- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're back for another bite-sized episode. Hey, Lucas, last time we talked about 'apa' – what. That was fun. Lucas: It was. And now we're going to revisit a word we touched on a while ago – 'mana'. It means 'which' or 'where' depending on context. Today we'll focus on 'which'. Luna: Ooh, I remember 'mana' from that episode about choosing at the market. We had 'yang ini' and 'yang itu'. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with a simple one: Mana satu? This means 'Which one?' Luna: Mana satu? Lucas: Perfect. Now, if someone asks you 'Mana satu?', you can answer 'Yang ini.' – this one. Or 'Yang itu.' – that one. Luna: Yang ini. Yang itu. This one, that one. Got it. Lucas: Here's a quick scene. Imagine you're at a fruit stall and the seller asks: 'Mana satu?' You point to a mango and say 'Yang ini.' Luna: Mana satu? Yang ini. That feels good. Lucas: Now let's add a bit more. If you want to say 'I want this one', you say 'Saya mahu yang ini.' Luna: Saya mahu yang ini. 'I want this one.' Lucas: Exactly. And if you're asking 'Which one?' in a different way, you can say 'Yang mana?' – literally 'Which one?' but it's more direct. Luna: Yang mana? So 'mana satu' and 'yang mana' are both okay? Lucas: Yes, they're similar. 'Mana satu?' is like 'Which one?', and 'Yang mana?' is more like 'Which one is it?' Both are useful. Luna: Awesome. Let's practice more. If I want the purple one, I'd say 'Saya mahu yang ungu.' Right? Lucas: Perfect. You already know colors. Nice. Luna: So if the seller says 'Mana satu?' I can just say 'Yang ungu.' or 'Saya mahu yang ungu.' Lucas: Exactly. Now, before we go deeper, I want to mention something real quick. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, a small contribution can keep these episodes free and ad-free. A couple of dollars a month, buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, genuinely makes a difference. No pressure, just if you can. Luna: Yeah, it helps us keep going. And I love that we can share these lessons. Anyway, back to 'mana'. What about asking which one of two? Lucas: Good question. You can say 'Mana satu, ini atau itu?' – which one, this or that? Let's try a scene: You're choosing between two shirts. The seller says 'Mana satu?' You say 'Saya mahu yang ini.' Luna: Mana satu? Saya mahu yang ini. I think I've got it. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: Mana satu? Luna: Mana satu? Lucas: Yang ini. Luna: Yang ini. Lucas: Yang itu. Luna: Yang itu. Lucas: Saya mahu yang ini. Luna: Saya mahu yang ini. Lucas: Yang mana? Luna: Yang mana? Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put it all together in a mini conversation. Imagine you're at a hawker stall. The seller asks: 'Mana satu?' You answer: 'Yang ini.' Then you add: 'Saya mahu yang ini.' Luna: Mana satu? Yang ini. Saya mahu yang ini. That sounds natural. Lucas: And if you're unsure, you can ask back: 'Yang mana?' Luna: So if I don't understand, I just say 'Yang mana?' Lucas: Yes, it's a great way to ask for clarification. Let's do one more scene. You're at a pet shop choosing a puppy. The seller says 'Mana satu?' You say 'Saya mahu yang kecil.' – I want the small one. Luna: Saya mahu yang kecil. Cute. I want the small one. Lucas: Right. And if you want the big one, 'Saya mahu yang besar.' Luna: Saya mahu yang besar. I want the big one. Lucas: Great. See how 'yang' works with adjectives? 'Yang kecil' – the small one, 'yang besar' – the big one. Luna: So 'yang' is like 'the one'. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's review all five phrases one more time. Mana satu? Luna: Mana satu? Lucas: Yang ini. Luna: Yang ini. Lucas: Yang itu. Luna: Yang itu. Lucas: Saya mahu yang ini. Luna: Saya mahu yang ini. Lucas: Yang mana? Luna: Yang mana? Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. Practice these phrases before we meet again. Practice with a friend, or even just out loud. Luna: I'll try to use them next time I'm at the market. Thanks for the lesson, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. This has been Learn Malay with Fexingo. See you next time.
