- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing the months from last time. Januar, Februar, März... I've got them down. Lucas: Perfect. And today I thought we'd do something fun — birthday vocabulary. Just in time for my niece's birthday next week. Luna: Oh, I love that! Birthdays are the best. So what's the first phrase? Lucas: The classic: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! That's 'Happy birthday' in German. Let me say it slowly: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. Luna: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. That's a mouthful. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. Lucas: You got it. And a slightly shorter version is Herzlichen Glückwunsch. It means 'Congratulations' or 'Best wishes'. Luna: Herzlichen Glückwunsch. Herzlichen Glückwunsch. That one feels a bit easier. Lucas: Yeah, you can use it for birthdays, anniversaries, promotions. Very versatile. So if you go to a birthday party, you can say Alles Gute zum Geburtstag or Herzlichen Glückwunsch. Luna: Got it. So what if I want to give a gift? Like, 'I give you a book'? Lucas: Exactly. That would be Ich schenke dir ein Buch. 'I give you a book' — schenken means 'to give as a gift'. Let's break it: Ich schenke dir ein Buch. Luna: Ich schenke dir ein Buch. Ich schenke dir ein Buch. So dir is 'to you'. Lucas: Exactly. And the thing you give goes at the end. So you could say Ich schenke dir eine Blume, for a flower, or Ich schenke dir einen Kuchen, for a cake. Luna: Oh, cake! Kuchen. But what about the birthday cake itself? Is that different? Lucas: Great question. The birthday cake is die Geburtstagstorte. Torte is a layered cake or a fancy cake. So die Geburtstagstorte. Luna: Die Geburtstagstorte. That's a long word. Geburtstagstorte. But it makes sense: Geburtstag plus Torte. Lucas: Exactly. And if you're at a party, someone might ask you Wie alt bist du? — 'How old are you?' Luna: Wie alt bist du? Wie alt bist du? So if I'm 25, I say Ich bin fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt. Lucas: Perfect. Or just Ich bin fünfundzwanzig. But the full version is fine. Luna: Okay, let me try all of them. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Ich schenke dir ein Buch. Die Geburtstagstorte. Wie alt bist du? Lucas: Wow, you nailed all of them. That's impressive. Luna: Thanks! It helps when you repeat them a bunch. So, quick thought — if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with German, and today's episode was useful, you can support us by buying us a coffee. I'll pretend to be at a birthday party. Lucas: Sure. You walk in, see the birthday person, and say... Luna: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Ich schenke dir eine Blume. Lucas: That's lovely. And the person might say Danke schön! Then you ask: Wie alt bist du? Luna: Oh, right. But maybe don't ask a stranger that. Only friends. Lucas: Good point. In Germany, it's fine with friends. Then they'd say Ich bin dreißig or whatever. Luna: And then you have a piece of die Geburtstagstorte. Lucas: Exactly. So today we covered: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Ich schenke dir..., die Geburtstagstorte, and Wie alt bist du? Luna: That's a solid set. I feel ready for a German birthday party now. Lucas: Great. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn German with Fexingo. Luna: Tschüss!
