14:25cigarette. Yeah, it's super powerful, like
- 14:28Miami vice type. You know, right now they call
- 14:30them something else and and I don't know where ChatGPT is
- 14:33right now. I'm sorry, Our, uh, our research
- 14:35department or yes or assistant, right?
- 14:38But I think they call them Go Fast boats, right?
- 14:41Which isn't nearly as cool name as cigarette.
- 14:44Cigarette. No, I reject that immediately.
- 14:47Yeah, yeah, anyway, so yeah, cigarette boats.
- 14:54But I get to finally drive the thing.
- 14:57Wow, and you washed your car last weekend?
- 15:01This shouldn't be a news item, but Dan, you know and Lindsay,
- 15:04you know, because we all have basically the same car that, you
- 15:07know, we'd rather drive the thing than wash the thing,
- 15:10right, true and I had so much brake dust.
- 15:14Thankfully, they're. Black, has you been driving it?
- 15:17We take the hose and it's just like this metallic like pool
- 15:21that just like goes down into the earth or whatever, right?
- 15:24Like without any scrubbing the wheels instantly, like yeah,
- 15:28just. Like it was as dirty as it had
- 15:30ever, ever been. But, you know, I think it's a
- 15:33healthy thing to, to sit and, and, and commune with your car
- 15:36once in a while and to really, you know, wash it and take your
- 15:39time and get down on your knees and, you know, get into the
- 15:41wheels and, and you know, the best you can.
- 15:43Those Porsche brake calipers are impossible.
- 15:45They're lots of nooks and crannies.
- 15:46They're like English muffins. But you know, it's I, I did it
- 15:50and it was good. And now I'm afraid to drive the
- 15:52thing again because it is so clean.
- 15:54It's so clean. Yeah, yeah, it's good.
- 15:57I've give it a day or two. Have you got protection on that
- 16:00car or is it like a ceramic or? Yeah, I have almost full PPF.
- 16:05Of course, it's now five years old when I was told PPF, good
- 16:08PPF goes, you know, 9 or 10 years now.
- 16:10So, yeah, it's not a huge deal to and and that's a good thing
- 16:14because I don't know that I could afford to to wrap it again
- 16:16anytime soon. It's like a 5 or $6000
- 16:19proposition, right? Yeah, but well worth it.
- 16:22I, you know, and in this car, I think everything is covered
- 16:24basics for the maybe the doors, you know, you got to, you got to
- 16:27save money somewhere. And then the wheels I think had
- 16:30a ceramic coating and that helps a great deal in just being able
- 16:32to wash, you know, wash the thing the whole car does as
- 16:35well. And you know, that's, that's
- 16:36super helpful. But what did you opt for a PPF
- 16:39on your new 40? I didn't.
- 16:42I had a ceramic coated. Well, that.
- 16:46Yeah, I kind of broke the bank buying it.
- 16:48So yeah, the the ceramic was just one step too far.
- 16:52But ceramic coat, you know, helps.
- 16:55Obviously it doesn't protect as much.
- 16:57No, no, no. It's makes a big difference.
- 16:58Lindsay, have you guys done anything with your GT4?
- 17:02It had PPF on it when we got it and it's starting to fail in a
- 17:08couple areas, but we haven't had it that long, so yeah.
- 17:12Yours is 16, so it's probably done when it was new I'm
- 17:14guessing and and so you probably got a couple years yet, but.
- 17:17I'm not sure because I know it was wrapped several times under
- 17:21previous ownership. And so I don't know how that
- 17:23works with PPF too. So it may, I think it's, I think
- 17:28the PPF is actually relatively new.
- 17:31And so it yeah, I think just whatever for whatever reason,
- 17:37there's a couple areas where it's lifting.
- 17:38So it will need to be addressed before.
- 17:40Long we'll put it on BAT when that time comes in.
- 17:42It's not a problem. I have to say, I saw, Speaking
- 17:46of raps, I saw my first wrapped pole *2 today, guys, just not
- 17:49just just tonight on the way to the way home from Target.
- 17:53You know, pole star twos are generally driven by kind of, you
- 17:57know, I don't want to come uppity folks, but you know,
- 18:00your, your, your middle class, your professors and your, you
- 18:02know, your office workers and that kind of thing.
- 18:05Well, sure enough, I'm coming down the road and coming the
- 18:07other direction. I see.
- 18:08Do you know Porsche has this great color, I think it's called
- 18:10black Gray. It's this they did some of the
- 18:14like the 987.2 GT 3RS is in this color or Gray black.
- 18:19Maybe this it's just this very, very dark grain.
- 18:21It's this great guy anyway, I see this pole start coming.
- 18:23It's wrapped in this this color and I know it's wrapped because
- 18:27it also has a racing stripe and a giant #2 and a gumball on the
- 18:33you just. Want to go like OK tell me
- 18:35everything right? Like, and there was like a, a
- 18:38young man driving it like it was a, you know, a slammed Civic or,
- 18:43you know, BMW or, or whatever. And I, I, yeah, the jury's still
- 18:48out, but I had never seen that. Now I have seen it.
- 18:53Maybe it'll become a thing as prices come down as leases, you
- 18:56know, lease cars are returned. I I don't know but.
- 18:59Feel like credit for trying? Yeah.
- 19:02We appreciate the enthusiasm. It's what, what was it?
- 19:06Is it meet the parents or whatever where you know you can
- 19:10you know you can milk anything. Right.
- 19:14Like, hey, doesn't necessarily mean that you should, but
- 19:17anyway, so OK, so this Gray black, is it like a metallic
- 19:21like super dark? Gray color, right?
- 19:23So think of like mirror blau, right?
- 19:25Like that really, really dark. It's it's Jeff Zwart's favorite
- 19:28color and mine think about like the the grey equivalent where
- 19:32it's very, very dark, not metallic, you know, not you
- 19:35know, it's not quite black, but right, just bring it.
- 19:37Back right there, yeah. It's such a such a good color.
- 19:40Yeah, I think it's great. Black or black, grey.
- 19:42John Deisty, just an underword. If you're listening.
- 19:45You can you can clear the air here.
- 19:46But I don't know. I think maybe my my pole star
- 19:50needs a gumball Dan. There we go.
- 19:52What number? What number?
- 19:53This was #2 which you should consider a road joke there.
- 19:58Just get #1 and then he's like every time you see him, you just
- 20:02give him the lose with. Something that's right, I don't
- 20:05want to Dr. #2. Or even more, you just you just
- 20:09do the wave and like let him be like.
- 20:11This thing, I thought it was like when you see another
- 20:13Porsche and you 9 times out of 10, maybe not in a, you know,
- 20:17lease Macon or something, but if you're in a Porsche sports car,
- 20:209 times out of 1099, times out of 100, you're going to get a
- 20:22wave, you're going to get a flash of the lights, you're
- 20:24going to get something. So I looked over like ready to
- 20:26be like, what's up? You know, And the guy with his
- 20:29hat on, you know, to the side didn't even look my direction.
- 20:34Sounds like a missed opportunity to me.
- 20:37I didn't they I was down in Malibu last Sunday.
- 20:41Yeah. Yeah, How was it?
- 20:43Good. It was good to get a morning to
- 20:45just go for a drive in the Porsche.
- 20:47In the Porsche. Nice.
- 20:48Decided to go down and I had given some like voucher for a
- 20:53coffee shop I'd never been to before, so I thought I'd go get
- 20:56free coffee. So I pulled into the car.
- 20:59Yeah, I bought into the car park and I knew I was in good company
- 21:04straight away because there were two hot rod 60s or 70s, nine
- 21:08elevens, one of which belongs to friend of the show Bill Wolfen
- 21:13Wolfson. Yeah, Oh.
- 21:14Yeah, yes. So I got.
- 21:16To see him at Car Week this year.
- 21:17Your name. Rather, yeah, Yeah.
- 21:19So I literally pulled up and there were GT threes.
- 21:22There were two speedsters, modern speedsters, 9 on ones.
- 21:26Nice. So I pulled up, not awake,
- 21:28needing coffee. And the first thing I hear is
- 21:30hey, Danny, who's he talking to? And it was Bill.
- 21:35OH. My gosh.
- 21:36Nice. And he'd obviously recognize me
- 21:38from Instagram and stuff, so. But there was also a famous
- 21:43racing driver there. I didn't really know who he was,
- 21:46but Court Wagner. Court Wagner.
- 21:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's raced for.
- 21:51He's a. Six time champ, and of course
- 21:54I'm blanking on the series, but yeah.
- 21:56Yeah, and. He's done some, he's done some
- 21:59work with Galpin, I think, and yeah, he's in the mix.
- 22:03Yeah, so. You guys go for a drive after
- 22:06anything or? I unfortunately.
- 22:08You know what court leads in that?
- 22:11Does he you just let court lead otherwise?
- 22:14I don't know the man, but he leads, yeah.
- 22:17Yeah, I know. I had to meet up with the guys
- 22:20who do the dream drives for kids, So and Eric and the.
- 22:24Yeah, yeah. So I, I literally didn't have
- 22:27time to go for a drive this time around, but it was a nice drive
- 22:29down the coast to get down there and back.
- 22:31Excellent. Yeah, so and so.
- 22:33Do you want to share where you were or are we keeping it quiet,
- 22:37keeping it to yourself? For the next big thing, I'm.
- 22:40Which which bit always the name of.
- 22:42The coffee shop. Yeah, I want a voucher.
- 22:44Yeah. Yeah, I think it's good.
- 22:46I can't remember the name of it. I think it's Lux.
- 22:49Cafe Lux. That's what I was going to get.
- 22:51OK, Is it? You know it?
- 22:53Yeah. Cafe Lux.
- 22:54I see the. Shopping center there, right?
- 22:56Yeah. Like in a little strip mall
- 22:59thing, yeah. Yeah.
- 23:00Cafe Lux Shout out to Cafe Lux and the coffee was really nice.
- 23:04How does? We get one of these vouchers,
- 23:05Dan. You have to go to a top secret
- 23:08singer evening event. Because it sounds very curated,
- 23:12I'm going to be. It's a cute.
- 23:15Place and the baristas are always really friendly and
- 23:19coffee's good. And it's.
- 23:21It's amazing. Yeah.
- 23:23Say that again. Pastries were really good, yeah.
- 23:25And. I don't know if I thought.
- 23:27That but that was the singer event is this in May with the
- 23:31NBA you signed Dan is. This I think so the goodie bag
- 23:33is is up for discussion I think. Go on, Singer Coffee.
- 23:41Oh, that's fun. Yeah.
- 23:43Have you tried it yet? I gave it to someone it's just
- 23:46gift not like a hey I bought this for you have a free coffee.
- 23:51I got this for free, would you like?
- 23:53Yeah, yeah. I didn't have a grounding
- 23:54machine. Or that's going to be worth like
- 23:56$1000 into that bag of Singer coffee.
- 23:59Yeah. Yeah, be careful.
- 24:02Well, I mean, everything's important, right?
- 24:04Yeah, especially Singer. Nicely done.
- 24:07Yeah, but I we got hats, we've got baseball caps with Singer
- 24:12and Wheelie Springs went on it nice.
- 24:15I think it was a lovely book of the photographer.
- 24:18They had a photographer around at the track a few months prior
- 24:21and a really famous photographer whose name escapes me, but
- 24:24lovely book of his work, which I've given away to another
- 24:27friend. So lesson here is just big
- 24:30Gandhi. Yeah, I was going to say the
- 24:32lesson here is be your friend and just hang around at the
- 24:34right times. Yeah.
- 24:36Oh, Lindsay, don't worry. When I helped Dan move, I walked
- 24:38to it with all kinds of goodies. What did you get?
- 24:41It's. Like I have party favours for
- 24:43you. Get excited.
- 24:45Tell you what I got, well I one of the things was a Porsche key
- 24:49chain. Which I didn't know.
- 24:51I need that now. Well, it's literally got my My
- 24:55Alley Padlock key on, so you know, I'm happy to give it back.
- 25:00Maya's Max pullover. That's that's here on the shelf
- 25:04like a like a piece of art. Do you know?
- 25:06Because it was, it was a little tight on me, to be honest.
- 25:09I almost wore mine tonight and I was like, what if Ryan wears his
- 25:12and then we're twins Did. You notice when I wore that on
- 25:15the show, it was from about here up.
- 25:19It's a reason I look like a. Size, that's amazing.
- 25:21We probably have the same size because when I put it on I look
- 25:24very 80s. It's very like oversized, you
- 25:27know, flashdance ish. So I think they were
- 25:31one-size-fits-all or thereabouts.
- 25:34I have no doubt it looks better. Yeah.
- 25:36So it's a really good coffee shop.
- 25:38I would highly recommend it. I think there's a few of them in
- 25:40California. Yeah.
- 25:42There's a few. Different locations, yeah, on a,
- 25:45on a Sunday morning and and I think I was there pretty early.
- 25:48I think I opened eights and I was there for opening so.
- 25:51Living the dream man. There was another place up in
- 25:54the hills that they go to in a drive afterwards, I can't
- 25:57remember the name of it, like the old the old place or the old
- 26:01farm or something. Old place.
- 26:02Yeah, that's another. That's another destination in
- 26:06Malibu, because I think it's back in the Canyon.
- 26:08I haven't been there, but I've heard of it.
- 26:10Yes. So that's on the list.
- 26:12The next time it'll be starting at that coffee shop and then
- 26:14going up to the old place. Oh.
- 26:16Nice. So when I'm in LA for the auto
- 26:19show, we have some driving to do.
- 26:21We do vibes. That needs to be done as well,
- 26:23right? Absolutely.
- 26:25So should we break into some news?
- 26:28Let's do it. So the first, what I was looking
- 26:31at today is Can you believe that the Toorak, the VW Toorak has
- 26:36just been retired, but it, it went on for 24 years.
- 26:40Dan, I had to look that up to make sure that that was right.
- 26:43Yeah, it's. 24 years. Yeah.
- 26:46That seems like a very long time, especially because I can't
- 26:49remember the last time I saw a new one on the road.
- 26:52We never got the third Gen. in the US, right.
- 26:54We only got the first two gens, which were basically I think was
- 26:57a facelift, but. That would be why.
- 27:00That would be why we haven't seen them for a while, yeah.
- 27:02Wow, that explains. It yeah, that third Gen. wasn't
- 27:06so good looking. Yes they did AV10 diesel in that
- 27:10car. Yeah.
- 27:12That's very European. Yeah.
- 27:14That's a hot, hot item if you can find one that's.
- 27:18Guessing it was part of the PIAC.
- 27:19When PIAC was in charge, he had all these different cars
- 27:22commissioned, didn't he? So that in the US came out in
- 27:25O2, right? The tour, Yeah, OK.
- 27:28And I think we've discussed this before.
- 27:30It was named after a band of, I don't know, Mary Travellers or
- 27:34something in the Saharan. Desert tribe, wasn't it?
- 27:38Yeah, right, right. And plus, Volksman has this T
- 27:41thing that yeah, that they do, you know, and don't be confused
- 27:46with the Tiguan because the Touareg is was really something
- 27:49special. Tiguan fine car owned one.
- 27:51As you know, listen to me and listen to the show for a while
- 27:54had run up until a couple years ago.
- 27:55Fine thing. But the Touareg really was
- 27:57something special. Do you know, they shared a, a
- 27:59platform with, you know, with the Cayenne.
- 28:01You know, they also shared the Cayenne's locking differentials,
- 28:05right. To your point, Dan, there was a,
- 28:06a whole spectrum of power trains and this was 2002.
- 28:10And think back to 2002 Volkswagen, right?
- 28:13The Volkswagen lineup of 2002. And like, what was what was in
- 28:17that? I mean that that was like peak
- 28:19Volkswagen because you could still buy the Euro van in the
- 28:22United States in 2002. Oh, wow.
- 28:24You know, the, the New Beetle was still new, right?
- 28:26We still think that is new. That's 25 years old too.
- 28:29I think they just called that what last year or something.
- 28:32The Jetta was. That was like peak Jetta.
- 28:34Right, R32. Was it the Golf R32?
- 28:37Yeah, yeah. And it's still on a manual.
- 28:40Yeah. No, I mean, you know the Passat,
- 28:43you could get the Passat with the W8.
- 28:46Yeah. The next year in 2003, you could
- 28:48get the Phaeton, right, with either A8 or AW12.
- 28:52This was those were magic times for Volkswagen.
- 28:56How the mighty have fallen, yeah.
- 28:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:00So Dan, I think Ryan and I, and maybe you were with Ryan, we've
- 29:04both seen that same phaeton at the Peterson.
- 29:07I don't know if it's still lurking around or if it's
- 29:10working. Is the word, but I love that
- 29:12thing. I think it got sold.
- 29:13I don't know, but I think it got sold.
- 29:15Yeah. You don't.
- 29:16You don't see them anymore, do you?
- 29:18No, no. No, I mean, it was, it was such
- 29:21a rare sighting even in the moment and then sort of see one
- 29:24within the last couple of years was like, wait, I've got to be
- 29:27imagining this. Yeah, it was an excellent
- 29:29example if I recall. And it was the W 12 because you
- 29:32could also get them in the V8, you know, and if you're not
- 29:35familiar with the car, it was like this Passat extra, right?
- 29:38It was it was basically a a Bentley, right?
- 29:41It had it. Was, yeah, it was their attempt
- 29:43at a luxury car. And it was equivalent, like at
- 29:46least to the consumer, it was equivalent to an A8, but it also
- 29:50had an A8 price tag. And I remember multiple people
- 29:53saying like, well, if I'm paying this and unfortunately if I'm
- 29:57getting, I'm not getting the cachet of the Audi label, but
- 30:00I'm paying an Audi price. Like why wouldn't I just go buy
- 30:02the a 8? And so it was a great car.
- 30:05I actually got to see them when they debuted.
- 30:07Speaking of our most recent episode with Andy or our most
- 30:11recent non bonus episode with Andy Steinhauser, I got to see
- 30:15it at the LA Auto Show when they debuted.
- 30:17When it was new, yeah. Yeah, it.
- 30:19First came out and it was striking, like it was a
- 30:22beautiful car. But yeah, the comment was like,
- 30:25OK, but it's not an Audi. So I think that was a tough
- 30:29thing for it to overcome, yeah. We, we, we talk about when, when
- 30:33OEM's have just sort of like the perfect lineup, right?
- 30:36Like we're all, when all the stars align.
- 30:38We talk about early 90s Nissan, right, and the maximum of the
- 30:42four door sports car, the introduction of the Altima, you
- 30:44know, the 300ZX, the 240SX, that OG Pathfinder with a little
- 30:49triangle window. Like, you know, I mean, it was
- 30:51just, you know, that was it, right, Like 1990 Nissan
- 30:55dealership, right? You know, Honda right, Maybe a
- 30:58couple years before that when you'd walk in or when they
- 31:00introduced the new Accord in 1990.
- 31:02And I, I feel like Volkswagen in the, you know, that really the
- 31:05mid 2000s was about as good as Volkswagen ever got.
- 31:09And it's just unfortunately, it's not quite the same anymore
- 31:12for a number of reasons. But that Touareg to come back to
- 31:15that was over built like you wouldn't believe.
- 31:17I don't know if you either one of you've ever driven one, but
- 31:19when we were shopping for our Tiguan, when the Tiguan was
- 31:22still a relatively new thing, I wanted a Touareg.
- 31:24I wanted like a 2 year old Touareg.
- 31:25But you know, we then wanted the, the warranty and everything
- 31:28else got the Tiguan. But even though they kind of
- 31:30looked the same, it was not this, you know, that that
- 31:32Touareg was was was a rig, you know, that was something you
- 31:36could off road. You know, it's just it was a
- 31:39special overbuilt thing, much like the Phaeton or the Passat
- 31:42W8 or what have you. And I don't know, pour one out,
- 31:46I guess, huh? Yeah.
- 31:47It's gone. They've also I was reading today
- 31:50or yesterday. The ID buzz is on hold.
- 31:55Yes, I saw that is. This a tariffs thing?
- 31:58What is this? It's a demand.
- 32:01Sales, yeah, demand. They're just not selling.
- 32:04They're just not selling. This is a real shame cuz I liked
- 32:07it when I drove it. Yeah, so was.
- 32:09It a price you got to drive one when we were at the Seattle Auto
- 32:12Show, Yeah, last year. Which is probably this time last
- 32:16year, wasn't it? Yeah, it was coming up, I think
- 32:18it was early November, but they, you know, they had that stop
- 32:23sale on them with no explanation.
- 32:26And the the, you know, rumors were that it was because they
- 32:30just weren't selling and that they were trying to mitigate it
- 32:33by just saying like, Oh well, we're going to pause sales.
- 32:36And so I wonder if this is kind of they've, they've accepted
- 32:41like it's just not happening. And so they're like, yeah, we're
- 32:43just going to pause sales or we're going to pause the
- 32:46manufacturing because they're not selling.
- 32:48So obviously the end of September, the credits ended in
- 32:51lots of States, and I wonder if that was the nail on the coffin
- 32:54for the moment. It's a good theory.
- 32:57Say once they started slapping the the vinyl wood on the side a
- 33:01la PT Cruiser, I started, you know, questioning maybe the.
- 33:04The days were numbered, were they?
- 33:05State of things it's a real shame because I've still only
- 33:09seen a handful out and about and the whole family makes a .0 yeah
- 33:12there's, you know, the new Volkswagen bus or whatever
- 33:15right? They mean they're, they, they
- 33:16make a statement and they're cool and and I've not driven
- 33:20one, but I think they're neat. And what a what a shame, you
- 33:23know, because we, we, you know, you know, we, we sit and we
- 33:26whine about, you know, where all, where have all the
- 33:28interesting cars gone? Right well.
- 33:31Then we have to learn to buy them when they show, Yeah.
- 33:34But aren't they like 80 grand? Yeah, they're not cheap.
- 33:37Yeah, it's an easy car to love though, isn't it?
- 33:40Like just to look at it. Yeah.
- 33:41Yeah, yeah. Who?
- 33:42I mean, you can't hit on that, right?
- 33:44You got to look at that and smile.
- 33:45But I got to say, other than when it was first introduced and
- 33:48they did that, it was the The Californians parody on the
- 33:51Volkswagen, you know, commercial, I don't think I've
- 33:53seen a bit of advertising for that thing since.
- 33:57Nice, I may have seen a print ad or two but like don't quote me
- 34:01on it. And I actually saw one-on-one of
- 34:04my Rd. trips over the summer. I saw a solid black one which
- 34:07was really unique and striking, especially because most of them
- 34:12are the white with a color on the bottom.
- 34:14So just the one that was all one color and then black.
- 34:18It was the only one I've ever seen like that.
- 34:20And it was, it was very stealth. It's like, oh wait, I think I
- 34:23could like really get into that. I'd like that and I'll make a
- 34:27prediction that it will come back with with an internal
- 34:30combustion engine and can't call it the buzz anymore.
- 34:33Let's call it the bus, but it'll come back.
- 34:35They, they put too much investment in the thing.
- 34:37It's too good. I think they just did.
- 34:39They swung and missed with it just being only electric.
- 34:42Yeah. Well, that would follow with a
- 34:44lot of, I mean, Porsche has retracted like that's they're
- 34:48not the only ones that might be pivoting on that, Yeah.
- 34:51I think it will come back, but I don't think it'll have an ICE
- 34:53engine. I think it will come back with
- 34:55much more range because I think that's what it needs, OK.
- 34:58I think if you can get something that's got 500 miles out of it
- 35:02for a similar price and I guess the timing there is just battery
- 35:05tech, I think it then becomes more appealing.
- 35:08But I think, I think it was like less than 300 mile range if I
- 35:11remember already well. You've got the room.
- 35:13It's not like it's some sub compact, right?
- 35:15I mean you've got like that's the thing.
- 35:16You've got room for batteries in right, right floor and floor and
- 35:20all that. So interesting.
- 35:22Well, and like you said, if it's it's not a cheap car and if the
- 35:27range feels a lot more limited, that's a harder sell.
- 35:31Then if you've got something where you're like, yeah, like
- 35:34it's electric and it's a little bit pricier, but it's a really
- 35:37cool thing and I know I can take it and go on these trips.
- 35:40And not worry about it. That's it.
- 35:41It's not a Nissan Leaf, it's a road trip car.
- 35:44It's got to be able to make Rd. trips, right?
- 35:47That's actually be able to take the trips.
- 35:50Yeah. Yeah, well, yeah, watch this
- 35:53space. I feel like we're saying that a
- 35:54lot with a lot of OEMs. It's kind of we're going to look back
- 35:58on this time period as the sort of like, OK, we'll check back
- 36:02and see which direction they decided to go.
- 36:05That car show is proud to partner with Drake Motor Cars.
- 36:09Drake Motor Cars is Denver's premier destination for exactly

- 36:33A sign of a good business is when there are more customers
- 36:36than inventory, so reach out to Drake too if you've got a great
- 36:39enthusiast car that just doesn't get driven like it used to.
- 36:43Find out more at drakemotorcars.com and let them
- 36:46know you heard about them on that car show.
- 36:50So do you like my Derek TM Scott collection?
- 36:53I was going to say I like, yeah, I like your vest.
- 36:57Do you want to explain what you're?
- 36:59Wearing Oh sure, I've got a Colorado grand vest, so.
- 37:03It's not a John Dicey knockoff. No, but I would take one of
- 37:09those too. Preferably very large and on a
- 37:12T-shirt. Maybe something sleeveless.
- 37:16So yeah, Colorado grand, the famous, you know, Colorado Grand
- 37:19Arrow. And we of course had Derek Tam
- 37:22Scott and tattoo Otis on a few weeks ago.
- 37:25And then the following week there they were on the
- 37:28curmudgeon show, as they should be and, and resplendent in their
- 37:33their grand gear. So I'm just.
- 37:35He's your he's your fashion muse.
- 37:37Now that's. Right, that's perfect.
- 37:39It's just my lifestyle muse. I think those guys have it all
- 37:42figured out. So those guys, when they came to
- 37:46the Grand, right, the rest of us from the Grandeur, they had
- 37:48their own OTSOTS as their business.
- 37:50They had their own branded OTS gear on.
- 37:53They had, well, the rest of us were in these, you know, I don't
- 37:57know, vests and coats and things.
- 37:58They cut quite a profile in matching white.
- 38:02Let's call them Italian valet jackets, right?
- 38:06For lack of a better, you know. And that cut.
- 38:09Very elegant and right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:11And so next year, they should be.
- 38:14Following their car show jackets.
- 38:16Right. Yeah, I I don't think the
- 38:19tailored fit is. I don't think Italian ballet is
- 38:22the look. But yeah, it's I.
- 38:24Think. They're young, they're.
- 38:27They're workshop chic is the look.
- 38:29There you go. That's right.
- 38:31Yeah. Amazing.
- 38:33Did you guys see that Leah Block has a new project car?
- 38:37No. What is it?
- 38:38So you need to go to Block House racing to to check it out.
- 38:42But car at the moment maybe I guess when you sell a car, it
- 38:46becomes car at the moment is a GR Corolla.
- 38:49So I know Ryan, you've got coming up in a couple of weeks.
- 38:52Leah Block is starting a project to modify one.
- 38:55Nice. I think it needs that.
- 38:57I think it needs a little injection right of something.
- 39:00Drive it first. Once you've driven it, then
- 39:03comment. OK, OK.
- 39:05Yeah. I just feel like they were like
- 39:06the, the, the next big thing there for a minute.
- 39:08Just don't hear the talk anymore.
- 39:10You know, it's I, I'll go on record.
- 39:13I've, I've, I've, I've been a passenger in one.
- 39:15I've never spent any time as a driver.
- 39:19And I wanted to get one, one of the last 2020 fives before they
- 39:24were replaced with the 26 in the press fleets, because I
- 39:27understand for 26 there are some changes.
- 39:30And Dan, you may know more than I.
- 39:32You owned a GR Corolla. You no longer own a GR Corolla.
- 39:36Right now it's cool. Your timing is impeccable, Dan.
- 39:42I mean, you, you liked it, but did you love it?
- 39:44Because if you loved it, would you still have it?
- 39:48There was a logistics challenge, there was a like if I had loads
- 39:52of space for different cars and loads of money, then I'd have
- 39:54another one like, it's as simple as that.
- 39:56But I don't. So you know 2 car solutions and
- 40:00three cars doesn't work right? And I'm excited to drive it in
- 40:05Colorado because I think it's such a great Colorado car,
- 40:07right? It's like a WRX, but with, you
- 40:10know, more guts And, you know, this one's a manual, so I'm
- 40:14excited for that. And yeah, I get to spend the
- 40:16week with it. You know, I don't know.
- 40:18I'm going to take it up in the mountains.
- 40:19We've got some snow. I, you know, probably has P4SS
- 40:22or something. But yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 40:25beating on it a little. I'm forward to driving it
- 40:27responsibly. Yeah.
- 40:30I'd like to go on record as saying I will be fully
- 40:32respectful of the car. The end.
- 40:34Absolutely. You know I am.
- 40:35But yeah, yeah, I could never hurt a car.
- 40:38No. Yeah, I'm excited to see what
- 40:40you think of it. Yeah, so that I am too.
- 40:42I have two blocks. Pick one.
- 40:44She's working on one and you know.
- 40:46That's really cool. What's she gonna do with it?
- 40:48Like, is it a, is it a powertrain thing?
- 40:50Is it a styling exercise? A little bit of everything?
- 40:52Like what's? I think if you look at the
- 40:55history of the cars that she's had, like, you know, she had an
- 40:57Audi short wheelbase, for example, you know, they go to
- 41:00town and they do everything so excellent.
- 41:03Yeah. I mean, Johnny's already done
- 41:04that, hasn't he, On his car? That's.
- 41:06Right. Have you been in his car,
- 41:08Lindsay? I haven't.
- 41:09No. No, but I love the blue.
- 41:12Yeah, this is Johnny Lieberman, who was on the show, and he has
- 41:16customized his GR Corolla. There's nothing more than
- 41:19touched, I think, right? Pure and.
- 41:23It sounds like. Some things have been done 3 or
- 41:244 times. Yeah, because he was getting,
- 41:28what was it they were sending him, I think like the USB, and
- 41:32they were flashing it daily and then looking at the ratings and
- 41:34then adjusting. And yeah, that sounded like they
- 41:37were having a lot of fun with that.
- 41:38Yeah. That's.
- 41:40Good talk, I'll. Definitely report back.
- 41:42Yeah. I don't know if it's true or
- 41:44not, but this story appeared in Top Gear Philippines and.
- 41:49We're big there too, for the record.
- 41:51That's right, that's where we're at #68 in that chart.
- 41:55But they, they shared a story about a couple in the UK.
- 42:00Actually, you are very near to where I went to university.
- 42:04Oh, really? And what do you do when you
- 42:06celebrate 70 years of marriage? You go buy a 9/11.
- 42:10You go buy a 911, but you go buy a GT3.
- 42:13There you go. So if this story is true, it's
- 42:15probably the story that has broken the Internet this week in
- 42:18terms of just a heartwarming story about how you know you
- 42:22celebrate 70 years together by buying one of the best sports
- 42:26cars you can buy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:29I wondered if this was true. I think it was my dad who first
- 42:33sent this to me. Like, I get all my best, you
- 42:35know, news items. You you really do have your own
- 42:39research assistant. It's just your dad.
- 42:40Yeah. It's a real live boy, but this
- 42:44couple in the picture, like, you know, like when you see an AI
- 42:47generated image, you just can't quite put your finger on it.
- 42:50Uncanny valley or whatever. And and and you know, just these
- 42:54two were just too perfect. And I think it is legit.
- 42:57I think this is a real couple, but now it's been picked up and,
- 43:01and, and, you know, and, and kind of like a copy of a copy
- 43:04and people have added new, you know, new twists to the story.
- 43:07They're embellishing the story. New jokes because it's like the
- 43:10cutest looking couple right Then the the article you sent me, Dan
- 43:15said that, but this is nothing new for them because in 2015
- 43:18they picked up a a new TTS or something or TTRS and they drove
- 43:21Norway and back so. But then no you I.
- 43:25Know I mean. Good on them, you know, and if
- 43:28they are fake, you know, people are having relationships with
- 43:31chat bots now. I mean, this can be my chat bot
- 43:34spirit animal. These two, you know, it's we.
- 43:37Wish them the best, whether they exist or not.
- 43:40It was funny because they imprompted me this morning to
- 43:42text our our friend at Porsche Corrado Springs.
- 43:45And I asked him, what is the oldest person you've sold a car
- 43:49to? And he said, well, I once sold a
- 43:52car to a guy who was half blind, and the next day his kids
- 43:56brought the car back. It's a name.
- 44:01And he would play anonymous. But we know who you are, John.
- 44:05Yeah. Well, you hear stories like this
- 44:09and I'm not this would never happen with John or at Portia
- 44:12Carter, I suppose, of course, right.
- 44:13But you hear stories about, you know, some guy walks in and, you
- 44:16know, walks out with like, you know, three different under
- 44:18coding packages, this kind of thing.
- 44:21And and but these two people seemed like legit.
- 44:25They seemed if real, seemed like the real deal.
- 44:27And I mean, why not, you know? I mean, I saw it and I just, I
- 44:33think I like, I just loved it so much.
- 44:36It was like, what a perfect way to celebrate.
- 44:38Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Good on them, good on them.
- 44:40That's what I'm. Saying but but is it a stick?
- 44:44I don't know. In the picture I'm looking at
- 44:46the picture now there is a stick but it's OK, it's one to walk
- 44:50with I think. You got to refine your question.
- 44:54Ryan. If you look in the back corner
- 44:56there is a walking stick. OK, well, this is a guy, this is
- 45:00a couple. I'll give them a pass if they go
- 45:01PDK. Right, they look like PDK
- 45:04drivers. At this point they may have been
- 45:07manual drivers in the past. Yeah, nobody's going to be
- 45:10crudge them. Yeah, exactly.
- 45:12Well, if we're so lucky, right, they're doing the same thing, so
- 45:16good on them, yeah. That's it, I.
- 45:17Think we get them on the show? Is it?
- 45:18Have you seen them on Spike's car radio yet?
- 45:20Because I haven't. I mean, let's lock this in.
- 45:23Yeah. Yeah, Dan, they're from your
- 45:25town. Or your.
- 45:26Yeah, from my universe. Make it happen.
- 45:29Let's go. Find them.
- 45:32He's going to come back and be like, so they don't exist, but
- 45:36it's fine. I really hope they do exist.
- 45:39It's the best story ever. It's the best.
- 45:41Story You want to exist. Isn't it naturally?
- 45:43You want to happen? Absolutely.
- 45:45Especially as car people like and you know, it's like the
- 45:48intersection of car people and hopeless romantics and you're
- 45:51just like, yes, I love all of it.
- 45:53Yeah, yeah. I want to say mic drop, but when
- 45:55you're 92 maybe that's not the phrase to use.
- 45:58Yeah, it's just drop. Oh no.
- 46:05Oh man, I know. I hope it's real and I hope
- 46:07they're enjoying the hell out of that car.
- 46:08Should we make it competition time?
- 46:11Yes, let's do. It yeah.
- 46:12So in the latest round of winning a Sheffield watch and
- 46:17and just to be clear, right, this is a watch.
- 46:20If you're choosing, it's not like we're going to make you
- 46:22have one that's, you know, not selling or anything like that.
- 46:25It's just like you can go onto the website, you can say I want
- 46:29that watch and if you win the competition, we will get that
- 46:32watch sent to you. So what we thought we would do
- 46:35this week is something slightly different.
- 46:38So these are high value, really good watches.
- 46:40We all wear them, we all have them, we'll take them out.
- 46:43So we want to make your work a little bit harder and a little
- 46:46bit differently this time to win the watch.
- 46:48And what we would love you to do is please drop us a comment on
- 46:53either Spotify. I nearly said Shopify for some
- 46:57reason, but Spotify the. Ads are working.
- 47:00That's right. T Moo.
- 47:02T moo drop us a comment on Shopify on the show, not my just
- 47:08personal playlist, but on the show and just give us some
- 47:11feedback. Maybe it's a guest that you want
- 47:14to see on the show. Maybe it's a show you really
- 47:17enjoyed and you're just commenting about that specific
- 47:19episode. Or you can do the same on Apple
- 47:22Podcasts. So they're 2 main platforms.
- 47:26And then we will take all those comments.
- 47:28We will pick one at random and notify you that you've won a
- 47:32Sheffield watch, and if you want to have a look at what watches
- 47:35you could win, go on to sheffieldwatches.com.
- 47:39I'm really enjoying the rally, which is 1 I received about
- 47:43three weeks ago. I've got the Spikes car Radio
- 47:45One on today, but I'm really enjoying the rally.
- 47:48I think it's very unique. Lindsay, you got a pink one
- 47:50recently, is that right? I did, and I have been reaching
- 47:53for that more than anything, which won't surprise anybody
- 47:56that's watching us because I'm wearing a sweater that's bright
- 47:59pink, too, and all of the Sheffield watches make me smile.
- 48:03That one in particular, because it's so bright, especially in
- 48:06the Pacific Northwest, where it has now gotten grey, you know,
- 48:09for the duration. So it's nice to have some bright
- 48:11pops of color, but I've also been reaching for my Spikes car
- 48:14radio because it's just so classic and, you know, goes with
- 48:18blue really well. So I really love all of them.
- 48:23I wear the yellow, yeah, the yellow QL one I wear more than
- 48:27probably any other watch. And one could say it's just
- 48:31because it's a quartz watch with a battery and I don't have to
- 48:33set the time, you know, but it's super low profile.
- 48:38It doesn't snag and stuff. It looks good.
- 48:39I get more comments on that thing.
- 48:41You know, what is that? Because it's got the dial
- 48:43that's, you know, what are we calling that dial?
- 48:46Oh, it's a pilot, pilot style. Yeah, it's the yeah, it's just
- 48:50we're. So it's kind of an.
- 48:51Angle and yeah, I don't know. It's designed to be worn on the
- 48:53inside of your wrist, right? Which I do not do but.
- 48:57Part of this so when you're driving, instead of having to
- 48:59turn your wrist, you can just look up.
- 49:02I'm going to try that the next time I'm driving.
- 49:04There we go. I'm going to just see what
- 49:05that's all. About and.
- 49:08Then flash it to #2 in the pole star.
- 49:13Do the wave with the hand that has the watch on the inside.
- 49:17So just in summary, if you want to win a watch, we're going to
- 49:20pick it random, but you've got to put a comment on either
- 49:23Spotify or Apple Podcasts and it's a it's specific to our
- 49:28shows. So put a comment about either
- 49:30future guests or something you would like feedback wise or
- 49:33something that you've really enjoyed.
- 49:36So that's how you could win. Yeah, and best of luck to
- 49:39everyone. Yeah, indeed, indeed, if you.
- 49:42Win the annual Show up at your door at the giant check and.
- 49:46Yeah. Sheffield did you have that in
- 49:49the UK? That was like such a part of our
- 49:51television landscape in the US growing up, right?
- 49:53Would you like Publishers Clearing House?
- 49:55And no, we didn't. We used to get the TV
- 49:57commercials where the the dude would turn up and promise to do
- 50:00to turn people's whites even whiter with, you know, we.
- 50:04Had that too. Yeah.
- 50:06Yeah, that and we had the woman that would show up and talk to
- 50:09you about dish soap. Yeah.
- 50:12So if you don't comment, if you don't comment on either of those
- 50:15two platforms, we'll send someone around to talk to you
- 50:17about dish soap. Oh really?
- 50:21Everyone wins is the way it works.
- 50:23Yes, yes. What have we got coming up?
- 50:26Anything exciting coming up, folks?
- 50:28Part of the Diablo, which he's milking till.
- 50:30Yeah. That's my.
- 50:32He's just going to sit there with Devil Horn.
- 50:34It's like, I don't know if you. Know Lindsay, what have you got
- 50:37coming up? I'm going to try.
- 50:40This weekend is not looking promising.
- 50:42It's looking like it's going to be very a lot of precipitation
- 50:45up here. But I'm going to try and get out
- 50:47for another drive as soon as it's sunny and I have the time
- 50:50because it's not below freezing yet.
- 50:53And I feel like I want to, you know, ring the seat the driving
- 50:57season for as much as I can at least.
- 51:00Nice. Yeah.
- 51:03And nothing above every and above the temple is going to be
- 51:05the highlight, right? But what else have you got?
- 51:07I'm. Going to do the same I mean the
- 51:08driving season here in Denver is, you know, it seems like a
- 51:11bit of a an extended summer but yeah, eventually we're going to
- 51:16see some snow. It's getting down to freezing at
- 51:17night head. If you live in Denver, you
- 51:20chances are you have a sprinkler system and then there's this
- 51:22ritual in the fall of blowing out the sprinkler system and you
- 51:25know that has happened. So that's kind of the the
- 51:28telltale sign the the beating heart of of winter.
- 51:33And and so, yeah, I know it's around the coast.
- 51:36Yeah, I want to go out and drive as well.
- 51:37Big fuel fed. It's if you live in the Denver
- 51:39area, give it a plug to fuel fed.
- 51:41Fuel fed has the final Boulder. I'll never, I'll never remember
- 51:46what they call the thing. It's not cars and coffee, cars
- 51:48and caffeine or caffeine and cars, whatever.
- 51:49It's on Pearl Street and Boulder.
- 51:51That's this Sunday and I'm going to try to make it to that Always
- 51:56fun. And yeah, last one of the
- 51:58season, right. I mean, yeah, it's.
- 52:00I think yeah, you guys are having a longer season.
- 52:03I think all the cars and coffees here have pretty.
- 52:05Much wrapped up, really. Yeah.
- 52:07Yeah, well, I might go down on Sunday to Malibu and the coffee
- 52:11shop. Maybe I'll get enough courage to
- 52:14challenge court to pink slips. Who knows?
- 52:18We will see. So TuneIn next week to see who
- 52:21won. Yeah, where that car is gone.
- 52:24Or at least coffee vouchers. Yes, but yeah, race for coffee
- 52:28vouchers. I like that.
- 52:29That's less risk, isn't it? That's so Malibu.
- 52:33Right, that's a bit safer. I feel way more comfortable
- 52:35racing for coffee vouchers than racing for pigs, right?
- 52:39Yeah, it's good coffee. Could that be a puddle for our
- 52:42show? Racing for coffee vouchers?
- 52:44Yeah, goodbye. It could.
- 52:46Be that's how Southern California is that like, talk
- 52:50about tying up cars, like tying together cars and coffee in the
- 52:53best way. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:56Was there anything else people wanted to talk about this week?
- 52:59I thought it was really interesting that you brought up
- 53:01the Toyota bringing the century or turning the century as a into
- 53:07a brand here. Yeah.
- 53:09In the. States, you know, it's been a
- 53:10car in Japan and at least one of the articles I was reading about
- 53:15it, I was really intrigued by the way they were talking about
- 53:19what they are hoping to do with the Century brand and
- 53:24particularly in relation to the Lexus brand.
- 53:26That's the question because they the way at least the interview
- 53:31that I read they were talking about the intent is for century
- 53:36to be thought of as kind of the premier luxury brand so that
- 53:40Lexus can be quote freer. And what struck me is, you know,
- 53:46Lexus has built up this kind of loyal following over the years.
- 53:50And they've been known as, to me, the way they were describing
- 53:55the Century as kind of this peak luxury brand.
- 53:57And that's what they stand for. And it's quality and people know
- 54:00they're dependable, but also really nice cars.
- 54:03And so I'm curious, like I'd love to know kind of the back
- 54:07story on that because with Century being a new brand, I was
- 54:12reading it going, well, wait a minute.
- 54:13So you're going to try and seemingly give the market share
- 54:17of Lexus to Century and then have Lexus go off and be who
- 54:21knows what. So I'm curious to hear your
- 54:23guys, your thoughts. Don't What do you think?
- 54:27Yeah. Don't you think that Lexus has
- 54:28progressively gotten sportier, right.
- 54:31And sort of gotten further away from its luxury roots?
- 54:33So I I think that's where Century comes in.
- 54:35That said, it's a weird like if you've been to Japan, if you're
- 54:37a JDM person, you know about Century, but 99% of Americans
- 54:41don't that that doesn't mean anything to them, right?
- 54:44Right. So century almost sounds like, I
- 54:46mean, there was a Buick century, right?
- 54:48Like, I don't know if that name is is is necessarily hitting for
- 54:51me, at least as an American, but.
- 54:54No, I think it's evoking the Buicks, yeah.
- 54:58I don't know. If you're going in above the
- 55:00Lexus, right, I mean, famously when Lexus, Lexus first came
- 55:05out, like people like Porsche cook in Lexuses to test and they
- 55:12would, they would use them for noise testing specifically.
- 55:17So they they set benchmarks really early on.
- 55:20So why do you do away with that? You know, all that hard work
- 55:25that's gone in. And I can only think that Lexus
- 55:27then becomes more of a lifestyle brand.
- 55:30So it becomes the brand for golfers or the brand for people
- 55:33that like to go off roading or the brand that, you know, people
- 55:36who don't, they play tennis, they are sporty, but they still
- 55:42don't have, I guess what I would call really sporty cars.
- 55:46They're luxury cars. They were like GT cars I had.
- 55:51Is it the LC or the LS500, the convertible LC?
- 55:55Yeah, LC luxury coupe. There we go.
- 55:58But they're not they're not sporty sporty like they're not
- 56:02Porsche sporty or they're not So, but I think if they go
- 56:06lifestyle, but I think, you know, establishing a new brand
- 56:09that's luxury and probably going up against Mercedes-Benz, it's
- 56:13like right big. Or even Ben especially because.
- 56:16They've, yeah, they've invested so much in Lexus, which I think
- 56:21up to this point does hold its own with kind of the big name,
- 56:24you know, longer running luxury brands.
- 56:28So like, I'm really curious to see how this plays out because I
- 56:31went, yeah, you've done all this work to establish Lexus and it
- 56:34has this market share and this loyal following.
- 56:37Yeah. And yeah, it's fascinating.
- 56:41Will they do AV 12 which they're known for in Japan?
- 56:46Right, They do a 12 century sedan or something, at least for
- 56:49a short time. Yeah, it's it's an interest.
- 56:53You know, they're still one of the V8 hold holdouts, right.
- 56:55I mean, if you want AV eight in a car, right.
- 56:57Yeah, You know, Lexus is really one of the few brands you can
- 56:59get something like that. It's interesting.
- 57:01I back in the day, Dan, I don't know in the UK, but Lindsay, you
- 57:04remember when Infinity and and Lexus were, were new and, you
- 57:09know, Infinity very famously had their naturalistic sort of like
- 57:13if a haiku were a car, right. It would have been Infinity, you
- 57:18know, and at about the same time that Lexus was a thing and they
- 57:20totally ate the S class, you know, down to the headlights and
- 57:23everything else. You, you know, were you camp
- 57:26Infinity or camp Camp Lexus back in the back in the day?
- 57:29Did you have a favorite? Because.
- 57:31I was more camp skeptic because like you said, I remember when
- 57:35those brands came into being and it was very like, up to that
- 57:40point, luxury cars had been really Mercedes and BMW and Audi
- 57:45was there but didn't have, you know, nearly the market share,
- 57:49you know. So I remember just kind of going
- 57:52like, well, what is this? And in a lot of ways they were
- 57:56just rebadged Toyotas or, you know, Nissan's and then Honda
- 58:02had Acura, obviously. And it was like, well, is this
- 58:04really a thing? Like, is this going to be a
- 58:06going concern? And obviously the cars became
- 58:10more differentiated, the luxury brands versus the sort of
- 58:14standard models. But yeah, initially it was like
- 58:16you're paying a lot of money for a name like a different badge.
- 58:21So yeah, that's my I was team skeptic.
- 58:26Did you have the two options in the UK and were they called
- 58:29Infinity and Lexus or? Not early on.
- 58:32Early on there was just Lexus. So Infinity came much later, I
- 58:36think because they were part of also part of the Renault group.
- 58:40And we did. I don't even know if we had
- 58:43Acura. I think we had Acura but not it
- 58:45was all Honda like for us the NSX was branded Honda.
- 58:49Where it was an. Acura over here.
- 58:53I think back then too, you know, that Infinity really styled
- 58:55themselves after BMW. Look at the Q45.
- 58:58That was a 7 Series, right? Yeah.
- 59:00You know, I mean, that that I think was the distinction that
- 59:02Infinity was. I was the sporty brand.
- 59:04I mean, was last you heard anything about Infinity really,
- 59:06you know, and Acura, like we didn't.
- 59:08Acura is not on my radar anymore.
- 59:09But yet I've driven a couple new Acuras and they're fantastic.
- 59:13They're like the Honda of yore, right?
- 59:15Like they still have that inherent goodness.
- 59:16But I, I feel like I guess what I'm getting at this, Lexus is
- 59:19really the only of the three that really is kind of relevant
- 59:23currently, right? So, and it sounds like to me
- 59:26that they would roll the dice with it, you know?
- 59:28Yeah, yeah. I think that's what it felt like
- 59:31reading, you know, what they're hoping for.
- 59:33Like, is this really the way we need to be going?
- 59:37That said, send us some Century Press cars when they're.
- 59:39Around. Well, yeah, V.
- 59:41Twelves I mean, the good news is with Toyota is you know, they're
- 59:45they're the number one, aren't they?
- 59:46They, they're the highest performing automotive company in
- 59:49the world. So they can afford to try some
- 59:52things, take some risks. Yeah.
- 59:55Well, and I wonder how much of that like bringing the century
- 59:59here as a brand, how much of that is because it's been this
- 1:00:04very established luxurious model in Japan as a singular model?
- 1:00:09So maybe this is the way to sort of mitigate like the
- 1:00:12intersection of like it was one brain, you know, one model.
- 1:00:14But we didn't have it here. Yeah.
- 1:00:16So like you said, Ryan, like we don't know.
- 1:00:18The only the only century reference we have is the Buick.
- 1:00:21And they're making them anyway, right?
- 1:00:22Might as well try to sell them other places.
- 1:00:24There's that. Yeah, why not watch out for the
- 1:00:27press, car and the article online?
- 1:00:31Autoblog. Dot com if only they would
- 1:00:35follow me back on Instagram. That's that's what really burns
- 1:00:38me. So you need to fill that in as
- 1:00:41jokes every time, like at the end of your article.
- 1:00:46Just love Note 2 to them. Follow me.
- 1:00:49Absolutely, yeah. And see if they pick up the
- 1:00:51hints. But you've got a few articles
- 1:00:54coming out, haven't you, On Can you talk about them or is it too
- 1:00:59early? So, well, I'll tell you about
- 1:01:00another. I'll tell you about one more.
- 1:01:02So I definitely want to write about our pal Toms GT3 Rs 40,
- 1:01:07but more I guess more forthcoming in the pipeline.
- 1:01:12Actually, we're talking about Jay and Sheffield watches Jay
- 1:01:15Turkbus. So I sat down with him last week
- 1:01:18and a nice discussion about sort of the Genesis, if you will, of,
- 1:01:22of Sheffield and his story. And he sent over some pictures
- 1:01:26today because I need some pictures for the article.
- 1:01:29And so there's some great shots and stuff I really, really want.
- 1:01:31You know, there's this legend of him getting this, you know,
- 1:01:34Sheffield Watch when he was 15 or 12 or whatever it was, right?
- 1:01:37And I was hoping, hoping, hoping that there was a picture of him
- 1:01:40like standing proudly with this. Ironically I do not have a
- 1:01:43Sheffield if you're watching this but.
- 1:01:47Don't look too closely, but anyway, moving.
- 1:01:48On I will tomorrow, you know, so I'm really actually very excited
- 1:01:51about that because he's got a great story and Jay's a great
- 1:01:53guy and you know, you know, Autobots got like 2.3 million
- 1:01:59sets of eyeballs every day or something.
- 1:02:00So there you go. I'm looking forward to sharing
- 1:02:03Jay's story so that that'll be the next one, you know, right
- 1:02:06event. And eventually I'll get this
- 1:02:08Diablo article, I swear. Yes, yeah, third time did.
- 1:02:12Diablo. The Diablo article is just the
- 1:02:14perpetual tease. He's like, by the way, I already
- 1:02:16know I'm never gonna drive it, but I'm just gonna keep teasing.
- 1:02:18Yeah. Next week, read all the other
- 1:02:20ones in between. I gotta get so enough plugs for
- 1:02:22me. How about a plug for Tori, who
- 1:02:24had an article in the Autopian this week?
- 1:02:27That's right, he did. When you talk about that like
- 1:02:29that hit me out of you know, that was on the left field that
- 1:02:31you know, I mean again, make no small plans.
- 1:02:33It was great he he wrote about. Right about the car that he
- 1:02:36built and more. He more so focused on the actual
- 1:02:40VW scene in the 80s in Southern California.
- 1:02:43Yeah, it was great. And yeah, he's written for the
- 1:02:46autopian. Like over the years, he'll write
- 1:02:49about when there's when there's something for him to write
- 1:02:51about. So yeah, it's really fun.
- 1:02:53What a talented bunch. Yeah, but I know these people,
- 1:02:58you know? I know.
- 1:03:01Well, he's because he knows Jason.
- 1:03:03He got to know Jason Torchinski in Pennsylvania because they
- 1:03:06both had Yugos I think there. You.
- 1:03:09Go see now you know. That's the ultimate callback.
- 1:03:13Yeah, we do. Yes.
- 1:03:14Yeah, they said they would come on.
- 1:03:16So it's. Another first rule of Yugo Club
- 1:03:18though you don't talk about Yugos.
- 1:03:23For very different reasons. Though than Fight Club right?
- 1:03:26Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah.
- 1:03:30Yes, you can tell I'm a, you can tell I'm not really a member of
- 1:03:33the Yugo club because I didn't know that.
- 1:03:35There we go. And that's a proud thing.
- 1:03:37You should be. You should be glad about that.
- 1:03:40I nearly bought 1 and I'm lucky I didn't but yeah.
- 1:03:43How long ago was that? When I was, yeah, when I was 17.
- 1:03:48OK, alright, well then you forget.
- 1:03:51Yeah, that was nearly my first car, but I was talked out a bit
- 1:03:54so it had like a body kit on it and wings and it was cheap and
- 1:03:59looked good, but. Just to keep it like, you know,
- 1:04:01stuck to the road at high speeds, right?
- 1:04:04Yeah, active downpours and it looks good and it was a car, but
- 1:04:09I didn't. Amazing.
- 1:04:09It's. Amazing.
- 1:04:11Are we at a show or? That's a show.
- 1:04:13That's a. Show.
- 1:04:14Yeah, Yeah. Can we a lot of ground to that.
- 1:04:17Yeah, next week's guests, this is hot off the press.
- 1:04:22We have Danica Patrick and Jensen Button, so don't forget
- 1:04:25to tune in for that one. Amazing.
- 1:04:27Both of them together. That is going to be a cool car,
- 1:04:31but I guess we've got the phrase that pays.
- 1:04:33And remember, always be driving. Thanks so much for joining us,
- 1:04:37and we'll see you next week. Until next week.
